A COUPLE who sparked a row
over "designer" babies when they

have given away their embryo

Louise and Alan Masterton have
failed in their attempt to replace
their youngest child, Nicole, who
died in an accident two years
ago. The single embryo on which
they pinned their hopes for a new
baby girl is now in cold storage in
an Italian clinic, waiting to be
donated to a couple who have no
children of their own.=20
The Mastertons' case was
publicised last year after they tried unsuccessfully to overturn a
ban on sex selection. No fertility clinic in Britain would allow
them to pre-select a female embryo. The couple desperately
wanted a girl after Nicole, aged three, died following severe
burns in a garden fire.=20
She was the youngest of five and was born after her parents had
tried for 15 years to "balance" their four boys, who are aged
from 10 to 16.=20
The couple said they were heartbroken that they had not
produced a girl, but were happy to have donated the embryo to
a childless couple. Doctors in Italy will select that couple.=20
The Mastertons, from Monifieth, near Dundee, have told their
sons that they may have a brother born to another family. Alan
Masterton, 43, said: "The boys unanimously seem to think this
was a great gift."=20
The revelations about their trip to Italy will revive the debate over
the ethical implications of parents using new technology to
determine characteristics of children in advance.=20
They described this weekend how they went to Italy last
summer as a last hope after failing to win permission from the
Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to
undergo pre-gender diagnosis, a form of in-vitro fertilisation that
allows the sex of embryos to be chosen.=20
They secretly sought treatment at the private Biogenesi clinic in
Rome, financed by an =A38,000 loan from friends, after protracted
legal argument with the HFEA.=20
Dr Franco Lisi and Dr Leonardo Rinaldi, directors at the Italian
clinic, felt there were legitimate medical grounds to justify the
Mastertons' request.=20
Louise Masterton, 42, underwent hormone treatment from a
doctor in England before travelling to Italy, where the doctors
retrieved three eggs from her ovaries, two of which were too
immature to use. The one mature egg was fertilised with sperm,
but further analysis revealed it to be a male embryo.=20
Their case highlights the increasing availability outside Britain of
"pre-implantation diagnosis". The HFEA, which regulates fertility
clinics in Britain, prohibits such treatment, except on strict
medical grounds. But it is powerless to stop couples seeking
treatment elsewhere.=20
A spokesman for the HFEA said this weekend: "We have not
said no to the Mastertons. We said they should go to a clinic
which offers pre-gender diagnosis. That clinic should then apply
to the licence committee, and they would consider the
application.=20
"We have a policy that sex selection should be used only to
avoid serious, often life-threatening, disorders. However, a
licence committee can, and has, made decisions which are
contrary to HFEA policy."=20
The Mastertons now want to use the human rights act to force
the British authorities to relent. Alan Masterton, who described
the HFEA as a "stubborn, bureaucratic, uncaring authority",
said the couple had no money for another attempt abroad. He is
unemployed and Louise is studying on a legal course.=20
"The reason we did it was because we know the joy of having
kids. To think we may have helped another couple is satisfying.
Although we were disappointed, we felt we had got a chance the
HFEA had denied us in our own country." He added: "We are
not giving up."=20
Explaining why she wanted a daughter, Louise Masterton said
she had "never been so happy in my life" as when Nicole was
alive. "Even if we had 10 little girls, Nicole will still never be
here," she said. "We will always miss her."=20
The couple insisted that they were not trying to replace Nicole,
but to restore the "female dimension" to their family.=20
The inside story of their desperate attempts to have another
baby girl is revealed in the BBC documentary Fertility Tourists,
to be broadcast on Tuesday.=20
In the programme, Ruth Deech, chairman of the HFEA, defends
the authority's actions. She says: "We try to explain you should
not value one sex more highly than another, that you should not
throw away healthy embryos just because they are boys rather
than girls."=20
The Mastertons met at least 12 British couples seeking
sex-selection treatment in Italy. "It is not an oddball thing," said
Alan Masterton. "It is ridiculous that couples are subjected to
this."=20

