Clues to 'The Big One?'—Bill Koenig/John McTernan
June 7, 2001
Note from Bill:
The following material will be included in the fourth printing of John
McTernan´s book, "God's Final Warning to America." The book will become
available at the end of this month.
John said that we could be just one major "sin event" away from the "Big
One" in the Western United States. He said four large earthquakes in the
1990s have all led to the massive San Andreas Fault line.
Additionally, those who have read John´s book know that these major
earthquakes have all fallen at the time of major "sin events."
John points out that seismologists have been marveling at the Landers
earthquake, which occurred on "Gay Pride Day"—June 28, 1992, because it
triggered other earthquakes 800 miles away. Never in the history of
seismology has an earthquake triggered others so far away.
The Hector Mine earthquake (October 16, 1999) followed shortly after the
signing of major homosexual legislation regarding "domestic partnerships
and discrimination" in California. That earthquake triggered future
earthquakes along the San Andreas Fault (and 130 miles south to the Salton
Sea) and alarmed seismologists.
The Joshua Tree earthquake (April 23, 1992) alarmed seismologists because
it was so powerful and close to the San Andreas Fault. It also triggered
the Landers earthquake. And the Landers earthquake triggered the Big Bear
earthquake, which also happened on the June 28, 1992 Gay Pride Day.
Moreover, these earthquakes are setting the stage for the “big one” along
the San Andreas Fault. And the sequence of “sin events” continues to
coincide with "natural events."
Furthermore, a large San Andreas Fault earthquake would likely trigger
other massive earthquakes ranging from the M6.0 to M7.0 range in the
western United States, pulling down and paralyzing the whole region. This
isn't wild speculation; this is the application of science to what has
happened within earthquake prone areas in California in the last ten years
coinciding with "sin events."
Scientists have estimated that there is a massive quake along the southern
San Andreas Fault approximately every 150 years. The last time a “big one”
occurred was on January 9, 1857. If you add 150 years to 1857, you come to
the year 2007.
Moreover, the pattern of earthquakes have been forming a triangle directly
pointing west towards Los Angeles.
We will continue to pray for those who have succumbed to these sins. As
Christians, we are to hate the sin and love the sinners.
Many of us have family in California who do not know Jesus Christ as
personal Lord and Savior. Let´s keep praying for them and sharing the
importance of these times with them. We know that their only hope comes
through the surrendering of their lives to Jesus Christ.

Seismologists and Sin - John McTernan
Between April, 1992, and October, 1999, Southern California experienced
four of some of the most powerful earthquakes to occur last century. The
earthquakes were all within a very close distance to each other. The
earthquakes were: Joshua Tree, 6.1, April 23, 1992; Landers, 7.6, June 28,
1992; Big Bear, 6.5, June 28, 1992; and Hector Mine, 7.1, October 16,
1999. Three of the earthquakes fell directly on the day of a national sin
event, while the Hector Mine quake occurred just a few days after such an
event.
Because of the potential devastation caused by earthquakes, seismologists
and geologists intensely study them. All of these earthquakes were the
subjects of intense study by the scientists. This research developed some
astounding information, which could have dire consequences for California.
The scientists studying these quakes believe that they are all connected
as the first earthquake, Joshua Tree, directly lead to the others. These
earthquakes were in a domino effect. This is amazing because of the
timing. A series of powerful earthquakes were tied directly to a series of
national sinful events. The pressure of one earthquake led to the next. It
is like the spiritual and physical realms are somehow tied together.
The great danger of these earthquakes is the effect on the San Andreas
Fault. This is the fault, which, if ruptured, would devastate California
resulting in multitudes of dead and injured and incredible property
damage. Let´s look at what the scientists have found about these
earthquakes and how the increasing boldness of national sin may culminate
in the destruction of California.
The earthquake sequence begins on April 23, 1992, and the United States
Supreme Court hearing the Planned Parenthood v Casey case. This case had
tremendous national implications as it was thought it could be used by the
Court to overturn the Roe v Wade case of 1973. On this very day the Joshua
Tree quake occurred.
The Joshua Tree quake was alarming to seismologists. This quake tore a
15-mile gash in the earth and was felt from San Diego to Las Vegas to
Phoenix. It caused over 6,000 aftershocks. This quake was very close in
proximity to the San Andreas Fault line. This earthquake caused a San
Andreas Hazard B warning to be declared. This warning meant there was a 5
to 25% chance of an earthquake occurring on the San Andreas Fault within
three days. The quake on the San Andreas did not happen, but the powerful
Landers quake occurred two months later. The pressure the Joshua Tree
earthquake was believed by the scientists to have triggered the Landers
quake.
The last Sunday in June is always Gay Pride Day. In 1992, it fell on June
28. The next day, June 29, the Supreme Court issued the ruling for the
Planned Parenthood v Casey case. The Court failed to use the Casey case to
overturn Roe v Wade. The Court upheld that abortion was legal. June 28 was
a huge homosexual event and June 29 was a huge pro-abortion victory.
In the early morning hours just before the Gay Pride Day parade in Los
Angeles, the Landers and Big Bear quakes struck. Landers was one of the
most powerful earthquakes in the twentieth century. It was the second most
powerful since the San Francisco quake of 1906. Landers quake tore a
53-mile long gash in the earth! The power was so great that it was felt
800 miles away and set off earthquakes all over the western part of the
nation. The Big Bear quake occurred three hours later and was reported by
the scientists to be directly connected to the Landers quake. The faults
of the two earthquakes were very close, only 20 miles away.
The scientists found the southern part of the Landers quake fault was
moved during the Joshua Tree earthquake, and these two earthquakes were
connected. The Landers quake then triggered the Big Bear quake just three
hours later. The pressure the Joshua Tree, Landers, and Big Bear
earthquakes were putting on the San Andreas Fault alarmed scientists.
These three earthquakes plus the San Andreas Fault made a triangle! The
Joshua Tree and Landers quake faults were on a line northwest from the San
Andreas Fault. The Landers fault touched the Big Bear fault. Big Bear then
went south back toward the San Andreas Fault. Thus the faults formed a
triangle. The scientists are extremely concerned about these earthquakes
and the stress they put on the San Andreas Fault. The EQE International
(Engineers who analyze earthquakes) expressed this concern in an article
titled, “The Landers and Big Bear Earthquakes.” Their concerns follow:
“Scientists are currently studying the possibility that these earthquakes
may be related to a future event on the San Andreas Fault, which, together
with the geological structures discussed above (Joshua Tree and Landers
Faults), form a triangle of faults. According to the USGS (United States
Geological Survey), there is a 60 percent chance within the next 30 years
that an M8 earthquake will strike the San Andreas Fault somewhere between
the Salton Sea and Palmdale.”
“Given that the USGS estimates a 60 percent chance within the next 30
years of an M8 earthquake striking along the San Andreas Fault, these two
quakes and the M6.1 event of April should be taken as a major warning.
Many seismologists are concerned that these events could be the beginning
of a sequence of events that will lead to the expected major San Andreas
event in this region”
According to the scientists, these earthquakes could be the beginning of
the sequence to rupture the San Andreas Fault. It is very possible that
the Joshua Tree quake on the very day of the Supreme Court´s abortion
case, may be the very day the scientist will pinpoint as the beginning of
the sequence that triggered the San Andreas Fault.
For seven years, this area was free of major earthquake activity. Then, on
October 2, 1999, the governor of California signed pro-homosexual
legislation. On October 10, the legislation was filed and on October 14
the governor made a speech stating that California was going to be a model
for homosexual rights for the rest of the country.
On October 16, 1999 the powerful 7.1, Hector Mine earthquake struck only
15 miles from the location of the Landers quake seven years earlier. Like
the previous quakes in this sequence, the Hector Mine quake was in the
desert and did little damage; however, its power was felt from Los Angeles
to Phoenix. It generated over 11,000 aftershocks. Like the Landers quake,
this one also triggered earthquakes far from its own zone. The Landers
quake triggered earthquakes exclusively north of the epicenter while this
one triggered the quakes southward as far as the Mexican border.
What troubled the scientists was that Hector Mine triggered a series of
quakes very near the San Andreas Fault some 130 miles away. They referred
to this as the faults “talking” with each other. After two weeks, the
quakes had stopped near the San Andreas Fault.
The scientists believe that the area where these earthquakes are occurring
have been inactive for several thousand years. The sudden occurrence of
four major quakes in seven years is an indication that they are all
related. One earthquake is setting the stage for the next. Instead of the
massive Landers quake decreasing pressure, it actually increased the
pressure that helped trigger the Hector Mine quake. In the May 10, 2001,
issue of Nature, Dr. Andrew M. Freed states the following:
“Stress changes in the crust due to an earthquake can hasten the failure
of neighboring faults and induce earthquake sequences in some cases. The
Hector Mine earthquake in Southern California M7.1 occurred only 20 km
from, and 7 years after, the 1992 Landers earthquake M7.3. This suggests
that the Hector Mine earthquake was triggered in some fashion by the
earlier event.”
Dr. Freed then went on to state all these earthquakes Joshua Tree,
Landers, Big Bear and Hector Mine are in a sequence. Freed stated: “The
June 1992 Landers earthquake M7.3, was part of an earthquake sequence
that
began with the April 1992 M.6.1 Joshua Tree pre-shock and continued with
the M6.2 Big Bear aftershock only a few hours after the Landers rupture.”
The scientists are showing a strong correlation in the sequence of these
earthquakes. They are trying to identify the triggering device. These
earthquakes are dangerously close to the massive San Andreas Fault, and
the Hector Mine quake actually triggered small earthquakes near this
fault. This sequence of quakes is following precisely a sequence of
national sinful events. It seems the physical and spiritual realms are
running on parallel tracks that are touching each other. Could the sinful
acts be the triggering device the scientists are looking for? Could April
23, 1992, be the date that started the countdown sequence toward the
massive San Andreas earthquake, which will devastate California? The
breaking of God´s moral laws is clearly affecting the physical laws.
On October 2, 1992 Governor Davis signed into law several bills, which
advanced the homosexual agenda. One such bill was A.B.537, which went
into
effect January 2000. This Bill created The California Student Safety and
Violence Prevention Act of 2000. This Act calls for the teaching of
tolerance for the acceptance of “alternative-lifestyles” to all students K
- 12. It is very possible that this type of legislation could lead to more
massive earthquake activity, heading to the San Andreas rupture. God is
not hiding the judgment, He is telegraphing it. These earthquakes are all
pointing to the San Andreas Fault. In fact, they have all formed a
triangle!
It seems the judgment has been set, and the rebellion against God will
bring it on. God has allowed the quakes on days of national sinful events.
There is no reason to believe that the earthquake sequence has ceased, as
the boldness to promote homosexuality, even to our children, is
accelerating. There was a seven-year gap between the Landers and Hector
Mine quakes. The continuing boldness to promote homosexuality and
abortion
means the pressure for the next massive earthquake is building and
building.
It is no coincidence these powerful earthquakes are falling directly on
days of national sin. The warnings from God are crystal clear, without any
doubt. Scientists estimate that there is a massive quake along the
southern San Andreas Fault approximately every 150 years. The last time
was January 9, 1857. It is very possible that the next massive quake could
be the tearing of the dreaded San Andreas Fault.

