Venus Resurrects This Easter Sunday by John P. Pratt

It is a rare event that won't happen for another 1500 years and you won't
read about it in the newspaper for it takes the careful studies of John
Pratt, Meridian's Science and Religion Editor and a Ph.D in astronomy and
expert in ancient calendars, to have discovered this. He says "have you
noticed Venus, the Evening Star, currently blazing in the west after
sunset?

From Native American traditions we learn that in this phase it represents
the Savior when he was at the heights of his ministry. In March it will
plunge into the darkness below the horizon even as the Savior conquered
the forces of death in the underworld. Then in an extremely rare event,
Venus will resurrect precisely on Easter (April 15, 2001) as the Bright
Morning Star.

That rare coincidence, which won't happen again for fifteen hundred years,
can be witnessed around the world just before dawn on Easter Sunday
wherever the eastern horizon is low and clear. This extraordinary sight
was also witnessed on that Easter Sunday morning long ago when death was
conquered by the Savior of all mankind.

Excerpt: "Just how rare is this alignment? Only one day of every 584 days
is the day on which Venus resurrects, which can occur on any day of our
year. Thus, we would expect about one Easter Sunday every 584 years to
have this alignment. I checked to see when it will happen again, and it
turns out that the next 1,500 years are not average, because it will not
occur for more than another 1,500 years. So this is an event of a
millennium to witness."

Deaths Up, But No More Earthquakes Than Usual: USGS

With more than 35,000 estimated deaths from earthquakes in the first two
months of 2001, it may seem that the earth is more restless than usual. Not
so, according to scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey's National
Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) in Golden, Colo.

"While it's true that more people have died from earthquakes during the first
two months of this year than in the last two years put together, the average
number of earthquakes per month has stayed about the same," said USGS
scientist Waverly Person.

"Overall, earthquake activity isn't on the rise," said Person. "We're simply
able to locate more lower magnitude earthquakes due to advances in the
technology, and when a deadly quake occurs, those images of death and
destruction come right into our living rooms on the evening news."

In January 2000, there were six "significant" earthquakes that were
responsible for seven deaths. Significant earthquakes are defined by NEIC as
"earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.5 or larger, or ones that caused
fatalities, injuries or substantial damage."

In January 2001 there were also six significant earthquakes, but the
combined
death toll from both the January 13 and February 13 earthquakes in El
Salvador, and the January 26 quake in southern India is estimated at 30,000
to 40,000.

In February 2000 there were five significant earthquakes, with one death,
whereas in February 2001 there were three significant quakes, with 325
deaths.

"Dense urban populations coupled with weak building structures near the
epicenters are responsible for most of the fatalities, in any year," Person
said. "The annual long-term average is 10,000 deaths worldwide, but that
figure varies greatly from year to year.

"In 2000, for example, there were only about 225 people killed in
earthquakes, whereas fatalities totaled 8,928 in 1998, and 2,907 in 1997.
The deadliest year of the 20th century was 1976, when at least 255,000
people, and perhaps more than 600,000, were killed after one quake rocked
Tianjin (formerly Tangshan), China."

Person said a typical year for earthquakes consists of 18 major temblors
(magnitude 7.0 to 7.9) and one great quake (8.0 or higher). During the first
two months of 2001, there were seven earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.0 or
higher, and two others with magnitudes of 6.8.

The highest magnitude of any quake in February 2001 was the magnitude
7.3 in
Southern Sumatra. Seattle suffered a magnitude 6.8 temblor on February 28,
but no deaths were directly attributed to the earthquake, and damage,
though
extensive, was far less than it would have been in many cities of the world.

The greatest number of earthquake-related deaths this year has been in
India,
where as many as 30,000 people may have been killed due to the 7.7,
January
26, earthquake. That number is estimated to go as high as 50,000.

The death toll from the January 13, 7.7 quake in El Salvador and the
February
13 magnitude 6.6 is estimated at around 1,169. Many of the El Salvadorans
were killed when earthquake-triggered landslides crushed their homes.

The USGS estimates that several million earthquakes occur in the world
each
year. Many go undetected because they hit remote areas or have very small
magnitudes. The USGS now locates about 50 earthquakes each day, or
about
20,000 a year, with an average of 20 earthquakes per day in California.

