After Two Days

11 Tammuz, 5764
June 30, 2004

Hosea 6:2 "After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight."

2 Peter 3:8 "But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day."

While putting together a file on Nissan, 5764 I came across the following that I thought should probably have a file of its own. It has to do with the culmination of two days (2,000 years) since the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. The projected date is July 17, 2004:

ASTRONOMERS 'PINPOINT TIME AND DATE OF CRUCIFIXION AND RESURRECTION'
Ananova
May 8, 2003

Two Romanian astronomers say their research shows Christ died at 3pm on a Friday, and rose again at 4am on a Sunday.

Liviu Mircea and Tiberiu Oproiu claim to have pinpointed the exact time and date of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection.

The pair, from the Astronomic Observatory Institute in Cluj, Romania, say Jesus died at 3pm on Friday, April 3, 33 AD, and rose again at 4am on Sunday, April 5.

They used a computer programme to check biblical references against historical astronomical data.

They said the New Testament stated that Jesus died the day after the first night with a full moon, after the vernal equinox.

Using data gathered on the stars between 26 and 35 AD they established that in those nine years, the first full moon after the vernal equinox was registered twice -- on Friday, April 7, 30 AD, and on Friday, April 3, 33 AD.

They were convinced the date of the crucifixion was 33 AD, and not 30 AD, because records showed a solar eclipse, as depicted in the Bible at the time of Jesus' crucifixion, occurred in Jerusalem that year.

(In October 1582 Pope Gregory chopped off 10 days of the calendar; October 4th was followed by October 15th. This was done to keep pace with the seasons.)

  • April 3, 33 AD Date of Crucifixion
  • 2,000 years x 360 days (biblical year) = 720,000 days
  • April 3, 33 AD + 720,000 days = July 17, 2004
    [July 17, 2004 plus 10 day calendar reform = July 28, 2004 (day after Tisha B'Av)]
  • Possible start of Day of the Lord?
  • Heavens rent, earthquake?
    Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

  • April 5, 33 AD + 720,000 days = July 19, 2004 (around this date)
  • Resurrection Day?
  • New bodies for the church?
  • Dead in Christ raised?
Matthew 27:50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

John 20:1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre...11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping...14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. 16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master 17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her. 19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. 21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you. 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: 23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

Calculate dates for yourself.

I don't know if the above calculator takes into account the 10 days Pope Gregory chopped off in October 1582 (October 4th was followed by October 15th) to get the calendar back in line with equinoxes? Anyway, around the date of July 17, 2004 is the Fast of 17th of Tammuz (July 6, 2004) and Tisha B'Av (July 27, 2004 [July 17, 2004 plus those missing 10 days?]) on the Jewish calendar. (philologos.org file Fast of Tammuz 17/Tisha B'Av)

Fast of 17th Tammuz commemorates: (The following is from http://www.ou.org/)

  • Going all the way back to Biblical times, Moses descended Mount Sinai on this day and, upon seeing the Golden Calf broke the first set of Tablets carrying the Ten Commandments (Shemot 32:19, Mishna Taanit 28b).
  • In the First Temple Era: The priests in the First Temple stopped offering the daily sacrifice on this day (Taanit 28b) due to the shortage of sheep during the siege and the next year 3184 (586 BCE), the walls of Jerusalem were breached after many months of siege by Nebuchadnezzar and his Babylonian forces.
  • In Melachim II 21:7 we find that King Menashe, one of the worst of the Jewish kings, had an idol placed in the Holy Sanctuary of the Temple, according to tradition on this date. The Talmud, in Masechet Taanit 28b, says that in the time of the Roman persecution, Apostomos, captain of the occupation forces, did the same, and publicly burned the Torah - both acts considered open blasphemy and desecration. These were followed by Titus and Rome breaching the walls of Jerusalem in 3760 (70 CE) and Pope Gregory IX ordering the confiscation of all manuscripts of the Talmud in 4999 (1239).
  • In later years this day continued to be a dark one for Jews. In 1391, more than 4,000 Jews were killed in Toledo and Jaen, Spain and in 4319 (1559) the Jewish Quarter of Prague was burned and looted.
  • The Kovno ghetto was liquidated on this day in 5704 (1944) and in 5730 (1970) Libya ordered the confiscation of Jewish property.
  • Other interesting occurrences on this day include Noach sending out the first dove to see if the Flood waters had receded, (Bereishit 8:8) in 1650 (2100 BCE); Moshe Rabbeinu destroying the golden calf, (Shemot 32:20, Seder Olam 6, Taanit 30b - Rashi) and then ascending back up Har Sinai for the second time where he spent the next forty days pleading for forgiveness for the sin of the golden calf, (Shemot 33:11, Rashi).

  • The Mishna in Ta'anit 4:8 associates the 17th of Tammuz as the "Fast of the Fourth Month" mentioned by the prophet Zechariah. According to this Mishna, the 17th of Tammuz will be transformed in the messianic era in a day that "shall be joy to the House of Judah" full of "gladness and cheerful feasts".

