Did Goliath Have Gland Disorder?

JERUSALEM - The biblical tale of David slaying Goliath is the
grand archetype of giant-killer imagery, but new research
suggests that those who believe David was the underdog might be
wrong.

An Israeli neurologist said Thursday that after years of
studying the biblical account, he has determined that Goliath
suffered from a hormonal disease that put him at a disadvantage
against the slingshot-wielding David.

..''It was a miracle that such a small and young shepherd could
defeat Goliath in battle,'' said Vladimir Berginer, a professor
of neurology at Ben-Gurion University here. ''But now I have
found an explanation for it.''

Religious groups shouldn't have to hide their faith to run
federally funded literacy programs, members of Congress said. The
House Education Committee and the Workforce Committee approved a
bill allowing churches and other groups to take part in such
programs, The Associated Press said.
..."Trying to totally separate the faith of a society from any
form of influence is ridiculous," Rep. Mark Souder (R-Ind.) said.
Religious groups are connected to their communities, equipping
them to run social programs dealing with day care, drug
treatment, job training, and literacy, he said.
...The bill does not require churches or synagogues to remove
religious icons from classrooms or to hire secular teachers, AP
said. It authorizes the Even Start Program, which offers tutoring
services for preschool children and job training for their
parents, AP said.
...Church-state separation groups opposed the bill. "The courts
have never allowed churches to get tax dollars to run educational
programs," Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of
Church and State said. "It is particularly appalling that a
congressional committee thinks it is OK to fund programs that
practice religious discrimination in hiring."

A Christ-like figure is walking the streets of an eastern
Pennsylvania city telling people to love God and one another.
Carl Joseph, 39, a self-taught evangelist who wears a beard and
dresses in a white robe and sandals, has been largely embraced by
the town of Hazelton, Pa., ABC News said. His messages urging
people to share the love of Christ and to take time to know God
have gained wide acceptance since he arrived in the community
several weeks ago, the program said. Joseph visits the sick and
elderly, preaches to crowds on the streets, and speaks at local
churches.
...Joseph said he has visited 47 states and 13 countries with his
message, going "wherever the Spirit moves me." He has been
arrested twice in Ohio for preaching to crowds that became
unruly, ABC said. Joseph calls himself "What's Your Name" to get
people to think about who God is.
...He says he is not Jesus. "You can imagine that some would
think I'm doing something very blasphemous," he said, after a man
recently attacked him, accusing him of trying to be Christ.

Indonesians are asking Christians worldwide to pray and fast for
the Moluccas islands Feb. 20. "Christians are being slaughtered
on a frequent basis simply because they are Christians," Jubilee
Campaign's Wilfred Wong said. The United Kingdom-based
religious-rights group is issuing the call to prayer on behalf of
Indonesian Christians.
...At least 2,000 people have died in religious violence in the
Moluccas (see link #1 below), mostly on the island of Ambon,
since Dec. 1998, Jubilee said. About 700 people died in rioting
in December and January, the group said. Radical Muslims, in some
cases aided by Indonesian military units, have destroyed churches
and massacred Christians, Jubilee said. Indonesian media have
inflamed the situation by portraying Christians as instigators
and Muslims the victims, the group said.
...The Indonesian Communion of Churches has asked Christians to
fast, pray for the Moluccas during their services, and consider
holding a special prayer event, Jubilee said, because of the
"sheer scale of the violence and overwhelming evil which the
Moluccan church is up against."
...Christians should pray for peace and better Muslim-Christian
relations throughout Indonesia, Jubilee said. They should also
pray for international pressure on the Indonesian government to
restore order, protection for Christians, and that attempts to
Islamicize Indonesia will be unsuccessful.

...a reader wrote in and suggested the "Diatessaron" would be such an
example. Not being familiar with the text myself I ran across this info that I
thought I would share:

Diatesseron (Greek: "According to Four")

Early influential harmony of the four canonical gospels
composed before 173 CE by Tatian, probably at Rome. Tatian's
work may have simply been an expanded revision of an earlier
harmony of the three synoptic gospels made by his teacher,
Justin Martyr.

