Asteroids pose threat to Earth
By Colin Brown, Political Editor

3 September 2000

It's official: the Earth is at risk from falling asteroids.

A Government task force has concluded that the threat of asteroids crashing to Earth as portrayed in Hollywood movies Deep Impact and Armageddon is not the stuff of science fiction – it's very, very real.

The task force on Near Earth Objects (NEOs) will publish its findings later this month. It will confirm that there is a distinct possibility of asteroids and comets hurtling to Earth and will urge the Government to take a lead in seeking international action to avert the threat.

The recommendations include more work to identify the asteroids or comets that could present a risk, including building a new telescope, possibly in the southern hemisphere, to help to track the objects far out in space and to study the physical properties of NEOs.

"It says the threat is serious. There is absolutely no doubt about that at all, and it goes into a great deal of detail. It says the threat is significant enough to warrant action," said one source who has seen the report.

"A risk assessment shows that the risk from NEOs is up there with air crashes, train crashes, emissions from nuclear reactors like Chernobyl. It is above the line of tolerability set by the health and safety executive. If this threat was owned by somebody, it would be an offence – that is the sort of analogy that has grabbed the politicians."

Until recently the Government had been sceptical about the hazards but science minister Lord Sainsbury was persuaded to set up the task force in January following a campaign by scientific experts.

It marks a personal victory for the Liberal Democrat MP Lembit Opik, who has waged a lone campaign in the Commons for the issue to be taken seriously. "I don't think that people are laughing any more at the idea that NEOs are a real threat. Two or three years ago there was a high giggle factor about NEOs but in the last 18 months the scientific community and the general public have changed their view measurably. The popular media has woken up to the threat because of Deep Impact and Armageddon. It is literally a matter of life and death if there is an impact."

Mr Opik became fascinated with the issue because his grandfather, Ernst, was an astronomer who discovered a cloud of a trillion comets in the outer solar system. "It's called the Oort cloud but it was nearly called the Opik cloud," said the MP.

There has been growing acceptance that the dinosaurs may have been wiped out by a catastrophic asteroid or comet strike in the Gulf of Mexico. There is also evidence that more recent strikes on the Earth included one in 1904 that had the impact of a nuclear explosion in Tunguska, Siberia, felling huge areas of forest.

The most recent scare was raised in March 1998, when scientists identified an asteroid which they thought could hit the Earth in 2028. The asteroid's trajectory has since been dismissed as a "near miss" but it galvanised politicians to take the threat of objects falling from space more seriously.

The three-man working party, chaired by Dr Harry Atkinson, with Professor David Williams and Sir Crispin Tickell, consulted with leading experts in the UK, Europe and the United States when investigating the magnitude of the hazard and is understood to have delivered its report in July to Lord Sainsbury.

The team was told by experts that the US is already taking the threat seriously but closer observations were needed to fill gaps in the American checks on space. Nasa has been ordered to identify within the next decade all the large NEOs of more than 1km – just over half a mile – across which present a threat to Earth. British experts warned the committee that smaller objects may not obliterate the planet, but they could destroy whole cities.

The working party is understood to have agreed with the scientific experts that closer studies are needed, and it can be done only through international co-operation. It then leaves Tony Blair's government a headache: if they do find an asteroid or comet that may hit the Earth, what can they do about it?

Jonathan Tate, who runs Spaceguard, a voluntary group of experts dedicated to NEOs, said they could deflect the asteroids by attaching rockets to blast them out of the Earth's orbit. Another option would be to vaporise part of the object with a nuclear explosion in space.

Major Tate, who took up the issue after watching the Shoemaker-Levy comet, said: "One of the main things we have to do is educate the public. We now know that impacts have happened in the past and could affect the global environment. People are now looking back through history to see whether, for instance, an impact in 540 caused the Dark Ages. The global economy is pretty fragile – look what happened after the earthquake in Japan. That was peanuts compared to what would happen if an asteroid took out a major city and at the moment, we just don't know."

