Sorry I haven't written you in a while, but I've been too worn-out to
want to compose a note. I think that the last time I wrote you
Matthew was in the Paediatric Unit at our local hospital. He came
home after three nights and seemed well. He was put on a drip and
given various tests while in hospita and nothing untoward was found.

Matthew was diagnosed as having severe reflux, and given medicine to
combat it by quickening the time that milk stayed in his tummy. He
came home Saturday and two days later was took him off the reflux
medicine, 'prepulsid', because he was starting to get worse again.
This was done in consultation with our local doctor. He improved but
on Saturday night began giving us trouble settling him. This
continued to get worse: Deidre and I had our last two or more
continuous hours of sleep on Saturday night. Our patience was pretty
short by Tuesday. On Wednesday morning, at 3 am, after spending 40
minutes with Matthew in order to get 100 mls into him and after
having been in a basinet (we'd moved him from his bedroom on Sunday
night to avoid waking Amber) for 30 minutes and showing no signs of
settling, we both got out of bed and I picked him up. He gave a
scream, then a breathe, then a scream, constantly. In our totally
exhausted states we tried to calm him, even putting him into a warm
bath. Deidre managed to nurse him back to a breath, moan, breath,
moan. He seemed in a trance, just breathing and crying out, his eyes
vacant. At 4.00 am we decided to take him to the hospital and as soon
as I arrived an alarmed nurse raced him into a resus unit. When I
entered they were using a small vacuum hose to removed food from his
nose, throat, and lungs, as well as holding an oxygen mask in front
of his face. He was still screaming after each breath. The doctors
and nurses had an x-ray within minutes, showing that his stomach was
filled with gas. It also turned out that his blood was acidic. Still
screaming, and after consulting with paediatric and neo-natal
doctors, Matthew was taken into the neo-natal intensive care unit,
put on a drip, nasal-gastric tube, had his blood balanced and the
beginning of what has to be more than 100 tests, began. Matthew was
still 'breathe, cryout, breathe, cryout' when I left. When I returned
with Deidre at 9 am (we had to look after Amber) Matthew was in the
same state. They were unable to give him anything to provide pain
relief because of the testing that had to be done. The Paediatritian
okayed morphine when we were leaving, at 1130 am (it was too hard to
sit with him and listen to his screams). The consulting
Paediatritian, Simon James, is a brilliant man. He's been doing this
job for 27 years and the neo-natal unit at Flinders Medical Centre is
excellent. Simon, as of 8.30 tonight, still doesn't know what is
causing Matthew's problems. Matthew has a low sodium level in his
blood but so far Simon hasn't been able to explain it. All the test
results in so far, including his blood map, and a lumbar puncture,
reveal nothing. They will be using MRI on his brain, and then 'every
other organ' until they find something. They'll even be taking some
of his skin and seeing 'what grows on it'. Simon says that Matthew's
problem is getting down to the 'fine print' of medicine and rates him
as having something extremely rare, ie less than ten cases in the
world. He looked like a one of those malnourished african children
when I brought him in. His belly was hugely expanded, his eyes sunk
deep into his little face, with great black circles around his eyes.
He had no colour either. Today he is pink again, and his eyes are
looking tons better. He had lost over 200 grams in a couple of days.
It seems that with a glucose drip he is made well again. We bring him
home and it seems that within a week he is ill again. As Simon
says, 'its spooky'. He's ruled out a probem with his metabolism,
almost ruled out an allergy to protein, and, well, most other things
too it seems.

We're both confident in Simon and confident that there will be a
correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment in the not too distant
future.

Needless to say, we'd appreciate your prayers, for Matthew, Simon,
us, and any other Tom, Dick, and Harry involved in his treatment.

I wonder if this couldn't be posted as a prayer point? I would
understand if it would be appropriate for BPR. Just a thought.

I will bring you better news next time I write.
