Company working on allergen-free cat
Richard A. D'Errico The Business Review

A company creating an allergen-free kitty -- you read that correctly -- will
make a presentation to the Venture Bplan Series next week.

Transgenic Pets LLC of Syracuse is in the process of producing the world's
first allergen-free cat. The biotechnology company is headed by David Avner,
a
medical doctor.

The company has a patent pending with the U.S. Patent and Trade Office. In
announcing the Bplan Series held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, RPI
said Transgenic will "use this proprietary technology to allow millions of
consumers to enjoy the love and companionship of a pet without the cost,
inconvenience, risk and limited effectiveness of current allergy
treatments."

There are about 27.5 million Americans who are allergic to cats. The first
allergen-free cats will be available in 2003. Development of the
allergen-free cats is currently being done at the University of Connecticut,
under an agreement with Transgenic Pets.

The company is coming before the Venture Bplan Series on June 27 seeking
$700,000.

Avner said he started working on the allergen-free cats in 1995.

"Both my wife and I are allergic to cats," he said.

Researchers wary about bill to ban cloning
By KURT SAMSON, UP Medical Writer

WASHINGTON, June 19 (UPI) -- Although there is near unanimous support
for
a federal prohibition on humans, one proposal has biomedical researchers
worried that its reach could ban far more than a brave new world of designer
kids.

Two cloning bills have been introduced in the House of Representatives.
H.R. 1644, sponsored by Florida Rpublican Dave Weldon, would prohibit not
just the cloning of humans but any research using cloning technology,
including tissue and stem cell experiments. The other measure, H.R. 2172,
offered by Pennsylvania Republican Jim Greenwood, would amend the Food,
Drug and
Cosmetic Act to ban human cloning but would allow any other use of
somatic cell
transfer technology for research.

Speaking before the House Judiciary Committee's crime subcommittee
Tuesday, Dr. Thomas Okarma, president and CEO of Geron Corp., in Menlo
Park,
Calif., said allowing human cloning would be irresponsible and could lead to a
"backlash" against other forms of therapeutic cloning technology that could
lead
to cures for many diseases. Nonetheless, he said the broad biomedical ban
in the
Weldon proposal would accomplish the same backlash.

Okarma spoke on behalf of BIO, the Biotechnology Industry Association
based in Washington, D.C.

He said Geron is engaged in research to re-program cells; taking cells
from an individual and teasing them back to the embryonic stem cell state
where they can then be differentiated into other types of cells for
therapeutic purposes.

"This is precisely the research that would be banned by the Weldon bill,"
Okarma said. "Because the Weldon bill does not differentiate between
reproductive cloning and cloning for research purposes, it will cut off this
work and prevent its therapeutic applications from reaching patients.

"In contrast," he continued, "the bipartisan bill introduced by Rep.
Greenwood ... bans reproductive cloning but allows the continuation of
research."

The measure "strikes the appropriate balance" between prohibiting acts
that are unsafe and unethical while promoting vital medical research, Okarma
told the panel.

Addressing the legal aspects of the bills, Gerard Bradley, a law professor at
the University of Notre Dame, said the Weldon bill "is a proper exercise of
Congress's power over interstate commerce," and that it therefore it is both
constitutional and enforceable. Because cloning technology will require
interstate traffic for much of the raw materials and laboratory supplies,
Congress would have constitutional enforcement authority, he explained.

The Greenwood bill also would be a legitimate exercise of Congress's
power, but it "raises serious constitutional issues" and the prohibition
would be "unenforceable," he said.

"My judgment is that the only effective way to prohibit human reproductive
cloning is to prohibit all human cloning, as H.R. 1644 does," Bradley said.

Alexander Capron, commissioner of the National Bioethics Advisory
Commission and professor of law at the University of Southern California Law
Center in Los Angeles, told the subcommittee that a moratorium on human
cloning
would work better than an outright ban until more issues are resolved.