Computer forensics booms as importance of electronic evidence grows=20

Kris Haworth is sitting around at the office, waiting for the day to end=20
so her work can begin.=20
When night falls, Haworth and several staff members plan to go to a=20
client's office, where the chief financial officer will be waiting to=20
let them in. Once inside, the team will open up several desktop=20
computers, pull out the hard drives and copy their entire contents onto=20
portable computers.=20
Haworth, 31, is one of Deloitte & Touche's computer forensics=20
investigators, private eyes for the digital age. For this case, her team=20
of eight is looking for evidence that an employee in her client's supply=20
department is accepting kickbacks from a vendor. Evidence the team finds=20
could lead to an employee's quiet dismissal or a lawsuit in which=20
Haworth might testify as an expert witness.=20
Computer forensics, once a discipline restricted to a small cloister of=20
law enforcement officers, is now a booming business. Demand for the=20
services is exploding as electronic evidence becomes more widely used in=20
court and as companies become increasingly concerned about the use of=20
computer networks for corporate spying and other mischief.=20
Deloitte & Touche is one of a growing number of consulting firms,=20
security vendors and companies devoted to computer forensics that are=20
stepping forward to fill the demand for electronic investigations.=20
STAGING A RAID
On this particular evening, the plan is to copy the contents of several=20
computers; the process takes 20 minutes per computer. The team will then=20
replace the hard drives, being careful to leave the desks without a=20
Post-It note out of place. When the employees return on Monday, they=20
will have no clue that, in a narrow, stuffy lab at Deloitte & Touche's=20
office in San Francisco, Haworth's team is poking around at data from=20
their PCs, looking for incriminating letters, memos, e-mails and=20
personal finance spreadsheets.=20
But for Haworth's team, this day will be disappointing -- the raid was=20
postponed. Haworth is not sure why it was delayed, but she wasn't=20
surprised -- plans change often under circumstances like this because=20
the client is nervous,=20
she said. Conditions also have to be perfect: A raid might be called off=20
because one of the suspects takes home a laptop for the weekend or=20
because employees are working late in the office.=20
But there will be a next time: Haworth's team gets several new cases=20
each day.=20
The cases Haworth takes on are as varied as Raymond Chandler gumshoe=20
Philip Marlowe's. Her team has pored over thousands of e-mail messages=20
for evidence that employees are spilling trade secrets; they've searched=20
for a "back door" to a computer network that a fired security manager=20
might have left himself; and they've recovered spreadsheets and letters=20
that embezzling executives thought they had deleted.=20
"It's one of the fastest-growing areas in information security services=20
spending," said Richard Dean, a program manager for International Data=20
Corp. in Framingham, Mass. IDC combines computer forensics with other=20
services that help companies respond to network security breaches,=20
whether those incidents are hacking intrusions or employee misbehavior.=20
SPACIOUS NEW OFFICE
U.S. companies spent $118 million on computer forensics and other=20
incident response services in 2000, and are expected to more than double=20
that to $277 million by 2004, according to IDC.=20
Like many accounting firms, D&T is expanding its forensics operation,=20
which it started three years ago. The eight investigators on the San=20
Francisco team will soon move from a single room to a spacious lab=20
occupying most of a floor in the company's high-rise office space on=20
Fremont Street. Soon they will be joined by several additional=20
investigators.=20
The biggest limit on the growth of computer forensics is the shortage of=20
investigators with the training and expertise to follow a digital trail=20
and present evidence that is acceptable to the courts.=20
"There's not a lot of places we can hire these people from," said Joan=20
Feldman, founder and president of Seattle's Computer Forensics Inc. "We=20
overcome the experience threshold problem by hiring from law=20
enforcement."=20
The Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation,=20
the Secret Service and even large city police agencies are all sources=20
of recruits.=20
By leaving the force and joining a computer forensics firm, computer=20
forensics investigators can make $100,000 more than what they used to=20
make annually, said Sean Walsh, president of the High Technology Crime=20
Investigation Association.=20
There are a handful of universities that offer classes and programs in=20
computer forensics, including George Washington University and Purdue.=20
But these programs have not yet become a major source of new recruits,=20
forensics managers say.=20
Most members of Deloitte & Touche's forensics team are young technology=20
professionals who have received several months of investigation training=20
and are learning more as they go along. Exceptions are Gail Ospedale, a=20
20-year CIA veteran, and Haworth herself, who has worked as a computer=20
network designer and holds a law degree from the Seattle University=20
School of Law.=20
DISPUTE OVER SEVERANCE PAY
For some team members, the Friday night raid was to be their first.=20
While disappointed that it was called off, the crew had plenty of other=20
cases to investigate back at the lab. Investigator Ospedale went through=20
the data of a computer used by another client's employee. In this case,=20
the team was hired to find proof that the employee was running a=20
pornographic Web site from his office computer. The worker, who had been=20
fired, was seeking severance pay, and the client was looking for grounds=20
to deny it.=20
Ospedale used an investigative software program called Encase to search=20
every document and image on the computer, including things that have=20
been deleted. The difficult part is not recovering data, but sorting=20
through the thousands of documents to find the relevant ones. She=20
searched for the word "adult" and came up with 28,000 documents. Many of=20
them were pornographic images downloaded from the Internet.=20
Wading through such images wasn't pleasant, but with 20 years at the=20
CIA, Ospedale has seen worse. In a way, the team members are like=20
employees in photo developing shops -- in the course of their work, they=20
come across very personal and sometimes embarrassing things.=20
NO SUCH THING AS DELETE
In five years of working as a computer investigator, Haworth has found=20
that most people still have no idea that their e-mail might be read by=20
others, or that their workplace computers belong to their employers and=20
can legally be searched without a subpoena.=20
"In e-mail, people say the most astounding things," she said.=20
And people -- even executives -- are still naive about how difficult it=20
is to truly delete something from a computer, Haworth said. In fact,=20
hitting the delete key simply moves a file to the recycle bin on a=20
Windows PC. Even after emptying the recycle bin, deleted documents are=20
still stored in the computer's memory and are easy for investigators to=20
recover. In fact, Haworth said, deleting a file only draws=20
investigators' attention to it.=20
"The first thing I always do is say, 'What did they delete?' " Haworth=20
said.=20
"We look for people trying to hide files by removing them."=20
What Haworth does is perfectly legal, because she always either has a=20
subpoena or is examining property that belongs to a client. Unless a=20
company has a privacy policy that promises not to do so, it's an=20
employer's legal right to monitor anything workers do on company-owned=20
equipment, said Cindy Cohn, legal director of San Francisco's Electronic=20
Frontier Foundation, a civil liberties group.=20
"(But) once you step beyond that there are some ethical issues that it=20
raises," Cohn said.=20
While teams like Haworth's can dig up valuable evidence, they can also=20
be used to intrude on employees unnecessarily, she said. "Technology=20
allows companies to do much more monitoring than they traditionally did.=20
I think that it demoralizes people and ultimately will have some impact=20
on productivity."=20
Haworth said that seeing what she's seen on work computers has changed=20
the way she uses her PC at Deloitte & Touche.=20
"Previous to this, I would go on my personal e-mail account at work. Now=20
I never would," she said.=20
THE NEW PAPER TRAIL
E-mail has proved to be such compelling evidence, both in and out of=20
court, that computer investigators spend much of their time sifting=20
through stacks of backup tapes holding months or even years of old=20
e-mails. Here are some cases in which e-mail evidence played a key role:=20
-- February 1998: E-mail messages in which Monica Lewinsky discussed her=20
affair with Bill Clinton were among the reams of evidence gathered by=20
Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr in his investigation of the former=20
president.=20
-- 1998-1999: In its antitrust case against Microsoft, the U.S.=20
government used e-mail messages from Bill Gates and other executives to=20
prove that the company was secretly plotting anti-competitive measures.=20
-- February 2000: Northwest Airlines searched flight attendants' home=20
computers and obtained e-mails showing that the workers had coordinated=20
an illegal sick-out.=20

The following is IMRA's translation of the letter from Prime Minister-elect
Ariel Sharon to the right-wing National Union-Yisrael Beiteinu Party as
published in today's Hebrew edition of Ha'aretz:
In coalition discussions with you we discussed a number of diplomatic and
other matters. In this regard, I would like to clarify a number of matters
and central positions as follows:
1.What is said in the government guidelines regarding UN resolutions 242 and
338 is subject, of course, to the Israeli interpretation of these
resolutions. Relating to this I would like to refer you to the
recommendation of the Attorney General's [Elyakim Rubinstein] recommendation
of 28.6.00 attached to this letter, which I accept, that summarizes the
Israeli position relating to this, as it was also presented in diplomatic
negotiations.
2. It is absolutely clear that ideas raised at the Camp David, Washington
and Taba summits are not valid, and do not enjoin a government which I will
head. The same is true concerning the Syrian track. This gains expression
also in the decision of the exiting government from Thursday 11.2.01, and
the letter of the retiring prime minister, Ehud Barak, to the U.S. president
and the head of the Palestinian Authority that are mentioned in it.
3. As I stated before and after my election, I don't intend to conduct
negotiations to attain peace agreements under pressure of terror and
violence. Relating to this, I would like to further emphasize what is said
in the draft of the guidelines that our commitment to the agreements that
Israel signed and were confirmed by the Knesset are subject to the honoring
of the obligations by the second party. First and foremost, the government
which I lead will demand that the Palestinian Authority agree to the
principle of resolving differences in peaceful ways, and abandon the route
of violence, terror and incitement and struggle with determination against
terror and violence directed against Israel, its citizens residents and
soldiers.
4. My commitment, and that of the Likud, to uphold a whole, united Jerusalem
under Israeli sovereignty, and to oppose categorically any division of the
eternal capital of the Jewish people is known and will not undergo any
change.
5. The government I head will act to solve the housing shortage for
immigrants, elderly, and young couples and will consider, among other
things, the possibility of construction for long term rental.
6. The public committee that will be established for the development of
broad national consensus on matters of basic law and constitution (according
to the coalition agreement) will be asked to examine, among other things,
the work of the lobby for a constitution in the Knesset.

