“The Accused.” The show will focus on the massacres in the Beirut
refugee camps Sabra and Shatilla in 1982. Panorama touts itself BBC´s
“flagship television current affairs programme.”

BBC: “Nearly 20 years ago the man who is now Israel's Prime Minister,
Ariel Sharon, sent Lebanese militiamen into the Palestine refugee

800 people lay dead after a rampage of murder, torture and rape. The
massacre provoked international outrage. [Sharon] has maintained that
he could not have foreseen the danger of a massacre in the camps.
Fergal Keane investigates this claim, and talks to key witnesses and
survivors of the massacre. In the light of developments in international
war crimes prosecutions the programme asks whether the evidence
should lead to indictments for what happened in the camps.”

I wish to protest BBC´s campaign to accuse Israel´s Prime Minister Sharon
for responsibility for the Sabra and Shatilla massacres.
- An exhaustive Israeli commission found that Sharon bore no direct
responsibility for the actions of Christian militiamen.
- At the time, Israeli political and military leaders, including
Sharon, reiterated on numerous occasions to the leaders of the
Christian forces the necessity to avoid civilian casualties.
- The commander of Christian forces who carried out the Sabra and
Shatilla massacre was a Lebanese named Elie Hobeika. According to the
book, “From Israel to Damascus,” written by Hobeika´s bodyguard
Robert Maroun Hatem, Hobeika was a Syrian double agent, and the
massacre was aimed at discrediting Israel and Ariel Sharon. Hobeika
and other Lebanese perpetrators were never brought to trial. [Details

respectfully suggest that instead, Panorama should focus its cameras
on the contemporary criminal Yasir Arafat.
- Arafat is an unrepentant terrorist, who has directed some of the
worst and bloodiest acts of terror over the last 30 years, up to
today.
- Arafat´s corruption is legendary. His private holdings are reported
to run into billions of pounds/dollars. After wreaking havoc on
Jordan and Lebanon, Arafat and his Tunis cronies are undermining
local Palestinian societies and democratic development in Gaza and
the West Bank.
- Arafat was responsible for the turmoil in Lebanon in 1982 that led
to Israel´s attack at terrorist bases.
- Today, Arafat is responsible for the bloodshed and violence that he
unleashed after rejecting Israel´s far-reaching offers for peace.
Finally, I question BBC´s choice of veteran correspondent Fergal
Keane to present the show. Keane has little Middle East experience.
His award-winning reports have come from Asia and South Africa where
he reported on atrocities such as the genocidal massacres in Rwanda.
Assigning “The Accused” to Keane indicates where BBC wanted to go
with the story.

Scientists Alter Algae to Grow Without Sunlight
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists said on Thursday they had genetically
engineered a type of algae to grow without sunlight, a breakthrough that
could cut the cost of growing the single-celled plant used in dietary
supplements.
The addition of a single gene caused the algae to give up sunlight as its
primary energy source -- a process known as photosynthesis -- and use
glucose, a sugar, instead, researchers said in a study appearing in the
journal Science.
Commercial cultivation of algae is typically done in large outdoor ponds,
where contamination by microbes and variations in sunlight and temperature
can reduce the quality and quantity of the plants, the scientists said.
``Eliminating contamination means that the algae can be produced at a high
purity for pharmaceutical applications or dietary supplements,'' said study
co-author Kirk Apt of Martek Biosciences Corp. .
In addition to dietary supplements such as beta-carotene and the fatty acid
DHA,
algae is used in fluorescent pigments for scientific labeling and in food for
commercial fish farms.
The scientists said they also found that the gene-altered algae grew at 15
times the density of sunlight-grown algae, partly because the algae in
outdoor ponds can shade each other, restricting the available light.
To get the algae called Phaeodactylum tricornutum to feed off glucose or
another carbon compound instead of sunlight, a single gene from either
human red
blood cells or another type of algae was inserted, they said.
These so-called glucose transporter genes changed the metabolism of the
algae into glucose eaters, allowing them to grow in darkness.
The scientists said future efforts to change the metabolism of plants
through genetic engineering likely would be more complicated than just
adding a single gene.
P. tricornutum was primed for the change because it has the complete
cellular pathway for breaking down glucose ''preinstalled'' and the
additional gene simply allowed the plant to take advantage of its own
biology, they said.

