There's a story on the net at the moment, i.e.

about the potential for a volcano on La Palma to 'crash into the sea'.

The story, in part, is as follows:

"Geologists have told the UK Government that the country risks being hit by
a giant wave of water that could destroy many coastal communities.
Experts at University College London (UCL) have contacted the science
minister Lord Sainsbury to warn him that a collapsing volcano in the Canary
Islands could send a wall of water, hundreds of metres high, sweeping out
over the Atlantic Ocean.

Their research suggests the Caribbean and the east coast of the US would
take the brunt of the devastation, but high water could also submerge large
parts of the west coast of Britain.

Although the event may not happen for thousands of years, the scientists
think the government should take the issue at least as seriously as it has
the possibility of the Earth being struck by a large asteroid.

Early warning

Last month, Lord Sainsbury took delivery of an expert report on the threat
posed to our planet by so-called Near Earth Objects (NEOs). The report said
the UK should lead the way in creating an early warning system to help
defend the planet.

Dr Simon Day, of Benfield Greig Hazard research Centre, UCL, says the
western flank of the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma is unstable and could
collapse during a major eruption. This might send half a trillion tonnes of
rock crashing into the sea at once.

Modelling by colleagues in Switzerland shows that such a landslide could
trigger a so-called mega-tsunami, which has an initial wave height of 650
metres (2,130 feet) and moves out over the ocean at speeds up to 720 km/h
(450 mph).

By the time such a wave crossed the Atlantic, its power would have
diminished but it could still wreak havoc up to 20 kilometres (12 miles)
inland."

Just another possibility for Revelation 8:8 And the second angel sounded,
and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea. And
the third part of the sea became blood.

Explosion in Yemen: The Suspect List

Summary

With the attack on the USS Cole in Aden, Yemen, at least six
Americans have been killed, 35 have been wounded and a dozen
sailors are missing. In the hours since the attack, no terrorist
group has publicly claimed responsibility for the incident - and
none has denied it. But clues so far point to one of two groups:
one based in Egypt, another homegrown in Yemen. Both have ties to
Osama bin Laden.

Analysis

At least eight important terrorist groups are known to operate in
Yemen, a mix of both local groups and international organizations
with links elsewhere in the Arab world. Six at this point seem
unlikely to have conducted such a dramatic operation against a U.S.
naval combatant.

But two groups - one a local Yemeni group and another rooted in
Egypt -have motives, at least one has stated that it wants U.S.
forces out of Yemen, and both have strong links to Osama bin
Laden's Al Qaida organization. The local Yemeni organization, the
Islah Party has opposed the U.S. military's use of Yemen as a port.
With
the help of a militant wing, it has been involved in a long dispute
over
the U.S. presence and has warned against U.S. military use of the port
at Aden.

At the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Yemen is one of the poorest
nations in the Middle East and a lawless nation. The current
central government in Sanaa is weak and the country is torn by
tribal factionalism and a history of kidnapping foreigners,
especially Europeans and Americans.

So far no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. But the
list of active terrorist organizations in the country is
comparatively long. It includes: the Palestinian Hamas, the
Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the Egyptian Islamic Jihad and the
Egyptian al-Gama'at al-Islamiyya. In addition, the Algerian Armed
Islamic Group (GIA) operates in Yemen.

At this point, many of these seem unlikely to have conducted the
attack, particularly Palestinian organizations. Hamas has resorted
to suicide attacks but does not use Yemen as a major area of
operations. And the attack on the American target seems unlikely to
influence the besieged peace process. On the day of the attack, CIA
Director George Tenet met with Palestinian National Authority leader
Yasser Arafat.

Another Palestinian group, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) also
has
official representation in Yemen but seems unlikely to have conducted
the bombing. The PIJ has not been known to attack U.S. interests. The
Algerian GIA is extremely violent, but not known for suicide missions.

But an Egyptian group emerges as an important possible player -
either alone, or in concert with a local organization -- in this
drama. The Al-Gama'at al'Islamiyaa has the infrastructure and
network to conduct a significant strike. Al-Gama'at al-Islamiyya
(IG) also has members in Yemen. The group has opposed the U.S.
presence in the region because it helps support the Egyptian
government.

In addition to the IG, an important local organization emerges: the
Islah Party of Yemen. The party is an opposition group intent on
turning
the country into an Islamic state. Last year, the group issued a
warning
against the government's granting of military facilities to the U.S.
Navy. Nearly a year to the day of today's attack, a Yemeni newspaper
was
banned for reporting on an attempt by the Navy to use facilities at
Socotra, an island in the Indian Ocean, according to AFP.

