Astrology fuels panic in quake city
By Naveen Thukral

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/010202/80/az7r4.html

AHMEDABAD, India (Reuters) - A week after a brutal earthquake ripped
through western India, people in the city of Ahmedabad have been
gripped by panic following reports of Hindu astrological predictions
of an even more devastating quake.

"We will go inside only after the third or fourth of February when
the ill effects of the planets is over," said Naresh Singhvi, who
runs a small "paan" (betel leaf) shop in Gujarat's prosperous
commercial capital, Ahmedabad.

"There is going to be a very severe earthquake, more powerful than
this one," he added.

Rumours of a fresh disaster have been flying thick and fast since a
Gujarati publication quoted a Hindu astrologer as saying a powerful
quake would tear through Gujarat on Saturday.

Hindu astrologers say that Pluto, the planet of death in Hindu
astrology, and Mars, the planet that spells aggression, are aligned
ominously at the moment.

Many of the city's five million people, including some panic-stricken
Muslims, have been staying away from their high-rise apartments.

People say the fresh quake would be bigger than the one which hit
Bhuj, the town closest to the epicentre of last week's calamity. That
measured 7.9 on the Richter scale.

Officials say at least 30,000 died and thousands were left homeless
in India's worst natural disaster which struck on the morning of
January 26 when the country was getting ready to celebrate Republic
Day.

Dozens of aftershocks since then have only aggravated peoples' fears.

"I don't want to sleep at home because I will not be able to run if I
am asleep," said Pinky Jain, a housewife. "All the families in my
apartment block have decided that we will live together and die
together."

Bush team signals new U.N. direction
Decries 'erosion of parental authority' in internationalization of
family policy

By Mary Jo Anderson
=A9 2001 WorldNetDaily.com

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=3D!590

Editor's note: One of many major issues facing President George W.
Bush is the United States' relationship with the United Nations.
Correspondent Mary Jo Anderson reports on what appears to be a new
signal to the U.N. being sent by the Bush administration.

NEW YORK -- Some nations were caught off guard yesterday, as a United
States delegation to the United Nations clearly signaled a new
direction in U.S. policy under the Bush administration, calling for
greater "parental authority" when crafting policy on children.

Country delegates, ambassadors and special representatives gathered
for UNICEF's second preparatory meeting for the upcoming Special
Session on Children, Sept 19, 2001. Though a Bush appointment to the
U.N. ambassadorship has not been made public, Ambassador E. Michael
Southwick, deputy assistant secretary of state for international
organization affairs, presented the U.S. statement on the draft
document under consideration by the preparatory committee.

While international reaction to the U.S. statement was mostly
negative, observers in the gallery broke out in cheers after the
ambassador concluded his presentation. The statement referred to
the "erosion of parental authority" and suggested that nations be
invited to develop objectives pertinent to "their own goals and in
line with conditions and circumstances in their own countries." Other
popular points for those who welcomed the U.S. statement were the
calls for monitoring to be done at the national level and a focus on
education as President Bush has adopted for American children.

The U.S. address followed two days of a roll call of nations, each
expressing its basic goals for the draft document under discussion.
The document will replace the decade-old World Declaration on the
Survival, Protection and Development of Children. The key factor in
the U.S. presentation was its emphatic position on the Convention on
the Rights of the Child, or CRC.

"The Convention on the Rights of the Child may be a positive tool for
promoting child welfare for those countries that have adopted it. But
we believe the text goes too far when it asserts entitlements based
on economic, social and cultural rights. =85 The human rights-based
approach =85 poses significant problems as used in this text."

The draft document that delegates were discussing throughout the week
makes frequent reference to the CRC, but the U.S. statement was
careful to distinguish between the CRC and the Plan of Action that
was the result of the 1990 World Summit for Children. The U.S.
rejected attempts to make the CRC the "litmus test to measure a
nation's commitment to children."

The European Union had adopted the opposite stance. On Wednesday,
Ambassador Thomas Hammarberg, the head of the Swedish delegation,
spoke on behalf of the European Union and 13 other nations aligned
with the EU's statement to the assembly.

"In our opinion the rights-based approach should be the lead theme
throughout the text," Hammarberg said, adding that "the full
implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is the
overarching objective." Also on Wednesday, however, the Holy See, the
Vatican's observer mission to the U.N., delivered its statement
stressing that rights of the child must be seen in the context of the
family.

Tension among pro-family groups had heightened in the weeks leading
up to the second preparatory meeting. They fear that the U.N. Special
Session will adopt new international measures that could threaten
parental rights and give sweeping new rights to adolescents -- rights
to reading material of their choice, rights to unsupervised
contraceptive and abortion access, rights to assembly -- without the
safeguard of parental reins.

"Rights to information according to the Convention on the Rights of
the Child permits media of the child's choice; books, videos, the
Internet. Article 13 means as a father I can't screen my daughter's
consumption on the Internet? What if my 12-year-old son wants to
collect Internet pornography?" asked a South American delegate who
requested anonymity.

Osama Halawani of Saudi Arabia found the U.S. statement "most
reasonable" in its refusal to accept the U.N.'s CRC treaty as the
sole framework for the protection of children. The U.S. and Somalia
are the only nations that have not ratified the convention. In the
U.S., many legal experts question the treaty's intrusiveness into
domestic policy. Certain activists claim the failure to ratify a
convention that virtually the rest of the world has accepted is a
diplomatic and political embarrassment for Americans.

Some Europeans have criticized U.S. participation at the U.N.'s
preparatory sessions because it has failed to become a party to the
treaty. Despite the Clinton administration's agreement with the EU on
most issues that more traditional cultures found problematical, the
U.S. had not signed the CRC.

A member of the Finnish delegation, Pia Heilo, found the U.S.
statement disappointing: "It is against many of the provisions we are
fighting to achieve here."

Yet others found problems with the underlying assumptions in the CRC
and the draft document before the delegates, which is based, in part,
on the CRC.

"Wherever you read in the draft document or in the CRC 'diverse forms
of the family,' that's a red flag," said Anna Halpine of World Youth
Alliance. Such language could mean a homosexual liaison as in France,
where a Pact of Civil Solidarity applies to both heterosexual and
homosexual "domestic partners."

