Chemical in Computer Monitors Triggers Allergies, Illness
By Cat Lazaroff
WASHINGTON, DC, September 19, 2000 (ENS) - Computer workers who suffer from headaches may have more than eye strain to blame. New research suggests that emissions from the plastic of computer video monitors may affect workers´ health.
A Swedish study presented in the September 15 edition of "Environmental Science & Technology," a peer reviewed journal of the American Chemical Society, shows that triphenyl phosphate can cause allergic reactions in some people. The reactions can range from itching and nasal congestion to headaches.
Triphenyl phosphate is a chemical compound widely used as a flame retardant in the plastic of video monitors and other products.
Computer monitors emit the compound when their temperature rises during normal operations, said Conny Ostman, lead author of the study, from Stockholm University in Sweden. It is unknown how much exposure can cause an allergic reaction, he added.
What is known is that new computers emit more of the compound than older ones.
"We have focused our interest on this compound since it has been proven to be a contact allergen to man and due to the fact that a number of workers in Sweden have acquired health problems related to computer work," Ostman said.
The researchers measured the level of the compound in the "breathing zone," located about two feet in front of the video screen. Temperatures of the operating monitors ranged between 122 degrees and 131 degrees Fahrenheit.
The researchers tested the bodies of computers as well, but found they contained no significant amounts of the compound.
The emissions levels dropped sharply after eight days of continuous operation, the researchers found, but remained 10 times higher than the background level even after 183 days - roughly the equivalent of about two years of working use.
Computers are a significant source of allergenic emissions in small indoor environments like offices, Ostman said. Even with adequate ventilation, the compound may be a potential health hazard for computer users, he warned.
The researchers found appreciable concentrations of the compound in 10 of the 18 brand new video monitors they tested.
Ostman declined to name their manufacturer, saying that almost all manufacturers use the same flame retardant compound. The presence and levels of triphenyl phosphate in monitors varied with the place where they were manufactured, he explained.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration sets a safety limit of three milligrams per cubic meter of air for triphenyl phosphate, noting that it can cause changes in blood enzymes in humans. The chemical is also classified as causing "occupational allergic contact dermatitis."
A concentration of 1,000 milligrams per cubic meter of air is listed as "immediately dangerous to life or health" by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health.
The U.S. Geological Survey monitors for triphenyl phosphate in water because it is classified as an "emerging contaminant," one whose environmental or health risks are suspected but not confirmed.
Besides its use in plastic products, triphenyl phosphate is also an ingredient in some pesticides.
U.S. state and federal agencies monitor for triphenyl phosphate in groundwater and soil, noting that it can leach from landfills and abandoned industrial sites.

Breast Implant Tax Break for Massage Worker
COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - A tax appeals board in Denmark has allowed a massage parlor worker to deduct the cost of breast implants, newspapers reported Tuesday.
The board decided that the surgery represented a legitimate investment.
Danish corporate tax law says investments to improve or maintain facilities for running a business are tax-deductible.
The municipal tax authority had initially rejected the claim.

The indispensable computer in your office and home is a portal to 15
million pages of porn on the Web. This year, 72 million people
worldwide will be virtual voyeurs.
Sept. 19, 2000
By Heather Stringer
It happened almost every morning. Eric arrived at work wondering how
to distract himself from the lure of Internet porn sites. With just a
few e-mails awaiting answers, the San Jose marketing communications
manager was overcome with the intense desire to view an adult Web
site. Quickly finishing his work-related tasks, Eric (not his real
name) soon had visions of a particular porn site dancing through his
head.
Eric, 30, attempted to divert his lascivious craving with a Web
search of mundane sites, like whales, but even the computer seemed to
conspire against him. If he keyed in "po" for a search on possums,
the URL was automatically completed with previously visited sites
such as porncity.com. Succumbing to temptation, Eric finally entered
an adult site, preparing for a reverie of lust-but his heart leapt
when he heard footsteps approaching. Eric quickly minimized his site.
He'd continue later.