"It seems to me that the idea of a moratorium -- that is, a time-limited
ban -- can be usefully applied to the second activity addressed by H.R.
1644, namely, the creation of cloned embryos for research purposes," he
said.

"Producing normal human embryos through cloning is probably going to be a
challenge, but once such embryos are on hand, I believe it will be
impossible to prevent efforts to implant them and achieve a pregnancy behind
the
privacy veil of the physician-patient relationship," Capron told lawmakers.

British scientists urge world ban on reproductive cloning

LONDON, June 20 (AFP) -
Britain's most eminent scientific body said in a report on Wednesday that
there should be a worldwide moratorium on human reproductive cloning
because it
is "unethical, dangerous and irresponsible."

The Royal Society said therapeutic cloning, where tissue is cloned but never
allowed to develop into a foetus, should be encouraged, though it
acknowledged
this could lead on to reproductive cloning.

It published the report ahead of a two-day symposium in London Thursday
and
Friday when scientists from around the world will gather to discuss the future
of cloning.

Scientific research with human reproductive cloning risks creating
handicapped children, never reproduces the original exactly and is viewed
with unease by most members of the public, according to the report.

"The only way to reduce the chances of such experiments being carried out"
is to impose an international moratorium on human cloning, it said.

"We think that a ban on reproductive cloning would have public support and
is currently justified on scientific grounds," said Richard Gardiner, who
chaired the group which compiled the report.

"There has been a lot of unchallenged publicity this year for groups who
claim they will clone human beings in the next few years," he said.

"It is the Royal Society's view that this would be unethical and that
responsible scientists across the world should not ignore the public's
well-founded opposition to such research."

Therapeutic cloning can be used in life-saving treatments, for example to
"grow" replacement tissues like skin, bone and even whole organs.

Reproductive cloning involves taking cells from one organism and using to
make a complete copy of the original.

There are so far no known cases of human cloning having been carried out,
though several animals have been cloned and some scientists say they are
wor
king towards creating human clones.

The practise is technically legal in most countries, except France, Japan,
Britain and a handful of others.

Supporters say it could help infertile couples produce offspring or replace
children lost to illness or accidents.

But it is opposed by many religious groups and by people who fear human
cloning could be subject to abuse. They believe it could be used to create
"designer" babies or could have unseen consequences and spiral out of
control.

A Wake Up Call For The US?

We have many friends in the so-called West Bank, “Samaria and Judea”.
Seldom a day goes by that I don´t have a conversation with some of
them. What has become so very obvious over the past 8 months, is the
factor of fear has grown in them. Yesterday I talked to friends from
Shillo; they told me that they are not driving the roads with their
children for fear of them being killed by Palestinian snipers. Daily
now Jewish Settlers are being killed and laid on the altr of CNN and
BBC, with the blessing of our Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. These are
the Jews God brought back and gave the dream of Zionism. They believe
the Word of God and know that this is covenant land between them and God.
What they don´t and can´t understand is how such men have become their
leaders? Or for that matter how they were so deceived by these men
wondering if they are Jews themselves?

Slowly the Israeli public is waking up to the fact that the USA is and
has brokered deals that is forcing them to give the land God gave them.
Then to give the land to the enemies of God, the Islamic Devils. That
the Tenet and Mitchell reports, are both anti-Semitic. Both tell the
Jews to get off the Land God gave them. Both reports tell us that we
are not to have any natural growth or to build on this land.

The Word of God tells us in no uncertain terms that those who bless
Israel will be blessed, and those who curse Israel will be cursed. Gen.
12:3 The Word tell us that in dozens of other Scriptures as well. The
word also tells us that God will destroy all the nations that come up
against Jerusalem. Zech. 12:9.

Could it be that God is trying to wake up America, that He is trying
to warn them to not broker such deals for the Devil in Israel? Have we
become blind or can we see, the political, moral, ecological and the
economy in America is heading down hill. With adverse weather
everywhere, floods in one place, drought in another, Tornadoes and
destruction seemingly everywhere. With homosexuals standing behind
pulpits in many main line denominational churches. And you know the
rest of that list it goes on and on.