  • This day is the beginning of the Three Weeks, an annual period of mourning over the destruction of the first and second Temples in Jerusalem. [Followed by 7 weeks of consolation.]
(Following info on Tisha B'Av from http://www.ou.org)

"Tisha B'Av is the saddest day on the Jewish calendar because of the incredible series of tragedies which occurred on that date throughout Jewish History."

  • The sin of the spies caused Hashem to decree that the Children of Israel who left Egypt would not be permitted to enter the land of Israel;
  • The first Temple was destroyed;
  • The second Temple was destroyed;
  • Betar, the last fortress to hold out against the Romans during the Bar Kochba revolt in the year 135, fell, sealing the fate of the Jewish people.
  • One year after the fall of Betar, the Temple area was plowed.
  • In 1492, King Ferdinand of Spain issued the expulsion decree, setting Tisha B'Av as the final date by which not a single Jew would be allowed to walk on Spanish soil.
  • World War I – which began the downward slide to the Holocaust – began on Tisha B'av.

Shavuot/Pentecost:
  • Shavuot is compared to a wedding, for it was on Shavout that the covenant between God and the Jewish people was sealed at Mount Sinai.
  • Tradition states Enoch was raptured on this date.
  • Traditions states King David was born and died on this date.
  • As the day when the Jewish people embraced the Torah, Shavuot customs include reading the Ten Commandments and the Book of Ruth in the Synagogue, studying Torah throughout the night, and learning as much Torah as possible.
  • Countdown to Shavuot
by Yerachmiel Tilles of Ascent Seminars

THE FIRST SHAVUOT took place on Shabbat, fifty days after the Exodus from Egypt, on the sixth day of the month of Sivan, 2448 years after the creation of the world (May 9, 1313 BCE), 3308 years ago.

That day, at the break of dawn, G-d spoke the Ten Declarations. 1. Although the entire fifty-day period was a time of purification, 2. the most intensive preparations were started on the first day of Sivan, when the entire Jewish nation arrived at Mt Sinai.

    [Sivan 1-5 Events omitted]

    SIVAN 6 EVENTS

1.Evening: We all go to sleep, mistakenly assuming that the best preparation is to be fresh for the big event, instead of staying up late and readying ourselves.

2.Dawn: Thunder, lightning, thick clouds, rain, and unceasing shofar blasts increasing in volume.

We tremble, the mountain smokes, G-d bends the heavens down to the mountain top; His presence accompanied by 22,000 angels descends on fire. Birds stop flying and chirping, all animals are silent, the seas are still. The world holds its breath.

Moshe ascends and descends at G-d's word. G-d begins the Ten Declarations, first saying all of them simultaneously, then repeating them one at a time. Our souls depart from bodies as we hear the first two; G-d revives us but we retreat in fear, requesting Moshe to listen for us. G-d calls Moshe back to the top of the mountain and tells him the last eight, and Moshe repeats them to us.

    The holiday begins.
    Effects accumulate.
    The shofar is blowing!
    The mountain is smoking!
    Revelation is imminent!
    BE READY!

Shabbat Shuvah (Sabbath of Return): [whose return?]

  • The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah, Shabbat of Return because its special haftarah reading begins with the words Shuvah Yisrael "Return O Israel", from the prophecy of Hoshea. It is also referred to as Shabbat Shuvah because it falls during the Ten Days of Repentance. (www.chabad.org)
  • Hosea 14:2-10 (KJV 14:1-9); Joel 2:11-27 (some sources say 2:15-27) and Micah 7:18-20 are read on this day:
Hosea 14:1,2,7: O Israel, return unto the LORD thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity. 2 Take with you words, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips...7 They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.

Joel 2:11,13,15,16,26,27: And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?..13...turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil...15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: 16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. 26 And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. 27 And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.

Micah 7:18-20: 18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. 19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. 20 Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old.

  • Hosea begins: "Shuvah Yisrael ad Adonai Elohecha" (Return, O Israel, unto Adonai your God). Although Hosea was speaking to the geopolitical and historical realities of his time (e.g., the fall of the northern kingdom), his existential message of hope for both return and reconciliation transcends history. Surely, that's the reason it is assigned to this Shabbat during the 10 Days of Repentance.

In a play on the Hebrew of this first verse, we can read not, "Shuvah Yisrael AD Adonai Elohecha" but rather "Shuvah Yisrael, EID Adonai Elohecha." Because Biblical Hebrew is written without vowels, we can reinterpret the text by reassigning the vowels. Thus reinterpreted, Hosea's message is either: "Return, O Israel, for Adonai Your God is Witness (to all you do)" or "Return, O Israel, as a witness for Adonai your God."