China, Russia, Other Asian Countries Form New Bloc
SHANGHAI, China (AP) - The leaders of six nations led by
China and Russia signed an agreement Friday aimed at
promoting trade and combating Islamic militancy.
They hailed it as a step toward building a new economic and
security bloc in central Asia. But after two days of talks
in Shanghai, questions remained about their ability to
effectively counter U.S. and European influence in the
region.
Friday's agreement called for more open trade and investment
and stronger security ties between the six members of the
new regional group, to be called the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization.
The new group will replace the Shanghai Five, a loosely knit
forum created in 1996 to resolve border disputes and fight
rising Islamic militancy. On Thursday, the leaders announced
that Uzbekistan had joined as a sixth member.
The group also includes the central Asian republics of
Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
Joint efforts against separatist groups remained at the
center of Friday's agreement. Central Asian governments,
including China, are grappling with religious rebel groups,
many receiving arms and training from the Taliban,
Afghanistan's extremist Islamic rulers.
"The cradle of terrorism, separatism and extremism is the
instability in Afghanistan," President Nursultan Nazarbayev
of Kazakstan warned in a speech during the signing ceremony.
In a joint statement Friday, the leaders said they discussed
setting up an anti-terrorism center agreed upon last year.
Beijing and Moscow view the Shanghai Cooperation
Organization as a way to offset growing U.S. and European
investment in the region. Russia in particular hopes to
regain more influence over central Asian republics that
became independent with the 1991 Soviet collapse.
Russia and China are also united in unease over what they
see as America's dominance of world affairs and Washington's
plans to build a missile defense shield.
Defense ministers from the six nations meeting Friday on the
sidelines of the summit said the U.S. missile system would
have "a negative impact on world security," Vice Foreign
Minister Zhang Deguang told reporters.
Zhang stressed the peaceful intent of the new regional group
in promoting economic cooperation, exploitation of natural
resources and countering religious separatism.
"It's not a military alliance, as in the Cold War," Zhang
said.
After signing the joint agreement on Friday, Chinese
President Jiang Zemin heralded creation of a "brand new
multilateral cooperation organization on the Eurasian
continent," that would foster "world multi-polarization."
Russian President Vladimir Putin called stronger economic
ties a key aim. "Cooperation in the economics, trade and
culture is far more important than military cooperation," he
said.
The leaders called for joint efforts to exploit the region's
large reserves of oil, natural gas and minerals. China is
keen to gain access to new energy sources for its expanding
economy.
Economic ties between the members remain tenuous.
Trade between China and Russia totals about $8 billion a
year, less than a tenth of China's trade with the United
States. China depends on exports for its rising incomes and
living standards.
Russia is also closely bound to the West, especially
Germany, for the investment it desperately needs to revive
its faltering economy.
Central Asia's republics are wary of handing too much
influence to Russia and China, which for centuries have
competed for power in the region.
Islamic militants have seized on these anxieties in their
bid to establish religious regimes. Muslim separatists in
Chechnya have waged a bloody guerrilla war to drive out the
Russians.
Beijing's biggest internal threat comes from Muslim
separatists opposed to China's rule of its westernmost
region of Xinjiang. Militant Uighurs, ethnically related to
Turkic groups dominant in much of Central Asia, have waged a
campaign there of bombings and assassinations.