But as they say the straw that broke the camel´s back, is sending
these two men to Israel to force Israel to give away their land to the
enemies of God. You can be sure of one thing. God will not be mocked.
His Word will always prove to be truth and the correct way for man to
travel on.

There is about to be a terrible war in the Middle East and with Israel
right in the center of it. Once again God´s people will pay for the
sins and hatred of others. What will it take another holocaust to wake
the world up? I don´t think so, if the systematic murder of 6,000,000
of us didn´t do it, another holocaust won´t either. But that will not
prevent one from happening and right here in Israel. If that should
happen will the US then realize that the Mitchell and Tenet reports
had a role in it? And if so, what will that profit those Jews who will
die as a result of their action?

What is happening is spiritual, and this war is being fought in the
heavenly but being played out in the physical. For I can´t make myself
believe that any intelligent person thinks that Yasser Arafat is a
good man, no one could be that dumb. There is no one or no government
that really believes that Arafat has called a cease-fire. There is no
one who doesn´t believe that Arafat is a cold-blooded murderer. Once
again I could go on and on, but my point is this. Why then does all of
Europe back him, and not Israel? The answer is simple, “OIL”. The Arab
Countries have what they need and Israel doesn´t.

So the next question is obvious. Why then is the USA acting like they
back Israel, but then come around and make deals like the Tenet and
Mitchell reports? The answer is much more complicated, but the short
of it is. With the New World Order and the now operating world economy,
the US can not go against Europe and the rest of the world who so
desperately depend on Arab Oil. The US also has a population whom for
the most part still think they should back Israel. A large part of the
Senator´s and Congressmen/women were elected with that as part of
their platform. This puts a President in a precarious position, he
must seem to be doing the will of the people and not make enemies of
the rest of the world. But this can only be done to a certain point,
and then the truth will come out somewhere down the line. We also read
in Zech. 14:2 “For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to
battle”. But we should read on, :3 “Then shall the Lord go forth, and
fight against those nations, as he fought in the days of battle.

As I stated earlier, this is a spiritual battle, and a wake up call,
not only for the US but also for Believers everywhere. It´s praying
time, and way past time to get on your face before God, to repent
first of our own sins and selfishness, and to pray that God will make
in us His Will easy for others to see. That Yeshua will be seen in our
every conversation and act. If after doing that you have not wept you
need to go back, for your sin of self-righteousness is obvious. When
you have confessed your sins and received the needed forgiveness, then
go before the Altar of God standing there covered with the blood of
Yeshua, asking God to have mercy on your Country. Pray for the peace
of Jerusalem, and for this ministry, pray that God will do what so
ever He will with me. Pray for the Jewish Settlers in Samaria and
Judea. Then ask God to have His way in your life, and to show you the
way He´d have you go.

Shalom, jerry golden

Subject: [bprlist] Fruit with added fizz designed to tempt children
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Wed, 20 Jun 2001 08:36:57 -0400

June 17 2001 BRITAIN
Fruit with added fizz designed to tempt children
Jonathan Leake, Science Editor

BRITISH supermarkets are studying a technique to carbonate fruit and
market it to children as sparkling oranges, pineapples and pears.

It follows a scientific breakthrough that allows natural fruit to be filled with
carbon dioxide, making its flesh fizz like a bottle of carbonated drink. The
fizziness is also said to enhance the flavour, making oranges and other fruit
taste stronger and sweeter.

Supermarkets see it as a money-spinner; they hope it will make it easier to
sell fruit and even some vegetables to children who are notoriously reluctant
to eat fresh foods.

A spokesman for Asda, the British supermarket chain now controlled by Wal-
Mart, said it was taking a close look at fizzy fruit. "It is in its early stages,
but it sounds like fun, especially if it encourages children to eat more fresh
fruit."

