Subject: [bprlist] Joseph to Moses
There is much debate on the dating of events in the OT prior to about
1000 BC. See Curt Sewell's summary on this:
http://ldolphin.org/sewell/
Does the 400/430 year count of Israel's time in Egypt being with
Genesis 15 or with the actual arrival of Jacob and family some years
later? These are the two positions that many evangelicals are divided
over.
The conservative, traditional date of the Exodus is usually taken to
be about 1440 BC. Liberal scholars prefer 1280 BC. I am inclined
towards a date nearer to 1500 BC.
I have Barry Setterfield's and Alan Montgomery's proposed
chronologies on my web site which may be of interest to you.

Hello RR
The period is from Abram's arrival in Canaan to Moses exodus. You will find that the genealogy from Joseph to Moses is too short to fill 430 years.

Bush pledges active American role in Mideast peace
The Associated Press
WASHINGTON - President George W. Bush insisted Monday that he will
take an active role in the Arab-Israeli peace process. "We're very engaged =
in
the Middle East and we'll remain so," Bush declared in a White House
meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
With new fighting breaking out in Gaza on Monday, Mubarak was seeking to
nudge the United States into deeper involvement in the process, following
signals from the Bush administration that it will pull back from President=
Clinton's personal mediation efforts.
"I understand that we can facilitate peace. We can't force a peace," Bush
told reporters. "We will use our prestige and influence as best we can to
facilitate a peace." He sought to remain evenhanded, saying: "We'll work
together to try to convince all parties involved to lay down their arms." =
The Egyptian president sounded a supportive note, saying his country would=
be a partner in the peace process. "All of us need stability in the area,"=
Mubarak said, adding that he was committed to work for peace.
Questioned on whether his administration would withdraw from an aggressive=
role in brokering peace, Bush said Secretary of State Colin Powell had call=
ed
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon early Monday.
Mubarak urged the United States not to step back from its peace-brokering
role. "The U.S. cannot just take its hands off," Mubarak said in an intervi=
ew
published Sunday in The Washington Post. "It has to work to narrow the gap=
[between the Palestinians] and the Israelis."
Mubarak said the new Bush administration may not have a picture of what is=
going on. "I'm going to tell them what I feel," he said. "Usually I have go=
od
trips to the United States. Sometimes, we fight. But it's good fighting -
without blood."
Egypt's foreign minister, Amr Moussa, contended Friday that Sharon has
shown no sign of willingness to compromise. "What we need from the U.S.
has always been the honest broker," Moussa said. "The situation has never
been worse, and it could even deteriorate further, which we don't want to
see," he said.
Bush has said he is looking to Egypt and Jordan for help in defusing the
tensions. At a news conference Thursday, he noted he will meet with
Jordan's King Abdullah II, another moderate, on April 12.

BUSH IS BRANDED A MASS MURDERER
President Bush was condemned as a mass murderer by a Liberal
Democrat (LD) MP yesterday in an attack on his decision to reject the
Kyoto climate change treaty. Malcolm Bruce, one of the party's most
senior MPs, accused Mr Bush of being worse than "many dictators"
because of the number of executions he authorised while he was governor
of Texas. Mr Bruce said of President Bush: "Not content is he with killing
Texas prisoners by lethal injection, he now wants to kill thousands or
millions around the world by lethal pollution." (The London Telegraph)

Ha'aretz: (IMRA): Labor MK Katz defies security by joining Arafat for
lunch - Other MKs back out of Ramallah trip, fearing for their own safety
By Gideon Alon Ha'aretz Knesset Correspondent Ha'aretz 3 April 2001
[IMRA: Labor MK Katz told Israel Radio this morning that he offered Arafat
to negotiate with him. Katz has no standing to represent Israel in
negotiations. National Union MK Bennie Elon told Israel Radio that applied
this morning to the Knesset for Katz to be stripped of his Knesset immunity
so that he can be charged with violating the ban on the entrance into areas
under PA control. Elon warned that Kat's actions confuse the public,
leading them to beleive that it may be safe for Israelis to enter PA
controlled areas. Katz replied that while it is not safe for regualr
Israelis he was under no danger since he was escorted by Jibril Rajoub.]
A delegation of MKs invited to lunch yesterday with Palestinian Authority
Chairman Yasser Arafat was scuttled by the security establishment, which
argued that it could not guarantee the safety of the lawmakers.
Nevertheless, Labor MK Yossi Katz, the head of the Knesset House Committee,
the members of which were invited to meet with the PA leader, went anyway,
getting a personal escort from PA Preventive Security Chief Jibril Rajoub
and spending more than an hour with Arafat over lunch. At least half a dozen
MKs were slated to participate in the meeting, but all except Katz dropped
out.
"I felt is was my duty to go to the meeting, to see what I could do to help
bring an end to the violence," Katz said on returning to Israel. "Canceling
the meeting would only have harmed Arafat," he added.
According to Katz, Arafat and the speaker of the PA parliament, Abu Ala, who
also attended the lunch, said that they remained committed to the peace
process. They also spoke about the economic difficulties faced by the
Palestinians under the Israeli closure policy, Katz said.

Ha'aretz: Immigration down by 17 percent in 2000
By Moti Bassok Ha'aretz 3 April 2001
Some 60,000 immigrants arrived in Israel in 2000, a 17 percent drop from
1999, according to the central Bureau of Statistics. Although the former
Soviet Union remains the main source of immigrants to Israel, the 2000
figures showed a 40 percent drop from the previous year. Some 20 percent of
the 2000 immigrants were children up to the age of 14, and some 9.4 percent
were over the age of 65. According to the CBS, the least popular region for
settlement by Russian immigrants is Jerusalem, with only 8 percent going to
the capital, while 15 percent, a plurality, choose Haifa as their home. Some
30 percent of western immigrants choose Jerusalem.

Fahd Al-Fanek, a senior analyst for the official Jordanian daily Al-Ray ,
attacked the Palestinian Authority yesterday for missing a historic
opportunity to make peace with Israel. In his regular column, Fanek noted,
It is crystal clear that the Palestinian side erred when it missed a rare
opportunity not likely to be repea ted. There is no greater proof than its
futile request now to return to the negotiating table based on the point
reached in the Camp David and Taba talks, which they rejected in the past
and now want back again.

Ha'aretz: Late period Western Wall stones removed for repair
By Itim Ha'aretz 3 April 2001
Worshipers arriving at Jerusalems Western Wall yesterday were surprised to
see a giant crane taking up a large part of the plaza in front of the site.
Experts, perched at the top of the crane, were examining the top line of
stones, some of which have fa llen down, posing a danger to people praying
below. Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, chief rabbi at the wall and a panel of chief
rabbis decided that the stones must be examined forthwith. A number of
stones, not part of the original structure, were removed from the top of the
wall yesterday, as was one of the original stones. Rabbi Rabinowitz said
that the stone would be examined and returned to its proper place after
Passover.

