Eternal Life

Sh'vat 19, 5760
January 26, 2000

[I'm going to tell you right up front: what I know about this area of science
could fit quite nicely (and have room to spare) in a very small thimble. The
logistics as represented by me in this article may be off, but the basic
concept is sound. I always know if something is worth persuing if I feel like I
want to dance a jig as I hear the news. For this I wanted to dance two jigs.]

I watched "Scientific American Frontiers: Never Say Die" last night
(http://www.pbs.org). The show was about "the possibility of eternal life."

The first segment explained how less food with higher nutritional content was
beneficial for both the mental and physical needs of our bodies. Nothing
really new about this concept except that it reminded me of the manna given
to the Israelites during their time in the desert. Manna is also mentioned in
the letter to the church of Pergamos in the book of Revelation:

Revelation 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto
the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna...

This is a promise to be fulfilled in the end-times along with the river of life and
"the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every
month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations." (Rev
22:2)

The program went on to show how healthy cells split and then split and then
split again with an average of about 50 divisions before the cell died (Maybe
42 the number for "intensified apostasy"? Please see the file entitled "Forty-
two" at http://philologos.org/bpr/research.htm). They were working on a
process that would allow the cells to continue dividing indefinitely.

The next segment was on little worms called nematodes. Studies being done
with these creatures showed how their cells had receptors attached to the
sides of their nuclei. For demonstration purposes these receptors were
square shaped. Nutritional content received from their food (hormones) was
shown as a square shaped block that fit perfectly into these receptors.
Scientists have found that if they alter the shape of these receptors so that
the square shaped blocks could no longer fit into them, the worm's life could
be doubled. Both the scientist and host were scratching their heads in
amazement that the body had a built in death mechanism and were at a loss
to explain why nature would allow this. Why would cells have these
receptors that in essence kill us?

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man,
for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty
years...11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled
with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was
corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. 13 And God said
unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with
violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Before Noah, everyone was living for centuries but after the Flood, everything
changed. Men's lifespans had been severely reduced yet their bodies weren't
any different than before. What had changed? Maybe the food now being
grown and eaten from this "new" earth had the square shaped receptors that
clung to their cells and shortened their lives?

Another thing to think about is that the first thing we hear of when Noah gets
off the boat is that he starts a vineyard and gets drunk. I've always wondered
about this part of the story. Here's Noah, supposedly the only righteous man
left on earth and the first thing he does as he steps off the boat is get drunk.
He doesn't just get a little drunk but drunk enough to take his clothes off and
loll about. I could never reconcile the two. But now armed with this new piece
of evidence that the some of the nutrients used by the square shaped
receptors are byproducts of the fermentation process, I'm wondering if it
could be that the grapes before the Flood weren't as potentially intoxicating
as those after the Flood due to something in the soil. I guess I just want to
give Noah a break...

Another thing they subjected the worms to was zapping their reproductive
cells. This, too, doubled the worm's life.

Luke 20:35 But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world,
and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

Another mystery of the end-time taking on a new dimension.

The last segment showed how if you don't use your body and mind you lose
it--keep yourself occupied both physically and mentally every day of your life
and this helps you age better. (I guess we won't be hanging around on
clouds playing harps for eternity.)

If scientists are getting this close to unlocking the mystery of longevity then
just think how soon Messiah will be here to do it up right. Think of what this
technology will do in the hands of godly men and women working to further
the kingdom of God. For those of you with loved ones who are sick now,
think how close they are to being released from that burden if the Lord so
chooses. Come on now, dance a jig with me :)

Isaiah 65:20 There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old
man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old;
but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.

*** Update: Report says Palestinians offer new deal

JERUSALEM (AP) - A Palestinian proposal for a final peace settlement
that includes concessions on Jewish settlements and Jerusalem was
reported Wednesday in an Israeli newspaper - but it was immediately
repudiated as unfounded by Palestinian officials. According to the
report in Haaretz, the proposal cedes some West Bank territory
containing large blocks of Jewish settlements to Israeli sovereignty
in exchange for parts of Israel. It also reportedly offers joint
administration of Jerusalem. Another innovation in the proposal -
reported by Haaretz to have been unveiled by Palestinian leader
Yasser Arafat in a meeting with President Clinton last week - is a
backdown on refugee policy. According to Haaretz, the new Palestinian
proposal has Israel recognizing the right of Palestinian refugees
whose forebears left Israel during its independence war to return -
but not actually allowing such a return in practice. See

