Student sues college for psychiatric abuse
Sent to mental ward after he objected to play depicting Jesus as=20
homosexual=20

A junior at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., is suing=20
university officials for allegedly having him involuntarily committed=20
to a psychiatric ward following a dispute over a play depicting Jesus=20
Christ as a homosexual.=20
According to Brian Fahling, an attorney with the AFA Law Center in=20
Tupelo, Miss., which is handling the case, Michael A. Marcavage was=20
detained after he "initiated a Christian response" to the university=20
theater department's decision to stage "Corpus Christi," a play that=20
made its debut on Broadway in 1998 and depicts Jesus as a homosexual=20
who has sex with his disciples.=20
In the play, Jesus was eventually crucified for being "king of the=20
queers." When it broke on Broadway, the play received national=20
criticism.=20
Marcavage, a former White House West Wing intern, immediately=20
complained about the play to the dean of the School of Communications=20
and Theater, as well as the president of the university -- whom=20
Fahling said has since left Temple -- when theater officials=20
announced it in the fall of 1999 .=20
Besides informing those officials of the play's content, Fahling said=20
Marcavage -- in a prepared statement -- admitted posting fliers all=20
over the university "so that all Christians on campus would be aware=20
of this horrible play," and made plans to stage a protest outside the=20
theater when the play opened.=20
In the days that followed, Marcavage said he had a number of meetings=20
with William Bergman, vice president of campus safety, and Carl=20
Bittenbender, director of campus safety. Though he had initially=20
planned to protest, Bergman and Bittenbender eventually convinced=20
Marcavage that protests might lead to confrontations between rival=20
student factions. Marcavage then agreed to cancel his protest.=20
Instead, he asked officials for permission to stage a Christian=20
outreach to students; Fahling said the university security officials=20
gave him permission for that.=20
Marcavage, in his statement to Fahling, said Bergman promised him a=20
stage would be provided to help him with his outreach program, but=20
later the same day, Bittenbender allegedly called Marcavage to tell=20
him that the stage "might be out of the question." The campus safety=20
director then asked the student to meet with him and Bergman the next=20
morning at the vice president's office.=20
At that meeting, Marcavage said Bergman told him a stage would be too=20
expensive to provide and therefore, one would not be set up for the=20
outreach program. Marcavage said he then offered to pay for the stage=20
himself, but was again told no -- without further explanation.=20
Exasperated, Marcavage said he then "excused himself, went to the=20
bathroom, locked the door and prayed about what he should do next,"=20
AFA officials said.=20
According to the student, Bergman followed him to the bathroom and=20
began pounding on the door, demanding that he open it and resume the=20
discussion about the stage. Marcavage said he opened the door=20
and "told him that I believed our conversation was over."=20
Next, according to Marcavage, Bergman "physically" forced him back=20
into the vice president's office and "pushed me into a chair and held=20
me with his arm." Fahling said Marcavage asked to leave but=20
Bergman "allegedly refused to allow it."=20
"Attempting to rise, [Marcavage] said the vice president tripped him=20
to the floor," then was "manhandled" to a nearby couch by both=20
men "where they held him down."=20
Within moments, Marcavage said, a Temple University police officer=20
arrived and handcuffed him. Then, "Marcavage was taken by police ...=20
to the Emergency Crisis Center at Temple University Hospital," AFA=20
officials told WorldNetDaily.=20
According to Fahling, under Pennsylvania law, a person that is=20
involuntarily committed for a psychological evaluation "has to be a=20
clear threat to himself or a clear threat to others," though he and=20
Marcavage deny that the student "in any way" fits the criteria.=20
Fahling said on-site interviews at the university with fellow=20
students who personally know Marcavage -- including one who is a=20
registered nurse and saw him that morning before his meeting with=20
officials -- "indicated that he is not the kind of person" who would=20
engage in behavior requiring a mandatory mental examination.=20
Yet, at the crisis center, Bittenbender allegedly signed a statement=20
describing Marcavage as "severely mentally disabled"; that he=20
represented a "clear and present danger to others"; that he=20
had "inflicted or attempted to inflict serious bodily harm on=20
another" within the past month; and that he "has attempted suicide" --
all of which constituted a "reasonable probability of suicide unless=20
treatment was afforded" him.=20
Fahling said Bittenbender concluded his statement by asserting that=20
Marcavage was "in need of involuntary examination and treatment."=20
"When I was first told about this case, I found it hard to believe,"=20
Fahling told WorldNetDaily. "I thought it was something out of=20
the 'Twilight Zone.'"=20
He said that Marcavage was not found to be mentally distressed or=20
exhibiting any behavior that matched the admission statement given by=20
Bittenbender. "He was released three hours later -- and that was=20
largely because it took [hospital staff] a while to get to him."=20
Fahling said Dr. Jose Villaluz of the clinic staff did examine=20
Marcavage "because, per state law, they are required to. But he=20
didn't find anything wrong with him."=20
The AFA attorney said documents provided by Marcavage show that=20
Villaluz noted in his evaluation report that the student was "not in=20
need of involuntary treatment."=20
Fahling added that when Marcavage was being led out of Bergman's=20
office by police, a university staff psychologist -- Dr. Denise=20
Walton -- was on hand and commented that she couldn't understand why=20
the student was being involuntarily detained.=20
In a separate statement, Fahling said Walton wrote that she had=20
seen "no overt sign that [Marcavage] was about to harm himself or=20
others."=20
"This is a young man of some substance," Fahling said. "I believe his=20
story is genuine. This kid is solid as a rock."=20
After being released, Marcavage said he tried to file a complaint=20
with the university police department, but was rebuffed and told=20
officers could not take a complaint against Bergman because he "is=20
our boss."=20
While still at the police station, Bergman arrived and allegedly told=20
Marcavage that no report would be filed "because no crime had been=20
committed," the AFA Law Center said.=20
"His only recourse was to file a report with the Philadelphia Police=20
Department," said the center, but it was unclear if Marcavage made=20
that attempt.=20
However, the student did try to complain through other university=20
channels, but after those also failed, he made the decision to=20
contact the law center and file suit.=20
"Besides being a college student on the Dean's List, Michael was a=20
White House intern with security clearance, is founder and president=20
of a ministry called Protect the Children, president of his own=20
business, and a volunteer who has worked with Campus Crusade for=20
Christ and gone overseas with Feed the Children," Fahling said.=20
"This is a good Christian kid who wanted to stand up for Jesus, and=20
instead was handcuffed and dragged to a mental hospital as if he'd=20
been seeing pink elephants," he added.=20
Efforts to contact the university were unsuccessful.=20
Fahling did not disclose the amount of settlement Marcavage is=20
seeking. He said Bergman and Bittenbender are named as co-defendants=20
in the suit.=20

Jerusalem and the Jews
by Joseph Farah
=A9 2001 WorldNetDaily.com=20
http://wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=3D21221
One of the many fanciful claims behind the Mideast crisis is that=20
Jerusalem has always been an Arab city.=20
The latest official rhetoric from Yasser Arafat's Palestinian=20
Authority even goes so far as to suggest that there never was a=20
Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.=20
Such characterizations are hardly worthy of addressing, yet, as long=20
as one of the principals involved in the dispute adamantly denies the=20
historical facts, they must be addressed.=20
The truth is that it is the Arab presence in the land before the=20
nation of Israel was reformed by United Nations mandate in 1948 that=20
is being exaggerated -- particularly in Jerusalem.=20
A travel guide to Palestine and Syria, published in 1906 by Karl=20
Baedeker, illustrates the fact that, even when the Islamic Ottoman=20
Empire ruled the region, the Muslim population in the city was=20
minimal.=20
The book estimates the total population of the city at 60,000, of=20
whom 7,000 were Muslims, 13,000 were Christians and 40,000 were Jews.=20
"The number of Jews has greatly risen in the last few decades, in=20
spite of the fact that they are forbidden to immigrate or to possess=20
landed property," the book states.=20
Even though the Jews were persecuted, still they came to Jerusalem=20
and represented the overwhelming majority of the population as early=20
as 1906.=20
Why was the Muslim population so low? After all, we're told that=20
Jerusalem is the third holiest city in Islam. Surely, if this were a=20
widely held belief in 1906, more of the devout would have settled=20
there.=20
The truth is that the Jewish presence in Jerusalem and throughout the=20
Holy Land persisted throughout its bloody history, as is documented=20
in Joan Peters' milestone history on the origins of the Arab-Jewish=20
conflict in the region, "From Time Immemorial."=20
First published in 1984, Peters' book was a best-seller -- and for=20
good reason. It shatters many of the Middle East myths that are still=20
shaping international public policy and the so-called "peace=20
process."=20
A vicious disinformation campaign followed publication of the=20
monumental book. That's one reason you'll be fortunate if you can=20
find one dusty, old copy today tucked away on the shelf of a large=20
used book store. (The good news is that you can now get a freshly=20
printed copy of the 600-page tome from WorldNetDaily.)=20
It is absolutely must-reading for anyone interested in understanding=20
the conflict that threatens nearly every day to escalate into a world=20
war. The truth is sometimes hard to accept. But truth is the only=20
reliable foundation for peace.=20
The Muslim claim to Jerusalem is based on what is written in the=20
Koran. Unfortunately, the city is never mentioned by name. The=20
closest it comes to a reference is in Sura 17:1, which refers to=20
the "furthest mosque."=20
Today, many Arabs claim this is a reference to the Al Aqsa Mosque --=20
the place where Allah supposedly took Mohammed for a journey and the=20
site from which the prophet of Islam reputedly ascended into heaven.=20
The current Arab uprising in Jerusalem is called the Al Aqsa Intifida=20
and centers around this claim. But is it legitimate?=20
Mohammed died in 632 AD. At the time, Jerusalem was a Christian city.=20
It was captured by Khalif Omar six years after Mohammed's death.=20
Prior to the capture, the Church of Saint Mary of Justinian stood on=20
the Temple Mount. There was no mosque in the entire city.=20
The Dome of the Rock was built in 691. Twenty years later, the Church=20
of Saint Mary was converted into a mosque with the familiar dome on=20
top. It was named Al Aqsa, so it would sound like the "furthest=20
mosque" mentioned in the Koran.=20
That's the basis of the Islamic claim to Jerusalem and the Temple=20
Mount. Yet, even some top Israeli officials, if ever so briefly,=20
flirted with the idea of compromising on the Jewish claim to this=20
historic and spiritual epicenter of Judaism in a fanciful bid for=20
peace through appeasement.=20
As Joan Peters reminds us in "From Time Immemorial," it was=20
only "politically" -- through military force -- that the Jews ever=20
lost their land. They never abandoned it physically, nor did they=20
renounce their claim to the nation -- the only continuous claim that=20
exists. Once again, only politics -- and the temptation to pursue a=20
false peace at any price -- threatens the Jews claim on their eternal=20
capital.=20