Meretz MK Amnon Rubinstein: Let us assume that Israel never existed (World
Jewry needs Israel)
Ha'aretz 3 April 2001
...
Many Israelis have developed a very pessimistic outlook, according to which
the lives of Jews are in danger only in Israel, whereas Diaspora Jewish
communities are thriving. The proponents of this outlook argue that Jews
live securely in both the West and the East, whereas, in their own homeland,
they are sitting ducks for murderous terrorists. The conclusion that these
people draw could have far-reaching implications.
The truth is that the Diaspora today should be compared with a hypothetical
situation in which (the very thought is frightening) Israel does not exist
as a Jewish state. To understand Israel's importance, imagine what things
would be like if the millions of Jews who have immigrated to Israel had been
forced to remain in their countries of origin: The hundreds of thousands of
Polish Jews after the Second World War, another million Jews in the former
Soviet Union, and - worst of all - the millions of Jews who would have
remained in Arab and Muslim countries in a period of ever-increasing Muslim
fanaticism, which has led to genocide in Sudan, to the murder of Christians
in Indonesia, to the extreme distress currently suffered by the Coptic
community and the remnants of other Christian communities in Egypt, and so
forth.
The Jews of the Diaspora can lead secure lives because the countries where
Jews would be in jeopardy have few, if any, Jews in their midst - because
most of the Jews live here, in Israel.
Even those who are familiar with Western Diaspora communities know that,
despite their state of tranquillity and prosperity, the members of those
communities always harbor the fear that the ancient spectre of anti-Semitism
could come to life once more. This is the only explanation for the silence
of American Jewry in the face of the ongoing injustice to Jonathan Pollard
and this is the only explanation for the deep concern that is expressed from
time to time for the fate of the Jewish state even by Jews living in the
very heart of a tolerant Western culture.
Jewish journalist Barbara Amiel, the wife of Conrad Black, publisher of The
Daily Telegraph and The Jerusalem Post, expressed such anxiety recently. In
an article entitled "Without Israel, Judaism is pointless," (Jerusalem Post,
Feb. 23), she writes: "While organized anti-Semitism has been eliminated in
the world today, the situation of the Jews hasn't fundamentally changed.
Notwithstanding the moderating forces of liberalism and the fact that we can
live peacefully anywhere, the same forces that turned Germany into Nazi
Germany still exist. Any people such as the Jews, who do not have a country
of their own, may forever be at the mercy of any virus that takes hold. We
might live peacefully for the next five generations without Israel. After
all, about five generations of Jews managed quite well from the time of the
Hapsburg Joseph II until the end of the Weimar Republic ..."
She ends her article with a statement that should reverberate in any place
where the subject of Israel is discussed: "The Israelis will make their
decision whether to carry on the draining struggle for a Jewish state, but
all Jews, even the anti-Israel Jewish journalists in the West, may yet bear
the consequences of that decision.

VMI seeks grace for traditional prayers
"Religious activities sponsored or directed by the school are
unconstitutional and should be stopped immediately," an ACLU lawyer said.
By MATT CHITTUM <mailto:mattc@roanoke.com>
<http://theroanoketimes.com> The Roanoke Times
<http://www.theroanoketimes.com>
First, the Virginia Military Institute was forced to admit women.
Then, it was subjected to the microscopic gaze of the U.S. Department of
Justice and the constant sniff tests of its own lawyers.
It's enough to make even a wandering member of the flock pray for relief, but
the American Civil Liberties Unions says they'd better keep those prayers
under their breath.
After a dozen years under siege over gender issues, VMI has a new old rite
to defend: its dinner blessing.
Based on complaints from two cadets, the ACLU is asking VMI to halt its
traditional evening prayers. Actual litigation is "a good possibility," said
Rebecca Glenberg, legal counsel for the Virginia ACLU.
If the case makes it as far as the U.S. Supreme Court, it will be the first time
the justices have considered the constitutionality of prayer in a public college
setting. All of their previous rulings on school prayer have related to public
elementary and secondary schools.
"Religious activities sponsored or directed by the school are unconstitutional
and should be stopped immediately," Glenberg wrote in a Feb. 28 letter to
VMI Superintendent Josiah Bunting III. "There is no reason to believe that
the prohibition on school sponsored prayer would be any different in the
college setting."
But the dinner prayers have continued at VMI, and state and college officials
vow to defend the tradition.
"The Supreme Court has never said adults assembled for an official meal on
a college campus may not hear a blessing offered for the meal," said
Attorney General Mark Earley , whose office is legal counsel for VMI .
"The Constitution does not prohibit our saying grace before supper," Bunting
said in a Monday letter to Glenberg. "And we shall continue to do so."
The prayer in question has been said before the most formal meal served in
VMI 's mess hall since at least the 1950s. Cadets must stand and a "cadet
chaplain" recites what VMI officials call a "non-sectarian" prayer that invokes
God, but not Jesus Christ.
Cadets are not required to bow their heads or fold their hands.
"It's very clear that the existence of the prayers conveys a message of
endorsement by the school, which is a government agency," Glenberg said
Monday.
The cadets are "coerced" into accepting religion as part of a "captive
audience," she said in her letter, because "the only alternative to going to the
mess hall for dinner is going hungry."
But VMI officials say that isn't necessarily the case.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors are not required eat dinner in the mess
hall. Only freshman, during the six months of the "ratline" training period, are
required to eat there.
Nevertheless, the blessing struck juniors Neil Mellen, 21 of Los Angeles, and
Paul Knick, 20, of Woodbridge, as offensive.
Though Mellen was raised as a Catholic and Knick is a churchgoing
Lutheran, they believe religion should be a personal matter with no
institutional interference.
"If VMI claims to produce honorable citizen-soldiers it seems only
reasonable that those future leaders of America should live by the
Constitution," Mellen wrote in an editorial to The Cadet, a student
newspaper. The mess hall prayer "promotes religion over non religion and
fosters an environment in which non-participants can feel like or be treated
as outsiders."
The pair requested that all cadets be permitted to abstain from religious
activities, including mess hall prayers. But the administration denied their
requests.
"It became painfully clear to us that the only way to effect such a change
would be with the help of an outside organization," Mellen said Monday.
They found support among some cadets.
Junior Salmaan Khawaja, a Muslim, told The Cadet it's "blasphemy [for me]
to pray to Jesus." Junior Sopheap Chan, a Buddhist, told the paper he had
no problem with the prayer until permission to abstain from it was refused.
That showed him the administration "didn't respect my faith."
At least one cadet disagrees. Those who don't want to pray should stand out
of respect for the others, said Cadet Chaplain Elijah Ward of Greenville , a
senior whose father is a Church of Christ minister.
"Rather than have whooping and hollering and chicken bones flying, that's
the best way to handle it," he said.
"Of course ... you don't have to go to school there," said Jay Sekulow, chief
counsel for American Center for Law and Justice, a Virginia Beach-based
public interest law firm started by religious broadcaster Pat Robertson. The
ACLJ often opposes the ACLU in school-prayer litigation.
"If this is part of the school's tradition, the school ought to be given pretty
broad parameters," Sekulow said.
He conceded if cadets are required to be there, the prayer "will be hard to
defend."
But Earley is prepared for litigation.
"If the ACLU insists on taking VMI to court, we will vigorously defend the
Institute and the tradition of saying grace before supper."
"I hope it won't come to court," said Knick. "But I also won't back down."

Subject: [bprlist] Gorbachev gathers pals for a new world order
Gorbachev gathers pals for a new world order
By Desmond O'Grady in Saint Vincent, Italy
http://www.smh.com.au/news/0104/03/world/world5.html
Mikhail Gorbachev wants Malcolm Fraser to help him save the world.
When the former Soviet leader decided to set up a World Governance
Forum, the former Australian prime minister was among the politicians
he invited to join him.
A Gorbachev aide said there had been a positive response by telephone
from Mr Fraser, but he had been unable to attend the forum's
inaugural meeting in the Italian alpine resort of St Vincent last
week.
Mr Gorbachev told the meeting that after World War I the League of
Nations had been established, after World War II the United Nations,
and, after the end of the Cold War, new structures were needed to
govern globalisation.
The protests of the "people of Seattle" confirmed his analysis, he
said.
Mr Gorbachev said his forum would be a political version of the
annual World Economic Forum in Davos, which is confined mainly to
businessmen and economists.
Those present included the former Polish leader General Wojciech
Jaruzelski and the former Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti.
"We're not returned [political] soldiers," Mr Andreotti said, "but
experienced politicians who realise existing international
institutions cannot handle new problems."
Representatives of the Italian and European parliaments attended, and
Mr Gorbachev announced support from figures such as Jacques Delors,
the former European Union commissioner, Mario Soares, the former
Portuguese president, and George Bush snr, the former US president.
The former US presidential candidate George McGovern, who is the US
ambassador to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation, described the
forum as an "enormously important step forward in the history of the
world", and Mr Gorbachev as one of the four greatest 20th-century
politicians along with Mahatma Gandhi, Sun Yat-sen and Franklin
Roosevelt.