*** Turkey military rips Islamic party

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkey's powerful military accused the Islamic
Virtue Party Wednesday of aiding in the rise of radical groups and
issued a thinly veiled warning such actions could lead to the party's
closure. The military said Virtue was "supporting fundamentalism,
allowing it to flourish and develop" and held it responsible for the
rise of radical groups. "The Turkish armed forces, with the support
of the Turkish people, will never allow this mentality to reach its
goal," the statement from the fiercely secular military read. The
military reminded Virtue that "political parties representing this
mentality have been closed three times." Virtue faces closure by the
constitutional court for anti-secular activities. See

*** Turkey cracking down on militants

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - For almost a decade, Islamic militants
terrorized Kurds in southeastern Turkey, executing their enemies with
a single shot to the head or a swing of a long blade called the
"sword of Islam." Turkish police are now cracking down on the group,
arresting militants and uncovering dungeons and torture cells. The
campaign has raised the difficult question of whether the state
turned a blind eye or even helped create a group that went unpunished
as it killed thousands of people, including hundreds of
anti-government Kurdish rebels. Last week, authorities discovered
dozens of savagely tortured bodies, including one woman, Konca Kuris,
beneath the group's hide-outs. Outraged commentators and even some
politicians contend the state's crackdown has come only because the
group, Hezbollah, is no longer useful now that the main Kurdish
militant group, Abdullah Ocalan's Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK,
has largely been defeated. See

*** Gene identified in spinal cord injuries

(AP) - Scientists have identified a gene that prevents the brain and
spinal cord from rewiring themselves after an injury, pointing the
way to new treatments that might someday help paralyzed "Superman"
star Christopher Reeve and 250,000 Americans like him. Dubbed "Nogo"
because of its inhibiting effect, the gene produces a protein that
prevents nerve-cell connections in the central nervous system from
regenerating after they are cut. Experiments in rats showed that when
the protein is blocked, the spinal cord can repair itself.
Neurologists hailed the work as a landmark step. But they cautioned
that other factors may also inhibit nerve regrowth. See

*** Embalmer gets TB from corpse

(AP) - Researchers in Baltimore have identified the first known case
of an embalmer getting tuberculosis from a corpse. The finding led
the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine researchers to recommend that
funeral home workers take the same precautions as medical workers to
prevent transmission of the sometimes-fatal disease. The 35-year-old
dead man had AIDS as well as an active infection of tuberculosis,
which is transmitted by tiny particles of respiratory secretions that
can hang in the air for hours. DNA fingerprinting established that
the embalmer's TB came from the dead man, researcher Dr. Timothy
Sterling said. During embalming, the blood is drained and
preservative fluids are injected into the body under pressure.
Secretions sometimes become airborne when fluids gurgle through the
corpse's mouth and nose or when embalming fluids are dumped down a
drain. See

OUR FLEXIBLE FRIENDS What has a fish got to do with a computer

according to researchers at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and the
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory near San Francisco. In order to
combine the power of silicon with the flexibility of plastic, we will need to
understand the strange zone where organisation gives way to anarchy - and
that, apparently, is where the Antarctic flounder comes in... New Scientist

...and Israel's epitaph
By Cal Thomas

The parade of nations preparing to divide Israel's estate after its demise
continued last week, with the Syrians coming to Washington to claim their
rights as heirs.

In a deal already negotiated behind the scenes, representatives of Syrian
dictator Hafez Assad will receive the strategic Golan Heights in exchange for
agreements that undoubtedly will be broken and aid that will be converted
into instruments of war.

For this "peace of the brave," as Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has
called it (and he is fast becoming the Neville Chamberlain of his time), Syria
will get billions of American dollars to resettle 18,000 Golan residents and
probably billions more in military and civilian aid. If the past is any guide (and
it always is in the Middle East), Syria will use the money to buy weapons
from outcast states, strengthen its army and continue supporting an
estimated 15 terrorist organizations from the Middle East, Latin America and
Europe. Diplomatic sources indicate Syria will not be required to end its
occupation of Lebanon which, in addition to being part of the "greater Syria"
mystique of Damascus, is also a source of drug money for the Syrian
government.

What will Israel get? AWACS surveillance planes, early-warning stations,
helicopters, and jet fighters and lots of assurances that "peace is at hand."

This latest charade is being pushed by the Clinton administration so the
president can claim a decent legacy, but it's at the expense of the Jews. In
the past, Jews have had to die for the sake of land, oil and the religious and
political comfort of others. It is particularly unpleasant when Jews are co-
conspirators in their own destruction.

No matter what Syrians sign and no matter how much American money they
receive, they will still hate Israel and adhere to Mr. Assad's vow at the start
of the 1967 war: "Our forces are now entirely ready...to initiate the act of
liberation itself and to explode the Zionist presence in the Arab
homeland...The time has come to enter into a battle of annihilation." Nothing
Syria has done since indicates this goal has changed. In fact, Mr. Assad
has repeatedly broken agreements with the United States, Turkey and his
Arab neighbors.

