Hi,
Just a comment to Charlie concerning the intelligence of those prior to the
flood.
Watchman Nee several years ago wrote a fascinating book called "The Latent
Power of the Soul" in which he does an analysis of the first chapters of
Genesis to show the incredible power of the soul/mind that the early men
had. Sin has, of course, brought this into bondage. I heartily recommend
this book to any who want to pursue this question.

EDEN - NORTH
"And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from
thence it was parted, and became into four heads. The name
of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole
land of Havilah, where there is gold; And the gold of that
land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. And the
name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that
compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. And the name of the
third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the
east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates."
Genesis 2:10-14
Even before we went on our expedition to the Dead Sea, we
had obtained a startling satellite image of a
configuration of rivers which seemed to fit the above
description much better than any other theory so far
proposed. Because we had been advised on how much secrecy
was important to the making of television documentaries, we
kept the information confidential.
As you all know, the advice by Channel 4 in the UK and NBC
in the USA was essentially self-serving and was a
disservice to science and the free flow of information. We
have therefore decided to publish the image to allow
investigators to continue the work that the television
companies have tried to stymie.
http://www.biblemysteries.com/lectures/edennorth/
In the coming weeks we will try and tie together all the
actors regarding the Northern Theory. The Biblical
account does not refer to events in Mesopotamia, but rather
all of them took place in Turkey. From Eden, to the Flood,
via the Tower of Babel Account, through the story of Abraham
all took place in a relatively small area between the Black
Sea in the North and the Ararat range in the East.
It is quite remarkable that one of the four rivers out of
Eden runs directly to the Ararat range and it is quite
likely that the Biblical account describes a situation that
after the great catastrophe of the flood where the survivors
were at Ararat, they proceeded to "go home", that is follow
the river back to Eden. Along the way some of them stopping
to create events that were to be known as "The Tower of
Babel" saga. Could it only have been a coincidence that
language experts trace the origins of the indo-European
language to precisely this region?
One final point this week. It is of course obvious that
rivers do not rise in the desert, they rise in mountains.
The Southern theory was always just wishful thinking.

Gen. Amin Al Hindi Launches Major Terror Initiative
***************************************************
According to DEBKAfile's counter-terrorism and intelligence sources, the
Palestinian Authority officer charged by Yasser Arafat with disrupting
traffic on Tel Aviv-Modi'in-Jerusalem Highway 443 is Gen. Amin al Hindi,
head of Palestinian General Security, the Palestinian at the security
chiefs' meeting called Sunday in Cairo to stem terrorist activity.
Al Hindi is in charge of the operation to assassinate senior Israeli
officers in retaliation for the Israeli death campaign against Palestinian
terrorist activists.
Defense minister Ehud Barak has known what Al Hindi was up to ever since
December 10, when he was caught with a posse of bodyguards in Maccabim
and
Re'ut, observing the movements of top Israeli army officers who live there.
Israeli security men picked him up after local residents reported suspicious
movements by a vehicle with Israeli number plates. Found in his car were
loaded pistols, radio equipment, cell phones and cameras. After first
refusing to identify himself, Al Hindi pulled out his VIP accreditation
from Israeli authorities and demanded that he and his bodyguards be allowed
to go.
Asked what he was doing in Israeli top brass residential neighborhoods, the
Palestinian security chief claimed his driver had got lost on their way from
Gaza to Ramallah. Israeli security informed the defense minister, the chief
of staff and the police commissioner of the incident. Two hours later,
they were ordered to let the intruders go and keep the incident quiet.
In their reports, the security officers only mentioned a group of
Palestinian suspects who were briefly detained and released. Not long after
this, Al Hindi and his men were sighted carrying out surveillance and
photographing along the Modi'in-Jerusalem highway.
The Israeli army has received intelligence that since December, Al Hindi
has recruited, trained, armed and paid over funds to gangs of Tanzim
militiamen, set up in Palestinian villages along highway 443. DEBKAfile's
intelligence sources describe the three missions assigned those groups as
being:
1. To direct gunfire at the homes of Israeli military officers in Maccabim,
Re'ut, Modi'in and Shoham.
2. To subject Lod International Airport to shooting attacks - either by
penetrating the facility or from the outside

SAN DIEGO -- Scientific planet hunters have found two new planetary
systems, neither of them much like ours and one of them downright bizarre,
researchers said on Tuesday.
One star has two planets locked in harmonic orbits -- one twice as fast as
the other -- while the second star's satellites are huge, one of them so big
that it challenges the very definition of a planet, the scientists said at the
annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society.
While astronomers have found dozens of planets outside our solar system
over the last five years, these two new systems are only the second and
third with more than one planet orbiting a star.
These discoveries are part of a long-term project to search for planets among
1,100 stars within 300 light years of Earth, which in cosmic terms is fairly
close. A light year is about 6 trillion miles, the distance light travels in a
year.
These new systems initially fooled astronomers, who previously believed
each star had only one possible planet in its thrall. The planets are not
literally seen, but are detected by a characteristic wobble of the stars they
orbit. The putative planets' gravitational pull causes the wobble.
That the sun-like star, HD 168443, (123 light years away in the constellation
Serpens) has two monster planets orbiting it has been confirmed, according
to astronomer Geoffrey Marcy of UC Berkeley and Paul Butler of the
Carnegie Institution of Washington.
Both of these planets are big, but one is so huge that it makes the whole
system "truly bizarre," Marcy said in an e-mail interview.
"The outer companion (of this star) is so massive, between 17 and 40 times
the mass of Jupiter, that it seems too large for a conventional planet," Marcy
said.
"We frankly don't know what name to give it. Is it a planet or brown dwarf (a
dim failed star) or something that formed in the protoplanetary disk, but
gobbled an unusual quantity of gas in that disk?" Marcy said. "We simply
don't know."
The other star with two planets circling it is Gliese 876 in the constellation
Aquarius, a mere 15 light years from Earth.
Gliese's satellites are more seemly in size, with one planet at least half the
mass of Jupiter and the other with nearly twice Jupiter's mass.
What makes them remarkable is their resonant orbits. The smaller planet
orbits the star twice for every one 60-day orbit of the bigger planet, the
astronomers said. This synchrony may have led astronomers to believe there
was just one planet around the star, according to astronomer Jack Lissauer
of the NASA Ames Research Center.
But their closeness to each other may help scientists learn more about
planets in our own solar system, he said.
"They're tugging on each other much closer than any other pair that we've
seen," Lissauer said, referring to the planets' gravitational pull. He said this
proximity may let astronomers determine the actual masses of these two
bodies, rather than just the minimum masses they have for most extrasolar
planets.
"The 2-to-1 ratio (in the planets' orbits) probably implies that the planets
formed separately with different periods," Marcy said. "But one planet moved
from its original location. As it moved, it gravitationally shepherded the other
planet in the current 2-to-1 ratio."
He said this was similar to the planets Neptune and Pluto in our solar
system, which have an orbital period of 3-to-2. Neptune moved and is
shepherding Pluto, Marcy said. More information on these discoveries can

Subject: [bprlist] Quantum Physics Meets the Qubit

Quantum Physics Meets the Qubit
by Mark K. Anderson
2:00 a.m. Jan. 9, 2001 PST
AMSTERDAM -- Information, say the politicians and pundits, is the natural
resource of the New Economy.
But hold that thought. To what kind of information do we refer? Is it the
abstract concept of "0" and "1" -- entities, like God himself, that never bow to
the physical world but just are?
Scientists are convening in Amsterdam this week to continue a quest begun
two decades ago by Nobel laureate Richard Feynman, a quest to dispel this
Platonic fantasy. The Fourth Workshop on Quantum Information Processing
will be drawing scores of information researchers from around the globe.
These scientists and mathematicians investigate the manifold ways
everything -- from computing to cryptography to the nature of information
itself -- changes when quantum mechanics, that 20th century camel, sticks
its nose into the tent.
Information, or at least the only kind of information computers can work with,
is innately physical. It must be represented in some physical system -- say,
the millions of on-off switches representing "1" and "0" in a computer chip.
And it must be manipulated and processed within that physical system --
say, through the logic gates of a computer's microprocessor.
No sand and wires, no info.
The distinction may seem inconsequential, but then again so did the niggling
that spawned Einstein's Theory of Relativity (minor discrepancies in the
measured speed of light).
Perhaps because of the extreme pace of miniaturization and sheer number-
crunching might over the past several decades, an invincible mindset has
emerged that sees information as exempt from the physical universe around
it.
"These [computers] -- the most complex things produced by the human mind
-- can be made indefinitely small because of a crucial distinction," writes
George Johnson in a Dec. 31 New York Times editorial. "While ordinary
machines work by manipulating stuff, computers manipulate information,
symbols which are essentially weightless.
"A bit of information, a one or a zero, can be indicated by a pencil mark in a
checkbox, by a microscopic spot on a magnetic disk or by the briefest pulse
of electricity or scintilla of light.
"The special nature of information confers another advantage. The power of
computation can be leveraged and leveraged again. Design a computer and
then use it to help you design a better computer, ad infinitum."
Well, sort of.
Charles Bennett of IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center studies the
fundamental, physical nature of information and information processing and
says that the time is long overdue for a re-think not only of the computer but
also of all the 0s and 1s that flow through its veins.
And we can start with those two little numbers.
"When this abstraction was successfully made -- in the 1930s to the '50s --
the people who did it had left out the principles of quantum mechanics, which
have to do with distinguishability," Bennett said.
The early computer innovators set up a framework that continues to this day.
They thought of the bit as theoretically identical to zeros and ones written on
long strips of paper. A zero can forever be zero; it will only change to one if
the computer or computer operator makes it so; it cannot be both zero and
one at the same time; everyone who wants to can see it; and observing it
does nothing to alter its "zeroness."
An obviously productive idea, although it's also one that has little relevance
to the elemental laws of physics that our ever-smaller and faster computer
chips now brush up against.
"(John) von Neumann and (Claude) Shannon, all those people thought of
information as classical, even though they knew better," Bennett said. "They
were aware of quantum mechanics. And indeed, von Neumann had
contributed fundamental things to quantum mechanics. But they thought it
was somehow irrelevant to information processing, like it would just make
the information less reliable. It would be a nuisance."
So "quantum information processing" is, in a sense, where all computers will
be headed when the IT size and speed scales improve by several more
orders of magnitude. It's time we get used to it: as far as the laws of nature
are concerned, zero and one are quaint abstractions.
What comes closer to mirroring the physical universe is not the bit --robust,
unambiguous and infinitely manipulatable -- but rather the quantumbit or
"qubit."
Start computing with individual atoms, molecules, photons or nuclei, and it
quickly becomes evident how fragile, ephemeral and intricately entangled the
fundamental units of information can be.
To be discussed at QIP 2001 includes the kinds of programs that can be run
on a computer composed of qubits; the kinds of ways qubits can be
manipulated to do things no conventional computer can; the kinds of
quantum leaps in security and communication that qubits bring; and the
systems that need to be devised to make it all happen.
No small task, and one that will undoubtedly open more hidden doors and
passageways than the ones that are already known.
But at the root of it all is the qubit itself.
"What I say to people who don't like to think about many-dimensional
spaces is that classical information is like the information in a book and
quantum information is more like the information in a dream," Bennett said.
"If you have a dream and somebody asks you about it, there's a certain
privacy to it. Pretty soon, you're remembering your explanations rather than
what the dream originally was. So in the course of making it public and
making many copies of it, the original content of it is altered in an
unpredictable way.
"Of course, dreams are terribly inexact. But there's an exact mathematics for
handling this dreamlike information -- and it was known even in the '20s. But
... it wasn't thought of as something that had to do with the central notion of
information. And that's what our insight over the last several years is. That it
should have been included in our central notion of information, and that we
are just beginning to discover all that can flow from that."

