Hi,
This discussion raises some interesting issues.

I personally hold an open mind on the question of if the physical temple in
Jerusalem will be rebuilt. I suspect an attempt will be made to do so.

Again I am of the opinion that we should fall back on 1 Cor 15:46 "First the
natural then the spiritual". I suspect that most of the prophecies have a
dual fulfillment - a literal return of Israel to the land and a literal
rebuilidng of the temple and this parallels a restoration of the church to
its inheritance and a "rebuilding" of the true temple of God.

This previous writer quotes several NT scriptures to indicate that the true
temple of God is the church and that Christ is the end of sacrifice. To this
I agree, but that does not necessarily nullify an attempt to rebuild the
temple by faithful Jews. Ineed the question would then be: What could they
use it for if Christ has made an end to sacrifice?
This of course is not an issue to faithful Jews who do not believe Christ
has made an end to sacrifice. But to Chrisitans it is. We may have to
conclude that a temple will be rebuilt or at leasr a start made on it, but
in the final analysis it is not recommissioned and sacrifices are not made
because of the coming of the Lord. I tend to this idea.

On the question of a double fulfilment to many of the prophecies:
I have done considerable study in Revelation and related OT prophecies. My
own feeling is that many of the prophecies are difficult to interpret if we
take either a simple literal meaning or a straight symbolic meaning. But the
inner contradictions are often removed if we assume a double fulfillment -
one in the nation of Israel, another in the church. Then it is simply a case
of realising that some statements apply to one group or the other.

In the final analysis I think God will resolve it all in this way: My own
belief - which I think I can justify scripturally but will not do so now -
is that in the last days the whole remaining alive nation of Israel will be
saved just before the second coming. With this event the complications are
removed - no longer are there "Two" peoples of God - a natural and a
spiritual so to speak - but there will be at the Lords coming only those who
are his - i.e. Christians. The seed of Abrahem according to promise.

All of this is probably quite controversial in some ways but the whole
discussion rasies some interesting points which I am keen to hear others on.
I will thus be silent for now to hear what others say.

Judge: S.F. Had 'Duty' to Stop Ads

The ads proclaimed hope for homosexuals, but a federal judge said San
Francisco had a "duty" to call them hate speech. The city's Board of
Supervisors even claimed the ads were partially responsible for the death of
Matthew Shepard and hostility toward gays.

"Truth in Love" was an ad campaign, sponsored by several Christian
organizations, that proclaimed homosexuals can change.

"The dream that I thought could never happen -- having a wife and kids -- has
finally come true," said one of the ads. "If you're hurting, lonely or confused,
Jesus can set you free."

The city of San Francisco concluded the ads contributed to "horrible crimes
committed against gays and lesbians," and city officials asked local TV
stations not to run them.

In response, pro-family groups -- the American Family Association, the
Family Research Council and Kerusso Ministries -- filed a lawsuit in October
1999 to stop the Board of Supervisors from issuing similar resolutions in the
future.

Earlier this month, however, a federal judge ruled the city was only doing its
"duty" to address concerns for "public safety."

"Nothing like this has ever happened in this country," said Brian Fahling, with
the American Family Association's Center for Law and Policy. "This, really,
is extraordinary and should give everybody great pause, because now we
have a court decision -- a federal court decision -- that says governments can
take official action condemning religious beliefs."

Added Yvette Schneider, with the Family Research Council: "There are
people who are not happy with their homosexual lifestyles and need to hear
that there is a way out."

Schneider called the San Francisco action symptomatic of a cultural shift in
America that is "scary and threatening," especially, she said, "as Christians
who believe what the Bible says -- that homosexuality is a sin . . . that
people can leave any sinful lifestyle."

The groups plan to appeal the judge's ruling.

Democracy goes global on the 'Net

- The world is about to embark on what amounts to the
first global mass election, an unprecedented experiment in
democracy in which hundreds of millions of ordinary folks
from all corners of the Earth can vote.

If you're 16 or older and have an e-mail address, you are
eligible to vote for what passes for the only entity with
management power over the chaotic cyber-world of the
Internet. And, depending on the outcome of a meeting next
month, you may even be able to nominate yourself as a
candidate.

The election's purpose is to fill five at-large seats on
the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or
ICANN, an obscure 19-member board in charge of the "domain
address system" that organizes the millions of World Wide
Web sites so users can find them. ICANN was set up in 1998.