Since 1973, the USGS has provided up-to-date earthquake information to
emergency response and mitigation teams, government agencies,
universities,
private companies, scientists and the general public.

This information includes determinations of the locations and severity of
seismic events in the United States and throughout the world, including the
rapid analysis of significant earthquakes on a 24-hour basis. Seismologists
around the world use this information to increase their understanding of

Compound may hold superconductor key

A commonly available metallic compound has "exciting and real" potential to
become a commercially available superconductor, researchers report today.

"Superconductors are things that get people very excited in science," says
materials scientist Robert Cava of Princeton University. His team's findings
are published in today's edition of the journal Science. "If you can find 'The
One' with the right combinations of properties, you could change technology
in a very profound way," Cava says.

Superconductors could transform society into the future that baby boomers
envisioned as kids, with flying cars, automated homes and instant
communications that cost pennies to operate. They conduct electricity
without energy losses caused by friction as currents pass over conventional
wires.

The challenge is to overcome temperature constraints, Cava says. The
transition to superconductivity cannot be achieved at temperatures much
higher than absolute zero, -459.67 degrees Farenheit.

Last month, scientists in Japan announced that commonly available
magnesium diboride performed as a superconductor at the highest
temperatures measured for a metallic compound, 75 degrees F above
absolute zero, Cava says.

His research, conducted with physicists at the CNRS at Grenoble, France,
confirms the superconductivity of the magnesium diboride and establishes a
starting point for research by other physicists.

Two of the first hurdles to cross on the road to superconducting nirvana are
investigating the effects of "applied pressure" and determining whether the
conducting medium can be made into an electrical wire. Applied pressure
means compressing the superconducting medium to learn whether it can
raise the transition temperature higher to make commercial application more
likely.

The Princeton/CNRS collaboration studied applied pressure and found that
the transition temperature was lowered instead of raised, "which is a bit of
bad news," Cava says. But scientists may discover other tricks to raise the
transition temperature by stretching the material or by making other
alterations in its composition. The good news is that a team at Iowa State
University and another at the University of Wisconsin discovered only two
weeks ago that magnesium diboride passes the hurdle for being made into a
wire.

On Monday, physicists will hold a special all-night session at the American
Institute of Physics meeting to compare notes and ideas on magnesium
diboride's possible future.

1. General

The Government will strive to achieve the following national goals:

To ensure national and personal security for every citizen of the State.

To ensure the status of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

democratic, Zionist state that encourages aliyah and whose citizens enjoy

Government views the reduction of gaps and application of principles of
social justice as essential elements of its economic policy.

1.4 The Government will act to promote stable growth through integration in
the world economy, improve the standard of living, and advance science,

1.5 The Government will act to advance broad sectors of the people, to
narrow gaps, and to raise the standard of living of weaker sectors through
the advancement of development towns and the development and rehabilitation
of distressed neighborhoods.

1.6 The Government will act to effect a real improvement in the fields of

1.11 The Government will strengthen the ties between Israel and Diaspora

Zionist identity and help in the struggle against assimilation. The
Government, together with world Jewry, will combat anti-Semitism and racism.

1.12 The Government will work towards strategic planning, so that Israel may
become an advanced, modern state run efficiently and with justice, striding
confidently and peacefully towards a better future in the 21st century.

2. Security, Peace and Settlement

The factions which are partners in this coalition have decided to serve
together in one Government, in light of the grave security and political
challenges facing Israel, although each continues to adhere to its
ideological positions on the political issues and on the subject of
settlement, especially regarding the nature of permanent agreements and the
conditions thereof. Accordingly, despite differences of opinion existing
between them, they have decided to participate in a joint Government based
on a broad national consensus, according to these principles:

2.1 The supreme goal of the new Government is to consolidate Israel's
security and promote regional stability. The Government will act to
strengthen national security and provide personal security to its citizens
through a determined fight against violence and terrorism. The Government of
Israel will demand that the Palestinians abandon the path of violence and
terrorism and that the Palestinian Authority fulfill its commitments as per
the agreements it has signed and forcefully combat violence and terrorism
directed at Israel, its citizens, residents and soldiers.