1. Third terror attack victim dies
(BNI-MAR.4) An 85-year-old man from the Sharon area became the third
victim of the Sunday morning suicide bombing attack in Netanya. He died of
his injuries in Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera. The name has not yet been
cleared for release. The other two fatalities were females whose names are
also not cleared for publication at this time.=20
The fourth person killed in the attack was the suicide bomber.

2. Over 60 wounded in Netanya attack
(BNI-MAR.4) Over sixty persons were wounded in the Sunday morning=20
suicide
bombing attack on Herzl Street in Netanya. 32 persons were admitted to
Laniado Hospital in Netanya, one listed in serious condition, one moderate
and the remainder light.
11 persons are in Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera, one serious and the
remainder light.
An Arab man who was beaten by an angry mob following the attack remains=20
in
critical condition in the Sheba Medical Center at Tel HaShomer. Doctors
have indicated that despite his serious head injuries, there does not
appear to be permanent neurological impairment.=20=20
The remainder of the victims have already been released from hospital
emergency rooms.
A Netanya court has imposed a gag order on the publication of details
pertaining to the investigation into the attack.

3. Four Arabs wounded in Jerusalem supermarket stabbing=20
(BNI-MAR.4) An Israeli stabbed and wounded four Arabs in the SuperSol
supermarket on Agron Street in Jerusalem. According to officials in
Jerusalem=92s Hadassah Hospital in Ein Kerem, the victims are listed in
light and light-to-moderate condition.
Police report the man was apprehended and remains in custody. Police
explained the man began lunging at the Arabs after they witnessed him
trying to steal merchandise from the store.

4. President Katzav: =93=85a sad moment for the Palestinian people=94
(BNI-MAR.4) Following the Sunday morning Netanya suicide terrorist attack,
President Moshe Katzav stated, =93This is a sad moment for Israeli citizens
as well as for the Palestinian people.=94
=93The difficult happenings are causing the Israeli people to lose their
trust in the Palestinian leadership and their abilities to achieve peace,=

the president added.
Mr. Katzav concluded that the PA leadership is not displaying a desire or

safety and well-being of the Israeli people.

5. Arab suspected of collaborating with Israel murdered near Jenin
(BNI-MAR.4) Another Arab man suspected of cooperating with Israeli
security officials has been found murdered near the PA autonomous city of
Jenin on Sunday afternoon. The body displayed signs of violence.
Reports indicate the victim lived in Haifa and was an Israeli citizen who
was visiting family in Jenin.

6. Netanya residents have had enough
(BNI-MAR.4) Following the Sunday morning terrorist attack in Netanya, the
second in less than two months in the same area, residents took to the

A large force of police was on hand to maintain order but kept a distance,
permitting demonstrators to express their wrath following the latest of
attack which claimed three innocent lives and injured over sixty.

attacked by PA gunfire near the Southern Hebron Hills community of Beit
Haggai a short time ago. Two bullets were fired at soldiers operating in

Naftali Din will be laid to rest on Monday, March 5, in the Tel Mond

Two of the three died as physicians worked to save their lives but without
success. 48 victims of the blast remain hospitalized on Sunday night.
Police remain on alert and are deployed in major cities and =91sensitive
areas=92 in larger numbers in the hope of thwarting future terror attacks.=

(BNI-MAR.4) Yisrael B=92Aliyah Party leader MK Natan Sharansky has called
upon Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon not to delay any longer and present

Sharansky stated that he and his colleagues can continue coalition
negotiations after Sharon takes the oath of office and even if they do not
arrive at an agreement, the party will provide Sharon=92s administration
with a security net on vital issues.

(BNI-MAR.5) Following a Monday afternoon meeting with Prime Minister-elect
Ariel Sharon, Gesher Party leader MK David Levy stated he was not going to
serve as a minister in the new administration.
Levy stated the atmosphere was good during the meeting but he was
uninterested in serving as a minister without a portfolio in such a large
government. Levy stated that doing so would just serve the purpose of

2. Seven fatalities in southern area MVA
(BNI-MAR.5) Emergency medical service officials report that five adults
and two children were killed in a Monday afternoon motor vehicle accident
in southern Israel at Mishmar HaNegev Junction. Two vehicles were involved
in a head-on collision and a third vehicle rear-ended one of the other
cars.
Three persons were injured in the accident, one serious and two light. As
reported earlier, the injured were transported to the Soroka Medical
Center in Beersheba.=20
Police theorize a driver passing a vehicle and striking another head-on
caused the accident that occurred about one kilometer (6/10 mile) from
Kibbutz Mishmar HaNegev.=20
It was also pointed out that weather conditions were good at the time of
the accident, the roadway is straight and there are traffic signals.
Police investigators believe passing irresponsibly in this case claimed

He remains in serious but stable and improved condition in the Sheba
Medical Center in Tel Aviv. He sustained head injuries and bruises over
his entire body after tens of Israeli took out their rage against him.
Police investigators at this juncture of the investigation into the attack
cannot say with certainty that Bassam was not involved in the planning of
the attack, explaining the request for extending his remand.

will be laid to rest in the Tel Mond Cemetery on Monday at 3:30pm. He too
was killed in the blast.

A leading contender to succeed the Pope has been accused of medieval
mumbo-jumbo after publishing 10 rules on how to resist Satan's temptations.
Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, 66, the archbishop of Genoa, dedicated his
lenten letter to combating the fascination of a devil who is charming, shrewd
and very real.
Those who follow his 10-step programme are promised the ability to rebuff
offers of forbidden fruit, unlike Adam and Eve.
First rule: "Do not forget that the devil exists."
Rule two: "Do not forget that the devil is a tempter."
Rule three: "Do not forget that the devil is very intelligent and astute."
Cardinal Tettamanzi, widely seen as a conservative frontrunner to succeed
the Pope, urges permanent watchfulness. "Be vigilant in the eyes and the
heart. Be strong in spirit and virtue."
Another five rules recommend tireless prayer, adoring God, listening to His
words, remembering Christ's victory over temptation and man's sharing in
that victory.
Obeying the tenth rule, though, should seal the devil's defeat: "Be humble
and love mortification."
Cardinal Tettamanzi is a moral theologian who has helped the Pope write
encyclicals. The pastoral letter raised his profile as the candidates jockey to
replace the ailing pontiff, 81 in May.
The Milan-based Theological Studies Centre, which is independent of the
Vatican, condemned the letter for bringing Satan back into the realm of
human responsibility.
By raising the spectre of diabolical machinations rather than human evil, the
cardinal was reaching back into the middle ages and ignoring scientific
advances in psychology, the centre claimed.
"To attribute guilt to the devil could encourage people to be irresponsible," it
said.
According to La Repubblica, the centre also accused the church of having
exploited Satan in centuries past to persecute heretics and cultural
minorities, such as gays.
In recent decades, the role of the devil has become a fraught topic in
theology, splitting those who believe he is real and those who believe he
symbolises mankind's capacity for evil.
Also known as Lucifer and Beelzebub, according to the Bible he is a fallen
angel who sinned by pride and was banished from heaven.
He is allowed by God to exercise influence on living and inanimate creatures -
tempting Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and Jesus in the wilderness.
The Italian Bishops Conference has recently agonised about how to address
the devil during exorcisms following a Vatican decision to translate into
Italian the venerable Latin formula, Vade retro Satanas.
Bishops were unsure which form of "you" to use - the familiar "tu" or formal
"lei".