Time Immemorial," is once again available -- both online and through=20

Is the Left Predicting a Religious War in America?
By Chuck Morse
chuckm@chuckmorse.com
While I have not yet seen articles on this, two left-wing friends
asserted to me, recently, that "everyone" knows that the Nation is
headed for a colossal religious war. These friends are highly
educated, cultured, well read, witting, true believers in
the "progressive" Socialist faith. They look at me, incredulously and
sneeringly, when I inform them that this news hasn't reached me at
this point. One friend speaks with a poignant expression on her face
and a far-away look in her eye. Her mood can only be described
as "fascist". She speculates that she may not live long enough to
witness the great cataclysm, but she speaks, with a sense of absolute
certainty, about the violent bloodbath that will occur. The
delusional theory that is being espoused is that "fundamentalist"
Christians are planning to impose, by force of government,
Christianity on the United States.
When I gently press for a shred of proof, all I get is a vague
reference to the U.S. Congress passing a resolution for a day
honoring Jesus. I heard them mumble the name "Strom Thurmond" under
their breath, and speak, in conspiratorial tones, about "right wing"
congressmen going back to their districts and giving speeches that
were different than those they would deliver in Washington. They
darkly refer to religion running rampant in the world to the point
where governments were being left no other option than having to
crack down on proselytizing. They blame religion on the conflict in
the Middle East. They imply a connection between this international
religious "menace" and increased proselytizing in America. Worst of
all, for them, is that religion is responsible for the killing of
abortion doctors and protests at abortion clinics. After all, who
else would be behind this conspiracy to "outlaw" the aborting of
human fetuses?
Is this nightmare scenario emanating solely from the fecund
imagination of a couple of delusional paranoids, or, is this a new
party line emerging from left-wing theoreticians and pundits? Would
this drama, I ask, involve secret Christian moles infiltrating our
government and reporting to some shadowy controlling authority at,
say, Bob Jones University? Is Jesse Helms sending coded messages to
the Hezbollah? Perhaps Ken Starr, a religious man don't you know, was
an agent of the 700 Club. Maybe Sen. Chuck Shumer should convene a
congressional committee where he would subpoena witnesses who would
be asked, under oath, are you or have you ever been
a "fundamentalist" Christian?
History teaches that this bizarre fantasy should not be dismissed as
merely someone's idea of a sick joke. The left has a long and
infamous history of predicting war, and violence, which has, at
times, turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophesy. They usually
instigate the violence. From the French Revolution to the Russian
Revolution, the left has subverted and perverted genuine organic
struggles toward freedom and liberty. In these two cases, and
countless others, they were able to harness a creative and moral
liberation movement and turn it on it's proverbial head by effecting
a regression toward a worse form of totalitarianism than had existed
previously. The French Revolution, inspired by the American
Revolution, once co-opted by left-wing forces, was turned into the
Reign of Terror and the Napoleonic Autocracy. The Russian Revolution,
a move toward genuine Republican government, was overthrown by
Lenin's Bolshevik coup resulting in the most totalitarian and bloody
regime in history. The Black Book of Communism documents the
liquidation of approximately 100 million people at the hands of left-
wing Communist regimes, four times as many as their close ideological
cousins, the Fascist dictatorships.
The left has predicted war in this country before and has exerted
great efforts toward creating that war. In the 1930's there were
predictions of an "inevitable" class war. In the 1960's it was
an "inevitable" race war. In the 1930's, the left attempted to
harness the labor movement, a conservative movement advocating
greater ownership by workers, by infiltrating unions and using them
to create "proletarian" revolution. In the 1960's, again, the left
attempted to take over the civil rights movement, a conservative,
essentially Christian movement, for the purpose of creating race war.
Thus, thanks to the left, this great moral movement turned to riots,
burning of cities, and the Black Panthers, a criminal Marxist militia.
Thanks to American traditions of freedom, liberty, and private
ownership, the left failed overall in this country, but, they did
achieve some notable successes from their twisted perspective. They
were able to use both the movements of the 1930's and 1960's, and the
well meaning people who participated in those movements, to move this
country toward a more centralized, authoritarian form of government.
They were able to place themselves in positions of authority in this
increased bureaucracy where they would be in a position to wield a
greater power over various aspects of our lives while enriching
themselves in the process. Each time the left ratchets up government
control, their propaganda instruments take steps to insure that the
populace is fooled by the notion that it was they, the left, who
saved the day by averting this "inevitable" war looming on the
horizon.
At the very core of the leftist faith is violence and "struggle" to
achieve a utopian paradise where mankind is "transformed" into
a "collective", free of such "false" superstitions as individuality,
property, family, belief in a creator, and self government. Marx
himself, lays it out in the Communist Manifesto: "The history of all
hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles". The
word "struggle" is a euphemism for war. The red in the Communist flag
symbolizes the human blood that will be shed in order to achieve
their great and glorious new social order. In his soul, every leftist
prays for that violent eruption that will be required to "sweep
away", to borrow another Marxian slogan, the existing, "false" social
order. The prayer for religious war, an idea that my friends, and
most leftists, context of meaning, serves a dual purpose. The war
will destroy the "great Satan", which is our capitalist Republic, and
give cause for the annihilation of those implacable enemies, G-d
fearing believers.

The FBI is currently searching the Hatikva Jewish Identity Center in
Brooklyn New York, in search for any records of the pro-Kahane Jewish
Center.
The search is being conducted by 30 FBI agents who received a search
warrant to search and sieze all computers and other records, videos,
tapes and any Kahane materials.
Mike Guzofsky, the Director of the Center who was present for part of
the search will be holding a Press Conference at the Hatikva Center
at 2:00 PM
Find here a backround article written which explains the obsession of
the U.S. governments with the Kahane movement, a group dedicated to
the legal and peaceful publishing of the Torah views and ideology of
the late Rabbis Meir and Binyamin Kahane.
Guzofsky, who will be issuing his formal response at the 2:00 PM
Press Conference said, "No government ever succeeded in silencing
ideas. We will continue to speak and write our truth. We must
continue to speak and offer the only sane program that could save
Israel. This is about ideas, free speech and the right and obligation
to speak Torah publicly. This is about the very survival of the
Jewish nation. How shameful that after the brutal murder of the
Kahanes, the government now pounces on those who do no more than
distribute his writings and essays. How sick that they try and kill
Kahane, once again. This is nothing more than an effort to hamper the
operations and growth of law abiding Americans who wish to study and
teach the authentic Jewish idea. This is a decree against all Jews
and the rights of Jews to study the Jewish religion. This will
backfire. And we will emerge with greater conviction and all the
stronger. People will now understand just how right we have been."

WHY THEY KILLED KAHANE BEFORE HE WAS MURDERED
The True Danger of Kahane
In wake of the many questions surrounding the recent barbaric
assassination/murder of Binyamin and Talya Kahane, the time has come
to reexamine the extraordinary tactics used by the Israeli and
American governments to silence Binyamin Zev Kahane. The excessive use
of undemocradic and draconian measures to figuratively kill Kahane and
prevent him from speaking openly, prior to his recent assassination is
unparralleled in Israeli and American history, with exception to his
father, Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was also assassinated under mysterious
circumstances, 10 years ago. The obssessive pursuit of Binyamin Zev
Kahane in the months and years preceding his assassination coupled
with some troubling questions connected to the murder, brings out the
obvious question asked by all: Professional hit or random killing?
What made those against Kahane strive so fiercely, more so today than
ever before, to silence Kahane's ideas and views? Why did Israel ban
Binyamin Kahane from fielding a slate for Knesset while Ahmid Tibi, a
key Arafat advisor, and other anti-Israel Arabs sit and incite the
crowds to violence from their Knesset podium? What motivated the
Highest Court of Israel to convict Kahane of sedition and incitement
to racism when he called upon the Israeli government to send the IDF
rather than Lebanon into Um-El-Fahem to retaliate against the Arab
terrorists who came from there? What explanation could be given to
Amazon.com's recent blacklisting of Kahane.org at the same time that
Amazon.com openly markets the racist "Protocols of the Elder's of
Zion" and Hitler's "Mein Kampf"? What justification could be offered
by Scorpions.net for shutting down Kahane.org? Is there a Nazi or Arab
terrorist who does not enjoy free speech over the channels of the
internet?
When the cause of one's fears dies, the fear eventually fades away.
But when it comes to the militant Rabbi Meir Kahane, even ten years
after his assassination, that is not the case. The mere mention of
his name still sends shock waves through the bodies of his rivals;
Gentile and Jew alike, in Israel and the U.S. The time has come to
make a rational attempt to define the true danger of Kahane. Now,
after the tragic assassination of Binyamin Kahane and his wife Talia,
the question is all the more potent.
While it is true that Kahane Chai, Kach and the Judean Voice
erroneously appear side by side with the Hamas and the Khmer Rouge on
the State Department's terrorist list, nobody, with the inclusion of
the State Dept. themselves, takes the bizarre Kahane terrorist
classification seriously.
In a recent article published in the New York Times, Dean Murphy
describes the range of Kahane activities as, "internet providers,
magazine publishers, community center operators, poster (hangers) and
a mail order business." Why then are the Kahanists being treated as
terrorists? Why is Kahane Chai and the Judean Voice Magazine really on
the terrorist list? Why are the left-wing civil liberty activists so
silent when it comes to the most elementary constitutional rights of
Kahane supporters? The zeal shown by the left-wing liberal
establishment on behalf of the Klan, Farrakhan and the Nazis, vanishes
when it comes to the pure right of free speech on the part of Israel's
most outspoken defenders: those in the Kahane camp.
What is really bothering the policy makers in Jerusalem and in
Washington? What is the real danger of Kahane, that makes even the
right-wing Brooklyn based Jewish Press and Arutz Sheva - the "settler"
radio station so scared and hesitant to even utter the word Kahane,
even in the context of news?
Why did the mass media champion the cause of the Otpor and exult their
ousting of Milosevic in Serbia (New York Times, 11/26/2000) as heroic
democratic revolution, and when the Kahane group employs the exact
same non-violent tactics, they are labeled "terrorists"?
It is simple. In Serbia, it was millions of U.S. dollars being used to
break Milosevic so as to uproot one of the last obstacles to NATO and
allow full U.S. domination of the region. In Israel, the Kahane
movement is a democratic grassroots revolution headed by Binyamin
Kahane that had the power to break Israeli dependence and obedience to
Washington. This is the real reason that unprecedented measures had
been taken to silence Kahane views, whether by the American government
or the Israeli parties on both the right and left of the political
spectrum. Both Likud and Labor lack the courage to take the necessary
steps to secure the survival of Israel out of fear of angering the
American government.
In this lies the crux of the obsession with Kahane. This is the real
reason for the inclusion of Kahane Chai on the terrorist list in the
first place. The only people who could potentially bring about a
change of course and the abrogation of the Oslo process are the Kahane
people. The only people who could influence the nation of Israel to
abandon the suicidal path being dictated to Israel by Washington are
the Kahane people. Not through terror, but through words of truth.
And every act of Arab terror only proves our point more. Every Arab
bullet that penetrates a Jewish body in Israel pierces the minds and
hearts of thousands of Jews in Israel and around the world. Jews are
now eager to listen to an alternative to Oslo. And the Kahanists are
the only ones who offer an alternative political/ideological program.
More and more Israelis are beginning to understand that they have two
choices; Arafat or Kahane.
Yes, the Kahane course will probably lead to temporary isolation of
Israel. Yes, this would be a catastrophe for policy makers in the
State Department who remain biased against Israel in their efforts to
court Arab oil and other interests. However, we will not be deterred
from speaking out and from proposing the only programs that could save
Israel before it is too late. Anything short of Israel annexing all
the "territories", abrogating Oslo, and expelling the hostile Arabs
from Israel, will lead to the destruction of Israel. Steps like these
require faith in G-d, not in Washington. They also require a reversal
of Jewish surrender and capitulation.
Looking back at history, it is quite ironic that this argument
intensified during the recent Jewish Holiday of Hanukah. Just as the
Jews were not broken by the mighty Assyrian Empire and held fast to
their Torah beliefs, so too shall we never abandon our Torah truth.
Just as we outlived the Greek, the Roman and the Russian empires that
outlawed the public teaching and practice of Judaism; so too shall we
overcome the evil decree from a viciously anti-Israel State
Department. The destiny of the Jewish people lies only in the hand of
G-d. Faith in G-d and Jewish power is the Kahane message that they
call terrorism.
Am Yisrael Chai - The People of Israel shall live eternally.
Od Kahane Chai - Kahane's ideas shall live on!
Yekutiel (Michael) Guzofsky, the writer of this opinion piece is the
Director of Kahane.org, the Kahane movement. He was the Chief of
Operations for Rabbi Meir Kahane in Israel before Rabbi Kahane's
assassination on Nov. 5, 1990 and Chief of Operations for Binyamin Zev
Kahane in the U.S. before his assassination on Dec. 30, 2000.