Opposing arguments from more than 400 non-governmental organizations
that favor a strong U.N. guarantee of children's rights insist that
the world community must address the growing mistreatment of
children. They cite child slavery, forced labor, forced early
marriages, lack of nutrition, child prostitution and a mushrooming
population of AIDS orphans. Youth representatives added their voices
to the support for an international guarantee of rights.

Jorg Tremmel of the German-based Foundation for the Rights of Future
Generations has proposed lowering the voting age to 13. He cites the
recent Florida case of 12-year-old Lionel Tate convicted as an adult
of first-degree murder. He points out that if a youth can be
prosecuted as an adult, "then that same 12 year-old is capable of
understanding the voting process."

Conservative U.N. watchers focus on the growing tendency by some
bureaucrats and policy makers to aspire to utopian goals: universal
education, health care, clean environment and equal access to the
political process. While these hopes are noble, say seasoned
diplomats, they are not realistic, and legitimate goals must be
substituted.

The U.S. statement made reference to this tendency: "In its present
form, the draft is a confusing mix of political and legal actions. =85
Its treatment of domestic obligations and international support is
unbalanced and unrealistic."

Following the plenary session, the U.S. delegation held a press
conference. Attendees spilled out into the corridors and questions
were shouted through the doorway.

Southwick fielded questions about a new U.N. ambassador from the U.S.
and noted, "It is usually a political appointment, but it is early in
the Bush process." Questioned as to whether the U.S. would ratify the
CRC, the ambassador replied, "It is highly unlikely." In further
comments he observed that the legal protections for children in the
U.S. were "among the strongest in the world."

Several people inquired about the change of direction in the U.S.
position on particular issues featured in the draft document. Others
questioned the presence of new faces on the U.S. delegation.
Delegation coordinator, Darcy Zotter explained that the process "is
transparent" and that "a range of opinion" had been sought.

Zotter invited representatives from non-governmental organizations to
seek appointments to the delegation. However, she continued, "The
delegation, despite any one member's personal position, must support
the Bush administration's position."

'South Park' TV show pushes limits of animated comedy

Editor's note: Yesterday, WND reporter Anthony C. LoBaido presented
an analysis of the wildly popular animated television show "South
Park" and the movie based on the series. In today's installment,
LoBaido reviews several specific episodes, revealing the unique humor
and controversial themes employed by the creators of "South Park."
By Anthony LoBaido
=A9 2001 WorldNetDaily.com

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=3D21578

It's a show about children, but "Sesame Street" it is not. The
creative minds behind the TV program "South Park," a product of
Comedy Central, are equal-opportunity offenders, skewering religion,
traditional values and those -- from both ends of the ideological
spectrum -- who have deeply held beliefs.

The show contains constant themes focusing on human waste, debasing
Christmas, minimizing or mocking the ideas of abortion being wrong,
sin, salvation in Heaven and judgment in Hell. Moreover, "South Park"
goes out of its way to portray Jesus and his name in the context of a
NAMBLA-style homosexual child rapist. A digitized photo of the Sacred
Heart of Jesus is scanned into a newspaper in one episode, even
though that photo adds nothing to the plot or story line.

One celebrated character is Mr. Hankey, literally a piece of human
waste. In "Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo," a take-off of Frosty the
Snowman, an opening song and accompanying artwork describe the
content, color and texture of a variety of human waste.

But this is only the beginning. In another episode, Mr. Hankey goes
on to smear himself all over Christmas dinner. The piece of human
waste is eaten by a large group of "South Park" children who
sing, "Yum, yum, yum."

Dr. Robin Bernhoft, surgeon and talk-show host, told WorldNetDaily
that the eating of human waste is a medical illness called
coprophagia syndrome. According to historical evidence, both Catholic
and Protestant missionaries in China, South Asia and Africa, serving
in the field since the early days of Christianity, documented a great
deal of information about human waste and demonic influence. These
missionaries claimed that the eating of human waste, an obsession
with it, and/or smearing it on one's body or food are primary signs
of demonic oppression or possession.

It is well-known that Nazi leader Adolf Hitler had Eva Braun and
other women defecate upon him.

While such habits may be seen in brain-damaged or mentally retarded
individuals, high-functioning individuals may sometimes exhibit
urophilia or coprophagia as part of a "paraphilia," or abnormal
sexual arousal disorder. Prostitutes are sometimes paid to
participate in such activities. Otto Fenichel's classic work "The
Psychoanalytic Theory of Neurosis and Psychoanalytic Theory" links
these habits with "fixations" or problems resolving certain
developmental stages. Coprophagia, for example, is seen as a failure
to resolve the "anal stage" of development.

A surgeon in Long Island who served as a doctor in the Vietnam war
told WorldNetDaily: "The Vietcong would put human waste on very sharp
bamboo sticks that they placed in rice paddies. Then our boys would
come by and step on them. This put human waste into the blood stream
and caused all kinds of sickness. I saw several cases of what I
diagnosed as demonic possession in Vietnam, although I would never
officially report it." The doctor, known to this writer since 1977,
asked that his name not be used, citing his belief in demons
as "incompatible with the current medical establishment."

A link between coprophagia and demon possession may date back to the
time of Jesus. A footnote in one study Bible indicates that in the
Mark 3 passage where the Pharisees accuse Jesus of working for Satan
in casting out demons, ancient manuscripts either read "Beelzebub,"
lord of the flies, or "Beelzebul," lord of excrement, and
that "excrement" was the word Jews used to describe pagan rituals.

Temptation Island fails to entice watchdogs
02 FEBRUARY 2001

http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,625520a11,FF.html

By STEVE HOPKINS
Moral watchdogs want to ban a TV show that tests couples by putting
them on an island full of good-looking singles. The aim of the
programme is to make them give in to lust.

Temptation Island, which will screen on TV3, Monday night, has caused
a huge stir overseas.

"It's ratings drivel," says Christian Heritage party leader Rev
Graham Capill.

In America, three big advertisers cancelled their contracts with a TV
network when it was revealed that film crew members had sex with
contestants.

Several male contestants also came to blows over the girls.

Church leaders here are already calling for the show to be pulled.