By Irit Rosenblum Ha'aretz Tourism Correspondent Ha'aretz 10 January
2001
Continental Airways sold tickets to the Arab population of East Jerusalem at
a discount of hundreds of dollars per customer compared to the price paid by
Jewish passengers, it emerged in a report by the Association of Travel
Agents.
The association's 1999-2000 report was released to mark its annual
convention which begins today at the Dead Sea.
The report also notes that Continental made special offers available to
American Express business customers, with exceptionally high discounts to
customers ordering tickets with American Express credit cards at American
Express offices.
Following a meeting between the association's aviation committee and
Continental general manager in Israel, Avi Freedman, the airline agreed to
change its policies on these matters.

technology: Honey, I shrunk the cogs
PHILIP BALL
Tiny mills the size of a single red blood cell, driven by
light beams, are turning the cogs of some of the world's
smallest machines. P=E9ter Galajda and P=E1l Ormos of the
Biological Research Centre of the Hungarian Academy of
Sciences in Szeged have used light to create, hold and
power little rotors that could have a big future as pumps
and switches.
The miniaturization of mechanical technology is already
producing machines with moving parts too small for the
naked eye to see. These 'microelectromechanical' systems
(MEMS) are typically just a few millimetres across, and
their microscopic components might include strips that
bend or resonate to detect pressure or sound, or cogs and
gears that manoeuvre little mirrors for guiding light beams.
MEMS are being developed as sensors and as optical
switches for light-based information technology.
But the rotors devised by Galajda and Ormos are as small
as a single tooth on a typical MEMS cog: just five
thousandths of a millimetre (five microns) across.
MEMS components are generally carved from silicon
wafers using masks and etching acids, or electron beams.
Instead the Hungarian researchers used a resin which
hardens when exposed to light.
Galajda and Ormos 'wrote' the shape of the rotor into
liquid resin using a laser beam. The liquid solidified only
where the laser spot passed.
With computer control of the laser, they generated complex
shapes =97 precise to half a micron, the size of the laser
spot. They then washed away the unhardened resin.
The researchers made screw-like spoked rotors akin to the
twisted blades of an aeroplane propeller. This allowed the
rotors to be driven in a single direction, like a windmill
turning in the wind. It was not wind that propelled these
minuscule objects, but light itself.
Galajda and Ormos suspended the rotors in a solvent on a
glass slide, and held onto them with another laser beam. In
a very bright beam, small objects can be immobilized by
the light's electromagnetic field. 'Optical tweezers'
operating on this principle are used in biology to
manipulate individual cells and molecules.
In this case, the light did not only trap the rotors; it made
them spin. As light bounces off the hard resin, it pushes the
spokes around. The twist ensures that all of these impulses
induce rotation in the same direction. Held in the laser's
fingers, the rotor spins.
Galajda and Ormos have made a series of cogs using the
same light-hardening method, and fixed them onto a glass
slide so that their teeth intermesh. One of the cogs, a
twisted-spoke rotor, drove the others into motion. This
set-up could be used to make a cell-sized pump or switch,
the researchers suggest.
The work is published in Applied Physics Letters1.

Political Program Adopted at the 12th Session of the Palestine National
Council Cairo, 8 June 1974
The Palestine National Council,
On the basis of the Palestine National Charter and the Political Program
drawn up at the eleventh session, held from 6-12 January 1979; and from its
belief that it is impossible for a permanent and just peace to be
established
in the area unless our Palestinian people recover from all their national
rights and, first and foremost, their rights to return and to
self-determination on the whole of the soil of their homeland; and in the
light of a study of the new political circumstances that have come into
existence in the period between the Council's last and present sessions,
resolves the following:
1. To reaffirm the Palestine Liberation Organization's previous attitude
to Resolution 242, which obliterates the national right of our people and
deals with the cause of our people as a problem of refugees. The Council
therefore refuses to have anything to do with this resolution at any
level, Arab or international, including the Geneva Conference.
2. The Palestine Liberation Organization will employ all means, and first
and foremost armed struggle, to liberate Palestinian territory and to
establish the independent combatant national authority for the people over
every part of Palestinian territory that is liberated. This will require
further changes being effected in the balance of power in favor of our
people and their struggle.
3. The Liberation Organization will struggle against any proposal for a
Palestinian entity the price of which is recognition, peace, secure
frontiers, renunciation of national rights, and the deprival of our people
of their right to return and their right to self-determination on the soil
of their homeland.
4. Any step taken towards liberation is a step towards the realization of
the Liberation Organization's strategy of establishing the democratic
Palestinian State specified in the resolutions of the previous Palestinian
National Councils.
5. Struggle along with the Jordanian national forces to establish a
Jordanian-Palestinian national front whose aim will be to set up in Jordan
a democratic national authority in close contact with the Palestinian
entity that is established through the struggle.
6. The Liberation Organization will struggle to establish unity in
struggle between the two peoples and between all the forces of the Arab
liberation movement that are in agreement on this program.
7. In the light of this program, the Liberation Organization will struggle
to strengthen national unity and to raise it to the level where it will be
able to perform its national duties and tasks.
8. Once it is established, the Palestinian national authority will strive
to achieve a union of the confrontation countries, with the aim of
completing the liberation of all Palestinian territory, and as a step
along the road to comprehensive Arab unity.
9. The Liberation Organization will strive to strengthen its solidarity
with the socialist countries, and with the forces of liberation and
progress throughout the world, with the aim of frustrating all the schemes
of Zionism, reaction and imperialism.
10. In light of this program, the leadership of the revolution will
determine the tactics which will serve and make possible the realization
of these objectives.
The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization will make
every effort to implement this program, and should a situation arise
affecting the destiny and the future of the Palestinian people, the National
Assembly will be convened in extraordinary session.

Political Program Adopted at the 12th Session of the Palestine National
Council
Cairo, 8 June 1974
(source http://palestine-un.org/plo/doc_one.html )
The Palestine National Council,
On the basis of the Palestine National Charter and the Political Program
drawn up at the eleventh session, held from 6-12 January 1973; and from its
belief that it is impossible for a permanent and just peace to be
established in the area unless our Palestinian people recover from all their
national rights and, first and foremost, their rights to return and to
self-determination on the whole of the soil of their homeland; and in the
light of a study of the new political circumstances that have come into
existence in the period between the Council's last and present sessions,
resolves the following:
1. To reaffirm the Palestine Liberation Organization's previous attitude to
Resolution 242, which obliterates the national right of our people and deals
with the cause of our people as a problem of refugees. The Council therefore
refuses to have anything to do with this resolution at any level, Arab or
international, including the Geneva Conference.
5. Struggle along with the Jordanian national forces to establish a
Jordanian-Palestinian national front whose aim will be to set up in Jordan a
democratic national authority in close contact with the Palestinian entity
that is established through the struggle.
6. The Liberation Organization will struggle to establish unity in struggle
between the two peoples and between all the forces of the Arab liberation
movement that are in agreement on this program.
7. In the light of this program, the Liberation Organization will struggle
to strengthen national unity and to raise it to the level where it will be
able to perform its national duties and tasks.
8. Once it is established, the Palestinian national authority will strive to
achieve a union of the confrontation countries, with the aim of completing
the liberation of all Palestinian territory, and as a step along the road to
comprehensive Arab unity.
9. The Liberation Organization will strive to strengthen its solidarity with
the socialist countries, and with the forces of liberation and progress
throughout the world, with the aim of frustrating all the schemes of
Zionism, reaction and imperialism.
10. In light of this program, the leadership of the revolution will
determine the tactics which will serve and make possible the realization of
thee objectives.
The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization will make
every effort to implement this program, and should a situation arise
affecting the destiny and the future of the Palestinian people, the National
Assembly will be convened in extraordinary session.