2.2 The Government of Israel will act to promote peace with all the states
and peoples in the region, while maintaining Israel's historical, national
and security interests. The achievement of peace requires painful
compromises by all the parties involved. The Government will strive to
achieve stability and prosperity for all the peoples of the region. The
Government believes that direct negotiations is the correct way to establish
relations of trust between the sides and to promote peace.

2.3 The Government of Israel will honor previous political agreements
ratified by the Knesset, conditional on their being upheld by the other
side.

2.4 The Government will strive to achieve permanent peace agreements with
Syria and the Palestinians, based on UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and
338.

2.5 The Government of Israel demands that the Government of Lebanon uphold
its part in the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 425 and
calls upon Lebanon to enter into a peace agreement with Israel. Israel holds
Lebanon and Syria resonsible for preventing terrorist activities that
threaten the peace and security of residents of northern Israel and IDF
soldiers.

2.6 The Government will act to promote peace with the Palestinians also
through interim agreements that will include compromises. In the framework
of interim agreements, the possibility of Israeli redeployment in Judea,
Samaria and Gaza will be considered, as long as this does not harm Israel's
interests.

2.7 The Government will do everything in its power to secure the release of
POW's and MIA's and anyone who acted on behalf of state security, and to
bring them home.

2.8 The Government views settlement, in all its manifestations, as having
great social and national value, and will act to improve the ability to deal
with the difficulties and challenges facing the settlement effort.

2.9 During its term of office, the Government will not establish new
settlements. The Government will provide the ongoing necessities for the
development of the settlements.

2.10 The Government will act with firm resolve to ensure the security of the
Jewish residents of Judea, Samaria and Gaza.

2.11 The Government will reinforce the IDF and the other branches of
Israel's security forces and strengthen Israel's power of deterrence, with
the aim of preventing war and protecting the state, its citizens and
residents. The Government will reserve the right to call out the IDF and the
security forces where and when needed, to ensure the safety of Israelis
citizens and residents, and of the Jewish people in the Diaspora.

2.12 The Government of Israel will demand a cessation of incitement and
hostility towards Israel in the Palestinian Authority and the Arab
countries.

2.13 The Government will work towards establishing peaceful, friendly,
normal relations with Egypt and Jordan.

2.14 The Government will strive to deepen the special relationship of
friendship and closeness that exists between Israel and the United States,
and to continue and even enhance the strategic cooperation between them.

2.15 The Government will work to consolidate and deepen Israel's foreign
relations with the European Union and the European states.

2.16 The Government will strive to strengthen Israel's foreign relations
with Russia and the CIS.

2.17 The Government will deepen and consolidate relations with China, India,
Japan and East Asian countries, as well as with the international community
in general.

2.18 The Government, as part of its policy to promote peace in the Middle
East, will work towards developing frameworks for cooperation among the
peoples of the region in the political, economical, scientific and cultural
spheres.

2.19 The Government of Israel will combat, constantly and resolutely,
manifestations of anti-Semitism throughout the world, and cultivate the
mutual ties and responsibility between the Israel and Jewish communities in
the Diaspora.

2.20 The Government will work to relieve the distressed situation of the SLA
refugees.

10. Religion and State

10.5 The Government will safeguard the holy places of all religions.
Furthermore, the Government will take measures to enable Jews to pray at
their holy places and others to pray at their holy places, with
consideration for the requirements of public security and order.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon left the door open for resumed negotiations with
the Palestinians as he outlined his government's policies toward them at
yesterday's cabinet meeting.

As delineated yesterday, Sharon's Palestinian policy comprises five
principles:

- Conferral of a sense of security to Israeli citizens,

- Curtailment of Palestinian violence and not allowing the Palestinian
Authority (PA) to notch diplomatic gains via the use of violence,

- Reducing the danger of internationalizing the dispute (such as putting
Jerusalem's holy places under international supervision),

- Limiting the risk of a regional slide toward wider violence and war, and

- Keeping open the possibility of a return to peace negotiations once the
Palestinians refrain from violence.

