Militarily speaking, would it really "hurt" or "help" Israel, if the U.S.
withdrew military aid. This may be a bit simplistic, but considering
that Israel is basically surrounded on all sides by hostile forces, it
seems to me that Israel [must be and is] quite capable of making better
weapon systems than the U.S. or Russia, in her fight for survival. What
is more dangerous than backing a cat against a wall? No friends. No way
out, but to fight to the death.

GRASS CUTTING BEATS DRIVING IN MAKING AIR POLLUTION

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, May 29, 2001 (ENS) - The air pollution from cutting
grass for an hour with a gasoline powered lawn mower is about the same as
that from a 100 mile automobile ride, according to a new study from Sweden.
The report, which the authors say is the first to compare lawn mower
pollution with auto mileage, recommends using catalytic converters on
mowers.

ILL WINDS CARRY TOXIC DUST

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 31, 2001 (ENS) - Most residents of the parched
southwestern United States accept dust as an unavoidable fact of desert
life. The silty powder that settles from the air on to desktops, beneath
beds, and into noses is viewed by many as nothing worse than a common
annoyance. But, in recent years, dust has gone from being a benign nuisance
to major health hazard, as scientists have discovered harmful chemicals and
microorganisms hitching a ride on the airborne particles.

motion seeking to establish whether it is operating according to
international and local environmental standards.

My reaction & response in protest of such a patently whacked out point of view
is they are assuming I will now shut down my lawnmower.

If I have a farm grade 500 gallon fuel tank delivered today, and set up
regular fuel deliveries, I figure I can continuously run my mower at full
throttle for an extended period...365 daysX24hours=8760hours X 100 mile
equivalent=876,000 equiv car miles, assume average driver at 15,000 miles per
year that equates to 58.4 cars at 15,000 per year from my lawnmower.
265,000,000 population of USA @ 4.2 people per household = 63,095,238
households, @ 2 cars per household = 126,190,476 cars in USA, divided by 58.4
(number of cars my mower equates to) = I need 2,160,795 more people to join me
to equalize lawnmower exhaust to automobile exhaust for the coming year (maybe
I can push/pull the lawnmower with my VW?),
..I forgot where I was going with this...have a great weekend all! SSG

(I will now remove my tongue from my cheek for you all in Palm Beach FLA.)

IDF sending crack units into W. Bank

                  By Amir Oren
                  Ha'aretz Correspondent

The IDF's presence in the West Bank will be beefed up by several special
forces units in order to improve security on the roads, the general staff
decided yesterday.

Some of the teams will operate undercover, lying in ambush for Palestinian
attacks, while others will be high-profile, demonstrating a presence on the
roads. The decision was approved by Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-
Eliezer.

The IDF is also preparing for a possible decision by Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon to launch a new offensive in the territories if the Palestinians do not
respond soon to his unilateral cease-fire.

Yesterday, Sharon spoke with students at the army training college for staff
officers. The speech dealt primarily with his experiences in the Six-Day War
and Yom Kippur War, but he also offered a few comments on the current
situation. And though he reiterated his reasons for declaring the unilateral
cease-fire, many of his listeners got the impression that the cease-fire's end
was near.

Senior army officers said this week that the cease-fire was merely an
"operational halt" in an ongoing war - essentially a breathing space designed
to let both sides regroup before the next battle. They also expressed fear
that following the deaths of four settlers this week, the danger of a revenge
attack by settlers had grown. The IDF, they said, has not succeeded in
protecting the settlers from armed Palestinians, and this failure has led to an
erosion of the restraint that characterized the settlers during the first eight
months of the conflict.

The IDF is worried about increased friction with the Palestinians as a result
of Faisal Husseini's funeral today.

In a report to Ben-Eliezer yesterday, the IDF noted that 18 Israelis were
killed in the territories this month. Since the conflict began, only November
has registered a worse toll, with 32 Israelis killed.

Since the outbreak of the Intifada on September 29, 2000, 94 Israelis
(including two foreign workers from Romania) have been killed: 61 civilians
and 33 soldiers. In the last two months, however, almost all the deaths have
been civilian. Even the two soldiers who died were killed in drive-by shootings
rather than in the course of army operations.

In addition to the deaths, 696 Israelis have been wounded since the start of
the Intifada.

There is disagreement within the security services regarding the number of
Palestinian deaths: The Shin Bet security service and the government
coordinator in the territories say 484, while the IDF's operations directorate
says 438. An estimated 8,500 to 10,000 Palestinians have been injured.

Distrust, Anger and Frustration!

Those three words come close to describing the feelings of the average
Israeli today.