Prayers, witches and clouds greet first lunar eclipse of Millennium
PARIS, Jan 10 (AFP) - The Moon was tinged with red Monday as it dipped
behind the Earth's shadow for the first lunar eclipse of the Third
Millennium, an event marked with fear and incantations among the
superstitious, and excitement but also exasperation among an army of
astronomers.
Skywatchers in Europe and Africa, as well as the Middle East and most
of western Asia, were best-placed to enjoy the eclipse, which began at
1842 GMT, when the Earth moved between the Sun and the Moon, casting a
bite-sized shadow over its own satellite.
From 1950 GMT the shadow was total, lasting for 62 minutes before going into
reverse, in a celestial show lasting around three hours in all.
Eager astronomers set up telescopes, hoping for a glimpse of a
blood-red Moon.
This phenomenon occurs because at umbra, or full shadow, the Earth's
atmosphere refracts the light from the Sun, filting out all sunlight
colours except for those tints in the orange and red parts of the
spectrum.
The depth of colour depends mainly on the state of dust pollution in
the upper atmosphere caused by volcanic eruptions. As the last major
eruption occurred in 1991, in Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, many
astronomers had great hopes for a good show.
In much of northern Europe, though, cloudy skies and a dank chill were
a dampener.
On the mound of Montmartre in Paris, several dozen astronomers or
tourists raised telescopes or binoculars to the heavens.
"Celestial mechanics are a terrific thing, it all started on time,"
quipped Jean Fort, a retired Lille University astronomy professor who
set up a telescope on the footsteps of the Sacre-Coeur cathedral.
"When we saw the Earth's shadow start to move across the Moon, people
started to clap."
But the applause quickly yielded to disappointment as a thick gauze of
cloud began to veil the sight.
For people indoors, the Internet was a salvation, thanks to several
websites that transmitted images from clear-sky locations through
webcams.
The eclipse, whose start could be spotted from as far away as
Australia and whose end could be glimpsed on the eastern coast of the
Americas, is the last full eclipse viewable in western Europe until
2003. The previous one was in January last year, but occurred in the
early hours of the morning.
The big event this year is a full solar eclipse, when the Moon moves
between the Earth and Sun. The great event will be viewable from a
narrow band across southern Africa, from Angola to Madagascar on June
21.
Eclipses have always been touted by some as a sign of ill omen --
often feared as a harbinger of war, a crop failure or natural
disaster.
In Niamey, the capital of the western African state of Niger, prayers
were said in several mosques to counter "bad spells" from Tuesday's
eclipse.
And the BBC reported that an estimated 1,500 white witches were
planning to gather in Britain, Sweden, Iceland, France, Canada and
Australia during the eclipse to ward off any doom it might bring.
Dozens were expected at a famous prehistoric stone circle at Avebury,
southern England, a site long associated with pagan rituals.
"In old days the peasant people used to think that it brought gloom
and doom," Kevin Carlyon, high priest of the British White Witches and
the Covenant of Earth Magic, told the BBC.
"But the reality is something bad could happen because of all the
negative energy created by people fearful of what it can do."

Lunar Eclipse Darkens Persian Gulf=20
Associated Press
Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001; 6:14 p.m. EST
http://www.worldnews.com/
TEHRAN, Iran =96=96 As a lunar eclipse darkened the night sky over parts
of the Eastern Hemisphere on Tuesday, tens of thousands gathered on
rooftops in the Persian Gulf region to watch the moon and say prayers
marveling the powers of God.=20
"I didn't want to miss this opportunity and I waited on the rooftop to
watch the eclipse until the end. It gives me a stronger trust in God,"
said Farida Ahmadi, a 39-year-old architect and mother.=20
The partial eclipse began at 10:15 p.m. in Iran and became total an
hour later. State radio and television called on Iranians to perform
the ayat prayers, a Muslim ritual designed to marvel at the powers of
God.=20
The eclipse was very apparent through much of the Persian Gulf region,
in Iraq, Jordan, Syria, Egypt and Yemen.=20
The lunar event was also visible in parts of Africa, Asia, and central
Europe. In Germany, clear skies allowed for a full showing of the
eclipse, which began around 7:00 p.m. Shortly after 9:00 p.m., the
light of the moon was almost fully snuffed out by a heavy shadow,
which lasted nearly an hour.=20
Lunar eclipses are associated in Iraq with a popular children's story
about a moon that is "eaten by the great big whale." During past
eclipses, tens of thousands of children flooded the streets, singing
songs and begging the "whale" to give the moon back.=20
In Jordan, a copper colored moon shone in clear skies over the capital
Amman, and 50 members of the astronomical society gathered at a public
park to watch the moon.=20
In neighboring Syria, hundreds of people, many with cameras, drove to
the Qassioun mountain on the edge of the capital Damascus to watch the
eclipse.=20
In Yemen, nightclubs and bars in the port city of Aden closed their
doors temporarily and mosques stayed open late for worshippers
offering special prayers.=20
Thousands camped on beaches or took to rooftops in Muscat, capital of
the Gulf sultanate Oman. In the Gulf nation of Qatar, authorities
exhorted residents to head to mosques to offer prayers and read from
the Quran, Islam's holy book.=20
But in Egypt, where clear skies over Cairo made the eclipse clearly
visible, the phenomenon attracted little attention.=20
"Why hide? What is the moon afraid of?" asked waiter Ahmed
Abdel-Samia'a.

Lebanese tears apart dove to protest Mideast
http://www.latimes.com/wires/20010110/tCB00a0624.html
BEIRUT, Jan 9 (Reuters) - A Lebanese artist has videotaped himself
tearing apart a living dove to demonstrate what he described as a
Middle East peace process that annihilates Arabs.
The exhibition at Ziko House cultural centre in Beirut shows painter
and sculptor Imad Issa killing a white dove while reading sentences
about the need to kill Israeli settlers.
"What you are seeing is a demonstration against the violence that the
Israelis have been inflicting on the Arabs for more than half a
century," Issa said.
"The dove of peace is nothing but a big lie. It is a Zionist on whom
we have to learn how to practice violence," he added. Lebanon has weak
codes against animal cruelty that are virtually never enforced.

Book proposal adds to 'IT' mystery
Invention said to be bigger than PCs and the Internet
http://www.msnbc.com/news/513749.asp
By PJ Mark
INSIDE.COM
Jan. 9 - Harvard Business School Press executive editor Hollis
Heimbouch has just paid $250,000 for a book about IT - but neither
the editor nor the agent, Dan Kois of The Sagalyn Literary Agency,
knows what IT is.
IT, also code-named Ginger, is an invention developed by 49-year-old
scientist Dean Kamen, and the subject of a planned book by journalist
Steve Kemper. According to Kemper's proposal, IT will change the
world, and is so extraordinary that it has drawn the attention of
technology visionaries Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs and the investment
dollars of pre-eminent Silicon Valley venture capitalist John Doerr,
among others.
Kemper - who has been published in Smithsonian, National Geographic
and Outside among others - has had exclusive access to Kamen and the
engineers at his New Hampshire-based research and development
company, DEKA, for the past year and a half. He tags the proposed
book as Soul of the New Machine meets The New New Thing and won over
his agent and publisher with e-mails describing the project in
carefully couched language. He also included an amusing narrative of
a meeting between Bezos, Jobs, Doerr and Kamen.
In the proposal, Doerr calls Kamen - who was just awarded the
National Medal of Technology, the country's highest such award - a
combination of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. Doerr also says, a touch
ominously, that he had been sure that he wouldn't see the development
of anything in his lifetime as important as the World Wide Web -
until he saw IT. According to the proposal, another investor, Credit
Suisse First Boston, expects Kamen's invention to make more money in
its first year than any start-up in history, predicting Kamen will be
worth more in five years than Bill Gates. Jobs told Kamen the
invention would be as significant as the PC, the proposal says.
And though there are no specifics in the proposal as to what the
invention is, there are some tantalizing clues. Is IT an energy
source? Some sort of environmentally friendly personal transport
device? One editor who saw the proposal went as far as to speculate -
jokingly (perhaps) - that IT was a type of personal hovering craft.

Buried 1,800 years ago, 43 coins offer clues to high-society Roman London=20

=20
By David Keys, Archaeology Correspondent=20
10 January 2001=20
A perfectly preserved hoard of gold coins, which were hidden under the
floorboards of a palatial Roman villa 1,800 years ago, have been discovered=
by
archaeologists.=20
The treasure, consisting of 43 Roman gold aurei dating from AD60 to AD174,
would have been worth the equivalent of =A360,000 when it was interred by
wealthy Romano-Britons. The 22-carat gold coins are one of just four
comparable hoards found in Britain and the first such treasure to be uneart=
hed
in London.=20
Archaeologists from the Museum of London discovered the gold in a small
subterranean chamber under the long-decayed floorboards of a once
well-appointed Roman town house, off what is now Fenchurch Street in the ci=
ty
centre. Why the treasure was hidden remains a mystery. The coins could have
been put there as a religious "foundation offering" when that part of the
house was being built in the late second century AD. They would have acted =
as
a gift to the gods to ensure the householder and his family enjoyed prosper=
ity
and good health.=20
Perhaps more likely, the gold could have been stashed away for safe-keeping
because the period of the 170s and 180s was one of increased insecurity in
Britain.=20
In 169-170 there had been a tribal revolt in Wales. By 175 the disturbances=
in
Britain required the dispatch of thousands of additional troops from the
Continent. Then, in 180, Scottish tribes broke through Hadrian's Wall and
initiated a four-year war in which a top Roman official - possibly the
governor of Britain - was killed.=20
The troubled times continued with the mutiny of Roman legions in Britain, w=
ho
appointed one of their leaders as a rebel emperor. By the mid 180s Britain =
was
in the grip of virtual civil war, with British-based Roman troops trying to
murder a new governor.=20
The house under which the gold was hidden had at least 1,500 square metres =
of
floor space and seems to have boasted beautiful multi-coloured mosaic floor=
s
with designs, and probably figurative images, in red, green, yellow, black =
and
white. The walls were also richly adorned with wall paintings of floral,
geometric and figurative designs and scenes painted in similar colours. Par=
t
of the house even sported a colonnade of classical columns.=20
Bone gaming counters and hair pins, glass beads and fragments of jet
bracelets, oil lamps, fine ceramic tableware and wine and olive oil amphora=
e
from the period have been unearthed in the excavations, directed by the
archaeologist Trevor Brigham.=20
The house was initially built in the mid-second century. It was periodicall=
y
enlarged and continued to flourish in the 3rd and 4th centuries.=20
As one of London's most prominent and spacious townhouses it may well have
been known to one of the Roman Empire's most important rulers - the Emperor
Septimius Severus. Between AD 208 and 211, the emperor, his family and his
court were based in Britain - and London consequently became one of the mos=
t
important cities in the empire.=20
The Fenchurch Street coins were minted by various Roman emperors and bear t=
he
heads of Nero, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus, Trajan, Hadrian, Aelius Caesar,
Antoninus Pius, Faustina (Antoninus's wife), Lucius Verus, Marcus Aurelius =
and
Lucilla (Marcus's daughter).=20
The treasure will be on display in the Museum of London's "High Street
Londinium" exhibition on Roman London from tomorrow.=20

