A question has come up regarding the three days and three nights Our
Lord spent in the grave. I recall having read, somewhere, that He was
crucified on Thursday, and not Friday but have forgotten where I read
it. Perhaps you, or someone on the list, can help me out. It would be
appreciated. Thank you and Praise the Lord!

There is tremendous confusion on this subject which are all connected with
the sabbath. Let me quote A.E.Knoch.
The annual sabbaths have been confused with the weekly observance, and the
weekly sabbath has been unwarrantably altered to the first day of the week.
Thus, by ignorantly supposing that the great sabbath day which began the
festival of Unleavened Bread must come on Saturday, we have the error that
the Lord was crucified on Friday. By rendering "one of the sabbaths" as
"the first day of the week", we have been misled into thinking that the Lord
rose on Sunday, instead of Saturday morning.

Regarding the three days and three nights
Mark 16:1 And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the
[mother] of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come
and anoint him.
Mark 16:2 And very early in the morning the first [day] of the week, they
came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.
And look at
Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested
the sabbath day according to the commandment
Luke 24:1 Now upon the first [day] of the week, very early in the morning,
they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared,
and certain [others] with them.
Mark 16:1 And when the sabbath was past..[they] bought sweet spices and
then in Luke 23:58
they
prepared spices
and rested the sabbath day
..
Obviously TWO sabbaths, are indicated here, with a work day (Friday) a day on
which they could buy and prepare spices. This brings us to three days and
three nights
Now, if Thursady was the high sabbath (John 19:31), and Jesus(Yeshua) died
and was buried before the high sabbath, It is necessary to conclude that
Jesus(Yeshua) died late Wednesday, or more appropriately, late in the fourth
day of the week..
Counting from the end of the fourth day we go three days and nights : 1) To
the end of the fifth day, 2) To the end of the sixth day, 3) To the end of
the seventh (sabbath) day.
This is confirmed by looking at
Luke 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
This can only mean the evening that begins the sabbath is about to occur. Is
there another logical interpetation of it?
so then,
Luke 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
In the
Greek
sabbaton epiphosko
And
Matt 28:1 In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the
first [day] of the week,
.
In the Greek sabbaton epiphosko
Can this mean anything other that the evening that begins the the first day,
the end of the sabbath is about to occur?
A more probable interpretation of Matthew 28:1 may be:
The end of the sabbath drew on, toward the first [day] of the week came Mary
Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.
The events of Matthew 28:1-6 occur at the end of the seventh day or, on the
sabbath.
So then, the Lord of the Sabbath
Mat 12:8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
Mar 2:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
Luk 6:5 And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the
sabbath.
was buried at the onset of the high sabbath of the Feast of Unleavened
Bread, remained for three days and three nights, and arose at the end of the
weekly Sabbath. Was revealed on the first day of the week, the the Feast of
First Fruits (Leviticus 23:9-14), which is the first day of counting the omer
to Shavuot (Pentecost) (Leviticus 23:15-21)
If you are unfamiliar with how Yeshua (Jesus) fulfilled the spring feasts
I
encourage you to learn. It will change your life.