Saddam Hussein has cancer

DUBAI, Sept 3 (AFP) - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is to undergo
chemotherapy for lymph cancer and a family council led by his youngest son
is ready to take control if he dies, a leading Arabic newspaper said Sunday.

Western newspapers have reported several times in recent years that
Saddam has cancer, but the London-based Asharq al-Awsat went into
considerable detail.

The Saudi financed publication quoted an Arab doctor "with an excellent
reputation" saying a medical team of three French doctors, one German and
one Swede were taking care of Saddam.

The team had been brought together by a committee chaired by the
president's personal secretary Abed Hmoud, the daily said.

One of the presidential palaces in a Baghdad suburb has been turned into a
private clinic for Saddam and equipped from Jordan, the Arab doctor, who is
attending a medical conference abroad, told Asharq al-Awsat.

Saddam had resigned himself to chemotherapy after suffering from inflamed
joints, breathing difficulties, poor vision and temporary memory loss, he said.
Asharq al-Awsat also quoted "independent" Iraqi sources saying Saddam
had called a family meeting and appointed his son Qussay to head a
"council" which would run Iraq in the event of his death or if he is no longer fit
enough to carry on.

Besides Qussay, who is in charge of the elite Republican Guard, the
meeting was attended by his elder brother Uday and Saddam's three half-
brothers Barzan, Watban et Sabawi al-Takriti, as well as Hmoud.

Barzan al-Takriti, who has fallen out with Saddam according to Arab reports,
is today a simple "adviser" within the family council which already takes part
in the running of Iraq's affairs, the Iraqi sources said.

The Iraqi authorities rarely comment on such reports, but several years ago
Saddam Hussein was shown on television swimming the Tigris river which
runs through Baghdad in a bid to deny Western reports that he was sick or
dying.

Judge Rejects Injunction to
Stop Minute of Silence

By Matthew Barakat
AP Writer
September 1, 2000

-- ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) -- A federal judge declined Thursday to issue an injunction that would halt a state law requiring public school students to observe a minute of silence.

The law, which took effect July 1, requires all school districts to impose a minute of silence so students can meditate, pray or engage in any other silent activity.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia filed suit on behalf of eight students who said the new law violates their First Amendment rights.

Thursday's ruling by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Claude Hilton does not directly address the merits of the ACLU lawsuit. Hilton said he agrees with state Solicitor General William Hurd, who argued that students will suffer no irreparable harm if the law remains in effect until a final decision is made in a week or two.

"There's nothing to fear from a classroom of silent, thoughtful children,'' Hurd said.

But Stuart H. Newberger, a Washington attorney who argued the case on behalf of the ACLU, said tens of thousands of students will be harmed significantly every day the law is in effect because it infringes on their constitutional rights.

"Virginia, like every other state, cannot get into the prayer business,'' he said.

Newberger said he will seek an injunction from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond to stop the law from taking effect before most students begin classes Tuesday. A ruling by the appeals court could come as early as Friday afternoon.

One of the eight student plaintiffs, Jordan Kupersmith, 16, a junior at a Loudoun County high school, has already been given detention for walking out of class during the minute of silence. He said he doesn't know what he will do if the law stands.

"I'm disappointed ... but I'm optimistic that this will go they way I want it to go,'' Kupersmith said after Thursday's ruling. "It's putting prayer in public schools and you just can't do that.''

Much of the courtroom debate centered on the 1985 case of Wallace v. Jaffree. In that case, the high court struck down a similar Alabama law that required students to meditate or pray silently. Unlike the Virginia law, it prohibited students from "engaging in any other silent activity.''

Hurd argued that the Virginia law merely points out that prayer is one of the students' options and that the state is not encouraging prayer. He said students could use the time to read a book, finish homework or just stare out the window if they choose.

"We've got to tell 'em somewhere that the kid can pray if he wants,'' Hurd said. "What better place to do that than the statute?''

Newberger said the Virginia law is almost identical to the one struck down in Alabama. He also said the legislative history of the law demonstrates that the legislature and Gov. Jim Gilmore, who signed the bill, had religious rather than secular motives in enacting the law.

Hilton will hear arguments on the merits of the case next Friday.