1. GREENSPAN ACCUSED OF CONSPIRING TO DEPRESS GOLD PRICES
U.S. Media Silent on Story Since December
What do Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, the Bank for
International Settlements, leading gold houses, such as Deutsche Bank
and J.P. Morgan, as well as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Larry
Summers have in common? They are all defendants in a lawsuit launched
last December by the Gold Anti-Trust Action Committee (GATA), which
alleges that they have conspired to manipulate the price of gold and
maintain it at an artificially low price.
In an interview with the European German-language publication,=20
Spiegel-Online, U.S. Attorney and gold analyst Reginald Howe states,
"These gentlemen and these banks are responsible for one of the
greatest scandals of economic history." The O.K. for the conspiracy
is alleged to have come from the White House.
The Sherman Act specifically prohibits price fixing in interstate
trade. According to Howe, "The cartel has been treacherously and
artificially suppressing the precious metal's prices to unnaturally
low levels for years."
GATA's suit alleges that mining companies, their workers and
shareholders have been driven into ruin by the artificially low price
of gold. Workers in third world countries are said to have been
placed in perilously bad straits. Paradoxically, the Wall Street
bankers are said to have made millions by artificially manipulating
the gold price.
While the story has been active for over a month, the U.S. media have
spiked it and provided virtually no coverage of this major item. But
on January 6, 2001, Der Spiegel online broke the story in German.=20
German and Swiss banks are among the defendants. Agence France Presse
is also reported to have run with the story.
According to GATA chairman, Bill Murphy, the price of gold in a free
market should be above $600/oz. Some gold observers have suspected
that the lazy price of gold did not match what was going on elsewhere
in the world, such as the Middle East crisis and the climbing oil
prices. Platinum and palladium seem to be closer to realistic market
prices and have soared due to recent changes in the last year.=20
However, a realistic gold price on the open market would have severely
reduced value of the dollar and destroyed the illusion of a prosperous
economy.
If the GATA suit is correct, the banks have been playing a game of
musical chairs with gold by loaning it from each other at extremely
low interest rates around one per cent. When the music stops, someone
will be left without gold and the time will come to pay the piper --
that will mean bad times for the global economy.
The Bank for International Settlements, the Deutsche Bank and the U.S.
Federal Reserve Bank all declined to comment on the charges.

2. INTELLIGENCE CZAR?
President Clinton has signed yet another order in his last few days as
president. This time he has created a new executive position for
counterintelligence to oversee and coordinate activities between the
FBI, CIA and other agencies, and to lobby for money in Congress. In
the past such a position was created to oversee drug control policies.
It is not certain why Clinton suddenly feels the intelligence
community needs such a person now that he will be leaving office.
Perhaps time will tell.

3. COLD WAVE HITS WORLDWIDE
Whatever Happened to Global Warming?
This winter has been one of the harshest winters in recent memory.=20
The extremely cold temperature of -70=B0C (-94=B0F) was recorded last week
in the Kemerovo region of Siberia, straining power sources and forcing
people to avoid going outside. The eastern regions in Russia have
experienced power shortages leaving 15,000 people without heat while
outside temperatures dropped to -35=B0C (-31=B0F).
Meanwhile, a severe winter storm, which hit northern China earlier
this week, is responsible for the deaths of at least 21 people and a
food crisis for thousands more. Over two feet of blowing snow and
sand have made it impossible to tend livestock and fuel shortages have
made it difficult to get plows moving to clear roads in outlying
areas. Communications have been damaged by the storm making it
difficult to determine the extent of the damage.
Regions in northern and eastern India have also reported below average
temperatures. As many as 68 people are reported dead and 335 people
are suffering from hypothermia. The temperatures dropped to 4=B0C
(40=B0F) in an area where the poor sleep on the streets with scanty
clothing.
Asia is not the only area suffering from below normal temperatures.=20
The United States posted its coldest November and December on record
with an average national temperature of only 1=B0C (33.8=B0 F). The
near-freezing two-month reading broke a record that was set in 1898.
The debate over global warming may give way to a new crisis: energy
shortages. With electricity shortages and failures cropping up in the
United States, Russia, and India in recent weeks; plans by OPEC to
withhold crude oil supplies and force oil prices back up; and record
high prices for natural gas and heating oil, it is inevitable that
energy will become the next concern for those who need crisises to
keep the masses under control.

4. MEMORANDUM CITES EXTREMIST THREAT TO TEMPLE MOUNT
A memorandum sent from the Center for the Protection of Democracy in
Israel to Prime Minister Ehud Barak identifies what its considers
=93threats to the Temple Mount by extremist and messianic groups.=94 The
memorandum compared the controversy over Temple Mount to a smoldering
volcano, which could erupt and threaten an all out war with the Muslim
world. Various groups, like the Temple Mount Faithful and others, have
begun to reassemble the various articles used in the Jewish Temple
rituals and have expressed a desire to rebuilt the temple on top of
the historic mount where Islamic mosques now sit. The memo states
fears that extremists could bomb the Muslim Holy Sites and spark a war
against Israel. It not only attacks what it calls extremist Jewish
groups, but also Christian fundamentalists and messianic groups for
supporting the cause as well.

5. FAILING PEACE PROCESS MAY DOOM BARAK
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, facing elections in February, may
have gone too far in the peace negotiations to come back to a
hard-line position in his campaign rhetoric. His proposal to share
Jerusalem with the Palestinians is so unpopular that even the support
of members of his own Labor Party is eroding.
Likud chairman Ariel Sharon, a former general who has been seen as a
hawk, is leading in the polls in spite of a media campaign to paint
him as responsible for the recent violence. His visit to the Temple
Mount last September sent Muslim Palestinians into the streets to
protest, thus rekindling the violence. Whether or not Sharon=92s
actions actually prompted the violence or whether Palestinian leaders
used the incident as an excuse to order more fighting is not known.
However, one thing is certain: Jerusalem will continue to be the
stumbling stone the Bible predicted in any future peace negotiations.

6. SADDAM HUSSEIN IS ALIVE AND WELL?
Last week we reported that opposition parties in Iraq believed that
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein had suffered either a stroke or a heart
attack. This week, however, it appears that Hussein really suffers
from foot tumors. According to Independent News the Iraqi leader=92s
feet often bleed from non-life-threatening form of cancerous tumors on
his feet. The condition makes it painful for Hussein to stand for
long periods of time as he did when he reviewed a national parade last
week.
As if to show he is still in control, Hussein marked Iraq's army day
by making a defiant televised address to the nation and establishing a
new command headquarters for a special military force to support the
Palestine revolt against Israel.

**ENEWS SPECIAL OFFER**
HIDDEN TREASURES IN THE BIBLICAL TEXT
by Chuck Missler
For the novice as well as the sophisticate, this book is full of
surprises. It includes subtle discoveries lying just "beneath" the
text -- hidden messages, encryptions, deliberate misspellings and
other amendments to the text -- that present implications beyond
the immediate context, demonstrating a skillful design that has its
origin from outside our space and time. Drawing upon over forty
years of collecting, Chuck highlights in this book many of the
precious nuggets that have become characteristic of his popular
Bible studies around the world.
It is guaranteed to stimulate, provoke, and, hopefully, to
disturb. It will confound the skeptic and encourage the believer.
It is a "must read" for every thinking seeker of truth and serious
inquirer of reality.

Subject: [bprlist] College students thrilled by trip to Israel
From: Shophar_Sho_Good
Date: 10 Jan 2001 16:45:01 EST
Published Wednesday, January 10, 2001, in the Miami Herald
http://www.miamiherald.com/content/today/news/jewish/digdocs/022827.htm
College students thrilled by trip to Israel
More than 100 college students from Florida returned home early Monday,
exhausted by a non-stop 14-hour flight but thrilled by their
week-and-a-half-long visit to Israel.
``I absolutely loved this trip. It was an amazing experience,'' said Melissa
Dolinsky, 18, a freshman at the University of Miami.
Deborah Kaufman, a 19-year-old sophomore at the University of Florida, had
been in Israel previously with her parents. ``Most things I already had seen,
but I enjoyed experiencing it with my peers instead,'' she said.
The students were among about 5,000 from around the United States touring
Israel as part of Birthright Israel, a program established in 1999 by
philanthropists Charles Bronfman and Michael Steinhardt to provide free trips
to Israel for Jewish college students. The program's purpose is to strengthen
Jewish young people's ties to the Jewish state and, in turn, the Jewish
religion.
Priority is given to students who never have been to Israel or who have not
been there as a part of a group, such as the High School in Israel program.
Birthright Israel began with trips last winter. This year's trip came amid a
backdrop of violence in the Middle East that has greatly reduced tourism to
Israel. Security was tight for the students' visit.
Participants were given tours of significant sites throughout Israel. The
group from Florida, which arrived in Israel on Dec. 29, started at the Dead
Sea, climbed Masada and then visited northern Israel before spending the last
five days in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
Several students said they particularly enjoyed talking to Israeli teenagers
as part of the Partnership 2000 program. The meetings took place in Or Akiva,
sister city for the Miami Jewish community.
``It was fun to talk to teens in Israel and I realized that we [America and
Israeli teens] are exactly the same,'' said Stacy Feder, an 18-year-old
sophomore education major at Florida State University.
``I loved interacting with Israeli students about our age and realizing how
similar we are, despite living on opposite sides of the world,'' Dolinsky
said.
``Partnership 2000 was great because it was so relaxing to just sit around and
hang out with Israeli kids,'' said Jonathan Singer, a second-year law student
at the University of Miami.
Many said they were impressed by their visit to the West Wall in Jerusalem.
``I'd say the Wailing Wall was more unbelievable than I thought it would be,''
Feder said.
Singer said he was impressed by the climb up Masada, a mountain fortress where
Jewish rebels committed suicide rather than surrender to the Roman Army after
a siege in 70 C.E.
``I had a lot of fun climbing Masada and I enjoyed the hikes in general. It
was so peaceful in those places,'' he said.
All of those interviewed said they would love to come back to Israel.
``Absolutely,'' Melissa Dolinsky said. ``I'm planning to study there my junior
year in college.''
Stacy Feder said she definitely wants to come back, ``probably some day when I
have a family of my own.''
One of the main events took place at the Israel Convention Center last
Saturday night where the students were greeted by dignitaries including
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. ``Welcome to Israel. We love you all,'' he
said.
Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert urged the students to have a continuing
relationship with Israel. ``We hope you will make this city your home,'' he
said.