Capill says the show is against the "sanctity of marriage," and
shouldn't be shown.

He's campaigning to get the show banned.

The programme-makers try to test the fidelity of four unmarried
couples by putting them on a tropical island full of scantily clad
singles, including a Playboy model and a male masseur. It's the job
of the model and masseur to seduce the others.

Capill says Temptation Island has no educational role and will give
kids the wrong idea about relationships.

"It's saying it is okay to split couples up and put your own
relationship at risk. The message kids need these days is that
marriage is for life, that it is a commitment, it's sacrosanct."

TV3 publicity head Raegen Houldridge told Truth that they had
received no complaints and expected the programme to be very popular.

"These people in the programme choose to do it. And it's addictive
television," she says.

"This is nothing we haven't seen before at 7.30pm, and it's been
through our censors."

But Family Life, an organisation that organises marriage ceremonies,
calls the show concept "ridiculous".

"There is enough temptation in society without some TV show putting
it on a plate in front of people for the sake of a TV show. It's
crazy."

Auckland pastor Graeme Lee says Temptation Island is in keeping with
several other programmes on TV3. It reflects the current trends in
New Zealand society and is totally against the "sanctity of marriage."

Communications director for the Catholic Church, Lyndsay Freer says
the show is "over the top."

"It is reinforcing a very negative belief to young people that
marriage is not a serious commitment and in terms of family values it
can only have a detrimental affect."

Prime Minister Helen Clark, who has said in the past that New Zealand
TV channels offer poor choice of programmes, would not comment. Nor
would Broadcasting Minister Marian Hobbs.

The Broadcasting Standards Authority said it had had no complaints as
of yet.

On the topic of marriage:

In 1999, Born agains were more likely than non-Christians to have experienced
divorce (27% versus 24%, respectively).

How did radioactive uranium get into space?
Russia's space station bows out with an enigma

Exclusive from New Scientist magazine

http://www.newscientist.com/dailynews/news.jsp?id=ns9999369

The Mir space station has thrown up a last puzzle, just a month
before it is due to crash into the Pacific Ocean - how did tiny
radioactive specks of decay products of uranium end up on one of its
instrument covers?

The American scientists who discovered the radioactivity say it is
the first evidence that space around the Earth is contaminated with
uranium.

The scientists, from California Polytechnic State University in Saint
Luis Obispo, have three possible scenarios for its source. It could
have come from nuclear weapons tested in space in the 1960s, or from
uranium-powered satellites that have burnt up on re-entry into the
atmosphere.

 ICEJ NEWS
 SPECIAL REPORT
The Balkanization of the Middle East

A new word entered the lexicon of Palestinian nationalism this past
week - "uranium." PLO chief Yasser Arafat, on two occasions, charged
Israel with using "uranium" weapons against the Palestinians in the
course of the recent conflict in the Middle East. It was an absurd
allegation he had handily borrowed from the widely reported rumors in
mid-January of a rash of cancer cases linked to NATO's use of weapons
tipped with depleted uranium in its 1999 bombing campaign against
Serbia. The intent was clear - plant in the minds of the world the
Serbia/Israel connection.

Throughout the four months of the current Palestinian uprising, the
PLO leadership has ratcheted up their propaganda efforts to
"internationalize" the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by equating it to
the "ethnic cleansing" and "war crimes" committed in Kosovo. For if
such a linkage can be established, it both justifies and necessitates
similar military action against Israel. NATO air strikes on Tel Aviv?
It may seem folly, but it bears watching.

When NATO forces launched their air campaign against Yugoslavia on
March 24, 1999, the Western world stood united behind NATO, even
though the military operation was carried out without a mandate of the
United Nations. The goal was the crippling of the Serbian war machine
in Kosovo and enforcing compliance with the international peace plan
drawn up at Rambouillet, France.

One Western nation stood out for initially failing to voice support
for what was called the "Allied Operation against Serb atrocities on
the Balkan" - Israel. Minister of Foreign Affairs Ariel Sharon
explained why Israel hesitated to support the military action. "If we
support force to resolve a regional conflict, we could be the next
victim," Sharon was quoted as saying at the onset of the Balkan
campaign. Soon afterwards, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu distanced
himself somewhat from Sharon's remarks and sent a field hospital to
the Balkans to help Albanian refugees.

At the same time, however, Sharon's reservations were validated when
Arafat and other Palestinian officials began calling for a similar
international response to end "Israel's atrocities against the
Palestinian people." Not only the Arab media, but even the respected
Economist branded the plight of the Palestinian people "an unpunished
ethnic cleansing." Meanwhile, Israel's former prime minister and most
prominent dove, Shimon Peres, could not resist the analogy and
declared at the time that the Jewish settlements in Judea/Samaria and
Gaza were bound to create a "Kosovo-like" situation in Israel.

Chilled by such thoughts, some right-wing Knesset members called for
an end to the air strikes. If the West intervenes on behalf of an
independence-seeking ethnic minority in Kosovo, one asked, "couldn't
it happen here too, in a different variation today or tomorrow?"

That was 1999 - a mere two years ago. Today, after the failure of the
Oslo peace talks to produce a final-status agreement and in the midst
the surging intifada, it is again not just Palestinian voices speaking
of the "balkanization of the Middle East." No less a body than the
Council on Foreign Relations - the American establishment's
influential forum for steering US foreign policy - has begun to
prescribe similar treatments for these two arenas of conflict and
tension.

The CFR's widely respected flagship journal Foreign Affairs,
reflecting its regional reconfiguration of the world map, features in
the January/February 2001 issue a new section entitled "The Middle
East & the Balkans." The section contains three articles on Israel and
the former Yugoslavia. In the first article, the author makes a direct
comparison between Gaza and Kosovo's war-torn capital, Pristina. More
noteworthy are the article's proposed solutions for both the
Israeli-Palestinian and Balkan conflicts.

Addressing Israel and the Palestinians, Arthur Hertzberg urges that
"both sides should abandon their messianic dreams" and make "pragmatic
arrangements that bring some calm to the world." Both peoples must
tone down their national and religious aspirations, meaning a mutual
lowering of the religious significance of Jerusalem and Israeli
thinking that "everything between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan
River was inalienably Jewish."