Subject: [bprlist] 'Yeti's hair' defies DNA analysis
MONDAY APRIL 02 2001
'Yeti's hair' defies DNA analysis
BY MARK HENDERSON, SCIENCE CORRESPONDENT
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/0,,2-108351,00.html
BRITISH scientists on the trail of the Yeti have found some of the
best evidence yet for the existence of the mythical Himalayan
creature =97 a sample of hair that has proved impossible to identify.
Genetic tests on the hair, which was gathered from a tree in Bhutan,
have failed to match its DNA to that of another animal. The findings,
which have surprised sceptical researchers, raise the strong
possibility that the sample belongs to an as yet undiscovered
species.
In Bhutan, an expedition team was led by an "official Yeti-hunter" to
a forest in the eastern part of the country, where he was convinced
that an animal was at large. "He told us that he had found evidence
of the Yeti in the hollow of a cedar tree," Rob McCall, a zoologist
who was part of the expedition, said. Dr McCall's team removed
strands of hair from the tree and returned to Britain to have them
analysed.
Bryan Sykes, Professor of Human Genetics at the Oxford Institute of
Molecular Medicine, one of the world's leading experts on DNA
analysis, who examined the hair, said: "We found some DNA in it, but
we don't know what it is. It's not a human, not a bear nor anything
else we have so far been able to identify. It's a mystery and I never
thought this would end in a mystery. We have never encountered DNA
that we couldn't recognise before."
The discovery was made by a team of scientists assembled by Channel 4
for a documentary in the To the Ends of the Earth series, which will
be shown tonight.

Subject: [bprlist] Fingerprint May Soon Be Needed to Buy Groceries
Fingerprint May Soon Be Needed to Buy Groceries
David M. Bresnahan
Saturday, March 31, 2001
http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2001/3/30/172528.shtml
The day will come when you put your finger on a scanning device to
prove who you are before you engage in transactions at retail stores,
ATMs, banks and even when you buy groceries. One company making such
a device is engaged in a pilot project with the nation's largest
grocery chain.
Biometric Access Corp. has teamed up with four Kroger stores in the
Houston area to test a point-of-sale finger-scanning device for
retail transactions. The pilot project has been under way for just
over a year and is working well, even though some customers don't
like it, according to Kroger spokesman Gary Huddleston.
The Kroger stores are using the device to provide positive
identification for payroll check cashing, not for actual sales.
Huddleston says customer acceptance is one of the challenges that
must be overcome if the device is to be used for all transactions.
"Many customers have seen the value of the security in the system.
The finger image is positive identification," Huddleston told
NewsMax.com in a phone interview. He said a personal identification
number was not very secure.
Will the finger-image scanner become common in all retail stores in
the future?
"I'm sure it will," said Huddleston. "Customer acceptance is one
challenge, and cost is the other challenge. As soon as we overcome
those."
Use of the finger image for check cashing at the four pilot Kroger
stores is optional, but Huddleston said most customers use it once
they understand how it works and that they can get their check cashed
faster if they submit to the finger-image scan
The finger-image scanner can easily be used for all point-of-sale
transactions, including the use of checks, credit cards and debit
cards, according to Biometric Access Corp. spokesman Hal Jennings.
The system is also used for computer security and for clocking
workers in and out of work, replacing old-fashioned time cards.
The use of finger-image scans is hailed by some and highly criticized
by others.
"My primary objection is to government surveillance of citizens, more
so than that of private businesses. However, the trend by retailers
and employers to use biometrics to screen customers and employees is
alarming," said activist Scott McDonald, who has a Web site
(www.networkusa.org/fingerprint.shtml) that fights the use of
fingerprints.
Conditioning the Public
He says the use of finger-image scans by retail stores is one way the
government can "condition" the public to "accept the same kind of
perpetual scrutiny by government using the same technologies."
McDonald told NewsMax.com that he was concerned about an increase in
the number of government and business partnerships.
"It is likely the information generated by private biometric scanning
by banks, businesses and employers will eventually be linked to, or
accessible by, government computers," explained McDonald.
Biometric Access Corp. has also established a contract with H.E. Butt
Grocery Co. in Texas "which will result in a large-scale
implementation of the SecureTouch On-Time(tm) time and attendance
system," Jennings said.
More than 700 units will be installed in stores using biometric
fingerprint readers to keep track of 50,000 employees as they clock
in and out of work.
Biometric Access Corp. also sold 6,000 similar readers to the state
of New York for the Office of Mental Health to be used to protect
highly confidential files.

And do not be still, O God!

Shalom to you all,

2. DAVID DOLAN REPORT FROM JERUSALEM
Jerry Golden "REPORT"
P.O. Box 591
Bet Shemesh 99100 Israel
http://thegoldenreport.com
4-3-01
Another night of all out war in Bethlehem, Gaza and Ramallah with
Tanks, Machine-guns and Missiles. If you were an IDF Soldier and you
heard someone say, when will the war begin? You=92d wonder where they
have been. If you drove by some of the buildings I have in the past
few weeks you may think you were in Beirut Lebanon.
Today the Palestinians murdered another baby (15 months), and her
mother wounded in a Jewish Settlement. Two IDF Soldiers were killed
one in Gaza and one in Bethlehem. Hundreds were wounded in all night
gun battles.
Today Settlers from Samaria were protesting in front of the Prime
Ministers Office, demanding that the IDF take more aggressive action.
They have begun asking questions like why should we always wait until
they kill us and then retaliate. It seems we must wait until they hit
first, before we can do anything. After so many times of being hit
you=92d think we=92d stop them from hitting us. Israelis are now dying
every day because of the Barak policy. Sharon said he=92d change things,
well all we can say here in Israel is DO IT NOW. Untie the hands of
the IDF and the IAF and allow them to stop these Islamic murderers.
Better all out war than for them to keep killing a few of us each day.
The IDF are waiting for a change of policy, Barak made a policy that
no IDF Soldier could fire first. The Tanzim and Force 17 actually
march in front of the IDF with guns in their hands even at times
pointing them at the IDF Soldiers. But they must wait until fired upon
before shooting their weapons. That may sound OK to Kofi Annan but if
he was an IDF Soldier I think he=92d change that real quickly. And I can
tell you us parents of IDF Soldiers want it changed and now.
I travel around Israel nearly weekly in ministry, and talk to many
Israelis. I seldom find one who does not think it necessary to teach
the Palestinians a lesson that they can not treat us like this and get
away with it. Regardless of how CNN has the world believing, we know
the truth and we should act on it.
We talked to Joel yesterday on the phone, he is dong ok, but this war
in Hebron and being under fire 24 hours daily is taking its toll.
Please remember to pray for him and his buddies. Pray for the peace of
Jerusalem, and for this ministry. Pray for our finances, we are facing
very heavy financial bills in the next two months, it=92s rent time, and
our car is and computer has about had it.
Shalom, Jerry Golden