We watch each day as the world is fed a diet of mistruth and lies from
the International News Media, and the Palestinian Leaders seem to be
unable to speak a

single word of truth concerning the crisis here in Israel. Yesterday
two Israeli women were killed by Palestinian Terrorist as they drove
on our highways in Samaria. A bomb went off out side a High School in
an attempt to kill as many Israeli children as possible. Bombs are
going off in our cities daily, in our public places and hardly a
mention of it on the News. A Palestinian Sniper near Gaza killed a
63-year-old Israeli man, once again while driving on our highways. On
the Tunnel Road near Gillo (where I have been shot at twice) a man was
wounded and in serious condition.

In Jerusalem yesterday I noticed once again that the streets had less
than half the amount of people one would expect to see on a Thursday
afternoon. I went to the Western Wall to pray yesterday at 1:30 PM and
it was nearly empty of praying Jews. So we might want to ask the
question who is being imprisoned? As for the three words at the top of
this article.

1.. Mistrust “The Israelis no longer trust their Government to
provide them with the security they must have to function as a normal
people. They are asking the question, what Shimon Peres and Yossi
Beilin are doing in this Government, two men who are considered
Traitors by most Israelis.

b.. Anger, we are very angry at Sharon for not keeping his word to
give us the protection he promised, and for not going after the enemy
who is killing us every day all over Israel. Angry for not calling an
end to his cease fire, Angry for his restraints on the IDF and putting
our sons and daughters in harms way for the sake of the international
community.

c.. Frustration, after going through the selling and giving away of
God´s promises to His people, by the Barak Government. Frustration
with what seems to be an inability to stop the lies and murderous acts
of an enemy who has but one goal, the destruction of Israel.

The Palestinians say they want the Jewish Settlements out of their
West Bank, we say this is our land and it is not the west bank, but
Samaria and Judea. They say we can´t live there, but they can live in
our cities and towns with us.

It is now known to the world or I might say to anyone who wants to
know. Yessar Arafat has but one goal to destroy Israel, he wants no
peace, and is not interested in any peace. He is a Terrorist, plain
and simple. He is the world leading murder of Jews today. He is on a
mission, its called Islamic Jihad. Shalom, jerry golden

And on the 50th Day
What Pentecost means--and not just to Pentecostals.

http://opinionjournal.com/taste/?id=95000560

BY EDITH BLUMHOFER
Friday, June 1, 2001 12:01 a.m. EDT

On the drive between my health club and my office, I pass a large Presbyterian
church. A sign on the lawn this week commands attention: "Celebrate Pentecost
on June 3." I wonder what those words mean to other passersby. How and why
does one celebrate Pentecost? And why is the sign in front of the First
Presbyterian Church instead of the First Pentecostal Church across town?

The historian in me suggests some answers. As to the first question: Pentecost
was the name assigned to the ancient Jewish Feast of Weeks, an event 50 days
after Passover when the faithful presented the first fruits of the corn
harvest to God. (It eventually came to celebrate the revelation of the 10
Commandments to Moses on Mount Sinai.) For Christians, Pentecost marks the
50th day after Resurrection Sunday, when the Holy Spirit descended on the
Apostles, an event recorded in Acts 2.

Curious signs on that day made visible the Spirit's presence. The New
Testament refers to speaking in tongues, cloves of fire and a rushing wind, as
well as to apparently raucous behavior and power-packed preaching. Christians
traditionally regard Pentecost as the birthday of the church, the day on which
Christ empowered his followers to carry his gospel to the ends of the earth.

In its early years, the church used the word Pentecost to designate the entire
season between Easter and Pentecost Sunday. Unlike the solemn season of Lent
that precedes Easter, Pentecost is a season of joy. In the early church, this
meant that fasting gave way to feasting, prayers were said standing rather
than kneeling and Alleluias were sung more often.

Today Pentecost is part of the rhythm of the church year, a time of beginnings
and renewal. On Pentecost Sunday special readings, prayers and hymns remind
the church of its mission and its source.
The second question seems more puzzling. Why aren't Pentecostals inviting the
church to remember Pentecost? That, too, has a historical answer.
Pentecostalism arose at the beginning of the 20th century among people who
believed that formality stifled Christian vitality. They disliked
denominations because bureaucracies "quenched the Spirit," and so they created
thousands of independent gospel tabernacles and Pentecostal assemblies. Many
later networked to form denominations like the Church of God in Christ, the
United Pentecostal Church and the Assemblies of God.

Their adherents drew inspiration from an itinerant named Charles Parham, a
Kansan who concluded (among other things) that in a proper "apostolic faith"
the events of Acts 2 should be repeated. Every Christian should receive a
baptism with the Holy Spirit, and every such baptism would be manifested by
speaking in tongues. Parham proclaimed that this restoration had begun on Jan.
1, 1901, among his band of followers in Topeka.