DISASTER HITS TEL AVIV BEACHFRONT - 18 DEAD IN BOMB BLAST
Saturday Morning - June 2, 2001 - 7:01 a.m. My clock radio came
on and the first words I heard were: "Seventeen dead, 115 injured, ten of
them seriously." I instantly became fully awake, my heart jumping in my
chest. My first thoughts were: "O Lord, not again. How much tragedy can
Israel take?" The details followed.
At 11:30 p.m. Friday evening (June 1, 2001), a suicide bomber
joined a group of young people waiting to enter The Pasha nightclub (a
popular beach-side entertainment center located near the Dolphinarium, the
US Embassy and many upscale hotels) and set off a powerful bomb. Within the
bomb were many nails and pieces of metal, which became lethal projectiles
when the bomb exploded.
The bulk of those killed and injured were 16-19 years old. Many
of the injured were teenage immigrants from the former Soviet Union. The
death toll stands at 18, but is expected to rise.
Friday evening is a time when Israeli young people gather for a
time of fun and relaxation after their week of school, army or work. Some
of the most popular gathering spots are the restaurants, coffee shops,
pubs, and discos along the Tel Aviv beachfront. They were laughing,
talking, and having a good time, when suddenly their entertainment turned
into terror. Many of these young people serve in the army (at 18, most
Israeli boys and girls enter the armed services). They have received
vigorous training for emergency situations. Many of the young men
immediately took off their shirts to be used as tourniquets, but nothing
can prepare you for the sight of bodies being thrown into the air.
The screaming of ambulance sirens and the cries of the injured
filled the air. The scene was one of mayhem, disaster and death. One
eyewitness described the scene by saying the streets are "flowing with
blood." Another talked of picking up body parts. Still another described
the earth as "wet with blood." Paramedics worked frantically in triage
conditions to find those who could be saved and whisk them to area
hospitals to receive immediate attention.
Islamic Jihad has claimed responsibility, while Hamas has
threatened ten such bombings (eight have gone off to date). A spokesman
for Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Abdel Aziz Rantisi, said last night: "It is
the right of the Palestinian people to terrorize the enemy."
Tel Aviv has been considered a relatively safe location. Now,
the people of Tel Aviv and, indeed, all of Israel realize that there is no
place where they are immune to the danger of terrorist activity. Yes,
people will continue to live their lives, but this incident has really
struck home. Now Tel Avivians are clamoring for retaliation.
Many are responding to the bomb as follows:
Ranaan Gassin, the Israeli Spokesman for the Prime Minister's
office, condemned this as senseless massacre. "When the Security Cabinet
meets on Saturday morning at 8 a.m., we'll take cool and calculated
decisions and target the perpetrators and also aim for not only the
perpetrators but also at those who coordinated and those who facilitated
the entire operation. We will not scrap the unilateral cease-fire, but
given emotions that is under greater pressure than before." He went on to
say, "This attack speaks more than a thousand words and should at last show
the world who here is the victim and who is instigating the cycle of
violence. The whole world is watching, and I think the whole world will be
able to reach the proper conclusion as to who is responsible."
Yossi Gal in Jerusalem: "Who is responsible in this continuous
wave of incitement by Palestinian Authority? A green light by PA to carry
on terror. The primary responsibility of every government is to bring
security to its citizens and this is what this government is going to do.
Terrorism will not be tolerated. This horrendous, criminal, barbaric act
happens after ten days of unilateral cease-fire -- after ten days of our
unilateral cease-fire, during which there have been more than 100 terror
attacks."
Dennis Ross has responded by saying, "The anger level is
enormously high. The attack aimed to kill as many young people as possible.
The pressure is on Sharon to do something more. The situation will
deteriorate
Regarding the Mitchell report, the first step was end of
violence, then 2nd was confidence building
No country would accept that
kind of attack on their people."
Israeli Cabinet Member, Dan Naveh talked with Ashley (WNBC -
MSNBC reporter) on the phone.
Dan Naveh: "Seventeen kids [now eighteen] were murdered. It is
less important which group is responsible -- Arafat's responsible. He gave
the green light on his official television to his suicide bombers. Ten
days ago our Prime Minister declared a unilateral cease-fire, but when you
see such terrible pictures, you wonder."
Ashley: "You say it falls under PA, but others have trained.
There is not a shortage of young men who are willing to die for Allah. How
can you be so sure Arafat knew about this?"
Dan Naveh: "We know they [the terrorists] are coming out of PA
territories. We have clear information that a green light was given by
Arafat to commit this violence. But using violence and terrorism
they
should realize they can't gain anything
We have no interest in harming
innocent people, but to prevent future attacks, deter future violence."
US President Bush issued a statement: "I condemn in the
strongest terms the heinous terrorist attack in Tel Aviv this Sabbath
evening. There is no justification for senseless attacks against innocent
civilians. This illustrates the urgent need for an immediate, unconditional
cessation of violence. I call upon Chairman Arafat to condemn this act and
to call for an immediate cease-fire. My deepest condolences, and those of
the American people, go out to the victims and their families."
As I write this, Prime Minister Sharon, Foreign Minister Peres,
and the Security Cabinet are meeting to assess the situation and determine
how and when Israel should respond. Eleven days ago, Prime Minister Sharon
took a bold step and called for an unconditional cease-fire. Since that
time, Israel has restrained herself, even though the Palestinians have not
reciprocated. Since the cease-fire incident after incident has occurred,
(over 100) -- including four murders on the roads this week -- and the
people of Israel have become increasingly restless. This is the eighth out
of ten suicide bombs that Hamas had predicted.
Now is the time when Sharon and his cabinet must make tough
decisions. Pray that the hand of God will guide them. Pray that God will
give them strength and wisdom as they move ahead.
As I spoke to a group of 30 Israelis yesterday, I felt impressed
to read Psalm 84:12-13: "For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord
gives grace and glory; no good thing does He withhold from those who walk
uprightly. O Lord of Hosts, how blessed is the man who trusts in Thee!"
Join me as I pray today that in this time of tragedy, the people and
leaders of Israel will put their trust in the Lord, their Sun and Shield.
I urge you to pray. Israel needs our prayers more than ever
before. The people are heartsick. The past month has been filled with one
tragic happening after another. The wedding hall collapse, which killed 23
and wounded more than 300, is still a fresh wound. The people of Jerusalem
talk about it constantly. Everyone knew someone who attended the wedding.
Now to have so many young people wounded and killed is like turning a knife
in an already bleeding wound. Pray for God's comfort for the families.
Pray for healing for the wounded. Pray that any other plans to blow up
Israelis will not be successful. (By Rebecca Brimmer, June 2, 2001)

Danes want to develop schizophrenic pigs
Danish scientists want to produce schizophrenic pigs so they can
research how the illness affects humans.
Pigs and humans share similar characteristics like brain size and
intelligence.
Researchers will attempt to bring on the illness by injecting a
poisonous substance into pregnant pigs to slow down the development of
the foetus.
They hope the experiments will help them understand how schizophrenia
works in humans so they can develop ways of preventing it.
"With pigs we can study how the illness influences their place in the
social ladder," says research assistant Sidse Arnferd from the
psychiatry unit at Bispebjerg Hospital.
Pigs' brains are big enough to give appropriate results on brain
scans. They also have a well developed social hierarchy, which it is
thought will help the project because schizophrenics have problems
with social behaviour.