Another funeral is taking place today for an Israeli soldier killed in
fierce fighting with Palestinian forces. Danny Durai, 19, was shot in
the chest during a Palestinian attack on Rachel's Tomb on Monday. He
is being buried this afternoon in his hometown of Arad, east of
Beersheva. His death brings to al least 74 the number of Israelis
killed during the half-year violent Palestinian uprising. Israeli
forces responded to the attack by firing tank shells and helicopter
missiles at Palestinian shooting positions in and around Bethlehem,
reportedly injuring several Palestinian fighters. The sounds of the
intense battle, which continued on and off for over half a day,
reverberated throughout nearby Jerusalem. Among buildings struck in
the counteroffensive was the empty Paradise hotel, which has become a
staging ground for periodic armed assaults upon nearby Rachel's Tomb,
located on the northern edge of Bethlehem.
Palestinian forces attacked Israeli positions along the Gaza Strip
border with Egypt today. No Israeli casualties were immediately
reported. Palestinians fired mortar shells and hurled firebombs and
hand grenades overnight at several other Israeli positions in the Gaza
Strip. Palestinian media reports say Israeli tank fire was returned in
one of the incidents. Tension remains high in the area following the
Israeli helicopter rocketing of a pickup truck on Monday carrying a
wanted Islamic Jihad terrorist leader. Israeli officials said the
Palestinian, who was instantly killed, had masterminded the heinous
Beit Lid terror attack in 1995 that left 21 Israeli soldiers dead.
They added that Israeli intelligence agents had obtained evidence that
he was planning another major terror attack. They also said he had
been involved in recent assaults upon two Jewish communities in the
Gaza Strip.
It was the first targeted Israeli attack on a terrorist leader since
Ariel Sharon took office almost one month ago. "What happened today
is part of an Israeli plan to terrorize our people," said Palestinian
Authority Gaza security chief Muhammad Dahlan. Visiting Sweden,
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres defended the attack: "This man was on
his way to carry out an act of terror, and we have a right to defend
ourselves." An Islamic Jihad leader told Hizbullah television today
that a string of revenge attacks will be launched soon, "beginning in
Gaza and ending up in Tel Aviv and Netanya." Meanwhile Israel has
released three of the seven Palestinian security agents seized just
inside PA-controlled territory north of Jerusalem on Saturday night.
Officials said there was no hard evidence that the three had
participated in recent attacks on Israelis in the area. The PA has
demanded that all seven be immediately set free.
After news reached Washington of the heavy Bethlehem fighting and the
Gaza Strip rocketing, US Secretary of State Colin Powell phoned Sharon
to ask about the upsurge of violence. He reached the PM at his Negev
Desert ranch, where he was recovering from a bout of the flu. A
Sharon aid said the Israeli leader explained that he would keep his
election pledge to end terror attacks upon Israeli civilians "whatever
it takes to do so." He also told Powell that he is continuing efforts
to ease economic restrictions placed on Arafat's autonomy zones.
Meanwhile Labor party Knesset member Yossi Katz met in Ramallah with
Arafat on Monday, saying afterwards that he had received a commitment
from the Palestinian leader "to stop the violence and reopen channels
of dialogue with Israel." Although Katz is close to FM Peres, his
visit took place without Israeli government approval. Indeed, other
Knesset members demanded that Katz be prosecuted for visiting Ramallah,
which has been declared off-limits to Israelis since two reserve
soldiers were lynched there last October. Katz said he presented a
proposal for a 15 day ceasefire, during which efforts would be made to
re-launch peace negotiations. Israeli officials said they had no
knowledge of the plan. Meanwhile, PA leaders announced the opening
of an "official embassy" in Baghdad. Iraqi officials attending the
ceremony reportedly pledged "full support for the holy Palestinian
struggle to liberate Jerusalem from Zionist occupation."
With tourism down by over 40% since the start of the violent uprising,
immigration numbers are also falling according to statistics released
on Monday. The government reported that around 60,000 new immigrants
arrived during the year 2,000, a drop of some 22% from 1999. Officials
said the number of arrivals declined noticeably in the last quarter of
the year, coinciding with the new wave of violence. They said early
indications are that the downward trend is continuing this year.
Despite the drop, the government report said over 1,000,000 people
had immigrated from the former Soviet Union since 1990, comprising
some 36% of the nearly 3,000,000 immigrants currently living in the
modern state of Israel.

ASTRONOMERS SPOT MOST DISTANT SUPERNOVA
-------------------------
Using the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered a
supernova that exploded 10 billion years ago - the most distant
every discovered. The discovery of supernova 1997ff also helps to
reinforce the theory that the Universe's expansion is actually
speeding up. Analysis of light from the supernova confirms that
expansion of the early Universe first slowed, and then accelerated
as the repulsive force of "dark energy" overcame the effects of
gravity.

NASA PREPARES FOR THE NEXT ROBOT PROBE TO MARS
-------------------------
After two failed missions in the last 18 months, NASA is just about
ready to try its luck again with the Red Planet. The new orbiter,
Mars Odyssey, is currently on the pad at Cape Canaveral, and if all
goes well, it will launch Friday on board a Delta 2 rocket, on
track to reach Mars in October, and begin scientific observation of
the planet in January 2002. Once in orbit, the spacecraft determine
what chemical elements and minerals make up the Martian surface and
whether any shallow buried ice exists.

MARTIAN MICROPHONE WILL FLY AGAIN
-------------------------
When the Mars Polar Lander went missing in 1999, the Planetary
Society's Martian microphone - designed to hear what it sounds like
on Mars - went missing too. Fortunately, the Society has found
another ride to Mars, this time on board a French spacecraft, which
is scheduled for launch in 2007. The microphone was designed by the
University of California, Berkeley, and should pick up any sounds
on Mars, including wind, shifting sand, and the machinery of the
spacecraft itself.

Subject: [bprlist] Whole World Watching China-U.S. Plane Standoff
Tuesday April 3 11:10 AM ET
Whole World Watching China-U.S. Plane Standoff
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - The world watched with growing interest on
Tuesday a standoff between Beijing and Washington over a U.S. spy plane
and its crew seized by China.
Asian nations in particular were paying close attention to the saga -- which
began on Sunday when a U.S. EP-3 surveillance plane collided with a
Chinese F-8 fighter jet -- with most reluctant to take sides in the row.
``Very seldom do other countries get involved when the elephants are pitted
against each other,'' Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (news -
web sites) said of the incident, stressing Manila maintained a ``neutral''
stance over the affair.
Japan said good relations between the United States and China were vital for
the Asia-Pacific region and urged a speedy resolution.
The plane had taken off from Japan's Okinawa island -- where over 25,000
U.S. troops are based -- on a routine surveillance flight.
China says the U.S. plane veered into its fighter, while Washington
maintains it was the other way around. The Chinese plane crashed into the
sea -- the pilot is still missing -- while the U.S. plane made an emergency
landing on the Chinese island of Hainan.
China has since detained the crew -- who have not been allowed contact with
U.S. officials since landing -- and also poured over the contents of the top
secret plane in direct defiance of Washington's claim that the plane is as
much ''sovereign property'' as an embassy or consulate on foreign soil.
Taiwan urged both sides to deal with the issue ``peacefully and with
wisdom.''
An editorial in the English-language Taipei Times on Tuesday said Taiwan
would ``inevitably become the front-line state in any clash of these two
titans.''
Vietnam's foreign ministry said it was watching the issue ''with great
interest,'' while Russia said the collision was ``no surprise'' given the level of
aerial activity in the area.
United Nations (news - web sites) Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web
sites), currently visiting Kenya, said he was also closely monitoring the
affair.
``I hope that it will be settled peacefully,'' he told a news conference.
``I know the U.S. has asked for access to the 24 officers on the plane. I also
offer my condolences to the family of the Chinese air pilot and my sympathy
to the pilot who is missing.''
European Union (news - web sites) security chief, NATO (news - web sites)
Secretary General Javier Solana urged China to observe international law in
dealing with the U.S. crew and the plane.
``International law must (always) be complied with,'' he said.
British newspapers gave widespread coverage to the incident with the
Guardian saying in an editorial that the affair demonstrates ``just how easily
George Bush's concept of 'strategic competition' with China can turn nasty.''
``...it contributes to a growing sense in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond
that post-Clinton bilateral ties are fraying,'' it said.
The Times said Beijing would be wise to avoid a fight. ``The bigger the storm
in China over this accident, the better Taiwan is likely to be (militarily)
equipped by Washington,'' it said.
``A quarrel over this incident is best not picked.''