He is one of more than 72 million people worldwide who will visit
porn sites this year, fueling the $1.1 billion online adult industry,
according to Flying Crocodile Inc., a Seattle-based company tracking
online porn traffic. The company estimates between 8 and 15 percent
of the Net's surfers visit adult sites each week. With more than 15
million porn Web pages to choose from, it's a veritable smorgasbord
of sex. The top online adult site in July, Karasxxx.com, attracted
more than 3 million visitors-exceeding the number visiting CDNOW.com
or Hotmail.com, according to Nielsen/NetRatings of Milpitas, an
Internet audience measurement service.

1. OFF AGAIN, ON AGAIN
In what opposition leaders called anything from a "zig-zag" (Yisrael
B'Aliyah MK Natan Sharansky) to a "total humiliation" (Likud MK Yehoshua
Matza), Prime Minister Ehud Barak reinstated the talks with the
Palestinians last night, after calling them off only four hours earlier.
It was originally announced shortly after 5 PM yesterday that a scheduled
meeting between Israel and Palestinian negotiators would not be held,
because Israel was unhappy with the increasingly inflexible Palestinian
positions. The Palestinian response was one of anger, and the Americans
too showed signs of bewilderment, and Israel announced shortly afterward
that the talks were back on.
Opposition leader MK Ariel Sharon (Likud), in a pre-election visit at the
Haifa market today, said about Barak, "He was a very courageous officer,
but as Prime Minister, he is very weak - everything about him is
weakness." The Prime Minister rejected criticism of his strategy, and
dismissed his Office's contradictory announcements as "misunderstandings
and mishaps." He repeated the Prime Minister's Office's official
explanation, saying that the meetings since Camp David have not been
"negotiations," but rather "contacts," thus that the negotiations were
never stopped.
Following the Israeli turnaround, the Palestinians quickly went on the
offensive - but it was similarly short-lived: Yasser Arafat said that he
would not renew the talks until he receives clarifications from Prime
Minister Barak as to why he stopped the talks yesterday. Later in the
afternoon, though, PA official Abu Mazen said that the Palestinians are
willing to resume final-status framework talks with Israel in the coming
weeks - and a meeting between Israeli Atty. Gilad Sher and the
Palestinians' Saeb Erekat is now scheduled for this evening. Abu Mazen
took the opportunity to emphasize that the Palestinians demand full
sovereignty over Jerusalem.
2. JERUSALEM BILL, NEGOTIATIONS - SET TO RACE
The relevant Knesset subcommittees will vote on Monday on Likud MK Yehoshua
Matza's proposed bill requiring an absolute Knesset majority to approve any
change in the status, area, or borders of Jerusalem. Matza expressed
confidence that the bill would pass, but agreed that "it is a race" as to
whether his bill will pass before Barak signs an agreement giving away
parts of Jerusalem. The Knesset will vote on the bill in November, after
the Knesset recess.
3. ARAFAT SMUGGLES TERRORIST AROUND
Abu Abbas, who headed the Palestinian Liberation Front terrorist
organization, says that the Israeli security limitations placed upon his
entry to Israel don't faze him. "If the Israelis prevent me from passing
from Gaza to Hevron, Yasser Arafat simply takes me in his helicopter," he
said. Arutz-7 correspondent Haggai Huberman reports that the Netanyahu
government placed severe restrictions upon the entry of Abu Abbas - whose
organization was responsible for the murder of wheelchair-bound Leon
Klinghoffer - into pre-1967 Israel.
4. CALLS FOR RELIGIOUS PUBLIC TO WAKE UP
MK Yigal Bibi (National Religious Party), a former Deputy Religious Affairs
Minister, said that the religious public has still not awakened to the
severe consequences of Barak's secular revolution - especially for
religious education. He called on the public to hold public protests
outside ministers' homes, conduct mass vigils, and take other forms of
protest against the planned measures.