I got a question. Since Sweden has even higher
acceptance of gays than does the USA, where are the
Swedish Earthquakes?

LOL! Good question. But I don't think you will get a straight forward
answer. I read the first "warning to america" and saw it a s just
simple
propaganda. It also is very popular to talk about America as the new
Roman empire. The author in the first letter tried to put together a
scenario that GOD was punishing the U.S. because of its pressure for
Israel to give up land for peace. I pray for the soul of the author on
this because one of the greatest sins is to use the fear of GODs wraith
to pressure someone to do their own will.
In the last letter it talks about 4 earthquakes in the 1990's and tries
to tie them to "gay pride" or "sin events". But the logic used by this
author is flawed. As he points out, every 150 years there is a major
earthquake in California. The last one was in 1857, I don't think that
there was a major "Gay Pride" event in 1857. Further more he points out
that every 150 years a major earth quake happens, but since the region
was largely un populated in 1700 and before (except for indigenous
peoples) his whole point is canceled out. Earthquakes have been
happening in that area since before Christ walked the earth and before
"gay pride" or other "sin events", and other areas of this world have
committed far greater sins that man to man love and not been hit by a
earth quake. GOD did not quake Nazi Germany, or Ivan the Terrible reign
in Russia. Certainly with all of the Muslim , Buddhist and other
countries who do not recognize GOD's authority, it would figure that
they would not stop rumbling. Homosexuality did not make the ten
commandments, but worshiping other gods did. Were is GOD's warning for
them?
Here is the point, Since earthquakes have been happening in California
before the "sin events" and earthquakes and other "warning" are not and
did not happen in much more sinful area's in the world, this author is
incorrect as to the meaning, if any, of the quakes. As he points out
earthquakes are cyclical in nature.

The Highest Ranking Palestinian Authority Cleric
In Praise of Martyrdom Operations
On May 25, 2001, one week before the bombing of the
discotheque in Tel-Aviv, the PA Mufti of Jerusalem and
Palestine (appointed by Arafat), Sheikh 'Ikrimeh Sabri, the
highest-ranking cleric in the PA, delivered the Friday
Sermon in the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Sheik Sabri spoke in praise
of martyrdom ['suicide'] operations, citing early Islamic
history. He also criticized the Mufti of Saudi Arabia who
declared such operations as religiously illegitimate, and
demanded the release from American jails the four Arabs
convicted in the World Trade Center bombing in New York.
Following are excerpts from the sermon (1):
"Oh Muslims, let me begin my sermon with a quote from the
words of the Prophet's companion Abdullah Ibn Rawwaha in a
speech he delivered to his army on the eve of the Battle of
Mu'tah." He said: "Oh People, I swear by Allah, that the
thing you hate [meaning death] is what you are going out to
seek today: The Shahada [Marytrdom]."
"We are not fighting with a large army, nor with force. We
are fighting only with this religion [Islam] with which we
have been blessed by Allah. So attack and you will gain
one of two blessings: either victory or martyrdom. In the
eighth-century, the Muslim army consisted of only 3,000
soldiers, while the large Roman army exceeded 100,000. The
commanders of the Muslim armies discussed [the plans for]
the battle and decided to go into battle and clash with the
masses of Roman soldiers despite the fact that they [the
Muslims] had a small number of people and a small amount of
weapons."
"Oh Muslims, 'the first commander of the Muslim army
sacrificed his life in the Battle of Mu'tah. It was the
Prophet's companion, Zayd Ibn Al-Haritha. So the command
was taken over by the next commander, the companion Ja'far
Ibn Abu Taleb who came down off his horse and launched an
attack into multitudes of Romans until his right hand palm
was cut off. He passed the banner to his left hand but
that one too was severed. He still continued to hold the
banner of the flag between the two stumps where his hands
had been, until he was struck by a Roman soldier."

commanded by Khaled Ibn Al-Walid since he embraced Islam.
When he took the flag that day, he fought fiercely. On the
second day, he devised a brilliant plan for withdrawal,
sustaining only minimal casualties."
"Oh Muslims, when the Prophet sent the army to Mu'tah, he
gave them the following instruction: 'conquer in the name
of Allah, fight the enemies of Allah and your enemies in
Al-Sham [Syria]. You will find innocent people there. Do

Military Restaint, Diplomatic War

The incessant terrorist attacks, despite former prime
minister Ehud Barak's proposals at Camp David and despite
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's unilateral cease-fire, call
for a reexamination of Israeli policy in the past years.
To peacefully extricate ourselves from the historic
disaster called the Oslo Accords, we have to correctly
identify the enemy and formulate the appropriate strategy:
the enemy is not the Palestinian people, but the PLO, and
therefore we are not at war with the Palestinian people,
but with their extremist leadership. There are cursed times
in the history of nations when their leadership leads them
towards national disaster.
We can make peace with the Palestinian people, but not with
the PLO, to whom we have entrusted the Palestinians of the
territories in a terrible act of irresponsibility, both
towards them and towards ourselves. It was a foolhardy
attempt to reach peace with a party that demands not only
the territories - Judea, Samaria and Gaza - but also Israel
in its pre-1967 lines. This long-term goal was spelled out
only two months ago by the relatively moderate PLO leader
Faisal al-Husseini, in a speech in Beirut: "Our strategic
goal is Palestine from the (Mediterranean) sea to the
(Jordan) river."
Meretz leader Yossi Sarid himself admitted, at a political
convention in Tel Aviv last month, that the reason an
agreement was not reached was that the PLO insisted on the
"right of return," which even most of the Israeli left
rejected. It was Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser
Arafat who declared the Palestinian "War of Independence"
(the intifada) on Israel when he understood that at Camp
David he reached the maximum achievements possible on the
diplomatic track.
Since October 2000, the PLO has escalated its war against
Israel. This course is endorsed even by its relatively
moderate members such as Ziyad Abu Ziyad, who said a week
ago to a member of the Canadian parliament, that the
Israelis will not be allowed to live normal lives, enjoy
concerts, go out, and so on. When asked whether he was not
worried about the destructive consequences of such a
strategy on the Israeli public, he answered: "It is only
the first, natural reaction to a state of shock. But after
they get over their shock they will be led to accepting our
demands."
In these circumstances, the most erroneous strategy
conceivable is a harsh military response, while continuing
to adhere to the PLO as our political "partner." The
strategy we need is the opposite: military restraint while
declaring an all-out diplomatic war on the PLO in all the
world's capitals, and in Israel itself.
Few in Israel know that the PLO is still considered under
Israeli law a terrorist organization. It is no accident
that the Knesset has so far avoided changing the PLO's
legal status. Most of its members knew deep in their hearts
- even when they gave their support to the Oslo Accords -
that the PLO was and remained a terrorist organization,
even though it has political goals too.
Now the law should be enforced in letter and in spirit. The
whole world should be made to understand that the PLO has
ceased to be, and never again will be, our political
partner. All high-ranking PLO officials - including Arafat
- should be denied free movement, and when they leave the
territories, they should not be allowed to return.
Few Israelis know that the PLO's strong hold in the
territories is largely based on the tremendous powers
Israeli governments have granted it through thousands of
seemingly "small" administrative orders, as part of the
Oslo Accords. All these regulations should now be revoked.
Such authorities should be granted only to peace-seeking
parties.
Are there any such parties? Surely. Most of the Palestinian
people want peace. But as long as the PLO rules the
Palestinians with the force of arms, terrorism, money (both
from the West and from Israel itself), and the broad
authorities bestowed on it by Israel, these parties will
not emerge. However, once Israel adopts the appropriate
policy, it will find many Palestinian partners for peace.
About half a year ago, 99 Syrian intellectuals dared to
challenge the Syrian regime in a manifest called "The
Manifest of the 99," demanding democracy and freedom.
Syrian President Bashar Assad did not take immediate action
against them, and the result was that three months later
another manifest appeared, this time signed by 1000 Syrian
personalities. Where were they until then? Whoever heard of
them? They emerged only when they believed (mistakenly) the
government had softened. Had Assad waited a little longer,
surely tens of thousands would have come forth who could
have swept the whole nation behind them. Such things have
happened in dictatorships. Assad waited no longer and
destroyed the movement without anyone in the West - and
sadly not even in Israel - responding.
But the lesson remains: when the Israeli government takes a
courageous position and finally releases both us and the
Palestinian people from the clutches of the PLO, which is
leading its people to a second "Nakba," everyone will see
that there are Palestinians we can talk to and can make
peace with.