"There is no ceasefire." So did an Army Radio reporter sum up the
situation last night, in light of the non-stop Palestinian violence and
attacks against Israeli targets ever since the agreement brokered by CIA
director George Tenet went into effect Wednesday afternoon. In Shechem
this afternoon, 1,500 Arabs stormed Joseph's Tomb and yelled slogans
against the ceasefire agreement. Near Halhoul in the Hevron area this
afternoon, hundreds of Arabs marching with PA flags began stoning Israeli
cars, including an ambulance. Kol Rina News Agency reports that soldiers
arrived and dispersed the rioters by shooting in the air.
The Aboud bypass road near N'vei Tzuf, in central Binyamin north of
Ramallah, was again the site of a serious Palestinian shooting incident
last night. Three residents of N'vei Tzuf were hurt - two with
moderate-to-serious wounds - as they were returning home. Arab terrorists
have
perpetrated many similar ambush shootings in the same area in the past few
weeks, killing Lt. Ya'ir Nebentzal and wounding several others. Hundreds of
N'vei Tzuf residents demonstrated this morning at the site of last night's
shooting, demanding better security. O.C. Central Command Maj.-Gen.
Yitzchak
Eitan, who arrived on the scene, told them that beginning tomorrow night they
would be permitted to travel only in pairs of cars.
Other Palestinian "ceasefire" attacks yesterday and last night included a
mortar rocket attack against Morag (southern Gaza); Arafat's Fatah claimed
responsibility for the five shells that were launched. In addition, hundreds of
Arabs rioted against IDF forces, hurling rocks and trying to tear down the area
security fences. Soldiers were forced to used live fire to disperse the
rioters. An IDF position near Ganei Tal in Gush Katif (Gaza) was attacked
several times by gunfire last night. This morning, Arabs in Hevron threw 15
firebombs at an IDF position; no one was hurt, and soldiers did not return fire,
in accordance with the new strict open-fire regulations. These stipulate that
soldiers must not return fire under any circumstances unless live fire is being
shot at them at that moment.
An Arab resident of the Hevron area was killed late Wednesday night in a
drive-by shooting attack in the Mishor Adumim-Anatot area. Although a
group calling itself the Shalhevet Gilad Brigade claimed responsibility,
ostensibly in revenge for the murders of Shalhevet Pass and Gilad Zar,
military sources expressed "skepticism" that such a group actually
exists. IDF IDF Yesha Commander Brig.-Gen. Benny Gantz stated that
preliminary findings indicated that Arabs perpetrated the attack, believing they
were firing on Jews - just as occurred the night before, when Palestinian
terrorists mistakenly murdered a Greek monk. Police continue to investigate.
Despite the continued Palestinian attacks throughout Judea, Samaria, and
Gaza, senior IDF officers will meet today with their PA counterparts to
discuss how to "continue" implementing the "cease-fire." Itim News Agency
quoted a security source to the effect that further relaxations of security
measures will be taken on behalf of the Palestinian population. Israel intends
to open additional roads in Judea, Samaria, and Gaza, and plans to open the
Rafiach crossing in southern Gaza this Sunday.
2. OFFICIAL P.A. INCITEMENT AGAINST YESHA JEWS
At least one more of Israel's demands during the past eight years - and
specifically during the recent negotiations under the auspices of CIA
director George Tenet - does not appear to be being fulfilled: the demand that
the PA cut down on its official incitement against Israelis. None other than
PA
Information Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo called on Palestinians this morning
to
"teach the settlers the lesson they deserve." Speaking with Voice of
Palestine
Radio, Abed Rabbo said that there exists a "terrorist organization of settlers,
which is an arm of the extremist forces in Israel and the backbone of the
Sharon
government… They must be taught a lesson. They commit crimes
everywhere…" The
Yesha Council, contacted by Ynet for a response, said, "This lowly murderer
is
not worthy of a response. It is too bad that the government is willing to
invest more Jewish blood in its attempts to placate Arafat and his allies."
3. MACCABIAH IS ON!
The Maccabiah Games will be held, it was decided today. The opening of the
Games a month from now had been in doubt after several delegations of
Jewish
athletes from around the world said they would not come, but the American
Maccabiah delegation's decision yesterday to show up changed the picture.
Officials now expect 2,000 or more athletes to show up for the games; 4,000
had
originally been expected.
4. FAXING FOR POLLARD AND JOSEPH'S TOMB
Two recently launched campaigns are worthy of note: Women in Green is
calling for Prime Minister Sharon to insist on an Israeli return to
Joseph's Tomb in Shechem, in the framework of the current ceasefire
agreement calling for a return to pre-Sept. 28 lines. MK Benny Elon said
that the Shalom al Yisrael synagogue in Jericho should also be noted in
this connection. In addition, the newly-formed Committee to Bring Jonathan
[Pollard] Home is sponsoring a Saturday night candle-and-torchlight vigil at
Paris Square, near the Prime Minister's official residence, beginning tomorrow
night at 10:00 PM and every week thereafter. Sharon may be faxed at (+972-