Subject: [bprlist] Jellyplants on Mars
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Sat, 2 Jun 2001 12:26:18 -0400
--------
Jellyplants on Mars
Scientists are creating a new breed of glowing plants --part mustard
and part jellyfish-- to help humans explore Mars.
Listen to this story (requires any MP3 Player)
June 1, 2001 -- The first colonists on Mars probably won't be humans.
More likely, they'll be plants. And the prototypes of these leafy
pioneers are under development right now.
As part of a proposed mission that could put plants on Mars as soon as
2007, University of Florida professor Rob Ferl is bioengineering tiny
mustard plants. He's not altering these plants so that they can adapt
more easily to Martian conditions. Instead, he's adding reporter
genes: part plant, part glowing jellyfish -- so that these diminutive
explorers can send messages back to Earth about how they are faring on
another planet.
Right: Green-glowing Arabidopsis thaliana -- a future pioneer of Mars?
Image credit: Rob Ferl and the University of Florida.
The plants can be genetically wired to glow with a soft green aura
when they encounter problems. Within a garden grouping, some plants
could report (by glowing) low oxygen levels, while others might signal
low water or, say, the wrong mix of nutrients in the soil.
"Just like humans, plants must learn how to adapt to any new
environment," Ferl says. On Mars they would encounter extreme
temperatures, low air pressure, exposure to harsh ultraviolet light,
and generally inadequate soil. "We are using genetics to create plants
that can give us data we can use to help them survive."
Learning to grow plants on Mars will be an important precursor to
humans living there. Future explorers will need oxygen, food, and
purified water -- items too costly to ferry from Earth to Mars on a
regular basis. But plants can help provide those essentials
inexpensively and locally as part of a self-contained
"bioregenerative" life support system.
Bioregenerative life support means humans, plants, and microbes
working together in a renewable system. Humans consume oxygen and
produce carbon dioxide. Plants take carbon dioxide and turn it back
into breathable air. Human waste (after processing by suitable
microbes in bioreactor tanks) can provide nutrients for growing
plants, which will, in turn, produce food for people.
Such life support systems on Mars will probably involve growing crop
plants in Martian soil within specially designed greenhouses, says
Andrew Schuerger, a manager of Mars projects with Dynamac Corporation
at the NASA's Kennedy Space Center.
Above: An artist's concept of a full-fledged Martian greenhouse, an
essential part of any future human colony on the Red Planet. [click to
Ferl, Schuerger, and Chris McKay of NASA's Ames Research Center want
to test the greenhouse concept by sending bioengineered plants to Mars
on board a small NASA spacecraft -- a "Mars Scout." They envision a
seed-bearing lander that would scoop up a portion of Martian soil, add
buffers and nutrients, then germinate the seeds to grow within a
miniature greenhouse.
Thriving plants won't glow at all. They'll look like normal mustard.
But plants struggling to survive will emit a soft green light, a
signal to researchers that something is amiss. A camera onboard the
lander would record the telltale glows and then relay the signal back
to Earth. No humans are required on the scene -- a big advantage for
such a far away experiment.
The plants' designer genes consist of two parts: a sensor side to
detect stress and a reporter side to trigger the glow.
The sensor side of the gene comes from the plant itself -- Arabidopsis
thaliana, a member of the mustard family also known as thale cress.
Ferl and his colleagues picked Arabidopsis because three attributes
suit it well for a Mars mission: Its maximum height is about 6 inches,
so it can fit inside a small greenhouse, its life cycle is only six
weeks, and its entire genome has been mapped. (For these same reasons
Arabidopsis plants are already orbiting Earth on board the
International Space Station as part of an independent experiment to
learn how plants react to free fall.)
The reporter side of the gene comes from Aequorea victoria, a
jellyfish common along the Pacific coast of North America. Aequorea
live about six months, grow to 5 or 10 cm, and can glow soft-green
along the rim of their bell-shaped bodies. Scientists aren't sure why
they glow -- Aequorea victoria do not flash at each other in the dark,
nor do they glow continuously. But the touch of a human hand, for
example, can stimulate the jellyfish to "light up."
Right above: An overhead flash reveals the outlines of Aequorea
victoria. The blue glow is reflected light, not bioluminescence.
Credit: C.E. Mills. Right below: True bioluminescence around at the
rim of the jellyfish. The light produced by Aequorea is actually
bluish in color, but in a living jellyfish it is emitted via a coupled
molecule known as GFP, or green fluorescent protein, which causes the
emitted light to appear green to us. [more]
Once the sensor and the reporter gene fragments are stitched together,
Ferl uses a bacteria to move the newly-constructed gene into the
plant.
Because plants are sessile -- that is, they can't get up and walk away
from stressful situations -- they can survive only by adapting to
whatever their environment offers. So, they've developed an exquisite
variety of sensing mechanisms to monitor their surroundings and
trigger appropriate responses to stressors. By adding phosphorescent
reporters to those sensors, Ferl says, "we can learn not just whether
the plant is surviving, but whether it's struggling to survive, and
whether it's surviving because it's mounting specific responses to the
Mars environment."
Left: In 1999, Ferl sent 40 reporter-gene plants into orbit aboard the
space shuttle. The blue-stained Arabidopsis roots show specific areas
affected by lack of oxygen. [more]
Ferl offers this example of an adaptive response to hard times: Here
on Earth when plants are flooded by water, they have access to less
oxygen. The plants respond by changing their metabolism to generate
energy anaerobically (without oxygen) -- a less efficient pathway, but
one that is available to them. On Mars plants might adopt the same
response to survive in the thin oxygen-poor atmosphere.
Water on Mars will also be very scarce, and plants will need to
conserve every bit. The leaves of all plants contain stomata, little
holes that let gas molecules in and out. Plants have the ability to
open and close stomata as conditions demand. "One can imagine plants
[living on the surface of Mars in the distant future] that might adapt
by means of fewer stomata in their leaves: that means fewer
opportunities for water vapor to leave, and maybe that would be a
positive adaptation," says Ferl.
The first wave of Martian plants envisioned by Ferl and his colleagues
would sprout inside a very small and protected greenhouse. We don't
know exactly how big it's going to be," says Schuerger, "but we're
shooting to fit a foot print of about 10 inches by 10 inches, and
weighing about 15 to 20 pounds." The greenhouse, he expects, could
hold as many as 20 to 30 plants. "We can grow a single plant, he
says, "in one or two grams of soil, in a tiny glass or steel or Teflon
container."
Right: Tissue-cultured Arabidopsis thaliana. Credit: USDA
The plants might also be exposed to Martian light, which could be
piped into the greenhouse (inside the lander) through fiber optics,
and to a moisture-added, oxygen-enhanced version of the Martian
atmosphere. But the project's primary goal is determining whether
plants can thrive in Martian soil -- an experiment best done on Mars
itself!
As important as it is to know whether plants can actually grow on the
Red Planet, this project also has a philosophical purpose, says Chris
McKay, the principal investigator of the proposed Scout mission. "It
will be a symbolic step," he says, "of life from Earth, leaving Earth,
and growing somewhere else." And when this little plant grows on Mars,
he believes, it's going to be a major awakening of our interest in our
future in space.