*** Israeli soldiers fire warning shots
JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli soldiers fired warning shots toward the car
of a senior Roman Catholic bishop at a West Bank roadblock on
Tuesday, his driver said. Bishop Boulos Marcuzzi, the second-ranking
Catholic prelate in the Holy Land, was on his way to visit a sick
priest in the Palestinian village of Zababde in the northern West
Bank when his car approached an Israeli army roadblock. "I didn't
see a stop sign but I slowed down and zigzagged through the concrete
blocks at about 6 mph," said the bishop's chauffeur, Father Elie
Kurzum. As he did so, two soldiers came running out, pointed their
rifles at the car and fired three shots, one in the air and two
close to the car, Kurzum said. Kurzum said he spoke to the soldiers
in Hebrew. One of them shouted "Go back. I'll put a bullet in your
head," the priest said. Nobody was injured and the car - which
Kurzum said has diplomatic license plates and was flying the Vatican
flag on its right fender - was not hit.

*** McDonald's sued over spilled coffee
MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois woman is suing a
McDonald's owner, Wal-Mart, a cup maker and her own mother over
spilled coffee she says was too hot. Teresa Reed claims in the
lawsuit against Short Enterprises, owner of the Murphysboro
McDonald's, that a cup of coffee she bought at the drive-through
window in 1998 spilled and scalded her ankle, allegedly leaving a
permanent scar. Reed said the coffee, which the suit alleged was
"served at a temperature too hot for consumption and hot enough to
scald the human body," spilled and burned her after she placed it in
a cup holder in her mother's car. The suit seeks $450,000 from Short
Enterprises, as well as from cup maker Cobb Manufacturing and
Wal-Mart, the manufacturer of the cup holder. The suit also accuses
Reed's mother of negligence, saying Carol Sanders "owed a duty of
care for the safety of others riding in her vehicle."

*** Parents told to end Boy Scouts ties
NEW YORK (AP) - Reform Jewish leaders have recommended that parents
withdraw their children from Boy Scout chapters and that synagogues
end their sponsorship of Scout troops because of the group's
exclusion of gays. The Boy Scouts of America's stance on gays is
"incompatible with our consistent belief that every individual -
regardless of his or her sexual orientation - is created in the
image of God and is deserving of equal treatment," the Joint
Commission on Social Action said in a Jan. 5 letter to Reform
movement congregations. Congregations also should publicize their
reason for cutting ties with the Boy Scouts to help educate the
public, the commission said. The advisory was prompted by a Supreme
Court ruling in June that upheld the group's exclusion of gay
leaders and members.

*** Disasters killed 17,000 in 2000
GENEVA (AP) - Major catastrophes, including widespread flooding and
the mass killing of members of a doomsday cult, claimed 17,000 lives
in 2000 and caused losses totaling $38 billion, a company that
monitors world disasters said Wednesday. The biggest single loss of
life came from flooding in India and Bangladesh at the end of
August, where 1,200 people died, the Swiss Reinsurance Co. said in a
preliminary report on its annual catastrophe review. Incidents of
flooding were responsible for four of the top five disasters in
2000. "The number of fatalities from man-made disasters - almost
9,000 - was significantly above the average for the past decade,"
the company, widely known as SwissRe, said.

*** Strong quake shakes Kodiak Island
PALMER, Alaska (AP) - A powerful earthquake shook Kodiak Island early
Wednesday but no damage or injuries were reported. A preliminary
estimate put the magnitude of the quake at 6.9, said Paul Whitmore,
of the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center at Palmer. It was centered 70
miles southwest of Kodiak city, or 330 miles southwest of Anchorage.
"The quake was felt strongly at Kodiak, but it wasn't powerful
enough to generate a tsunami, or seismic sea wave," Whitmore said.

Pentagon says U.S. crops vulnerable to germ weapon attack=20=20
Weekend News Today=20
Lead: Leo=20
Source: CNN/AP=20
Wed Jan 10,2001 -- Germ weapons usually are viewed as a threat to U.S.=20
troops and cities, but in a new report Wednesday the Pentagon said=20
American ranches and farms also are highly vulnerable. "Attacks against=20
U.S. agricultural assets might be tempting, due to the perceived relative e=
ase=20
of attack" and the likelihood that an attacker could plausibly deny=20
responsibility, the Pentagon said in a report, "Proliferation: Threat and=20
Response."=20=20
The report, signed by Defense Secretary William Cohen as one of his last=20
acts before leaving office, outlines a wide range of threats posed by=20
biological, chemical and other weapons of mass destruction, as well as the=
=20
spread of missiles used to deliver such weapons. It updates a 1997 report o=
n=20
the same subject, but the latest version adds a section on biological agent=
s,=20
such as anthrax, that cause debilitating or deadly diseases in plants and=20
animals, such as foot and mouth disease.=20=20
"Similar to the human population, the high health status of crop and livest=
ock=20
assets in the United States creates a great vulnerability to attack with=20
biological agents," the Pentagon report said. It said highly infectious pla=
nt=20
and animal microorganisms exist outside U.S. borders and some are readily=20
transportable with little risk of detection. A germ weapon attack on U.S.=20
agriculture could disrupt the supply lines for food stocks, which in turn c=
ould=20
undermine U.S. military readiness, the report said.=20=20
Deadly virus fuels bio-terror fears=20=20
Weekend News Today=20
Lead: Leo=20
Source: BBC NEWS=20
Wed Jan 10,2001 -- Scientists who accidently created a deadly version of=20
mouse smallpox in the laboratory say lethal human viruses are only a step=20
away. The prospect of such dangerous organisms being produced relatively=20
easily have left bioterrorism experts fearful of killer global epidemics. =
=20
The Australian researchers, reports New Scientist magazine, made one=20
simple genetic change to a "mousepox" virus in an attempt to produce an=20
effective contraceptive vaccine. "Mousepox" normally causes only mild=20
illness, and when all the animals undergoing the experiment died within=20
days, they realised the potential of their discovery. They say a similar=20
change in human smallpox could produce a far more virulent strain which=20
could even be resistant to vaccines.=20=20

year, the World Health Organisation declared the disease eradicated.=20=20

Wed Jan 10,2001 -- Israel's chief rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau said on Wednesday=

Unusual Cholera epidemic spreading through southern Africa=20=20
Weekend News Today=20
Lead: faith=20
Source: AFP=20
Wed Jan 10,2001 -- Cholera is snaking through southern Africa, hitting the=
=20
rural poor who depend on contaminated rivers for their drinking water. At=20
least 140 have died as the epidemic has spread since August -- intensifying=
=20
since the turn of the year -- through South Africa (63 deaths), Mozambique=
=20
(50), Zambia (14), Swaziland (6), Tanzania (5) and Zimbabwe (2). The=20
growing number of cases has prompted Mozambique to call Wednesday for=20
a regional campaign to counter the disease. More than 50 people have died=20
of cholera since August in Mozambique, where 2,500 cases have been=20
diagnosed and the epidemic picked up pace in January. It is the most=20
severely affected country, along with South Africa, where authorities repor=
t=20
more than 63 deaths and 16,500 cases since August, mostly in the eastern=20
province of KwaZulu-Natal.=20=20
In Mozambique, 1999 was a catastrophic year, with some 1,000 cholera=20
deaths, and last year cholera linked to devastating floods caused around 10=
0=20
deaths there. South Africa's epidemic is unusual, with no major outbreak=20
reported here since 1982, despite a small number of cases every rainy=20
season. The 1982 epidemic resulted in some 25,000 people becoming=20
infected. This year, "all the equations were right" for an epidemic in Sout=
h=20
Africa, says Andrew Jamieson, a specialist in tropical diseases who advises=
=20
British Airways on health risks. That was because the rains came early, and=
=20
were heavy, and people were returning to infected areas on holiday, he said=
.=20
In South Africa, cholera was also becoming resistant to antibiotics.=20
"Ultimately," he said, "cholera is a disease which will be cured by enginee=
rs,=20
not by doctors."=20=20
Albright disturbed by US-European competition, wishes end to rivalry=20=20
Weekend News Today=20

Source: AFP=20
Wed Jan 10,2001 -- Outgoing US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright told=20
AFP in an interview Wednesday she was disturbed by continuing rivalry=20
between the United States and Europe and that both sides of the Atlantic=20
needed to come together to promote shared interests. "I wish there were not=
=20
this sense that we have to compete," Albright said as she prepared to head=
=20
off on her last official trip abroad to Spain and France and relinquish her=
post=20
in just 10 days time.=20=20
"I find it a little bit of a surprise personally how competitive the United=
States=20
and Europe are," she added, noting that the rivalry often manifested itself=
in=20
"commercial" or "pyschological" ways. The Czech-born Albright has made=20
no secret of her affinity for Europe but said the American in her was "tryi=
ng to=20
see a larger vision" and "a little concerned about the differences with=20
Europe." "I don't understand why we have them in many ways," she said,=20
maintaining that during her term in office Washington had done much to=20
support the continent as it struggled to expand democracy, put together a=20
common defense policy and a unified currency.=20=20
Despite the support Albright said the United States had offered, relations=
=20
between Washington and numerous European capitals have often been=20
strained over the past eight years on issues ranging from missile defense t=
o=20
intervention in the Balkans to the Middle East. But Albright urged the=20
incoming administration of President-elect George W. Bush to continue=20
efforts to resolve contentious issues for the sake of common ideologies and=
=20
histories. "What we're seeing is the rise of other power centers and Europe=
=20
is obviously one of them," she said. "I think to the extent which a new=20
Europe is actually a partner in helping to fulfill the responsibilities of =
an=20
increasingly complicated world, all the better."=20=20