Pledges to remain a virgin appear to delay sex. A government
study published in the American Journal of Sociology (see link #1
below) found that the public pledges teen-agers make seem to work, at
least for awhile. Adolescents who took the pledge delayed having sex
one-third longer -- an average of 18 months - than their peers. The
pledge was more effective among 16- and 17-year-olds than
18-year-olds. ...About 2.5 million teen-agers made the pledges in the
1990s, according to the report, The National Longitudinal Study of
Adolescent Health (see link #2 below). The "virginity pledge" movement
began among Christian ministries such as True Love Waits and now
includes about 80 independent organizations. The pledgers are not just
the "far-right religious kids," study co-author Peter Bearman of
Columbia University said, according to news reports. "These are the
kids you see at the mall." ...But whether the goal of the pledge -
abstinence until marriage - has been met is uncertain. "We are still
talking about delaying the onset of intercourse," not waiting until
marriage, Jacqueline Darroch of the Alan Guttmacher Institute said.
Researchers said they did not know how many teens who took the pledge
actually refrained from sex until marriage. ...Jimmy Hester, an
official with True Love Waits, told Religion Today that the report
shows that the pledges make a significant difference in the lives of
teen-agers even though not all teens follow through. The ministry is
sponsoring a pledge sign-up over the Internet (see link #3 below) on
Valentine's Day, Feb. 14. ...Some teen-agers appear to be confused
about what abstinence is. Researchers, public health experts, and
health care workers have found that many young people believed that
oral sex was abstinent behavior, according to The New York Times. Dr.
Freya Sonenstein of the Urban Institute found in a national survey
that 44 percent of boys as young as 15 had some sexual experience,
according to Focus on the Family (see link #4 below). "We think that
parents may be quite surprised and concerned," she said.
Abortion clinics are conducting price wars. With fewer abortions
being done, the procedures increasingly have clustered in
specialty clinics in urban areas, where there are more customers, and
price wars and competition over amenities have resulted, according to
The New York Times (see link #5 below). ...A clinic in Detroit created
a spa-like atmosphere at its offices, with low light, candles, and
relaxing music, the newspaper reported. Fees for an abortion are lower
at some clinics than they were 25 years ago, sometimes dropping below
$200. The number of abortions has declined by 17.4 percent in seven
years while the number of clinics in major cities has not changed, the
Times reported. ...Abortion clinics also have new competition since
mifepristone, the abortion pill formerly known as RU-486, has been
approved for use in the United States. Still, performing abortions
remains lucrative for doctors, who can make several hundred thousand
dollars a year doing a few a day part time, the newspaper reported.
Arlen Specter is voicing concerns about persecuted Christians
during his trip to India. Specter, a Republican senator from
Pennsylvania, is visiting with government leaders this week, The
Times of India reported.
...Christians in some states have been attacked, beaten, killed,
and had their homes and churches burned by radical Hindus,
according to news reports. Christians comprise about 2 percent of the
population in the mostly Hindu country. Some Hindu religious leaders
reportedly have encouraged the government to expel Christians because
of their evangelistic activities. ...Specter said he will raise the
issue of persecution with India's External Affairs minister, Jaswant
Singh. Specter is a human rights advocate, according to the news
service.
Hispanics continue to drift away from their traditional
allegiance to the Catholic Church. The number of Hispanic adults
who say they attend a Catholic church more frequently than any
other has dropped 15 percent in the last decade to 53 percent,
according to the Barna Research Group (see link #6 below). It
conducted a telephone survey of 4,038 adults. Hispanics are the
fastest-growing ethnic group in the country and are expected to
overtake blacks to become the second-largest population group in
the next five years, Barna reported.
...More Hispanics are attending Protestant churches, tending to
favor charismatic and Pentecostal churches at a slightly higher
rate than evangelical ones. Baptist and mainline Protestant
churches each attract about 1 percent of Hispanics.
...The spiritual practices of Hispanic adults are nearly
identical to those of non-Hispanics, the survey showed. During a
typical week Hispanics are just as likely to attend church (40
percent), volunteer at their church (24 percent), pray (81
percent), and attend a Sunday school class (15 percent) as
non-Hispanic adults. They are slightly less likely to read the
Bible during the week.
... Almost nine out of ten Hispanics (87 percent) consider
themselves Christian. More than four out of five assert that
their religious faith is very important in their life, but only
one out of four Hispanic adults (26 percent) also claims to be
"absolutely committed" to the Christian faith. That is
substantially below the level of "absolute commitment" reported
among non-Hispanics (44 percent). Hispanic adults are also much
less likely to consider themselves born-again. Only 25 percent
considered themselves to be born-again, compared with 44 percent
among non-Hispanic adults.
Ushers should be trained and ready to stop violence in church,
says a former pastor who runs a security organization. Jeff
Hanna, executive director of the GuideOne Center for Risk
Management (see link #7 below) in Des Moines, Iowa, told Religion
Today that churches should put together a "safety team" led by trained
ushers. ..."A lot of churches are doing security piecemeal" but they
need an overall plan for everything that happens in the church, said
Hanna, a criminal justice graduate, former security official, and a
United Methodist pastor for 14 years. Churches need security without
scaring worshipers, he said. "They want to do the right thing without
being obtrusive." Hanna's company runs seminars to train church
personnel in security issues, and he has written a book on the
subject. The group insures 45,000 churches nationwide. ...Recent
bloodshed in a church in the Caribbean island of St. Lucia and an
attempted attack by a mentally ill man against the archbishop of New
York in St. Patrick's Cathedral have underlined the need for churches
to be safe, Hanna said. ...Those incidents are an anomaly, he said.
Violence in churches is not necessarily increasing rapidly, but the
recent incidents do "raise the whole issue of security," including
whether a church has a plan to get its children out of the building in
case of fire.