In elaborating on his policy objectives regarding the Palestinians, Sharon
declared: "Our intention is to refrain from the use of collective punishment
measures, which encumber civilians who are not involved in terror." He noted
he has instructed Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer to ease closures and
other restrictions in areas in the territories that have not been hotbeds of
terrorist activity.

In his statements at the government meeting, Ben-Eliezer explicitly
distanced himself from collective punishment policies. "We have no interest
in hurting the [Palestinian] civil population," he said. He reiterated this
yesterday in a meeting with settler heads.

In his briefing to the cabinet, IDF Military Intelligence chief Major
General Amos Malka suggested the government's policy intentions toward the
Palestinians could be tested soon by renewed or escalated violent
confrontation.

Malka eschewed optimism based on the recent lull in violence, claiming the
Palestinians are likely to escalate attacks in the days and weeks ahead in
attempt to de-legitimize Israel in the court of international opinion.

The IDF's Military Intelligence chief said the Palestinians are skeptical
that the sort of interim agreements proposed by Sharon will serve their
interests.

PA Chairman Yasser Arafat is not taking steps to prevent terror attacks, and
PA police officers are taking part in such terror strikes against Israeli
targets, Malka claimed.

Surveying socio-economic conditions in the PA, Malka painted a grim picture.
Some government ministers interpreted his message as warning that the PA is
on the brink of collapse. Malka subsequently denied any such prophecy was
the gist of his report.

Looking to the Arab summit scheduled for the end of this month, Malka said
U.S. President Bush has called Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Jordan's
King Abdullah to Washington to ensure that the summit does not pass radical,
extremist resolutions

Following are some thoughts to help put the current Middle East
situation in perspective. These points will give you a better
understanding about why a peace deal is very unlikely and that war
could very likely be next.

* The new Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, said that none of
the Golan Heights region would be turned over to the Syrians.
Israel previously had proposed a treaty to Syria to give all of the
Golan but a few meters of land along the eastern shore of the Sea
of Galilee. However, the late President Haffez Assad turned down
this offer just before his death, and now the Syrians have nothing
to show for their efforts.

* Sharon said Jerusalem would not be split. In reply, Palestinian
leader Yasser Arafat states that the splitting of Jerusalem is a
key to lasting peace.

* Sharon said that Israel would retain full sovereignty over the
Temple Mount. By contrast, Arafat says the Arabs want sovereignty,
and he said (by mistake), in an interview late last year with CNN's
Christiane Amanpour, that peace will come down to what happens with
the holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem, where the Temple Mount
is located.

* In a speech to the Palestinian Legislative Council in the Gaza
Strip on Saturday, Arafat called upon Israel to resume negotiations
where they left off with former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, saying,
"Our hearts are open and our hands are stretched out for the peace
of the brave." (Jerusalem Post)

* Sharon, in response, said that the deal cut by the Barak
government is no longer on the table and that he is not obligated
to start there. (Even Barak and former U.S. President Bill Clinton
are in agreement on that.)

* Sharon stated that he is ready for talks when the terror stops,
while Arafat says the terror will stop once the parties are back to
the peace talks.

* The Desert Storm Arab allies have told U.S. Secretary of State
Colin Powell that they are more concerned about Israel than Iraq.

* Secretary Powell's main focus in the Middle East is squelching
Iran and Iraq's military buildup and stopping their plans to come
against Israel.

* Iran continues to arm the terror group Hizbullah on the Southern
border of Lebanon.

* The presidents of Russia and Iran promised today to increase
trade in weapons and cooperation in nuclear energy in defiance of
U.S. efforts to discourage their nations' blossoming ties.

* The Arab terror groups Hamas and the Islamic Jihad have promised
to intensify their attacks against Israel after Sharon was sworn
in.

* A second group of Iraqis vowing to "liberate all of Palestine"
bid their families emotional farewells as they left for military
training on Sunday, allowing President Saddam Hussein to cast
himself as the defender of Jerusalem. Hussein is calling for a
force of seven million Iraqis and naming it the "Jerusalem Army."
(Jerusalem Post)

* All of this comes just as Arab leaders are preparing to meet at a
summit, with the prime agenda being the consideration of their
stance on both Israel and Iraq.

