Meteor explodes in air near Alaska, Yukon border

WHITEHORSE, Yukon, (Reuters) - A meteor exploded over the mountains
of southern Yukon on Tuesday, shaking houses and providing residents
of the remote region with a dramatic light show, the Geologic Survey of
Canada said. The meteor is believed to have exploded in the atmosphere
midday between Carcross, Yukon and Skagway, Alaska, at about 9 a.m.
(1700 GMT), according to the agency, which received witness reports and
sonic data on the event.

"They described it as sheet lightning-like and they turned around and saw
this large green object going through the sky," said Garry Rogers of the
Pacific Geoscience Centre in Sidney, British Columbia.

Witnesses in Carcross said the explosion rattled windows and shook
snow from roofs in the small village about 120 miles (190 km) north of
Juneau, Alaska, according to Rogers.

No injuries or damage were reported, and it was not immediately known
how large the meteor was or at what altitude it exploded.

The explosion was detected by at least three of the agency's seismic
monitoring stations in the region, but the sonic waves indicated the
meteor exploded in the air rather than in an impact with the ground, the
geologists said.

Flu comes from outer space, claim scientists

Stuart Millar
Wednesday January 19, 2000

It made the festive season a misery for many and threw NHS
policy into crisis. But the flu may have worse in store,
according to scientists who claim to have discovered an alarming
explanation for the epidemic - a virus from outer space.

Dismissing as dogma the conventional medical wisdom that flu is
a virus passed by human contact, the distinguished
astrophysicist Sir Fred Hoyle, and his colleague at Cardiff
university, Chandra Wickramasinghe, warn that we may be on the
brink of a global epidemic.

In a report to be published in the journal Current Science,
they claim the outbreak was caused by dust deposited high in the
atmosphere by passing comets being forced down to earth by
energy generated by cooler patches on the sun's surface, known
as sunspots.

They reach the peak of their activity, the maxima, every 11
years, coinciding, the scientists say, with all major flu
outbreaks since 1761, including the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic
blamed for 20m deaths worldwide. The latest cycle began to peak
in September and the maxima is due sometime this year.

The pope pleaded for unity during a historic gathering of
Christian leaders. More than 23 Protestant and Orthodox
delegations, including those headed by Anglican Archbishop George
Carey and Metropolitan Athanasios, who represented Orthodox
Patriarch Bartolemos, gathered in St. Paul's Basilica Jan. 18. It
is thought to be the largest gathering of Christian leaders with
a pope since the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s,
Reuters said.
...Pope John Paul II, Carey, and Athanasios opened the basilica's
Holy Door, signifying the start of the Roman Catholic Jubilee
year. The pope has declared 2000 a year of special blessings.
..."Perhaps we can leave this basilica shouting 'unity, unity,' "
the pope said. He said that all denominations should acknowledge
their responsibility for disunity and look for ways to reconcile.
..."In this basilica, we ask forgiveness from Christ for every
time in the history of the Church that His plan for unity was
upset," he said. "In this year of grace, there must grow in each
of us the understanding of our personal responsibility for the
fractures (in Christianity)."

Clubs for homosexuals have become more common in U.S. schools.
More than 600 gay and lesbian clubs meet at high schools, up from
fewer than 100 in 1998, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education
Network said.
...The extracurricular clubs are permissible under the same law
that allows Bible clubs to meet at schools, supporters say. The
Equal Access Act, supported by many religious groups, says public
schools that allow clubs to meet in their facilities can't
discriminate on the basis of what is discussed, USA Today said.
...Many school boards oppose gay clubs, but relent when
threatened by lawsuits from gay teens and civil rights groups.
School boards in Aurora, Colo., Greenville, S.C., and Manchester,
N.H., backed down when suits were threatened. A Salt Lake City
school district forbade all extracurricular clubs from meeting at
the school rather than give in to a gay club. The Orange Unified
School Board in California ruled that the proposed Gay Straight
Alliance club can't meet on school grounds unless it changes its
name and refuses to talk about sex. Sophomore Anthony Colin, 15,
is suing.
...Gay clubs encourage impressionable teens to experiment with
homosexuality, a parents' group that opposes the club said. The
clubs "encourage children to accept a lifestyle that leads to
premature death," parent Donna Sigalas said.
...More teens reportedly are declaring themselves to be gay.
About two-thirds of gay students said they have been verbally,
physically, or sexually harassed at school, the Gay, Lesbian, and
Straight Education Network said. In some schools gay and straight
students meet to discuss problems faced by gay students and how
to cultivate a tolerant atmosphere. The presence of gay clubs
makes homosexual students feel safer, advocates say.