Wed Jan 10,2001 -- Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox leaders have formed=20
a new Christian unity group. They met for the first time Jan. 5, 2001 at=20
Princeton University, proclaiming their intention to convene an important t=
wo-
week conference on Christian unity in 2004, according to UPI.=20=20
The group is unusual because it includes Catholics, evangelicals, mainline=
=20
Protestants, Pentecostals, and Orthodox Christians. It calls itself the=20
Foundation for a Conference on Faith and Order in North America. Among=20
the board's 16 members are William Keeler, Catholic archbishop of=20
Baltimore; Archbishop Dimitrios, primate of the Greek Orthodox Diocese in=20
America; evangelical Richard Mouw, president of Fuller Theological=20
Seminary; Cheryl Bridges Johns, a professor at the Church of God=20
Theological Seminary, a Pentecostal school; and Thomas Gillespie,=20
president of Princeton Theological Seminary, UPI reported. The group also=20
includes Canadian churches, and Donna Geernaert, a nun who is=20
ecumenical officer of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, was=20
elected its treasurer.=20=20
The goal is to re-energize the churches, and "this requires enhanced unity=
=20
between them," the group's document states. Unity is intrinsically related =
to=20
holiness, it said, stressing the urgency of putting Christ back into the ce=
nter=20
of church life, and putting faith before social action. A long and intense =
time=20
of study and teaching in congregations and theological schools will precede=
=20
the conference.=20=20

Wed Jan 10,2001 -- A blue-ribbon panel is calling on the United States to=20

The Real Number of Participants at the Temple Mount and Jerusalem=20
Demonstration
Friends of the Movement have reported that the media in the United=20
States had widely varying claims relating to the attendance at Monday=20
night's demonstration was. One reported 10,000, another tens of=20
thousands, another 100,000 and another 200,000.
We are so sorry that they did not report the correct figures. Even the=20
variance in the reports shows their error. We hope that this was not=20
done due to a lack of objective reporting in order to downplay the=20
importance of the demonstration. Even the leftist media in Israel=20
reported varied in their reporting with some saying more than 300,000=20
and others saying more than 350,000.=20
We are so sorry that important parts of the media does not show a great=20
love towards Israel... and do not fulfil their main task of being=20
completely objective. So often they show their support for the enemies=20
of Israel. We are sure, and we pray, that one day G=96d and history will=20
show them how big a mistake they made.
We felt that it will be right to share the right number with everyone=20
which is 500,000. We are used to the situation that in our activities or=20
other national activities, the media reports smaller numbers (sometimes=20
very much smaller) than the real number of participants in order to=20
downplay the importance of the event. We decided to always report the=20
correct numbers in our communications. We hope that in this way we shall=20
teach the media, especially those who are anti-Israeli, to be=20
objective... and to share the right facts with everyone. Nobody can make=20
this great stand of Monday night smaller than it was in all aspects and=20
not only in numbers. It was a great historical and biblical stand which=20
will never be forgotten and an important message and lesson to all the=20
anti-Israeli enemies and a great an important encouragement to the=20
Israelis and their friends all over the world. Those who participated in=20
this historical stand will never forget it.

US tests bugs, vacuum - whatever works - in Cape base cleanup
By Beth Daley, Globe Staff, 1/9/2001
It sounds more like a cheesy science-fiction plot than a plan to
clean up the poisoned Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod:
Stimulate microscopic bugs' appetite with molasses and then have them
eat explosives in the soil and water. Take machinery designed for gold
fields and modify it to literally wash contaminants from dirt. Heat up
the ground with a type of giant electric blanket and vacuum up the
chemical vapors that are released. Inject chemicals like hydrogen
peroxide into water to spark a chemical reaction that will make
pollutants disappear.

1. Sharon: Oslo is null and void
(BNI-JAN.10) In an interview with the Chabad affiliated Kfar Chabad weekly
magazine, Likud prime ministerial candidate Ariel Sharon stated that the
Oslo process is over due to the total lack of compliance on the part of
the PA. Sharon explained that the signing of Oslo was to begin a new
process, one that entailed both Israel and the PA settling differences at
the negotiating table, not in the battlefield.=20
Sharon added the agreement was buried when the PA resorted to the latest
wave of violence, with daily shooting attacks, while the Barak
administration continues to attempt to achieve a peaceful solution via the
negotiating table.
The Likud candidate explained his position regarding statements of
=93painful concessions,=94 elaborating that he will not retake areas such a=
s
Shchem (Nablus) and Jericho, that were given away to the PA under the Oslo
agreements. He explained that by not retaking the cities that have
historical significance to the Jewish people, he was making =93painful
concessions.=94=20=20

2. Wednesday morning shooting attack in Hebron
(BNI-JAN.10) Shots were fired at the Jewish Quarter of Hebron at about
8:00am Wednesday morning. The gunfire emanated from the Casbah section=20
of
the city. There were no casualties to Jewish residents or military forces.
Soldiers returned fire.
Under the Oslo process, the Casbah remains under total Israeli security
control but the governments of Israel have made the decision to restrict
Jews from entering the area. Hebron leader Noam Arnon explained that this
policy has resulted in the de facto PA control of the Casbah area which is
regularly used to launch shooting attacks against Jewish residents.=20=20
++++
3. Body found in Ashkelon school
(BNI-JAN.10) Police during the night discovered the body of a 22-year-old
male in the Yeshurun School in Ashkelon. The body did not display signs of
violence. The body was transferred to the Abu Kabir Forensic Institute. =
=20
++++
4. Five injured in MVA near Ashkelon Junction

(BNI-JAN.10) Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami has requested a meeting with

was also reported that Albright does intend to visit the Middle East prior
to stepping down from office.
Ben-Ami is visiting in Europe in an official capacity this week.=20=20=20

6. Clinton speaks with Arafat by telephone
(BNI-JAN.10) US President Bill Clinton spoke during the night with PA
Chairman Yassir Arafat according to official White House sources. The two
spoke for thirty minutes but details of the conversation were not released.
Clinton did speak with Prime Minister Ehud Barak on Monday, and it is
believed the talks surrounded the four-way security summit in Cairo
earlier in the week which was attended by US CIA Director George Tenet. =
=20
++++
7. Shahak acknowledges meeting took place with Arafat
(BNI-JAN.10) Minister of Tourism and member of the Security Cabinet Amnon
Lipkin-Shahak told Israel Radio that reports that he met during the night
with PA Chairman Yassir Arafat are accurate.=20
Shahak stated the administration was exploring all avenues to bring an end
to the daily attacks throughout Yesha and following the meeting with the
PA leader, he believed that Arafat was interested in bringing and end to
the current violent situation.
Shahak added that while he did not believe there would be a total
cessation in violent attacks, he was optimistic that there would be a
visible decline in the current hostilities.=20=20
++++
8. Suspect in custody in murder of Motti Cohen
(BNI-JAN.10) Police have announced that a suspect has been placed under
arrest in the murder of 33-year-old Motti Cohen.=20
As reported earlier, the body of Cohen was found over the weekend in
Ceasarea and there were visible signs of violence indicating he had been
murdered.=20
Police have reported the suspect is a former employee of the deceased and
he will be brought before a remand hearing on Wednesday.=20=20
++++
9. Tens arrested in police crackdown against car thieves
(BNI-JAN.10) Southern District police during the night arrested 54 persons

continue efforts to apprehend persons involved in the car thefts =96
stealing vehicles from Israel and transferring them to the PA autonomous
areas in Gaza.

soccer star from the center of the country.=20=20
++++
10. More arrests made from the village of Hussan
(BNI-JAN.10) Police during the night arrested four suspects, residents of
the Arab village of Hussan. The four are suspected of taking part in
attacks against Israeli motorists in the Bethlehem area.=20

taken part in stone-throwing attacks against Israeli motorists.=20=20
++++
11. Gadid attacked with gunfire during the night

(BNI-JAN.10) Radio Palestine reported on Wednesday morning that US=20
special
envoy to the Oslo process, Ambassador Dennis Ross, would not be visiting
the region this week as planned.=20
According to US officials in the Tel Aviv Embassy, quoted by Israel Radio,
Ross will be arriving but his date has been delayed. Mr. Ross will be
arriving on Thursday.=20=20
++++
14. PA remains oppose to US bridging proposals
(BNI-JAN.10) Despite statements of encouragements by Israeli government
officials, PA senior officials continue to issue statements rejecting
bridging proposals put forward by the White House. PA officials stated on
Wednesday that the proposals were designed to cater to the needs of
Israel, formulated together with the White House and therefore, not in the
interest of the PA.=20
Earlier in the week, a senior official stated that special envoy to the
Oslo process Ambassador Dennis Ross was not an impartial negotiator and=20
he
was favoring Israeli interests.=20=20

(BNI-JAN.10) The High Court of Justice on Wednesday morning postponed a
petition filed by the Movement for Quality Government in Israel to have
Cabinet Secretary Yitzhak Herzog removed from his position.=20
Herzog is being investigated by police for his alleged involvement in
illegal campaign funding in the 1999 election, working for the Barak for
prime minister campaign. According to police reports, Herzog has been
exercising his right to remain silent during interrogation sessions, a
move that many have found most objectionable since he is a senior civil
servant.
The High Court has ordered the state to prepare a brief explaining why it
should not insist that Herzog step down from his position for the upcoming

2. Second Hebron shooting attack on Wednesday
(BNI-JAN.10) Shortly after 11:00am, shots were fired from the Casbah area
of Hebron towards the Jewish Quarter for the second time in several hours.
There were no reported injuries.
Community spokesman Noam Arnon explained that the shots were fired from=20
a
close distance, sounding an alarm, due to the fact the area of the Casbah
was declared a closed military zone, barring Jews from entering even
though the Casbah is under IDF control.=20
Arnon explained that the lack of a Jewish presence has resulted in the PA
taking over the area in proximity of the Jewish Quarter, permitting it to
be used as a springboard for the launching of terror attacks against the
local Jewish community.=20=20