Subject: [bprlist] Israeli Army, Palestinians Warn of Escalation
Tuesday April 3 9:58 AM ET
Israeli Army, Palestinians Warn of Escalation
By Deborah Camiel
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - An Israeli commander in the West Bank said on
Tuesday
his troops would shoot to kill armed foes, while Palestinians vowed to use
``every means'' needed to defend themselves in their escalating conflict.
Both sides took tough positions after a week of worsening violence, during
which Israeli helicopters launched air strikes following a wave of
Palestinian bombings and the killing of a 10-month-old Jewish baby.
Hours of fighting ended in the West Bank town of Bethlehem early on
Tuesday
after a fierce battle that followed the death of a soldier. At least six
Palestinians were hurt.
Colonel Marcel Aviv, army chief at the heavily defended Rachel's Tomb in
Bethlehem, said Palestinian sniper fire in the last three days had brought
the fighting to a new level.
``In the area of Rachel's Tomb there has been gunfire almost every day for
three days, and the result is of course escalation,'' Aviv told Army Radio.
He said Palestinians were shooting at the outpost from various directions
and
added: ``Our activity has to be, and is, that when we spot armed (men) we
will be the ones to open fire, in an accurate and lethal way, with all our
means.''
Mohammed Dahlan, the Palestinian preventive security chief in the Gaza
Strip,
said some Palestinians were so frustrated he could not rule out more bomb
attacks.
``As far as the Palestinian people are concerned, death and life are the
same at this point. This is a very, very dangerous stage that any people can
be at and we have nothing to lose,'' Dahlan told reporters in the West Bank
city of Ramallah.
``We have the right to defend ourselves using every means that we
choose...This does not mean we will carry out operations in Tel Aviv or
attacks in Tel Aviv, but no one can fully control the feelings of a mass of
people who are angry and who have lost their control.''
Four-Year-Old Girl Hurt
A four-year-old girl was among the wounded in Bethlehem, where Israeli
tanks
pounded a hotel where the army said snipers were taking cover. A Jerusalem
eye hospital said the girl's eye was removed.
Each side blamed the other for the bloodshed.
A senior Palestinian security official told Reuters that Palestinian forces
had evacuated some of their positions in Bethlehem for fear of Israeli
bombing.
Elsewhere in the West Bank, Jewish settlers broke into a mosque near the
vegetable market in the heart of the divided city of Hebron and vandalized
it, throwing Korans on the floor and smashing windows, Palestinian
witnesses
said.
In Gaza, Palestinian police said the Israeli army bulldozed an outpost of the
Force-17 security group near the city of Khan Younis under cover of heavy
machinegun and tank fire early on Tuesday. They said no injuries had been
reported.
An Israeli spokesman said the army had removed an outpost which had
served
occasionally as a base for Palestinian gunmen to fire on army troops and
civilians in the nearby settlement of Ganei Tal with machineguns and
anti-tank grenades.
At least 367 Palestinians have been killed in the uprising, as well as 71
Israelis and 13 Israeli Arabs. The Palestinian death toll includes four
Islamic militant suicide bombers.
Helicopter Strikes
In Gaza on Monday, an Israeli helicopter killed Islamic Jihad militant
Mohammed Abdelal in a missile attack on his car which one Palestinian
official said was part of a policy of ''assassinations.''
Israeli security sources said Abdelal had been involved in several attacks
since 1994, including one at a soldiers' hitchhiking post in Israel in 1995
in which 22 people died.
A senior aide to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Palestinian leaders
should reassess their course of action.
``Violence is going to lead them nowhere. They're going to hit their head
today, with this government, against an iron wall,'' aide Raanan Gissin told
reporters.
Palestinians say Sharon is to blame for the increase of violence and Dahlan
said he feared Israel might try to take control of Palestinian areas.
Warning that Palestinians would not stand by and let this happen, Dahlan
said: ``Of course they are free to take their decision...but this will not be
without a price.''
The army said in a statement it had freed three members of Force-17 after an
investigation cleared them of suspicions of ''hostile terrorist activities.''
Three other Palestinians remained in custody.

Putting God on 'Hold' in a High-tech World
More than 80 million Americans own a cell phone or
pager, so the odds are pretty good that one or both will
find a way into worship. That's why one Mint Hill, N.C.,
pastor knew exactly what to say when a cell phone began
ringing from the front row while he was preaching. "If
that's for me," the pastor announced, "tell them I'm busy."
The sanctuary, it seems, is a sanctuary no more.
In one Florida church, a man took a call during
worship, talked awhile, hung up and then made two more
phone calls before the benediction.
When a cell phone went off one Sunday morning in a
prominent Charlotte, N.C., church, the pastor stopped the
sermon and began preaching about respect. Apparently the
notices in the church bulletin, and on the overhead screen
during worship, had been ignored. Now they are thinking
about putting up signs on the sanctuary doors.
However, it's not just pagers and cell phones. Several
preachers said they've heard the beep of a digital watch on
more than one Sunday morning - at precisely five minutes to
twelve! Time for "Amen."

Aaron Lerner Date: 2 April 2001
The Foreign Ministry has provided IMRA with the Hebrew version of the
following excerpt from the radio commentary of senior Voice of Palestine
commentator Youssef al-Kazaz, broadcast on the Palestinian Authority
flagship radio station, Voice of Palestine, on 2 April 2001 at 8:39 AM:
"On the matter of the baby settler who was killed in Hebron a few days ago,
we already said that her death was a fishy action and there is information
according to which this baby was retarded and it was her mother who killed
her in order to get rid of her."
Senior Voice of Palestine commentator Youssef al-Kazaz
Voice of Palestine, on 2 April 2001, 8:39 AM
Gideon Meir, deputy director-general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
division of public affairs commented that: "The things that were broadcast
on Voice of Palestine are testimony to just how low the Palestinians are
willing to go in order to win world public opinion. It would be bad enough
if they used false material in their propaganda but to stick Israel with
such a lie is such insolence and gall that it raises the contempt of any
human being."

Church of Scientology Sent to Trial in France
April 3, 2001 2:38 pm EST
PARIS (Reuters) - A French magistrate has ordered the Paris division of the
Church of Scientology to stand trial on charges of attempted extortion and
invasion of privacy, judicial sources said on Tuesday.
Investigating magistrate Renaud Van Ruymbeke also notified Marc Walter, a
leader
of Scientology in the Paris region, that he would face trial on the same
charges, in addition to false advertising.
However, Van Ruymbeke dropped charges against Martine Brochard, another
Scientologist.
The suit was filed by three former Scientologists who accused the church of
using their names and addresses on its listings after they had left the
movement.
Court documents said two of the three plaintiffs had been bombarded with
publicity material seeking money under false pretences.
Walter's lawyer Mourad Oussedik rejected the charges.
"There was never any false advertising or attempt at extortion. It's
manipulation," he told Reuters.
French authorities view the Church of Scientology with suspicion and do not
recognize it as a religion. Members have complained of harassment and
persecution.
A date for the trial was not immediately set.

gone on the rhetorical offensive against the United States. A caricature was
published (April 1, 2001) by the official daily of the Palestinian
Authority, "Al-hayat al-jadida". It is entitled "Teacher and Students".
President Bush and Secretary of State Powell are portrayed as students of
Prime Minister Sharon, who is conducting a class on how to murder Arab
children.
An article appearing two days earlier blames the United States for last week
's Israeli attack on Palestinian military targets. The attack followed the
killing of a 10-month-old Israeli child and two Israeli high school
students. The article describes anti-American demonstrations, including flag
burnings and public calls for attacks on U.S. interests by a Palestinian
official. The text of the article is follows:
"Following the Israeli attack there is a noticeable sense of rage in the
Palestinian street and condemnation of American assistance to the Zionist
military machine. More and more voices are calling for revenge against the
occupation and attacks on American interests in the Arab world. Enraged
masked men in Alminara Square burned a model of an Israeli bus, flags of the
occupier [Israel] and American flags.
Sakhar Habash, a member of the Central Commission the Fatah Movement [Arafat
's loyalists], spoke on behalf of the national and Islamic forces. Habash
said that "the Black House", meaning the White House, bears responsibility
for the killing, destruction and siege directed against our people. Habash
said that in response to the recent American veto at the United Nations [of
a proposal to send an armed observer force to Israel and the West Bank] as
well as the attempt to justify Israeli crimes, American interests in the
Arab homeland should be threatened..." [Al-hayat al-jadida 30/03/01]