Foreign Affairs delivers the same message in a more direct tone to
Serbia. The magazine calls upon Belgrade to "join the club," meaning
Serbia should abandon their "preoccupation with the nineteenth-century
concept of a nation-state with borders" and "embrace the concept of a
transnational integration" into Europe. The region's fundamental
choice is presented as "becoming less Balkans" and moving on to
"becoming more European." And this choice, the author threatens, "over
time might well mean a choice between peace and war."

The CFR journal continues with this theme in a following section, a
collection of articles on the theme "Bridging the Gap of
Globalization." One article entitled "Are human right universal"
claims to be "a defense of truly global human rights." The following
essay, "Toward a global parliament," sees the need for a global
council which would "enforce the collective efforts to protect the
environment, control or eliminate weapons, safeguard human rights and
protect the global community."

In Israel, the main concern of many leftist politicians is to comply
with the expectations of the world community. Prominent political
leaders and intellectuals are joining hands behind the thrust of ideas
now commonly referred to as "post-Zionism." Their goal is to "free"
the State of Israel from its unique Jewish character and to make it a
"nation like all other nations." A most prominent spokesman of this
trend is Shimon Peres, who, in his book "The New Middle East,"
elaborates on how Israel can qualify as a proper global citizen. "The
entire idea of the small national state - the Jewish state included -
has collapsed," Peres explains in his book. "The area of the former
country of Yugoslavia are a prime example of this. The supranational
trend predominates everywhere."

In fact, according to Peres, Arab and Jewish nationalism were to blame
for triggering interminable war in the region. Israel's Foreign
Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami concurred only a few days ago when he spoke of
a "Bosnia-like" situation in Israel.

There are clear indications that the Government of Prime Minister Ehud
Barak has been stepping to the CFR beat, perhaps voluntarily, and it
has brought Israel to a dangerous precipice. So dangerous that the
nation appears primed to place noted hawk Ariel Sharon at the helm in
hopes he will manage the Palestinian uprising in a new, firmer way.

Unnerved by the steady political demise of Barak in public opinion
polls, the CFR invited the caretaker Israeli premier to defend his
peace-making record in a conference call with Council members in early
January. In a speech that resembled a report to a board of directors,
Barak explained at length his past policies and current plans for
resolving the diplomatic impasse and quelling the renewed Palestinian
violence. But the appeal for understanding apparently failed. Henry
Siegman, a leading Middle East analyst and senior fellow in the CFR's
"Middle East & the Balkans" section, penned an opinion column
published the very next day in THE INTERNATIONAL HERALD TRIBUNE which
called for Barak to step down in deference to Peres as the Labor
party's candidate for prime minister.

Israel's ultimate choice, so it seems, is to fit into the global
framework or else... If she decides not to comply, the choice over
time may well mean a choice between "peace and war." Arafat keeps
hounding the halls of power for an international force to "protect the

Sharon may be standing in his way.

The following quoted material and apocryphal references is from "The
Messiah Texts" by Raphael Patai, pages 220-221. The extra-Biblical
material is not presented here to compete with or lend credence to
the Scriptures, but instead is given for comparison. Hopefully some
may find it useful in their own personal studies. Patai's viewpoint
is that Messianic expectations expressed in various Judaic material,
as well as the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, are folkore
or "legends" as noted in the subtitle of his book: "Jewish Legends of
Three Thousand Years". Regardless of Patai's own personal beliefs,
his compilation of Messianic references can be quite valuable.

"The earliest indication of the idea of a new Jerusalem is found in
the apocryphal First Book of Enoch (written about 150 B.C.E.) in
which it is referred to as 'a new house' brought by 'the Lord of the
sheep' for his 'flock', that is, the Jewish people. By the early
first century C.E. this concept had developed into the expectation
that a new 'building' (i.e., Temple) would be built in Zion, "renewed
in glory and perfected for evermore" (2 Baruch, see below). About
the time of the destruction of Jerusalem (70 C.E.) the author of 4
Ezra expected a new city, 'now invisible, [to] appear.'

"In the Talmud and Midrash, the heavenly Jerusalem is a standard
Aggadic* notion, presented in great detail and in many variants. In
them, the undying love of the Jewish people for Jerusalem, the Holy
City, the city of the Temple and the royal seat of David, finds
eloquent expression in limitless flights of fantasy describing the
glories of the future Jerusalem in the days of the Messiah. This
Messianic Jerusalem, which will descend in its entirety from heaven,
will comprise a thousand towers, fortresses, street corners, pools,
and cisterns, it will extend as far as Damascus, its height will
increase by miles, its gates will be huge precious stones, jewels and
pearls will be scattered all over its streets and environs like
pebbles, and its radiance will light up the whole world and will rise
up to God's Throne of Glory."

1 Enoch 90:29
And I saw till the Lord of the sheep brought a new house, greater and
loftier than the first, and set it up in the place of the first which
had been folded up: all its pillars were new, and its ornaments were
new and larger than those of the first, the old one which He had
taken away, and all the sheep were within it.

2 [Syriac] Baruch 32:2-4
After a little time the building of Zion will be shaken in order that
it may be built again. But that building will not remain, but will
again after a time be rooted out, and will remain desolate until the
time. And afterwards it must be renewed in glory, and perfected for
evermore.

4 Ezra 7:26-27
For behold the days come, and it shall be when the signs which I have
foretold you shall come to pass. Then shall the city that is now
invisible appear, and the land which is now concealed be seen. And
whosoever is delievered from the predicted evils shall see my wonders.

*NOTE: Midrash is the Judaic commentary literature of the Scriptures.
The word "midrash" comes from the Hebrew "darash" which means "to
inquire." Halakic Midrash deals with the specific rulings and
practices of Jewish law. Aggadic (Hebrew for "telling, narration")
Midrash is a device which deals with everything else that is not
halaka (that is, pertaining to the Law) and can include folklore,
legend, biography, allegory, animal fables, imaginative exposition,
etc. The Book of Revelation has been described as an example of
Aggadic Midrash. An example of Halakic Midrash would be Yeshua's
(Jesus') discussion in Matthew referred to as "The Sermon on the
Mount."