Dr. Bachrach pointed out that several times in the past, when petitions
were filed with the High Court seeking to block the release of Islamic

5. White House: Ross visit on hold
(BNI-JAN.10) Israel Radio reported at 5:00pm that the White House has
released a statement confirming that Ambassador Dennis Ross=92 visit to

Oslo process.
The special envoy to the Oslo process was scheduled to arrive this week to
make another effort to bring Israel and the PA closer to an agreement
before the end of the term of the Clinton administration.=20=20
Ross was due to arrive on Wednesday. His schedule arrival was then delayed
to Thursday but now, a definitive time was not announced.
Radio Palestine reports that Ross=92 visit will not accomplish anything and
they oppose his arrival at this time. Earlier in the week, PA officials
accused Ross of being partial to Israel, adding that his lack of

6. Peres says Jerusalem must be shared by religions
(BNI-JAN.10) Minister Shimon Peres on Wednesday stated that Jerusalem
would have to be shared by several religions, adding it did not belong to
any one religion. Speaking from India, the former prime minister pointed
out the situation vis-=E0-vis Jerusalem is a most complicated one and even =
a
political agreement would not differ religious claims to the city.
Peres elaborated, explaining the holy city represents thousands of years
of history for Jews, Christians and Moslems alike. He stressed the city
must remain open to all religions and people of all faiths must be
permitted to pray to God in their own language.=20=20

12. Ministry of Agriculture approves additional foreign laborers
(BNI-JAN.10) The Ministry of Agriculture has approved a request from
farmers to permit an additional 2,000 foreign laborers to enter Israel.
This will bring the total number of foreigners working in agriculture to
about 20,000.
The critical shortage of manpower has resulted from the PA-orchestrated
Intifada which has resulted in closures which make it impossible for PA
residents to report to work in Jewish communities.=20
In areas where there are no closures, laborers, residents of PA autonomous
areas, in many cases are afraid to work for Jewish employees under threats
of violence or death from Intifada leaders.=20=20