Parham's views caught fire a few years later, in 1906 in Los Angeles, where a
run-down building on Azusa Street became hallowed ground for growing numbers
of Americans who sought baptism with the Holy Spirit. These "personal
Pentecosts" were thought to prepare recipients for evangelism. The message of
"Pentecost restored" spread rapidly around the world, carried by eager
messengers who believed they were preparing the way for Christ's imminent
return.

In the years since, Pentecostalism has grown exponentially, especially in
Latin America, Korea and parts of Africa. Dedicated to "taking God at His
word" and to realizing the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, Pentecostals
focus on Hebrews 1:8: "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever."
They celebrate and evangelize, practice spiritual warfare, and pursue signs
and wonders, but most pay only cursory attention to Pentecost's annual
remembrance.
After all, when one has "Pentecost in soul" (as a favorite early Pentecostal
song put it), one hardly needs to follow the timetable of "dead denominational
churches" (a favorite early Pentecostal epithet). An early historian on
American Pentecostalism captured the outlook well: "This movement has no
history. It leaps the intervening years, crying 'Back to Pentecost.' "

And so Catholics and Protestants attuned to the church calendar will know that
June 3 is Pentecost Sunday. But the average Pentecostal may not, since any
Sunday might be a personal Pentecost.

Ms. Blumhofer is director of the Institute for the Study of Evangelicals at
Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.

   6. WAGNER WILL NOT BE HEARD AT ISRAEL FESTIVAL
   7. IRAN IS A DANGEROUS PLACE

1. U.S. "ANGRY" AT ARAFAT - AND HOLDING UP AID TO ISRAEL
President Moshe Katzav said he does not think that Israel's ceasefire can
last more than another few days. However, it has been reported that Prime
Minister Sharon has no plans to begin using force at least until after he
returns from Europe in the middle of next week. Despite the increase in
deadly terrorism against Israel, which claimed 18 victims in the month of
May, Israeli officials note with satisfaction the international benefits
that have accompanied Israel's gesture. Foreign governments appreciate
Israel's restraint, while at the same time, Ha'aretz notes that "within the
U.S. administration, there is growing anger over both Arafat's refusal to
declare a cease-fire and the involvement of Fatah members in terror
attacks..."

Israel has in fact informed the U.S. that it accepts the Mitchell Report in
full. This was confirmed last night by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who
told his Likud party colleagues that if the Palestinians agree to a
ceasefire, construction in Yesha would be allowed only in places that are
already built up. Construction will not be permitted beyond these areas,
even in areas within the towns' other zoned areas. Militarily, however,
the IDF has redoubled its forces, including elite units, along the roads of
Judea, Gaza, and Samaria. Armored personnel carriers are now stationed in
additional points, particularly along routes on which terrorist attacks
have occurred. For the time being, however, no initiated actions will be
taken, and Israel is not implementing a policy of targeting and killing
terrorist leaders.

Despite the above, the Bush Administration may be reneging on $800 million
in aid promised by the U.S. to Israel last year. The grant was promised at
the end of ex-President Clinton's term in office, in compensation for the
IDF withdrawal from southern Lebanon and to aid in developing defenses
against Iraqi and Iranian missiles. President Moshe Katzav raised the
issue with U.S. President Bush and Secretary of State Powell, but it has
been reported that the Americans "tried to evade the topic," and that the
Israelis sensed that the aid would not be arriving any time soon. Just
last week, Iraq tested its new surface-to-surface missile.

2. MOLEDET VOTES TO QUIT GOVERNMENT - WITH A BUT
In addition to the above vague international-arena gains, Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon's policy of restraint and his consent to a construction freeze
in Yesha also appear to be netting him political problems back at
home. The Moledet party has decided to adopt its leader Tourism Minister
Rehavam Ze'evi's proposal to quit the government, exactly because of these
policies. However, Moledet will not implement the decision unless its two
partners, Tekumah and Yisrael Beiteinu, also agree. The leader of the
latter, Minister Avigdor Lieberman, has already stated that he wants to
give Sharon more time.

Background: Before the 1999 elections, Moledet and its two MKs - Ze'evi
and Rabbi Benny Elon - joined up with Tekumah (former NRP MKs Chanan
Porat
and Tzvi Hendel) and with Herut (former Likud MKs Benny Begin and Michael
Kleiner) to form the National Union party. The new party won four Knesset
seats, held by Ze'evi, Kleiner, Elon, and Hendel (Begin and Porat had
resigned from the Knesset). Kleiner later split off, and the party's 3 MKs
joined up with Avigdor Lieberman's 4-man Yisrael Beiteinu party to form the
7-seat National Union-Yisrael Beiteinu faction.