Fizzy fruit was invented by Dr Galen Kaufman, an American researcher in
Galveston, Texas, who works on the behaviour of gases. He found that,
under certain conditions of temperature and pressure, carbon dioxide can
diffuse into almost any fruit - with the exception of bananas, which explode.

A series of consumer tests carried out at American supermarkets showed
that youngsters' attitude to fruit completely changed when they knew it was
fizzy - and many adults with an aversion to fresh food would also eat it.

For supermarkets, fizzy fruit could be a welcome antidote to the disaster
suffered by Sunny Delight, the orange-flavoured drink aimed at children. Its
sales soared after it was marketed as a health drink, and then plunged when
it emerged that chemicals used to colour it could turn children yellow, a
phenomenon now known as Sunny Delight syndrome.

Kaufman said fruit was best if carbonated shortly before consumption,
otherwise the gas could diffuse out again, although his firm FizzyFruit was
working on wrappers that could retain the gas for days.

He added: "Most carbonated fruit tastes great - grapes become a bit like
champagne and oranges and other fruit gets much tastier - but I have to
admit the tomatoes are a bit strange."

The link to Asda comes from Wal-Mart, its parent company, which is in talks
with Kaufman over marketing the product once trials are complete.

The idea of carbonating fruit to appeal to children is, however, a dubious one,
according to food psychologists. Dr Troy Cooper, an Open University
psychologist specialising in food, said the technique was effectively turning
fruit into packaging for a fizzy drink.

"Research shows that if you take a melon and fill it with fizzy drinks it will
not actually persuade children to eat more real fruit. So children might eat
this fruit and, if they retain their healthy properties, that is good - but it is
unlikely to make them eat ordinary fruit."

Tricks to encourage children to eat fresh food are not new. In 1997 the
supermarket chain Iceland introduced a range of "snack-flavoured"
vegetables. They included baked bean-flavoured peas and Brussels sprouts
tasting of bubble gum.

CABINET COMMUNIQUE Wednesday, June 20, 2001

(Communicated by the Cabinet Secretariat)
Jerusalem Wednesday, June 20, 2001
At the Diplomatic-Security Cabinet meeting today (Wednesday), 20.6.2001:

The Government of Israel has determined that the Palestinian Authority
has still not fulfilled its obligations specified in the Tenet document:
halting terrorism, arresting terrorists, stopping incitement and
preventing attacks. The PA bears full responsibility for terrorist
activities in its territory, as well as for the actions of terrorists
that originate in - and return to - its territories.

Despite the foregoing, Israel will continue its efforts to implement the
Tenet document.

Israel reserves the right of self-defense to prevent attacks aimed at
its citizens and soldiers.

A plan for the redeplyment of IDF troops will be presented at the
security meeting but it will be made clear that its implementation will
only take place after the cessation of terrorist attacks.

Steps are being taken - and will be taken - to improve the level of
protection in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. Finance Minister Silvan Shalom
briefed the Diplomatic-Security Cabinet regarding the order he signed on
this issue.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ‹ Getting fuel to soldiers in the field has been a
problem since machines replaced horses.

But according to a new report, by 2025 soldiers could make fuel and
electricity where they are, instead of relying on long supply chains to
transport energy to them.

"Opportunities in Biotechnology for Future Army Applications," a report
released today (Wednesday, 6/20) by the National Research Council's Board
on
Army Science and Technology, says future U.S. Army operations in the field
could rely on alternative fuels and biological methods to produce
electricity through photosynthesis.

The report was prepared by a 16-member committee of university and
industry
scientists. Purdue University's Michael Ladisch, distinguished professor of
agricultural and biological engineering and distinguished professor of
biomedical engineering, chaired the NRC committee.

One of the most well-known examples of a military energy crisis occurred
near the end of World War II. As U.S. Gen. George Patton raced through
France, he quickly outran his supply lines and the ability to refuel his
trucks and tanks.

On Aug. 28, 1944, Patton declared, "At the present time our chief difficulty
is not the Germans, but gasoline. If they would give me enough gas, I could
go all the way to Berlin!"