Subject: REPORTS/NWSLTR: ALNOR REPORT
BENNY HINN -- FALSE PROPHET EXTRORDINAIRE
By Jackie Alnor
TV mega-preacher, Benny Hinn, used a false prophecy to extort millions of
dollars from unsuspecting victims. He warned TBN's TV audience that 1999
was going to be a year of plenty and the year 2000 would bring disaster.
He threatened the viewers that those who didn't double their giving in 1999
would not survive the year 2000. Even the donors who had already called in
their pledges were ordered to call back and increase their giving or face the
consequences. This certifies Benny Hinn as a false prophet.
This isn't the first time Hinn has prophesied falsely. Back in 1989 he
prophesied to his congregation at the Orlando Christian Center in Florida what
he was seeing for the decade of the 1990s.
? "The Lord also tells me to tell you in mid 90's -- about '94 or '95, no later than
that -- God will destroy the homosexual community of America . . . He will
destroy it with fire." ? "The Spirit of God tells me -- an earthquake will hit the
east coast of America and destroy much in the 90's." ? "The Spirit tells me --
Fidel Castro will die in the 90's. . . Holy Spirit just said to me, it'll be worse than
any death you can imagine."
After 20 minutes of prophesying to his congregation that night, Hinn
appeared to be "drunk in the spirit." When he came to his senses he said, "I'd
like to know what I said. I was totally gone."
Yet no matter how many times Hinn's false prophecies have been exposed, he
still performs to overflowing crowds in stadiums around the world.
Hinn shares his latest blunder with 700-Club founder, Pat Robertson, though
Robertson could not be reached to verify his involvement.
It was the spring, 1999 Praise-a-Thon, Trinity Broadcasting Network's (TBN),
biannual fund-raiser, seen around the world via satellite. From the discussion
between Paul & Jan Crouch and their guests, pledges were down because
people were apprehensive anticipating potential troubles arising from Y2K
hysteria. 'Prophet' Hinn exhorted TBN's supporters to not let Y2K fears affect
their donations.
Hinn started out by establishing his credentials as a prophet of God. He called
upon TBN's fellow guests for help in interpreting a disturbing dream he had
had. "I do not fully understand it," he lamented, "but I really believe it deals
with what God is about to do in the world."
He gave a long narrative of his mystical dream that he said was "more of a
vision of the night" than a dream. "In this dream, I did not see his face," Hinn
began. "Everything in me knew it was the prophet Elijah . . . I walked up to him
and he was turning water into blood." Hinn continued, "As I came to him, he
said to me, 'Take this!' I took the rod from him.".
When he finished, fellow guest Mark Chirona, offered the interpretation. "The
formless essence of Elijah is the spirit of Elijah that God promised to pour out
on the last days' company of seasoned ministry that will literally fulfill
everything that God promised under the old covenant that would come into
the new covenant of a prophetic order that would change the couse of
history."
Hinn responded. "I feel the anointing here while he is talking!" " Chirona
continued, "And when Elijah handed you the rod, God was putting in your
hand a new level of apostolic authority for the nations. . . You are entering into
a new age of the miraculous. There will be a sharpening, for the spirit of Elijah
rests on you."
Hinn laid out his first prophetic message under Elijah's mantle. "Pat Robertson,
in January, said 'I have just come out of two days of prayer and fasting. The
Lord has said to me that this year, 1999, would be the greatest year for the
body of Christ, economically and spiritually, but beginning the year 2000,
disasters would hit in the world, economically and otherwise, and only those
in the church who have been giving to God would be spared.'"
Turning his attention to the viewers, Hinn said, "So when I say to you here
and in your home, increase your seed, God knows you can and you must
because if you do not, you will be the one to suffer."
TBN supporters then jammed the phones in order to survive the coming year
of disaster. Hinn gave dire warnings to those who pledge and then fail to
follow through. "And one final thing, if you break your promise, hear this!
Some of you make a pledge and along the way you decide to forget about it.
The Bible says God will destroy the work of your hands if you do that . . . We
can't play games with him!"
" Now, some of you will have to step out in faith tonight," Hinn said. "You
may not even have the money right now. In fact, most times you make a
pledge you don't even have it."
Then he followed up with a warning to the skeptics. "You know, you do not
get under the kind of anointing I get under just because you sing hallelujah,"
Hinn said.. ''There's a heavy price and I would not want to be in the shoes of
the one who touches the anointing. Don't touch the anointing!"
"I'm giving you a prophetic word. You know the scripture says they
prospered because they obeyed his prophets. I'm telling you tonight, I'm
speaking prophetically. Obey the Lord!"
Hinn had a solution for those who were short on cash, -- liquidate! ""You
know if I was you and God spoke to me like this, I'd take it out of my
investments to give it to God now cause it's already spring and the year 2000
is almost next door."
So now that the year 2000 has come and gone with no casualties to count, will
TBN refund the extorted funds? Don't count on it!

Rare Temple Mount lintel neglected by Antiquities Authority
By Arieh O'Sullivan
JERUSALEM (January 5) - A carved marble lintel dug out of the Temple
Mount rubbish last year and identified as part of a gate to the Temple itself
has been tossed carelessly in the back yard of the Antiquities Authority.
Archeologist Zachi Zweig claimed the Antiquities Authority knows of its
importance, but that the archaeologist charged with reviewing the reclaimed
artifact is dragging his feet over releasing a report.
"This stone is the most important artifact ever recovered from the Temple
Mount. It is part of a stately gate and it very well could have been from one of
the entrances into the Temple itself or to another sanctuary," Zweig told The
Jerusalem Post.
According to Zweig, who is affiliated with the apolitical Committee for the
Prevention of Destruction of Antiquities on the Temple Mount, the stone is
the first archaeological evidence of monumental architecture in the Temple
Mount that can be positively dated to the Second Temple period.
The stone is about 75 cm. long and 50 cm. wide and has been resting in the
back yard of the Antiquities Authority headquarters in Jerusalem's
Rockefeller Museum for the past eight months.
Zweig blasted the Antiquities Authority yesterday for taking so long to
publish a report of the stone so that it may be used by scholars and
students when referring to the ancient Jewish temple. Without its authentic
publication, they will have to rely on hearsay.
Zweig said that there was no valid reason for the delay in publication of a
report, since it did not involve extensive identification, as is common with an
artifact found on site.
The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE during the great
Jewish revolt.
The Antiquities Authority recovered the stone, along with a number of other
artifacts, last January after the Wakf dug under the Temple Mount to create a
new entrance to an underground mosque. The debris was dumped in the
nearby Kidron Valley.
Since no official archaeological dig has ever taken place at the Temple
Mount, these few items are the only remnants positively known to have come
from there.
Prof. Ronnie Reich, a former Jerusalem district chief archaeologist, has
compared the lintel's style to a similar style from the Second Temple era,
found in the Triple Gate at the southern wall of the Temple Mount by the late
Prof. B. Mazar, Zweig said.
Antiquities Authority Spokeswoman Osnat Gaoz said in reaction that the
preliminary report of the find would be published "soon" in Hadashot
Archaeology (Archaeology News).
Gaoz said that a final report would be published in Atiqot at the end of the
research, according to procedures of the Antiquities Authority. This would
take an extended period of time, she said, since the research is still going
on.
Gaoz dismissed calls for the artifacts from the Temple Mount to be given
priority over other finds in and that it had to come in its own turn.
"With all due respect, these finds are important, but I can't say it is of
primary importance. This dig is like all other digs... [it is] more important
than any other," Gaoz said.
Archaeologists have said that the finds had lost much of their archaeological
value, since they were not found in situ but after they had been removed,
sifted, and dumped. Their only true value is their origin inside the Temple
Mount.
Gaoz said the Antiquities Authority never hid the fact that the marble stone
was found and actually announced back in February that it appears to be
from the Second Temple period. But, she said, even if it was, no one could
say where it actually stood or what it was used for. (End of Article)

Interview: Zo-Artzenu leader Moshe Feiglin
Aaron Lerner Date: 4 January 2001
IMRA interviewed Zo-Artzenu leader Moshe Feiglin in English on 3
January 2001:
IMRA: I see that you are organizing an activity to slow down, if not
stop traffic completely, at a specific time and place and I am
wondering if by making this announcement, considering the current
circumstances, you are not introducing the possibility that
Palestinian terrorists might take advantage of this situation. You
are going to create a logjam in the middle of the country and God
forbid, someone knowing that there is going to be a specific
situation at specific locations might want to take advantage of the
situation.
Feiglin: Well, no one will know about the locations.
IMRA: They know when it is going to be.
Feiglin: That is true. The truth is that I am afraid of something
else. I am trying to make sure people understand not to stop
suddenly so that there will not be any accidents. But taking into
consideration what you just said now sounds completely - forgive me
for saying this - crazy. Because if you are saying we should not
demonstrate because we are afraid of terrorists then. . .
IMNRA: Excuse me. I think that there is a confusion here. There is
a very large demonstration on behalf of Jerusalem next week that does
not include the blocking of traffic. As far as I know it is possible
to have all kinds of demonstrations without blocking traffic.
Feiglin: If we were living in a democracy or something near it then
maybe regular demonstrations and logical protests would have an
impact. But here we are dealing with a prime minister who has
already resigned who has 30 MK's with him and still negotiates about
Jerusalem and still is willing to destroy settlements. This is not a
democracy and we have to show ourselves and the whole world that he
doesn't go through. And you do not achieve that with regular
demonstrations.
IMRA: Before we deal with this philosophical issue I just want to
close up on this practical issue
You are not concerned that someone may take advantage of the
knowledge that at a specific time the roads will be tightly packed,
thereby making a nice target.
Feiglin: I am not saying that I am not concerned but I cannot allow
myself to bring this issue into the facts that I am taking into
consideration.
IMRA: Would it be safe to say that a lot of your supporters are from
the religious community?
Feiglin: Yes.
IMRA: So that the issue of "pikuach nefesh", avoiding life
threatening situations, is an issue or consideration that does come
up. Isn't this a prima facia case of contributing to a situation
that could definitely have a problem of pikuach nefesh?
Feiglin: I think that that is a very wrong way to look at it. For
example, Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef always said that he is willing to give
up parts of the Land of Israel because of pikuach nefesh and when you
take this pikuach nefesh idea you can very easily get to the point
that you say that it is pikuach nefesh to even live in the country so
let=92s live in New Jersey.
What we are dealing with today is a disastrous government which since
Oslo started has been talking about pikuach nefesh and lives and
peace and security. And from the day we started this Oslo process
more civilians got killed then all the time since the creation of
Israel.
So do me a favor, we cannot bring this into consideration. We are
talking about a real disaster and you are talking to me about the
possibility of a little danger from out of the blue. You cannot
compare the danger we are fighting against to the danger that may be
created by this demonstration. It is like sending a soldier to the
war and worrying about him getting a cold.
IMRA: So you are saying that you are so certain of the effectiveness
of the action that if I called you the day after the action and God
forbid something did happen you would tell me that it was worth it.
Feiglin: You know that during the big demonstrations of the Yesha
Council people got killed. You have to put things in perspective.
IMRA: I spoke with MK Benny Elon a week ago and he said that the
kind of civil disobedience you are talking about is when you want to
bring down a government but in this case the government has already
resigned and we are going to elections. So we are already beyond the
stage that civil disobedience is relevant.
Feiglin: Well Benny Elon has decided for me what the goal is of the
demonstrations. That it is to bring down the government. The
government will hopefully fall but this is not the goal of the whole
act.
If you would have come last night to our meeting and read our plan
you would see that the political process and the election has no
connection to what we do. What we see right now in front of our face
is a government negotiating about the Temple Mount. Negotiating
about Jerusalem, and you do not see the Jews out in the streets
screaming and yelling. It is not a question of what the political
result will be from what we do. It is a simple question of the
defamation of God and the sanctification of God's name. And it
doesn't matter who will be prime minister after the elections.
Whoever it will be should get today a sign that things like that do
not go through in a Jewish city.
IMRA: And the massive rally being prepared does not send the
message?
Feiglin: I am not saying that it is not relevant. I am very happy
about the massive demonstrations being organized now and I will
participate in them and encourage my people to take a part in them.
But we all know what will happen here after a regular demonstration.
It will get three minutes on the news and then the Four Mothers will
get four minutes and after half a day everybody will forget it. We
have to do something that gets . . .
IMRA: So you will get 8 minutes?
Feiglin: No. I will not get 8 minutes because I am not going
through the media at all. Hopefully everybody in the country will
feel it themselves.
IMRA: So let me ask you this. You said before that hopefully the
elections will be the end of the Barak government so my understanding
is that you see an interest in Sharon winning instead of Barak. That
you would prefer Sharon over Barak.
Feiglin: Yes.
IMRA: We have seen already that one of the campaign themes that the
Barak team is using is public fear of what might be termed the
radical elements of the Right. I am not saying if it is right or
wrong. Just that it is one of their campaign themes. That they see
the potential to exploit the fear of the radical right for the
benefit of their candidate Barak.
Don't you see the possibility that your activities will be exploited
by the Barak campaign and ultimately, under certain circumstances,
lead to Barak's re-election.
Feiglin: There are two sides to this coin. The practical part and
the principle part. In the practical part everyone agrees today that
what Artzenu did in 1995 helped Netanyahu get elected and not the
other way around. Everybody is saying that and everyone understands
that because people were saying that this action demonstrated to the
public that the nation was not with Rabin at the time. So on a
practical side I do not think that it is true. And on the principle
side again, if we will get to all kinds of manipulations with one
saying that it is his way to see it and another saying the opposite
and we have all kinds of calculations to sit home and not bring our
feelings out on the streets in a democratic nonviolent way then we
are falling straight where the Left wants us to fall. As a bunch of
sheep going in their direction and we know what that means in terms
of the Oslo process: to slaughter. So I do not agree to that
assertion from a practical point of view and more so from a moral
view.

SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS
In evening news, VOP quoted Yasser Arafat saying upon his return from
Egypt-when questioned whether he had any hopes for an agreement before
Clinton's presidency ended-that he indeed hoped for such an agreement and
that President Clinton had promised to work for an agreement.
But VOP put is headline spotlight on the remarks of Egyptian Foreign
Minister Amr Musa-in effect saying that his interpretation of events was the
official and sanctioned one-that the Arab world would not abide any
non-Palestinian sovereignty in Jerusalem, particularly the Haram al-Sharif
(the Temple Mount, including the Western Wall or Burak Wall) and other
legitimate Palestinian rights, especially the right of return for
Palestinian refugees.
In addition, Arafat's own top aides and ministers continue to flood VOP
with interviews suggesting that such an agreement is very doubtful.
Arafat's cabinet secretary Ahmad Abdul-Rahman said tonight that Arafat
had made it clear he would not accept any Israeli sovereignty in the Haram
Sharif area or elsewhere in Jerusalem (presumably including the new
neighborhoods built in what was Jordanian-controlled territory).
VOP also focused on MK Hashem Mahmid's call to void the early release of
Jewish prisoner Yoram Shkolnick, convicted of killing a bound Arab terrorist
eight years ago. (Note: Earlier this week, VOP also gave some coverage to
the Israeli Arab town of Taibeh's refusal to host Israeli president Moshe
Katsav.)
VOP also covered the coming US-Israeli-Turkish sea maneuvers, noting Arab
objections to the war exercises.
THURSDAY EVENING HEADLINES 6pm/7pm 9PM/ (combined):
*--"His Excellency President Yasser Arafat meets with Egyptian leaders and
states that what Egyptian leaders say reflects the decision of the Arab
summit and the Palestinian Leadership regarding American ideas;
*--Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Musa says Arab League authorizes
Palestinian Authority to demand sovereignty over all Jerusalem ((note: in
one broadcast it said "complete sovereignty over the holy shrine")) and the
right of return for the refugees;
*--Occupation Forces exrtend their aggression to a variety of sites in the
homeland;
*--Three citizens injured in artillery shelling near Salahadin crossing
in Rafah;
*--Heavy artillery shelling on citizens' houses in Beit Lakiya, Dir
al-Balah and Tulkarm."
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"When his excellency President Arafat was asked about his readiness to to
achieve a Palestinian-Israeli agreement in coming days, he said 'we hope
so, and President Clinton promised to do everything possible to reach an
agreement before his term of office expires." (VOP evening report on Arafat
response to question on whether he hopes agreement will be achieved soon)
MIDNIGHT HEADLINES JAN4/5
*--"President Yasser Arafat states that what the Egyptian Foreign
Minister explained concerning the Arab summit reflects the summits views as
well as his (Arafat's) concerning the American ideas.including clinging to
sovereignty over the Jerusalem Shrine and the right o return for the
refugees;

SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS
One has to pay attention to the unusual first item of the morning
news-which was also the first item last night: unusual both in tone, style
and content.
The reliance of Yasser Arafat on the Egyptian interpretation of the Arab
summit and the state of talks with the United States/Israel ((see also
Thursday night update) shows clearly that Egypt and the Palestinian
Authority are closely coordinating their positions (and not Egypt working as
an independent facilitator between Israel and the PA, as some have
believed).
It indicates, too, that while the Egyptians may be maintaining a
continued hard line on the Jerusalem and the refugee issues, they are also
coaching Arafat to signal some kind of flexibility and willingness to
continue towards agreement: his positive response to a question about hope
for achieving an agreement. In other words, be tough substantively while
appearing moderate for media consumption.
At the beginning of its Friday morning news( comments by narrator at 7:04),
VOP gave unusually favorable coverage to Ariel Sharon's courting of the
Israeli Arab sector, particularly his remarks that he "respected the
Palestinian struggle." Although this was not repeated in subsequent
broadcasts, it marks a sea change from the treatment Sharon used to receive
at the hands of VOP-i.e. "the extremist Ariel Sharon" or "the leader of the
extremist Right."
The use of martial music or strongly militant patriotic songs has
returned to VOP after the end of the Festival of the Feast ending Ramadan,
and the harsh anti-Israeli tone is seen in occasional use of the terms
"zionist enemy" "the enemy" and "the Jews" on regular VOP broadcasts,
including a Friday morning call-in show with quiz questions for children
(Friday, 11:00-11:40 a.m.).
Friday MORNING HEADLINES--7 am/ 8am:
*--"His Excellency President Yasser Arafat says that what was recently
expressed by Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Musa reflects the opinion of the
Arab summit and the Palestinian leadership regarding the American thoughts
and opinions (i.e. the American initiative);
*--Musa says that Palestinian interlocutor (i.e. the Palestinian side or
Palestinian Authority) alone has the power of decision according to
international legitimacy;
*--Gilead Sher, Barak's bureau chief, estimates that the chances for
achieving an agreement in the twilight of the presidency of President
Clinton are slim;
*--The military court in Beirut handed down 48 sentences on Lebanese
accused of cooperating with Israel;
*--President Clinton sends Congress his decision to continue sanctions
against Libya begun in 1986;
*--American investigators will arrive tomorrow Saturday in Yemen to
participate in interrogation (examination) of the attack on the American
destroyer Cole this Tishreen al-Awal (Islamic month: September ) resulting
in the deaths of 17 American sailors."
NINE AM HEADINES
*--"His Excellency President Yasser Arafat says he hopes that an
agreement will be achieved by the end of the Clinton Presidency;
((rest of 9 am headlines-including Musa-related items-were essnetially
duplication of 7 am and 8 am news programs));
*--Resigning Prime Minister Ehud Barak reiterated Israel's complete
refusal of the right of return of refugees to it (Israel) and repeated
earlier threats that if no agreement is achieved that he would implement
unilateral separation on the land."

MODERATE PALESTINIANS
An advertisement published in the Israeli Arab newspaper, "Panorama" (24
December 2000), threatened hanging for any Israeli Arabs that cast a vote in
the coming elections for prime minister. The newspaper, published in
Nazareth, is generally regarded as a moderate voice in the Israel Arab
sector.

NEW ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACKS IN EUROPE
Assailants threw two firebombs at a synagogue in the Belarus capital of
Minsk on December 29, but an alert security guard put out the flames. The
rabbi of the synagogue, Rabbi Sender Uritzky, is the Aish HaTorah
representative in Minsk.
Anti-Semitism is on the rise in Belarus and Russia, with bomb and arson
attacks on synagogues, desecration of Jewish cemeteries, anti-Semitic
publications and hate rhetoric by some politicians.
Meanwhile in Bucharest, Romania, two men who said they were looking for
soap made of human fat, smashed windows and hurled objects at the Jewish
History museum, punching and attempting to strangle a guard.

ARABS PROTEST IMPORT OF ISRAELI GOODS
Protesters gathered outside the flagship Marks and Spencer's store in
London, accusing the store of supporting Israeli killings of children in the
occupied territories. Massoud Shadjareh, chairman of Islamic Human Rights
Commission, said: "We believe they are supporting a system that justifies
killing children and that this is morally wrong."
He said that the store bought $233 million of goods from Israel annually.
"That is significant support and it is really British consumers who are paying
for that support," he said.
Jane Lowe, a Marks and Spencer spokeswoman, said: "We are not
supporting any country. We do not support Israel. We just support good
clothes." She said the company bought $750 million worth of clothes from
the Middle East every year; its Israeli trade was only a fraction of that total.

