Two Quakes Rattle Central Turkey
Two earthquakes shook central Turkey today, centering in the same region
hit with a temblor earlier this week. No injuries were reported, the official
Anatolia news agency said. The quakes struck at 12:30 a.m. and 6:14 a.m.
with magnitudes of 5.0 and 5.2 respectively, the NTV news channel said. The
epicenters were in Cankiri province, about 60 miles north of the capital,
Ankara. Cankiri was hit by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake on Tuesday that
killed two people and injured 80. Thousands of people have spent the last
three nights in tents or under plastic sheets in streets and parks after 4,600
homes - most of them made of mud bricks or stones - collapsed in rural
areas. Cankiri lies close to the North Anatolian Fault, the source of two
strong earthquakes that leveled parts of northwestern Turkey in August and
November, killing more than 18,000 people. AP
