Analysis / Wresting their case

                  By Danny Rubinstein

Last night on his return from Cairo, Chairman Yasser Arafat did indeed speak
of certain reservations about the bridging proposals of U.S. President Bill
Clinton, but sources in the Palestinian leadership say he will not reject them.
The proposals represent a number of achievements for the Palestinians
compared to the offers made at Camp David, and it would be a pity for Arafat
to let them slip away.

However, if the Palestinian leader cannot reject them, he cannot accept them
either. Arafat and his aides "will consult and study the proposals in depth,"
as Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa put it yesterday - in other words
they will keep negotiating for improvements.

Arafat has a big problem. It is not Clinton's dwindling tenure, it is not Ehud
Barak's crumbling government, nor the election in Israel, nor even the
pressure from the Arab states that want calm in the region. Arafat's problem
is his people, who must surrender their right of return.

For the Palestinians, giving up the right of return is similar to Israel accepting
the 1967 borders and the division of Jerusalem - very difficult. Arafat and his
people know they will not be able to achieve this aspect of their dream - but
in return they demand a bigger price from Israel - a one-to-one ratio with
regard to giving up territory. "Do we have to give the settlers a prize and leave
them among us?" asked Dr. Mustafa Barghouti of the People's Party,
Arafat's coalition partners.

Not a single Palestinian spokesman could be found to praise the American
proposals yesterday, but there were plenty to criticize, including senior
Fatah and Palestinian Authority officials like Abu Ala.

Adnan Abu-Uda, a Jordanian Palestinian and former adviser to King Hussein,
made an interesting commentary on the American proposals. He told Qatari
television the Israelis had believed the Al Aqsa Mosque was the property of
their forefathers until the Al Aqsa Intifada came along - and the improved
bridging proposals in its wake.

A number of Palestinian journalists used his comment to illustrate the old
conventional wisdom of theirs - concessions can be wrested from the
Israelis, but only through force.

Arafat hesitates, Israel accepts U.S. bridging proposal

By Aluf Benn, Daniel Sobelman and Nitzan Horowitz
                  Ha'aretz Correspondents

Israel will accept the American bridging proposal in principle, but Palestinian
Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat said he is still studying it and "many
obstacles" remain in the way of an agreement.

"All of the sides are still studying the ideas proposed by the Americans,"
Arafat added in remarks broadcast on Palestinian television. "These ideas
require thorough study, since they include some positions not far from those
presented at the Camp David summit."

Because of the uncertainty over how Arafat will move, Prime Minister Ehud
Barak's peace cabinet, when it approved the American proposal Sunday
night, also decided Israel will submit its official response to U.S. President
Bill Clinton only after Arafat has done so.

Israel will submit a number of reservations about the plan - called "an outline
of principles" by U.S. officials - but Justice Minister Yossi Beilin said
yesterday that all of them are minor. The only member of the peace cabinet
who actually expressed reservations about saying "yes" to the American
proposal was Shimon Peres, who joined the cabinet this week. Unlike Beilin,
Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami and Meretz Chairman Yossi Sarid, Peres
said the concessions Israel made in Washington last week were too far-
reaching.

"What is all this celebration over these concessions?" he demanded. "This
undermines our position." But all the members of the peace cabinet said
Clinton's proposal still left several disputes unresolved:

l Israel wants partial sovereignty, or some other kind of rights, over the
underground reaches of the Temple Mount, where the remains of the Temple
lie buried. The Palestinians object.

l Israel wants to retain a narrow strip of the Jordan Valley for three years - the
Palestinians have agreed only to two.

l The Palestinians want 96 or 97 percent of the West Bank; the American
proposal offers only 95 percent. Barak will present the bridging proposal to
the security cabinet tomorrow before conveying his response to the
Americans. He also plans to meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak this
week to ask his help in persuading Arafat to accept the American proposals.
Ben-Ami has made similar requests to his colleagues in Jordan, Russia and
Europe, as well as to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Arafat briefed Mubarak on the details of the American bridging proposal in
Cairo yesterday, noting that he is holding ongoing consultations with both
Egypt and Jordan. Clinton also briefed Mubarak by telephone.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, who joined the meeting between
Mubarak and Arafat, afterward echoed the Palestinian leader's statement
that the sides are still examining the final-status proposals. The matter is
"serious and decisive," he said. "There is still a door open that could lead to
progress."

The United States, meanwhile, has stepped up the pressure on both Arafat
and Barak to say yes. Clinton warned both leaders yesterday that if they
said no, he would drop all further involvement in the negotiations. He added
that his proposals would become null and void if both parties did not accept
them as a basis for negotiations - meaning they might not necessarily
remain the American position in the future.

If both sides say yes, Clinton is preparing to receive both Barak and Arafat in
Washington this weekend, but he will meet them separately. Only if progress
is made in the separate talks would the discussions be transformed into a
summit meeting involving direct Barak-Arafat talks. Clinton has set January
10 as the deadline for reaching an agreement.

The Americans are increasingly optimistic about the talks, however. "The
'outline of principles' ... can lead to a good and fair agreement," an American
diplomatic source said yesterday. "The president [Clinton] is optimistic.

Focus / Sizing up the Wall

                  By Ze'ev Schiff

How long is the Western Wall? (Or is it the Wailing Wall?) Does it include
only the exposed structure where Jews pray, which is 58 meters long? Or
does the Western Wall mean the entire retaining wall to the west of the
Temple Mount?