Bashar Assad, the son and probable heir of the president of Syria, said in an
August interview with a Saudi weekly (quoted in The Jerusalem Post): "The
proposed peace will be highly restricted. There will be a formal peace
agreement, but the possibility of conflict between the two countries will
remain, requiring Syria to continue arming itself." So Israel is supposed to be
content that Syria will now be armed with American weapons instead of
Russian weapons? Changing the gas manufacturers at the Nazi death
camps would have left no fewer Jews dead.

There are many false assmptions about the Middle East. The Westerners
who are unsophisticated in the region's complexities often are seduced by
contemporary spin. The Syrians have no right to the Golan Heights, any
more than Germany has rights to Eastern Europe, or Syria has a right to
Lebanon. In 1920, the League of Nations included the Golan Heights in the
original British Mandate for Palestine. The Golan fell under Syrian control in
1944 when the French mandate was terminated. Syria controlled the Golan
for 23 years, and Israel, following Syria's unprovoked attack in 1967, has
controlled it for 32 years. So why doesn't Israel have a legitimate claim to the
territory? To return the Golan to Syria rewards the aggressor.

Writing in Dec. 10 editions of the Wall Street Journal, Steven Plaut, who
teaches at Haifa University in Israel, said America's policy toward Syria
should resemble Ronald Reagan's policy toward the Soviet Union. We should
do what we can to topple dictatorial and oppressive regimes teetering on the
brink of extinction, not throw them a lifeline.

Israel's enemies are happy to give President Clinton his "legacy," then wait
until he leaves office to impose their "final solution." The United States has
sold out the Jews before, closing its border to them during World War II.
Rather than doing penance, we are compounding our sin by helping to
destroy a nation that, in our guilt, we helped create. Syria will play the heir to
a large estate. Israel is the estate.

BARAK ASSOCIATIONS SCANDAL ROCKS ISRAEL
The publication today of the State Comptroller's official report on party
funding in last year's elections has shaken the country's political
establishment. Comptroller Eliezer Goldberg, a former Supreme Court
justice, wrote that the associations working for the campaign of Ehud Barak
and his One Israel party had struck a "great blow at the rule of law and at an
important fundamental in our lives." While presenting the report to the
Knesset Deputy Speaker today, Comptroller Goldberg had severe criticism of
Ehud Barak. Goldberg said that his investigation had revealed a "worrisome
method [of funding] that arrogantly tramples the rule of law," and that a "clear
red line must be drawn between 'rule' and 'money.'"

Although the report briefly analyzed the funding of many of the parties, and
levied fines upon them for various offenses contrary to campaign protocol, the
State Comptroller spent no less than 23 pages discussing the Barak
campaign and the individual associations that took part in it. He concluded
his treatise on the issue by imposing a fine of 13.7 million shekels (over $3.4
million) on the Labor party.

Attorney-General Elyakim Rubenstein, only 15 minutes after the publication
of the report, ordered the police to begin a criminal investigation of the
associations that helped Ehud Barak win the elections, as well as of other
parties. Shortly afterwards, Prime Minister Barak delivered a televised
speech. He said that he is happy about the opening of a criminal
investigation, and that he would cooperate fully with the police to the extent
that he is asked. Barak does not agree with Goldberg's claim that as head
of the party, he "should have known" about the associations' activities. "As
candidate for Prime Minister and party leader, I certainly knew that there was
great public support for our party and for my candidacy," he said, but added
that he was very busy with campaign appearances and the like and could not
get involved with the details.

THE REPORT AND THE ISSUES
At issue are 17 associations that helped out in various ways in the campaign
of then-MK Ehud Barak. As Justice Goldberg wrote, the associations were
officially established for various philanthropic and social purposes - such as
promoting immigration, the social involvement of Israeli students, the
deepening of the values of democracy in Israel, and the like - but deviated
from these goals by working solely for the election of Ehud Barak. By the
end of the campaign, some 5.2 million shekels had been diverted to, and
spent by, the associations in question. "As my investigation progressed,"
the report states, "I became increasingly suspicious of the systematic use of
entities not officially connected to the party, to illegally further the Barak
campaign."

The two key figures in the funding and operation of fictitious associations
were the present Cabinet Secretary, atty. Yitzchak Herzog, and Barak
campaign advisor Tal Silberstein. Goldberg explained that Herzog was the
chief fundraiser, while Silberstein directed the funds to the respective
associations. According to the report, most of the money came from the
estate of the late Jewish philanthropist Octov Butner, who died in Switzerland
in the summer of 1998. Herzog was Butner's legal advisor and the
administrator of his philanthropic activities in Israel. One of Butner's
endowments, the "Camilla Fund", was earmarked for the relief of poverty in
Israel as well as for the strengthening of Israeli education. Atty. Herzog - who
was given the authority by Butner to sign disbursements from the fund -
testified before Goldberg that he was acting "within the framework of the
deceased Butner's desires."