Molecular "Gateways to Death" Identified
April 27, 2001 7:05 CDT
Researchers have just identified two key components of what are probably
"gateways to death" in the members of the cell's mitochondria. When the
mitochondria receives cell death signals, these gateway proteins are believed
to form pores within the mitochondrial membranes that let molecules pass
into the cell, creating a cascade of chemical reactions that result in the
death of the cell.
Programmed cell death, or apoptosis, culls unneeded cells during
development and growth. Apoptosis also protects organisms by killing off
defective cells. Defects in apoptosis can cause harm, such as extended cell
survival, which could allow cancer cells to expand. Also, faulty apoptosis can
speed up the rate of cell death, contributing to neurodegenerative diseases,
immunodeficiency disorders and infertility. Finding these gateway molecules
could lead to new molecular targets that improve therapy for a vast array of
disorders, according to the researchers.
The details of the research are published in the April 27 issue of Science in
which the researchers, led by Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator
Stanley J. Korsmeyer show for the first time two pro-apoptotic proteins,
called BAX and BAK, which make up the critical initiating factors that trigger
the apoptotic process in mitochondria.
Korsmeyer and his colleagues at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard
Medical School say that a control protein called tBID triggers BAX and BAK
to form pores in the cell membrane, allowing cytochrome c to flow into the
cell. This influx of cytochrome c launches the biochemical death cascade.
"Earlier work revealed that cells contained an anti-death molecule, BCL-2,"
said Korsmeyer. "But then we began finding these 'evil twins' such as tBID-
closely related members of the BCL-2 family that were pro-death molecules."
This discovery led Korsmeyer and his colleagues to propose the "rheostat"
model of apoptosis, in which a balance of pro- and anti-apoptotic molecules
is what decides whether a cell lives or dies in response to stress. They also
discovered that an excess of BAX and BAK induced cell suicide if a cell was
stressed by chemicals or other apoptosis-inducing signals.
"We knew that further upstream, BID had to be activated by known death
receptors on the cell surface. But then we began to ask how this activated
tBID, and its cousin molecules, triggered the beginning of apoptosis in the
mitochondria. We believed it had to cause a central initiating event that
released cytochrome c from the mitochondria. We had evidence that tBID
just couldn't do it by itself."
During their work, Korsmeyer and his colleagues used a retrovirus to insert
activated tBID into the embryonic fibroblast cells of mice. In those cells,
which were engineered to lack single genes for BAK or BAX, introducing tBID
triggered normal cell death. "So, then we wondered whether both
downstream molecules were required, which is why we tested double
knockout cells lacking both BAX and BAK," said Korsmeyer. "The
combination of taking out both proteins was extremely synergistic, and these
cells were highly resistant to apoptosis. It was a very impressive effect," he
said. The scientists also found that in mouse liver, BAK and BAX were
required for response to normal death signals.
Korsmeyer explained that detailed molecular studies of how the two proteins
behaved suggest that activated tBID can trigger BAK or BAX to change their
conformations from receptors in the mitochondrial membrane to pores that
allow cytochrome c, and maybe even other death-related molecules, to flow
into the cell.
The researchers also tested whether a broad range of death signals, from
DNA damage to radiation, required BAX and BAK to trigger apoptosis. They
discovered that the two proteins were, indeed, required. In a similar way,
stress signals from the cell's endoplasmic reticulum, where protein transport
takes place, did not trigger normal apoptosis without BAX and BAK.
"These studies show that BAX and BAK are the obligate gateway that clearly
starts the process of apoptosis," concluded Korsmeyer. He also pointed out
that this apoptotic process involves not just the disruption of function in the
cell, but within the mitochondrion itself, partially because of the loss of
cytochrome c from the energy-producing machinery.
Because of the central roles of BAX and BAK in apoptosis, said Korsmeyer,
"in neurodegenerative disorders involving accelerated apoptosis, inhibiting
this pro-death step might prove to be therapeutic. And conversely, in
diseases like cancer, accelerating the activation of BAX and BAK could be a
potential therapeutic as well."