STARK JUXTAPOSITION
This week, many media outlets reported in the same article the murders of
Binyamin Ze'ev Kahana and wife, Talia, and the killing several hours later of a
Palestinian terrorist leader, Thabet Thabet, presumably by Israeli security
forces.
By viewing these two incidents in such close juxtaposition, one gets a
dramatic sense of media bias against Israel.
Here's how CNN reported it:
"Israeli forces were on high alert Monday following the Sunday deaths of a
radical Jewish settler activist and Thabet Thabet, a senior official of Arafat's
Fatah political movement."
http://www.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/meast/01/01/mideast.05/index.html
According to CNN, the Jew is radical settler, while the Palestinian is a senior
political official.
In truth, the IDF identified Thabet as the secretary general of the Tanzim in
the Tul Karm area. Tanzim is the militarized Palestinian group responsible for
much of the recent attacks against Jews. The IDF said that Thabet
personally ordered the attack last month near Shevei Shomron in which two
Israeli civilians and two soldiers were wounded, one seriously. Thabet was
also responsible for numerous other shooting attacks by Fatah activists in
the area, and was involved in planning bombing attacks.
Further, what was the Palestinian motive for killing Kahane? Simply because
he was a Jewish civilian traveling on the road. Yet the media lumps the two
events together, effectively equating the ambush of an innocent Jewish
civilian with the targeted strike against a Palestinian terrorist!
Now let's look at this week's events as reported in The Washington Times,
under the headline: "Ambush kills Israeli radical Kahane."
"Binyamin Kahane -- the son of the late ultranationalist Rabbi Meir Kahane --
was gunned down along with his wife, Talia, and children by a Palestinian in
the West Bank. The attack, coupled with the killing hours later of a top
Palestinian activist by Israeli soldiers, drew calls for vengeance on both
sides. Thabet Thabet, a senior activist in Mr. Arafat's Fatah faction, was
gunned down yesterday outside his home in the West Bank town of
Tulkarem." http://www.washtimes.com/world/default- 200111225143.htm
According to this report, the Jew is radical ultranationalist, while the
Palestinian is a senior activist.
The Washington Times humanizes Thabet by mentioning he was killed
"outside his home." CBS News goes one step further, humanizing Thabet as
a "49-year-old dentist."
HonestReporting encourages activists to monitor and respond to these
attempts to equate Israel's right of defense with Palestinian aggression.
Action recommended: Question the "kid gloves" treatment given to terrorist
Thabet Thabet and to the violent Tanzim organization.

LONELY IN BETHLEHEM
"Israel Update" reader Arlene Kushner wrote the follwing complaint to Phil
Bennett, Foreign Editor of The Washington Post
<bennettp@washpost.com>:
In your article on Christmas in Bethlehem, the picture painted is of very
militaristic Israelis ("sandbag bunkers... concrete barriers... M-16 rifles"),
while the only allusion to Palestinian violence is the fact that some hurled
stones were still on the ground. No mention of Palestinians who have been
hurling Molotov cocktails, or shooting rifles. A serious imbalance.
The quote from the Italian nun, is both strange and offensive: "Just a little
child, Jesus, and all of this." Were the Israelis aiming rifles at little Jesus,
perchance? One might almost think so. There is a tone about this that pits
Israelis against Christianity. And it's wrong, wrong, wrong.
This is followed by a gratuitous quote from a Palestinian tourist official about
how maybe the Israelis wouldn't have let Joseph and Mary into Bethlehem.
Again the implication that Israelis would interfer with Christianity. I am
especially offended by this because in the years since Israel has been in
control of the old city of Jerusalem -- with its Christian sites such as Church
of the Holy Sepulchre -- and until recently of Bethlehem, there has been an
enormous respect shown for Christian practices and a careful guarding of
Christian religious rights.
Further, the Post writes: "Beit Jala, a Bethlehem suburb, has been the target
of heavy fire from Israeli tanks and helicopter gunships to quiet what Israel
says are regular sniping attacks on a Jewish settlement."
What Israel "says"?? I refuse to believe that your correspondent doesn't
KNOW that serious sniping has been going on for almost three months now
from Beit Jala into the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo.
When you reported shelling of Beit Jala, you didn't qualify with "Palestinians
say." You cited it as fact. The fact that indeed the Palestinians have been
sniping at Gilo for almost three months, and it is common knowledge and
easily documented that Israel's shelling of Beit Jala is only a reluctant
response to the original Palestinian shelling. I believe your reporting reflects
a serious lack of journalistic objectivity.
Neither does the labeling of Gilo as a "settlement" -- while in fact it is very
much a part of Jerusalem -- qualify as objective reporting.
----
Phil Bennett of The Washington Post replies:
There is a point you make that I agree with. Even though it is my
understanding that Gilo was built on land annexed after the '67 war and
included in Jerusalem's boundaries in a decision that has not been
recognized internationally, it is misleading in a strict sense to call it a
settlement. We have changed this several times but it slipped through in this
piece, probably because Gilo was not named. We'll avoid this in the future.

Settlers' mass marches gathering momentum
By Nadav Shragai
Ha'aretz Correspondent
A wave of mass protests by the political right against the Barak government's
peace policy is swelling. It is planned to climax on Monday in a huge
demonstration and march around the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem.
The settlements of Beit El, Elon Moreh, Kedumim and Yitzhar closed their
schools and workplaces yesterday. Beit El residents also set up an outpost
on the Jerusalem-Ramallah road, declaring they would not move until the
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) again manned the site, which it recently
abandoned.
At the outpost near Ofra, established on Monday, Ofra residents
strengthened their hold, declaring they will not leave the site at all.
Yesterday afternoon, members of Ofra, Beit El, and other settlements
marched along an additional section of the road to Jerusalem as part of the
"Israel-is-fighting-for-its-soul" campaign. They reached Pisgat Ze'ev, where
they held a protest gathering with residents of the Jerusalem neighborhood.
Kedumim and Elon Moreh residents blocked roads to Palestinian villages in
the early morning, claiming they were enforcing IDF orders not to let
Palestinian vehicles onto the road. They then marched to Itamar on the road
where vehicles are shot-at every day.
In the afternoon, they held a protest gathering where Eldad Halahmi, the
secretary of Elon Moreh, read from Ze'ev Jabotinsky's "Enough Restraint,"
written after the bloody attacks by Arabs against Jews early in the century.
Later in the day, they massed for a joint demonstration near Barak's
Jerusalem residence. MK Gideon Ezra (Likud) urged the Kedumin and Elon
Moreh marchers to vote for MK Ariel Sharon (Likud) for prime minister in
upcoming elections.
Rabbi David Dudkevitz of Yitzhar said he was concerned because Sharon
had only committed himself to holding onto Jerusalem and the Jordan Valley,
and has yet to publicly commit himself not to evacuate settlements.
Avraham Hertzlich, father of Talya Kahane, who was shot-dead Sunday near
Ofra with her husband, Binyamin, said that as a shepherd he got along well
with animals, but "with human animals like the Palestinian terrorists there is
no way of getting along."
Hertzlich is currently observing the traditional shiva period of mourning in a
tent near the prime minister's residence.
Haggi Ben-Artzi, brother-in-law of ex-prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
denounced the government as traitorous at the gathering, noting that on last
Jerusalem Day, Barak swore never to bretray Jerusalem. The Council of
Jewish Communities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza (Yesha Council) hurried to
publish a condemnation of Ben-Artzi's remarks.
Residents of Nof Ayalon and Sha'albim also demonstrated yesterday at the
Latrun Interchange against Barak and the deterioration of Israel's security in
the months since the Al Aqsa Intifada began in late September. Similar
protests were held at the Tsemah junction in the Galilee, in the Ra'anana
area and elsewhere throughout the country.
Netanyahu visited hunger-strikers in their tent in Jerusalem's Safra Square
yesterday on their fifth day without food to protest against Clinton's proposal.
He told them the Oslo process was dead and that everything offered to the
Palestinians at Camp David and afterwards was null-and-void and would not
bind the Likud government after the February 6 prime ministerial elections.
Netanyahu, who was received with cheers, said Barak was completely cut-off
from reality, and that his concessions to PA Chairman Yasser Arafat
undermine the very future of the State of Israel. He said that only after an
extended period without fighting or terrorist attacks would it be possible to re-
examine positions towards the Palestinians, but that such a re-examination
occur on clean slate, without no previous commitments.
Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert also visited the hunger strikers. He said that
the struggle against the re-division of Jerusalem and the transfer of the
Temple Mount to PA sovereignty would reach a high point on Monday with a
mass demonstration opposite the walls of the Old City.

Subject: [bprlist] U.S. now seeking a limited accord before Clinton goes

U.S. now seeking a limited accord before Clinton goes
Ha'aretz Correspondents and Reuters
By Aluf Benn and Nitzan Horowitz
The outgoing Clinton administration is expected to focus its immediate
efforts on formulating an understanding between the Israelis and
Palestinians, which would fall short of a detailed framework agreement.
According to senior Israeli diplomatic sources, the Americans will try to
reach a less binding type of agreement, along the lines of a declaration of
principles, a Presidential Declaration, or an agenda and a timetable for the
negotiations on which both sides can agree.
During his meeting with U.S. President Bill Clinton in Washington on
Tuesday, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat suggested that
marathon negotiations be held in the U.S., starting next Monday. However,
Prime Minister Ehud Barak rejected the idea and instead sent Gilad Sher,
leading negotiator with the Palestinians, to Washington, to learn more about
the meeting between Clinton and Arafat. Barak is eager to confirm that no
promises have been made to the Palestinians at Israel's expense.
U.S. sources expect that talks between Sher and American officials will
center on Clinton's bridging proposals, despite reports that Barak has
instructed his envoy to limit the talks to the security arrangements and the
issue of continuing violence in the territories.
"I will be very surprised if they do not discuss Clinton's plan," a senior
American official said. "Sher and the negotiating team will examine the
parameters of the American offer, the Israeli and Palestinian reservations,
and they will also focus on finding ways of putting an end to the violence."
Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat is also expected to arrive in
Washington for a series of parallel meetings with American mediators.
Following consultations at the Arab League meeting in Cairo yesterday,
Arafat said that he hoped to reach a final peace accord with Israel before
U.S. President Bill Clinton leaves office on January 20.
"We hope so," Arafat said, when asked by reporters on his return to Gaza
whether a deal was possible in the final days of Clinton's presidency.
But Arafat declined to answer directly a question about his final word on the
last-gasp U.S. peace blueprint.See full report in the Herald TribuneAccording
to reports on Arafat's meeting with Clinton, the Palestinian leader expressed
deep mistrust of Barak's intentions, and requested that Clinton provide
clarifications on a number of points in his bridging proposal. In response, the
U.S. president recommended that negotiations be held between lower level
officials from both sides, for about 12 days, during which the Palestinians will
be able to receive the kinds of clarifications they deem necessary.
According to the American timetable, a "security forum" will be held in Cairo
on Sunday, involving the head of the Central Intelligence Agency, George
Tenet; Palestinian preventive security chief in Gaza, Mohammed Dahlan;
Egypt's head of intelligence services, Omer Suleiman; and Israel's Tourism
Minister and former chief of staff, Amnon Lipkin-Shahak.
During the meeting, the U.S. and Egyptian officials will make efforts to gain
Palestinian agreement to revive Israeli-PA security cooperation.
It is expected that if a drop in the violence in the territories is achieved by
then, the U.S. will invite Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami and senior
Palestinian representatives to Washington for negotiations on formulating
some type of official agreement by both sides.
Both the Prime Minister's bureau and the Foreign Ministry tried to play down
the chances of reaching a final peace treaty. Nonetheless, senior Israeli
sources said that Barak will find it difficult to turn down the American
president, if the Palestinians "provide enough security."
Speaking yesterday during a visit to Germany, Ben-Ami said that "it is
essential to make a superhuman effort to reach an agreement before the end
of Clinton's term, and if this is not possible, it is necessary to seek a general
declaration of principles which is agreeable to both sides, and on which it will
be possible to build a more detailed agreement in the future.