MK Natan Sharansky, leader of the Yisrael B'Aliyah party, blames Prime
Minister Barak for "enlisting half the nation against the other" in the
struggle over what has become known as the secular revolution, and "this
could destroy the nation." He did not commit to vote one way or other
regarding Barak's secular proposals, but criticized the manner in which
they were presented.
5. OFFICIALLY AN EPIDEMIC
The West Nile virus is now an "epidemic." So confirmed for the first time
today Dr. Boaz Lev, Director-General of the Health Ministry. At a press
conference in Tel Aviv today, Dr. Lev said that of the 161 cases diagnosed
since mid-July, 41 people have recovered, and 75 are still being treated in
hospitals; nine are listed in serious condition. The 13th victim died
yesterday, and another 10-15 cases of the disease are discovered every
day. The disease is spread by mosquitoes and the presence of dead
birds. Out of hundreds of requests, the Environment Ministry has approved
the spraying of only 36 areas with the "fog" pesticide.
Prof. Tzvi Shpirer, director of Dana Children's Hospital at Ichilov Medical
Center, said yesterday that children have a natural immunization against
the disease. They can catch the fever, he said, but "their bodies know how
to deal with the virus." People whose natural immunization systems have
been weakened are most at risk, according to Prof. Shpirer.
6. EL AL WOULD LOSE MORE THAN IT GAINS
A senior El Al employee told Globes newspaper today that El Al's expected
losses from the transfer to a seven-day week will be greater than its
profits from such a move. Flights on the Sabbath could net the company an
extra 50 million shekels - but at the same time it will lose 60 million
shekels from the expected religious boycott of the airline. El Al is
considering flying on Shabbat under another commercial name.
7. "SOUNDS OF SILENCE" ON ARMY RADIO?
Acum - the Society for Author, Composers, and Music Publishers in Israel -
has filed suit against Army Radio (Galei Tzahal) and its daughter station
Galgalatz for their alleged failure to pay required royalties for the past
two years. The suit asks that the stations be forbidden from broadcasting
any music until the debt is settled, and demands that the outstanding bill
of 9.5 million shekels ($2.35 million) be paid at once.
Nili Verker, of the legal department of Acum, explained to Arutz-7 today
that Acum is a body that represents 3000 musicians in Israel, as well as
millions more around the world as the official Israeli body in CISAC
(International Confederation of Societies of Authors and
Composers). "Radio stations pay us for each song that they play," Verker
said, "and the payment is partially based on the size of the stations'
budgets and income." When reminded of Army Radio's fiscal difficulties,
she said, "We don't want to cause the closure of Galei Tzahal, but the
musicians are in no better shape, and they have no obligation to provide
their services for free to bodies that are certainly stronger financially
than they are." She confirmed that Arutz-7 pays royalties as required.
8. KEEPING TERRORISTS IN PRISON
The Attorney-General and the Chief Military Prosecutor are in favor of
proposed legislation designed to prevent the release of terrorist Sheikhs
Obeid and Dirani from prison. Prime Minister Barak told the Knesset
Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee today that a balance must be found
between the need for the terrorists' detention and the Basic Law on Human
Dignity. He noted, however, that in light of the "special reality in our
region, it is advisable for the State to have a tool by which to detain
people who are not prisoners of war." The Committee will continue its
deliberations on the proposed law at a future date.
*** HISTORICAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"...You declare, my friend, that you do not hate the Jews, you are merely
'anti-Zionist.' And I say, let the truth ring forth from the high mountain
tops, let it echo through the valleys of God's green earth: When people
criticize Zionism, they mean Jews - this is God's own truth... All men of
good will exult in the fulfillment of God's promise, that his People should
return in joy to rebuild their plundered land. This is Zionism, nothing
more, nothing less... And what is anti-Zionist? It is the denial to the
Jewish people of a fundamental right that we justly claim for the people of
Africa and freely accord all other nations of the Globe. It is
discrimination against Jews, my friend, because they are Jews. In short, it
is anti-Semitism... Let my words echo in the depths of your soul: When
people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews - make no mistake about it."