Sharon bows to Palestinian demand for international presence at meeting
Aaron Lerner Date: 3 April 2001
Israel Radio senior diplomatic correspondent Yoni Ben Menachem reported on
the 11 PM news that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has agreed to having a
representative of the CIA present as observer at the meeting of the
Palestinian-Israeli supreme security committee that is to meet tomorrow.
Israel insisted until this evening that the meeting be only between Israelis
and the Palestinians while the Palestinians insisted on the involvement of a
third party for example an Egyptian.
The Prime Minister's Office claimed to Israel Radio that Israel had remained
firm on its position since the CIA representative would "only" be an
observer.
Ben Menachem noted that the basis for the meeting remains under dispute with
the Palestinians insisting that the basis for the meeting be the Taba
understandings (that includes Israeli redeployments of forces to their
position before hostilities) while Israel no longer recognizes the standing
of Taba as it was not approved by the Knesset.
Israel Radio also reported that the Prime Minister's Office insisted that
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres would only be discussing a cease fire when he
meets tomorrow with PA Minister of Planning and International Cooperation
Nabil Sha'ath. Israel Television Channel One diplomatic correspondent Karen
Neubach reported earlier that Peres would propose to the Palestinians a four
point program that he has discussed with European leaders that would call
for simultaneously ending the violence, incitement and renewing
negotiations. The plan would apparently not require the Palestinians to do
anything about its illegal weapons and forces as long as they do not shoot.

Subject: [bprlist] Faster 'Net growth rate raises fears about routers
Faster 'Net growth rate raises fears about routers
By CAROLYN DUFFY MARSAN Network World, 04/02/01
Alarm bells are ringing in the Internet engineering community over an
obscure statistic that indicates the 'Net is growing - in size and
complexity - at a faster rate than today's routers can handle.
This recent finding has prompted the Internet Engineering Task Force
(IETF) to embark on an overhaul of the communications protocol that
handles routing across the Internet's backbone.
At stake for large companies may be the need to buy more powerful
network gear earlier than originally intended.
"The sky is not falling, but the sky is hanging a little low," says
Fred Baker, a routing pioneer with Cisco and a member of the IETF's
Internet Architecture Board. "The issue needs to be addressed soon."
Forum: Internet routing and multihoming What do you think? Discuss
this article.
The statistic in question is the number of entries in the backbone's
routing table, the master list of network destinations that is stored
in backbone routers and used to determine the best path from one
network to another. The size and traffic in the routing table are
indicators of the overall health of the Internet, in particular how
well the individual networks that comprise the Internet are
communicating with each other.
After years of predictable growth, the size of the routing table and
traffic in it exploded during the past six months, topping 104,000
entries in March, compared with 75,000 a year ago. Even more troubling
is evidence that frequent updates to the routing table entries by
network managers are causing instability in the Internet's backbone
routing infrastructure.
Nobody knows how big or how active the routing table can get before
the Internet's core routers start crashing. But current projections
show that if the growth goes unchecked, the Internet could face a
router processing-power crunch in as soon as 18 months.
"It's not the size of the table, but the number of updates per second
that kills a router stone dead," explains Geoff Huston, a Telstra
official who tracks this statistic for the IETF. "By the time the
table gets to around 200,000 entries, we may be pushing a default-free
router well beyond its processing capability."
In addition, the churn in the Internet's routing table means that it
is taking longer to propagate accurate routing information globally
across the Internet.
The time it takes the Internet to process a route withdrawal or a
route announcement is getting longer, Huston says. "This is again a
processor overload issue."
What's driving the increase in routing table entries is the rising
popularity of multihoming on corporate networks. Multihoming is the
term used to describe a network configuration in which one Internet
server is connected to two different ISPs for improved reliability and
redundancy. A multihomed network requires a separate entry in the
routing table for each ISP.
Most large companies and dot-coms multihome their networks. Huston
estimates that 70% of the announcements in today's routing table are
related to multihoming.
Multihoming is popular because the cost of transmission circuits is
plummeting, making it less expensive to buy Internet access services
from two or more ISPs. At the same time, companies are more concerned
about the reliability of their networks and less willing to trust one
service provider.
"Half of the companies that are multihomed should have gotten better
service from their providers," says Patrik Faltstrom, a Cisco engineer
and co-chair of the IETF's Applications Area. "ISPs haven't done a
good enough job explaining to their customers that they don't need to
multihome."
For network managers with multihomed networks, the growing size and
complexity of the Internet's routing table means they may need to buy
bigger, more expensive routers and upgrade them more frequently,
experts say. That's because routers must store a view of the routing
table for each ISP they use. The router processing problem is worse
for backbone providers, which store hundreds of views of the routing
table in their routers.
"When you talk about the size of the routing tables, it's a symptom
that you're talking about, like a cough,'' Baker says. "The issue
isn't that the routing tables are too big or multihoming is bad. It's
that these trends are driving equipment costs and putting more burdens
on the routing protocols."
In response, the IETF plans to revamp the 6-year-old standard used in
multihoming and backbone routing: the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
4. Network managers run BGP4 on routers to load balance and back up
their Internet traffic across multiple ISPs.
The IETF is concerned about whether BGP4 "can scale up to carrying
millions or even tens of millions of distinct routing entries," Huston
says. "I believe we can scale up BGP to about two to three times of
today without too much drama. . . . We could tweak BGP to scale up to
10 to 20 times the size of today if we had better use of route
attributes that allow selective aggregation."
Selective aggregation would reduce the number and frequency of changes
to the routing tables. For example, when the Internet's backbone loses
a link today, hundreds of messages are sent to the routing tables
saying that individual routes are down. In the future, BGP might be
able to announce this message once. Similarly, routers can communicate
only with a neighbor or the whole Internet using BGP4. In the future,
routers might also be able to communicate with the other routers along
one path of the Internet.
To tackle these questions of how best to revamp BGP4, the IETF has
launched a new effort called Prefix Taxonomy Ongoing Measurement and
Inter Network Experiment (Ptomaine). The BGP4 redesign should be done
in about a year.
The need to revamp BGP "is a problem we've been playing ostrich with
for years,'' says Randy Bush, co-chair of the IETF's operations and
management area and vice president of IP Networking at Verio. "An
upgrade to BGP will give network managers improved tools that allow
them to meet their redundancy and reliability needs with multihoming
and balance their traffic without being bad 'Net citizens'' by
overloading the routing tables.
Ultimately, the IETF may need to develop a new framework for routing,
in which load balancing and other traffic engineering messages used in
multihomed networks are carried by protocols other than BGP.