The Palestinians' military force, which numbers between 35,000 and 45,000
personnel, consists of eight main security units, which are divided into
three types: army (national security), intelligence, and police. There is no
clear division of labor among the different bodies, with the result being that
many of them deal with overlapping military-police spheres of activity. The
severance between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has the effect of
heightening
the autonomy of the forces and the lack of control over them and, in essence,
creates two separate authorities in those areas, thus doubling the number of
personnel.
The structure of the Palestinian security units in their present format was
decided in the Cairo agreement of May 4, 1994. At Israel's insistence, the
Palestinian force was defined not as an army but as a "strong police," which
would exist for five years, until the advent of the negotiations on a permanent
settlement. Most of the personnel come from units of the Palestine Liberation
Army (PLA), which were active in the Palestinian diaspora, and from other
PLO
security forces.
In order to prevent the Palestinian force from being transformed into an
outright army, - while at the same time enabling it to be effective - the
Cairo agreement stipulated that it would consist of only 9,000 personnel.
According to the agreement, 7,000 of these were to be from the diaspora -
that is, from the remnants of the brigades that made up the Palestine
Liberation Army (PLA) in Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Iraq, Sudan and Algeria - and
the
other 2,000 from the territories. To prevent the infiltration of undesirable (to
Israel) elements into the force, it was decided that every recruit would require
Israeli authorization.
The agreement also stipulated the types of weapons and other equipment
that
would be allowed in the hands of the Palestinian police: up to 7,000 personal
firearms, up to 120 medium and heavy machine guns, up to 45 armored
vehicles
(not tanks), as well as communications equipment, uniforms and berets.
That was what the Cairo agreement stated, but the implementation on the
ground followed a different course. Israel never demanded any control over
the recruiting of personnel, probably from fear of disrupting the
negotiating process. However, contrary to common knowledge, the
Palestinians
brought in all the weapons from abroad. Not one rifle was given to them by the
Israel Defense Forces (IDF), but every one that arrived had to pass inspection
in an Israeli forensic laboratory.
The division and overlapping of areas of responsibility that characterize
the forces of the Palestinian Authority are not a sign of weakness. With the
type of warfare that is being waged in the field - guerrilla - it may even be
advantageous.
This generally confused state is not the result of a deliberate choice by PA
Chairman Yasser Arafat: Because of internal problems, Arafat never had
another
option. As the survivor of four periods of exile and several attempts on his
life, the chairman, when he entered Gaza (on July 1, 1994), chose for
command
posts only those who were personally loyal to him, and not necessarily
those who
were talented. To the latter he doled out power, though only in bits and
pieces,
in some cases choosing one person at the expense of another.
One example was Arafat's choice of Sabah Sakher, a relatively unknown
person, to head the Preventive Security force during the early days of the
PA, because of his loyalty - an appointment that was eventually canceled
due to
pressure from Mohammed Dahlan and Jibril Rajoub.
Another striking case in point of the choice of a loyal individual is that
of General Hajj Ismail, commander of National Security in the West Bank. In
1983, officials in Fatah were harshly critical of Ismail for his poor
performance during the Lebanon War. That, however, did not stop Arafat from
promoting him and giving him command over the central and northern sectors
in
Lebanon. Ismail has remained by his side ever since.
At the same time, Arafat never relied solely on blind loyalty to serve his
goals. From the beginning, he ensured his status by a far simpler course:
control of the funds. The assistant commanders were always left hungry and
suspicious of one another, and above all, totally dependent on him.
Organizationally, this did not constitute a problem, as financial affairs
within the PA are not subject to any sort of public oversight.
Arafat's monthly task, incidentally, is to raise $60 million to pay salaries for
his administrative and security personnel.
The description on the following pages of the Palestinian forces was more
accurate up until the beginning of the Al-Aqsa Intifada, and changes are now
afoot. The dependency of heads of the different forces on Arafat is diminishing
as the uprising continues, both because of the severed relations between
them,
and because of increasing experience in combat. Today these forces are
much more
independent than they were eight months ago.
Are the members of these Palestinian forces involved in sniper and other
terror attacks?
Against the background of the incessant attacks on Israelis that are being
carried out both in the territories and from the territories, differing
appraisals exist in regard to the involvement of the approximately 40,000
bearers of arms in the PA, all of whom belong to established security units.
In addition to the opinion that these units are full partners in the
attacks, having received the green light from Arafat, there are those who
believe that incidents occur as a result of personal initiative, especially in
Gaza. The military forces are engaged to some extent in terrorist activities -
but not involved in an official way with the shooting and bombing incidents.
Whatever the case, there is general agreement that the body most closely
connected to the terrorist attacks is Force 17, which perpetrated many of
the shooting incidents in the Ramallah area. In addition, there is the force
headed by Tawfik Tirawi; in the Gaza Strip, experts site Mohammed Dahlan's
deputy, Rashid Abu Shabak, as a prime instigator of attacks.
And what will happen in the event of an all-out war?
The prevailing feeling is that from a technical point of view, the IDF can
defeat a Palestinian military force armed with light weapons and improvised
mortars, but such a confrontation will exact heavy casualties. Furthermore,
such
a confrontation will not only be against PA forces, but against hostile world
opinion and Western governments that will see Israel's reaction as an
example of
excessive use of force and as invasion of another nation's sovereignty. In any
event, after any such military victory, Israel would again find itself facing a
hostile population of three million Palestinians who would go on producing
guerrilla squads whose combat capability can only be reduced, but not
blocked
completely. Based on past experience in the international
Force 17 - Presidential Security
Role: An elite unit to protect VIPs (above all, Arafat) and official
institutions. The unit also engages in "routine security" operations
alongside National Security and also deals with members of the opposition.
The unit was established on the foundation of a previous unit with the same
name, which provided security for PLO officials and was a leading perpetrator
of
terrorist attacks.
Commander: Faisal Abu Sharkh.
West Bank commander: Mahmoud Damra.
Size of force: About 3,300
personnel. Approx. 2,000 in the Gaza Strip (divided into three territorial
battalions - north, south and Gazan), and 1,300 in the West Bank.
Weapons: Rifles and approx. 15 BRDM2 armored vehicles.
Record: Abu Sharkh took over as commander of the unit in 1994 when he
was
picked over the former commander, Abu Taib (see Special Intelligence).
Uniforms: Brown-green mottled uniforms with the number 17 on the arm, with
the "7" in the shape of the map of Palestine; gray mottled uniforms; or
T-shirts and mottled trousers. The intelligence personnel of Force 17 wear
red berets.
National Security
Role: The Palestinian Authority's main instrument of "routine security."
Responsible for maintaining security in the Palestinian areas of the Gaza
Strip by means of patrols, roadblocks and other methods. In an emergency,
National Security has the task of protecting the PA against external
threats. It also deploys the troops for the joint patrols .
Commander-in-chief: Abd el-Razek el-Majiada, headquartered in the Gaza
Strip.
West Bank commander: General Hajj Ismail, who operates autonomously.
Size of force: Four brigades, numbering 8,500 personnel, nearly all of whom
are
from the PLA. Three of the brigades are based in Gaza and are responsible
for
the south and north of the area, while the third brigade is deployed along the
1967 Green Line and functions as a border patrol.
National Security has 3,500 personnel in the West Bank, where it is divided