* China is known to be helping Iraq with their high-tech equipment
and the laying of fiber optic lines that is to be used with Iraq's
military equipment.

* North Korea is known to be supplying Iraq with missile
technology.

* U.S. President Bush says he intends to move the U.S. Embassy from
Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This threat has infuriated the Arabs.

During the Israeli-Palestinian talks in late 2000, Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Barak made enormous concessions, and yet any
agreement and resolution still came down to sovereignty over the
Temple Mount and the status of Jerusalem. Those key differences,
along with Ariel Sharon's now-famous visit to the Temple Mount on
the Feast of Trumpets, caused the talks to break off.

Now that Sharon has taken office, all that was on the "peace" table
is off, and the new Prime Minister has taken strong stances against
the concessions that the Palestinians and the Syrians want the
most.

Avi Lipkin, a former Israel Defense Force (IDF) spokesperson, said
during a Texas speech last November, "The Arabs have a history of
selecting the wrong time to go to war."

But in order to go to war, the Arabs most likely need Egypt. Last
week, the Egyptians called up their reserves, which -- as an Israeli
general observed -- is a sign that they could be preparing for war. In
addition, Iraq's role will determine the timing of an Arab war
against Israel.

If there is a war, it could very well be the War of Gog and Magog
(as prophesied in the Old Testament Book of the Prophet Ezekiel,
chapters 38 and 39). Therefore, it would be another war that the
Arabs will lose.

For now, the "bottom line" is that there is no workable solution
leading to peace. As in the past it all comes down to the status of
Jerusalem and the sovereignty over the Temple Mount, on which
neither side has agreed or is likely to agree. Any "peace" talks
these days amount to nothing more than an exercise in futility.

Only the Lord knows what is ahead and how it will unfold. The
possibility of war seems to be an accepted premise by all parties.
The imminent probability of war seems to grow with each passing
day.

VATICAN ON TRIAL OVER "DANGER" RADIO SITE

Three Vatican Radio chiefs are to go on trial in Rome today in a case that

has sparked a bitter diplomatic row. The 3, including Cardinal Roberto
Tucci, the Radio's president, are charged with polluting Italy's air, with

harmful electromagnetic radiation emitted by its forest of antennae in
northern Rome. The antennae, some of which have a 600,000-watt
capacity and can transmit worldwide, are situated on a vast, Vatican-owned

site at Santa Maria di Galeria.

The trial has developed out of a magistrate's inquiry, which was opened into
reports showing a higher than average incidence of tumours and leukaemia
cases in the area. A new health report published last week has meanwhile
found that the leukaemia rate among children under 14 who lived locally
was 6 times higher than for Rome in general. In Cesano, the nearest town,
it was reported that 9 people in one block of flats alone had suffered from

tumours.

But the Vatican has infuriated the government by refusing last week to
accept a court order to attend on the grounds that it did not recognise Italian
jurisdiction. The Vatican has insisted that the site enjoyed extra-territorial
status under a 1951 treaty. It said that Italy had no right to interfere in
what
went on inside, and has also claimed there was no proof that such radiation

caused harm. Willer Bordon, Italy's Environment Minister, reacted to the
Vatican's stand by calling it "incredible, serious and absurd". He said that he
had expected "greater sensitivity" from the Vatican. "The fact that it is
foreign territory doesn't change a thing, since it is Italian citizens who are
being harmed." (The London Telegraph)

ILIESCU INVITES EX-KING BACK IN GESTURE OF
RECONCILIATION

Romanian President Ion Iliescu has invited ex-king Michael to visit
Bucharest in a move aimed at ending their strained relations, a presidential
spokesman said. The former monarch, who lives in exile in Switzerland, has
been invited to attend an art exhibition being staged in the former royal
palace in Bucharest, said presidential adviser Octavian Stireanu. He
described the invitiation as of "deep political significance" and in line with
Iliescu's aim of normalising Romanian society. This included re-establishing
ties betwen the state and its former sovereign.