Spiritualists' powers turn scientists into believers

A UNIQUE scientific experiment has produced startling evidence that
some "spirit mediums" may indeed have paranormal talents.
Scientists involved in the study at the University of Arizona say
that the findings are so extraordinary they raise fundamental
questions about the survival of consciousness after death.
Until now, the whole issue of the "afterlife" has been dismissed by
most mainstream scientists, with spiritual mediums being regarded as
either self-deluded or charlatans. Now the first serious laboratory
study of a group of mediums has found that they share an uncanny
ability to state facts about the deceased relatives of people who
come to them.
The experiments, details of which will be published this week,
involved five mediums and two "sitters" unknown to the mediums, whose
deceased relatives they were asked to contact.
In the first experiment, each medium spent an hour with one of the
sitters in a laboratory, with a screen preventing visual contact.
Under constant video surveillance, each began talking about aspects
of the sitter's deceased relatives. The sitter was only allowed to
respond to specific questions from the medium with the words "yes"
or "no". At the end of each session, the information gleaned by the
mediums was analysed for its accuracy.
The transcripts of each session showed that the mediums typically
produced more than 80 pieces of information about the deceased
relatives, ranging from their names and personal idiosyncrasies to
the precise circumstances of their death. When analysed for factual
accuracy, the mediums achieved a success rate of 83 per cent, with
one achieving an accuracy of 93 per cent.
Similar success was achieved in experiments involving the second
sitter, and even when the mediums were not allowed to communicate
with the sitter in any way. Sceptics have long argued that the
success of mediums is due to so-called "cold reading", in which
mediums make educated guesses about deceased people - such as asking
if a husband died of heart disease, which is a common cause of death.
The team claims to have dealt with this objection after a panel of
more than 60 people was asked to supply the same information as the
mediums about the sitter. The average score was only 36 per cent,
with the most successful guesser achieving just 54 per cent.
Reporting their findings in the forthcoming issue of the Journal of
the Society for Psychical Research, the researchers conclude: "Highly
skilled mediums are able to obtain accurate and replicable
information." Professor Gary Schwartz, who led the team, told The
Telegraph: "The bottom line is that there is a class of highly
skilled mediums who are doing something extraordinary."
The secret of their success is unclear: every precaution was taken to
rule out unconscious cheating or outright fraud. In one experiment, a
medium claimed to have been in communication with the sitter's
deceased mother three days before the meeting - and supplied a prayer
that the mother used to recite for the sitter as a child.
Prof Schwartz said such evidence is consistent with claims of mediums
to deal directly with the dead, rather than merely with the minds of
the sitters. He said: "All the data gathered so far is consistently
in accord with survival of consciousness after death. Based on our
data to date, the most parsimonious explanation is that the mediums
are in direct communication with the deceased."
Sceptics said that while the results are intriguing, they leave many
questions unanswered. Dr Chris French, a leading expert at Goldsmiths
College, London, said: "Parapsychologists have become disillusioned
with studies of mediums because the results are usually nothing more
than you would expect by cold reading. This study has results that
are so out of line that one would want to have a very close look at
how it was done."
The implications of the study are to be discussed at an international
meeting in Arizona this week. Prof Schwartz admitted that the
findings were likely to disturb many people. He said: "Some of our
colleagues would like us to do this research elsewhere."

Scientists are preparing to start trials of the world's first genetically
modified insect, an unnatural born killer moth that will fly over cotton
fields, passing a deadly gene on to its pestilent kin as an alternative to
pesticide.
Although the GM moth will be released in Arizona, the technology used to
create the killer gene has been developed by a British team led by Luke
Alphey, of Oxford University. The scientists believe that the chances of the
killer gene spreading beyond the species it is intended to harm, the pink
bollworm, is very small, and would do no harm if it did.
But the US department of agriculture still has to give consent for the first
part of the trial, which would involve a tightly controlled release of moths
with another gene inserted to track any possible cross-species transfer.
Scientists need to target the bollworm larvae, which feed on cotton plants,
before developing into moths. The idea is to take insect eggs in the lab and
insert into their DNA a gene from a fruit fly which would normally damage
their metabolism so badly that they would die.
In the lab, however, the larvae survive, because they are dosed with an
antidote to the effects of the killer gene. They will grow into adult moths,
which are naturally immune to the effects of the gene, and will then be
released over the cotton fields in huge numbers.
Unaware that by mating they are both creating and assassinating the next
generation, the GM moths will mate with wild moths and each other. The
female moths will lay their eggs as normal. But their offspring will have
inherited the killer gene. In the wild, the larvae will find no antidote and
will die.
In the initial trial, which could take place next year, 3,600 moths will be
given a jellyfish gene that glows under special light instead of the killer
gene. This will show what happens to GM insects when they encounter their
wild counterparts and other species.

Please Excuse My Miscalculations.
Over the past decade or more, in my lectures and particularly in the
November 1996 RESEARCHER, I have indicated that we might
expect...prophetic events to be wrapped-up before and during Israel's
Jubilee year. Since the rebirth of Israel took shape during the years
of 1947, 1948 and 1949, I projected that the climactic events should
be expected a Jubilee or 50 years later. The things simply did not
happen as quickly as I had anticipated. As the old adage goes, "a
watched pot never boils." All the players were on the field, the
spectators were all in the stadium, but the whistle never blew for
the kick-off. Then Something Did Happen!
As the Jewish New Year 5761 rolled around, those things we expected
to happen began to fall into place. Why the almost three year delay?
My daughter Sarah and I were discussing these expectations when she
reminded me that this was the second Shmitah (Sabbatical Year) that
they have lived in Israel on the settlement of Ma'aleh
Levonah. "Yeah, Dad, you know that the Rabbis say that next year 5762
is the Jubilee year because 5761 is the seventh Shmitah since the
establishment of Israel in 1948 or 5708."
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the dumbest of them all? Why did I
calculate 1998-1999 as Israel's Jubilee year, when it was only the
50th anniversary year of the formation of the state? It was not the
50th Jubilee year? The Rabbis calculate the first Shmitah in Israel's
Third Commonwealth as beginning in 1951, three years after their
Independence. Hence, counting seven Shmitahs or 49 years brings us to
the year 5761 on the Jewish Lunar Calendar or October 1st, 2000 CE on
the western Gregorian Calendar. This is the beginning of the Seventh
Shmitah year or the Seventh Sabbatical year of this Third
Commonwealth of Israel.