BUSH SEES GREATER TOLERANCE OF RELIGION
President Bush yesterday said the federal government, in its zeal to
maintain a separation of church and state, has been punishing
religious institutions - a policy he pledged to reverse. "The days of
discriminating against religious institutions simply because they are
religious must come to an end," Mr. Bush told thousands of national
and international leaders gathered in Washington for the annual
National Prayer Breakfast. "We do not prescribe any prayer; we
welcome all prayer," Mr. Bush said. "This is the tradition of our
nation, and it will be the standard of my administration.

COMMISSIONER: WATER CRISIS WORST IN ISRAEL'S HISTORY
The nation is facing the most severe water crisis in its history
and "even before then," Water Commissioner Shimon Tal declared
yesterday. He called on the public to adopt stringent water-saving
measures in light of the badly depleted state of Lake Kinneret and
the main underground reservoirs - the Coastal and Mountain Aquifers.
Tal said the situation had been exacerbated by inadequate rainfall so
far this winter and all efforts now have to be concentrated on
conserving water, particularly in the urban sector.

U.N. CONDEMNS ISRAEL BORDER VIOLATION WITH LEBANON
With the naked eye, you can see the yellow bulldozer and the long
trail of dust as it pushes the foundations for a new frontier fence
north into Lebanon. The Indian UN soldiers watch it through
fieldglasses. "How can we tell how far it will go?" Major Chhahal
asks. "They've been doing this work for three days, right on the edge
of Gaghar." It all looks innocent. But it is not. Just days before
the elections that may turn Ariel Sharon into a prime minister, the
Israeli army is building a new border fence on Lebanese territory and
in clear violation of UN Security Council Resolution 425.

PHILIPPINES RENEWS VOLCANO WARNING
People have been seen returning to tend farms in the shadow of Mount
Mayon, prompting scientists to reiterate their warning on Friday to
stay clear of the volcano. A danger zone with a six-km (2.7-mile)
radius was declared and acting Defence Secretary Eduardo Erimita
ordered on Wednesday the evacuation of 22,000 residents in the area.
Since early January, there have been increasing signs that Mayon
could be nearing an eruption.

MELTING OF HUGE GLACIER 'IS LIKELY TO RAISE SEAS'
Worldwide sea levels are likely to rise because a huge glacier is
melting at an unprecedented rate, possibly because of global warming.
British researchers publish evidence today suggesting that West
Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier, which measures 190 miles by 15
miles, is thinning at a rate that will set the glacier afloat. This
would destabilise an ice sheet that is half the size of Europe within
600 years. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/et?

RELIGIOUS LEADERS CAUTIOUS ON BUSH PLAN
Washington area religious leaders heartily agree with President Bush
that faith is a great motivator, and they welcome his recognition of
what faith-based groups can accomplish in helping people. But they
are not unanimous on the merits of taking government funds, as
evidenced by their responses to the first program that made federal
dollars directly available to religious groups -- the "charitable
choice" provision in 1996 welfare reform legislation.

ENTERTAINMENT THAT EVANGELIZES
Coming today to a multiplex near you: God, faith and the Apocalypse.
While that's not the kind of car-chase, sex and special-effects fare
that usually wends its way to chain movie theaters, a coterie of

million to make sure that Jesus has as much of a chance at your
entertainment dollar this weekend as masked killers and cheerleaders.

Subject: [bprlist] Approved Unto God
From: Pam
Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2001 11:58:55 -0500

All Christians seek to be approved unto God, I know I do, and many
people work hard at being approved but they are not sure they will be.
The fact is God has told us exactly how to be obtain His approval, all
we have to do is understand what He has said and do it.

2 Timothy 2:15

"Study to show thyself approved unto God,a workman that needeth not to
be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

The KJV scripture tells us we are to ‘study´. However, the Greek word,
translated as ‘study´ is ‘spoudazoo´ meaning: to ‘use speed´, that is,
to ‘make effort´, ‘be prompt or earnest´. I have always thought of
study as something that requires effort, something that must be done in
a thorough way, but I always looked at it as something to be fitted in
with other activities, except during school hours. This tells us study
requires ‘making an effort´ and doing it earnestly (in a thorough
manner) but these are secondary. The main thing is to ‘use speed´. We
all wish to be approved unto God but we must ‘use speed´, we must be in
a hurry to do so.

We are all aware we are workmen but, if we are to be ‘workmen worthy of
His hire´, this tells us what we should be working at. We should be
‘rightly dividing the word of truth´. We must take the Bible, the ‘word
of truth´, and divide all that is written in it, into the correct
component parts. It does not tell us what we are to do with those parts
but it is reasonable, I think, to conclude we are to join the parts
together again. Then, if we have done both the ‘dividing´ and the
joining together ‘rightly´ we will be approved by God. In doing so, of
course, we will have come a little closer to knowing the mind of the
Lord. Praise the Lord!

There is also, I think, an implied condition. The raw material we have
been given, with which to do our work, is the ‘word of truth´, which are
in the Bible. If we do not accept the words in the Bible (in the
original autographs) as truth then we will be using the wrong material
in our work. The end product will not pass inspection and we will have
been working in vain.

I pray we will all make an effort to rightly divide the word of truth,
earnestly and thoroughly, and will all be in a hurry to do so! Praise
the Lord!

"His Temperature Has Fallen -- God Exists!", Says Naina Yeltsin

http://www.russiatoday.com/news.php3?id=277102&brief=text

MOSCOW, Feb 1, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) Naina Yeltsin, wife of
the former Russian president Boris Yeltsin celebrating his 70th
birthday in hospital, praised God Thursday for a sudden fall in her
husband's temperature.

"His temperature has gone down -- God exists!" she exclaimed in an
interview on ORT television given at the Moscow hospital where the
former Kremlin chief is receiving treatment for a suspected viral
infection.