However the former king said he would unable to attend the exhibition, due
to "personal obligations that cannot be cancelled," according to a statement
issued by his aides. But a royal spokesman said the former king and his
family hoped to "return home in the nearest possible future." "In the
meantime, dialogue with the authorities continue," a statement from the
former king said. The ex-king's attempts to return to Romania have been
rebuffed several times previously by Iliescu.

Michael has never recognised Romania's republican constitution adopted in
1991 but had courteous relations with the previous 1996-2000 administration
of Christian-Democrat president Emil Constantinsescu. The ex-king was
stripped of his nationality by the communists shortly after he was forced to
abdicate in 1947. It was restored to him in 1997. (Agence France-Presse)

COUP D'ETAT IN 1913

nothing more than a group of private banks charging interest on money that

This sounds like conspiracy stuff? Why isn't anyone talking about something

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met today (Tuesday), 13.3.2001, in his
Jerusalem office, with a visiting European Union delegation led by
Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh.

Prime Minister Sharon told Foreign Minister Lindh that the main points
in his government's policy guidelines are the restoration of Israeli
citizens' personal security, achieving peace, maintaining a free market,
closing the gaps in Israeli society and increasing aliyah to Israel.

Prime Minister Sharon clarified to the EU delegation the dangers that
Palestinian terrorism - which is being mainly carried out by the
Palestinian security forces, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser
Arafat's presidential guard, Islamic Jihad, Hamas and the
Iranian-inspired and assisted Hizballah - poses both to Israel and
stability in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Sharon called on the free and democratic world to act
assertively against both local and international terrorism in order to
uproot the phenomenon of using terrorism to achieve diplomatic
objectives. The Prime Minister stressed that his goal is to act
aggressively against those who perpetrate terrorism, as well as against
those who aid and dispatch them to carry out their severe criminal acts,
while rendering assistance to peaceful populations that do not take part
in terrorism.

Prime Minister Sharon cautioned that in order for it to be possible to
assist the civilian population, PA Chairman Arafat must personally call
for a halt to both terrorism and incitement, begin counter-terrorist
actions and return to the security coordination.

Prime Minister Sharon said that the PA's current economic crisis stems
from the fact that the PA has chosen to use violence and terrorism, has
neglected the negotiations and has violated its agreements with Israel.
Regarding the funds that Israel owes the Palestinians, the Prime
Minister said that it is immoral to demand that Israel pay the salaries
of Palestinian forces that are involved in terrorist actions.

Prime Minister Sharon raised the issues of Israel's POWs and MIAs, the
Jews who were tried in Iran and the fate of Azzam Azzam.

Shalom,

Tonight I ran into a Kairite Jewish friend having dinner with his
sister at the Jerusalem Mall who was excited to tell me that this
afternoon he had located a field of barley IN AVIV!

AVIV is a stage of barley growth that indicates it is mature and
almost ready for harvest or "in the ear." I have every confidence that
this man knows AVIV barley as he has discussed the subject with me on
several occasions and we have examined samples of AVIV barley. The
Bible commands that the Passover be observed in the month of AVIV of
the barley harvest, VERY loosely translated in most English bibles as
simply, "in the spring."

This sighting provides the biblical basis to reckon the start of all
of the coming Hebrew festivals and celebrations, Passover, Shavuot,
Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Succot. However, at this juncture, these
dates are determined by RABBINIC sanction and "intercalation" of the
Hebrew calendar and do not always agree with the actual lunar
sightings associated with these dates in ancient times when the
Pharisees relied on a Sanhedrin to proclaim each new month as the moon
was sighted.

According to my Kairite friend, Nehamia Gordon, who earlier asked me
to work with some of my contacts in the Orthodox rabbinic community to
help bring these two calendar traditions closer together, the barley
field in Aviv was located at ELON, near Ma'ale Adumim or about 15
kilometers east of Jerusalem. (I was so excited with Nehamia that I
did not think to ask him whether the Aviv barley was sighted in a
cultivated field and when it was planted ... but I assume that since
the Kairites are even more strict about the observance of the current
Shmittah year (which forbids planting or harvesting once every seven
years) than the Orthodox Jewish community, that it is a wild field
previously planted in barley.