into
eight units, which are stationed in different cities. Unlike the situation in
the Gaza Strip, National Security in the West Bank does not have the
structure
of an organized military force.
Weapons: Approx. 30 BRDM2 armored vehicles, assault rifles, pistols.
Record: Most of the National Security personnel served in the various
brigades of the PLA, which operated under the command of Arab armies: the
Hittin Brigade in Syria, Kadassia in Iraq, Al-Mujahadin in Egypt and Bader
Force in Jordan. They were reinforced by troops of the former Fatah brigades
in
Lebanon: Yarmuk, Karameh, Jermak and Kastel.
Uniforms: The National Security units have green uniforms and green and
black berets. The Green Line brigade in Gaza (about 1,000 troops) also has
red berets, worn mainly by those who came from Tunis. Many of the National
Security personnel also work, after hours, for other security units.
Military Intelligence
Role: Collecting intelligence about Israel and dealing with internal
security. Theoretically subordinate to Majiada's National Security
apparatus. MI intervenes in incidents between the different units and serves
as
the "military police" of the security network. Also helps out in dealing with
opposition elements, and oversees the Military Police.
Commander: Mussa Arafat Abd el-Latif Alkadwa, who is Yasser Arafat's
nephew.
Size of force: Approx. 600.
Uniforms: Light-brown, yellow mottled uniforms (like desert camouflage
uniforms of the U.S. Army), though this generally applies only to trousers,
with
T-shirts used for the upper half of the body. Full dress includes red berets and
a red armband. They sometimes wear gray.
Preventive Security
The largest and strongest intelligence and internal security apparatus in
the areas of the PA. Its chiefs wield considerable power, vis-a-vis both the
Authority and the "street."
West Bank commander: Jibril Rajoub.
Gaza Strip commander: Mohammed Dahlan; his deputy is Rashid Abu
Shabak.
Role: Internal security, including
prisons and interrogations. Overall supervision of export and import of
materials into the PA, via control over economic monopolies (about 100) that
received PA licenses. The unit's members receive training in minor tactics of
warfare, and wield considerable power over the population.
Size of force: About 3,000 personnel, half in the West Bank and half in the
Gaza
Strip, and thousands of volunteers who beef up the ranks.
Uniforms: Civilian, or brown-yellow mottled trousers: when traveling in
vehicles, they look like civilians, but when they emerge they are seen to be in
uniform.
General Intelligence
Role: Prevention of operations by the Israeli Shin Bet (internal security
service) and countering internal subversion. Consists basically of
experienced professional intelligence officers who served for years in the
PLO's security units, and after the establishment of the PA, became active
in the territories.
Commander-in-chief: Amin el-Hindi.
West Bank commander: Tawfik Tirawi.
Gaza Strip commander: Ahmed Afifi, a.k.a. Abu-Nidal (not the well-known
terrorist from "Black September"). Size of force: About 800, mainly from
Tunis.
Weapons: Pistols, rifles (some of them stolen from the IDF), white jeeps.
Uniforms: Civilian dress.
Special Security
Role: Collects information about opposition organizations and leads
internal investigations. Commander: Muhammad Natur, a.k.a. Abu Tayeb.
Record: Formerly, Natur was Arafat's personal escort and was the second
commander of Force 17 (the first was Ali Hassan Salameh).
Size of force: A few dozen.
Uniform: Civilian dress.
Military Police
Role: Under the command of Military Intelligence, functions as an honor
guard for Arafat and in "routine security" operations.
Uniforms: Green uniforms, red berets, white belt, broad red armband.
Chairman's Guard
Role: Securing Arafat, under the command of Force 17.
Commander: Yusuf Ali Ahmed Abdullah, a.k.a. Dr. Yusuf.
Size of force: A few dozen.
Weapons: Pistols.
Uniforms: Black uniforms, black berets, leg band
Uniforms: Green uniforms, red berets.
Palestinian Police
Role: Civilian police duties.
Commander: General Ghazi Jibali.
Size of force: About 12,200
police, 7,500 in the Gaza Strip and 4,700 in the West Bank. Also supervises
a
rapid-deployment unit of several thousand, which wear blue camouflage
uniforms.
Weapons: Light arms and light-blue vehicles on which the word "Police"
appears.
Uniforms: Dark blue uniforms, black berets.
Maritime Police
Role: An elite force that helps in riot dispersal in addition to its
maritime duties. Serves as coast guard (enforcement of fishing laws,
prevention of smuggling, training of divers).
Role in Gaza Strip: Policing and prison security. The unit is considered an
elite force and some of its members received training in Egypt.
Commander-in-chief: Fathi Ghazem.
West Bank commander: Jam'a Ghali, a.k.a. Abu Zaki.
Size of force: About 1,000 personnel, 600 of them in the Gaza Strip. About
400 in the West Bank.
Weapons: Light arms and machine guns.
Uniform: Black trousers, white shirts (or black T-shirts), black berets.
Symbol: A ship's wheel and anchor.
Civil Defense
Role: Evacuation of casualties, fire control.
Commander: Mahmoud Abu Marzouk.
West Bank commander: Abu al-Wahid, answerable to Abu Marzouk.
Equipment: Ambulances and fire trucks.
Size of force: Between 1,000-2,000, plus volunteers.
Uniforms: Green uniforms, black berets.
Symbol: Ax and ladder.
Policewomen
Commander: Fatma Barnawi.
Role: Regular policing.
Size of force: Approx. 300 women.
Record: Barnawi made the headlines when she was arrested and sent to
prison for
planting a bomb in the (now-defunct) Zion Cinema in downtown Jerusalem in
1968;
she was released in 1977.
Uniforms: Dark blue uniforms.
Airborne Force
Role: Provides air transportation for Arafat.
Commander: Brigadier General Fathi Zaidan, head of aviation authority of PA.
Size of force: Four MI-8 and MI-17 helicopters (similar models) which are
used for flying Arafat and his entourage, three jet planes: a Boeing 727, a
small executive jet called "Al-Kuds," and a Focker 50.
Size of force: 21 pilots.
General Security Administration
Role: Coordination (theoretical only) between the bodies that supply
administrative services to the overall security network of the Palestinians in
the territories in the spheres of munitions, maintenance, medicine, training,
finances and other areas. Each district has a regional GSA chief.
Commander: Yusuf Nasser Bishtawi.
Record: Accompanies Arafat to various ceremonies, and to meetings with
Israeli figures, such as with Rabbi Ovadia Yosef
Air Police
Role: The force is responsible for security at landing fields, security for
Arafat's helicopter and air control.
Commander: Shukri Thabath.
Size of force: A few dozen.
Uniforms: Dress uniforms are light blue with blue berets, flight wings;
regular dress is dark blue.
Security Liaison Bodies
Role: The Palestinian security network operates a number of liaison bodies
at different levels, in which soldiers from National Security maintain
contact with Israeli liaison units.
There are three types of liaison groups: the Joint Security Committee, the
Regional Security Committees (there are two - in the Gaza Strip and the
West
Bank), and the District Coordinating Offices (responsible for handling ongoing
problems between the two sides on the ground). There are two liaison offices
in
the Gaza Strip and eight in the West Bank (one in each Palestinian city).
Semi-establishment organizations
Tanzim
Role: Militia of citizens who support Fatah.
Estimated size of force: From 10,000 to 40,000 members who were not
drafted into
the other military or security forces, many of which have been imprisoned in
Israeli detention centers such as Ansar and Ketziot. This is a regionally
organized body, whose headquarters in the West Bank and Gaza have no
control
over activists in the field. In some cases, Tanzim activists are sometimes
asked
to assist the heads of the established military forces. Some are policemen by
day and Tanzim by night.
Commander, Gaza: Ahmed Hils, who wields substantial influence in the
north, but
not in the southern part of the Strip. There, the Fatah "Hawks," formerly
associated with Tanzim, act freely and are lead by two families, Smahadna
and
Abu Rich.
Commander, Ramallah: Marwan Barguthi. He is particularly influential in
Jerusalem, but not in Jenin or Tul Karm. Weapons: Rifles (mostly stolen),
grenades, stones.
Extra-establishment organizations
Iz a Din al-Kassam
The military wing of Hamas, it has a religious-social orientation. Also
engages in the killing of drug traffickers and prostitute rings.
Commander, Gaza: Mohammed Deff.
Commander, West Bank: Mahmoud Abu-Hanoud.
Size of force: 20 or 30 four-man cells.
Islamic Jihad
Its leader, Ramadan Shalah, is based in Damascus, while in the Gaza Strip,
the leader is Abdullah al-Shami.
Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