3. YESHA ACTIONS
Residents of Yesha have begun to make their presence felt. Hundreds of
Jews clashed with soldiers yesterday at the site of Gilad Zar's Tuesday
murder, but in the end managed to bring a caravan to the site; they have
named the place Mitzpeh Gilad [the Gilad Overlook]. In northern Efrat, as
well, the municipality has placed three caravans on Tamar Hill; a
neighborhood there has been in the planning stages for several years, but
remained uninhabited until yesterday. Outside Kiryat Arba and elsewhere,
Jewish residents blocked the road to Palestinian traffic.

Terrorists opened fire at two Israeli cars south of Hevron this morning; no
one was hurt. When the local Security Officer arrived on the scene, the
Arabs opened fire on him as well. He and the soldiers there opened fire at
the Arab attackers as they drove off, but the latter managed to
escape... Several mortar shells were fired this morning at the Jewish
communities in Gaza; no one was hurt... Palestinians attacked an IDF
position in Rafiach, near the Egyptian-Israeli border. No one was hurt,
and IDF soldiers returned sporadic fire... Last night, a soldier was
moderately wounded when he was shot in the back by Arab terrorists; they
were standing on an overpass between Ramallah and Jerusalem and shot at
the
car as it passed by...

Fareh Bito, a 55-year-old Arab from the Palestinian Authority who aided
Israel, was murdered in Bethlehem last night. He helped mediate in the
sale of lands that later became part of the new Jerusalem neighborhood of
Har Homa.

4. HUSSEINI FUNERAL TAKES OVER JERUSALEM, BUT NOT TEMPLE
MOUNT
Thousands of Arabs waving Palestinian flags essentially took over parts of
northern Jerusalem this afternoon, during the funeral procession of Feisal
Husseini. The police closed off the French Hill junction to all Jewish
traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian, to allow the Arabs to
pass. Earlier, Prime Minister refused to allow Arafat to enter Jerusalem
for the funeral; Arafat eulogized Husseini, his political rival and the PLO
Jerusalem chief, in Ramallah. The funeral procession path leads from
Ramallah to northern Jerusalem, then to PLO headquarters in Orient House,
and then via Herod's Gate (on the northern wall of the Old City) to the
burial spot astride the Temple Mount where his father and grandfather are
buried.

Noam Federman, a Kach member who lives in Hevron, appealed to the
Supreme
Court today against Husseini's burial so near the Temple Mount - Judaism's
holiest site on earth. Federman maintains that Israeli law stipulates that
a burial may only take place in a cemetery that is recognized as such, and
in any event not in an archaeological site such as the Temple Mount. The
three-justice panel - Dorner, Matza, and Chief Justice Barak - rejected the
suit, explaining that the suit was filed too late for it to be properly
reviewed; that the coffin was already on its way to the site; and that
Husseini will technically be buried not on the Temple Mount, but in his
family plot precisely adjacent to it. Temple Mount expert Yehuda Etzion
explained to Arutz-7's Yosef Zalmanson today that the burial chamber, above
the Hasmonean Tunnels, has a window that opens onto the Mount.

The succession fight has already begun. Three Fatah seniors have already
indicated their intention to vie for the spot vacated by Feisal Husseini at
the helm of the PLO for Jerusalem affairs: Sari Nusaiba, Ziad Abu Ziad,
and Ahmed Anim.

5. WAS HUSSEINI A "MODERATE?"
Despite widespread talk on Israeli and world-wide media about Husseini's
"moderacy," and despite the publication today of condolence
announcements
by left-wing parties for Husseini, the following selection of quotes by the
deceased Husseini presents a different picture:

"[This is] an expression of our feeling about the occupation; I have no
problem with the deed." - Husseini commenting on the murder of an Israeli
security guard in eastern Jerusalem last November.

"Taking Israeli citizenship is something that can only be defined as
treason... Palestinians who have Israeli citizenship don't have a place in
our state. If they want rights, they should go to the Israelis to give them
these rights." - Husseini speaking to a Christian/Moslem conference in
Ramallah, August 2000.

"We must have two capitals in an open and free-access city. Nothing
can
convince us why the Old City should not be under Palestinian control. It is
not logical for the Israelis to say they want control of the Old City." -
Husseini speaking to 'The Center for Policy Analysis on Palestine' , April
2000.

"We will forcefully open up our borders with Jordan and Egypt, which are
currently controlled by the Israeli army. There will be violent
confrontation and death, but this time on both sides. Are the Israelis more
numerous and better equipped? Yes, but the superiority of us Palestinians
lies in the fact that we are willing to lay down our lives, whereas for
them every death is a tragedy that society cannot bear." --Husseini, quoted
in Le Nouvel Observateur, August 1998.