The Revolution in a Box
Manufacturing meets the internet in a new technology that could make
factories obsolete.

Next time you have to wait six weeks for the kitchen door or lawn furniture
you ordered, think of Gene Kirila. He would have you order your custom
whatever at a store register, then direct you to drive around back, where--
Presto! Out it would pop from a portable minifactory.

Kirila has devised a system that will make almost any product, anywhere,
anytime. Well, at least anything that can be molded--which is just about
everything we touch these days. Kirila's Virtual Engineered Composites
(VEC) process is a factory in a box. The box can be as small as a mop
basin or as big (so far) as a 40-ft. freight container. Plopped down in the
middle of Azerbaijan or Arizona or Angola, it could start pushing out toilet
seats one day and pipeline sections the next.

Russian children to train for war

Mark Franchetti, Moscow

RUSSIAN schoolchildren are to be sent to summer military boot camps to learn how to dig trenches and fire Kalashnikov rifles. The move is part of President Vladimir Putin's campaign to restore a sense of national pride to the country's beleaguered armed forces.

Basic military training was back on the curriculum for the first time since the Soviet era as pupils began returning from their summer holidays last week.

Alongside traditional subjects such as history and maths, they will be obliged to attend marching lessons and special courses on how to react to crises such as impending nuclear attack, terrorist bombs or hostage-taking. There will be special drills with gas masks.

The climax will come at the end of each summer term when all boys over the age of 15 will be made to spend a week at a military training camp, where retired army officers will teach them how to assemble and fire Kalashnikovs. They will also use mortars, practise various fighting techniques and dig trenches. Girls will be taught first aid.

Alla Timokhovskaya, the deputy director of Moscow's school number 620, said the classes in "military-patriotic education" would turn pupils into better citizens.

"We will take our kids on excursions to military bases and tank museums," she said. "They will receive lessons in patriotism, will study at even greater length the history of the second world war, and will meet veterans."

The Kremlin hopes the classes will help improve the poor standing of the Russian army, which has been plagued by corruption, desertion and underfunding since the collapse of communism and the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Such military training is to become compulsory, reviving a practice of the Soviet era Photograph: David King The move comes as Putin, a Soviet-era spy and former director of the FSB - the successor organisation to the KGB - prepares to increase military spending in an effort to restore national pride in Russia's crippled armed forces. They have been shaken by the Kursk disaster and setbacks in the war against separatists in Chechnya.

Compulsory military training and classes in patriotism were a staple diet in Soviet schools, where children were taught to fear the West and prepare to fend off a Nato invasion. The practice was abolished in 1991 by Mikhail Gorbachev, the last Soviet president, as he dismantled the old communist system.

His successor, Boris Yeltsin, signed a decree in 1998 reintroducing the measures, but little effort was made to implement it. Putin, however, has long been a supporter of the scheme and drew up detailed guidelines on its implementation on December 31 last year - the day Yeltsin resigned and Putin was promoted from prime minister to replace him.

While most European countries have abolished conscription, in Russia all men above 18 are expected to serve a full two years. Thousands of young conscripts have died in wars in Afghanistan and Chechnya.

Critics have seized on Putin's plans as reinforcing their view of the president as a man of authoritarian leanings who regards most issues through the needs of national security.

"Such initiatives to make children run around like soldiers and play with weapons are a full return to a Soviet military state," warned Valeria Novodvorskaya, a human rights campaigner who has often clashed with the authorities.

"But since it's coming from Putin this does not surprise me. What else can we expect from a leader with a KGB mentality? Unless people protest and mothers refuse to send their kids to training camps, there is no doubt that our society will become more militaristic."

Some have also questioned the need for compulsory training, given that there are special army training camps where parents can send their children during summer breaks if they wish.

At Cascade, a summer boot camp close to Moscow, young Russians already undergo training that differs little from that for special forces serving in Chechnya.

Clad in full camouflage uniforms, children as young as nine are put through a gruelling training course. It includes mock clashes and ambushes, and lessons in how to use weapons such as axes, knives and Kalashnikovs. Children are even taught how to handle a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

Some of the children come from broken families, and the scheme is said to help them out of crime-ridden neighbourhoods and into the army.