Sharon sued in Belgium over 1982 Palestinian massacres: paper
BRUSSELS, June 2 (AFP) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is being sued
in a Belgian court, holding him responsible for the 1982 massacres of 800 to
2,000 Palestinian civilians in Lebanese refugee camps, the daily Le Soir
reported Saturday.
The suit was filed under a unique 1993 law that allows Belgian courts to try
persons here, regardless of their nationality, for genocide and other crimes
against humanity committed abroad.
Sharon was due to visit Brussels next week, but Israeli television reported
the prime minister had cancelled the trip in the wake of a suicide bomb
attack in Tel Aviv, which killed 18 people.
The newspaper said Belgian judicial authorities were studying whether the
suit against him was admissible under terms of the law, which is currently
being used to try four Rwandans in connection with the 1994 genocide in
their central African country.
The plaintiffs in the suit against Sharon are a mix of Palestinians, Lebanese,
Moroccans and Belgians grouped in an ad hoc committee.
They accuse Sharon of allowing Christian militias to slaughter between 800
and 2,000 Palestinian refugees at the Sabra and Shatila camps located in an
area of Lebanon controlled by the Israeli military after Israel's 1982 invasion
of Lebanon when Sharon was defense minister.
An Israeli commission of enquiry in 1983 found Sharon indirectly responsible
for the killings, a finding that forced him to resign his post.
And the United Nations has officially classified the Sabra and Shatila killings
as acts of genocide, Eric David, international law professor at the Free
University of Brussels, told Le Soir.
Last January, when he was campaigning for prime minister, Sharon
expressed his regrets for the "terrible tragedy" of the 1982 massacres, but
refused to apologise.
"What it was," he said in a press interview, "was an act of killing carried out
by Arab Christians against Arab Muslims."
Arabs also blame Sharon for provoking the current intifada or Palestinian
uprising with his visit to east Jerusalem's al-Aqsa mosque compound, the
third holiest site in Islam, last September 28.

Sharon cancels European tour: television
JERUSALEM, June 2 (AFP) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has
cancelled the tour of Europe he was due to make next week, following the
deadly attack in Tel Aviv, Israeli public television reported Saturday.
The indefinite postponement was decided at an extraordinary security
cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv, called to decide on a response to the suicide
attack overnight that left 18 dead.
Sharon was due to start his tour with "a working visit" to Berlin on June 4 and
5.
He was then due to go to Paris for an official visit June 6 and 7. That would
have come after a brief stopover June 6 in Brussels, for a meeting with
Swedish Prime Minister Goeran Persson, whose country holds the rotating
EU presidency until the end of June.

Hamas leader stresses "right to defend" after deadly Tel Aviv blast
JERUSALEM, June 1 (AFP) - The spiritual leader of the radical Islamic group
Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, said Saturday after a deadly bombing in Tel
Aviv that killed 17 Israelis that the Palestinians had the "right to defend"
themselves.
Sheikh Yassin did not claim responsibility for the bombing on the part of
Hamas, but complained in comments to journalists broadcast by Israeli
television of Israeli "aggression" against the Palestinians.
"We are defending ourselves; it is our right to defend ourselves," he said.
Hamas spokesman Abdelaziz Rantissi earlier told the Qatari satellite
network al-Jazeera that his movement had not claimed the bombing.
But he justified the attack, saying the Palestinians have the right to "resist
Israeli occupation."

Governments Condemn Israel Bombing
Foreign leaders on Saturday strongly condemned the suicide bombing that
killed 17 Israelis, but urged Israel's government not to be swayed from
seeking a peaceful resolution of its conflict with Palestinians.
"The French government fervently condemns such blind and murderous
acts," French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin said in a statement Saturday. He
called on all parties "to do everything they can to stop the spiral of violence."
In Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry said the bombing was obviously
aimed at disrupting peace efforts and deserved "the worst condemnation and
indignation."
"Under these conditions, patience and calm are needed," the statement
added. "One should not allow the provocations of the extremists, no matter
how severe, destroy the plans to de-escalate the crisis, stop violence and
establish a political dialogue between Palestine and Israel."
Foreign Minister Abdul-Illah Khatib in Jordan, Israel's Arab neighbor,
denounced the attack, saying Jordan "condemns any action that targets
innocent civilians no matter what the justification was."
He urged Israel to "refrain from being carried away in reactions that would
only lead to escalating the crisis."
Australia's prime minister, John Howard, said he "was appalled to learn this
morning of the terrorist outrage overnight against innocent civilians in Tel
Aviv."
"Both sides need to act decisively and with courage to prevent a further
decline into senseless violence," he said. "The only solution is one arrived at
through dialogue between the parties, in which terrorist violence plays no
part."
The European Union condemned the bombing "in the strongest possible
terms." The 15-nation EU urged "the Palestinian Authority to do everything
within its power to prevent terrorist attacks and to bring those responsible to
justice."
The bloc urged Israel "not to take measures which result in a further
escalation of the cycle of violence."
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder also criticized the bombing, but
called on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to continue peace negotiations.
"I ask you, Mr. Prime Minister, in view of the horrifying act not to be talked
out of efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Middle East conflict,"
Schroeder wrote in a message to Sharon. "I also call on the Palestinian side
to do everything to prevent such attacks."
British Prime Minister Tony Blair expressed "total condemnation of the
attack that killed so many people." He added that Britain hoped "that
everything that can be done will be done in order to bring a faster negotiation
process in the Middle East".
President Bush called the bombing a "heinous terrorist attack" and
demanded Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat condemn such acts.
"There is no justification for senseless attacks against innocent civilians,"
Bush said in a statement Friday night.
The statement did not blame Arafat directly for the bombing, but it also did
not include the customary U.S. call for restraint by both sides.

Radical Palestinian group warns Israel against retaliation to bombing
DAMASCUS, June 2 (AFP) - The Democratic Front for the Liberation of
Palestine (DFLP), one of the three main factions of the Palestine Liberation
Organisation (PLO), warned Israel Saturday against an anti-Palestinian
attack following the Tel Aviv suicide bombing.
"We warn (the Jewish state) against a possible military folly by Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon in retaliation for the Tel Aviv operation", said Tayssir
Khaled, a member of the DFLP's political bureau, in a statement.
"A retaliation by Sharon will be met by Palestinian resistance", said Nayef
Hawatmeh's Damascus-based movement, adding that "Sharon's security
promises to the Israelis will not come true as long as Israel's aggression and
occupation continue".
"Israel's withdrawal from the Palestinian territories back to the June 4, 1967
line and the recognition by Israel of the right of the Palestinian people to a
land are the only guarantees of security and stability", the statement added.
The Israeli security cabinet met Saturday morning to decide on what
response to give to the suicide bombing which killed 17 Israelis in Tel Aviv.
After the meeting, cabinet secretary Gideon Saar said Israel will take "all
necessary measures" to defend its citizens.