A Maryland law requiring public schools to close on Good Friday
is constitutional, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Jan. 18. The
justices rejected an appeal by Judith Koenick, a retired teacher,
who said the law violates the separation of church and state and
"sends a message of inclusion to Christian children and a message
of exclusion to their Jewish, Muslim, and nonbelieving
classmates."
...A lower court had ruled that the law serves the "pragmatic,
legitimate secular purpose" of avoiding high absenteeism among
teachers and students on the days surrounding Easter. Many people
travel over the "increasingly secularized holiday of Easter,"
school board lawyers argued, The Associated Press said. Thirteen
states designate Good Friday as a legal holiday but only
Maryland, Illinois, and North Dakota require schools to close.

A woman is suing an abortion clinic for false advertising. Amy Jo
Mattson is suing the Red River Women's Clinic in a Fargo, N.D.,
court, claiming the clinic's advertising brochure made false
claims regarding the link between abortion and breast cancer.
Regarding claims that abortion increases a woman's chance of
developing breast cancer, the brochure reads, "None of these
claims are supported by medical research or established medical
organizations." According to the American Life League, a pro-life
advocacy group, 26 of the 32 medical studies conducted worldwide
concerning abortion and breast cancer show there is a connection.
...The clinic takes its information on abortion and breast cancer
from the National Abortion Federation. The NAF website says there
is "no link" between abortion and the later development of breast
cancer, but also mentions a 1994 study at the Fred Hutchinson
Cancer Research Center that found a 50% higher risk of breast
cancer in young women who had an abortion.
...An attorney for the clinic disputes the studies. "The best
medical research and the most respected medical organizations
have rejected that kind of link," Simon Heller told Conservative
News Service.
...Mattson's attorney is John Kindley of Chicago, whose article
published in the Wisconsin Law Review (see link #1 below) argued
that abortion clincis can be held legally liable for medical
malpractice for failing to disclose the abortion-breast cancer
connection.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

God's Final Warning to America
by John McTernan

Paperback - 160 pages (July 1998)
Hearthstone Publishing Inc
ISBN: 1575580276
Dimensions (in inches): 0.54 x 8.50 x 5.52

See http://philologos.org/guide/books/mcternan.john.1.htm

[BPRnote: This book recommendation was written by Norm, one our
of list members. We certainly appreciate his contribution. I
personally have not read (though intend to) this book, but I
did hear a radio interview with the author a couple of years
ago. If the book is anything like the interview, it should make
for a very interesting read.]

Isaiah 10:1 says, Woe unto them that decree unrighteous
decrees. Have you ever begun to wonder and question why God has
allowed America to continue on in its downward spiral of
immorality and corruption as though she is not held accountable
for her actions? It would seem as though America does no wrong.
John McTernan's book, "God's Final Warning to America" addresses
this very issue with some astounding insight. From the very year
1963, when our Supreme Court outlawed God from the classrooms of
our nation's schools, God was there. In the present day
government scandals that seemingly no longer alarm the American
people, God has been there. At the legalization of abortion in
1972, God was there. When the first largest gathering of
homosexuals in the world took place in Washington, D.C. in 1987,
God was there. For those who feel America is unstoppable, this
book is a must read. For those who believe America is exempt
from the wrath of the Almighty God, this book is a must read. It
is an eye-opener and startling reminder that the Lord still
reigns. Every man's work, including America's, will be made
manifest.

Proverbs 14:34 says, Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin
is a reproach to any people. This book takes an extraordinary
look at the many earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, recent wild
fires, and other natural disasters, and exposes the real problem
at hand: the sins of our nation. This book looks at past and
present stock market crashes, plummeting SAT scores, violence,
rioting, teen pregnancy, abortions, and various other social
issues, and shows an undeniable link between these and the
natural disasters once called "Acts of God." America is a nation
that's being warned by God to turn from its wicked ways so that
He may heal this land. Otherwise if we continue, God states in
Leviticus 18, that the land itself will vomit out the
inhabitants. The facts and connections this book makes between
earthquakes, floods, wild fires, and America's wavering morals,
makes it evident that the land is indeed vomiting out the
inhabitants. The author makes it clear that the precise timing
of these disasters and their connection with social and
political events that are untoward God are no coincidence, but
rather they are unmistakable warnings that we are held
accountable for our actions.