5. YATOM APPOINTMENT BLOCKED - FOR NOW
The Supreme Court has issued a restraining order against the appointment of
former GSS officer Ehud Yatom as head of the Prime Minister's Anti-
Terrorism
Task Force. Meretz MKs Yossi Sarid and Mosi Raz had appealed against
the
appointment, saying that Yatom's involvement in the deaths of two captured
terrorists in the 1984 "Bus 300" incident disqualified him for the post.
Yatom's defenders say that Yatom was not only been granted a pardon for
his
actions, but had been promised at the time that "no harm would come to him
as a
result." They say that the Court's decision today is an unfair retraction of
that promise. In addition, said his one-time attorney Dov Weisglass, Yatom
was
following orders from his superiors in the GSS at the time, and common
practice
in Israel is that orders that are not clearly illegal or immoral - i.e., they
have no "black flag waving over it" - must be followed. Today's ruling by
Supreme Court justice Dalia Dorner freezes Yatom's appointment, but allows
him
to continue official preparations for his assumption of the post.
6. EXODUS TO JORDAN
Over 100,000 Arabs have left Yesha in the past nine months, the large
majority of them to Jordan. As a result, it has been reported that Jordan has
closed its borders to Palestinians from Judea, Samaria, and Gaza - but
Jordan
denies this. Some 200 Arabs were delayed on their way into Jordan from
Israel
yesterday, and in fact aides to King Abdullah say they do not want a repeat
of
1948, when 250,000 Arabs from Yesha entered Jordan.
In addition, Jordan is not allowing Hamas spokesman Ibrahim Roshe to enter
the
country. He was expelled from Jordan almost two years ago, and now his
second-choice country, Qatar, also no longer wants him.
7. TEN-DAY BOYCOTT OF THE NY TIMES
Angered by what he sees as persistent bias against Israel in The New York
Times´ coverage of the 9-month-old intifada, Rabbi Haskell Lookstein of New
York's Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun is urging a limited ten-day boycott of
the
paper. Rabbi Lookstein has asked Jews to cancel their subscriptions and
not buy
the paper during the ten days from Rosh HaShanah until Yom Kippur (Sept.
18-27).
This period is symbolic both for its "introspective" nature and in its marking
the first anniversary of the beginning of the Rosh HaShanah Arab Assault
against
Israel.
Jonathan Mark writes in the Jewish Week that Rabbi Lookstein noted several
glaring aspects of the Times' coverage of the current war and related items.
These include the paper's "generous acceptance" of the Palestinian view of
the
situation (blaming Ariel Sharon´s Temple Mount walk for the violence, blaming
the settlements for the crisis in spite of Israel´s offer at Camp David, and
creating a moral equivalence between the murdered Israelis and the
Palestinians
killed in the midst of attacking Israelis); a photograph of 30 anti-Israel
protestors on the day of the Salute to Israel parade - and no photos at all of
the over 100,000 pro-Israel participants; a "correction" of the report on the
terrorist murder of Sarah Blaustein in which the paper wrote that she had
"immigrated not to Israel but to the West Bank;" and more.
8. CHABAD'S CHERNOBYL CHILDREN: NOW UP TO 2,100
Twenty 7-12-year-olds from the areas most contaminated by the Chernobyl
nuclear disaster in Ukraine and Belarus in 1986 landed at Ben Gurion
International Airport this morning. Their trip and stay in Israel is
sponsored by Chabad´s Children of Chernobyl program. The organizers say
that the children's parents, while alert to the ongoing Palestinian
terrorism against Israel, are more concerned about the ongoing devastating
medical affects of radiation. The Chabad group has airlifted some 2,100
children to Israel over the years, providing medical care and education until
the youngsters are joined by their parents.
9. WHO'S COMING TO ISRAEL
Some 1,000 youngsters from England are expected to come to Israel this
summer as part of the Jewish Agency's Israel Experience program. The
world
Betar movement announced that it intends to send, as planned, more than
100
teenagers and youth leaders from its France chapter in the same framework.
Some 300 children will be visiting Israel this summer under the auspice of
United Synagogue Youth. In addition, the Ramah Camps are sending about
225
youngsters.
Some 250 Jewish students from all over the former Soviet Union will begin an
educational visit to Israel - their first trip to Israel - through the
Birthright project, with Jewish Agency assistance, this week. The same
number
is expected in coming weeks.