"It's sad to celebrate a birthday in hospital," she noted -- though
Yeltsin was visited by his many members of his family, including
grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with his successor in
the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin. ((c) 2001 Agence France Presse)

*** Dad jailed for dog-house daughter

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP) - A father was ordered to spend 30 days in jail
Thursday for forcing his 7-year-old daughter to sleep in a doghouse to
show her how she could end up if living with him didn't work out.
Christian Williams, 33, also must pay a $500 fine and take a parenting
class for pleading guilty to felony abuse and neglect charges. He told
a judge he kept the child outside for two nights because less severe
punishments had not deterred her bad behavior. He wanted her to
understand that she could end up homeless if living with him didn't
work out, he said. Prosecutors said the punishment lasted two weeks.
Williams and the girl's stepmother, Jennifer Williams, were arrested
Aug. 13 after a neighbor told police she heard the girl scream,
"Please, Daddy, let me in." The stepmother pleaded guilty to the same
charges and is to be sentenced Friday. When police found the girl in
the 4-by-8-foot plywood doghouse, she had not bathed or been fed in
two days, prosecutors said. She was covered in mosquito bites and
soaked from rain that leaked through the roof during a thunderstorm.
The girl also had a soggy cast on her wrist, which broke when another
child dropped her in day care, her father said.

*** Abortion doctor convicted

OCALA, Fla. (AP) - An abortion doctor was convicted Thursday of
trying to extort millions of dollars from a Florida county by
falsely accusing a county official of bomb threats and intimidation.
James Scott Pendergraft, who owns several Florida clinics, was found
guilty in federal court of all charges against him - conspiracy,
attempted extortion and mail fraud - and could get 30 years in prison.
His real estate adviser, Michael Spielvogel, was convicted of the same
charges, plus lying to the FBI and filing a false statement. He could
get 40 years. No sentencing date was set. Pendergraft's supporters
claimed the prosecution was politically motivated by abortion
opponents in the community 75 miles northwest of Orlando. Prosecutors
said the case was about extortion, not abortion. The defendants were
accused of lying in affidavits in an effort to extort a big settlement
from Marion County in exchange for dropping a lawsuit. The lawsuit
claimed the county and the city of Ocala weren't allowing off-duty
police officers to moonlight at Pendergraft's clinic.

*** Barak calls off Arafat meeting

JERUSALEM (AP) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak called off
international efforts Thursday to arrange a summit meeting with
Yasser Arafat, his aides said, citing continuing violence on a day two
Israelis and two Palestinians were killed by gunfire. The official,
who requested anonymity, said the proximity of Israel's Feb. 6
election was another factor in Barak's decision. Some analysts said a
summit might have helped the bleak re-election chances of Barak, who
trails hard-line challenger Ariel Sharon by a wide margin in polls.
Barak had come under pressure to allow elder statesman Shimon Peres to
run in his place. But Barak chose to remain in the race, allowing a
midnight Thursday deadline to pass after which parties can no longer
change candidates. Weekly polls showed Sharon's lead over Barak has
hovered around 20 percentage points. Harried by constant questions
about whether he planned to step aside, Barak has said the real
election campaign would begin only after the deadline.

*** UN doesn't find uranium-Ill link

PRISTINA, Yugoslavia (AP) - Scientific studies have not proven a link
between exposure to depleted uranium used in NATO weapons and the
onset of cancer or other illnesses, a team of U.N. experts said
Thursday. The four-member team of experts from the World Health
Organization traveled to the southern Yugoslav province of Kosovo
after reports that soldiers serving with NATO-led peacekeepers in the
Balkans had become ill. The former top U.N. administrator in Kosovo,
Bernard Kouchner, requested the study. NATO's use of ammunition
containing armor-piercing depleted uranium in bombing campaigns in
Bosnia in 1995 and in Yugoslavia in 1999 has sparked fear across
Europe that it may have caused serious illnesses in peacekeeping
troops. NATO has repeatedly denied that the ammunition could cause
cancer or other ailments. The WHO team told reporters in Kosovo's
capital, Pristina, that they found no firm evidence "to link
individual medical cases in Kosovo to exposure to depleted uranium."
They acknowledged, however, that much more analysis was needed.

*** Pope again condemns gay marriages

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Stressing again the Vatican's opposition to gay
marriage, Pope John Paul II on Thursday said there was no possibility
that the Church would redefine its view of matrimony. "Marriage is not
just any old union between human persons, susceptible to being
configured according to a plurality of cultural models," the pope said
in a speech to the Roman Rota, the Vatican tribunal that can grant
marriage annulments. "When the church teaches that matrimony is a
natural thing, it proposes a truth made plain by reason for the good
of the couples and of society," said the pontiff. In November, the
Vatican blasted lawmakers for giving legal recognition to so-called
"de facto" unions - including those between homosexuals - and said
attempts to allow adoption by gays were "a great danger." That Vatican
document reflected denunciations over the past several years by the
pontiff.

*** Norwegians mobilize against racism

OSLO, Norway (AP) - Tens of thousands of demonstrators marched
through Oslo on Thursday to protest racism and violence in the wake of
what was seen as Norway's first racial killing. A 15-year-old black
teen-ager, Benjamin Hermansen, was stabbed to death last Friday near
his home. Six neo-Nazis have been charged in the case. "The killer's
knife took a life, but it also did something else: It cut into our
basic values," Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg told the crowd gathered
in the bitter cold. The march and rally, backed by about 150
government and private groups, was among the largest ever in Norwegian
capital of 500,000 people. Local media estimated about 20,000 to
30,000 attended the demonstration, but a count was nearly impossible
as marchers spilled onto small side streets from the main downtown
square, home of the Nobel Peace Prize.

*** Polar ice sheet shows shrinkage

WASHINGTON (AP) - Scientists have worried for decades that the
Antarctic ice sheet was shrinking, threatening a global rise in sea
level. Now, satellite studies show that about 7.5 cubic miles of ice
have eroded from a key area in just eight years. Melting of that much
ice doesn't mean that it is time to get into boats, said one
researcher, but the finding may be a "yellow warning flag" that
confirms long-term changes are under way in the ice fields covering
the South Polar region. The study, which appears Friday in the journal
Science, involved altitude measurements of the West Antarctica Ice
Sheet, the smaller of two major ice sheets. It covers 740,000 square
miles of the frozen continent. Based on satellite measurements it
appears that since 1992 the ice sheet has lost ice principally through
the speeded-up movement of the Pine Island Glacier, an ice stream that
drains about a third of the ice sheet.