Israeli protestors try to attack mosque, seven injured in clash with police
TEL AVIV, June 2 (AFP) - Israeli police said they injured seven people in
clashes with enraged Israelis throwing rocks at a mosque near the Tel Aviv
Arab neighborhood of Jaffa, after a deadly suicide bomb blast overnight.
The protestors were searching out Arab Israelis in retaliation for the
beachside suicide bomb blast at a nightclub that killed 17 Israelis, the
bomber and injured more than 100 people.
The crowd of around 200 to 300 people, waving Israeli flags, threw rocks at
the Hassan Beq mosque and attacked television crews.
The police arrived late and acted, at first, with restraint before dispersing the
crowd, witnesses said.
Police did clash with sections of the crowd, during the course of which,
seven people were lightly injured, including three journalists. Twenty people
were arrested.
Earlier, around two hundred people gathered in front of the Israeli defence
ministry in Jerusalem, where the government's security cabinet was meeting
following the explosion.
The protestors called for revenge against the Palestinians.
"If the government does not decide to strike back immmediately, its days are
numbered," said MP Yuri Stern, a member of the rightwing Russian
immigrant party Israel B'Aliya, which has supported Israeli Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon.
The demonstrators applauded Stern's declaration with the cry of "war, war"
and "death to the Arabs."
Israel B'Aliya, which has five seats in parliament, is the largest of three
Russian-immigrant political parties in Israel.
The majority of the victims in the Friday night blast were of Russian origin.
Several hundred people also took to the streets of Bat Yam, a Tel Aviv
suburb, early Saturday in an anti-Arab demonstration, Israeli television
reported.
The demonstrators in Bat Yam yelled "Death to Arabs" and "Arabs Out" as
police moved in to prevent the protest getting out of hand, the television said.

Palestinians call for immediate return of US Mideast envoy
JERUSALEM, June 2 (AFP) - US Mideast envoy William Burns should return
to the region immediatley to help work for a ceasefire after Palestinian leader
Yasser Arafat said he would do "whatever is necessary" to stop the
bloodshed, a senior Palestinian official said Saturday.
"It's really urgent ... that Mr. Burns return to the area immediately," top
peace negotiator Saeb Erakat told Israeli public television.
Erakat said Arafat's statement was "very clear.
"But I believe in order to make this operational, we need to have Mr. Burns,
the American envoy, come back to the region immediately, in order to be
able to put the mechanism and the timeline to implement the Mitchell
recommandations," he said.
The Mitchell committee into the eight months of Israeli-Palestinian violence
issued a report last month calling for an immediate ceasefire and confidence-
building measures with the aim of restarting peace negotiations.
"I am afraid that both sides' relations at this stage (Israeli and Palestinian)
will not able them to move in that direction (to implement the Mitchell
report)," he said, explaining why he believed Burns must return.
"Neither side has a magic stick to start changing things on the ground," he
said.
Burns, recently appointed US assistant secretary of state for Near East and
North African affairs, made his first mission to the region last week, meeting
Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
He then urged Arafat to follow in Sharon's steps by announcing a ceasefire.
Asked by Israeli television why Arafat had waited so long before declaring his
support for a ceasefire on Saturday, Erakat said it was not the right time to
"fingerpoint and assign blame."

PREVIOUS QUESTION:
A question has come up regarding the three days and three nights Our
Lord spent in the grave. I recall having read, somewhere, that He was
crucified on Thursday, and not Friday but have forgotten where I read
it. Perhaps you, or someone on the list, can help me out. It would be
appreciated. Thank you and Praise the Lord!
God Bless you. Charlie Baker.
Note: I did not write the following, the author and his website are at the
bottom. Hope this helps!