Castro Leads Pro-Palestinian Rally in Cuba
President Fidel Castro led thousands of Cubans in a political rally late on
Thursday to express support for Palestinians and condemn alleged Israeli
"genocide" in the Middle East conflict.
Culminating a week of official acts of solidarity with Palestinians, Castro and
other senior communist leaders sat at the front of the demonstration at the
"anti-imperialist" square opposite the U.S. diplomatic mission in Havana.
"We want to demand the end of the genocide against our brother Arab
nation," one student orator, Dayron Roque Lazo, told the 10,000-strong
crowd. "Long live the heroic Palestinian people! Long live the Arab peoples
who fight against imperialism! Socialism or Death!"
Cuba broke relations with Israel in the early 1970s and has been a staunch
supporter of the Palestine Liberation Organization's fight for an independent
state.
At Thursday's rally, speakers alternated with singers, poets and pantomime
artists acting out scenes of violence in the Middle East. Most of the
speakers also condemned Cuba's political archfoe, the United States, for its
backing of Israel.
The state-organized demonstration followed a week of pro- Palestinian
activities in Cuba, including a two-day U.N.- organized regional forum on the
Middle East question, and a round-table discussion on state television also
attended by Castro. Ha'aretz
Russia Markets Missle Shield System to Mideast
Russia is marketing what defense officials describe as a missile shield and
based on the S-300 anti-aircraft system. The system is termed the S-300V
and officials said it can protect military facilities and troops against ballistic
missiles better than the U.S. Patriot batteries. The officials have been
promoting the system in such countries as Egypt, Iran and Syria.
Officials said both Egypt and Iran are interested in purchasing the system as
part of efforts to establish a missile shield. The issue was discussed
between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Russian President Vladimir
Putin last month in Moscow.
Russia is also offering to develop a missile defense system for India. Officials
said a full proposal would be issued over the next few weeks. "This is a large
and very complicated project," Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov
said.
Russian analysts said Moscow does not have a missile defense system to
sell. They said Moscow is expected to offer a network of such systems as
the mobile S-300 and the short-range Tor M1 to stop incoming ballistic
missiles.
Moscow has been heavily promoting various models of the S-300. Officials
said the first such anti-aircraft systems are expected to be deployed in
Armenia by Sept. 1 near the Turkish border. MENL
Syria Said To Begin Redeployment in Lebanon
Syria is said to have begun redeployment of its troops in Lebanon. The
Lebanese army said on Thursday that the Syrian redeployment would take
place in the Beirut area. A military statement did not say whether Damascus
would actually reduce the 30,000 troops in Lebanon.
It was the first time that Beirut or Damascus announced a Syrian military
redeployment. The announcement came as United Nations secretary-general
Kofi Annan was to meet Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus.
Annan was said to have urged Assad to support UN peacekeeping efforts in
southern Lebanon along the Israeli border. Syria has allowed the Iranian-
backed Hizbullah to deploy troops and rockets near the Israeli border.
Lebanese military sources said Syrian troops would leave Christian areas
around Beirut, including that of the presidential palace.
Annan also discussed the Mitchell Commission recommendations on ending
the war between Israel and the Palestinians. "He [Assad] did support it in
that broad context, yes, but he did not want it to be seen as if the Mitchell
proposals are replacing the [UN Security Council] resolutions," Annan said.
Assad reiterated that "Syria's stable position concerning the peace process,
[is] based on the resolutions of the United Nations and on international
principle," the official SANA news agency quoted the Syrian president as
saying. "Any measure that is taken that does not convince Arab public
opinion will complicate the situation in the region." MENL
Canada Woos Gulf Arab States
Canada joins the list of Western nations that are wooing Gulf Arab nations
with advanced weaponry and technology. One aim is for Canada to sell naval
platforms or subsystems to the United Arab Emirates. The UAE plans to
build 12 naval frigates .
Canada has sent a Halifax-class frigate, the HMCS Winnipeg, to Abu Dhabi
as part of a demonstration of goodwill and military capability by Ottawa. The
warship arrived on Monday and is scheduled to depart over the weekend.
Canada provides training and some technology to the UAE and several other
Gulf Cooperation Council states. The main suppliers of Gulf countries,
however, are the United States, Britain and France.
"Canada is negotiating to be involved in providing sophisticated integration
systems and software for the frigates which the UAE Navy will be building,"
Canadian ambassador to the UAE, Christopher Thomson, said. "A number of
other initiatives are also being looked into."
The frigate, commissioned in 1995, is part of the United Nations force that
patrols the Persian Gulf to prevent the smuggling of oil out of Iraq. The UN is
authorized to supervise Iraqi oil exports and control revenue from sales.