Dear David:
When I consider scripture against scripture regarding the ‘son of
perdition´, I conclude the ‘son of perdition´ of John 17:12 refers to
Judas, not Satan, and the context of 2 Thess. 2:3 indicates to me that
the ‘man of sin´, will not be Satan but the beast of the end times. 2
Thess. 2:6, I think, refers to the ‘man of sin´ of 2:3, not to Satan but
to the beast.
There is no doubt, in my mind, David, that Jesus finished His work on
the cross and ‘his activities to defeat death´ were done. Our Lord did,
indeed, defeat death but we know He did not, at that time, defeat
‘physical´ death so it must have been ‘spiritual' death. From the time
Satan led Eve to sin in the Garden of Eden, and Adam followed suit, as
God had told them, they ‘died´. We know they did not die physically but
spiritually so it follows, I think, that the death defeated by Our Lord
was spiritual death. Since His death and resurrection anyone who
confesses with their mouth that Jesus is the Son of God will be saved.
I think they are saved from spiritual death. It would appear that, from
the time of Adam and Eve until his defeat by Our Lord, Satan had power
over spiritual death and, because of that, not one could be born again,
‘of the Spirit of God´, until Satan´s control over spiritual death was
taken away. It now rests in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
Praise the Lord!
Thanks, my friend, for leading me to think about the above. Like
yourself I do not have all the answers but I think, in this instance, we
can arrive at a logical, scriptural answer to Genesis 3:14 "…it shall
bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." The ‘it´, I think,
was Our Lord, Jesus Christ ;‘the head´, Satan´s pride, and the ‘heel´,
our Lord´s ability to ‘walk´, to put His feet on the earth.
Satan, I am sure, was proud of the fact that he had the power over
spiritual death so his head was ‘bruised´, his pride was hurt when he
lost that power but he still has so much pride he still thinks he can be
God. Jesus now has power over spiritual death and, because of that,
‘whosoever will´ can be born again in the spirit. Praise the Lord!
I am not too clear on what is meant by ‘bruise his heel´. I think Our
Lord appeared a number of times, physically, in the Old Testament and we
know He appeared, physically, shortly after His resurrection, but He
only did so to believers, in Israel, and He had told them He would do
so. We know since then, when people are ‘born again´, Jesus reveals
Himself to them, spiritually, through the Holy Spirit, and they become
His physical representatives on earth but He told the Israelites they
would not see Him again until they say "blessed is he that cometh in the
name of the Lord." (Matthew 23:39, Luke 13:35) As I say, the meaning
of ‘bruise his heel´ is not completely clear. God willing we will know,
someday. Praise the Lord!

WINS NASA AWARD
Faced with the daunting task of reducing hazardous
rocket-fuel waste, a team of inventive scientists and
engineers from NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC), FL, found a
way to really clean up, while at the same time produce a
commercially successful and safe byproduct.
The team developed a process to convert the hazardous waste
to a helpful fertilizer and was honored with NASA's
Commercial Invention of the Year Award.
The invention was developed by NASA's Dr. Clyde Parrish, Dr.
Dale Lueck, Andrew Kelly and Dynacs Engineering's Paul
Gamble. Together, they developed the new process in response
to an Agency request to reduce the hazardous waste stream
captured in a scrubber when a toxic oxidizer is transferred
back and forth from storage tanks into the space shuttle's
Orbital Maneuvering Subsystem (OMS) and Reaction Control
System (RCS) pods. The shuttle's OMS is used for the major
orbital and deorbit maneuvers and the RCS is used for orbiter
attitude control.
The process was tested and is being implemented at Kennedy,
where it is being used on orange groves located on the
center's grounds.
"We have a number of talented scientists and engineers on our
team and we're proud of them. I believe this is just the
first of many such awards for the Kennedy Space Center," said
Kennedy Director Roy Bridges. It is the first time Kennedy
has won the award, given annually by NASA Headquarters to
recognize a significant technology spinoff developed at one
of the Agency's centers.
The inventors will be honored at a ceremony at NASA
Headquarters in April where the team will receive a check and
a certificate from the NASA Administrator. The technology
will be submitted as NASA's nominee for the Intellectual
Property Owners Inc. Invention of the Year award, which is
held in cooperation with the United States Patent and
Trademark Office.
"This was very much a team effort," said Gamble, the current
lead for the project at Dynacs Engineering. Dynacs is the
engineering development contractor at Kennedy. "We're all
very proud to have been a part of it. When we're able to
commercialize a technology we've developed at KSC, it
benefits everyone. It's another example of how the space
program makes all our lives better," said Gamble.
Parrish suggested the original idea for the technology and
led development of the process, which started while he worked
at Dynacs. Parrish had worked on a Navy project team 25 years
before that found an oxidizer used in battlefield
illumination flares could be used as a fertilizer. Parrish
has numerous patents and awards to his credit.
"When we were approached with the technical challenge to
reduce hazardous waste, I remembered the flare oxidizer
project. I thought the scrubber chemistry could be modified
to produce a fertilizer," Parrish said.
The invention has been licensed to Phoenix Systems
International Inc. of McDonald, Ohio, an engineering firm
that develops technologies applied to utility and industrial
fossil fuel. The U.S. Air Force also has expressed interest
in the technology for launch facilities at Cape Canaveral Air
Force Station, FL, and Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA.
The award represents another success for Kennedy's Technology
Programs and Commercialization Office. The office works with
KSC scientists and engineers to report new technologies and
commercialize them when possible.
"Our office has been striving to create an awareness of all
facets of new technology reporting, including the awards
program. As a part of this effort, we're seeking to provide
more recognition for our inventors and their inventions,"
said Pam Bookman, a commercialization manager for the office.
"Our people have always produced new technologies to cope
with the operational challenges we face, but they're
realizing more often now that those technologies can often be
commercialized."

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - A former Australian army commando
plans
to jump off the edge of outer space and plummet almost 25 miles to
Earth in the highest skydive ever.
Rodd Millner, 37, will make the 40,000-meter jump by riding in a
hot air balloon to the edge of space, the Australian Associated
Press reported Sunday. He will wear an astronaut's suit to protect
his body from extreme pressures, it said.
The plan calls for Millner to fall at up to 1,100 mph during a
seven-minute fall before opening a parachute. If he succeeds, he
will break the sound barrier, the report said.
``It's basically extreme science to see how far we can push it _
this is going to change the face of a lot of things ... including
emergency procedures for people exploring space,'' he was quoted as
saying by AAP.
Millner claims that scientists have helped him on the project,
but it is not known if the human body is capable of enduring such a
descent.
The jump may be a relaxing change for Millner, who teaches
explosives and mine warfare to Australian army recruits.
Millner hopes to turn his plunge into a virtual computer game
using film from cameras that will be fitted to his suit and the
balloon.
Project Space Jump will be launched from Alice Springs in March
2002.