Three days later, despite the efforts of the famed Red Ball Express, a
convoy of trucks hurrying fuel to Patton's army, he and his men were
stranded dry. The chance to sweep through France into Germany soon
passed.

Robert Love, study director for the National Research Council, says such
situations could be avoided in the future by employing alternative fuels
made from natural and renewable resources.

"The real issues for the Army are the ability to simplify logistics
requirements, to remain flexible with battlefield fuels, and to capitalize
on alternative fuels, such as methane, instead of restricting ourselves to
fossil fuels," he says. "With fossil fuels, logistics can become difficult
because you have to have this long supply chain."

Although using non-petroleum sources of energy would have obvious
environmental and social benefits, Love says this didn't factor into the
committee's considerations.

"Obviously there are always spin-offs of military innovation, but the
committee was concerned with what would improve the operations of the
Army."

Scientists are already working on making fuel from waste plant materials
such as cellulose and hemicellulose. Grasses, surplus grains, spoiled food,
food wrappers, paper or even cotton cloth could be converted into fuel using
this method.

"In theory, these materials could be produced in the field (if the theater
of operation were in a temperate zone) and used as fuels," the report
states.

"The Army needs to be investigating surrogate fuels, such as ethanol and
biodiesel, and make sure their engines can run on a variety of fuels,"
Ladisch says. "Actually, I think this can be done with a minimal amount of
modification. They're in pretty good shape in this area."

Another energy need for modern soldiers in the field is electricity, and
batteries are bulky and very heavy. Biological systems may provide a
solution, the NRC committee suggests.

"Right now the Army is dependent on batteries, and they can't take seriously
other energy sources such as solar power," Love says. "One of the things the
report investigated was photovoltaic energy, and how bioelectronics might
make it possible to increase the efficiency of converting sunlight to usable
energy. If you put this together with fuel-cell storage techniques, this
would have a large impact on how the military operates, especially for small
unit operations."

The NRC recommends that the Army investigate how plants convert photons
to
energy because plants are so good at grabbing energy from the natural
environment. Millions of years of natural selection has optimized plants to
the particular wavelengths of sunlight, and because of this, plants convert
98 percent of the sunlight they receive into energy.

Conversely, current solar energy systems are only 10 percent to 15 percent
efficient.

Using plants to produce electricity is an area of research known as
biological photovoltaics. The NRC report suggests that coupling the
light-harvesting capabilities of plants with protein-based devices could
lead to solar energy systems capable of converting solar energy at 40
percent to 50 percent efficiency.

The report's authors also envision protein-based photovoltaic coatings on
the Kelvar military helmets that could produce enough energy for the
soldier's electronics. Other equipment and vehicles could also be covered
with these protein-based solar converters.

A side benefit of such technology, the report notes, is that the protein
coatings would make whatever they coat more difficult to detect by
electronic means since they would mimic the natural environment.

The NRC report was supported by the U.S. Army. The National Research
Council
provides information to the government, the public, and the scientific and
engineering communities on behalf of the National Academy of Sciences, the
National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine.

MILITARY FOODS COULD ENHANCE SOLDIERS' PERFORMANCE BY

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ‹ As Napoleon Bonaparte was preparing to invade
Russia in
1809, one of his largest obstacles wasn't firepower or fortifications, but food.

His challenge to find a method to keep food fresh and transportable gave
rise to the famous dictum, "An army travels on its stomach" ‹ and to the
technology of the tin can.

Today's modern army is just as concerned about feeding the troops as
Napoleon was two centuries ago. But the U.S. soldiers of 2025 will be eating
foods that are a combination of hometown comfort and space-age wizardry.

"Opportunities in Biotechnology for Future Army Applications," a report
released today (Wednesday, 6/20) by the National Research Council's Board
on
Army Science and Technology, lays out a vision of foods and agricultural
activities that will keep future warriors fed, disease-free and even safe from
friendly fire.