One of the leaders of the Islah Party and its militant wing, Abdul
Majid Zandani, reportedly has close ties to Osama bin Laden, the
leader of Al Qaida. Both men reportedly served together in
Afghanistan fighting the Soviet occupation in the 1990s. In 1993,
Zandani also leads the militant wing and in 1993, condemned the
U.S. military's use of Aden as a base for operations in Somalia.
U.S. troops left Aden following the bombing of their hotels,
according to 1993 reports by Agence France Press.

At this point, a third group - again a local organization -seems a
more distant possibility than the Islah Party. The Army of Aden-
Abyan often targets American citizens and opposes the American
presence in the region. However, the group's operations generally
center on kidnapping. The group's leader, Zein al-Abideen al-
Mehdar, better known as Abu Hassan, was executed in 1999 for
participating in the December 1998 kidnapping of 16 Western
tourists -- even though Zandani called for Hassan's release. The
group emerged in 1997 but seems to be only a small player.

Islah and Zandani play an important role in Yemeni politics. The
political leader of the fundamentalist party, Sheik Abdallah bin
Hussein al-Ahmar acknowledged in 1998 that the group had ties to
the Egyptian fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, reported the
Mideast Mirror. Zandani himself has traveled to Sudan to meet with
the Sudanese Islamic leader Hassan Turabi, most notably during
Turabi's Islamic conference in 1997.

'Bomb attack' on British embassy in Yemen

SANAA, Yemen -- A powerful explosion, believed to have been
caused by a bomb, has rocked the British embassy in the Yemeni
capital, Sanaa.

British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said: "We believe a bomb of
some kind was flung over a wall.

"It was not a particularly professional attack, rather an
opportunistic one, and it seems to have landed on a diesel
generator and has caused quite a substantial explosion."

He said he "deplored" the attack.

Friday morning's blast, which comes a day after an attack on a
U.S. warship, shattered windows, but nobody was injured.

The explosion happened in a courtyard and shook the surrounding
area. Damage was also caused to an adjoining school and the
Dutch embassy.

Hisham al-Qubati, a secretary at the nearby Yemen Times
building, said: "I heard a loud explosion and rushed over to the
embassy.

"They wouldn't let us in, but I could see shattered windows and the
damage to a school next to the embassy."

An embassy spokeswoman at the scene said: "The explosion was
close to a generator. We sustained considerable damage to the
building itself."

The explosion occurred at 6.10 a.m. local time (0310 GMT), when
the building was unoccupied except for a night watchman.

A Foreign Office spokesman in London told CNN.com: "The
embassy was not occupied at the time of the blast, except for a
nightguard, who was not injured.

"We are not ruling out a terrorist attack and Scotland Yard and the
anti-terrorist branch have been informed."

Pentagon officials said they believed the explosion that ripped a
hole in the USS Cole, a navy destroyer, on Thursday was caused
by a terrorist attack.

At least six U.S. sailors were killed, 11 are missing and 35 were
wounded in the incident in the port of Aden.

U.S. officials said a pair of suspects steered a small boat loaded
with explosives alongside the ship in Yemen and stood to attention
as the small craft blew up.

BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - A 15-year-old boy who was barred from
school for wearing girls' clothing, including padded bras, wigs and
high heels, can return to class, a judge ruled. The student,
identified in court records as "Pat Doe," can also wear any clothing
or accessories that any other male or female student may wear,
Judge Linda Giles said Wednesday. South Junior High School had
forbidden the boy to attend school in female dress, calling it
disruptive. A school attorney said the student upset parents and
students and led to confrontations with classmates. On
Wednesday, the judge ruled the prohibition amounts to "the stifling
of a person's selfhood merely because it causes some members of
the community discomfort." The judge, who is a lesbian, added
that students need to be exposed to differences at an early age to

WASHINGTON (AP) - Congress voted Thursday to expand government
authority to bring criminal charges against those disclosing
classified materials. Critics warned of a chilling effect on the free
flow of information. The leaks provision was part of an intelligence
authorization bill that the House passed by voice and sent to the
White House for the president's expected signature. The Senate
approved it earlier Thursday by voice. Current law makes it a felony
to leak classified defense information that results in harm to
national security. Releasing other classified material that does not
directly harm national security has been dealt with through
administrative action such as job dismissal. See