By Nehamia's find and according to a strict biblical interpretation,
the next new moon will begin the month of NISSAN, the next full moon
will begin PASSOVER and the seventh new moon from tonight will begin
the month of TISHREI and the Hebrew year 5762.

However, things are not so cut and dried. The rabbinic "intercalation"
of the calendar is designed to make the observances easier on the
people by adjusting the date of the fast of Yom Kippur, for instance,
so it does not fall on a Shabbat or the day before or after a Shabbat,
which makes preparing food a real hardship and interferes with
commands related to the Shabbat. When you adjust that date, if you
predetermine that each month will alternate between 30 and 29 days,
you adjust the entire calendar. The intercalation is also designed to
be sure that the festival of Passover is celebrated as close as
possible to the vernal equinox beginning the season of Spring, which
usually falls on March 20 in the Gregorian calendar.

That the Jewish spiritual leaders have been given the authority by G-D
to so adjust the calendar has been a debate among the Orthodox who
hold to the oral tradition that God fixed the seven days of the week
but the festivals can be adjusted, and Kairites (who reject the oral
tradition in its entirety) for untold centuries. These debates go even
further back historically to the differences between the Pharisees and
Saducees and will not be resolved at this writing!!!! (Even the oral
tradition makes it clear that when the Sanhedrin understood it would
be vested with the holy responsibility of fixing the dates of the new
moons and the festivals that the members of the Sanhedrin "put the
ball back in Hashem's court" by praying for wisdom from Hashem to do
so! In ancient times that wisdom involved observing the stages of the
moon. Today ... until a Sanhedrin is reconvened ... that wisdom has
been invested with the modern Pharisees (Orthodox rabbis) who
intercalate the calendar.

There are many convincing proofs in my mind that TODAY the rabbis
continue to have this authority sanctioned by Hashem to regulate THEIR
WEEKS. Most notable is the expression "in YOUR weeks" which pertains
to the counting of the Omer. If the omer is counted -- as is the
Kairite practice beginning on the first "first day" of the week
following a Passover, those WEEKS beginning with Sunday and ending
with Shabbat, are determined by Hashem from Creation and cannot be
changed, but the seven weeks from the second day of Passover to
Shavuot (the Orthodox reckoning) can begin and end on any day of the
week thus they are OUR weeks and different from Hashem's weeks.
Similarly the festivals are called YOUR festivals meaning the rabbinic
beit din (in the place of a Sanhedrin) has the authority to regulate
them. (Anyone interested in a detailed explanation of the rabbinic
view is recommended to STUDIES IN THE WEEKLY PARASHAH: THE CLASSICAL
INTERPRETATIONS OF MAJOR TOPICS AND THEMES IN THE TORAH, Volume
Vayikra, Portion Emor, pages 817-835 by Rabbi Y. Nachshoni, Art Scroll
Mesorah Publications, 1988 Jerusalem/Brooklyn, N.Y. ISBN
0-89906-938-1).

But until a Sanhedrin can be reconvened, and until the rabbis are
convinced it is time to revert to the biblical means of determining
the start of each month through physical observations of the moon,
Joes who submit to rabbinic authority (the seat of Moses which even
Y'shua invested with the Pharisees), should observe the rabbinically
sanctioned dates. I don't make this statement lightly or without VERY
much thought and prayer. In the final analysis it boils down to two
questions in my mind:

1) To what degree do you love your brother, Judah? If you know that
observing these festivals on different dates -- even in a different
month sometimes -- is an offense to Judah, should you as a JOE whose
heart is turned toward your brother, be connected with this offense?

2) ASSUMING that the rabbis are incorrect about their system, no good
is served by rebelling against it. Every good and loyal wife knows
that if her husband has decided on a course of action, she can only
change it by allowing HASHEM to do so as she submits to his authority
on the matter. To do otherwise is JUDGING her husband and thereby
precluding Hashem's judgment. (At the same time, the wife should have
the freedom to express her opinion on the matter.)

My personal opinion is that the months should be sighted by lunar
observation and the New Moon Society here in Israel is doing the
groundwork to make this a reality at some point in the future, but
this will probably not happen until a Sanhedrin vested with the
sanction of the Ruach Hakodesh (Holy Spirit) is reconvened. I also
believe the Oral Tradition makes a strong case for the rabbinic means
that the Omer is counted. Just as the Oral Tradition handed down by
Moshe to Joshua, the Judges and the Prophets and Levites explained
many many other aspects of Torah observance.