The quotes were collected by journalist David Bedein of Israel Resource
News Agency:
www.israelbehindthenews.com

6. WAGNER WILL NOT BE HEARD AT ISRAEL FESTIVAL
The compositions of the noted anti-Semitic German composer Richard
Wagner,
who is said to have set the musical backdrop for the rise of Nazism, will
not be played at the Israel Festival this year. The Festival management
came to the decision Wednesday, after a long and intense controversy. The
Berlin Philharmonic and its conductor Daniel Birnbaum have also consented,
and will perform pieces by Schumann and Stravinsky instead.

7. IRAN IS A DANGEROUS PLACE
Iran may well be the world champion in traffic fatalities. Over 17,000
Iranians were killed on the roads last year, a 10% increase over the year
before. Some 5,000,000 cars travel Iran's roads. For the sake of
comparison, the number of cars in Israel is less than 2 million -
considered the highest road density in the world - while the number of
annual fatalities is somewhat over 500.

*** UN passes religion resolution

UNITED NATIONS (AP) - With the recent demolition of two ancient
Buddha statues in Afghanistan, the U.N. General Assembly passed its
first resolution protecting religious sites. The resolution, passed
Thursday, calls on countries to adopt measures aimed at preventing
acts or threats of violence against religious sites and to promote a
culture of tolerance and respect for them. "Today is a turning
point. The international community has come to take a stand," said
Rabbi Arthur Schneier, founder and president of the Appeal of
Conscience Foundation, which is devoted to religious freedom and
international human rights issues. Schneier was flanked by other
senior religious leaders who say desecration of holy sites
continues.

*** China's army practices taking island

BEIJING (AP) - Large-scale Chinese war games that include a practice
invasion of an island near Taiwan are a warning not to underestimate
Beijing's determination to use force to rein in Taiwan, state media
said Friday. Taiwan's government said the drills code named
"Liberation One," which start this month on Dongshan island off the
southeastern Chinese coast, opposite Taiwan, were routine and no
cause for alarm. But they will be China's first large-scale war
games since the election of Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian last
May and will be among the largest ever by its 2.5 million member
People's Liberation Army, the state-run Beijing Morning Post said.
Nearly 10,000 troops have been massed for the exercises, including
missile units, amphibious tanks, submarines, warships, marine units
and Russian-made Su-27 aircraft - among the most modern weapons in
China's growing arsenal, the newspaper said.

Research fish engineered to have death-wish

Scientists in Pennsylvania have created a fish which swims towards
danger - not away from it.

The mutant baby zebra-fish have bad connections in their brains which
make them react in the opposite way to other members of the species.

The fish, nicknamed 'space cadets' by the researchers, are said to
prove a single type of nerve cell controls the urge to get away.

Giant nerve cells at the back of their brains control the escape
response and neighbouring nerves feed into them through badly-wired
extensions.

So when researchers prod the fish they spin around and swim towards
the stimulus, according to the journal Nature.

The fish were created so the genes behind growth and development can
be identified by observing the defects they cause.

Michael Granato, who is working on the project with colleagues at the
University of Pennsylvania, said: "It's a clear example of one cell
type involved in a simple behaviour."

Islamic Jihad Promise More Attacks in Israel
The Islamic Jihad movement vowed at a rally in the Gaza Strip on Friday to
continue suicide bomb attacks against Israel, and told Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon to "go to hell".

Abdallah al-Shami, a leader of the militant Palestinian movement, said such
attacks had forced Sharon to announce a limited unilateral ceasefire and
urge Palestinians to stop shooting after eight months of violence.

"Our resistance and our martyrdom operation led him (Sharon) to this way of
thinking," Shami told about 2,000 supporters. "Go to hell Sharon, you and
your state, and your settlers. The Jerusalem brigade (of Islamic Jihad) will
strike everywhere and you will not be protected by your helicopters and
missiles," he said.

Masked Islamic Jihad activists burned models of Jewish settlements and
Israeli buses. Some carried mock missile and mortar bomb launchers.
Others fired in the air from rifles. The Palestinians regard Sharon's ceasefire
as a propaganda ploy and accuse Israeli forces of continuing to attack.

Arafat Blames Israel for Husseini's Death
Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat yesterday blamed Israel for the
death of leading Palestinian politician Faisal Husseini, claiming that his fatal
heart attack in Kuwait on Wednesday night was caused by tear gas fired at
him and Arab MKs during a May 15 Nakba Day protest.

"There is no doubt that the [tear gas] canisters thrown at him by the Israeli
forces led to his death," Arafat told reporters in Belgium. "It is a great loss for
the Palestinian people."