Another source of money was the Israeli branch of a Canadian charitable
fund, which was officially established "to provide funds for Israeli education,
health and welfare and culture, aid to medical institutions, research and
academic facilities, community centers, and to help new immigrants and
economically disadvantaged Israelis." Atty. Herzog serves as that
organization's legal advisor and is authorized to sign on its checks.

In addition to the obscurity surrounding the diversion of the above funds, two
major legal problems are highlighted in the Comptroller's report: Much of the
Barak campaign was funded through monies that were in excess of the
ceiling set for outside contributors, and the associations were systematically
utilized for other than their officially-stated purposes.

Justice Goldberg rejected a Labor party claim that it was unconnected with
the associations' operations. In addition, Labor party officials had claimed
that the law governing the limitations of party election funding is not equally
applicable to the Prime Ministerial campaign, and that the party had
legitimately taken advantage of a legal loophole. The Comptroller wrote, "A
central claim brought before me was that [this interpretation] had been
supported by a decision by the Attorney-General. I weighed this claim
seriously, and decided that it is unacceptable."

Because of the severity of the illegalities committed by the party and its
associations, State Comptroller Goldberg wrote that he felt compelled to
specify the names of all the central people involved. The names of two other
players, who did not cooperate with Goldberg's investigation, have been
passed on to Atty.-Gen. Elyakim Rubenstein.

In his conclusion, Goldberg related to the question of whether Ehud Barak
did or did not know of the operations of the associations. Barak testified that
that he was unaware of the associations' specific activities, and stressed
that he had instructed his aides to "work only within the parameters of the
law." Justice Goldberg, after summarizing Barak's position, wrote, "In my
opinion, a candidate for Prime Minister, who also serves as the chairman of
his party's campaign, has not fulfilled his obligation by simply issuing
instructions to work according to the law. He must also take interest in that
which is going on in the 'field' in order to ensure that his directions are
executed. This is certainly true in light of the extensive activity, as described
in this report, which should have lit a red light in the mind of the candidate,
which would motivate him to ascertain that the campaign, for which he is
responsible, is operating legally."

At a press conference following both the report's release and the Attorney-
General 's announcement of a police investigation, Barak explained his
position: "I am personally convinced that there is a need to alter the law on
party funding, such that both parties and Prime Ministerial candidates can
clearly understand what is permissible and what is forbidden... We won the
elections as a result of our broad societal support and volunteers throughout
the country." After reassuring his listeners that he knew nothing of the
associations' activities, Barak took issue with the Comptroller's conclusions
regarding his overall responsibility: "In such a large-scale campaign, during
which I had to make many public appearances, film campaign commercials,
give interviews, and simultaneously head the Labor party and One Israel, as
well as running for Prime Minister - with such a tremendous personal burden -
and when I instructed my aides to operate only within the law, responsible
people on whom I rely - it was not my responsibility to oversee the specific
execution of my instructions."

The Likud called a press conference after the release of the report, intending
to demand a police investigation. The effect was ruined, however, when the
decision to do so was announced before they had a chance to voice their
claim. MK Limor Livnat said that Barak was acting like a "crybaby" in
complaining of his heavy workload: "If it's so hard to be a candidate and to
know about criminal activity going on under his nose, how can he function as
Prime Minister?"

Other reactions:

Shinui MKs Lapid and Zandberg demand that a commission of inquiry be
formed to look into the entire matter of the associations... The Shas party:
"With the President under investigation for receiving millions of dollars in
contributions and half a million dollars in gifts, and the Prime Minister being
questioned about millions of shekels in donations, Aryeh Deri should have
been tried in the Small Claims court."

RABBIS IN FAVOR OF UNITED JERUSALEM
Associated Press reports that the leadership of Orthodox and Conservative
rabbis issued a rare joint statement Tuesday rejecting a recent proposal by
other rabbis that Jerusalem be shared with the Palestinians. The Rabbinical
Council of America, representing 1,100 Orthodox rabbis, and the Rabbinical
Assembly, representing 1,500 Conservative rabbis, called Jerusalem "the
united and indivisible capital solely of the State of Israel." Reform leadership
declined to sign the statement. The statement came in reaction to news
reports that over 300 Reform, Reconstructionist, and Conservative rabbis of a
group called the Jewish Peace Lobby had called for shared Israeli and
Palestinian sovereignty over Jerusalem. The names of the rabbis were not
publicized, and Dr. Jerome Segal, head of the organization, told IMRA this
week that this was because "we don't want the people on the list to be
harassed."