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A jury awarded $6.5 million Thursday to
a music student who claimed that she remains emotionally
shattered more than a year after surviving an American Airlines
crash at Little Rock airport. Anna Lloyd, 22, cried as the verdict
was read. Eleven people, including the pilot, died in the crash on
June 1, 1999. Lloyd had sought $15 million, while lawyers for the
airline argued that $330,000 was sufficient. The airline said Lloyd
could recover with counseling. Lloyd told jurors Wednesday she
panicked as she tried to get out of the burning plane and thought
she would die. A psychiatrist treating her said she is depressed,
has suicidal thoughts, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder
and is not likely to be able to work. See

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - The Palestinian Authority on
Thursday released hundreds of prisoners, including senior Islamic
militants, as Israel rocketed Palestinian command centers in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip. The releases triggered a high alert in
Israel. "This is a grave act which increases the probability of terror
attacks," said Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. "The Palestinian
Authority, in violation of the agreements, released several top
Hamas and Islamic Jihad figures." Hamas and Islamic Jihad,
staunch opponents of peace with Israel, have carried out a series of
suicide bombings and shooting attacks that have claimed the lives

Cabinet approves more strikes if violence persists

The cabinet yesterday authorized Prime Minister Ehud Barak to
order further air force strikes against Palestinian Authority targets if
the violence in the territories continues.

The cabinet also retroactively gave Barak unanimous support for
his decision to strike at PA targets in response to yesterday's
murder of two IDF reservists by a Palestinian lynch mob in
Ramallah.

With these decisions, Israel has made it clear that the IDF's next
steps in the territories depend directly on the PA's behavior. Israel
Air Force attack helicopters struck five different Palestinian targets
in Ramallah and Gaza yesterday in retaliation for the brutal murder
of the two reservists, who mistakenly drove near Ramallah.

The murder, carried out by a Palestinian mob, was recorded on
television cameras, which clearly showed that Palestinian security
personnel participated in the act.

Helicopters also attacked the military academy in Jericho last night
in retaliation for the burning of the ancient synagogue in the city.

Israeli security sources said that communication with Palestinian
officials has virtually ceased and security coordination between the
two sides is nearly paralyzed. Contacts between the two sides are
currently limited to efforts to expedite setting up a summit.

The IDF has surrounded all Palestinian cities in the territories,
special forces have been assigned to roadblocks and tank units
have been posted along the roads in an effort to prevent further
attacks by the Palestinians.

Chief of Staff Shaul Mofaz and other security officials described the
circumstances of the murder in Ramallah to the cabinet and said
they are investigating reports that a third IDF soldier was also
murdered.

The officials also told the cabinet how the Palestinian targets were
chosen. They said the incitement broadcast by the Voice of
Palestine radio station, for instance, justified the attack on the
station's antennas.

Israel announced yesterday that those Palestinians who
participated in the murder of the two reservists in Ramallah will be
brought to justice. Transport Minister Amnon Lipkin-Shahak said
that "the state of Israel will close accounts with them."

A number of the participants in the attack were recorded by
television cameras at the Ramallah police station. In the past,
Israeli security services have been successful in gathering
intelligence information on members of Palestinian mobs who
attacked Israelis. Following a 1998 mob attack on an IDF soldier,
for instance, members of the mob were arrested months later when
they tried to exit Ramallah and were sentenced to long prison
terms.

The current warnings suggest that physical harm may be done to
those who participated in the lynching of the two IDF reservists.

Speaking on Channel 2 television, Lipkin-Shahak said: "We will
locate everyone who was there today. The State of Israel will close
accounts with them. It will take a day, a week, a year, but we will
close accounts with them."

Prime Minister Ehud Barak echoed the warnings during a press
conference at the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv.

The IDF's assessment is that the situation will escalate further
following Friday prayers in the mosques. An armed Palestinian
march in the direction of the Netzarim junction is planned in Gaza
today. Hamas is planning a mass prayer session at Joseph's Tomb
in Nablus today, and the IDF expects expects subsequent clashes
with the crowds at roadblocks.

Another lesson from the riots

Palestinian leaders claim that the current wave of disturbances will
not be the final chapter, and that similar clashes can be expected
in the future if Israel declines to restore the Palestinians' rights.
This is a policy of militancy on the part of the weak side. The
lessons are therefore important, and not simply as abstract history.
A few examples:.* In the strategic view of the Palestinians and
other Arab groups, there is an increasing feeling that they have hit
on the formula for bringing Israel to its knees. In the military
balance of power - conventional and nonconventional - Israel now
has the upper hand. But Israel does not, as they see it, have any
answer to an ongoing, low-level war that combines massive
terrorism, guerrilla warfare and the international media in a struggle
against the "Israeli Goliath" - a war into which the Arab minority in
Israel will be drawn. This strategy will expose Israel's Achilles' heel:
an extreme sensitivity to loss of life and the kidnapping of its
soldiers. As they read the situation, Israel's society is divided and
soft, and economic success is its paramount interest. Its days are
numbered, Akrameh Sabri, the mufti of Jerusalem, recently said.