"I teach the kids here that you can use almost anything at hand to kill an enemy: a stone, a piece of wood, a comb or even a spoon," said Gennady Karatayev, the commander.

"Our children should not be afraid of the army. It is important to make them understand that it is prestigious to serve in it.

"It is not normal that mothers should hide their children from the army when they are called up, while terrorists are bombing our houses."

Subject: [BPR] - Bullinger correction?
From: bpr-list@philologos.org("Tricia")
Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2000 16:00:42 +0100

I'm pleased to be taking part in this list. Many of the items on the home
site are those which I had been researching myself, and I was pleased to see
so many like-minded scholars!

(note: if you think my spelling is "funny" it's because I'm a Brit!)

I'm sorry to kick off with what seems to be a controversial message, but I
think I'm right here. In Bullinger's famous book "Witness Of The Stars" he
points out that one of the constellations in Virgo was in the Egyptian
Zodiac Coma Berenice (the wig). He then gives that constellation as a
picture of a woman seated on a chair with a young child standing upright on
her lap.

This, he took presumably from the Denderah Zodiac, where such an image does
indeed appear. (It seems from the text of his book that he did not at the
time of writing have the entire Denderah zodiac drawing, but only individual
illustrations.)

HOWEVER, that picture cannot in fact be Coma Berenice, as the constellation
[in the Denderah Zodiac] is not in the correct place for it to be Coma B,
and what is reputed to be Coma B in that Zodiac is in fact a small figure
standing behind Leo and is part of the tail of Leo. (This is confirmed by
separate images of the Zodiac engraved on an Egyptian Temple Portico.)

The Egyptian Coma appears to be a small figure of a woman holding the tail
of Leo, and standing on a curved animal (or possibly the tail of Leo). One
astronomical site says the Coma Star Cluster "was once known as the tuft of
hair at the end of Leo's tail."

Bullinger places his woman-with-child illustration, in his pull-out map of
the heavens at the back of his book, between Ursa Major and Bootes, with the
figure of Virgo underneath. That is correctly placed as far as the
modern-day "wig" (coma) group of stars exists today, BUT it is NOT where the
Egyptian Zodiac places this same figure!

This is important only when you realise how many people have drawn from
Bullinger's book, including myself in the past, and used his research and
comments on Coma being the ancient sign for the Virgin who shall bear the
Messiah (The Desired, as he calls it).

Dr Werner Papke, who says he has identified the Star of Bethlehem, is one
such person and he says that star appeared in 2BC in the middle of the Coma
cluster of stars, which he names as the ancient ERUA constellation. (The
modern Wig he says sits in the middle, or womb, of the ancient sight of
ERUA.)

However, interestingly, his own illustration of the sign is yet another
figure in the Denderah Zodiac, in yet another place - it is the figure of a
woman sitting on a chair holding two staves or branches. This figure is
located UNDERNEATH LEO in the Egyptian drawings. Coma cannot be at one and
the same time, beside, above and below Leo. So there seems to be great
confusion on this.

Another interesting speculation regarding this placement of Coma at the tail
of Leo is that the bright star Denebola may in fact belong to Coma, and also
the cluster or ring of stars just above, given in Bullinger's map as a twirl
in the tail of Leo. Thus we do in fact have an important figure of a woman
in the sky with a circlet or crown of stars on her head! But maybe all along
we have missed this fact. Since her feet and part of her body exist within
the ecliptic, the sun and moon would indeed pass through this figure,
allowing for the possibility that it would show up as being clothed with the
sun and with the moon at her feet. So I suggest that this is of some
importance, prophetically.

LET'S TALK ARAMAIC

A new language will be taught in the Israeli public school system as of this
year: Aramaic. The public-religious Noam school in the northern city of
Kiryat Ata will offer the course in the framework of the Talmud curriculum.
Aramaic-language pamphlets with illustrations of Talmudic stories will be the
text, and the 4th-to-8th grade students will engage in word games and
exercises in Aramaic grammar and vocabulary. Elimelech Lendner,
Chairman of the Religious Education Center, said, "Even this short
introduction to Aramaic [the language spoken by many Jews during Talmudic
times] is a perfect means by which to arouse
the curiosity and interest of young students in difficult Talmudic passages."

