Red Color in River Causes Alarm at Romanian Environment Ministry

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Four weeks after a cyanide spill at a
Romanian gold mine polluted eastern European waterways, Romania's
Ministry of Environment on Saturday reported red discoloration in a
northern river.

The red spill, stretching 1.25 miles, was first discovered in the
river Crasna on Friday afternoon, an official report said.

The Crasna flows 46 miles in northern Romania before entering Hungary.
The river meets the Tisza, which suffered widespread pollution from
the Jan. 30 cyanide spill when water containing poisonous cyanide
flowed into it from the Romanian Somes tributary.

Authorities have not yet identified what is causing the water to turn
red, but an investigation was being carried out. No dead fish have
been seen in the area.

Environmental authorities have requested help from the police to try
to identify the cause of the pollution. Several textile and leather
processing companies operate in the area.

Local authorities in Romania's northwestern counties of Salaj and Satu
Mare opened flood gates damming up water in drainage channels to raise
the flow in the Crasna to over 740 cubic foot per second to help
dilute the unidentified substance in the river, the Ministry said.

Authorities in Bucharest on Saturday notified their counterparts in
Hungary about the latest incident.

1. Here begins the account of the sinless, pure, and perfect state of the
church in the personal reign of Christ, even the New Jerusalem church state,

#Re 21:23 where it is read, "and the city had no need of the sun, neither of
the moon to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the
light thereof"; and in like manner the Targum renders these words,

"and ye shall have no need any more of the light of the sun by day, nor even
of the light of the moon by night; ''

and so both Aben Ezra and Jarchi interpret it,

"ye shall have no need of the light of the sun";

and the former adds, because of the light of the Shechinah; and which
seems to be the meaning of the next clause:

...because of the exceeding brightness, splendour, and lustre of the divine
majesty of Christ, who will appear personally among his people, neither sun
nor moon will be able to give any light: as the light of a candle is made
useless and unnecessary by the light of the sun, so the light of the sun and
moon will be made useless and unnecessary by the vastly superior light and

The Midrashim ["exposition to the underlying significance of a Bible text"--
Webster's] that deal with the days of creation discuss the "anomaly" of
having the sun and moon being created on the fourth day. There are 2
explanations for the creation of light on the first day and subsequent creation
of sun, moon and stars on the 4th:

1. Everything was created on the first day but things were only given their
form on subsequent days.

2. The light created on the first day is not the same light of today. God first
created an overwhelming light that would make our sun seem like darkness
in comparison. This light was hidden because:

"'The wicked people of the future, the generations of the Flood and the
Dispersal, will not be worthy to bear the intense light created on the first
day.' He [God] therefore hid it for the tzaddikim [righteous men] in olam haba
[the world to come]. Adam in Gan Eden was allowed to benefit from the light
of the first day. By means of it, he was able to see from one end of the world
to the other. This special light was of a spiritual kind; it emanated from the
glory of the shechina [Divine presence] which will be enjoyed by the
tzaddikim in the future. They will be rewarded with enjoyment of the light of
the shechina for having studied Torah which is compared to light." [The
Midrash Says, The Book of Beraishis, Rabbi Moshe Weissman]

Adam was allowed to enjoy this special light for 36 hours during the six days
of creation. For 12 hours on the eve of the Sabbath through the Sabbath he
was given this special blessing. That is why the words "and it was evening,
and it was morning" are not stated regarding the seventh day.

The Midrashim [expositions of Bible verses] regarding the days before the
flood accuse the people of those generations of three specific crimes:
idolworship, bloodshed and immorality.

1. Idolworship--they wanted to distance themselves from God. "They
strengthened their independence from Hashem by acquiring expertise in
witchcraft."

2. Bloodshed--they were murderers.

3. Immorality--"These generations ignored the commandment given to Adam
(1:28), "Be fruitful and multiply." Since their goal in life was to gratify their
instincts, they attempted to minimize the number of children that they had.
This explains the atrocities prevalent at that time: a) a man would take two
wives, one for the purpose of childbearing, the other for his pleasure; b) they
exchanged wives; c) they arranged 'marriage contracts' between men and
beasts, thus legalizing forbidden relationships; and d) the judges themselves
were corrupt."

These three are bad enough, yet God would have given them more time to
repent if they hadn't added the fourth crime of robbery.

Their thievery was of a subtle nature. Each would steal only a small amount,
something so small it was not punishable by law, yet the cumulative effect
would be that the victim was left with nothing.

A few examples from the Midrash:

1. R. Eliezer walked along the road and required that one of his students get
him a wooden splinter to use as a toothpick from a fence around a vineyard.
Even though the fence was private property, the owner would certainly not
object to anyone taking a minute particle of wood of no value. Nevertheless,
R. Eliezer changed his mind and said, 'Do not bring me the splinter! Others
might follow my example and eventually will cause the fence to be
demolished!'

2. R. Shimon ben Elazar related, 'Once a girl set me right in a halachic
matter. I was walking across a field when a girl called to me, "Rabbi, this is a
privately-owned field!" "But I am walking on the path," I objected. "This path,"
she answered, "was blazed by robbers like you!"'