Middle East Conflict Revives U.S. Arms Sales
The Middle East will continue to resist efforts to establish arms control as
weapons purchases by leading nations in the region have accelerated, a new
report says.
The report said Middle East arms purchases are also expected to revive the
sagging arms market and improve U.S. exports. Total world military
expenditure in 2000 amounted to about $798 billion, an increase of 2.3
percent.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute said in its latest report
that the arms race in the Middle East and Asia have led to a rise in world
military expenditures. The spending has been on the rise since 1998, when it
was at the lowest level of the post-Cold War period. more @ MENL
U.S. Launches Mobile Laser Project With Israel
The Pentagon has launched development of a mobile laser weapon in a joint
project with Israel. The project calls for both countries to help develop a
mobile tactical high energy laser for the ground forces. Eventually, officials
said, the laser might be outfitted on to a helicopter or airplane.
A contract has been signed by the U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense
Command, Huntsville, Ala. and Israel's Defence Ministry to develop a
prototype suitable for both countries. Israel and the United States have
already developed and successfully tested a stationary laser, or THEL.
The project will be again be led by TRW Inc., based in Redondo Beach,
Calif., which was the prime contractor for the THEL. A Pentagon statement
said TRW has been awarded a $5.6 contract for a system engineering study
of the mobile THEL.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The
engineering study will include the determination of requirements for a mobile
laser weapon. This includes its size and operational capability.
Officials said they hope that the development of the M-THEL will begin in
fiscal 2003. The project is expected to cost at least $200 million and take up

A Torah View of Supporting One´s Enemy
(IsraelNationalNews.com) Following is a
translation of the original Hebrew text. The
proclamation was released by Rabbi Oren
Duvdevani of Beit Shemesh´s ‘Netzach
Menashe´ Congregation.