* As evidence of the truthfulness of their claims, they cite the
accomplishments of the Intifada and Israel's withdrawal from
Lebanon following Hezbollah pressure, including the abandonment
of our ally, the South Lebanon Army. There is a direct connection,
they say, between the Intifada and the withdrawal from Lebanon
and the current wave of violence. Some commentators add to this
list last Saturday's pullback from Joseph's Tomb, under pressure
from the Palestinians' Tanzim militias.

* Now they are looking forward to watching Hezbollah as it reduces
Israel to a position of subservience in exchange for the release of
the three kidnapped soldiers. Hezbollah will demand the release of
Palestinian prisoners, Fatah and Hamas alike. This fits in nicely
with the Iranian viewpoint, which calls for Hezbollah to coordinate
its actions with Palestinian organizations such as Hamas and
Islamic Jihad. If Israel gives in to Hezbollah demands, it will
consolidate these two hostile fronts.

* It would be prudent to listen to the Palestinians that Israel had
thought of as pragmatic leaders prepared to make serious
compromises for peace. Not to the statements they give to CNN,
but to what they are telling the Palestinian public. After seizing
Joseph's Tomb and converting it into a mosque, Salah Ta'amri, a
member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and chairman of the
PLC's Lands Committee, said: "Now we have to kick the soldiers
out (of Rachel's Tomb) and restore the site to the city of
Bethlehem." At the same time, articles appeared in the press to
explain that Rachel's Tomb is actually a mosque (Billal bin
Rabbah) and that the area in fact belongs to the Muslim waqf.

* Abu Mazen, second in command to Arafat, has this to say: The
refugees will return to Israel, to the places from which they were
expelled in 1948, as has been proved by the "new historians" in
Israel. The refugees will receive compensation from Israel, not from
international funds. In explaining the source of the disturbances, he
commented that by creating the incidents, the Palestinians intend
to gain concessions from Israel in the negotiations. Who is naive
enough to believe that the Israelis would (of their own volition)
support a peace agreement that included such clauses?

* Israel's stubborn refusal to accept Arafat's call for an international
commission of inquiry is not final. It seems that Israel will agree to
such a committee, on condition that Israel knows who its members
are. But it would be a mistake to think Israel will be cleared, even if
the committee is controlled by the Americans. Regarding events
within the Green Line, in contrast, Israel's willingness to establish
an internal "inquiry committee" seems to be fading, and that is a
shame - as this would provide an opportunity to drain the pus from
an infected wound.

1. DISTURBANCES IN OLD CITY
Only Moslems of age 45 and up are being allowed to pray on the Temple
Mount today. The decision was made in order to avoid violent clashes
that, according to police information, the worshippers were intending to
initiate at today's prayers. Despite the precautions, a group of 150
Arabs attempted to break through police lines into the Temple Mount
today. The police, who are deployed massively throughout the Old City,
used force to prevent them from entering. Excerpts from the Moslem
sermon in a central Gaza mosque today, and broadcast live over
Palestinian television: "The Jews are the true enemies... They must
therefore be killed!"

A group of Palestinians held a prayer service outside Damascus Gate, and
then began throwing bottles and objects; the police are attempting to
disperse them. Disturbances were reported at other Old City gates as
well.

Jerusalem rabbis have called upon the public to arrive at the Western
Wall for holiday prayers - the week-long holiday of Sukkot begins
tonight - and not to abandon the holy site.

2. ANCIENT JERICHO SYNAGOGUE SET ABLAZE BY PALESTINIANS
A mob of Palestinian Arabs from Jericho set the ancient "Shalom Al
Yisrael" synagogue on fire last night, and the wood structure was burnt
to the ground. Palestinians prevented Israeli fire trucks from putting
out the fire. About two hours later, the Israel Air Force bombed a
Palestinian Authority police academy building in Jericho, in
retaliation. Early this morning, the Air Force bombed targets in
Shechem as well. A French news agency reports that Israel Air Force
planes circled targets in Lebanon this morning.

Minister of Diaspora Affairs Rabbi Michael Melchior (Meimad) told Israel
Radio today that the mistake of Oslo was that Israel did not do enough
to stop the Palestinian Authority's continuing and intense incitement to
hatred of Israel, to the extent that was reflected in the brutal
lynching of the two Israeli soldiers by the crazed Palestinian mob.