They were also accused of moving the boundary markers, taking donkeys,
oxen, sheep and even clothes from each other.

"Why was their guilty verdict finalized for the sin of theft more than for the
crimes of idolworship, bloodshed or immorality? The answer is that robbery
undermines the basis of all civilization. It is common sense that another
person's property may not be stolen. Whenever Hashem sits in judgment
over a person guilty of several crimes, there is one crime that accuses him
above all others--the sin of robbery."

'Jesus boat' moved to permanent home

Two thousand years after it was built and 14 years after it was discovered on
the bottom of the Kinneret, the "Jesus boat" was last week lifted to its new
home, where it will finally be on full display.

A crane lifted the eight-meter-long fishing boat out of the shed where it had
been soaking since 1986. The boat, encased in Styrofoam and metal, was
suspended in midair until being lowered into an addition to the Yigal Allon
Center on Kibbutz Ginossar.

The boat was dated by carbon-14 testing to 40 BCE, +/- 80 years. When
discovered and resurrected, it faced disintegration if its waterlogged wood
dried out, and so was placed in a chemical bath for seven years before being
exposed to air.

A special shack was built for it that only allowed 50 people at a time to view
the boat. Now, museum officials hope, many more will see it.

During its renovations, experts determined that it was made with inferior
quality timber salvaged from other boats. It was also extensively repaired. It
was a flat bottom boat used for fishing close to shore, and was made
watertight with pitch from the Dead Sea.

JERUSALEM [MENL] -- Israel said Hizbullah is planning what Foreign
Minister David Levy termed "horrible attacks" on the Jewish state.

Officials said Hizbullah plans to launch new Katyusha and artillery attacks
on the Jewish state. They said Hizbullah is being encouraged by Syria, Iran
and several other Arab countries, including Egypt. They said the attacks
appear to be planned for next week.

Hizbullah, officials said, has received what they termed long-range artillery
from Iran. They said they have received information of preparations by the
Shi'ite militia to deploy the weapons in any new round of fighting with Israel.

Iranian arms shipments to Hizbullah have increased to twice a month, officials
said, enough weapons to fight Israel for months. U.S. officials have
acknowledged the buildup.

Levy on Thursday warned that a ministerial security committee has already
decided that the government will launch "the most severe" attacks in
retaliation of any hostility on Israeli civilians.

"Nobody should make a mistake," Levy told Israel radio on Thursday. "The
danger has not passed. There is nobody who can promise us that Hizbullah
will not fire -- not even Katyushas, but long-range artillery. The
encouragement from the Arab countries is meant for it [Hizbullah] to
implement its plans. This is a group that only answers to Iran. Syria also
encourages it, even during these days. During these days, it [Hizbullah] is
planning and it can operate and it has terrible tools and there is nobody to
restrain it."

The foreign minister reiterated his warning that Israeli retaliation against
Hizbullah attacks might harm civilians. He said his threats issued in
parliament on Wednesday and the harsh language used were not an
outburst.

"This was not an outburst," he said. "I did not threaten. I warned. This quiet
is illusory."

On Thursday, Prime Minister Ehud Barak expressed support for Levy. "I
regard him as a very important and responsible partner," he said.

Officials said Levy's warning reflected Israeli concern over the total Arab
support for Lebanon and Hizbullah in the wake of Israeli retaliatory attacks
earlier this month. The support includes Egypt and Jordan, both of which have
signed peace treaties with Israel.

On Thursday, the London-based Al Quds Al Arabi daily reported that Egypt
and Syria are planning a summit that would include Lebanon and Saudi
Arabia. The newspaper said the summit would declare support for Lebanon.
This, while Syrian newspapers on Thursday continued to refer to Israeli
leaders as Nazis.

Israeli military sources on Thursday agreed with Levy and said the lull in
Hizbullah attacks is temporary and is maintained for tactical reasons.
Hizbullah on Thursday fired anti-tank missiles toward an Israeli outpost in
southern Lebanon. Nobody was reported injured.

Earlier, Levy issued Israel's most severe warning against a Hizbullah attack.
"Should Kiryat Shmona burn, then Lebanese soil will burn," Levy said. "In the
same way. Blood for blood; soul for soul; child for child. And a time for
warning. And this warning prevented a catastrophe and registered. Israel will
not concede under any condition on its right of self-defense."

The foreign minister accused Israeli Arab parliamentarians of siding with
Hizbullah in its campaign against Israel. The parliamentarians shouted in
protest and several of them left the plenum.

In the Palestinian Authority, leading Palestinians announced their support for
Hizbullah and urged the Palestinians to adopt the Shi'ite struggle in what they
said was the effort to liberate Palestinian lands. The supporters of Hizbullah
included former Palestinian Legislative Council president Haider Abdul Shafi.

The Israeli warning comes as the Israeli military has accelerated
preparations for a withdrawal from Lebanon. Military sources said that next
week tenders will be announced for the construction of new outposts along
Israel's northern border.

They said Israel's 10 outposts in Lebanon would be moved to within the
Jewish state. Land would be expropriated along the northern border for the
construction.

The sources said the South Lebanese Army is being consulted regarding
efforts to dismantle the militia's outpost and resettle many of its soldiers.