Jerusalem
1. WILL BARAK STEP DOWN?
Ehud Barak continues to face pressures to vacate his place in the Prime=20
Ministerial race, and allow Shimon Peres to run instead. Barak's former=20
aide, Chaim Mandel-Shaked, said today that Barak has already decided to=20
quit, but has not yet set a date; the deadline to do so is two weeks from=20
now. Barak's brother Avinoam Brug is also in favor of making way for=20
Peres, according to Mandel-Shaked, as are some Labor MKs; others, such=20
as=20
MK Yael Dayan, have said only that Barak should "consider" quitting the=20
race. The election will be held on Feb. 6th.
A Ma'ariv poll in Barak's hometown of Kokhav Ya'ir shows that even his own=
=20
neighbors don't want him as Prime Minister. The polls show that Kokhav=20
Ya'ir residents prefer Sharon by a 2-1 margin: 62% would vote for Sharon,=20
while only 31% would choose Barak. "Barak's a very nice guy," one=20
neighbor=20
said, "but I can't accept his policies." "Right and left, we will=20
unanimously support him if he wants to run for head of our local council,"=
=20
another said.
2. SHARON AND PERES
How will the Likud's Ariel Sharon, who currently leads Barak by a wide=20
margin in the polls, deal with a Peres candidacy, in case Peres in fact=20
replaces Barak? MK Limor Livnat of the Likud said that her party is=20
prepared not only for Peres, but for every campaign trick that Labor may=20
come up with: "We are saying not only that Barak failed as Prime Minister,=
=20
but also that the Labor party's entire concept [regarding the Palestinians]=
=20
has failed and collapsed - as we see that there is not only no peace, but=20
almost-daily terrorist attacks everywhere=85 Peres, too, is quite involved=
=20
in the Oslo fiasco; he is largely responsible for the Oslo approach, and=20
when terrorism intensified during his term as Prime Minister [following=20
Rabin's assassination], his strategy was to speed up the negotiations=85"
MK Livnat attempted to clarify for Arutz-7 listeners what exactly is meant=
=20
by the campaign motto, "Only Sharon Can Bring Peace:"
"First of all, there will be absolutely no negotiations while the violence=
=20
is raging. Then, once personal security is restored, we will demand that=20
the Palestinians fulfill all their previous obligations - collecting=20
illegal weapons, returning terrorists to jail, etc. We can then return to=
=20
the talks from a position of strength, not from weakness. Sharon will then=
=20
conduct the talks with his stated red lines: Jerusalem and the Jordan=20
Valley remain Israeli, etc. He has not gone into greater detail, because=20
it would be stupid to start negotiations with the Palestinians publicly and=
=20
during the campaign - whatever he would say would then just be used by the=
=20
Palestinians as a starting position beyond which they will then demand=20
more..."
3. PALESTINIAN VIOLENCE AND NOTES
Palestinians shot this morning from within the Israeli-controlled Casbah=20
market in Hevron at a nearby IDF force. No one was hurt, and the soldiers=20
returned fire. The army does not allow Jews to enter the area, which is=20
very near the Avraham Avinu neighborhood... The Gush Katif community of=20
Gadid, in Gaza, was again attacked with gunfire last night; no one was=20
hurt, and IDF soldiers returned fire... This afternoon, Israeli cars were=
=20
shot at near Kadim in northern Shomron, as well as further south, between=20
Itamar and Elon Moreh. No one was hurt... Israeli soldiers shot and hit=20
two Palestinians who attacked them with large rocks near Jenin... Israeli=
=20
police arrested four Arabs near Husan in the Bethlehem region, on suspicion=
=20
of throwing rocks and instigating rioting. This brings the number of such=20
arrests in Husan over the past three months to 57...
The Arab violence at Al Hader - between Efrat and Bethlehem - resumed this=
=20
afternoon, for the second straight day; several Israeli cars were damaged=20
by rocks, and Palestinians are now rioting against Israeli soldiers. The=20
clashes began yesterday after the IDF arrested the #2 Tanzim terrorist in=20
the area, Nidal Abiat, who is responsible for many of the Palestinian=20
shooting incidents there.
Other Palestinian notes:
Yasser Abed Rabbo and Hanan Ashrawi demand that Ehud Barak and=20
several IDF=20
officers be tried in an international war crimes court. The Palestinian=20
officials accuse them of "cold-blooded murder" of the Palestinian=20
terrorist leaders who the Israelis targeted and killed for the many=20
terrorist attacks they coordinated...
Marwan Bargouti, Secretary-General of Fatah in Judea and Samaria,=20
declared=20
today that Fatah - which is considered the "moderate" arm of the PLO -=20
would never accept a final agreement that does not clearly stipulate the=20
right of return for millions of Arab refugees from 1948. "Jerusalem and=20
the refugees are our red lines," he said. "We prefer the peace option, but=
=20
the way of armed struggle always remains..."
Jerusalem Mufti Sheik Arama Tsabari issued a religious ruling earlier this=
=20
week stating that the Temple Mount, the Western Wall and its adjoining=20
plaza are all properties of the Moslem Waqf, and that "there can be no=20
compromise on this matter." Tsabari was appointed to his post by the=20
Palestinian Authority, although he said that his ruling was not politically=
=20
motivated. The ruling applies to "seven stories above and below" the holy=
=20
areas...
4. IS BEREAVEMENT AN ELECTORAL ISSUE?
National Religious Party head Rabbi Yitzchak Levy sent off a sharp letter=20
to Meretz MK Zahava Gal'on today, in which he protests her use of terrorist=
=20
victims for political gain. Gal'on read aloud yesterday, from the Knesset=
=20
podium, a letter written by a man who lost his son in a battle in=20
Lebanon. The father said that Sharon, who was Defense Minister in=20
Menachem=20
Begin's government during the 1982 Peace for Galilee War, is "the man who=20
threw thousands of innocent Israeli boys into the inferno of fire and death=
=20
of the national war of deception in Lebanon." Rabbi Levy wrote to Gal'on,=
=20
"We dare not count the dead on the way to the polling station, and we must=
=20
not do business at the expense of the bereaved families. As a bereaved=20
father [whose daughter Ayelet HaShachar was killed in a Jerusalem car=20
bomb=20
blast several weeks ago], I suggest that you apologize."
The Sharon campaign has collected much damaging information against=20
Barak=20
and his actions during the Lebanon War - including in the failed Sultan=20
Yaaqub battle he commanded - but has decided to bury it for now, "unless=20
the Barak campaign begins wild accusations against Sharon." In March=20
1982,=20
three months before the Peace for Galilee War began, then-Maj.-Gen. Ehud=20
Barak sent a letter to Sharon in which, Likud sources say, Barak "supports=
=20
the planned war in Lebanon, and even proposes extending it to=20
Syrian-controlled territory."
MK Gal'on's campaign ploy has touched off a public debate as to whether=20
families whose sons and relatives have been killed in Lebanon or by=20
terrorists may be enlisted as campaign ammunition. Some of the families=20
say that they do not wish to be brought into the public debate, while=20
others feel that their bereavement is a legitimate issue for national=20
political discussion.
5. BARAK DENIES COLLABORATING WITH U.N.
The Prime Minister's Bureau released a terse one-sentence statement today,=
=20
denying any basis to "reports [that] Prime Minister Barak requested that US=
=20
President Bill Clinton initiate an appeal to the United Nations Security=20
Council." The reference was to an accusation by Ariel Sharon yesterday=20
that Barak had pressured the Americans to get the UN to ratify current=20
plans for an Israeli-Palestinian agreement.
Sharon told his party's Knesset faction yesterday that one of Barak's=20
staffers had asked Clinton to anchor his proposals for the division of=20
Jerusalem and the evacuation of almost all of Judea and Samaria and its=20
Jewish communities in a UN decision. "This is unprecedented in its=20
severity," Sharon said, "and something that could complicate Israel for=20
years... It could lead the UN to impose sanctions on Israel. This is the=
=20
first time in Israeli history that an Israeli Prime Minister has agreed to=
=20
allow the UN to make decisions about Israel's future. And it is being done=
=20
only for electoral considerations..."
Despite the denial by the Prime Minister's Bureau, when Dr. Aaron Lerner of=
=20
IMRA <"www.imra.org.il"> asked Barak's spokeswoman Meirav Parsi-Tzadok=20
what=20
is the Prime Minister's stand regarding the "bringing of a summary before=20
the UN or some other international body before the Israeli public has had=20
its say," she refused to provide a direct answer.
6. KACH MEMBERS ACCUSE: "POLICE HARASSING US"
Tiran Pollack, a member of Kach (Israel's continuation of Rabbi Meir=20
Kahane's Jewish Defense League), says that in the past few days, ever=20
since=20
the double murder by Palestinian terrorists of Rabbi Binyamin and Talia=20
Kahane outside Ofrah, the police have been harassing him and other Kach=20
activists. Speaking with Arutz-7 today, Pollack said that the police have=
=20
confiscated "Torah portion sheets written by the late Rabbi Binyamin, may=20
G-d avenge his blood, which he used to distribute weekly all over the=20
country. They have even confiscated pictures of Rabbi Meir Kahane, and=20
even solicitation envelopes that youngsters were distributing at the giant=
=20
Jerusalem rally on behalf of the six new Kahane orphans..." [Donations can=
=20
be sent to the Kahane Fund, Post Office Box 61379, Jerusalem, Israel.]
Pollack said, "The police are following us, photographing us, and depriving=
=20
us of our basic right to privacy... The only crimes that we have been=20
accused of - I'm referring to myself, Baruch Marzel, Itamar Ben-Gvir, Noam=
=20
Federman - are those of 'public protest' and the like; why should we be=20
treated as if we present a severe danger to the public? We demand that=20
this cease! Wherever I go, the people with me are in danger of the police=
=20
asking them for identification; when I go to a protest, policemen come and=
=20
ask for my identification card, as well as that of the people accompanying=
=20
me, and they write down the details - this must stop! We plan to stand=20
outside the police station in the Russian Compound today, and present them=
=20
with a rope and a bulls-eye target, demanding that they either arrest us,=20
shoot us, hang us in the public square - or stop this harassment!"
The situation appears to be no different in the United States. A large=20
protest rally is planned in New York next Sunday against the U.S.=20
government's raid of the Hatikva Jewish Identity Center last week. Only=20
three days after the terrorist murder of Rabbi Binyamin Zev Kahane and his=
=20
wife Talia, some 30 FBI agents seized educational materials connected with=
=20
Rabbi Meir Kahane's teachings. The demonstrators will claim that the raid=
=20
is a blatant violation of the group's freedom of speech, expression, and=20
religion.
7. HUNGER STRIKERS INTO ELEVENTH DAY
Tzvi Slonim, the organizer of a group of hunger strikers that has now grown=
=20
to 39, provided some background on the protest to Arutz-7 today:
"We have been striking for eleven days now, at Jerusalem's City Hall in=20
Safra Square. The group is quite varied, and includes army generals in=20
reserves, professors, settlers from Judea, Samaria, and other areas of the=
=20
country... Basically, we are saying 'yes' to true Zionism - we demand that=
=20
Barak stop talking with the Americans and Palestinians, in light of the=20
minority support he has in the Knesset and public, and especially when=20
violence and shooting are still going on. Jerusalem, of course, is also a=
=20
demand of ours: He must not touch it! "
Slonim also organized the public hunger strike last July against the Camp=20
David summit, as well as the countrywide tour of the bombed-out Kfar Darom=
=20
school bus. This was the bus that was attacked by Palestinians, and in=20
which two teachers from Kfar Darom were killed, three children of one=20
family lost limbs, and five other children were wounded; it was then put on=
=20
display as a way of alerting the populace to the severity of the security=20
situation. Slonim said, "We note with sorrow that the other media are not=
=20
giving coverage to our hunger strike, even though they know about it - they=
=20
were here en-masse last week when Binyamin Netanyahu was here,=20
together=20
with 500 schoolchildren from Kedumim. The world media talk about us, as=20
do=20
the Israeli papers in English, but the Hebrew media here are simply=20
ignoring us with great unfairness." Slonim concluded his talk by inviting=
=20
the public to "come and show solidarity and even join the strike!"
8. MITCHELL COMMITTEE ON MOUNT
A professional staff of the Mitchell Committee - the international body=20
charged with investigating the outbreak of violence in what has become=20
known as the Rosh HaShanah Arab Assault - visited the Temple Mount=20
yesterday, in order to learn about the disputed site. The Temple Mount has=
=20
been the world's holiest site for Judaism for almost 3,700 years; it became=
=20
holy to the budding new Moslem religion when a mosque was built there=20
almost 2,400 years later. Palestinians claim that Likud leader Ariel=20
Sharon's visit to the Mount in September sparked the violence, but Israeli=
=20
officials, including Prime Minister Barak, have noted that the violence=20
began even before the visit, and that the violence was well-planned in=20
advance.
9. KLEINER VS. "PEACE CABINET"
MK Michael Kleiner, who represents the Knesset's Herut faction (which was=20
founded by MK Benny Begin prior to the last election, and which later=20
merged with Moledet and Tekumah to form the National Union party; Begin=20
resigned from the Knesset shortly after the election, and Moledet and=20
Tekumah joined up with Yisrael Beiteinu to form a 7-MK faction), protests=20
the use of Barak's term "peace cabinet." In a letter to Attorney-General=20
Elyakim Rubenstein, Kleiner writes,=20=09
"Recently the prime minister has been convening a body that has been=20
given=20
the label 'peace cabinet,' and which deliberates matters relating to=20
Israel's peace process policies, Clinton's proposals, and perhaps also=20
other matters. This body, which has the appearance of a government body=20
and also bears the name of a government body (cabinet), has members who=20
are=20
also Members of Knesset.
"Firstly, it is improper that a government body should include Knesset=20
members, as this infringes on the principle of the separation of=20
authorities. Secondly, this body does not have the legal standing of a=20
government cabinet, and its name may deceive the public into thinking that=
=20
the decisions of this body have the same standing as government decisions=20
or obligate the government. Thirdly, it is possible that the decisions=20
reached in this forum may at least informally obligate the Government of=20
Israel...
"I would appreciate it if you would immediately intervene to put an end to=
=20
the use of the deceptive name 'peace cabinet.' If the prime minister is=20
interested in a political forum of coalition members that includes both=20
members in the government and others who are not members of the=20
government=20
to advise him and support him - this is legitimate. But the public has the=
=20
right to know that this is a political forum, and not a government=20
forum. I would likewise appreciate it if you would instruct the prime=20
minister to avoid having discussions that should rightfully take place in=20
the real cabinet, with the participation of people who are not part of the=
=20
government and who do not bear ministerial responsibility." (With thanks=20
to IMRA)
***SPECIAL INSERT:
Excerpts from Mayor Ehud Olmert's speech at Monday night's giant rally for=
=20
Jerusalem:
"I have never felt deeper excitement than that which I feel now, as I gaze=
=20
upon you spread out all over the streets of Jerusalem, crowded,=20
enthusiastic, and emotional as you are. I am deeply moved, because this is=
=20
not a protest, or a political gathering - this is the true manifestation of=
=20
the connection that the Jewish People feels towards its eternal=20
capital! You have come from all over the country tonight to say to the=20
whole world: We are here, we will remain here, because this city is the=20
basis of our existence, the subject of our longings, the unfulfilled dream=
=20
throughout our history... This city was always the center of our national=
=20
longings. What held our nation together was the hope to return to it and=20
to stay here forever and ever.
"This gathering is not against anyone, and we have not come to protest=20
against anything. We have come to express in the most clear and=20
straightforward way our deep bonds to this city and what it=20
symbolizes. And standing out from amongst all its neighborhoods is the=20
Temple Mount, the place to which the People of Israel always prayed thrice=
=20
a day. Turning towards it, longing for it, crying for it, giving their=20
soul for it, the Jews always thought of one place: this mountain, upon and=
=20
inside which still lay the remnants of our Holy Temples....
"Throughout our history, we have always prayed for and sought=20
peace. There is no people who wants peace more than we do, none have=20
sacrificed for it more than we have. But no nation has ever been asked to=
=20
sacrifice its most important treasures in order to appease another=20
people! And we too, no matter how dedicated to peace we may be, we will=20
not give up our most precious and important national treasures of Jewish=20
history! For us, there is one and only one city! It will accept and=20
tolerate all its residents, from all nationalities and religions - but it=20
is one city, not divided, not in pieces - just one entire and whole city,=20
the capital of the Jewish People!
"Dear friends, I feel that in your name and on your behalf, I must say=20
something to a man who in the past eight years has been very involved in=20
everything that is happening here, whose friendship for Israel have learned=
=20
to recognize. I allow myself to turn from here, the heart of Jerusalem, to=
=20
U.S. President Clinton in friendship and with modesty, and say: You were a=
=20
great friend of Israel for eight years. It would be such a shame if all=20
that will remain of these friendship-filled years would be the fact that=20
you, Bill Clinton, will be the first President in U.S. history who has=20
proposed the division of Jerusalem! I ask you, even now, Mr.=20
President: Don't be the first American President to raise his hand to=20
divide Jerusalem! Jerusalem will not be divided! Don't be the one who=20
enters history as the one who proposed it. We are a nation with a memory=20
of thousands of years, we don't forget anything, and we don't forgive those=
=20
who don't respect our deep feelings for our capital city... We never ever=
=20
forget those who dare to raise their hand against our most precious=20
assets. Please, Mr. President, think about it again."
"In this greatest of all rallies that have ever convened in this city, let=
=20
us hold hands together, with a feeling of internal unity, love, dedication,=
=20
and great determination, that we will act responsibly, with restraint, but=
=20
without hesitation, so that Israel will continue to control this city as it=
=20
must be forever - one city, united and whole! Jerusalem, I pledge!"