"The stage is set ... to pioneer the procedures for
holding open and democratic elections on an international
basis in the new online world of the Internet," Scott
Harshbarger, president of the public-interest group Common
Cause, said earlier this year in describing the import of
what is about to occur.

Registration to vote is open until July 31, with the
election itself slated to occur from Sept. 20 to Oct. 1.
Signing up is simple and free, and can be done at ICANN's
Web site (http://www.icann.org) or at independent sites
such as that of the Center for Democracy and Technology, a
Washington watchdog group (http://www.cdt.org/action/icann).

At first blush, the focus of the Internet's management
board may appear arcane at best. Its primary job is to
decide which domain names - the .com, .net, .org, .edu or
gov designations that are part of every Internet address -
should be used, resolve trademark disputes over domain
names, and control the number of addresses.

"If you imagine the Internet as a city with finite
borders, ICANN acts as the zoning authority who (CQ) hands
out parcels of property to interested parties," according
to the Center for Democracy and Technology, the group
concerned with protecting civil liberties in cyberspace.

But to some Internet-watchers, the Internet Corporation is
anything but a benign board that helps organize the largely
anarchic venue. Not only does the board already hold
extraordinary behind-the-scenes sway over the Internet but
it also looms as a body that could easily evolve into a
powerful regulator at the beck and call of special
interests, according to this view.

"Control over this system (is) quite literally a kind of
life-or-death power over everyone participating in this
vast global conversation," said David Post, a cyberspace
law professor at Temple University Law School and co-editor
of ICANNWatch, an online watchdog group
(http://www.icannwatch.org).

The very obscurity of the board and its operation leaves
it open to becoming a means by which companies, industries,
governments or countries can "impose their particular
vision on Internet users worldwide," Post said.

To counter that, he and other critics say, the Internet
Corporation needs individuals on its board who are
committed to representing the public interest. That's why
the coming election represents a critical moment in the
future of the Internet.

"There needs to be more public voice in what now is
largely dominated by corporate interests," said Alan
Davidson, staff counsel for the democracy and technology
center. To amplify that message, his group and several
others Wednesday kicked off a voter registration drive.
Their work is cut out for them - so far, only about 20,000
people have registered.

Under board rules, one at-large member will be elected for
two-year terms from each of five geographical regions -
Africa, Asia/Australia/Pacific, Europe, Latin
America/Caribbean Islands, and North America. An Internet
Corporation meeting July 16 in Japan will decide whether
and how individuals can nominate themselves for the ballot.
The final slate of candidates won't be known until Aug. 20.

Already, some countries have begun to marshal voters in
order to help their chance of gaining a seat on the board
for someone from their shores.

Japan has launched a mass registration push. So has the
popular German news magazine Der Spiegel, which is drumming
up interest by casting the election as a chance to boost
German influence worldwide.

Inmate Goes to Court Over Right to Father Child

LONDON (Reuters) - A convicted murderer took the British government to
court Thursday to challenge a decision to stop him from fathering a child
through artificial insemination while in prison.

Lawyers for 29-year-old Gavin Mellor, who has served five years of a life jail
term for murdering a pensioner, told the High Court that Home Secretary
Jack Straw's 1998 ruling denied both Mellor and his 25-year-old wife Tracey
basic rights.

The case is believed to be the first time a prisoner has taken legal action
against the government over the right to parenthood via artificial insemination.

``Whether Mr. and Mrs Mellor should bring a child into the world is a matter
for them and not a matter for the Secretary of State,'' Mellor's lawyer David
Pannick QC told the court.

``Mrs Mellor is an ordinary member of society,'' he added. ''The decision
impacts on her as well as her husband. We say that is a factor which should
be taken into account.''

Mellor married his former prison service worker wife three years ago while in
prison, and the couple fear she could be too old to conceive a child by the
time he is released -- in seven years' time at the earliest.

In his 1998 ruling, Straw refused Mellor's request saying he was concerned
over how stable his marriage was, given that ``it did not exist before your
imprisonment and has not been tested under normal circumstances.''

Syrians say talks could restart in August

For the second time in a week official sources in Damascus were quoted
yesterday as saying talks with Israel could resume in August.

Writing for the Lebanese newspaper a-Nahar, Syrian journalist T'ana al-
Amam quoted official Damascus sources expressing optimism on the
chance of resuming peace talks with Israel as early as August.