*** Cars banned for the day in Bogota

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) - Residents of Bogota commuted to work on foot,
bicycles, roller skates and even an antique diesel locomotive
Thursday, when a ban on private cars transformed the usually
traffic-clogged capital. Many found the one-day respite from the
blaring horns, edgy drivers and added smog all too brief. Car-Free Day
was first instituted a year ago in Bogota by Mayor Enrique Penalosa, a
bicycle enthusiast who delivered speeches about the evils of the
automobile. Voters later approved a referendum for an annual Car-Free
Day, held the first Thursday of February. During his three-year-term,
Penalosa sharply restricted car use during rush hours, built hundreds
of miles of bike paths, and stuck cement posts all over city sidewalks
to prevent people from parking cars in front of stores.

*** Aryan Nations to meet at ex-base

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A white supremacist group losing the site of its
annual conference to bankruptcy plans to hold this year's event at a
former Navy base where soldiers once trained to fight fascism. Many in
the area are upset at the Aryan Nation renting the northern Idaho site
of the Farragut Naval Training Center, one of the largest training
bases during World War II. But officials say they have little choice
but to allow the group to use the property, now Farragut State Park.
The group has paid a $325 deposit to camp for three days, beginning
July 5, at the park near the Washington state line. For more than two
decades, the neo-Nazi group has held its Aryan World Congress at
founder Richard Butler's 20-acre northern Idaho compound, usually
drawing dozens of followers. But the compound is to be sold at a Feb.
13 bankruptcy auction to satisfy part of a $6.3 million civil judgment
against Butler, the Aryan Nations and three of Butler's supporters.
The sum was awarded last September to two family members who sued
after they were attacked by Aryan Nations security guards in 1998.

Europe faces up to prospect of Sharon victory in Israel
Weekend News Today
Lead: Kelly
Source: AFP

Fri Feb 2,2001 -- Two years after Europeans hailed the election of
Labour's Ehud Barak as a man of peace, many are today struggling to
conceal their dismay at the prospect of his defeat by Likud hardliner
Ariel Sharon. An uncomfortable silence has replaced the warm welcome
that greeted Barak's arrival in power. And with the Israeli election
just days away, eyes are now turning towards Washington to see what
action the new George W. Bush administration will take. Although
virtually excluded from the Middle East peace negotiations, Europe is
concerned at the lack of progress and dismayed at the escalating
violence.
France, which was president of the EU during the latest round of
talks, is particularly keen to champion the cause of peace. Foreign
Minister Hubert Vedrine this week observed that while the EU had
economic influence in the Middle East it had, up until now, no
political role. Sweden, which has taken over the EU presidency from
France, has so far refused to comment on the implications of a Sharon
victory.

But Denmark's foreign minister, Mogens Lykketoft, said: "Failure to
reach a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians will
kindle the flames of violence in the region." The country's biggest
daily newspaper, the conservative Jyllands-Posten, recalled the
recent EU sanctions taken against Austria following the entry of the
far-right Freedom Party into power. It commented: "If there is a
logic in (that) decision... one can imagine what sanctions could be
taken against Israel if Ariel Sharon became the new prime minister."

Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Pique warned that "whoever won the
election..., Israeli public opinion, the future government and the
next prime minister must realise that the international community has
given its support to the peace process as it stands at the moment."
The Spanish daily, El Mundo, commented: "Only pressure from the
United States and the EU could force (Sharon) to give up his
intransigence." In Britain, the centre-left daily, The Guardian,
identified Sharon as "a figure of the very far right: a man whose
political life has been conducted so far out of the mainstream that
it is hard to think of a sensible analogy - imagine Pat Buchanan
going to the White House, or the Rev Ian Paisley, perhaps, on the
steps of No. 10."

Middle East crisis fuels rise in attacks on Jews
Weekend News Today
Lead: Leo
Source: Independent News

Fri Feb 2,2001 -- Anti-semitic attacks in Britain doubled last year
as an escalation in the Middle East conflict fuelled discrimination
against Jewish communities. More than 400 attacks, including two
stabbings and more than 50 assaults, were reported in what Jewish
leaders described as a "clearly worrying" pattern. Three out of every
10 anti-Semitic attacks in Britain were reported in the Cheetham Hill
district of Manchester, which has a small community of Orthodox Jews.
Mike Whine, of the London-based Community Security Trust, said many
of the attacks were the result of a spill-over of tensions in the
Middle East. He said that "certain Middle East interests" were
attempting to "transform the territorial conflict" between Israel and
Palestine into a global "religious conflict".

Fri Feb 2,2001 -- Your laptop is missing -- and with it, all your
confidential data. Qualcomm Chairman Irwin Jacobs lived this
nightmare last year when his notebook was stolen. In June came a
scarier case: The elite Nuclear Emergency Search Team discovered that
two laptop hard drives full of nuclear secrets had been misplaced.
There is no foolproof way to protect your notebook data, but
biometric security technologies can make it safer. Unlike passwords,
biometric devices measure unique biological traits -- like
fingerprints, voice prints, or retinal images -- and compare them to
a stored profile. You can use the PC if, and only if, your biometric
data matches the profile of the rightful user.

Fingerprint recognition, the most developed of these technologies, is
now appearing in the corporate world. Both Acer and Compaq have
released new notebooks with built-in fingerprint scanners. The units
run on Windows 2000 Professional edition.

UN demands Israel end Lebanon border violation

Fri Feb 2,2001 -- The United Nations has asked Israel to remove a
border fence that is encroaching on Lebanese soil, a U.N. envoy said
on Friday. Staffan de Mistura, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan's
personal representative for southern Lebanon, told reporters the
fence, on the outskirts of the divided town of Ghajar, had sectioned
off a 400 metre (yard) deep plot of Lebanese soil. De Mistura and
troops from the U.N. Force in South Lebanon (UNIFIL) flew over Ghajar
on Thursday and saw the violation. The United Nations' blue line
halves the town, on the edge of the Golan Heights which Israel seized
from Syria in a 1967 war.