Analysis/Arafat upstages Barak - again
By Aluf Benn
Once again Yasser Arafat gave Ehud Barak a lesson in diplomacy 101.
Barak's declaration on Tuesday that he would halt the negotiations and
concentrate on the war on terror and the cessation of violence was a
wonderful gift for the Palestinian leader, who yesterday hurried to say "yes"
to U.S. President Bill Clinton's peace proposals.
Clinton jumped at the opportunity, and Barak once again became the
naysayer, standing in the way of reaching an agreement, while Arafat was
willing to attend a marathon summit in order to reach a final status
settlement. Who remembers now that Arafat's "yes" is loaded with "noes"
and reservations, or that Israel hurried to answer "yes" to Clinton's proposals,
while the Palestinians delayed their response.
Barak found himself in trouble once again. His campaign team is pressuring
him to take a tough stance on security, after his concessions to the
Palestinians under fire plunged him even lower in the polls, while Ariel
Sharon is being increasingly perceived as "Mr. Security."
The members of the peace cabinet, headed by Yossi Beilin, still believe that
Barak is eager to reach an agreement or a partial paper of some sort with the
Palestinians before the elections. Barak erred, they think, in announcing the
end of the talks too soon, and are urging him to say "yes" to Clinton again
and to send Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami back to Washington for talks
with the Palestinians after a semblance of a decrease in the violence.
Barak, as usual, has again sent out confused signals. Arafat's proposals, he
said, were a "no" masquerading as a "yes," and predicted that,
unfortunately, there was no chance of reaching an agreement, although he
earlier believed that a signed paper with the Palestinians would save him
from the expected defeat at the polls. He is disappointed that the left has not
manned the posts to fight for his reelection.
But it is hard for him to say "no" to Clinton, and he must satisfy the
leadership of the left, who hold his hard-core voters in their hands. Shlomo
Ben-Ami, who two days ago was skeptical, recovered yesterday and called
for "a mutual declaration of principles" as a basis for negotiations after the
elections.
The solution Barak chose was to continue pressure on the Palestinians to do
something in the security area and to dispatch Gilad Sher to Washington to
prepare for a possible renewal of talks. Sher was told to find out exactly what
was said between Clinton and Arafat, and the hints from Jerusalem were that
there were cracks in Barak's confidence in the outgoing president. A 20-
minute debriefing by telephone once a week is not enough, said a "senior
source" this week, adding that Clinton cannot change the world, certainly not
in the Middle East, in the few days he has left of his term.
The prime minister feared that Clinton, eager to leave the White House with
an agreement, accepted some of the Palestinians' reservations and will try to
pay for them by pressuring Israel to make even more concessions.
Barak's security pressure was accepted by the Americans, and was even
used by Clinton as leverage to force Arafat to promise to calm the situation
as much as possible. The sharp drop in shooting incidents since
Wednesday seemed to be the fulfillment of that promise, but then again,
may just reflect the rain that fell that day in the territories.
If there is no large-scale terror attack over the weekend, and the security-
coordinating meeting on Sunday will culminate in the usual empty
declarations on a reduction in the violence, Barak may give in and send Ben-
Ami for another round of talks in Washington "to close the gaps." The
question is whether the foreign minister will try to play for time, or if he will be
pressured to make greater concessions, such as more generous exchanges
of territory or a stronger declaration on the right of return.

Ha'aretz: Ze'evi: IDF stocks ill-prepared for war
By Gideon Alon Ha'aretz Knesset Correspondent Ha'aretz 5 January 2001
MK Rehavam Ze'evi (National Union-Yisrael Beiteinu) told Ha'aretz yesterday
that to the best of his knowledge, the Israel Defense Forces is not ready
for an all-out war from the point of view of equipment or training. The
army's emergency stores he said, are sorely lacking in supplies, and include
vehicles, stored since World War II, whose motors won't even turn over.
Ze'evi, a former major general in the IDF, said that all the problems in the
field of equipment and training stemmed from cuts in the defense budget and
blamed both left- and right-wing governments for the current situation.
The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the 14th Knesset unanimously
called for the allocation of an additional NIS 5 billion to the IDF budget
to solve these problems, Ze'evi said, but instead, some NIS 1 billion was
cut from the budget.
Even if the government were to decide tomorrow to place all the required
resources at the disposal of the IDF, Ze'evi continued, the military would
not be able to fill the gaps in the event of a war in the near future
because replenishing the emergency stores involves production that would
take up to two years.
"The foolishness is that all the governments claimed that we are moving
toward peace and therefore cuts in the defense budget are possible. And now,
if a war were to break out, they will discover the shortcomings about which
I would rather not say too much so as not to cause any damage.

Interview: Labor MK Colette Avital clarifies position on foreign Jewish
activity
Aaron Lerner Date: 5 January 2001
IMRA interviewed Labor MK Colette Avital, in Hebrew, on 5 January
2001:
IMRA: I understand you have come out with a call to Jews overseas not
to interfere with the political process in Israel.
Avital: Completely correct.
IMRA: Is this also basically a call for people not to contribute to
Peace Now?
Avital: I am not calling for people to give or not give money. I
said that when there is a political demonstration I do not think that
the leadership that represents the Jews of the United States of
America should participate in a demonstration that is basically
against the prime minister.
We all live in a certain reality. We know that up to ten thousand or
ten million shekel people can receive contributions for parties.
So I certainly cannot come and tell people not to give what they want
to.
So if people want to continue to contribute to Peace Now just as
others continue to contribute to the settlements, I cannot intervene.
But I think that when there is an election campaign then the senior
leadership of the Jewish community, that is supposed to represent the
positions of the Government of Israel towards the American
leadership, cannot come to protest against the government.