*** Microsoft to work with Yugoslavia
BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) - Microsoft Corp. signed a letter of intent
Thursday to computerize public services in Yugoslavia. The deal
marked a renewal of ties by the nation with U.S. companies after
years of near isolation. The deal signed by Microsoft vice president
Michel Lakombe calls for the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant to
offer financing and expertise for projects involving the Yugoslav
government and its larger republic, Serbia. In exchange, the
authorities will help Microsoft establish its presence in
Yugoslavia, the state news agency Tanjug reported. The government
also pledged to help curb software piracy.

NEW YORK (AP) - By stretching minute strands of silicon used in
transistors, IBM researchers say they can make computer processors
run about a third faster. The process, dubbed "strained silicon,"
lets electrons to flow 70% faster through a transistor's silicon
strands, said Randy Isaac, IBM's vice president of science and
technology research. A microprocessor with strained silicon
transistors would run 30% or 35% faster, IBM estimates.

*** Taliban leader blasts UN proposal
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - The leader of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban
militia on Thursday lashed out at a proposal for beefed-up
monitoring of U.N. sanctions, saying those who go along with it will
be viewed as "enemies in the bunker." Mullah Mohammed Omar, in a
statement read on Afghanistan's Radio Shariat, called the proposal
an "aggression against the pride and dignity of Afghan Muslims."
United Nations Security Council members on Tuesday expressed support
for more monitoring of U.N. sanctions against the Taliban, the
Islamic militia that controls 95% of Afghanistan and is fighting a
fierce civil war against a northern-based opposition to capture the
remaining five percent. At an open council meeting, many ambassadors
endorsed a U.N. panel's recommendation last week for the
establishment of international teams in countries neighboring
Afghanistan to improve the monitoring of sanctions.

*** UN chart says AIDS epidemic spreading
UNITED NATIONS (AP) - With millions of people worldwide living with
AIDS and the HIV virus, a new U.N. chart paints a grim picture of
the epidemic spreading not only through Africa, but also through
parts of Asia and Latin America. Five countries have at least 2
million people each living with AIDS or the HIV virus - Ethiopia,
India, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, according to a chart
released Thursday by the United Nations Population Division. In five
other African countries - Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia and
Zimbabwe - at least 20% of the adult population is infected. By
2005, life expectancy will have dropped by at least 17 years in
these five countries as well as in Kenya, Namibia and South Africa,
the chart showed. Outside Africa, AIDS deaths will decrease life
expectancy by at least three years in the Bahamas, Cambodia, the
Dominican Republic, Guyana, Haiti and Myanmar by 2005.

*** Russian minister denounces waste plan
MOSCOW (AP) - Russia will not be ready to take in spent nuclear fuel
from abroad this year, even if legislation allowing imports of waste
passes quickly, the nuclear energy minister said Thursday. Alexander
Rumyantsev's comments came a day after the lower house of parliament
easily passed a bill approving imports of nuclear waste, in a move
critics said would turn Russia into the world's nuclear dump.
Proponents, including Rumyantsev, say the law will bring in billions
of dollars of revenue that can be used to clean up decades of past
radioactive contamination in Russia. Rumyantsev on Thursday
predicted quick passage in the upper house of parliament, but said
the country has extensive preparation work to do before it's ready
for new deliveries, according to the Interfax news agency.

*** NATO mulls Balkans reduction
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - NATO defense ministers decided Thursday to
maintain peacekeeping forces at current levels in Kosovo and allow a
"moderate" reduction in troops in Bosnia as conditions permit. The
action came after the latest six-month review of NATO-led forces in
the Balkans by the alliance's military leadership. Currently there
are about 42,000 troops involved in the Kosovo operation, 36,000
in-country and the rest in support operations in Macedonia and
Albania. There are about 20,000 troops in Bosnia. NATO military
officials defined the "moderate" reduction for Bosnia as about 10%,
but emphasized that depended on the makeup of forces and the needs
of commanders.

military force," said David Ivry, Israel's ambassador to Washington
and former head of the Israeli air force and national security

WASHINGTON (AP) - Researchers at the University of California,
Berkeley, have made the world's smallest laser, a nanolaser on a
nanowire that is a thousand times thinner than a human hair.
Researchers report that the tiny laser emits ultraviolet light and
can be tuned from blue to deep ultraviolet. The researchers made the
laser of pure zinc oxide crystals using a standard technique called
epitaxy. This involves immersing a device in hot vapor, which is
deposited as crystals in a very thin layer, often only a few
molecules thick.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Researchers have developed a new computation
system
that may shorten the time needed to find disease-causing genes from
months to mere seconds. In a study appearing Friday in the journal
Science, scientists at the Roche Group in Switzerland report that
they have created a database that contains single gene differences
among 15 different subspecies of laboratory mice. A combination of
these gene differences, called single nucleotide polymorphisms, or
SNPs, are believed to be responsible for diseases that have genetic
links. A new computational system allows the researchers to swiftly
identify the SNPs that may, in combination, cause disease.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - The state has asked 22 school districts to
explain why students wrote identical paragraphs in answer to certain
questions on statewide exams, Treasurer Doug Roberts said Thursday.
The Michigan Educational Assessment Program science and social
studies tests were administered this winter to fifth-, seventh- and
eighth-grade students at 550 school districts. The irregularities
were noticed by a testing company that graded the exams. If the
state finds the schools were cheating, it can give the schools a
zero for results on that test, said Roberts, whose department
oversees the tests. If individual teachers or students were
involved, the school would be responsible for disciplining them.

Steve Solender, President and CEO of the United Jewish Communities -The
Federations of North America, and Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice
Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish
Organizations, are launching a joint program this week to encourage Jewish
families from the US to spend their summer vacation in Israel. In the US
yesterday, during a video-conference with directors and representatives of
Jewish communities and organizations convening at the Conference of
Presidents, Solender called on all Jewish organizations to transfer their
planned conventions for this year to Israel. Thus, it will be possible to show
solidarity with the Israeli people, filling the hotels and contributing to the
depleted tourism industry.
Malcolm Hoenlein, of the Conference of Presidents, and a driving force
behind the initiative, expressed shock at the cancellation of trips to Israel
and emphasized that now is the time to strengthen ties with Israel and show
unity. According to Hoenlein's proposal, the Jewish organizations will raise
significant contributions enabling any family deciding to visit Israel in the
summer to receive subsidies to cover part of its expenses.
During the videoconference, Alon Pinkas, Israel's Consul General in New
York, warned that canceling visits to Israel would distance Israel from the
Jewish world leading to alienation.
The Jewish Agency will make every effort to assist in the organization of
the visits and programs, so as to enable the visitors to have a pleasant and
challenging stay.
The initiative came in response to cancellation of visits to Israel out of
fear resulting from the security situation. The Reform movement in the US
decided to cancel its youth movement trips to Israel this summer; 1,500
teenagers, comprising the largest group of American youth to visit Israel each
summer. The decision raised sharp criticism in the Israeli and US-Jewish
establishment, as well as in the Reform movement itself, and it is possible
that
the decision will be reversed.

U.S. seeking one year postponement of Maccabiah Games

The United States delegation is asking for a one-year postponement of the
World Maccabiah Games due to the threat of Palestinian terrorism. "We are
asking for a postponement until next summer due to the risk from
terrorists," Robert Spivak, president of Maccabi USA, said Thursday night.
"Maccabi USA always has, and continues to focus on the best interests of
the
team as our main priority."
The multisport Games, often referred to as the "Jewish Olympics", are
scheduled to begin on July 16 in Tel Aviv. Spivak said the Maccabi USA
Executive Committee met on Saturday night to review many issues affecting
the U.S. Maccabiah Team and the 16th Maccabiah Games in light of the
increase in terrorism in Israel.
"As a result we will immediately meet with Maccabi World Union to urge the
postponement of the 16th Maccabiah Games," he said.
A delegation from the United States, which fields the largest team apart
from that of the Israeli hosts, will meet Maccabi World Union officials in
Israel this weekend and are expected to announce the results of that meeting
next Monday. Some 600 athletes have been selected to represent the United
States
at the Games.
The heads of the Maccabiah will meet top national officials, including Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon, on Sunday as the organizers try to salvage the event
which is due to be held from July 16-26. The meeting with Sharon was
organized
with the help of Sports Minister Matan Vilna'i.
The delegation heads are meeting on Sunday in order to try and allay any
fears of delegations due to the current security situation. According to
some sources, there has been a much lower registration for the 16th Games
than had been hoped for. A report on Wednesday in the Manchester Jewish
Telegraph said that the British team was seriously considering pulling out
of the games.
Over the years the Maccabiah Games have featured such Olympic greats as
swimmer Mark Spitz and gymnast Mitch Gaylord. American swimmer Lenny
Krayzelburg, a triple Olympic gold medallist in Sydney last year, was
scheduled to compete in the Games this year.