Me Again, Dear Ones:
Off and on, for a couple of years, I have had contact with group who
are actively alerting people to the fact that the tribulation could
start in our lifetime. Unfortunately, to my mind, they maintain the
church will continue to be on earth during the tribulation and those
who are alive, at the end of it, will be 'raptured'. I had several
nonproductive 'discussions' with the leader of the group and finally
gave up. Last week I received another copy of their periodical. I saw
they were still preaching the same thing and, as had become my custom,
threw it into the trash. However, I was led to retrieve it from the
trash in order to get their email address. I then wrote a prayer to
God, asking Him to wake them up to the fact that their preaching was
leading people to be ‘fearfully looking´ for ‘judgment and fiery
indignation´, as in Hebrews 10:27, rather than joyfully ‘looking for
that blessed hope´, the redemption, of Titus 2:12-14. (I think only
those who are joyfully looking will see the Lord when He comes in the
clouds.)
The prayer was addressed to God, of course, but I felt, in all
fairness, since I was praying for them, I should tell them so and send
them a copy, via email. I then prepared the email and addressed 'send
to' as <heaven@eternity.for> (the 'for' is short for 'forever'). I then
put their address under 'copy to' and pushed send. Nothing happened. I
checked what I had written, found I had an error in one scripture
reference, made the correction and pushed 'send' again. The message was
transmitted and, much to my surprise, the server did not reject the
heavenly address. Usually an invalid address triggers an immediate
rejection but this time it did not. I went off to church thinking it
was possible I had found an email 'hot line to heaven'. I know we
already have such a line for when we pray to God, in the Name of Jesus
Christ, we know He hears us, even before we pray, but I thought there
was a chance, since nothing is impossible to God, that He had an email
address. It may be that He does have one but the address I used is the
wrong one for I received an 'address rejection message' today. C'est la
vie! You can't kill a man for trying. If you should find the right