According to the sources, the resumption is conditional on Prime Minister
Ehud Barak accepting that President Bashar Assad will stand firm on Syria's
territorial demands, "especially on the return of Syria to the north-eastern
shore of the Kinneret." However, the sources added that "the question of
water will remain open for discussion."

The officials said recent Syrian efforts to raise the standard of living, lower
unemployment and strengthen the national economy "are intended to
strengthen Syrian society ahead of the external challenges created by
peace."

According to the sources, in the next few months 92,000 jobs will be created
in state institutions and administrations that were frozen by the previous
government.

To improve Syria's image and financial appeal, the fight against corruption
will continue. Three parliament members and several senior army officers
suspected of corruption are expected to be investigated and stand trial soon,
the sources said.

In the past week, Syrian media have renewed calls for Israel to renew peace
talks - these increased as President Bashar Assad and Foreign Minister
Farouq Shara said Damascus is willing to resume talks "at any moment."

Last week, the Syrian newspaper al-Hayat reported that U.S. Secretary of
State Madeleine Albright would arrive in Damascus on July 25 for talks with
Bashar Assad and the Syrian leadership on the possibility of renewed talks.
Official sources told the newspaper that at the end of May and beginning of
June the U.S. administration presented compromise proposals to Damascus
"that were good for both sides."

The Syrians actually began expressing optimism already in the middle of
May, saying that a breakthrough in the peace process was expected in
"coming weeks" Sources then noted that an agreement could be reached
regarding the north-eastern shore of the Kinneret without compromising
Israel's water requirements

Rabbinate asked to let Jews on Mount

The Council of the Chief Rabbinate will meet on Monday following an appeal
from rabbis and political figures to relax the accepted halachic ruling that
prohibits Jews from entering the Temple Mount for reasons related to
"impurity" in Jewish tradition.

The last time the council was asked to rule on the subject - in 1994 following
the peace agreement with Jordan - Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau
stated firmly that halacha forbidding Jews from entering the site could not be
revised because of changed political circumstances.

Following reports on an forthcoming agreement concerning the Temple
Mount, and the possibility that the Palestinian Authority will get formal
control, sovereignty, a corridor, and perhaps the right to hoist the Palestinian
flag over the site, the political right has stepped up its pressure on the chief
rabbis to change their ruling.

A number of rabbis in Judea and Samaria changed their views on this
halachic issue a few years ago, allowing their students to go up to the
Temple Mount following the changes in the political circumstances.

MK Benny Elon recently sent the chief rabbis a letter saying: "Today we can
no longer ignore that fact that State of Israel and the police have given
Muslims de facto sovereignty over the Temple Mount, where they brazenly
violate the law, and declare that the Temple Mount has no religious
significance to the Jewish people. We ask for a ruling from the chief
rabbinate that would require observant Jews to visit the Temple Mount, or at
least those areas in its environs which are permitted by all accounts, or in
certain places following immersion in a ritual bath, if you indeed rule so, or in
any other way that would ensure a continued Jewish religious presence on
the site."

Director of the Antiquities Authority Amir Drori yesterday appeared before a
special meeting in the prime minister's office on the subject. He said "any
work conducted on the Temple Mount means the destruction of rare and
important archaeological artifacts, and if work is authorized, it must be of a
minor nature only, certainly not a path 12 meters wide from Solomon's
Stables to the Mercy Gate. Under no circumstances should trucks and
bulldozers be allowed to move freely on the site."

Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein voiced his opposition to the continued
paving "because it is part of much broader projects. The supervision on the
mount is no longer effective. The claim of 'wishing to avoid bloodshed' as an
excuse for not enforcing the law has already exhausted itself in the courts,"
said Rubinstein.

Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert said police should take measured steps to
enforce the law and restore Israeli control over it. He added that there is no
safety supervision over the works either.

Ministers Yossi Beilin, Shlomo Ben-Ami minimized the extent of the
archaeological damage, claiming that the organization of archaeologists and
the Committee for the Prevention of Damage to Antiquities was politically
motivated, a claim which Drori firmly denied.

Vatican proposes open channel for talks with Israel

Officials at the Vatican are proposing that a permanent mechanism for
consultations between the Vatican and Israel be set in place to examine in
advance decisions that might arouse emotional responses on the part of one
side or the other. The proposal came up yesterday at a meeting of the Forum
for Inter-Religious Dialogue headed by Government Secretary Yitzhak
Herzog.