Military Intelligence points finger at Arafat

After Major General Amos Malka, Director of Military Intelligence, finished his
address to a gathering held in honor of Haim Bar-Lev at Glilot on
Wednesday, someone in the audience posed a tough question about the
IDF's perception of the enemy. "For close to an hour we've heard you speak
about the situation in the Palestinian arena," the man said. "In actual fact,
you've spoken about just one man: Yasser Arafat. Does everything you've
said lead us toward the conclusion that Israel should act to oust him?"
Malka, a highly seasoned intelligence chief, was far too experienced and
polished to fall into that trap. His answer was vague and evasive. It betrayed
nothing.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer and Israel Defense
Forces (IDF) Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz were working out the next round of
General Staff appointments. The most important selection is Malka's
replacement as Military Intelligence Director: Major General Aharon Ze'evi
(now the Head of the Technological and Logistics Directorate).
In almost certainty, the gist of Malka's perceptions will be supported by
Ze'evi. As Malka sees it, Arafat has failed to tackle the Palestinian terror
infrastructure in a systematic fashion. IDF intelligence experts believe
Arafat's cease-fire policy is provisional and ephemeral. They believe, that so
long as no major strategic gain is guaranteed after eight months of fighting,
Arafat will choose continued violence against Israel, rather than a struggle
against Islamic opposition forces within his own Palestinian society.
Malka believes Arafat's cease-fire declaration is a "tactical step, and the lull
will last a few days or months. ... Arafat's standing there holding a bomb in
his hands. By playing with explosives, he poses a threat to regional stability,
and even to the internal stability of some of our neighboring states."
Arafat believes the current U.S. demand that the cessation of violence
constitute an obligatory, first step will soften as time passes, Malka says.
Arafat, he insists, is not going to show flexibility about the "red line" borders
he carved in the sand during past negotiations with Israel - it doesn't matter
to him that his intransigence about these disputed points might result in his
bequeathing the violent struggle against Israel to future Palestinian
generations.
Malka believes, "It would be a mistake if, after each terror attack, we check
to see whether it was perpetrated by Hamas or Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah or
the Popular Front. Arafat is the one who is deciding about the strategy, and
making use of terror."
Malka's public address, and remarks in recent weeks by top Israeli officials,
suggest the security system has set its focus clearly on Arafat. If the PA
chairman has not (at least for the time being), been targeted by a policy
aiming at his removal, he has become the butt of harsh castigation.
Ben-Eliezer recently echoed this when he declared that Arafat has
"completed his historic mission." Similarly, Communications Minister
Reuven Rivlin, whose views mirror those of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, has
declared: "Arafat is the brunt of the problem."
In his address on Wednesday, Malka was emphatic that his staff's
intelligence work has deciphered the lingering, cryptic riddle of the Al-Aqsa
Intifada. Showing some professional pride, he declared that, "It has been
proven categorically that Arafat controls what goes on in the field.

Minister Matan Vilnai- Arafat not directly tied to terror attacks

Minister of Science, Culture Matan Vilnai, told Israel Radio this morning
that there is no direct connection between terrorist attacks and Arafat.
The anchor of the news program, Areh Golan, declined to ask Vilnai what
connection there is between the fact that Arafat released the leaders and
technical men behind the bombings from prison and the fact that the bombs
then went off.
Golan also failed to ask Vilnai if, as a member of the Security Cabinet, he
maintains that Arafat should be held blameless if the terrorists he declines
now
to detain from the list that Israel has presented to the PA carry out attacks.
On 8 May Minister Matan Vilnai told Israel Radio in an interview on the noon
magazineprogram that the Strella anti-aircraft missiles that the Palestinians
have "do not endanger people - just aircraft".
Vilnai also has explained that the Palestinians are not shooting at Gilo -
just the first rows of building of Gilo.

"Matan Vilnai was born in Jerusalem in 1944. He holds a B.A. degree in
history from Tel-Aviv University.
Vilnai had a distinguished military career, serving in the IDF for more than 30
years. During the Yom Kippur War, he commanded a task force in Sinai.
From
1978-1982 he was Chief Paratroop and Infantry Officer and, in 1976, was
deputy
commander of the Entebbe rescue mission. In 1989, he was appointed OC
Southern
Command. From 1994-1997 Major General Vilnai served as Deputy Chief of
the
General Staff. On retiring from the IDF in 1998, he was involved in economic
affairs and chaired the Public Committee for Violence Reduction in the Israeli
schools. In 1999 he joined the One Israel party and was elected to the
Knesset.
In August 1999, Matan Vilnai was appointed Minister of Science, Culture and
Sport. He was reappointed to this post in March 2001."

In the May 2001 issue of SKY & TELESCOPE (pages 115 to 123), Thomas
Dobbins and William Sheehan discussed rare historical observations of
bright, star-like flares from certain regions on the planet Mars. They
suggested that the flares might be caused by specular reflections of sunlight
off water-ice crystals in surface frosts or atmospheric clouds, specifically at
times when the sub-Sun and sub-Earth points were nearly coincident and
near the planet's central meridian (the imaginary line running down the center
of the visible disk from pole to pole).
Based on their analysis, Dobbins and Sheehan predicted that flares like
those last reported in 1958 might erupt this week in Edom Promontorium,
near the Martian equator at longitude 345 degrees. Dobbins organized an
expedition to the Florida Keys, where Mars would ride high in the south
under exceptionally steady skies. Expedition members observed the planet
using a variety of telescopes nightly beginning June 3rd. No flares were seen
for several nights. But on June 7th, beginning around 06:40 UT (2:40 Eastern
daylight time), about 80 minutes before Edom crossed the central meridian,
the team observed a series of brightenings. Each lasted perhaps 3 to 5
seconds; they occurred sporadically over the next 90 minutes or so, until
clouds ended the observations. At times Edom appeared to pulse with a
period of 10 to 15 seconds for a minute or two. The flares were seen visually
at about 300 power through two homemade 6-inch (15-centimeter) Newtonian
reflectors (one f/6, the other f/8) by Dobbins, Donald Parker, Gary Seronik,
Rick Fienberg, and David Moore and were recorded on video at 1,400 power
through a Meade 12-inch (30-cm) Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope by Parker
and Tippy D'Auria. Visually, the flares seemed to cut the dark linear feature
Sinus Sabaeus nearly in two.
Mars observers in North America, especially the western half, are
encouraged to observe the planet visually and to record it on video over the
next two or three nights, when conditions will continue to favor flares in
Edom. Observing reports -- including your location, Universal date and time,
telescope/equipment description, sky conditions, and any other relevant
details -- should be sent to the Mars sections of the Association of Lunar
and Planetary Observers (http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/alpo/) and British
Astronomical Association

International Mars Watch (http://elvis.rowan.edu/marswatch).