To persist in defying the rabbinic authority and celebrating the
Passover as much as a month later (as happened last year among some
Kairite-influenced Joes) only serves to perpetuate the enmity and
vexation between the families of Judah and Joseph ... and runs the
risk of repeating the sin of Yerovoam who changed the festivals of
Hashem!!

So, unless by some miracle the rabbis decide otherwise, the date of
Nissan 1 is sanctioned to begin at dusk on the evening of Saturday,
March 24, one or two days AFTER the actual new moon is sighted.

Rosh Hashanah, begins the very pivotal Hebrew year of 5762 on the
evening of Monday, September 17, Tishrei 1. Yom Kippur begins 10 days
later, and the week-long festival of Succot (Tabernacles), five days
after that.

Since Passover for the Kairites would be celebrated two nights earlier
when the moon is full and it is the Kairite practice to begin the 50
day counting of the omer leading to Shavuot or Pentecost, on the
Sunday during the week of Passover (the "morrow of the Shabbat"), the
Kairite Jews will begin counting the omer on Sunday, April 8. The
Orthodox Jews begin the count of THEIR WEEKS on the following day,
Monday, April 9, the second day of Passover.

This means Shavuot will fall according to the Kairite reckoning on the
day of Sunday May 27. The rabbinically sanctioned Orthodox Shavuot
begins at dusk that evening and continues through two days.

We will have more to write about the differences between the Kairite
and Orthodox views and our personal involvement in trying to bring
these two views closer together in the weeks and months to come.

4-13-01 THE POWER OF WORDS

When Israel does it to the Palestinians it is called "Siege" or
"Collective Punishment" but when the U.S. does it to Iraq it is
called "Sanctions". I don=92t see Iraqi=92s putting bombs on U.S.
School Buses, City Centers, and Public Transportation. The last I
heard they were not shooting at American on all the major highways
in the U.S. Yet it seems that what the U.S. is doing to Iraq is
called justified "Sanctions" and don=92t misunderstand me, I agree
that what the U.S. is doing to Iraq is called for and justified.

What I don=92t understand is how Colin Powell can make some of the
statements I heard him make. Or how he can be for the sanctions
against Iraq, and against Israel doing the same thing against the
Palestinians?

Israel has two options to try and stop the violence and terrorism
from the Palestinians. One is to put out an all out military
offensive that would leave thousands dead on the streets. The other
is to try and bring them to their senses by "Sanctions".

There is another contrast I have noticed, the sanctions we are
imposing against the Palestinians is working, it is about to bring
down their Dictator Yasser Arafat. And it is about to bring the
Palestinians to their senses. While the ten-year sanctions against
Iraq has only made Iraq stronger. So the only conclusion I can come
to, is when it works it=92s bad and if it fails it=92s ok.

Well that isn=92t the way we see it here in Israel. This morning I
woke to hear of a Bomb being discovered here in Bet Shemesh, thank
God it was discovered and disarmed before it went off and killed
more innocent Israeli=92s. Daily bombs are found and disarmed from
one end of Israel to the other. The international community seldom
hears about them. This one today was very close to our house, here
in Bet Shemesh.

Thousands of Iraqi volunteers started their military training
yesterday, to liberate Jerusalem. Saddam Hussein is calling it the
Jerusalem Army. As they marched to the buses to go off to their
training camps they chanted, "we will not give up "Palestine and
Saddam". The Iraqi Newspaper reported that when they asks for
volunteers over 7 million men and women came forward. But it also
must be understood that when Suddam ask for volunteers it is an
order not a request. Seven million is one third of their 22 million
population.

Since observing 'Ishtar Sunday' ('Easter Sunday' for those list members in
Palm Beach, FLA) on any particular date does not have a scriptural basis does
anybody see what, if any, point is being alluded to? The article is smattered
with prophetic buzzwords and I'm not sure why it has scrambled my eggs, but it
has. Could someone point me in the direction of a clue...Thanks,