Darpa mobile project preps 'soldier's radio'
By George Leopold , EE Times
Mar 21, 2001 (1:03 PM)
URL: http://www.eetimes.com/story/OEG20010321S0049
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon's research agency is preparing to
demonstrate a "soldier's radio" next year designed to provide mobile
communications among individual troops anywhere on the
battlefield. The "infrastructure-free" radio network will be based on
the Linux operating system and will support multiple StrongARM
processors, program officials said. The Defense Advanced Research
Projects Agency (Darpa; Arlington, Va.) said it plans to demonstrate
the infantry radio concept in the field as early as the summer of
2002. The mobile-radio program, which seeks to provide each soldier
with a high-data-rate cell phone, would rely on "extreme frequency
agility" and a new networking approach to link infantry units spread
out over a wide area.
The "soldier's radio" is being developed by a contractor team led by
ITT Aerospace and Communications (Fort Wayne, Ind.). ITT is working
with MontaVista Software Inc. (Sunnyvale, Calif.) to port embedded
Linux to StrongARM processors. Darpa has adopted Linux as part of an
open-systems approach to technology development.
Much of the impetus for the tactical radio program stems from the
explosion of mobile communications in the commercial world. "People
always ask why there are no cell phones in the field," said Paul
Kolodzy, a program manager in Darpa's Advanced Technology Office. The
reason, of course, is that there are no relay towers or basestations
on the battlefield.
The Darpa mobile-communications program, also know as the "situational
awareness system," would use high-capacity, low-power radios linked
together by a "self-configuring" network to keep soldiers connected
with each other at frequencies ranging from 20 MHz to 2.5 GHz. Kolodzy
called the architecture a "mobile, ad-hoc, peer-to-peer network" that
uses frequency-hopping technology to avoid communication intercepts
and location-finding capability - in other words, situational
awareness on the battlefield - but little power.
If deployed, the system could be scaled up to as many as 10,000
network nodes. The reconfigurable network would have to perform
geographical routing of mobile communications via network
gateways. "How you do the geo-routing is the biggest deal," Kolodzy
said.
The planned technology demonstration next year would link 70 prototype
radios over a network utilizing MontaVista's Hard Hat version of the
standard Linux kernel and other open-source components, as well as
StrongARM processors, DSPs and FPGAs. All hardware was chosen to
reduce power consumption in the field.
The first beta version of the soldier's radio is expected to be ready
by the end of the year, program officials said.
The field tests will help determine whether the radios can avoid enemy
jamming, estimate a soldier's position when the global positioning
system isn't available and provide a link between soldiers and
battlefield sensors. Moreover, developers will determine whether they
can keep the network operating in battlefield scenarios ranging from
jungles to congested urban areas.
Potential users of the soldier's radio include the Army, Marine Corps
and U.S. Special Operations Forces, Darpa said.
Program officials and contractors are also touting the
mobile-communications program as an example of how commercial
equipment based on open-source systems can be used to get new systems
to the field faster and at lower cost. For example, ITT and MontaVista
said they were able to speed technology development by porting Linux
to StrongARM processors.

Scientists Find 22 Times the Recommended Max. Level of Dioxin in Food
Weekend News Today

Tue Apr 3,2001 -- Through just eating their food, Americans are getting 22=
times the maximum dioxin exposure suggested by the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, according to the new study. (This does not include the
other ways people are also exposed to this.) The study says levels of dioxi=
n
=97 among the most toxic substances on Earth =97 remain high in the U.S.
food supply although they have declined in the environment. In food samples=
from around the country scientists at the University of Texas School of
Public Health at Houston found no decline from test samples taken more
than a decade ago. Dr. Arnold Schecter, who directed the study, said, =93We=
have to reduce the highly toxic, persistent chemicals in the environment.=
=94
Meat and dairy products are considered the biggest sources. Dioxins
concentrate in animal fat, and the best way to avoid them is to eat more
fruits and vegetables. =93This is just one more reason for having less anim=

fats in our diets,=94 Schecter told the Houston Chronicle in today=92s edit=
ions.
=93Blood samples from pure vegans, who consume no animal products, show
that they have less dioxins in their bodies than average Americans.=94 Broi=
ling
was the most effective cooking method of reducing dioxins, Schecter said. =
Dioxins are a family of 219 toxic chemicals found in the environment mostly=
as a byproduct of industrial processes such as smelting, bleaching of paper=
pulp and manufacturing of some herbicides or pesticides. Burning of plastic=
s
and toxic waste at high temperatures by medical waste incinerators or kilns=
can also produce dioxins. Contained in Agent Orange, dioxins are a toxic
chemical known for causing various forms of cancer. Occasional natural
occurrences, such as volcanic eruptions or forest fires, can also produce
them.
Number of Alzheimer patients increasing faster than expected

There is no known cure for Alzheimer=92s, which today afflicts about 4 mill=

Wall St. gets hammered; Fear about profit growth sends Dow, Nasdaq
plunging to triple-digit losses
Weekend News Today
Lead: faith
Source: CNNfn.com
Tue Apr 3,2001 -- U.S. stocks got slammed Tuesday after a slew of earnings=
warnings brought fears to the forefront about how companies will perform in=
a
slowing economy. Another day, another 29-month low on the Nasdaq
composite index, which shed more than 100 points. It has become an
almost daily occurrence for the indicator to exceed its previous decline.
Meanwhile, the Dow Jones industrial average plunged nearly 300 points. All=
30 issues on the Dow took a beating, with most falling more than $1.
"People don't want to lose any more money, and selling begets selling," sai=
d
Peter Green, market analyst with Gerard Klauer Mattison & Co. "No one is
giving any good guidance and it's a complete selling fest." The Nasdaq
composite index fell 109.98, or more than 6 percent, to 1,672.99. The
indicator is now at levels it hasn't seen in more than 29 months, and has l=
ost
two-thirds of its value from its March 10, 2000, high of 5,048.62.
But the selling wasn't confined to tech issues, as worries about growth
spilled into the broader market. Just two weeks ago, the Dow briefly steppe=
d
into bear market territory =96 defined as a 20 percent drop from a high.
"Whenever companies come out with warnings, it reminds investors about
the perilous nature of the earnings environment at the moment," said Joseph=
Battipaglia, chief investment strategist at Gruntal & Co. The Dow Jones
industrial average dropped 292.22, or around 3 percent, to 9,485.71. The bl=
ue
chip indicator is down 19 percent from its Jan. 14, 2000 high of 11,722. Th=
e
Standard & Poor's 500 shed 39.43 to 1,106.44 and is down 27 percent from
its March 23, 2000 high of 1,527.
It wasn't just the warnings plaguing sentiment. With the tax deadline just =
13
days away, some investors also may be feeling the pain of having to ante up=
money for tax liabilities suffered in the face of last year's significant e=
quity
losses. "People lost money last year and now they have to pay the tax bill =
--
'They're saying I lost money and now I have to write a check.' They're not=
thinking about earnings or warnings," said Vince Farrell, chief investment=
officer with Spears Benzak Salomon & Farrell.
Market breadth was negative. On the New York Stock Exchange, decliners
beat advancers 2,362 to 735. Losers outpaced winners on the Nasdaq 3,012
to 785. Signs of continued weakness in the day's economic data didn't help=
the negativity plaguing the markets. The government's report on factory
orders pointed to further slowing in the manufacturing sector. "The quarter=
is
starting off pretty rough," Brett Gallagher, head of U.S. equities with Jul=
ius
Baer, told CNNfn's Market Call. "We're heading into earnings season and I
don't think anyone is expecting anything good." But analysts say this is
mildly encouraging because it sets the stage for a near-term bottoming out=
that could bring some money back in off the sidelines.
Market participants have been bracing for the worst. The influx of warnings=
from companies in all sectors has met those expectations and fueled the
selloff.
Florida woman's house invaded by black widow spiders
Weekend News Today