The forum was set up following Pope John Paul II's visit to Israel, and
convened yesterday for the first time at the Jerusalem Van Leer Institute.
Among the participants was the Papal Nuncio to Israel, Archbishop Pietro
Sambi.

The idea for the "hot line" like mechanism was first proposed in the wake of
criticism expressed by Rabbi David Rosen, the Director of the Anti-
Defamation League in Israel, about the Pope's plan to beatify Pope Pius IX -
and to do so on the same day that he canonizes Pope John XXIII, who
established the first ecunemical conference with the Jews, winning the heart
of worldwide Jewry.

The 19th century Pope Pius IX is known by Jews for his role in the
kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, one of eight children of a Jewish family. He
was secretly baptized, when he was ill, by the Catholic servant who worked
in the Mortara home. On June 23, 1858, when he was 6 years old, the
Vatican Guard came to his home and forcibly separated him from his parents
to give him a Christian education. Canonical law at the time required the
church to take responsibility for all baptized children.

All attempts to have the child returned to his family, including the intervention
of Sir Moses Montefiore, failed. Pius IX said that the pleadings by the Jews
were an anti-Catholic conspiracy. He took Mortara under his wing and made
him his protege. Mortara became a Catholic priest and eventually changed
his name to Pius Mortara.

Rabbi Rosen said yesterday that it was not "up to the Jews" to tell the
Catholic Church whom it should canonize, but if the church is sincere in its
desire to embark on a new era of dialogue and mutual respect, in which it will
be sensitive to the Jews, "there must be a kind of dialogue in which they are
aware of our sensitivities and consult with us."

He said that the intention to canonize Pius IX on the same day as Pope John
XXIII (September 3, 2000) constitutes an injury, "First of all to the status of
Pope John XXIII and secondly to us, as they are bringing Pope Pius IX, who
forced baptism, in through the back door."

At yesterday's conference, church sources stressed the need to bring Pope
John Paul II's message of reconciliation between Christianity and Judaism to
the rest of the ranks of the church. They said that meetings should be held
inboth Israel and in Rome of all the bishops involved in relations with Israel to
discuss the question of how to turn the Pope's position into the attitude of
the church as a whole.

Jordan issues a threat over Temple Mount

Fri Jun 30,2000 -- Jordanian officials affiliated with the committee in
Jerusalem overseeing the Temple Mount have issued a statement on Thursday
that any Israeli attempt to change the status quo of the Mount would be
interpreted as a declaration of “religious war”. Jordanian officials were
critical of websites set up condemning the illegal Wakf Islamic Trust
construction, calling them incitement to violence, adding that no attempt

PA voices increase on threats for war

Fri Jun 30,2000 -- Fraih Abu Meddain, who holds the justice portfolio in
the PLO Authority (PA), responded to statements by senior IDF commanders
that that a unilateral declaration of statehood by Arafat would result in
the immediate breakdown of the Oslo process and the cessation of talks and
that while both sides would lose, Israel would maintain the upper hand and
respond immediately and appropriately. Meddain�s statements were aired on
Israel Radio in Arabic, and were translated as follows:

We are warning the Israeli generals that Palestinian blood is not cheap.
Just as there is a way to Gaza, Ramallah, Nablus and Khan Yunis, there is
also a way to Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheba. If Israel wishes that the
Middle East be destroyed, so be it!

IDF refuses to supply weaponry for self defense of Yesha communities

Fri Jun 30,2000 -- According to the head of the Kiryat Arba Local Council,
a request for ten M-60 heavy machineguns, known in the IDF as “Mags”, was
rejected by military officials. He explained the weapons were requested to
be added to the community�s arsenal, anticipating an Islamic offensive in
the future based on briefings from members of the intelligence and
security communities. He said that to make things worse, not only is the
military rejecting requests for additional weapons, weapons in the
possession of many IDF reservists living in Yesha communities are being
confiscated.

Barak called to reveal his negotiating position

Fri Jun 30,2000 -- Likud opposition party MK Limor Livnat is demanding
that Prime Minister Ehud Barak address the Knesset and reveal his position
vis-�- vis negotiations with the PA. Livnat has obtained the necessary
forty MK signatures to compel Barak to appear before the plenum. He is
trying to force the Barak to reveal his true intentions regarding upcoming
meetings in Washington with US and PA officials before he present a fait
accompli to the nation which in her words will place the future security
of the state and Yesha in jeopardy.