SADDAM'S ALIVE & WELL, SAYS IRAQ=20
The Iraqi government today moved to dispel rumours that Saddam Hussein=20
was on his death bed after suffering a stroke. A video released by the=20
country this morning shows Mr Hussein in good health as he chairs a=20
cabinet meeting, which supposedly took place on New Year's Eve.=20
Rumours of Mr Hussein's death have been circulating since a state=20
broadcast of a military parade earlier that day had ended prematurely and=20
without explanation. However, several journalists at the event said they ha=
d=20
not seen anything untoward. (The London Telegraph)=0E=20
SADDAM SHRUGS OFF ARAB REBUKE=20
Iraq condemned yesterday as =93silly and boring=94 an appeal by other Gulf=
=20
Arab states that Baghdad comply with United Nations resolutions=20
demanding the elimination of its weapons of mass destruction. The=20
communiqu=E9, issued by the Gulf Co-operation Council, was softer in tone=20
than other statements in the past decade, representing a compromise=20
between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, which had wanted to maintain the UN=20
sanctions until Iraq obeyed all resolutions, and the United Arab Emirates=20
and Qatar, which called for their end.=20
The call by the GCC coincided with the biggest military parade in Baghdad=20
since the 1991 Gulf War. The 4-hour demonstration of military muscle,=20
called the al-Aqsa Parade, was intended as a show of support for the=20
Palestinians in their uprising against Israeli occupation and capped a mont=
h-
long training campaign called by Saddam for =93volunteers willing to launch=
=20
jihad to liberate Palestine=94. It also served as a potent reminder of the=
=20
durability of the Iraqi leader, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Gulf W=
ar=20
later this month. (The London Times)=0E
FED SPRINGS RATE CUT TO CURB RECESSION FEARS=20
Alan Greenspan and the US Federal Reserve yesterday took decisive=20
action to revitalise America's stuttering economy, making the largest cut i=
n=20
interest rates for 8 years in a bid to prevent the current slowdown becomin=
g=20
a full-blown recession. The surprise 50 basis points reduction in the feder=
al=20
funds rate to 6% was the first half-percentage rate cut in that rate since=
=20
1992 and the first time for more than 2 years that rates have been cut=20
between meetings of the Fed's rate-setting open market committee.=20
The move, and an accompanying quarter percentage point drop in the less=20
widely used discount rate to 5.75%, electrified the stock market but baffle=
d=20
analysts, who had expected no change in rates until the committee's next=20
meeting on January 30. The Dow Jones Industrial Average immediately=20
spiralled 372 points higher while the Nasdaq, which dropped 8% on=20
Tuesday, shot up 277.02 or 12%. Brian Robinson, of strategists 4Cast said=20
"I am flabbergasted. I had to do a double-take on the screen. It almost=20
smells like these guys are a little panicked."=20
The Fed said its action was taken at a conference call of committee=20
members "in the light of further weakening of sales and production and in=20
the context of lower consumer confidence, tight conditions in some=20
segments of financial markets and high energy prices sapping household=20
and business purchasing power." Analysts said Mr Greenspan was probably=20
influenced by the worst Christmas sales for nearly a decade and Tuesday's=
=20
poor manufacturing data.=20
Henry Willmore, chief US economist at Barclays Capital, said: "This is one=
=20
of the more surprising moves the Fed has made in a long time. I'm a little=
=20
puzzled by some of the things they cited: low consumer confidence and high=
=20
energy prices." Paul Christopher, of AG Edwards & Sons, said: "The Fed=20
should have cut rates in December. This says 'I'm not sure'. Fundamentals=20
still point to a soft landing." However, president-elect George W Bush said=
=20
he was pleased with the move, adding that it would not derail his plans for=
a=20
$1.3tn tax cut package. "I think the cut was needed. It was a strong=20
statement that measures must be taken to make sure our economy does not=20
go into a tailspin."
In London, before the Fed's unexpected decision, the pound surged almost a=
=20
cent against the dollar. The euro lost half a cent against the pound, howev=
er=20
it plunged in New York, dropping below 93 cents in late trading. (The=20
London Telegraph)=20
* America's powerful central bank rode to the rescue of the world=92s ailin=
g=20
financial markets last night when it astounded Wall Streetwith a half-point=
=20
cut in US interest rates. Analysts said that the timing of the move reveale=
d=20
the depth of concern about the risks of recessionin America and rates could=
=20
fall again when the central bank meets at the end of the month. Some=20
market analysts applauded the Fed=92s move, but others argued that it=20
smacked of panic. (The London Times)=20
UNCLE ALAN GIVES THE MARKETS A BUBBLE BATH=20
Go Greenspan, Go. The 73-year-old chairman of the US Federal Reserve=20
has done it again. While we were waiting for the end-month meeting of the=20
US Federal Reserve's Open Markets Committee, the chairman was on the=20
case. Every morning he likes to get up at 6am and spend an hour "soaking=20
in the tub", which, he says, is good for his bad back. Yesterday must have=
=20
been some bath, with the bubbles bursting all over the place. He does not=20
like to see his feet in the tub, any more than he likes to peer into the de=
pths=20
of a recession. Within minutes of the cut it was time for some irrational=20
exuberance.=20
Mr Greenspan is not quite old enough to remember the Wall St crash, but=20
he knows how important confidence is. Perhaps it was the latest cover of=20
Time magazine predicting a slump, or the purchasing managers index=20
coming in at its lowest since the depths of the last recession, but a=20
confidence boost was certainly needed. Cheaper money will buy time for=20
telecoms and technology companies to sort out their balance sheets before=20
they run out of money, while encouraging investors and banks to be more=20
optimistic. Uncle Alan is still in charge, so don't write Goldilocks off ye=
t.=20
(The London Telegraph - Commentary)=20
* The Federal Reserve's decision to cut interest rates by half a percentage=
=20
point was almost certainly the right thing to do in Thursday's increasingly=
=20
gloomy circumstances for the US economy. Yet it also shows how wrong=20
even this august institution was about the state of the economy only a few=
=20
weeks ago. It may fail to end the gathering panic about the health of the=20
"new economy". It could even confirm it instead.=20
The speed with which the mood has changed is extraordinary. In October,=20
Goldman Sachs thought growth would be 4% in 2001 -- in December, that=20
was cut to 2.5%. Now, in its last publication of 2000, it asks: "Is the US=
=20
economy in recession?" Recessions are almost always unexpected. If=20
foreseen, the monetary authorities would have tried to forestall them. In t=
his=20
case, however, the central bank has been caught more than usually=20
unawares. The Federal Reserve started December with a bias towards=20
tightening its monetary policy. This was shifted to a bias towards easing=20
only on December 19. Now, two weeks later, the Federal Reserve has=20
acted.=20
This rapid shift in view may not be good for Alan Greenspan's reputation=20
for infallibility but it indicates something more important - his ability t=
o=20
respond swiftly to events. The action does, however, raise 2 contradictory=
=20
concerns - inevitably so at a time of rapid changes in economic=20
performance. The first concern is that the Federal Reserve has done too=20
little, too late. While Wall Street reacted with wild enthusiasm on=20
Wednesday, Main Street may fail to react with equal alacrity. It is even=20
possible that the cut will make people more nervous, since it demonstrates=
=20
the degree of concern now felt in the country's most respected institution.=
=20
The second worry is that the cut will work too well. Buoyed by the=20
conviction that the Federal Reserve will always act to keep the economy=20
moving, stock prices will now soar and the private sector's behaviour will =
go=20
back to profligacy as usual. If so, the Fed's action may merely postpone a=
=20
still bigger reckoning later on. At this stage, nobody knows which risk is =
the=20
greater. That is the nature of economic turning points. But if the Fed was=
=20
definitely wrong about the risks a month ago and may still be wrong today,=
=20
it has at least shown its usual flexibility. That is all one can hope for. =
No=20
central bank is infallible. But this one does at least learn quickly from i=
ts=20
errors. (The Financial Times - Editorial)=20
FAMILY ALMANAC WILL UNMASK THE NOBLE PRETENDERS=20
Dubious princes and other self-styled claimants to aristocratic European=20
lineage face an embarrassing New Year. After more than 50 years, the=20
Almanach de Gotha, the definitive guide to noble credentials, is about to=20
publish a new directory of all Europe's non-sovereign princely and ducal=20
houses. While this is good news for genealogists, snobs, fortune-seekers=20
and scheming mothers, it is bad news for fraudulent Euro-toffs.=20
Known as The Gotha by those who are in it, The Almanach was founded in=20
the Saxon duchy of Gotha in 1763 and was published there until 1944, after=
=20
which Gotha became part of communist East Germany. Publication was=20
revived in London in 1998 when a new Volume One was published=20
covering all Europe's royal and former royal houses. This proved such a hit=
=20
that The Gotha's management has decided to reproduce Volume Two,=20
covering all Europe's top non-royal families. Copies go on sale next month.=
=20
About 170 families, including those of every British duke, will be included=
.=20
The number of people listed will reach 10,000.=20
John Kennedy, the publisher, said yesterday: "Now that Volume Two is=20
back, we have an encyclopedic listing of all the members of all the smaller=
=20
non-sovereign families. For the self-ennobled aristocracy, this book is a=20
disaster, acting as a guillotine to hitherto unchecked ambition." The Gotha=
=20
does not carry quite the clout it once did. In 1807, Napoleon was so=20
infuriated that the latest edition did not give enough prominence to the=20
imperial house of Bonaparte that he decreed that his family should be=20
entered before all other royal dynasties. In 1913, at the wedding of Prince=
ss=20
Victoria of Prussia to Prince Ernst August of Hanover, guests were treated=
=20
to a new waltz which could only be danced by those in Volume One.=20
But even today, it remains a vital reference work for Europe's more=20
pedigree-obsessed aristocrats. In some noble German families, marrying=20
someone who is not in Volume One can result in the forfeiture of titles and=
,=20
in some cases, estates and property. All the new entries have been=20
scrutinised by a panel of genealogists but Mr Kennedy found that some=20
European nobles are less than loyal to their kinsmen. "You will get a=20
member of a family telling you that so-and-so is dead because they want=20
them out of the book. A few weeks later, like a tale from the crypt, the=20
allegedly dead person will suddenly make contact."=20
A new 2001 edition of Volume One will be published in April and, for the=20
first time, will include occupations. This means that The Gotha will includ=
e=20
its first reference to a pop group. The new Princess Heinrich Ruzzo of=20
Reuss will be listed as the former Anni-Frid Lyngstad, "a member of the=20
popular music group Abba". (The London Telegraph)=20

Subject: [bprlist] Archaeologists: Dividing Temple Mount Unfeasible
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 10:06:54 -0500
ARCHAEOLOGISTS: DIVIDING TEMPLE MOUNT UNFEASIBLE
As construction work ordered by the Islamic Wakf on the Temple
Mount continues without any archaeological supervision for the fourth
straight month, Israeli experts are saying that the idea of dividing the
area between Palestinian and Israeli control is simply unfeasible.
The concept of shared sovereignty, whereby the property above
ground would be under Palestinian rule while Israel would retain control
below ground, has been floated as a possible solution to the dispute over
the site, though it has been rejected by the Palestinians as inadequate.
Now, some eminent Israelis are saying that the idea is just not
workable.
"This is a silly and ignorant suggestion," said Prof. Danny
Bahat, who served as Jerusalem regional archaeologist for the Antiquities
Authority during the 1980s and who is now a lecturer at Bar-Ilan
University.
"What do you mean division? There is no such thing," he said.
Prof. Yisrael Levin of Hebrew University agreed.
"I have never understood what this above ground, below ground
distinction meant. After hearing about it, I waited for some clarification
and when that never came, I considered the idea a non-starter," he said.
"If this is just a legality which means that the ground is owned
by Israel and everything above bedrock is owned by Palestinians, then that
is basically saying that they are the sovereign," he added.
"It is impossible to divide the Temple Mount in half because the
whole area is one ancient Jewish building," said Dr. Eilat Mazar,
spokeswoman of the Committee Against the Destruction of Antiquities on the
Temple Mount, and a Hebrew University professor.
"Whoever wants to divide the mount in half, does not understand
its historic value," she said, noting that the holiness of the Temple Mount
is not the outer walls but everything within.
The basic problem, Dr. Mazar asserts, is that no one in the Wakf
or the Palestinian Authority is willing to recognize that the Temple Mount
carries any historic value for anyone except themselves.
The only real possibility in Dr. Mazar's view is to separate both
the Aksa mosque and the Dome of the Rock from the rest of the structure,
allowing the Palestinians direct access to their holy sites.
The current regional archaeologist for the Antiquities Authority,
Jon Seligman, said that from an archaeological point of view, the area is
indivisible, but he added that the issue has less to do with archaeology
than politics.
"The idea is to find a political solution that keeps and
conserves the theological basis," he said.
Seligman said that the important thing is to reach an agreement
that safeguards all antiquities.
For now, that is far from the case with Wakf construction - which
Seligman and the police term surfacing and re-flooring work and the
committee of archaeologists argue is large-scale destruction - going on
without any archaeological supervision since the wave of violence began.

Subject: [bprlist] A Thought for the Weekend
From: Pam Baker
Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 11:49:09 -0500
You might find this of interest. God bless you. Charlie Baker.
WALKING WITH GOD
In the Old Testament we are told: "Enoch walked with God and he was not,
for God took him." I have been wondering how to walk with God. God is
a spirit and I am not. However, there were three things came to my
attention recently.
First, every man has a spirit in him. (Zechariah 12:1) This is the
spirit that God put into man when He created him and I think the fact
that it made man different from other animals, the males and females
were created, not made, on the 6th day. After He made Adam of the dust
of the ground, God breathed in him the breath of life and 'man became a
living soul'. I think this brought Adam's spirit to life but it is
dormant, in everyone, until it is re-born by the Spirit of God.
Second, we are told that Enoch walked with God for 300 years before God
took him. Genesis 5:21-24 We do not know if Enoch´s spirit was ever
re-born or not, only that God took him, at age 365 years, and I am sure,
at that point, Enoch´s spirit was re-born. Today we do not have to wait
300 years to have our spirits reborn. When we repent and ask God to
forgive us, in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, our spirits are
reborn; we are given power to become sons of God (John 1:12) and, we
have the mind of Christ´. (I Corinthians 2:16)
Third, Amos 3:3 asks: "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?"
Two, in agreement, are two who have the same thoughts. Since we have
the mind of Christ´ we should ensure our thoughts are in tune with His
thoughts, which are spelled out in the Bible. When we do that I think
we can be sure, when He comes to rapture the Church we will be no more
for, like Enoch, God will take us. Praise the Lord!