He said the death of Husseini, who was the PLO representative in Jerusalem
and a PA minister, should increase determination to re-establish a just
peace in the Middle East. Jerusalem Post

Jews Meet in Spain to Debate European Renewal
European Jewish leaders met yesterday in a land that expelled their
ancestors and began exploring ways of reviving their culture and religion after
centuries of persecution on the continent.

Some 700 people from 44 countries attended the three-day conference of the
European Council of Jewish Communities, focused on renewing Judaism in
the countries of the former Soviet bloc and making European Jewry as vibrant
as in Israel and the United States.

“Not only Israel and Brooklyn are Jewish places," said Jakob Finci, head of
the 300-strong Jewish community in Sarajevo, Bosnia, who spoke to
delegates about strengthening Jewish culture in small communities. He
noted that during the Bosnian war, Jews from all over Europe and the world
rallied to their aid. "Now it's our turn to help the others," he said. Jews are
estimated to number between 1.5 million and 3 million in Europe today.

Russia Focuses On Upgrade of Libyan Weapons
Russia appears close to signing a deal for the upgrade of Soviet-era weapons
in Libya's military. The two countries are proceeding with contract
negotiations that would modernize a range of Libyan aircraft, tanks and
armored vehicles. Officials would not disclose the extent of the contract.

Delegations from the two countries met last month and agreed on a schedule
for the proposed of upgrade. Officials said some of the programs are meant
to begin within the next year.

Officials said Moscow does not plan to sell new weapons to Libya. That
remains under an arms ban by the United Nations imposed more than a
decade ago.

Moscow had been supplying Libya with weapons in the 1970s and 1980s.
But UN sanctions ended the supply and brought on financial problems for
Tripoli. MENL

Iran Reports Success In Test Of New Missle
Iran has reported the first successful test of its solid-fuel surface-to-surface
missile. The test was that of the Fateh-110 surface-to-surface guided
missile. The missile is said to be a solid-fuel rocket that has achieved high
accuracy.

"Fateh-110, a super-modern surface-to-surface missile, functions with
combined solid-fuel, is able to cause great damage and finds targets with
accuracy," state-owned Teheran radio said on Thursday. "The missile is
classified among Iran's most efficient missiles."

Western intelligence sources said Iran has for years been struggling with the
development of a solid-fuel missile. They said North Korean missile aid to
Teheran was unable to solve the difficulties.

The Teheran-based Islamic Republic News Agency added that Fateh rocket
was designed and developed by the Iranian army. The rocket was termed as
"one of the most effective weapons" of the Iranian military. MENL

Body of Pope John XXIII on Display for Pentecost Sunday
Today in the Holy See Press Office, Cardinal Virgilio Noe, archpriest of St.
Peter's Basilica, presided at a conference to explain the new resting place in
the Vatican Basilica for Blessed Pope John XXIII. He also spoke of the papal
Mass on Pentecost Sunday, June 3, when Pope John's body, in a new
casket, will be in St. Peter's Square, after which it will be transferred to the
basilica's Altar of the Confession for viewing by the public.

The cardinal recalled that Pope John XXIII died exactly 38 years ago - on
Pentecost Sunday, June 3, 1963 - and has been buried in the Vatican
Grottoes, beneath the basilica, since June 6. When his body was exhumed
for verification earlier this year - in preparation for his new resting place - it
was found to be incorrupt. It was thus felt that a new casket was needed
which would allow the faithful to better view the "good Pope." ewtn

16 killed, at least 70 injured in suicide bomb attack at popular Tel Aviv

Sixteen people have been killed and around 70 injured - most of them
teenagers - in a suicide bomb attack close to midnight Friday at a popular
nightclub near the Tel Aviv Dolphinarium.

Thirty-six of the injured were taken to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, eight of
them in serious condition. A further 19 of the injured were evacuated to
Wolfson Hospital in Holon, three of them in serious condition.

Another 12 of the injured were admitted to Tel Hashomer Hospital, one in
critical condition, three in serious condition, two in moderate condition and
the remainder with light injuries. Ten of the injured were admitted to Beilinson
Hospital, two of them in moderate condition.

According to eye-witness accounts, the bomber mingled with a big group of
young people waiting to enter the Infinity nightclub and then blew himself up.
"There was a huge blast and then I saw people flying through the air," said
one eyewitness, who was in a nearby nightclub.

Police closed off the area for fear there might be other bombs in the vicinity.
Channel One television reported that some 30 ambulances had arrived at the
scene of the attack to evacuate the injured.

The Dolphinarium is part of a beachside boardwalk area with many
restaurants, nightclubs and coffee shops, which are typically crowded on
Friday night.