Despite the Diatesseron's widespread influence, there is no
surviving complete ms. But much of it can be reconstructed from
early commentaries & other harmonies in many ancient languages
(other than Greek). The Diatesseron influenced early
translations of the four gospels into Syriac, Latin, Armenian,
Georgian, & Old German. And its harmonized narrative structure
became a model for later gospel harmonies from Holland to
Persia. But it was eventually suppressed by Greek Orthodox &
Roman Catholic church authorities, because its author became the
leader of a heretical sect.

The language in which the Diatesseron was originally composed
is debatable. A single Greek fragment was found at Dura Europos
in eastern Syria, which was destroyed in 257 CE. Stylistic
analysis, however, shows the Diatesseron preferred Syriac
grammatical constructions in paraphrasing the Greek gospel texts.

In spite of the Diatesseron's tendency to harmonize passages
from the four canonical gospels (and perhaps the gospel of
Thomas), its readings are taken seriously by modern textual
critics. For the copies of the gospels that Tatian used to
create his work were obviously written before the mid- 2nd c.
CE. Thus, the Diatesseron is often a witness to the very
earliest wording of a particular text.

MERIDOR: OSLO IS BAD

Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chairman Dan Meridor
(Centrist party) fears that Israel and the Palestinians may be on the verge of
an armed conflict. In an interview published in today's Yediot Acharonot,
Meridor said that we "must attempt to prevent the clash, but we should be
prepared for it." Regarding the Oslo process, Meridor said, "It was bad. A
norm was set by which the Palestinians do not fulfill agreements, and we
suffice with shrugging our shoulders... Further concessions by Israel will
merely increase Arafat's appetite." Turning to the Golan Heights, MK
Meridor said he objects to a withdrawal from most of the Golan under the
present circumstances: "It's been quiet up there for 25 years, and there is no
need to give the Golan to the Syrians in exchange for continued quiet."

ARAB ATTACKS CONTINUE

Meanwhile, individual attempts upon Israeli targets by Palestinian Arabs
continue. On the Jordan Valley's Alon Highway, between the Jericho
junction and the Cross-Samaria Highway, several attacks against Israeli cars
have been carried out. A wire and a pipe were stretched along the highway
this past week, causing damage to two cars. No one was hurt. Last night,
concrete blocks were placed on the road. IDF forces combed the area, and
suspect that residents of the Arab village Malek are behind the acts. Rocks
have also been thrown from Malek at cars traversing the route, which
connects Ma'aleh Ephraim with Jerusalem.

In Gaza, two Molotov cocktails were thrown over the past two nights at IDF
patrols near Rafiah. Both were thrown from within the autonomous section of
the city. O.C. Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yom Tov Samiyeh met with
Palestinian Authority seniors, and told them of the gravity with which the IDF
sees these incidents.

P.A. EXPERT REFUSES TO SIT WITH YESHA RESIDENT

A Palestinian Authority environmental expert refused to share a podium last
night with his Israeli counterpart, simply because the latter is a resident of
Shomron. The events developed as follows: A segment of a television series
dealing with Jewish-Arab relations in Israel was being filmed in Tel-Ad
studios last night, and two experts on environmental issues were scheduled
to appear: Dr. Zhad Ish'chak and Director of the Shomron Cities Association,
Yitzchak Meir. When the former saw his counterpart, he tore off his
microphone and announced that he refused to sit next to Meir. The
producers spent 15 fruitless minutes attempting to convince Ish'chak to
change his mind, and then decided to try another tack: They asked Meir to
leave. Meir protested, and refused to do so. In the end, the program was
filmed without either of the two experts.