In the first case, Hosea reminds us to repent in the spirit of "Know before Whom you stand"--that is, the One who sees all our deeds and knows all our thoughts. Some will read this in the ominous, "Big Brother is watching" sense of God as witness. However, the Chasidic teacher, Sefat Emet, following Midrash Pesikta, finds comfort in this idea. A modern commentary on Sefat Emet puts it this way: "Even if your intentions are thwarted and your thoughts of remorse are not translated into action, God will still testify (witness) to the internal teshuvah that takes place." In other words, return, for even if you are not successful, God will still be witness to the genuine effort you make.

In the second case, we understand the goal of teshuvah as becoming God's witnesses in the world--witnesses who testify through our actions. In doing teshuvah, we testify to the possibility of repentance, the necessity of goodness, our responsibility to continue hoping. Return, O Israel, and by virtue of your efforts at self-reflection and spiritual renewal, become a witness whose actions testifies to the reality of God in the universe. (www.uahc.org)

    Rosh HaShanah:

The following are all the different names used to describe Rosh HaShanah:
    1. Rosh HaShanah (New Year)
    2. Yom Teruah (The Day of the Awakening Blast or The Day of the Awakening Shout)
[For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words. (1 Thes 4:15-18)]
    3. Feast of Trumpets Yom HaDin (Day of Judgment)
    4. Yom HaZikkaron (Day of Remembrance)
    5. Yom HaKeseh (Day of the Hiding or Hidden Day)

    • The gates of heaven are supposedly opened on this day.
    • One of the symbolic references to this day corresponds with the fact that when a King begins to reign he is heralded with trumpets. On this day, trumpets are blown all day long (some commentators say 100 times).
    • The resurrection of the dead will take place on Rosh HaShanah according to the Talmud, (Rosh HaShanah 166).
    • There are three trumpets that have a name: the first trump, the last trump and the great trump. Each has a specific day in the year: first trump is associated with Pentecost, last trump is associated with Rosh HaShanah and the great trump is associated with Yom Kippur.
[In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. (1 Cor 15:52)]
    • The trumpet is blown throughout Elul (the month before Rosh HaShanah) except for the last day. The trumpet is silent because much about Rosh HaShanah is concealed and shrouded in mystery and Satan is not to be given notice about the arrival of Rosh HaShanah.
    • "Three books opened - that of life, for those whose works had been good; another of death, for those who had been thoroughly evil; and a third, intermediate, for those whose case was to be decided on the Day of Atonement (ten days after Rosh HaShanah on Yom Kippur), the delay being granted for repentance, or otherwise, after which their names would be finally entered, either in the book of life, or in that of death."
[He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. (Rev 3:5)]
    • The customary greeting for Rosh HaShanah is--"Shanah tovah tikatevu" ("May you be inscribed [in the book of life] for a good year") and on Yom Kippur--"Chatimah tovah" ("[May you have] a good sealing [of your destiny in the book of life]"). Tradition states that on Rosh HaShanah "God opens the heavenly books and judges the people according to their works, writing in them who will die and what kind of life the living will enjoy during the coming year. The Ten Days of Penitence (Rosh HaShanah through Yom Kippur) are thought of as offering an opportunity for repentance that will influence God to change these fates for the better. But on Yom Kippur these fates are fixed or 'sealed.'"
[And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. (Rev 20:12)]
  • We will have to wait to see exactly how these calculations are interpreted after the dates have passed.

Other links of interest regarding the date for the crucifixion:

Listen to these two intriguing mp3s on "The Solomon Concept" by Charles Capps that explain how the history of the Bible repeats itself. If the date of July 17, 2004 finishes up 2,000 years since the Lord Jesus Christ's crucifixion, then there are going to be some very interesting things set in motion. Listen to this sermon and rejoice!

(I have never heard of nor listened/read anything else re: Charles Capps. I'm just giving a gentle reminder that adding the link to his sermon here does not necessarily endorse everything his ministry teaches.)

July 17, 2004 projected end of 2,000 years.
    July 17, 2004 plus 10 days for calendar reform = July 28, 2004.

Lambert Dolphin in his Ezekiel series states that Ezekiel 1:1 occurred on July 27, 593.

Eze 1:1 Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives by the river of Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God.
    Please read through chapters 1-3.

Modern Jewish observance of Shavuot/Pentecost includes the reading of Ezekiel 1 (does this have a special meaning to the church?).

Ezekiel 3:14,15 has some Revelation type language in it. It speaks of Ezekiel being raptured and a period of 7 days (not to mention earlier chapters that talk of the same four beasts as in Revelation and the parallel of the man eating a scroll):

3:14 So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me. 15 Then I came to them of the captivity at Telabib, that dwelt by the river of Chebar, and I sat where they sat, and remained there astonished among them seven days.

Is it time for the Men in Black to make their appearance? the 144,000 Jewish men to be sealed and sent on the last great push to get the Gospel preached to the ends of the earth? Will they be walking through hell on earth to complete their ministry? Sounds like Jesus.

    But we preach Christ crucified,
    unto the Jews a stumblingblock,
    and unto the Greeks foolishness.

    (1 Cor 1:23)