GLENN M. MILLER'S ANSWER
Good question..
...well, is it 'after' 3 days or 'on' the 3rd day?!
(created Nov 20, 1997)
Somebody wrote in a question about a PREVIOUS question I tried to answer (my
original replies are in italic):
QUESTION: This comes from a list of reasons
why humanists don't believe the Bible. I picked up their document from
America On-Line. It is also a question I've had, but have never had
answered. Jesus said he was going to be in the earth (buried) for three days
and three nights. If he died on Friday and rose on Sunday morning, how is
this three days and three nights.
ANSWER: This is one of the easier ones...the
Jews counted PART of a day or night as a WHOLE day or nite, so part of
Friday, all of Sat, part of Sun would be 'three days and three nights'--it
was a Hebrew idiom of the day...
We do the same thing of course...if I say I
worked at the office all day, 'all day' Normally doesn't mean 24 hours...it
means most of the daylight hours or whatever...
This fits with the other predictions that
says 'on the third day'...
[at this point, the NEW questioner asks:]
Sir, first of all, it seems that your
example is not a very precise one. You have stated: "if I say I worked at
the office all day, 'all day' Normally doesn't mean 24 hours". Although it
is right, but it has a very simple reason for it... Tradition. No office
works for 24 hours a day. Thus a "full day" with reference to an office,
normally implies "Office Hours". Like wise, if while talking about a Cricket
Match, someone says: "A whole day's play was lost due to rain"... The "Whole
Day" with reference to a Cricket match would only mean six hours' play.
Thus, the meaning and implication of the
phrases "Full Day", "Whole Day" and the word "Day", can and normally does
change with a change in the whatever it has been used with reference to. For
instance, if I say: "I stayed in America, for three days and three nights",
now the word "day" is being used here in the absolute sense. Thus, one day
and one night, should be a full circle. Dont you think so?
Then again, you have stated: "..the Jews
counted PART of a day or night as a WHOLE day or nite".
My question with regard to this is: What is
the source of this information about the referred Jewish tradition? Is it
the Classical Jewish Literature? Is it the Bible itself? Is it Josephus? I
hope you would appreciate that this is necessary for me to know because
without it, I dont know how can I be sure about it?
I await your reply
XXXXX
PS: Furthermore, I would like to stress that
when we say, for instance: "24 hours a day"... the word "day" here expands
to include "day" and "night".. But when we say "22 nights and 23 days" here
the word "day" does not include "nights".
Thus I think linguistically, "3 days and 3
nights" must include at least "Three" full or part days and "Three" full or
part nights, separately. Three part days and only "Two" nights, it seems,
cannot be termed as "Three Days and Three Nights". Please clarify.
I replied...
It is important to recognize first off, that the issue of "Don't you think
so?" needs to be answered definitively 'no'...Idiomatic expressions in other
cultures don't have to make ANY sense to us at all. Our job as readers of
the literature from another culture is to try to understand THEIR idioms,
rather than judge them.
So, with that in mind, let me answer the request above for the data that
supports my original statement ("What is the source of this information
about the referred Jewish tradition?")
Although I cannot list it all, let me give the main references available.
Let me cite data from three sources: the OT, the Rabbinix, and one NT
passage.
1. The OT data (to show that 'on the third day' = 'after three days')
Gen 42.16: "And he put them all in custody
for three days. 18 On the third day, Joseph said to them, "Do this and you
will live, for I fear God" and they are released ON that day (from the
context of verses 25-26). In this case the 'for three days' meant only 'into
the third day'
1 Kings 20.29: "For seven days they camped
opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. " In this
case we have 'for seven days' meant only 'into the seventh day'.
2 Chr 10.5: "And he said to them, 'Return to
me again in three days" (NAS) with verse 12: "So Jeroboam and all the people
came to Rehoboam on the third day as the king had directed, saying, 'Return
to me on the third day." In this case 'in three days' is equivalent to 'on
the third day'.
Esther 4.16: "Go, gather together all the
Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days,
night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will
go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I
perish.'" And then in 5.1: "On the third day Esther put on her royal robes
and stood in the inner court of the palace, in front of the king's hall. "
In this case, "on the third day" is equivalent to "for three days, night or
day".
1 Samuel 30.12: "He ate and was revived, for
he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three
nights. 13 David asked him, "To whom do you belong, and where do you come
from?" He said, "I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite. My master
abandoned me when I became ill three days ago. " In this case "for three
days and three nights' somehow was fulfilled when his master left him 'three
days ago'.
"Thus, the Old Testament gives the picture
that the expressions 'three days,' 'the third day,' and 'three days and
three nights' are used to signify the same period of time." [NT:CALC:73]
2. The Rabbinical literature also manifests this idiomatic range:
Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah, tenth in the
descent from Ezra was very specific: "A day and a night are an Onah ['a
portion of time'] and the portion of an Onah is as the whole of it"
[J.Talmud, Shabbath 9.3 and b.Talmud, Pesahim 4a]
This understanding was used in the numerous
correlations between Jonah 1.17 ('in the belly of the fish for three days
and three nights') and the OT passages cited above [e.g. Mid.Rabbath on
Genesis 56 (on 22.4); Genesis 91.7 (on 42.17-18)].
3. There is one NT passage that indicates this Jewish idiom.
Matt 27.63: ""Sir," they said, "we remember
that while he was still alive that deceiver said, `After three days I will
rise again.' 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the
third day. " Note that 'after three days' was somehow equivalent to 'until
the third day' (not 'until the fourth day').
This data should demonstrate the rough equivalence of the NT phrases.
Hope this helps,
Glenn M. Miller

From: "John"

--------
About the 3 days and 3 nights.
This is one of the difficult questions of the NT record of the death of
Christ.
It seems that the synoptics (Matthew, Mark, Luke) picture the death of
Christ on Wednesday and the Resurrection on Sunday thus 3 days and Three
nights in the tomb. The synoptic references to this period all clearly state
"3days and 3 Nights".
John on the other hand simply says "3 days" and it seems in John that the
Crucifixion was Friday (hence Good Friday) and the resurrection on Sunday.
John specifically says that the Sabbath following the Crucifixion was a
"High sabbath", a technical phrase meaning not only was it a Sabbath but it
was also a special holy Day, in this case Passover. Thus it was doubly
sacred and a "high Sabbath".
John presumably feels the 3 days are fully accounted for by the normal
Jewish way of Reckoning in which a part of a day is counted as a whole day,
thus Part of Friday, Saturday and Part of Sunday totals 3 days. John never
mentions the "3 nights".
This discrepancy dates even from the OT. I think it is like this: In the
earlier regulations on Passover Passover was allowed to fall on any day of
the week - whatever day it turned out to be according to the Moon. Exodus
seems to reflect this pattern. In the later regulations (Deuteronomy)
Passover was tied to a Sabbath. So the Synoptics refelct Exodus and John
reflects Deuteronomy.
However for general puposes "3 days" is sufficient for the OT prophecies to
be fulfilled. The words of Jesus is another matter.
This all impacts, of course, on which year Christ died. Was it a year in
which Pasover was a Saturday or was it a year in which Passover was a
Thursday?
Scholars have never recongiled this debate.
Johninnz
This discrepancy has been long noted by scholars. And there is no
satisfactort resolution suggested.
It is