The ceasefire continues, say the commentators, but the communities of
Gush
Katif didn't notice it amidst the mortar attacks they suffered last
night. Shells were fired towards Netzarim, Ganei Tel, and N'vei Dekalim,
and this morning three more mortars fell near an IDF outpost outside
Gadid. No one was hurt. Palestinians also directed gunfire towards
several IDF positions in Gaza, and the soldiers returned fire whenever they
identified the source of the shooting. In Judea and Samaria, there were
three shooting attacks - at cars near Chomesh (northern Shomron) and
south
of Hevron, and at an IDF base south of Jenin - but these did not turn into
headlines, nor were details very plentiful, as no one was hurt. Defense
Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said last night that there is not yet a
ceasefire, but rather "fire with periodic ceasings."
Three armed gunmen entered fields near Givon this morning, between
Jerusalem and Givat Ze'ev, and made off with two tractors. In the process
they overcame a security guard, who was taken for medical
treatment. Police have confirmed that tracks from the scene point to a
nearby Arab village. The fields and tractors belong to farmers from Ofrah,
some ten kilometers northeast of Givon.
The army continued this morning "shaving" the sides of the Aboud by-pass
road near N'vei Tzuf, removing the trees from behind which Palestinian
terrorists shot at passing Jewish cars at least 15 times in the past
several months. One of these attacks ended in the murder of Lt. Ya'ir
Neventzal three weeks ago, while others led "only" to wounds. Local
residents said today that they will cease their own "shaving" activities,
and will suffice with protests outside the Prime Minister's Office. They
will meet with Sharon early next week.
2. DON'T ABANDON THE STREETS!
A series of many anti-Israel demonstrations is planned for this weekend at
locations all around the world - and pro-Israel supporters are anxious to
meet the challenge. Jewish groups around the globe are participating in a
joint effort to show local and world media - and the Israeli government -
that support for a strong Israel is a worldwide phenomenon. The long list
of planned anti-Israel rallies can be seen at this
website: "www.geocities.com/endtheoccupation/", and supporters of Israel
are asked to counter-demonstrate in close proximity, bringing photos of the
missing soldiers, the murdered Jewish children, and other signs of
Palestinian terrorism. Suggested themes: PA media incitement, world
media unfairness to Israel, the Jewish connection with the Land of Israel,
the desecration of Jewish holy sites, PA human rights violations, Oslo
accord violations, etc.
3. MORE SECURITY TALK
The Palestinian Authority's cabinet decided officially today to accept the
ceasefire - but Hamas still refuses to go along. A senior Hamas leader,
Abdul Aziz Rantisi, promised that his terrorist organization would continue
its attacks against Israel. He accused CIA head Tenet of inciting
Palestinian infighting. Israel Police were on high alert for possible
attacks within the Green Line today.
A meeting will be held in Ramallah today between GSS head Avi Dichter,
PLO
leaders Muhammad Dahlan and Jibril Rajoub, and CIA head George
Tenet. Tenet will try to formalize the ceasefire announcements of Sharon
and Arafat. Sharon, at the behest of the Americans, will now require only
six weeks of a ceasefire before he agrees to resume negotiations on a
further hand-over of territory from Judea and Samaria.
4. GREEN LINE PATROL BEGINS
A new IDF division was inaugurated this week: "The Regional Command for
the Seam Line." Arutz-7 correspondent Haggai Huberman reports that the
new
command is responsible for the area adjacent to the Green Line, that which
separates Judea and Samaria from the rest of Israel. The new command has
already begun conducting patrols on both sides of the line.
Writing in HaTzofeh earlier this week, Huberman explained that the old-new
idea of using the Green Line to separate between Jewish and Arab areas has
already been tried in Gaza, but not with particularly positive
results: "Some say that the separation in Gaza is a successful
implementation of this idea. But the fact is that the fence separating the
sides is often breached, and Palestinians often manage to penetrate into
Israel, sometimes by merely jumping over the fence. In many places, they
have managed to break down portions of the fence, and the army is currently
engaged - sometimes under fire - in repairing them... The fence has also
become a focus of terrorist activity; about half of the 170 bombs that were
placed since Rosh HaShanah explode along the border fence…"
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres is against building a fence along the Green
Line. He told his Labor Party colleagues last night that such a border
would, among other things, essentially forfeit the blood of the Jewish
residents of Yesha who remain on the other side. Defense Minister
Binyamin
Ben-Eliezer responded that the lack of a fence would increase the
casualties within pre-'67 Israel.
5. ARMY TAKES STRONG ACTION - AGAINST JEWISH RESIDENTS
Army and police forces used force to evacuate, early this morning, the
civilian outpost established by Shomron pioneers and Zar family members
west of Shechem. This is the site where Gilad Zar, the Shomron Region's
security coordinator, was shot to death by Palestinian terrorists less than
two weeks ago. Lands owned by the Zar family are located in the area, and
the family wishes to establish a community there in memory of their
son/brother.
At yet another new Jewish presence near Yakir, in western Shomron, a
stalemate has developed. The police and army forces arrived on the scene
early this morning to remove two caravans the residents placed there last
night. Hundreds of local Israelis began to arrive, leading to a
standoff. Shomron Regional Council head Bentzy Lieberman, who insists
that
the caravans have a permit, is scheduled to meet with the head of the IDF
Central Command in an attempt to find an immediate solution. The army is
attempting to prevent additional residents from arriving on the scene; it
has produced an order declaring the area a closed military zone, but the
residents claim that the right authority did not sign it.
6. ORTHODOX JEW MURDERED IN SWITZERLAND
An Israeli from Bnei Brak, about 70 years of age, was murdered in Zurich,
Switzerland last night. Walking alone on a street last night with his
customary yarmulke on his head, he was shot to death by an anonymous
assailant, for what the local police and Foreign Ministry assume to be
Palestinian anti-Israeli motives. The murderer took no money from his
victim.
7. BEIT EL STUDENTS PAY CONDOLENCE CALLS TO RUSSIAN
FAMILIES
A delegation from the Bnei Binyamin Yeshiva High School in Beit El paid a
moving series of condolence visits to four families of Dolphinarium
slaughter victims last night. The students and teachers first visited the
Nelimov family in an old apartment in a run-down southern Tel Aviv
neighborhood; only a mother and her 14-year-old son remain, following the
terrorist-deaths of Yelena, 18, and Yulia, 16, last Friday night.
The students also visited the Normanov family - mourning for their
soldier-son Dani, 21 - which still lives in Russia; they are sitting shiva
(the ritual mourning period) in a Defense Ministry-supplied hotel room in
Tel Aviv. The mourning mother greatly inspired their visitors by informing
them that as a result of the events of the past few days, including the
care and concern showed them by many Israelis, she has decided to
immigrate
to Israel.
The visitors then went to comfort the grieving families of Roman
Dezanshvili, 21, and Eliya Gutman, 19, both from Bat Yam. "The feelings of
national unity, kindness in times of trouble, and inspiration engendered by
the visits provided a sense of upliftment that will not be forgotten by
both the teachers and the students for a long while," said veteran teacher
Tzvi Perla of Beit El, who coordinated the trip.
8. STUDENTS ARRIVE IN ISRAEL
Some 400 Jewish students from North America arrived in Israel this week,
for the latest "installment" of the anti-assimilation Taglit (Discovery)
program. The students have never been to Israel before, and they will be
treated to ten intensive days of Eretz Yisrael and Jewish
culture. "Despite the security situation here and the State Department
advisories regarding travel to Israel," says Dr. Shimshon Shoshani,
director of Taglit, "the students continue to come." Another 3,100
students are scheduled to arrive by the end of June, and a total of over
14,000 students from 100 universities in 15 countries will have arrived by
the end of the year - the largest number of student visitors in any one
year since the establishment of the State. The students will visit
important sites in the history of the nation and the country, and will meet
Israeli soldiers, students, and new immigrants of their age.

The Bush administration reportedly told Arab-American leaders that the White
House is reconsidering weapons sales to Israel after its use of F-16 aircraft
against the regime of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Arab-American leaders said they were told by senior U.S. officials that the
administration would give "serious consideration" to future U.S. arms sales to
Israel during the Israeli-Palestinian war, Middle East Newsline reported. The
senior officials - including National Security Council member Bruce Riedel -
attended a meeting sponsored by Arab and Islamic leaders.
The meeting was organized by the Arab American Institute. The group's
president, James Zogby, said he called the meeting after being told by Arab
leaders that the Arabs were increasingly seeing the conflict as a "U.S.-Israeli
confrontation with the Palestinians."
Riedel reportedly told the Arab-American leaders that the administration is
reviewing the complaints that Israel is using such U.S.-made systems as the
AH-64A Apache attack helicopter, F-16 fighter and light anti-tank weapons,
against the Palestinians. The Arab-Americans said this violates the Arms
Export
Control Act.
"We are concerned that U.S. interests in the region are being compromised
because Arab public opinion views U.S. weaponry as killing Arab children,"
AAI chairman George Salem said. "Obviously, our community is monitoring
this
crisis very closely and we will continue to raise it at the highest levels."

Who are “THEY” anyway?
A friend told me, when speaking about the International News on CNN,
BBC and others. We hear only what they want us to hear. So I ask him,
who are they? He says you know the ones who are running everything,
the Illuminati and the rest of them big shots.
Well he is right you know, at least to a point, but the One who is
really running things I refer to Him as God or if you´re Jewish G-d,
same God, just a matter of spelling and respect. But lets talk about
the News for a minute. Have you noticed that they all come on at the
same time, they all have the same format, you know, first the News,
then Weather, and then Sports. Not only that, but they all have the
same bias, the same slants on everything. It makes no difference how
wrong or how corrupt their slant is.
So there is a “they” out there somewhere and they are certainly
controlling the news you receive over that Television. But I think I
am preaching to the choir anyway, so I will go on, and talk about them
some other time.
According to the news coming out of Israel, you´d think the cease fire
is a major success, when in fact, there is a war going on here. Last
night the Palestinians fired Mortar Shells into the Jewish Settlement
Netzarim, and four Mortar Shells were fired at Ganei Tal, and another
was shot at an IDF position near Ganei Tal.
A roadside bomb went off near the Israel and Egyptian border, no one
was hurt. A Town just above where we live, on the back road to
Jerusalem, Hussan, stones thrown at their cars wounded three Israelis.
Twice I´ve driven through this same hail of stones but none hit me. A
car was hit by sniper fire near Hebron damaging the car but no
injuries. Near Jenin Palestinians fired shots and the IDF returned
fire.
The five-month-old baby, who was hit in the head while in the family
car near Shillo, is still in the hospital in serious condition.
In Gaza, Palestinians threw anti-tank grenades at IDF Soldiers. And
another roadside bomb exploded near an IDF Tank near Atzmona in Gush
Katif, and shots were fired and there were casualties. This is but a
small part of the action we saw last night. But whoever they are, it
is obvious they have said not to report it.
Arafat is in trouble, not with his brain washed Islamic people, but
with the world community, because they are starting to see him for
what he is, a murderer and a Liar, and that is what Sharon called him
while being interviewed by Russian TV. He is isolated in Ramallah, and
sees his infrastructure falling apart all around him. He can´t even
move to Gaza with his helicopter. The Israel Bank has stopped all the
money flow into Gaza. Fuel and supplies are being held down to a
dribble. The Palestinians are getting more dangerous daily, because
they are getting desperate, but still they will not speak out against
the one who has brought them to this point Yasser Arafat, for fear of
being beheaded or at least shot. Sharon has been very careful in
waging a war just out of site from the news media; he has divided the
“West Bank” into several sections, and has placed the IDF in position
to attack. It is well known that Arafat has passed out the heavy
missiles and weapons for what he is calling his last assault against
the Israeli, in hopes of the Arab world coming to his rescue, we will
see.
I will close with this, you see on TV how these poor people have to
walk around the checkpoints and they are not allowed to use the roads
in and out of their areas. One can only say this to them, at least
they´re not being ambushed and shot by Israeli snipers as they travel
on their way home.