I was glued to this book with every chapter, and unable to put
it down until I had finished the last page. I then had to read
it again. I have shared the wealth of information found in this
book with many friends, some of whom have since purchased their
own copy. One thing that I have learned from this book is that
when the United States Supreme Court gathers itself together to
make decisions, Americans should beware: God is listening. When
the UN votes to place pressures on Israel that oppose God, God
is listening. When presidents, past and present, make decisions
that are untoward God, God is still watching. After reading this
book, I am all the more convinced that God is not mocked, and
that whatsoever a man soweth, or a nation in this case, that
shall he reap. This book contains the facts and stories
surrounding natural disasters, the financial loss, the loss of
human life, charts and graphs making it plain to even the
greatest of skeptics, that God is still very much a part of
today's world and society in which we live. I would encourage
anyone who is in doubt, or anyone who needs a fresh perspective
for their faith in God, to pick up this book and read it.

Subject: [BPR] - 'Old Faithful' (black hole)

'Great show-off' black hole - microquasar GRS 1915+105 - is producing
massive shock waves, Cornell astronomer reports

HOLD FOR EMBARGO: FRIDAY, JAN. 14, 2000

Contact: David Brand
Office: (607) 255-3651
E-mail: deb27@cornell.edu

ATLANTA -- Something really shocking is going on in a microquasar, or black
hole, dubbed "Old Faithful," some 40,000 light years from Earth. It seems
to be behaving like a giant particle collider, with massive shock waves
generating eruptions every 45 to 90 minutes.

This is the second time that Old Faithful, the first known microquasar in
our galaxy, the Milky Way, has been observed to be acting strangely. Two
years ago astronomers presented evidence, from X-ray and infrared
observations, that the microquasar is sending out jets of hot gas at close
to regular half-hour intervals.

"The system is erratic enough to be called chaotic," says Cornell
University astronomer Stephen Eikenberry.

Eikenberry presented the latest findings from what he calls "the greatest
show-off of all black holes" in a poster-paper report at the national
meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Atlanta today (Jan. 14).
Eikenberry's colleagues on the latest observations, which were made in July
1998 with the Palomar Observatory 200-inch telescope and the Rossi X-ray
Timing Explorer satellite, were Keith Matthews of the California Institute
of Technology; Michael Muno, Ronald Remillard and Edward Morgan of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Philip Blanco of the University
of California, San Diego.

The discovery that a black hole is producing explosive "shock fronts," says
Eikenberry, might be a clue to the behavior of much more massive,
extra-galactic black holes, called quasars, where eruptions seem to occur
on scales of years to decades. By comparison, Old Faithful, a microquasar
called GRS 1915+105 in the constellation Aquila (the eagle), has in the
past produced flares, or eruptions, as few as 20 seconds apart.

A black hole is a massive collapsed star of such density that its intense
gravitational pull prevents even light from escaping. Like other collapsed
stars, such as neutron stars, black holes often are observed orbiting a
nearby star from which they are sucking in gaseous material. This gas
forms the accretion disk, a spiraling band of material around the black
hole. In some cases the black hole appears to eject some of this material
in jets moving at nearly the speed of light.

The Old Faithful microquasar first revealed itself as a bright
X-ray source in 1992, and in 1994 radio observations found jets streaking
away from the black hole at more than 90 percent of the speed of light. Two
years later, infrared and X-ray observations revealed smaller, rapid jet
ejections occurring nearly every 30 minutes.

Now, says Eikenberry, a third class of flare, made up of synchrotron
radiation (the radiation produced by fast-moving charged particles in a
curved path), is being emitted from an expanding plasma bubble. The
bubble, he says, is a cloud of high-energy electrons swirling around in a
magnetic field and possibly created by shock waves. The magnetic field
curves the trajectory of the electrons and causes them to emit radiation.
One or more such plasma bubbles make up a jet ejection, theorizes
Eikenberry, an assistant professor of astronomy at Cornell.

What is new here, says Eikenberry, is a different view of what can occur
when material flows into a rotating black hole. "Something happens at the
interface between the innermost part of the accretion disk and the black
hole that creates a jet. The innermost accretion disk is somehow being
affected by the black hole and that causes part of the disk to be ejected
in the form of a jet and part of it to fall in," he says.

Previous observations showed a disruption in the inner accretion disk
followed by the appearance of a jet ejection. These new observations,
however, show the plasma bubble appearing before the inner disk activity.

"Since we always thought that the black hole in the inner disk drives jet
activity, this was a real surprise," says Eikenberry. "We have a few
possible ideas to explain it though. One idea is that a wave of material,
a shock front, is moving through the accretion disk." Another theory, he
says, is that the black hole is emitting a continuous outflow of material
and the observed flares are shock fronts moving through the jets.

The newly discovered synchrotron radiation jets "are clearly
different from the jets previously seen," says Eikenberry. "This is
telling us there are different ways to make jets or plasma bubbles in
microquasars."

Spanish Ice: Mystery Or Prank?

Associated Press
Jan. 19, 2000; 4:23 p.m. EST

MADRID, Spain =96=96 Spain's great ice mystery is beginning to look like a
prank.