The Purification by the Red Heifer

The purification by the Red Heifer is a subject that has been a mystery even
to the Jews who were given this ritual to perform. It has been understood by
the Jewish Rabbis in the sense of an act of obedience. In other words do these
things and do it in this way and your cleansing can be assumed. But from the
perspective of the church there may be a little more insight that is not
apparent to the Rabbis. Lets look first at the ritual and see if we can
understand some of this mystery.
NU 19:1 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: [2] "This is a requirement of the
law that the LORD has commanded: Tell the Israelites to bring you a red heifer
without defect or blemish and that has never been under a yoke. [3]
Give it to Eleazar the priest; it is to be taken outside the camp and
slaughtered in his presence. [4] Then Eleazar the priest is to take some of
its blood on his finger and sprinkle it seven times toward the front of the
Tent of Meeting. [5] While he watches, the heifer is to be burned--its hide,
flesh, blood and offal. [6] The priest is to take some cedar wood, hyssop and
scarlet wool and throw them onto the burning heifer. [7] After that, the
priest must wash his clothes and bathe himself with water. He may then come
into the camp, but he will be ceremonially unclean till evening. [8] The man
who burns it must also wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he too will
be unclean till evening.
The Red Heifer is a type of Yeshua. This is why it remains to this day a
mystery to the Jews, because they are blinded for a time to the things
concerning Messiah. The Red Heifer symbolizes a rare find. In order for a
cow to qualify, it must be perfect, without blemish, and must be totally
red. There can be no white hairs at the time it is to be slaughtered Yeshua is
that kind of rare find, that bit of the miraculous that only comes around in
life once. He is Gods Grace, and forgiveness made manifest as man. . It is to
be a cow that has never been yoked. This can be seen as having never been put
to other service such as the priesthood, or can symbolize having never been
married, and both would apply to Yeshua.
The Heifer was not a sacrifice in the sense of a blood covering for sin, but
was a means or a process that was to bring a cleansing from defilement, or
sin. It wasn't a substitutional sacrifice like the male goat of Yom Kippur,
but a day by day cleansing as needed. It was a cow and not a bull. I believe
this speaks of the continuous access of this cleansing, like a mother who is
always close at hand to her children, as opposed to the father who is often
times away from the children as required by his labors.
The cow was taken outside the camp to be slaughtered. Yeshua also was taken
outside the city, to Golgatha to be slaughtered. The actual killing of the
heifer was carried out by Priests of the second order. Eleazar was the son of
Aaron, who was then the high priest. It is much like the time of Yeshua, when
the chief priest and Pharisee's sought His death and it was approve of by
Caiaphas, the high priest. Yet it was the Romans who served as the workers to
do the actual slaughter. This slaughter is to take place outside the camp. Yet
there is still a unbreakable connection to the throne of God as Eleazar was to
take a small amount of the blood and with his fingers and sprinkle it toward
the tent of meeting, the holy place. Seven times because this is Gods seal.
Anything that is done seven times is a permanently fixed thing, that can not
be broken. It speaks of finality. Think of Joshua and the seven days of
marching around Jericho, and the seven blasts on the trumpet, in Revelation
the seven seals, seven trumpets and seven bowls. So here the priest makes the
binding connection to the place of God's presence, the tent of meeting. Yet
some of the blood will be lost, spilled on the ground.
The heifer itself will be burned in it's entirety. It will not be separated
out or the hide removed or the fat separated or anything like this. It's bones
are not broken, it is burned all at once. Yeshua went as he was, having been
inspected for days by the priests and the teachers of the law, and they could
find no flaw in Him, yet they killed Him. It was like those priest that
inspected the red cow for any sign of defect or any white hairs. And like the
Heifer he became a cleansing for us all. The slaughter of the cow and it's
burning are a picture of the death and burial of Yeshua. They were to take
Cedar, probably red cedar, Hyssop, and red stuff, probably red wool and throw
it onto the heifer when it was burning. These items refer to the cleaning
aspect of the ashes that were to be produced from this cow. The sort of paint
brush that was made to sprinkle the people or item to be cleaned, was made
from hyssop tied with red wool to a cedar handle. Hyssop was used to spread
the lambs blood on the door posts in the exodus. So these items added to the
fire are ritual, (not magic) that speak of the sprinkling of purification.
NU 19:9 "A man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and put
them in a ceremonially clean place outside the camp. They shall be kept by the
Israelite community for use in the water of cleansing; it is for purification
from sin.
It was Joseph of Aramathea and Nicodemus who had come secretly to the Lord,
who then were to deliver the Lords body to its resting place, in an
undefiled tomb in which no man had even been laid. They themselves would
become unclean and unable to eat the Passover Meal if they had not already
done so, as Yeshua and his followers had.
The priest and the worker who burn the heifer are considered unclean. They
must wash themselves and their cloths in water, and they still remain
ceremonially unclean until the end of the day. Yet those who are sprinkled
with this same ash will be considered clean. It is interesting that for a
Jew, if you touch, or embrace Yeshua, you have become unclean, yet we know
that when Yeshua touches you, you become pure. He is that one grace that
saves us from our uncleanness, not once a year, but in our daily walk with
the Lord.
Lets look at how these ashes of the heifer might be used. Contact with the
dead would defile a person. If your relative died, whether by sword or by
natural causes you needed to prepare their bodies and bury them. Yet by
doing so you became unclean. If you were in a room that had a container with
the remains of the dead in it and the container was opened, then everyone in
the room was defiled and would also need purification. These ashes, which were
ceremonially mixed with water, would be that which would cleanse. If you
failed to follow this ritual and get cleansed, not only did you remain unclean
and tainted by sin, but the holy sanctuary was also considered unclean and
there was a risk of driving the Lord's presence from among the people. So this
is a picture of God's daily grace to us, that cleanses us from our
unrighteousness each time we become defiled. Unlike Yom Kippur which is once a
year and is a picture of our repentance and God's salvation. The Red Heifer is
a picture of Sanctification and purification.
Heb 10: [22] let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of
faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and
having our bodies washed with pure water.
1JN 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is
not in us. [9] If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will
forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
So Yeshua cleanses us every day so that we can enter once again into His
presence, and not be considered ceremonially unclean. For He cleanses us by
sprinkling our hearts, to wash us of our defilement. He does this so that we
can serve Him. This is the Grace of God that is always available to us.
HEB 9:13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled
on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are
outwardly clean. [14] How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who
through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our
consciences from acts that lead to death,* so that we may serve the living
God!
Another aspect of this cleansing was the timing of the rituals. It was to be
done on specific days. This too has been a mystery even to the Jews who
practiced it. But it was adhered to in obedience without understanding,
because failure to do so defiled not only the person but also the
Tabernacle.
NU 19:11 "Whoever touches the dead body of anyone will be unclean for seven
days. [12] He must purify himself with the water on the third day and on the
seventh day; then he will be clean. But if he does not purify himself on the
third and seventh days, he will not be clean. [13] Whoever touches the dead
body of anyone and fails to purify himself defiles the LORD's tabernacle. That
person must be cut off from Israel. Because the water of cleansing has not
been sprinkled on him, he is unclean; his uncleanness remains on him.
Here is what I see in this as it applies to us today. We as believers in
Yeshua are continually going through the process of sanctification for the
purpose of being able to serve Him. We can not be unclean and serve. There
is a process that begins when we are Born again. Part of the ceremony of the
Red Heifer is mixing the ashes with water and the water then is used to wash
away the defilement or sin. This is like our own water baptism, that washes
away our sins. Yet baptism is part of the law and deals more with outward
things than inner things and the spirit. The law says "You shall not Kill" but
Yeshua says that if you have anger in your heart towards someone you have
killed them in your heart and are guilty of murder. So the things that Yeshua
brought are deeper and cut to the bone even to the marrow, the center of the
bone. So we must be cleansed in a deeper way. We must have our very nature
changed. We must be born again, this time born of the spirit. When we are born
again, we have a little problem, because we are still daily in contact with a
dead body, our own and are defiled. We say that our flesh has been crucified
with Yeshua on the cross, but we all know that it still has it's effect on us,
because we are stuck in this thing.
RO 7:21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right
there with me. [22] For in my inner being I delight in God's law; [23] but I
see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law
of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my
members. [24] What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of
death? [25] Thanks be to God--through Jesus Christ our Lord!
When will we see the final victory over this body and it's power of sin and
death? In the resurrection or for those who remain alive, in the Rapture when
we are changed in a moment of time.
RO 6:5 If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will
certainly also be united with him in his resurrection.
1CO 15:42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is
sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; [43] it is sown in dishonor, it
is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; [44] it is
sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body....
[51] Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be
changed-- [52] in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.
For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will
be changed. [53] For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable,
and the mortal with immortality.
This process began for us when the Holy spirit was given to us, when we were
born again, and it will be completed when we are at last delivered from the
confines of this sinful and faulted flesh, the body of sin. The Lord does this
in stages. We accept Him as savior, and are baptized like the washing with the
water and ashes. He gives us the Holy Spirit to help us in our walk in this
life. And then the resurrection will deliver us from the body of sin and
liberate us totally in the Spirit.
So in baptism we each have a type of death experience and a washing
ceremony. Then we have a Pentecost experience where the Holy Spirit is
poured out on our lives to begin the actual work of purification or
sanctification, and then the Rapture or Resurrection experience, which is
yet to come. We can see in the ritual of the Red Heifer that there were two
days that a person had to come and be sprinkled with the ashes. On the Third
day and on the Seventh day.
Num 19:19 The man who is clean is to sprinkle the unclean person on the
third and seventh days, and on the seventh day he is to purify him.
There may be a reason why these two days were specified. The clue is in
Leviticus 23, the feast days of the Lord. There were seven days that were
to be a Holy convocation, a Holy gathering. These are the days of the Lord:
1 The first day of Unleavened Bread
2.The seventh day of Unleavened Bread
3.Pentecost
4.Rosh Ha Shannah or Trumpets
5.Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement
6.The First day of Sukkot or Tabernacles
7.The Eighth day of Sukkot which is Simchat Torah, the eighth day.
The purification with the ashes of the Red Heifer was to take place on the
third day and the seventh day. Looking at this list may bring us yet another
picture of Gods plan and His timing. The third day of the Holy yearly cycle is
Pentecost. This is when both the old covenant, the law, was given and the new
covenant when the Spirit was poured out on the believers and the church began.
We must remember that the things that are connected to Yeshua are New
covenant, which speaks to the Spirit and not just the outward things. So the
first step of out purification is on our Pentecost experience as we receive
the Holy Spirit. And the completion of it is on the seventh day, when we are
delivered from the body of sin and death, in the resurrection or Rapture. So
lets look for a moment to the picture that is painted for us in the seventh
day of convocation which is the eighth day of the feast of Tabernacles.
It is an extra day. The feast runs for seven days, beginning on the 15th of
Tishreri . It is a feast that looks forward to our living in His presence. The
feast is known by the following names.
1. The feast of In-gathering
2. The feast of the Final harvest
3. The time of our dwelling (with Him)
4. The season of our Joy
5. The feast of dedication. (because the Temples were dedicated on this
feast)
On the eighth day there is the extra day, which is known as the holding
back, the time to tarry in His presence. It is a picture of the beginning of a
new time, as well as the ending of a previous time. It is the end of the Torah
reading cycle and the beginning of a new one. The Torah is read from the
preachers pulpit known as the Bema Seat. This is all a picture of the Bema
judgment and our beginning to dwell with Yeshua in the Millennial Kingdom. It
would therefore also be after the final victory for the believer has been won,
deliverance from the flesh, the body of death. Being delivered from the body
of death he is now cleansed for service to the Lord. Could this seventh day of
convocation, the eighth day of the Tabernacles, be the day of our redemption?
I guess only time will tell, but I will never view this day in the same way as
I have in the past. Every thing the Lord does is for a reason, to show us
something, to reveal some other aspect of Himself or His plan for us, and the
two days chosen to complete our purification must be viewed the same way. It
was the third and the seventh days that we were to be washed in the Ashes of
the Red Heifer, washed in the waters of Yeshua. We wait now for the washing on
the seventh day. Maybe that is the eighth day of Tabernacle for us, the seven
day of the Lords Holy days the day that look forward to the Bema judgement
when believers works of righteousness are rewarded by the Lord. In so far as
Yeshua and the fulfillment of the feast days, Pentecost was expressly for
those who would become the church. Perhaps the seventh day, the day of
lingering with Him, the end of the cycles of time, the beginning of eternity,
will be the
conclusion for the church as well.