US announces $35 million grant to PA

Fri Jun 30,2000 -- The US government announced that it would be providing
a $35 million scholarship for Arab students residing in PA autonomous
areas wishing to pursue studies in business management in the US.
Secretary of State Madeleine Albright made the announcement of the grant
on Wednesday, following a meeting in Ramallah with PA Chairman Yassir
Arafat.

Egyptian press blames Mossad for Syrian leader�s death

Fri Jun 30,2000 -- The Egyptian weekly "Aharam al-Aravi" claims that the
Mossad Intelligence Agency is responsible for the death of Syrian
President Hafez el-Assad. They claims that during el-Assad�s telephone
call with Lebanese President Emil el-Hoss, at which time he died, Israeli
agents from atop Mount Hermon introduced deadly radioactive rays into the
phone, killing the Syrian leader. The Yediot report quoted the Foreign
Ministry response as saying the Egyptian report was a “poor joke.”

Yesha is different in regards to UN 242

Fri Jun 30,2000 -- Israeli Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein said today
that UN Resolution 242, which calls on Israel to withdraw from territories
it conquered in 1967, does not apply to Judea and Samaria. He explained
that at the time the resolution was passed, the Palestinian Authority was
not in existence.

Dov Sheffi, who served as legal advisor to the Israeli West Bank Command,
the Chief Legal Officer of the IDF, and the Legal Advisor of the Ministry
of Defense, explained recently why the Israeli pullbacks from Lebanon and
Sinai differ from the Palestinian demand for an Israel withdrawal from
Yesha. Sheffi said that Lebanon and Egypt had been sovereign over the
territories that were conquered by Israel, unlike the situation in Yesha.

"The area of the West Bank [Judea and Samaria] was conquered in [1948] by
Jordan," wrote Sheffi, "despite the fact that it was the land intended for
the establishment of a Palestinian state according to the UN General
Assembly decision of November 29, 1947... In 1950, Jordan decided to annex
the West Bank and to assert sovereignty over it. This act never received
world recognition except from Great Britain and Pakistan. Even Arab states
refused to recognize the Jordanian annexation. [As such,] the area was not
taken [by Israel] from a sovereign power... the Palestinians never
possessed [sovereignty] there...

Barak turns to Arab sector

Fri Jun 30,2000 -- Today Barak announced that he will decide in two weeks
whether the government will allocate two billion shekels to the Arab
sector for infrastructures, welfare, and education. Barak made the remarks
to Arab Labor party activists, following criticism that he was not paying
enough attention to party members and matters. Participants in today's
talk said that Barak had not met one Israeli-Arab sector representative in
his first year in office, despite the fact that 95% of the sector voted
for him. "If we do not receive attention, we will demand attention," said
one Arab, without elaborating.

     the first human embryo and let it develop for twelve days before

     Madeleine Albright, launched a stinging attack on President Slobodan
     Milosevic of Yugoslavia yesterday for drafting an ‘anti-terrorist�
     law that will give his police and courts draconian new powers. The
     law, which is expected to be passed today, will allow for sentences
     ranging from five years to life imprisonment for ‘acts that threaten
     constitutional order� or ‘create a feeling of insecurity and fear
     among citizens�, a term lawyers say could be applied to any opponents
     of the regime...”

     LIBYAN LEADER TRIES TO DESTABILIZE
                     EUROPEAN UNION

     The South China Morning Post reported: “Libyan leader Colonel
     Muammar Gaddafi this week begins sending millions of dollars to the
     Austrian province headed by far-right Freedom Party politician Joerg
     Haider after the pair held secret business meetings in Tripoli last
     month. The Hypo bank in Carinthia has confirmed it will soon receive
     US$25 million (HK$194.7 million) in British pounds, Swiss francs and
     US dollars. Mr. Haider has denied claims that Libyan money funded his
     meteoric rise to power. He says his visits to Libya were purely to
     drum up business for the province where he is governor. Colonel
     Gaddafi has been accused before of backing radical groups in Europe
     in a bid to destabilize its power base. If true, it is a policy that
     is working Austria's EU partners distanced themselves from the
     Government in Vienna after Mr. Haider joined the coalition. Later
     this week, the Libyan Arab Foreign Bank an affiliate of the Libyan
     National Bank is set to deposit another US$25 million with the
     Klagenfurt-based Hypo Alpe Adria bank, with the promise of more to
     come...”