3. REACTIONS TO THE ANCIENT-SYNAGOGUE BURNING
"A Palestinian Authority that burns people by day, and synagogues at
night, has no right to exist." So said former MK Chanan Porat, who was
very active on behalf of maintaining a Jewish presence at the site over
the past few years, to Arutz-7 last night. "We must know that our
mission today is to put an end to this body, and to return to all of
Eretz Yisrael and its holy sites. I have no doubt that we will have to
return to Jericho and Shechem, because if not, these places will
continue to serve as bases from which the murderers will shoot at us..."
MK Benny Elon called on the government to retaliate for the desecration
of yet another holy Jewish site by bombing the nearby Palestinian
Authority casino. "We must hit Arafat in his pocket," Elon said, "which
will make more of a dent in him than all the Palestinian children that
he sends to be killed."

Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau recalled that after the NRP's Chanan Porat
and Chaim Falk turned to him almost seven years ago on the matter of the
Jewish site in Jericho, "I turned to then-Prime Minister Rabin, and he
promised that a yeshiva would be allowed to operate there. He later came
back to me with a letter showing a special clause in the Oslo I
agreement, stipulating that a 'Jewish spiritual center' would operate
there, and that Israelis would be allowed to travel back and forth."

Yisrael Medad, member of the Executive Board of the Shalom Al Yisrael
Synagogue - the name comes from the words that appear on the ancient
mosaic floor there - released the following statement: "The act of
senseless vandalism that is the destruction of the Shalom Al Yisrael
Synagogue in Jericho, stoked by evil minds and fed by a cruel hatred,
will be answered. The 1,250-year old mosaic floor will be restored to
the best of our ability, and Jewish prayers and sounds of Torah learning
will again be heard in the city that was the first of the conquests of
Joshua in the Land of Israel."

4. BARAK ATTEMPTING TO EXPAND GOVERNMENT
A national-emergency government is apparently in formation, although
many questions remain unanswered. Prime Minister Barak will meet with
heads of most of the Knesset factions today. The Meretz party announced
that it would not yet respond to Barak's invitation to join such a
government, as it is not yet clear what its diplomatic policies will be.
The planned government will not involve the distribution of portfolios
- too complex a task for the short time available - but is scheduled to
include almost all the parties of the Knesset. It was agreed that the
government would be formed for the period of a month - during which time
issues such as the secular revolution would be frozen - and would then
be reconsidered in light of the circumstances.

5. WORLD JEWRY IN SUPPORT OF ISRAEL
Major pro-Israel rallies were held in some 60 American and Canadian
cities yesterday. Thousands of Jews rallied in New York, Toronto,
Chicago, Winnipeg, Memphis, and other places. Another major rally is
planned for Washington this afternoon. Attacks on Jews by Arabs were
reported yesterday in Chicago and Belgium.

The rally in New York was attended by tens of thousands of
people. Speakers included organizers Malcolm Hoenlein and Michael
Miller, as well as New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Governor Pataki,
Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert, Senatorial candidates Hillary Clinton (the
only one who was booed, according to the Washington Post) and Rick
Lazio, former NY Mayor Ed Koch, Charles Bronfman, Joseph Herman (the
brother of an American who was savagely beaten along with his wife by a
Palestinian Arab mob in Israel), and Elie Wiesel. Lazio quoted
columnist William Safire in yesterday's New York Times, who wrote,
"Israel does not need a broker in a hostile world; Israel needs an
ally."

6. ISRAEL ON THE ALERT
Israel is on heavy alert for likely Palestinian attempts to commit
terrorist attacks, in light of the new-found freedom of Hamas terrorists
from PA prisons, and promises by Hamas leaders to "avenge" today's
bombings of Ramallah and Gaza. The Jews of Yesha - Judea, Samaria, and
Gaza - were instructed by the army not to travel on the roads last
night. Senior PA figure Marwan Bargouti, head of the Tanzim
quasi-military force, said that his organization would step up the
"intifada," and that it would be escalated in the days ahead.

Palestinians continued shooting at Israeli targets last night in several
locations in Yesha, including Hevron throughout the night. Israeli
helicopters responded in some of the instances.

7. THE LYNCHED SOLDIERS
The names of the two lynched soldiers were released late last night: Wt.
Officer Vadim Norzitch, 33, from Or Akiva, and Yosef Avrahami, 38, of
Petach Tikvah. The wife of Yosef Avrahami said that she called his
cellular phone when she heard the news of the disturbance in Ramallah;
the man who answered said, "I just killed your husband." The funeral of
Vadim Norzitch, who was married one week ago, will be held today. Yosef
Avrahami will be buried on Sunday. Arafat said that he ordered the
arrest of the Palestinians who participated in yesterday's lynch.
Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein responded that he has no trust in
Arafat's promises.