In the wake of the recent acts of murder and in
the light of our neighbors' stubborn intention of
showing no mercy in uprooting the name of Israel
from the Land, and of unceasingly attacking the
innocent, I hereby repeat what I instructed to the
community previously -- that there exists no
halachic (Jewish law) permission whatsoever to
purchase fruits and vegetables of Palestinian
origin, even if this means lowering the degree of
"hidur" in one's
observance of shmita.
Similarly, there is absolutely no halachic
permission to employ Palestinian laborers, and all
who do so assist the Palestinian military to carry
out more and more acts of murder against us, and
go against what is written in the Torah: Do Not
Stand Upon Your Neighbor's Blood.
The nature of the prohibition is sweeping, and the
community is therefore obligated to abstain from
purchasing merchandise of Palestinian Authority
origin, or Palestinian merchandise from territories
under military administration in Yehuda, Shomron
and Gaza. Rather than Palestinian fruits and
vegetables, one should use "heter mechira",
"Otzar Beit Din", or produce from abroad,
each according to his practice. Even in the case
of particular items of produce which are available
only from Palestinian sources, one must abstain
from eating them until the Palestinians accept
upon themselves to cease their attacks on us.
Similarly, there is no halachic permission
whatsoever to get help from workers coming
from these places, and one is obligated to hire in
their place other workers, even if the cost is
greater, or to cancel the work one intended to
do. (It bears mentioning that employment of
workers without a permit constitutes a serious
infraction of civil law and a security danger of the
first degree.)
I repeat and emphasize: The above statements
carry, from my perspective, the authority of "psak
halacha" for the community and I expect of the
community to accept them, as the issue carries
the element of bloodshed and "pikuah nefesh".
In the light of the above, I wish to draw to the
community's attention that in the pastry shop
"Egoz" on Narkiss Street, there are employed
Palestinian laborers without permits from the
(Arab) village of Tzourif in Gush Etzion and as
such, it is forbidden to buy there.

Mid-East talks
Israeli soldiers fire on Palestinians near Ramallah
A round of talks between Palestinian and Israeli
officials aimed at firming up the
American-brokered ceasefire has ended in
mutual recrimination.
Reports say the officials blamed each other for
breaches of the ceasefire agreement which
came into force on Wednesday.
The officials were supposed to assess progress
on confidence-building measures which are
designed to help restart stalled peace talks.
Meanwhile the UN
Secretary-General, Kofi
Annan, who is
scheduled to meet
Palestinian and Israeli
leaders on Saturday to
push for a resumption
of peace talks, warned
both sides that their
fragile ceasefire will not
last unless political
discussions get under
way soon.
The truce agreement,
negotiated by CIA Director George Tenet, has
come under strain after sporadic violence.
Under the ceasefire terms, Israel has eased
travel restrictions in the Gaza Strip, opened
border crossings with Egypt, and withdrawn
tanks and blockades from flashpoints in
Palestinian areas.
Blaming each other
At Friday's meeting, Israel presented the
Palestinians with a list of all the incidents of
violence it had recorded since the ceasefire
was agreed and argued that they constituted
violations of the Tenet plan.
Palestinian officials in
turn accused the
Israeli army of
incursions into
Palestinian areas - a
violation of the
agreement according
to the Palestinians.
Officials on the
Palestinian side said
that they could not
carry out the arrests of
Hamas and Islamic
Jihad militants - action
called for under the
Tenet plan - unless Israel stopped these
reported incursions.
American representatives were at the meeting,
and a further meeting is planned for Sunday.
Anti-Tenet demo
On Friday, Palestinian demonstrators protested
in several West Bank towns against the Tenet
plan.
In Nablus, the crowd burned photographs of
the CIA chief along with US and Israeli flags.
The Nablus
demonstrators included
members of Palestinian
leader President Yasser
Arafat's Fatah faction
and of the Hamas and
Islamic Jihad militant
groups.
Hospital officials said
14 Palestinians had
been wounded in
Ramallah, five by Israeli
rubber-coated bullets.
They said Israeli
soldiers had shot and wounded seven
Palestinians in Hebron, six with rubber bullets
and one with a live round.
Annan pressure
Speaking in Beirut, Kofi Annan emphasised that
any final peace deal in the region rested on an
Israeli withdrawal from Arab land.
It also depended, he said, on the Lebanese
Government taking action against Hezbollah
fighters, who have captured Israeli soldiers in
the past.
During his visit, Mr Annan raised the possibility
of a new exchange of prisoners between Israel
and Lebanon.
Mr Annan is expected to tell both Yasser
Arafat and Ariel Sharon that the current
ceasefire will not survive unless they quickly
implement the findings of the Mitchell
commission.
BBC Middle East correspondent Frank Gardner
says a senior UN aide has indicated that Mr
Annan will tell the Israelis that it would be a
mistake to look at security as being separate
from a broader political framework.
In other words, without any sign of a peace
deal on the horizon, Palestinians lose hope and
Israelis will be threatened by more violence,
our correspondent says.