Talking from the scene of the attack, Police Commissioner Shlomo
Aharonishki said that, "We have to continue to operate on the ground in an
effort to cut down the number of attacks as much as possible. Even though
we have succeeded many times (in preventing attacks), this time it is very
bad. The terrorists want to strike in every possible place, to break our
morale."

Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai, who also arrived at the scene of the attack, said,
"This just proves that the whole country is the frontline."

Transportation Minister Ephraim Sneh said nothing was worse than such an
attack on Israeli youth. "We need to change the rules of the gamem" he
added.

Subject: [bprlist] Europe throws sinking Arafat a £37m lifeline
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

Europe throws sinking Arafat a £37m lifeline

Special report: Israel and the Middle East

                          Ian Black in Brussels
                          Friday June 1, 2001
                          The Guardian

The Palestinian Authority is to get 60m euros (£37m) emergency aid to stave
off economic collapse as the European Union steps up efforts to play a role
in the search for Middle East peace.

In an agreement signed with the European commission yesterday the
Palestinians agreed to a strictly controlled austerity budget in return for
direct aid to pay salaries and keep basic services going.

Israel's blockade of the West Bank and Gaza Strip and its refusal to pay tax
revenues to the authority have brought it to the brink of financial collapse,
Brussels says, and that is a recipe for more extremism and violence.

Speaking after talks with the Belgian prime minister, Guy Verhofstadt, the
Palestinian Authority president, Yasser Arafat, said there would be further
Israeli attacks and called on Europeans to play a bigger role in the region.

Mr Verhofstadt said he would push for the EU to do more when he took over
the union's rotating presidency in July.

The EU wants to use its influence as the main trade partner with Israel and
the biggest aid donor to the Palestinians. But the member states are still
divided on how far to go without undermining the US.

Ariel Sharon, the Israeli prime minister, is due to visit Brussels, Berlin and
Paris next week: another sign of Europe's growing importance to both parties
to the conflict

"The Israelis are increasingly nervous, but also interested that the EU is
starting to get its act together," an official said.

National customs authorities are looking closely at Israel's allegedly
exporting goods produced in the occupied territories as being Israeli made,
to take advantage of reduced tariffs.

Romano Prodi, president of the commission, and Chris Patten, the external
relations commissioner, told mr Arafat that they were determined to do what
they could to help.

The EU has given strong backing to the Mitchell committee
recommendations to Israel and the Palestinians. Javier Solana, the union's
foreign policy chief, was a member of the body.

The report called for an immediate halt to violence, followed by confidence-
building measures, including a freeze on Jewish settlements and the
resumption of security cooperation and peace talks.

Palestinian leaders endorsed the whole report but Israel has approved only
part, saying it is unwilling to accept a freeze on settlement construction.

EU officials said the 60m euros would be released in installments after
confirmation by the IMF that the Palestinians had put in place a proper
austerity budget.

This reflects the suspicion that large amounts of money have been lining the
pockets of Mr Arafat's senior associates.

The EU insists that salary and pension payments must be controlled by the
Palestinian finance ministry, not by security agencies or powerful individuals.

Mr Patten urged the authority to pass a law on the independence of the
judiciary and to stop using the fast-track "security courts" which have
executed several people on charges of collaboration with Israel.

Mr Verhofstadt said he would support the Palestinian demand for observers
to be sent to the Middle East if the Mitchell report could be fully
implemented. But Israel and the US have both resisted calls for international
observers to protect Palestinian civilians.

Subject: [bprlist] A Crucial Crossroads for the President - Bill Koenig
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2001 18:50:04 -0400
--------
A Crucial Crossroads for the President - Bill Koenig

                   June 1, 2001

President George W. Bush is at a very crucial crossroads as the leader of
the United States. Does he stop the U.S. participation in the Israel land
giveaway, or does he continue to participate? Either decision will have great
implications.

The President had hoped the U.S. would become a facilitator only in the
ongoing talks between Israel and the Palestinians and the Syrians. He
closed down the White House Middle East Envoy´s office and asked the CIA
to quit moderating the dialogue between the Israeli and Palestinian police
forces.

Then the European Union and Russians both expressed interest in becoming
more involved, and the leaders of both Egypt and Jordan came to
Washington to ask the President to become more active.

The Israeli and Palestinian fighting intensified even further, and the rhetoric
from Syria, Iraq and Iran increased, raising the level of concern. Suddenly
and urgently, the United States found itself back into the middle of the
Middle East mess.

Last week, the U.S.-sponsored Mitchell Report was issued, with President
Bush and Secretary of State Colin Powell both voicing approval of its
content.

A few days later, it was announced that two people would be selected as
American envoys to the Middle East.