8. SHARANSKY ACCUSES WORLD
Former refusenik and present-day MK Natan Sharansky, in an article
entitled "Afraid of the Truth," in the Washington Post yesterday, wrote,
"Today the nations of the free world also prefer to close their eyes to

the truth in the Middle East in general and the Arab-Israeli conflict in
particular... Some, who see Palestinian stone throwers as David to
Israel's Goliath, are again duped by the manipulations of a brutal
dictator who sends children to the front lines to achieve through
tragedy what he cannot achieve through diplomacy. But most people are
not so easily duped. They simply choose to blindfold themselves rather
than confront a discomforting truth... When the peace process began,
Israel and the West had a remarkable opportunity to use their influence
to ensure that the emerging Palestinian society could evolve into a
liberal, democratic state. Instead they spent the better part of 10
years subsidizing tyranny... No doubt a government that is prepared to
make far-reaching and dangerous concessions will soon be pressed to make
more, so that the free states can remain safely behind their

9. IRAQI FORCES NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY
U.S. intelligence sources indicated that Iraq was on its way to
deploying an armored division of hundreds of tanks westward, towards the
border with Jordan. Israel is the next country over from Jordan. The
Americans believe that it is just a symbolic gesture of support for the
Palestinians, as the division was moving with "no logistics supply line
behind it." A senior American official told CNN, "It looks to be all
diplomatic show."

Dr. Aaron Lerner of IMRA, speaking on Arutz-7 last night, said that the
Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty prohibits the countries from "allowing
the entry, stationing and operating on their territory, or through it,
of military forces, personnel or materiel of a third party, in
circumstances which may adversely prejudice the security of the other
Party."

I've been quiet since Israel erupted in fighting spurred by disputes
over the Temple Mount.

Until now, I haven't even bothered to say, "See, I told you so." But I
can't resist any longer. I feel compelled to remind you of the
column I wrote just a couple weeks before the latest uprising.
Yeah, folks, I predicted it. that's OK. Hold your applause.

After all, I wish I had been wrong. More than 80 people have been
killed since the current fighting in and around Jerusalem began.
And for what?

If you believe what you read in most news sources, Palestinians
want a homeland and Muslims want control over sites they
consider holy. Simple,right?

Well, as an Arab-American journalist who has spent some time in
the Middle East dodging more than my share of rocks and mortar
shells, I've got to tell you that these are just phony excuses for the
rioting, trouble-making and land-grabbing.

Isn't it interesting that prior to the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, there was
no serious movement for a Palestinian homeland?

"Well, Farah," you might say, "that was before the Israelis seized
the West Bank and Old Jerusalem."

That's true. In the Six-Day War, Israel captured Judea, Samaria
and East Jerusalem. But they didn't capture these territories from
Yasser Arafat. They captured them from Jordan's King Hussein. I
can't help but wonder why all these Palestinians suddenly
discovered their national identity after Israel won the war.

The truth is that Palestine is no more real than Never-Never Land.
The first time the name was used was in 70 A.D. when the
Romans committed genocide against the Jews, smashed the
Temple and declared the land of Israel would be no more. From
then on, the Romans promised, it would be known as Palestine.
The name was derived from the Philistines, a Goliathian people
conquered by the Jews centuries earlier. It was a way for the
Romans to add insult to injury. They also tried to change the name
of Jerusalem to Aelia Capitolina, but that had even less staying
power.

Palestine has never existed -- before or since -- as an autonomous
entity. It was ruled alternately by Rome, by Islamic and Christian
crusaders, by the Ottoman Empire and, briefly, by the British after
World War I. The British agreed to restore at least part of the land
to the Jewish people as their homeland.

There is no language known as Palestinian. There is no distinct
Palestinian culture. There has never been a land known as
Palestine governed by Palestinians. Palestinians are Arabs,
indistinguishable from Jordanians (another recent invention),
Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis, etc. Keep in mind that the Arabs control
99.9 percent of the Middle East lands. Israel represents one-tenth
of 1 percent of the landmass.

But that's too much for the Arabs. They want it all. And that is
ultimately what the fighting in Israel is about today. Greed. Pride.
Envy. Covetousness. No matter how many land concessions the
Israelis make, it will never be enough.

What about Islam's holy sites? There are none in Jerusalem.

Shocked? You should be. I don't expect you will ever hear this
brutal truth from anyone else in the international media. It's just not
politically correct.