Tue Apr 3,2001 -- An itsy-bitsy spider it's not. At least not to the woman =
who
in recent days has found her home overrun by a seemingly endless stream of=
black widow spiders. Since the insects began showing up about a month
ago, Marge Mock said it hasn't been uncommon for her to kill five, 10, 15 o=

more at a clip. "It can really freak you out," she said of the scores of bl=

spiders bearing the distinctive red hourglass mark. "Especially if you're
someone who's generally uncomfortable around spiders, like I am."
The poisonous black widow lives in a range extending from Massachusetts
to Florida and west to Texas and Oklahoma, though they are most common
in the Deep South. The first time she came across one in her home about a
year ago, Mock said she passed it off as simply an odd occurrence. "Fine,
no big deal, I thought, and because I destroyed the egg sack near the spide=
r
I thought I had taken care of the situation," Mock said. "Then suddenly, on=
e,
two and sometimes three would appear, and finally, in the past three weeks=
to a month, it just became acute," she said. "I started finding them hiding=
under the rim of potted plants, under the recycling bin, even under the coo=

hands, Mock, who said she has never even been able to sit through the
movie "Arachnophobia," turned to the encyclopedia on her computer to learn=
all she could about them. "I was looking for anything I could find on their=
habits and lifestyles and why they wanted to be with me." she said. Of all=
spiders, the female black widow is among the most feared, because it is
venomous.
"However, it's easy to overstate that danger because not everyone is
imperiled by the bite of a black widow, and unless they are defending their=
eggs, in most cases they'd rather run than bite," said G.B. Edwards, an
entomologist specializing in spider research with the Florida Department of=
Agriculture and Consumer Services. Edwards said this isn't black widow
spider egg-laying season - that occurs in the fall. And brown widows are st=
ill
months away from laying eggs. "Basically, it's just a fluke she has so many=
right now," he said. Of course, what Mock most wanted to know was how
she could get rid of the unwelcome house guests. Edwards' response? "You
can't," he said. "Once you've got them, you've got them. There's nothing,
realistically, that you can do."

Weekend News Today

Tue Apr 3,2001 -- Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has instructed the IDF to
make every effort not to uproot trees in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip,=
Army Radio reported. According to Sharon's directive, if the IDF determines=
terrorists are using trees for cover, it should prune the lower branches an=
d
not cut down the whole tree, which the IDF has been doing until now.
During the seventies Sharon had enacted a similar policy of pruning trees i=
n
the Gaza Strip to prevent terrorists from taking cover behind them. Earlier=
this week Sharon expressed dissatisfaction with the fact the IDF recently
uprooted some olive trees for security reasons, according to sources in the=
Prime Minister's Bureau.

Tue Apr 3,2001 -- Egypt has placed its security forces on alert amid the

launch attacks against Egyptian targets during Mubarak's visit. They said t=
he
plans are being coordinated with Saudi billionaire Osama Bin Laden. It was=
the first time since 1997 that Egypt has warned of a terrorist attack.

Chinese board U.S. plane, take gear
Weekend News Today

Tue Apr 3,2001 -- Chinese military officials have boarded a grounded U.S.
surveillance plane and removed equipment from it despite U.S. protests. In =
a
signal that a standoff between the two nations is not likely to end soon,
Pentagon sources told CNN on Tuesday that China had begun removing
sensitive eavesdropping equipment from the plane. They added that this did=
not bode well for getting the plane back soon. The United States considers=
the plane sovereign territory that should not be boarded by Chinese soldier=
s.
Pentagon officials also said that if China does not release the 24 crew
members soon, it is hard not to consider them hostages. The fate of the U.S=
.
crew members, now in their third day of captivity on the Chinese island of=
Hainan, has yet to be determined. U.S. officials are preparing to meet with=
the crew in the Hainan Island capital of Haikou. The crew were last heard
from shortly after the emergency landing Sunday on Hainan, following a mid-
air collision with a Chinese fighter, one of two that had been trailing it.=
A U.S. official has said the next several hours -- into Tuesday evening
Washington time -- would be critical in determining the course of the
standoff, and whether it would cause any lasting damage to U.S.-China
relations. "Our people need to see the crew and need to see them soon,"
this official said. President George W. Bush on Monday demanded
immediate access to the crew and the return of the top-secret surveillance=
aircraft.
Coffin-furniture: A business to die for?
Weekend News Today

Tue Apr 3,2001 -- Mark J. Zeabin has lived the aphorism that every cloud ha=
s
a silver lining. "A lot of things in my life happened through tragedy," exp=
lains
the 25-year-old Canadian entrepreneur. During his third year at art school,=
when he discovered that his girlfriend was pregnant, he started to ponder h=
ow
he would support his impending family. A few months later, in January, 1997=
,
Zeabin's beloved grandmother died. So, together with his father, Zeabin bui=
lt
her a coffin. And that's when he came up with a business idea. "Why should=
you use a casket for only one day and pay $5,000 for it?" Zeabin reasoned. =
Later that year he borrowed money from his father, surviving grandparents,=
and the Canadian government to start Casketfurniture.com. The site offers t=
o
"reduce the burden of a high-priced funeral with unique alternatives." And=
unique they certainly are. Zeabin designs and sells online entertainment
centers, couches, display cases, and pet boxes -- all conspicuously wide at=
hips -- that can be converted into caskets upon the purchaser's death.
Church board asks Lutherans to affirm welcome to gays
Weekend News Today

Tue Apr 3,2001 -- The Division for Outreach of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America is asking the Church Council to develop a message that
would affirm the church's commitment to hospitality for gays and lesbians,=
building on an earlier message from the Conference of Bishops.
"We repudiate all words and acts of hatred toward gay and lesbian persons
in our congregation and in our communities, and extend a caring welcome for=
gay and lesbian persons and their families," said the bishops in their 1996=
letter to the church.
The Division for Outreach said, at its February meeting, that it "would hop=
e
that the message of that letter would go farther." The church's board for t=
he
Division for Ministry is submitting a "Report on conversations about
homosexuality and the church" to the Church Council and to the 2001
Churchwide Assembly this summer. It is a report on the actions, meetings
and commitments the church has made. The church's Division for Church in
Society has asked for materials to aid the discussion of "justice issues fo=
r
gay and lesbian persons in church and society."

Today in Science/Astronomy:
* Nemesis: Does the Sun Have a 'Companion'?
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solarsystem/nemesis_010320.html?Enews=y
When you think big, as Richard A. Muller does, you're bound to create ideas now and then that are so compelling you just can't let go of them -- ideas so outlandish that mainstream scientists are equally eager to dismiss them.
* Most Intense Solar Flare of 11-Year Cycle Detected, Awe Over Auroras
http://www.space.com/spacewatch/aurora_sightings_010402.html?Enews=y
The most powerful solar flare of the currently 11-year sun cycle was detected Monday by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
* Free-Floating Planets -- British Team Restakes Its Claim
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/astronomy/free_floaters_010403.html?Enews=y
An academic tug-of-war over worlds beyond our solar system continued Tuesday, with two British scientists reasserting their claim to have found free-floating planets that others say are nothing of the sort.
* Satellite View Aids Saone Flood Mapping
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/planetearth/esa_saone_010403.html?Enews=y
The floods that recently struck France have wrought havoc, forcing hundreds of families to flee their homes. However, satellite maps rapidly produced under the International Charter on Space and Major Disasters have given civil authorities a synthetic view of the flood to help them cope with the disaster.
* Farthest Supernova Detected, 'Dark Energy' Suspected
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/astronomy/farthest_supernova_010402.html?Enews=y
The Hubble Space Telescope recently captured light from a supernova located farther from Earth than any previously seen.
-------------------------------------
Today in Missions/Launches:
* Microphone to Go to Mars in 2007
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/missions/listen_mars_010403.html?Enews=y
An international group of space enthusiasts announced Monday a microphone will be sent to Mars in 2007 aboard a French spacecraft, easing the disappointment of a previous U.S. attempt that ended in failure.
* Mir Reentry Eludes Citron Sightseeing Expedition
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/missions/mir_citron_observations_010402.html?Enews=y
A private expedition hoping to witness last month's fall from orbit of the huge Russian Mir space station missed the space debris fireworks over the south Pacific. Two chartered aircraft hauling an elite entourage of "pay-per-view" customers, scientists, space buffs, Russian space officials and cosmonauts failed to see Mir tumble through the sky and crash into ocean waters.