AMR Corporation, the parent of American Airlines, and the likely purchaser
of the assets of TWA from bankruptcy proceedings, announced suddenly on
February 28, 2001 that it intends to "suspend" daily TWA service to Tel Aviv
as it "concluded it does not make economic sense to continue the route at
this time."
This surprise, last-minute announcement raises serious questions as to why
Israel has been singled out for changes in TWA service - since the economic
facts demonstrate clearly that the JFK daily flight has been and remains
very profitable - in spite of the recent slowdown in tourism to Israel -
certainly more profitable than flights to Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which will
not be "suspended" or cancelled.
In 1999 the New York-Tel Aviv line has earned profits of $10 Million for
TWA.
In 2000 the direct line earned profits of $8.5 Million, despite the slowdown
of tourism is the 4th quarter. The line continues to fly at 80% capacity,
serving a variety of business and tourist visitors to/from Israel.
The reasons for the "suspension" must be based on other considerations:
* Does American Airlines believe that continuing service to Israel will
adversely affect its business relationships with other middle-eastern
countries?
* Does "suspending" service to Israel permit American Airlines to abrogate
existing labor agreements between TWA's 100 employees in Israel, contrary to
all previous public announcements about protecting employee rights and
benefits?

FORWARDING an e-mail to friends, family or colleagues without permission
from the sender is illegal from today and could result in severe penalties.
New laws set out maximum penalties of five years' jail or fines of $60,000.
The illegality stems from breaching the copyright held by the person who
originally wrote the e-mail.
An estimated five million or more e-mails are forwarded each day around the
nation.
Attorney-General Daryl Williams QC has warned Australians that they could
be breaking the law, if they continue to forward e-mails from today.
"It's quite possible that the forwarding of an e-mail could be a technical
infringement of copyright," Mr Williams' legal adviser told The Sunday
Telegraph.
"E-mailing something is a `communication' under the Digital Agenda Act and
so is putting something up on a website."
The new measures cover material which already has copyright protection --
such as excerpts from books or song lyrics -- as well as personal
messages.
This means a simple message about office gossip, holiday plans or a new
romance carries personal copyright and the recipient has no right to forward
it without permission.
An e-mail sex scandal erupted in Britain last year when London lawyer
Bradley Chait forwarded a personal e-mail from his girlfriend, Claire Swire, to
six friends, who in turn forwarded the e-mail to others. The e-mail, which
described his sexual prowess, eventually made its way around the world and
led to the lawyer being severely disciplined by his employer.
Internet Industry Association executive director Peter Coroneos said
forwarding e-mail had probably always involved a technical breach of
copyright, adding: "It's a matter of whether the authors themselves are likely
to be concerned."
He urged people sending e-mail to spell out whether they gave permission for
the content to be forwarded to others.

An Egyptian study uncovered that the western wall of A1-Haram Al-Sharif is
the Buraq Wall, not the Wailing as the Jews allege to justify establishment
of their state in Palestine.
Contained in a book issued recently by the Ain Shams University's Middle
East Research Center, the study says 95% of Jews are not Israelites but
rather foreigners of mixed races as referred to by British anthropologist
James Fenton's 1966 paper.
It is illogical that there are any antiquities belonging to Prophets beneath
Al-Aqsa Mosque, said the study, noting that Al Aqsa Mosque was built 2,000
years before Prophet Solomon and remained so until this day.
Prophets act according to heavenly revelations and hence it is unacceptable
to claim that one Prophet had destroyed a place built by another before him
in order to build a temple.
Resolutions of the international Shaw Committee, issued in the aftermath of
the Buraq Intifada in 1928 under the Swedish Foreign Minister then, pointed
out that no traces of stones remaining from the Temple of Solomon were found
in the Western Wall.
Surprisingly enough, the Jews did not claim possession of this wall as all
that they demanded is the recognition of their rights to have access to the
wall to pray before it according to their rituals, added the study.

Pope to pray in mosque
The Pope is continuing his trip to the Holy Land John Paul II is to become
the first leader of the Catholic Church to set foot in a mosque when he visits
Syria in May, a church official said on Monday.
The Pope is hoping that by entering the Umayyed mosque in Damascus -
the site of the tomb of John the Baptist - he will underline his attempts to

Officials organising the Pope's itinerary, said it would be the first time that
Christians and Muslims would pray together in an organised way.
The Pope, 80, would lead the Christian side of the prayer and Syria's mufti,
Sheikh Ahmed Kataro, the Muslim side.
Footsteps of Paul
In 1986, Pope John Paul was the first Pontiff to enter a synagogue after he
visited one in Rome.
The mosque visit is scheduled for 6 May in the middle of the pope's three-
day pilgrimage to the Holy Lands, which has already taken him to Egypt,
Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories.
Besides Syria, Pope John Paul wants to visit Greece and Malta to follow in
the footsteps of the Apostle Paul, who was known as Saul of Tarsus before
he was converted on the road to Damascus.
The mosque, known as the Great Mosque of Damascus and one of Islam's
most celebrated shrines was once the site of an Aramaic temple.
Then, in the first century AD, a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter was built
on the site, before being converted into a church dedicated to Saint John the
Baptist.
Saint John is also venerated by Muslims as the prophet Yahya.

Strip not feasible now
A senior IDF source has said that there is no possibility
of withdrawing from so much as a centimeter in the Gaza
Strip at the present stage. He asserted that any
evacuation of settlements, even the most isolated, would
be interpreted by the Palestinians as a victory.=20
The source said that the IDF was working to widen the
margins of the settlement blocs in the Gaza Strip in order
to bolster settlers=92 security and send a message to the
Palestinians that violence on their part will yield only
losses.=20
The source predicted that the current confrontation is
likely to go on for some time. He added that the various
scenarios take into account the possibility that Palestinian
security forces will join the cycle of violence.=20

15:40) Police: Wakf damaged
remnants from Second Temple period
Unbeknownst to the police, the Wakf [Islamic religious
trust] damaged remnants on the Temple Mount during
the past month, according to a declaration given today to
the High Court of Justice by the police.=20
The damaged remnants are from the Second Temple
period.=20
The declaration came in response to a petition from the
Temple Mount Faithful to the High Court of Justice
requesting a halt to work being carried out by the Wakf
on the Temple Mount.=20
According to the Temple Mount Faithful, the Wakf has
been razing Jewish archeological sites in the walled
compound for more than five months.=20
Last month, the police claimed all work being carried out
on the Temple Mount has been authorized by the
political echelon.=20
Today, the police admitted to the High Court of Justice
they are trying to rebuild two rows of a wall from the
Second Temple period that the Wakf dismantled.=20
The court is to deliberate the case this coming Thursday,
Army Radio reported.

March 4: As Mofaz has emphasized, the spiraling terrorist blight is scaled up obliges the IDF to operate on a broader, more comprehensive scale. The Israel plan therefore calls for a tough response to escalating Palestinian terrorist activity but - at least until the Arab summit takes place in Amman on March 27, to try and refrain from stepping out of the existing boundaries between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