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

Secrets of Golgotha : The Lost History of Jesus'Crucifixion
by Ernest L. Martin

Paperback 2nd edition (June 1996)
Assc. for Scriptual Knowledge
ISBN: 0945657862

"This book reveals brand new discoveries that precisely locate the
site where Christ was crucified and resurrected from the dead. Some
may say that it makes no difference where the place was in the
Jerusalem area as long as we know and believe that Christ did in fact
die for our sins. But when the true site is recognized, a new
understanding of the Gospel of Christ emerges on the scene which
enlightens our comprehension of what the Gospel itself is all about.
It brings together much typical teaching of the Old Testament into a
living reality by revealing new views of the works that Christ did
while he was on earth, and what he did for mankind at Calvary.

"Recently uncovered geographical and historical evidence now point to
the site recognized by early Christians—the southern summit of the
Mt. of Olives—and confirm Paul's indication that the punishment
occured "outside the camp." Reconciles in great detail both Roman and
Jewish legal requirements.

"This book has extensive historical research to show that the people
of the fourth century were deceived in selecting the present day
Church of the Holy Sepulchre. This 455 page book has a great deal of
carefully researched information that will make the biblical messages
come alive as never before. It shows that the teachings of the New
Testament about the crucifixion are historically true. It presents a
central key to understanding the whole of the Bible."

Rabbis meet to ponder synagogue for Mount
By Nadav Shragai Ha'aretz Correspondent

A committee of rabbis named by the Chief Rabbinate to examine the
issue of building a synagogue on the Temple Mount is slated to meet
tomorrow for the first time.

The committee includes rabbis with a wide range of opinion on whether
there should be an official Jewish presence on the contested site,
with the rabbis coming from different religious traditions. The
committee is expected to make recommendations to the Chief Rabbinate
under its mandate "to examine all ways of manifesting our sovereignty
and rights on the Temple Mount." The committee will hear historical
testimonies on the presence of synagogues in previous generations,
going back to the destruction of the Second Temple.

Two main approaches to the issue will be deliberated.

One suggestion is for a synagogue on the outskirts of the Temple
Mount, over the Golden Gate, in such a way that access would not be
through the wall but over it. In theory at least this would
accommodate Jews whose religiosity forbids them from praying in the
Temple vicinity.

Building a synagogue on the outskirts of the site should stir less
opposition from Muslims for a Jewish presence on Temple Mount and
also from most rabbis opposed to such a foothold.

A second suggestion would be for a synagogue within the Temple Mount
site under an agreement with Muslim states and the Palestinian
authority. Rabbis who support a formal Jewish presence at the site
tend toward setting a synagogue near Mograbi gate, between Al-Aqsa
mosque and the Dome of the Rock. Mograbi Gate is the only place at
the site in full Israeli control. Another issue to be discussed is a
mikveh near the synagogue. Rabbis who oppose a formal Jewish presence
on the Temple Mount worry that Jews would enter holy areas on the
site without ritual purification.

The main opponents - because of halakha - of a Temple Mount synagogue
are Chief Rabbis Yisrael Lau and Eliahu Bakshi-Doron. Two former
chief rabbis, Mordechai Eliyahu and Avraham Shapira, say the matter
must be considered "seriously" and with "great care."

Meanwhile, a new organization called "Temple Mount Guard" is
increasingly vocal. Its activists distribute fliers to visitors on
the importance of the site to Jews.

This article makes me wonder what other books are available on this subject?

[Moderator: I'm curious as well Tricia. You mentioned a Dr. Papke and his
findings. Does he have any books or resources we can check out? Any
illustrations we can look at, etc? Oh.. btw... welcome to the list Tricia!
Very interesting first message. One more thing while I have you here.
Would you care if your message was cross-posted to another list? A list