The report was prepared by a 16-member committee of university and
industry
scientists. Purdue University's Michael Ladisch, distinguished professor of
agricultural and biological engineering and distinguished professor of
biomedical engineering, chaired the NRC committee.

The committee's report states that genetically engineered foods could play a
major role in reshaping how the U.S. Army feeds its troops.

"Biotechnology and biological materials have potential to greatly improve
the logistical support of the Army," Ladisch says. "Genetically engineered
foods have a role to play, not only through functional foods, but also
through foods that can grow quickly."

One example mentioned in the report is the creation of plants that could
grow in days instead of weeks, foods that are already being developed for
use on space missions to Mars.

"These plants may not be used to create gourmet meals, but these could be
critical in a survival situation," Ladisch says.

One of the most serious problems in combat is the potential for what the
military calls unintentional fratricide, and is known to the public as
friendly fire casualties: confused troops firing on their own comrades.

The NRC report recommends that soldiers' food could contain edible
compounds, called biomarkers, that would be used to identify U.S. soldiers
in combat or in peacekeeping actions. The report states: "The presence of
particular biological organisms or attributes could be used to help
identify, trace or track individuals."

Tagging soldiers through their food could allow them to be tracked on the
ground or even via remote sensing satellites. The report notes that being
able to accurately distinguish between friendly forces and units could
significantly improve the Army's command and control.

The report also suggests making foods more digestible by including edible
enzymes. "More efficiently digested foods would mean that more calories
could be transported to troops for the same amount of weight," the report
states.

Robert Love, director of the NRC study, says that food is a major logistics
consideration on the battlefield.

"The Army is always concerned about logistics because it translates into
being more effective in combat with fewer resources," he says. "A lot of the
advances in biotechnology are going to have the effect of making things
smaller
and lighter, and that includes the food that a soldier eats."

Another important area of inquiry for military research is in functional
foods, which are foods that can deliver extra nutrients or other healthful
ingredients.

Since antiquity, as many soldiers have died from disease as have perished in
combat. The NRC report suggests that edible vaccines, which are currently
being
developed, could also be used by soldiers in the field to fend off common
ailments or diarrhea caused by intestinal viruses.

A common, serious problem for combat soldiers is dysentery, which is an
irritation of the colon that can be caused by chemicals, bacteria, protozoa or
intestinal worms. Dysentery could also be lessened through functional foods
containing specialized components, the report states.

Field rations would also contain antimicrobial factors that would reduce or
eliminate the need to send power refrigeration equipment into the field, or
could be used to fend off common diseases that soldiers might be exposed
to. The
report suggests that such anti-infection agents would be made from edible
proteins or peptides instead of pharmaceuticals.

Even a soldier's comfort would be increased by the food they eat: The report
envisions candy bars with specialized nutrients that could elevate body
temperatures in cold weather or reduce susceptibility to detection by enemy
sensors.

"There is a great deal that can be done with foods through biotechnology to
enhance a soldier's performance on the battlefield," Love says.

Council

Bible had role in exposing gays to hatred

The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission has ruled that an advertisement,
above, placed by Regina resident Hugh Owens in the Saskatoon StarPhoenix
exposed gay men to hatred.

The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission has ruled that a newspaper ad with
references to Biblical passages exposed gay men to hatred.

The advertisement, placed by Regina resident Hugh Owens in the Saskatoon
StarPhoenix, features an icon of two stick figures holding hands. The figures
are covered by a red circle and slash, and are accompanied by four references
to the Bible.

The slashed figures alone are not enough to communicate hatred, said the
ruling. But the addition of the Biblical references are more dangerous.

One biblical reference from Leviticus says a man who "lies with a man" must be
put to death.

"It is obvious that certain of the Biblical quotations suggest more dire
consequences and there can be no question that the advertisement can
objectively be seen as exposing homosexuals to hatred or ridicule," said the
ruling by lawyer Valerie Watson.