I know what you're going to say: "Farah, the Al Aqsa Mosque and
the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem represent Islam's third most
holy sites."

Not true. In fact, the Koran says nothing about Jerusalem. It
mentions Mecca hundreds of times. It mentions Medina countless
times. It never mentions Jerusalem. With good reason. There is no
historical evidence to suggest Mohammad ever visited Jerusalem.

So how did Jerusalem become the third holiest site of Islam?
Muslims today cite a vague passage in the Koran, the seventeenth
Sura, entitled "The Night Journey." It relates that in a dream or a
vision Mohammed was carried by night "from the sacred temple to
the temple that is most remote, whose precinct we have blessed,
that we might show him our signs. ..." In the seventh century,
some Muslims identified the two temples mentioned in this verse
as being in Mecca and Jerusalem. And that's as close as Islam's
connection with Jerusalem gets -- myth, fantasy, wishful thinking.
Meanwhile, Jews can trace their roots in Jerusalem back to the
days of Abraham.

The latest round of violence in Israel erupted when Likud Party
leader Ariel Sharon tried to visit the Temple Mount, the foundation
of the Temple built by Solomon. It is the holiest site for Jews.
Sharon and his entourage were met with stones and threats. I
know what it's like. I've been there. Can you imagine what it is like
for Jews to be threatened, stoned and physically kept out of the
holiest site in Judaism?

So what's the solution to the Middle East mayhem? Well, frankly, I
don't think there is a man-made solution to the violence. But, if
there is one, it needs to begin with truth. Pretending will only lead
to more chaos. Treating a 5,000-year-old birthright backed by
overwhelming historical and archaeological evidence equally with
illegitimate claims, wishes and wants gives diplomacy and
peacekeeping a bad name.

Prime Minister Barak has kept this quiet because of the sensitive
nature of the Temple Mount.

IDF to provide soldiers with video cameras to document events

Ha'aretz Service

The Israeli Defense Force plans to provide front-line soldiers in the
West Bank with video cameras, so they can record the events they
witness. The IDF spokesman, Brigadier General Ron Kitri, said in
an interview on Channel 2 that the images the soldiers would
record would show the events to the public from an Israeli point of
view. He said that video cameras had been purchased and will be
distributed to IDF forces located in areas of great tension.

               reported last night that Palestinian Authority Chairman
               Yasser Arafat is on the verge of unilaterally declaring an
               independent Palestinian state.

               The reports quoted Palestinian sources in Lebanon as
               saying that Arafat is expected to make the declaration
               within the next 24 hours. There was no confirmation from
               other sources.

               Last night, Fatah called upon Palestinians to volunteer for
               the newly-founded Palestinian militias, a Palestinian
               security source said.

(IsraelWire-10/13) NEVE YAAKOV =96 An Israeli motorist sustained
light injuries on Friday when his truck was attacked by stone-
throwers in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Neve Yaakov.
His injuries were described as light. Police extricated the motorist
from the incident and he was transported to Hadassah Hospital in
Ein Kerem, Jerusalem. A helicopter was ordered into the air in the
hope of apprehending the attackers.

2) FUNERAL OF LYNCHING VICTIM - Vadim Nourezitz, 33, of Or
Akiva, who was murdered in Ramallah on Thursday, was laid to
rest a short time ago. Thousands turned out to pay their last
respects. The second victim, Yosef Avrahami, 38, of Petah Tikvah,
will be interred on Sunday at 3:30pm, in the Segula Cemetery.

3) NEGOTIATING EFFORTS - Contacts between Jerusalem and
the White House continue at this hour in the hope of arranging a
summit between Israel and the PLO Authority. At this time, there
are no reports of any significant progress. PA officials are expected
to issue a formal statement later in the day indicating if they are
willing to participate in another summit.

4) FRIDAY PRAYERS CANCELED AT JOSEPH=92S TOMB =96 PA
officials report the dome of Joseph=92s Tomb has been painted white,
covering the green paint applies earlier in the week, the color
associated with mosques. Following pressure of the governor of
Nablus and the PA, Hamas agreed to cancel the planned Islamic
prayer service at the Jewish holy site according to an Israel Radio
report. PA officials insist the site is not being converted into a
mosque and the renovations were done to restore the holy site to
its original status prior to the Arab mob destroying it last week.

5) DAMASCUS GATE =96 Two border policemen were injured in
Friday stone-throwing attacks at the Damascus Gate to the Old
City of Jerusalem. Jerusalem District Commander Yair Yitzhaki
arrived on the scene and gave the order to stop pursuing the stone-
throwers. The area is quiet at this time.