Israeli army to encircle all Palestinian cities in West Bank except
Qalqilya and Jericho

Fri Feb 2,2001 -- The Israeli army said on Friday it was tightening
restrictions on movement in the West Bank by further limiting access
to Palestinian-ruled cities as a security measure. It announced the
move four days before an Israeli prime ministerial election and the
day after two Israelis were killed in separate incidents in the West
Bank. "Because of the escalation in the security situation in the
territories, the Israeli army will begin, starting today, to encircle
all of the Palestinian cities in the West Bank except for the cities
of Qalqilya and Jericho," the army said in a statement.

Of mice and pain: study of a higher order

By RICK WEISS
WASHINGTON
Tuesday 30 January 2001

It hurts to be smart. That's one conclusion from the latest study of
so-called Doogie mice - "smart" rodents that are genetically
engineered to have enhanced memory and learning skills.

Along with those extra IQ points, researchers have found, comes
an added sensitivity to pain.

The new work offers a sobering lesson about the difficulty of
enhancing certain brain functions without simultaneously taking a
toll on others. It might temper any momentum to engineering
genetic enhancements into people.

Doogie mice, named after the main character in the television show
Doogie Howser, MD, made a big splash when they were introduced
to the world in September 1999.

Having been endowed with extra copies of a gene involved in
memory formation, the animals outperformed their normal
counterparts on a variety of tasks.

Iran stepping up assistance to Palestinian terror groups
By Gideon Alon Ha'aretz Knesset Correspondent

Iran has recently increased the assistance it gives Palestinian terrorist
organizations operating in the territories, the director of Military Intelligence
told the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee yesterday.

This aid, which is sent via Hezbollah, consists of both training and funding,
said Major General Amos Malka.

Iran is also continuing to support Hezbollah and has recently sent the
Lebanese organization weapons that include long-range Katyusha missiles
capable of reaching deep inside Israel, Malka said. In addition, Hezbollah is
developing its capability for independent terrorist attacks within Israel, he
said.

Malka said there is a consensus regarding the necessity of destroying Israel
among all of Iran's political factions. Iran opposes negotiations between Israel
and the Palestinians, he noted, and had urged the start of a new Intifada
even before the current one actually broke out in September.

Iran is investing huge efforts in mending its fences with the Arab world, Malka
added, but is also continuing to develop its nonconventional weapons
capacity.

With regard to Iraq, Malka noted that Baghdad has been sending a few
thousand dollars to the family of every Palestinian killed or wounded during
the current violence. The money is transferred via an organization called the
Arab Liberation Front.

Iraq has been calling for a jihad, both military and nonmilitary, against Israel,
and it routinely denounces Arab states that it thinks are not doing enough on
this issue, he added.

Since the UN weapons inspectors left Iraq, Baghdad has been upgrading its
strategic capability, Malka said.

Malka said little about the Palestinians, apparently out of reluctance to
influence public opinion so close to the elections. His only comment on this
issue was that Palestinian positions did not move during the recent Taba
talks: They are still demanding all of the West Bank, Palestinian sovereignty
in East Jerusalem except for the Western Wall and the Jewish Quarter of the
Old City, and a "right of return" to Israel for the refugees.

DAMASCUS AWAITS THE POPE
Trip to Syria Could Help the Region

DAMASCUS, Syria, JAN. 30, 2001 (ZENIT.org).- The town long
associated with the conversion of Paul of Tarsus is awaiting
another historic moment: a visit by John Paul II.

The Pope himself last Thursday confirmed his visit to Syria, at the
ecumenical ceremony for the closing of the Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity.

Father Paolo Dall'Oglio, who lives in the Deir Mar Musa Monastery,
discussed preparations for the papal visit. His monastic and
ecumenical community, nestled in a deep canyon in the desert
north of the capital, is involved by vocation in dialogue with Islam.

"All Christians of the Middle East are a minority in the society they
hope to build, based on common values, but also recognizing the
worth of the spiritual, religious and symbolic force that Islam
represents for the majority of the people," Father Dall'Oglio said.
"We have a great human liking for our neighbors and for their
symbolic and spiritual world."

The Christian Churches in Syria, where the constitution guarantees
freedom of worship, have between 1 million and 1.5 million
members, or 10% to 15% of the population. Damascus is the See
of the Syrian-Orthodox, Melkite and Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate,
but all Oriental Churches are present in the country except the
Copts.

There is a small presence of the Latin Church and a very small
number of Protestants in this land, where the two most numerous
communities are the Greek and Armenian Orthodox. Because of
this, John Paul II said, he is following in the footsteps of the
Apostle to the Gentiles in order to promote unity among Christians.

The Pope's trip to visit the places of faith, planned during the
Jubilee, now takes place at a moment when Israeli-Palestinian
tension is destabilizing the area. The papal visit will be a good test
for the son and successor of Hafez Assad, the one-time strongman
of the Middle East, as well as an opportunity for international
recognition.

"Damascus is the symbol of very ancient cultural integration, a
mediator between cultures of the East and ancient West,"
Frederick Mario Fales explained. Fales is professor of the Ancient
Near East at the University of Turin. He is also director, in Syria, of
the archaeological excavations at Qatna, and author of Syria's
latest archaeological guide.

What is the Christian community of Damascus expecting from the
papal visit?

"There must be freedom from the concept of conflict between the
Western and Islamic civilizations," Fales said. "Even if there are
historical and sociological reasons, this conflict must not be
accepted from the political and cultural point of view. Islam and the
Western world are two complex realities; harmony must be sought
between them. The Pope is a great symbol of practical harmony,
which frees us from moving toward irreversible conflicts."

The Vatican is expected to announce the dates of the pontifical
pilgrimage within the next few weeks.

Shooting at Comets

Does something out there have our name on it?
YOWUSA.COM, January 31, 2001 Jacco van der Worp

The idea of fragments of comet 76P heading our way after colliding
with Mars or with one of the moons of Mars or even one of the
moons themselves heading this way have been explored more than
once since then. Something is surely up, but what? Since then,
interesting new facts have come out into the open. In this article,
we present an overview and a few conclusions that may arise from
it.

A little more than one year ago, in October 1999, The Millennium
Group web site featured an article called Convergence and Destiny,
written by Marshall Masters. In there the idea was presented that
an impact event is threatening our planet, in fact it might even be
on the way here as you read this.