Around 30 chunks of ice are said to have dropped from the sky since Jan.
8, some the size of basketballs, often in gloriously sunny weather, and
just about every Spanish region has taken a hit.

The precipitation has picked up so much in the past few days that
scientists said Wednesday they had collected enough samples and would
not accept any more.

The Superior Council for Scientific Research urged people who find
suspect frozen matter to double-wrap it in plastic and keep it in a
refrigerator. The council is conducting chemical analyses and has
promised to report initial findings on Friday.

In the meantime, chemists in Valencia did some checking of their own.
They say they don't know what the chunks are, but they know what they
are not.

They are not human waste expelled from airplanes, as had been
speculated, because there is no evidence of microorganisms that would be
present in urine, the University of Valencia team said.

They found that a sample collected Saturday in the town of Meliana
contained sodium chloride, or table salt, and gypsum, which is chalk. Both=

are very earthly, which weakens another popular argument =96 that the
chunks may come from the tail of a comet.

But scientists quoted in newspapers say there are several puzzling things
about the chunks. First, a chunk of ice falling from a plane would smash
into many pieces, but the ones found so far have been intact.

Also, if this were a natural phenomenon, the size of the ice chunks should=

vary. But most have been the size of basketballs.

Then there is the exponential increase in recent days =96 20 chunks of ice=

found on Tuesday alone. At least half a dozen were quickly proven to be
practical jokes =96 including a seven-pound block with perfectly sharp
edges.

Subject: [BPR] - Stolen car brought to a halt by satellite

Stolen car brought to a halt by satellite
Tracking device nets suspects after 401 trip

By Bob Mitchell and Tracy Huffman
Toronto Star Staff Reporters

Three teenagers are facing charges after the stolen car they were driving
was stopped by remote control on Islington Ave.

Provincial police were waiting as an alarm-monitoring company used satellite
technology to stop the wheels of the 1999 Chrysler Intrepid and the
surprised occupants bailed out.

Police say Monday's incident is among the first cases in Greater Toronto
where a stolen vehicle was stopped through the use of a computer tracking
device inside the car.

Vehicle-tracking devices are commonly installed in luxury cars as well as
rental vehicles, said Andrew Dolan, business manager of Bob Bannerman
Dodge
Jeep on Don Mills Rd.

``It's an alarm system and a tracking device at the same time,'' he said.
``When the car is stolen, the company notifies the customer through a pager
system. Then the company will track (the car) via satellite because there is
a chip in the car.''

The remote control system can turn off the car's engines and lock the doors,
trapping the thief in the vehicle.

Police said the Intrepid, which had been stolen from a Thrifty Car and Truck
Rental lot in Kitchener, was equipped with a Global Positioning System
tracking device monitored by Navlynx Canada Inc.

The car was stolen around 2:15 p.m. and was seen travelling on Highway 401
toward Toronto, said Constable Lisa Anderson of the Port Credit detachment
of the Ontario Provincial Police.

``As officers were getting into position to intercept the stolen vehicle,
they received information updates (from the police dispatcher, in contact
with the monitoring company) as to the exact speed of the vehicle, its exact
location, how much gas was left in the fuel tank, even information as to
which doors on the motor vehicle were locked or unlocked,'' Anderson said.

``Officers were also informed that there was no need to attempt to stop the
vehicle because the monitoring company had the capabilities to disable the
vehicle once it reached a safe location to do so.''

Police say the vehicle left Highway 401 and travelled south on Islington
Ave.

Navlynx disabled the vehicle as it came to a stop at the intersection of
Islington Ave. and Norseman St., where officers moved in and nabbed the
three teenagers as they ran from the disabled vehicle.

The security system, which can be used in any vehicle, costs about $400
installed, and the customer pays a monthly fee of around $20, Dolan said.

``This kind of device could be the answer to many of our ills,'' said
Ontario Provincial Police Superintendent Jay Hope, regional commander for
Greater Toronto. ``This is the first time I know of a stolen car being
stopped this way on our highways.

``Company officials said they've used it before in finding rental vehicles
that have been stolen, but this is the first time it's ever been used for
stolen vehicle being stopped by police and the occupants arrested.

``This technology would greatly assist all police officers in protecting all
persons against property damage, serious injuries and deaths in relation to
police pursuits.''

A 17-year-old youth was charged with theft over $5,000, possession over
$5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failure to comply with
probation, breach of recognizance and driving a motor vehicle without a
licence.

Also arrested and charged with possession over $5,000 was a 16 year-old
and a 15-year-old.

The 15-year-old also is charged with possession of a controlled substance.

The names of the youths are protected by the Young Offenders Act.