The President stated he intended to nominate William Burns to be Assistant
Secretary of State for the Near East and to be one of the envoys. Burns, the
U.S. Ambassador to Jordan since 1998, is in the region speaking to various
leaders about how to bring Israelis and Palestinians back to the negotiating
table.

Additionally, the Israeli news service, Ha´aretz, reported that the American
government will continue to hold talks with both Palestinian and Israeli teams
in the coming days, in an attempt to hammer out a timetable for the
application of the Mitchell Report.

Last Friday, the Bush Administration nominated Daniel Kurtzer as the next
U.S. Ambassador to Israel. (On November 6, 1997, the United States Senate
confirmed Daniel C. Kurtzer, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service,
as U.S. Ambassador to Egypt.)

To complicate matters even more, the reform and conservative Jews, who
make up 85 percent of American Jewry, have come out in favor of the
President´s “pro-land-giveaway” nomination for Ambassador to Israel, Daniel
Kurtzer, while many other Jews and Christians were against this position.
(Refer to NewsWatch of May 27, 2001.)

As a reminder, Pope John Paul II stated on May 6, in Damascus, "It is time
to return to the principles of international legality: the banning of acquisition
of territory by force, the right of peoples to self-determination, respect for the
resolutions of the United Nations, and the Geneva convention."

In other words, the Pope is asking Israel to give up their land. The Pope also
recently called for lasting peace (which isn't scriptural).

Furthermore, this is the same Pope who signed an agreement on February
15, 2000 with the Palestinians, stating the following:

An equitable solution for the issue of Jerusalem, based on international
resolutions, is fundamental for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East,
and that unilateral decisions and actions altering the specific character and
status of Jerusalem are morally and legally unacceptable; Calling, therefore,
for a special statute for Jerusalem, internationally guaranteed, which should
safeguard the following: (a). Freedom of religion and conscience for all. (b).
The equality before the law of the three monotheistic religions and their
Institutions and followers in the City. (c). The proper identity and sacred
character of the City and its universally significant, religious and cultural
heritage. (d). The Holy Places, the freedom of access to them and of worship
in them. (e). The Regime of "Status Quo" in those Holy Places where it
applies.

The Israelis responded by saying, "Israel expresses its great displeasure
with the declaration made in Rome by the Holy See and the PLO, which
includes the issue of Jerusalem, and other issues which are subjects of the
Israeli-Palestinian negotiations on permanent status. The agreement signed
by these two parties constitutes a regretful intervention in the talks between
Israel and the Palestinians."

Additionally, Israel flatly rejected the reference to Jerusalem in the
aforementioned document. Jerusalem was, is, and shall remain the capital of
the State of Israel, and no agreement or declaration by these or any other
parties will change this fact.

Moreover, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat has been in the Vatican nine times
since 1994.

Could the Pope's comments and the Vatican's Jerusalem declaration
influence the President and his staff who have been in pursuit of the Catholic
vote and who have Catholics on staff?

In another piece to the same puzzle, the United States is said to be holding
off $450 million in much-needed military aide pending the outcome of talks in
Israel. And yesterday, according to the Jerusalem Post, Israel's President
Moshe Katsav submitted to Bush a request from Sharon for an additional
$800 million in U.S. military aid to be spread over two years. This was a
previous pledge by the Clinton administration.

Furthermore, the President has stated his greatest concern is the steady
flow of oil from the region. Could the Arabs use this comment to extort the
country´s approval of an Israeli land giveaway?

The President´s plan of being only a facilitator has now been exchanged with
a scenario which highlights the United States right back in the thick of the
Middle East negotiations.

The question of the hour is, “How will the Lord respond if the U.S. pushes
Israel to make land concessions?” John McTernan, in “God´s Final Warning
to America,” did an excellent job tracking how the Lord responds. And many
of us are sensing the Lord´s fury building over Israel.

With this in mind, if President Bush decides to take a stand against Israel´s
land giveaway, the world will further isolate and chastise this country. Many
nations are angry over the U.S. failure to agree to meet for a U.N. Security
Council meeting that was to approve U.N. troop deployment in Israel as an
attempt to stop the fighting between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

We know that if the President takes a courageous stand, this country will be
protected and blessed for it.

However, if the President does not stop America´s active participation in
Israel´s land giveaway, America will pay an enormous price.

From Scripture, I believe we already know what is going to happen
prophetically, but the bold decision to stand by Israel could have a powerful
impact for the United States.

Keeping matters in perspective, we all know the purpose of these crucial and
important times. It is to bring more people to salvation through Jesus Christ,
their only hope!

                   ---

Note from Bill: We have been led by the Lord to begin providing letters,
handouts, and books in an effort to show the President´s staff how important
this decision is going to be. Please lift up these efforts in your daily prayers.
Thank you!