(AgapePress) - A California street preacher will soon publish a Bible
for Christians who have a heart to tell others about Jesus.
Ray Comfort, a street evangelist who has witnessed to strangers
around the world, says a publisher gave him an idea several years ago
for a Bible targeting evangelists. Next month, The Evidence Bible
will be published -- and, as Comfort says, a trip to virtually any
Christian bookstore will highlight the need for such a Bible.
Comfort says he was warned by a publisher not to do an evangelism
Bible because they do not sell well. But in response, an editor told
Comfort, "That's why we must do it." Comfort says there is a "sad
lacking" of such a resource in Christian bookstores. "You go into a
Christian bookstore and [ask to see the] evangelism section ... and
the bookstore owner will probably give you a magnifying glass," he
says.
Comfort says The Evidence Bible is an easy-to-read King James Version
of the Bible that features study guides and tips for street
evangelists. He says it contains "everything anyone could ever want
to know about evangelism -- how to make an atheist backslide, how you
can prove God's existence, quotes about evolution -- every issue you
can think of ... a hundred questions normally asked by non-
Christians."
Comfort is founder of Living Waters Publications, based in
Bellflower, California. His ministry sent out 4.3 million gospel
tracts last year. The 51-year-old Comfort spends Friday nights along
the streets of Santa Monica, preaching and witnessing to crowds along
the Third Street promenade -- the third most popular tourist spot in
Southern California.

As one of those few folks, privileged to be one of Ray Comfort's
proof-readers for the brilliant The Evidence Bible, can I thoroughly
recommend the work for any Evangelising Christian. And shouldn't that be ALL
of us (grin).
I would have loved to have had the work a decade ago. The devil is gonna
hate how this text will rescue the lost from his domain and thrall.

China Tests ALCM
China test-fired a new air-launched cruise missile (ALCM) for the first time
last month, according to U.S. intelligence officials. The weapon, China´s first
land-attack cruise missile, is Beijing´s answer to the ship-launched U.S.
Tomahawk.
The ground-hugging, air-to-surface missile was launched from a B-6 bomber
and was deemed successful by defense and intelligence agencies,
according to officials familiar with the test.
The missile is assessed to be capable of carrying a 1,100-pound warhead --
either high-explosive or nuclear to an unknown range. It was the first time
China test-fired its new land-attack cruise missile.
Military analysts said China has been working secretly on the cruise missile,
which is an extended-range version of the C-802 anti-ship missile. The
missile is said to be powered by a turbojet engine and is expected to have a

Turkey Confirms Air Exercise With Israel, U.S.
Turkey has confirmed that it will launch the first air exercise with Israel and
the United States. Officials said the exercise, named "Anatolian Eagle" will
begin on June 17 and last two weeks. The exercise comes amid escalating
tension in the Middle East and a drive by Ankara to improve relations with
neighboring Syria.
Israel, Turkey and the United States will all contribute advanced fighter-jets
for the exercise, to be held in southeastern Turkey. They will include F-15
and F-16 warplanes.
Turkey's air force has not announced the exercise, although it was confirmed
in Ankara, Jerusalem and Washington. Military sources said Ankara does
not want to arouse anger in the Arab world as it seeks to improve relations
with such countries as Syria, Iraq and the Gulf states. MENL
Croatia Secretly Sells Israel S-300 System
Croatia has secretly sold Israel an advanced S-300 anti-aircraft system. The
London-based A-Sharq Al Awsat said Croatia bought the S-300 system from
Russia in 1995 for $19 million. Israel, the newspaper said, financed the deal
and the system was then taken out of Croatia to the Jewish state.
Israel turned to Croatia, the newspaper said, because it could not purchase
the system directly from Moscow, a major supplier of weapons to Arab
states. Russia has been offering the S-300 to such countries as Iran, Libya
and Syria.
Croatian authorities are now conducting an investigation into how the S-300
was smuggled out of the country. The newspaper said the sale and delivery
of the system took place during the regime of the late President Franjo

U.S. Plan On Iraq Gets Cool Reception
The Bush administration's strategy towards containing Iraq has received a
cool reception from U.S. allies in the Middle East. Arab and Turkish officials
have told their U.S. counterparts that the administration's proposal for smart
sanctions would only hurt Baghdad's neighbors. They said the White House
campaign to help the Iraqi opposition would end in disaster. MENL
Bleeding Fever Hits Kosovo
The World Health Organisation is investigating an outbreak of a rare bleeding
disease in Kosovo which has claimed three lives in the last two weeks.
Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever - named after the first two areas where it
was first recognised - is thought to have infected twenty people in the south-
east of the province. This makes it Kosovo's most serious outbreak of the
fever in 15 years.
The disease, which is borne by ticks, kills three in every ten of its victims. It
causes internal bleeding and a high fever. According to the World Health
Organisation there is no safe or reliable vaccine against it BBC
2 Dead in Australia Legionnella Outbreak
Two people have died and another two are in hospital after an outbreak of
Legionaires disease in the south eastern Australian city of Melbourne.
Another three people have also been infected but have been discharged from
hospital after treatment. Health authorities have traced the outbreak to an
area near Melbourne's Alfred Hospital in the inner city. Two of those infected
work at the hospital. Victoria's Chief Health Officer John Catford says all
cooling towers in the area have tested negative to the Legionnnella bacteria.

Monsoon Floods Kill 8 In Bangladesh
Monsoon rains caused mud slides and floods in parts of Bangladesh that
have killed at least eight people, officials said Thursday. Tens of thousands
were stranded in their waterlogged villages.
At least 100,000 people have been marooned in a flooded region 120 miles
northeast of Dhaka, said the capital's Flood Control and Information Center.
Many villagers are using boats to get around.
Flood waters washed away a railroad culvert in eastern Brahmmanbaria
district, cutting off railway links with Dhaka, Bangladesh Railway said in a
statement. Engineers were working to restore the line.
Five children died Wednesday after a mud slide buried five huts in
Brahmmanbaria, 50 miles east of Dhaka, administration officials said. Three
men drowned in flood waters in southern Barguna district.
A total of 14 inches of rain - usual at this time of the year - have fallen across
northeast Bangladesh since the monsoons hit the country early this week.

Chilean Oil Spill Damages Birds, Salmon Farm
An oil tanker that ran aground in a remote southern Chilean fjord in late May
spilled 92,600 gallons (350,528 litres) of crude, leaving an oil slick 70 miles
(112 km) long and damaging wildlife and a salmon farm, the Chilean Navy
said this week.
Maritime authorities initially dismissed the incident, which occurred on May
25, saying the leak had been negligible and had caused no damage to the
environment. But the Navy this week admitted the spill was worse than first

Wal-Mart Cuts KingdomBuy.com Joins Other National Retailers in Spurning
Christian Organizations
Following in the footsteps of Nordstrom and J.C. Penney, Walmart.com has
canceled its affiliate relationship with KingdomBuy.com – an online shopping
mall that raises money for Christian organizations.
Walmart.com is an independent company based in California and is jointly
owned by Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., based in Arkansas. The company notified
KingdomBuy of its termination on Wednesday. KingdomBuy's director Gary
Sutton, said he was told the national retailer will no longer allow religious
organizations to be affiliates – the same explanation given by Nordstrom.
Yet, Walmart.com is an affiliate of iGive.com, which also donates money to
Christian organizations, though not exclusively. At iGive.com, shoppers may
designate secular groups as recipients as well. In the last 120 days,
iGive.com has issued checks to various Christian churches and other
religious organizations. Nordstrom, J.C. Penney and FTD.com are all
affiliates of iGive.com. Walmart.com did not return WorldNetDaily's repeated

Tumor Risk 'Increases With Phone Use'
Analogue mobile phone users are more than three times more likely to
develop a potentially deadly form of brain tumor, Swedish scientists have
warned.
In what is believed to be the largest survey of brain tumor patients and their
mobile phone use, they found that the likelihood of developing acoustic
neurinoma increased with the number of years of phone use.
This also meant that users of the more recently introduced digital phones
might face an increased risk, they said, even though the survey found they
were not at greater risk of cancerous or benign brain tumors. Australia's
analogue network was closed by Telstra last year after more than a decade
of use.
The study, of more than 1600 brain tumor patients aged 20 to 80, was
conducted by the Swedish oncology professor, Lennart Hardell. Similar
findings by Professor Hardell caused a storm two years ago when they were
broadcast by the BBC's Panorama program and shown around the world,
including in Australia. That research was rejected by the mobile phone
industry.
But the new findings, presented to a London conference yesterday, are seen
as more persuasive, especially because of the size of the survey. the age