6) KIRYAT MOTZKIN =96 Police arrested three Jewish residents after
they attacked an Arab delivery person, injuring him lightly and
damaging his vehicle. Police expect to make more arrests in the
case.

     CHARACTERISTICS OF THEIR CHILDREN
     Researchers to Present Amazing Discovery

     MILAN, SEP 5 (ZENIT.org). - Mothers undergo permanent
     changes during pregnancy, in which they "inherit" some
     characteristics of the child they carry and, through the
     child, also receive some characteristics of the father.

     This is but one of the surprising discoveries to be
     presented at the congress entitled "At the Dawn of
     Human Life," organized by the Institute of Gynecology
     and Obstetrics of the Catholic University of Rome. The
     congress begins Sept. 6 in the Vatican, as part of the
     Jubilee of University Professors.

     The child inherits half of his genetic patrimony from the
     mother. He also "hears" the outside world while in the
     womb, through the mother's body, a fact which
     substantially conditions the unborn child's life. Now,
     research indicates that the mother also undergoes
     long-term changes caused by the "person" of the child
     and, indirectly, also from her husband.

     Professor Salvatore Mancuso, head of the gynecology
     institute, said: "We have proofs that beginning in the fifth
     week of gestation, in other words, when a woman realizes
     she is pregnant, an infinite number of messages pass
     from the embryo to the mother, through chemical
     substances like hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. Such
     information serves to adapt the mother's organism to the
     presence of the new being.

     "Moreover, it has also been discovered that the embryo
     sends stem cells that, thanks to the mother's immune
     system tolerance, colonize the maternal medulla, and
     adhere to it. What is more, lymphocytes are born from
     here and remain with the woman for the rest of her life."
     Mancuso continued: "From the fifth week there is clearly a
     passing of cells, but messages begin at conception. Even
     during the first phase of cellular subdivision, when the
     embryo is moving in the fallopian tubes, there are
     transmissions through contact with tissues touched by the
     moving embryo.

     "Later, after implantation in the uterus, the dialogue is
     more intense through the blood and cells, and chemical
     substances enter the mother's bloodstream.

     "Finally, the child's stem cells pass to the mother in great
     quantity, both at the moment of birth, whether
     spontaneous or Caesarean, as well as at the time of
     abortion, whether spontaneous or voluntary. These cells
     are implanted in the mother's medulla and produce
     lymphocytes, which have a common origin with the cells of
     the central nervous system; they have receptors for the
     neurotransmitters and can make messages pass that the
     maternal nervous system understands."

     He added, "An astonishing area of research is opening
     up. This is information of enormous importance on the
     first phases of life."

     When asked whether it was difficult to make rigid divisions
     of the phases of the embryo's development, Mancuso
     said, "It is a grave error to make distinctions between the
     embryo and pre-embryo. It is such an initial phase - one
     cannot of course speak of a central nervous system - but
     the messages the embryo sends to the mother express
     manifestations that are proper to the human species. The
     instruments used are highly specialized chemical
     substances and cells, such as stem cells.

     "It should be remembered that if communication was
     lacking, the maternal organ would reject the embryo. The
     dialogue makes possible the perfect acceptance of an
     organism that is 50% foreign to the mother's genetic
     patrimony. In fact, these chemical substances, which
     express nutritional and metabolic needs of the embryo to
     the mother, cause an immune depression in her that
     facilitates the acceptance of the new being."

     When asked how long the fetus' influence on the mother
     lasts, the professor answered: "Stem cells have been
     found in the mother even 30 years after the birth. It could
     be said, therefore, the pregnancy does not last the 40
     canonical weeks, but the woman's entire life.

     "This should be cause for reflection also in regard to the
     hypothesis of 'renting' a womb: In this case, the mother
     who carries the embryo accepts a being whose genetic
     patrimony is 100% foreign, and who will 'modify' her for
     the rest of her life. We have no idea of the long-term
     consequences of such operations.

     Regarding the transfer of the father's characteristics to
     the mother via the unborn child, Mancuso said, "These
     are areas that are yet to be explored. Of course it calls
     for reflection on a new way of understanding pregnancy.
     Also, a very close tie is undoubtedly created between
     man and woman, because the child has 50% of the
     father's genetic characteristics. Moreover, the
     hematopoietic [blood-producing] stem cells go to the
     medulla and produce offspring cells, lymphocytes and
     neurotransmitters with the capacity to dialogue with the
     maternal central nervous system. It is somewhat as
     though the 'thoughts' of the child pass to the mother,
     even many years after his birth."