BOMBS IN LEBANON, U.S. HAS WORDS

Two Southern Lebanese Army soldiers were wounded yesterday while
attempting to dismantle Hizbullah-planted roadside bombs. The SLA
successfully neutralized a series of such bombs today, which were carefully
hidden along a road traversed by both SLA and IDF forces. IDF sources
praised the action, and said that large numbers of casualties were thus
prevented.

The United States had criticism of Hizbullah yesterday, but still warned Israel
not to freely retaliate against the terrorists or even against Lebanese
infrastructures. State Department spokesman James Rubin said yesterday,
"We do not believe that Israeli attacks against civilian infrastructure and
populated areas will solve the problem. Such actions only add to the
suffering of the people of Lebanon." The State Department had some words
for Hizbullah, as well: "The latest escalation in southern Lebanon is a
cynical and deliberate effort by Hizbullah to direct fire from populated areas.
This escalation puts Lebanese civilians and the interests of Lebanon at risk,
in addition to undermining the pursuit of Arab-Israeli peace."

HOW TO INCREASE ALIYAH?

Immigration from the West is down 15% from 1998 levels, reports the
Jerusalem Post today. Aliyah in general increased this past year by 38%,
according to Jewish Agency and Immigration Ministry statistics, but it is
chiefly from countries of the former Soviet Union. Only 1,323 Americans
moved to Israel in 1999, some 7,000 less than its peak in 1971, and the
lowest it's ever been since 1968.

Shot Spotter Technology Sparks Concern

Police praise a new high tech system that allows them to record gunfire, but
privacy advocates fear it could be abused. By Paul Elias

In 1996, Redwood City police wired a 1-square-mile section of the Silicon
Valley city with eight microphones hidden on rooftops and telephone poles.
The microphones were connected through an open phone line to a central
computer at police dispatch.

The police spent $100,000 on a system called Shot Spotter, which was
developed by Trilon Technologies of Los Altos, California. Its mission: to
prevent gunfire.

"When a gunshot occurs, within less than 15 seconds, a dispatcher is
notified of the event and on a computer screen, would actually see an icon
of the exact address of where those shots were fired from," company
spokesman Salvador Sandoval told Legal Analyst Luke Reiter. We're able to
track random gunfire

Using "triangulation" software, officers can pinpoint where the shots were
fired based on how long it took the sound to reach each of the microphones
in the area. The cops love it.

"From a crime-prevention standpoint, we use the system as part of a two-
pronged approach in our community," Redwood City Police Captain Scott
Warner said in an interview with Reiter. "From a technological standpoint,
we're able to tell the community that we're able to track random gunfire. At
the same time, we tell the community that it's not a good idea to be shooting
guns randomly." Privacy advocates deride the system as another example of
Big Brother

So far, Redwood City is the only place that uses the system. But in
December, the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department announced it was
giving Shot Spotter a 30-day tryout. The county set up microphones in its
Willowbrook neighborhood near Long Beach. The south-central LA area has
been plagued by drive-by shootings, gang violence, and drug crimes for
years.

On New Year's morning, the system recorded 1,000 hits-- probably a
combination of firecrackers and gunshots-- between midnight and 1 a.m.

Redwood City did not have the same problem on New Year's.

"We've taken a significant problem for our community and made it relatively
insignificant," Warner said.

Privacy Under Fire?
While cops and company officials laud the Shot Spotter technology as the
"Big Ear of the Law," privacy advocates deride the system as yet another
example of Big Brother prying into our lives.

Van Jones, a Yale-educated lawyer who is executive director of the Ella
Baker Center for Human Rights, is especially concerned.

"There's a slippery slope here," Jones told Reiter.

The San Francisco nonprofit Baker Center runs a program called Bay Area
Police Watch. The safety benefits that Shot Spotter may provide don't
outweigh privacy concerns, Jones argued. On New Year's morning, the
system recorded 1,000 hits

"Eventually you could make the same argument that we should have video
cameras and microphones on every public street corner," Jones said. Then
everybody would be safe. But nobody would be free. And that's the danger--
that we're moving in the direction now where we're pushing law enforcement
into creating a surveillance security state."