The human rights commission ordered both the newspaper and Mr. Owens to pay
the three complainants $1,500 each. But earlier, it declined to investigate
similar complaints about another ad from Mr. Owens in the Regina Leader-Post.
That ad featured the entire Bible passages, but not the anti-gay symbol.

The decision has raised questions about freedom of speech, and whether some
quotations from the Bible can promote hatred.

"There's no question that the board has ruled that the Bible was an essential
part of this," said Grant Currie, a lawyer for the StarPhoenix.

Mr. Currie had argued to the commission that a ruling against the newspaper
would limit the scope of debate in forums such as classrooms, church sermons
and the media. Yesterday, he added that he expects this decision will be cited
many times in future decisions.

During the hearing over the StarPhoenix advertisement, the commission heard
that gay men felt belittled and subject to hatred because of the ad. "It says
someone is using their interpretation of the Bible to direct hatred towards
me," said Gens Hellquist, one of three gay complainant.

Mr. Owens, who paid $1,700 for the strip ad, argued yesterday that he wasn't
saying that individuals should put homosexuals to death.

"This is based on God's law. We don't have God's law entrenched in our
Criminal Code. Adultery is punishable by death according to God's law. But we
don't do that, " said Mr. Owens, who said he plans to appeal the ruling as a
threat to religious freedom and freedom of speech.

Roger Hutchinson, a professor of ethics at the University of Toronto's United
Church theological college, said the Bible is a multi-faceted set of stories
that are open to interpretation.

"You can read in the Bible that you should sell everything you own or you
won't get into heaven," he said. "You don't find people condemning
homosexuality selling everything they own."

Denominations that support gay and lesbian rights don't feel bound by those
passages in the bible, he said. "It's not the use of the Bible. It's the
inciting of negative feelings," he said.

StarPhoenix publisher Lyle Sinkewicz said he sees the case as a freedom of
speech issue.

"What we have here are two conflicting rights, both protected under the
Charter of Rights," he said.

He doesn't plan to appeal. "I wouldn't do it again, that's for sure," he said.

Mr. Currie said even if the StarPhoenix doesn't appeal, he believes another
media organization will eventually challenge it.

"Freedom of expression is for the public, not the media," he said.

DM BEN-ELIEZER MEETS CHIEF OF STAFF OF JAPAN GROUND SELF
DEFENCE FORCE
Wednesday, June 20, 2001
(Communicated by the Defense Minister's Media Adviser)

Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer met Today (Wednesday), 20.6.2001,
in Jerusalem, with the Chief of Staff of the Japan Ground Self Defense
Force, General Nakatani. Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer briefed General
Nakatani on the regional situation and said that Israel is engaged in a
war against terror that needs to be fought with both conventional and
sophisticated means. The Defence Minister also said that Israel is doing
everything in its power to end the violence and return to the
negotiating table. The Defence Minister detailed both the regional and
global dangers posed by Islamic extremists with an emphasis on the
non-conventional warfare infrastructure being developed in Iran. "That
is one of the most serious threats facing the western world", said the
Defence Minister.

General Nakatani said that Japan appreciates Israel's efforts to
stabilize the region, and Japan is also concerned by the proliferation
of non-conventional weapons. General Nakatani stated that his country
is today prepared to make a larger effort than in the past to eradicate
world terror, and therefore, must enhance its cooperation with Israel in
this field.

Killers of Greek monk captured - members of Arafat's Force 17
By Amos Harel, Ha'aretz Correspondent Ha'aretz bulletin 20 June 2001

The Shin Bet security service and a special unit of the Jerusalem police
managed Wednesday to track down the killers of Georgios Tsibukakis, the
Greek monk who was shot dead while driving along the Jerusalem-Ma'ale
Adumim
road last week.

The two alledged killers were members of Palestinian Authority Chairman
Yasser Arafat's Force 17. According to them, they had approached Tanzim
head
Marwan Barghouti and had asked him for weapons to carry out attacks
against
Israel. Barghouti in turn referred them to a different person, who sold them the
weapons. Both men are residents of East Jerusalem.