Political-Security Cabinet Communique June 2, 2001
1) The Government of Israel sends its condolences to the bereaved
families and its wishes for a speedy recovery to the wounded of
last night's heinous attack.
2) The Government of Israel has determined that the Palestinian
Authority (PA) and Chairman Arafat are engaged in terrorist
activity, encourage it and are inciting to hatred and violence.
The PA has not only violated all the obligations and agreements
to fight the terrorist and incitement infrastructure, but its
members are themselves engaged in terrorism and incitement.
The PA has established in its territory a coalition of terror,
and is attempting to disguise it with words of peace as lip
service to the international community, while continuing to
incite its people to hatred and violence.
The violent Palestinian attack against Israel came after
far-reaching Israeli proposals for peace were rejected.
3) Israel holds the PA responsible for the deterioration and will
draw the security and political conclusions from its conduct.
4) Terrorism is abominable. It is aimed at the indiscriminate
killing of innocent people. Israel calls upon the international
community to take action that will clarify that terrorism has a
political price and that the community of nations does not accept
terrorism as a legitimate means.
Countries and organizations which condone terrorism should not be
acceptable members of the international community.
Terrorism and radicalism are a threat to regional stability.
There is not, and can never be, any compromise with terrorism.
5) Israel will act to protect the lives of its citizens and will
take every necessary step toward this end.
6) Israel has accepted the Mitchell Report and announced a
unilateral cease-fire. Our steps to break this cycle of violence
have not received any comparable response by the PA, but rather
have been answered with increased incitement and heinous acts of
terrorism against Israeli citizens.
7) The people of Israel have demonstrated tenacity and national
unity in this cycle of violence that has been imposed upon us. We
have confronted this challenge, like every other challenge forced
upon us in the past by our enemies, without being deterred by
threats and killings.
8) Israel is a peace-seeking nation, and the State of Israel has
made significant concessions for peace. Only if the Palestinian
Authority puts and end to terrorism and incitement, and takes
action against the terrorist infrastructure in its territory,
including the arrest of terrorists, can it be a partner to the
political process.

Subject: [bprlist] Official Palestinian statement condemns the explosion in Tel-Aviv
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

An Official Palestinian statement condemns the explosion in Tel-Aviv And
demands self restrain and stop escalating violence
[IMRA: The explosion is condemned - not the bomber. There is no clear call
on the Palestinians to cease terror actions. Israel Radio reported this
evening that a Fatah Tanzim official in the West Bank explained that Fatah
will continue the "struggle". The reference in this declaration to the
"Egyptian-Jordanian initiative" is a proposal that negotiations begin with
Israel accepting all the concessions the Barak government offered during the
talks that failed when Arafat rejected them during the waning days of the
Barak administration. The reference to "UN resolutions" - which do not
have the status of "international law" refers, among other things, to the
return of Palestinian refugees to Haifa and the rest of Israel - a demand
rejected by almost the entire spectrum of Israeli politics - including the
radical left "Gush Shalom"]
http://www.wafa.pna.net/EngText/02-06-2001/page002.htm
Ramallah June 2nd Wafa, An official Palestinian statement declares:
The PNA strongly condemns the suicidal explosion that took place last night
in Tel-Aviv, and demands self restrain from all sides, and not to escalate
violence in order not to sabotage the already difficult road to negotiations
to achieve peace between the two nations.
We have declared many times that the Mitchell report and the
Egyptian-Jordanian initiative are a good base to stop hostilities and to
resume negotiations.
In spite of that, Israel is still escalating its aggression against us,
attack us and continue the starving policy against us, using the siege and
blockades beside destroying our infra structure and the daily killing of our
citizens.
We call upon the international community to pressure Israeli to stop
killing, destroying, and starving our people, and to pressure it to accept
resuming negotiations based on the Mitchell report and the
Egyptian-Jordanian initiative and the international law including the UN
resolutions.

Arafat call for cease-fire does not include Islamic forces
Aaron Lerner Date: 2 June 2001
Israel Radio Territories Correspondent Avi Yisachar reported this evening
that Yasser Arafat has issued orders to the "national" forces to cease-fire
rather than to "national and religious" forces. Yisachar noted that the
term "national and religious" would apply to Hamas and Islamic Jihad while
the term "national" alone excludes Islamic military forces.
Yisachar also pointed out that since Arafat's orders were announced there
were a number of attacks in the Gaza Strip against Israeli targets including
Morag, and military positions in Atzmona and Neveh Dekalim.

I have been using this piece of software for almost month now and find that
it offers world-best and world-quality
capabilities in my humble opinion. It helps me to do some serious research
works in biblical prophecy research
as a theological student and it really does produce good results and reports
for my grades. Furthermore, it's
FREE and very user-friendly and full of goodies and the developer is aiming
for more resources to be added
to the program. I don't need to spend a few hundred bucks just to do some
serious research works if I can use
e-Sword for all its fantastic power for my studies. Give it a try and
support them, you will not regret it, anyway
it's FREE but it may cost your online time.
The link is http://www.e-sword.net/.
Another not so complicated one known as the FreeBible also promises some
capabilities but not as good as
e-Sword but definitely good for any lay-person.
The link is http://www.freebible.com/.
Well, that's all folks and have a happy Pentecost day!
Just a faithful servant of LORD Jesus (Adonai Yeshua),
Thomas Ho