Not only that, Jones said he is concerned about Shot Spotter's reliability.

"We're going into a situation very soon, where police are going to be
deployed to people's homes, people are going to be arrested, and people are
going to be charged based on technology that is not infallible," Jones said.

"You know from your own pager, from your own VCR, from your own
automobile that technology is not infallible."

Company spokesman Sandoval defends the system as accurate.

"The way the system has been developed it doesn't give you inaccurate
information," Sandoval said.

Warner, meanwhile, said he understands the privacy concerns, but insists
that Jones's criticisms are unfair. He said his department hasn't received a
single complaint about Shot Spotter, nor has the eavesdropping system been
responsible for any arrests other than those connected to gunfire.

"We aren't interested in anything other than gunfire and we don't listen to
anything other than gunfire and we can't hear anything other than gunfire,"
Warner said. "So it's not an issue of privacy for us. Someone who's shooting
a gun in the air, from our perspective, has given up their right to privacy."

Does The March Of Dimes Support Abortion?

CHARLOTTE, NC (EP) -- The March of Dimes, known for working to fight
childhood birth defects, began its semiannual "Mothers' March" to raise
money to fight polio. Now that the battle against polio has been won, what is
the new agenda of the March of Dimes? According to a Charlotte World
report by Kim Cuneo, some pro-life activists say the group's hidden agenda
is abortion.

March of Dimes leaders insist that the organization is "neutral" on the
abortion issue, a claim some pro-life leaders dismiss. "You can't have a
neutral stance on abortion," said Erik Whittington, director of the pro-life
group Rock for Life. "Once the facts are presented, you can't be neutral on
the murdering of a child."

"The March of Dimes is supposed to be an advocate for children," said Irene
Manning, a North Carolina pro-life activist. "For them not to take a position
when over one million babies are killed each year is absurd. Many people
think the March of Dimes is something great, but they don't realize they're an
instrument of supporting abortion."

Michele Kling, a spokesperson for the March of Dimes, said the organization
had a "look the other way" policy regarding many doctors on its committees
and even on its board. This policy is the source of much of the criticism of
the March of Dimes. Among the pro-abortion doctors who have served in
March of Dimes leadership positions is Henry Foster, who was nominated by
the Clinton administration for surgeon general; his nomination derailed when
it was revealed that he had performed several hundred abortions.

"We have a lot of committees and a lot of doctors on those committees,"
Kling said. "We don't ask them if they perform abortions. We have no idea
how they handle their medical practices. We don't know what they do in their
personal practice. These people are volunteers and they serve on our
committees. We invite them irregardless of their stand on abortion. We take
no stance so we can be an organization that anyone can work for."

However, a paper funded by the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation
entitled "Strategies in Genetic Counseling: Reproductive Genetics and New
Technologies" openly advocates abortion. The authors of this paper refer to
first trimester pregnancy termination as a woman's right, and notes, "it may
be appropriate to utilize this technology in selected cases." The paper
concludes: "The authors have demonstrated in this series that selective
termination can be performed safely with minimal risk to the remaining
fetuses. ...[Selective abortion] is an alternative for the management of
multifetal pregnancies and ... there are no public policy obstacles to offering
this alternative to pregnant women."

Many pro-lifers first became alarmed by the work of the March of Dimes in
1972, when the organization funded research that resulted in the
development of amniocentesis, which was pioneered by the MOD in 1972.
Amniocentesis is a technique used mid-trimester to determine if the child

Dimes use this testing and do abortions."

Pro-life groups have been boycotting March of Dimes fundraising activities.
"All 3,000 Right to Life chapters in the U.S. have, for the last two decades,
maintained a nationwide boycott against working for or giving money to the
March of Dimes," states literature from the Life Issues Institute. "The March
of Dimes is still very much involved in at least the toleration of, if not the
promotion of, elective abortion for handicapped children. They have set the
stage so that abortions can be done."