This is one of the points of contention between Israel and the Palestinians in
the detailed negotiations over the future of Jerusalem and how to divide it.

The Palestinians demand that any diplomatic accord including the Western
Wall should define it by the minimal demarcation that corresponds to what is
often called the Wailing Wall - where Jews offer their prayers and
lamentations. By this definition, the Wailing Wall is confined to the structure
opposite the open plaza that Israel built after the Six-Day War in 1967.

Israel, on the other hand, prefers to call it the "Western Wall" and sees it
stretching beyond the plaza area. Starting from its southwest corner, this
wall runs 12 meters north to the Robinson Arch where excavations are in
hand. Among other archaeological finds, a 75-meter Herodian road has been
uncovered here.

The wall continues from there to the Moor's Gate and on to the Wailing Wall
itself, where Jews have prayed for generations. In fact, Jews across the world
turn to face this wall when they pray.

The wall continues from there to the Wilson Arch, where the plaza meets the
prayer area. After the Six-Day War, Israel invested considerable funds in
cleaning out the cavernous hall at the Wilson Arch and removing rubble.
Since that time, prayers have been said in this area. From the Wilson Arch,
there is an entrance to the Masonic Hall - also called the Hasmonean Hall
since it is dated to that period.

The Old City of Jerusalem is a very difficult issue that goes beyond the
dispute over the Temple Mount and the dimensions of the Wall. One
possibility is for each side to receive sovereignty over part of it - Muslims
getting sovereignty over the Temple Mount plaza, the Muslim quarter and the
Christian Quarter, while the Jews would have sovereignty over the Wall, the
Jewish Quarter and part of the Armenian Quarter.

A second possibility would be to sidestep the question of sovereignty, letting
each side manage its affairs as it does today. The Palestinians responded to
this suggestion by saying Israel could continue to hold and manage the Wall
and the Jewish Quarter, but sovereignty would be Palestinian.

This dispute extends to the question of the Jewish people's connection to the
Temple Mount. Even if the Palestinians receive sovereignty over the Temple
Mount, they say they would not sign an accord that includes a statement
confirming the Jewish people's historic and religious connection to the
Temple Mount. They would prefer a formulation saying the Jewish nation
"claims" that such a historic and religious connection exists.

Who gets sovereignty over Jerusalem's dead?

                  By Nadav Shragai
                  Ha'aretz Correspondent

Rumors - undenied - that the Barak government would cede sovereignty over
the Mount of Olives to the Palestinians have raised a storm among religious
and ultra-orthodox parties.

The mount, second only to the Temple Mount in importance in Judaic
tradition, has been for more than three thousand years the principal burial
ground for the Jews of Jerusalem. Among its gravestones, many of them
desecrated during the 19-year Jordanian occupation, lie many of the best-
known figures of Israel's modern history.

From the time of King David until the War of Independence the special
holiness of the mount, which appeared in the visions of the prophets Ezekiel
and Zacharia, made it the chosen burial place for most of the city's Jews and
for many who lived outside. Tradition says those buried on the mount will not
need to roll under the earth to reach the site of resurrection. Jewish tradition
also states the messiah will cross the Mount of Olives to reach the Temple
Mount.

Today Jewish cemeteries cover most of the mount's surface, divided into four
main cemeteries, plus a number of smaller burial plots belonging to particular
ethnic groups.

The ancient Sephardi cemetery, where Jews from all of Jerusalem's ethnic
communities were buried from the fourteenth century, became an exclusively
Sephardi cemetery from 1856 onward. Virtually all the great figures of the
oriental Jewish community up to the War of Independence are buried in this
cemetery, including Rabbi Haim Ben Atar ("Or Hahayim"), and the Kabbalist
Rabbi Shalom Sharabi.

The Cemetery of the General Hevra Kaddisha [burial society] was founded by
the "Mitnagdim" stream of orthodox Judaism. From 1856 until the War of
Independence the city's Ashkenazi Jews were buried here. Following the Six
Day War Jewish burials began again in this section - Menachem and Aliza
Begin are buried here.

Around 30 of the greatest Hassidic scholars of Jerusalem, including those of
the Gur and Viznitz schools, are buried in the Hassidic cemetery, which is
reserved exclusively for the Hassidic communities of the city.

The fourth cemetery, also founded by the General Hevra Kaddisha, was
active between 1939 and 1948, and contains the graves of prominent Jewish
figures from the period of the British mandate, including Pinhas Rutenberg,
Yehiam Weitz, and S.Y Agnon.

Following the War of Independence the cemetery was used again, and many
of Israel's most famous leaders and public figures are buried there, including
Henrietta Szold, Rabbi Kook, and Zevulun Hammer.

The Mount of Olives also has smaller burial sites of some of the city's
smaller communities, including Jews of North Africa, Grozny, Babylon,
Yemen, Iran, and Afghanistan.

During the 19 year-year period of Jordanian control over east Jerusalem
following the War of Independence, thousands of Jewish gravestones were
desecrated, smashed, or taken as building materials to build Arab houses in
east Jerusalem.

In recent years the east Jerusalem Development Company has invested
significant sums in the restoration of the area of the mount. It attracts
thousands of visitors each day, including Christians visiting the churches of
Dominus Flavit and Mary Magdalen, and Jews visiting the graves of their
loved ones.

Focus / Arafat's biggest headache

                  By Zvi Bar'el

Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat took advantage of his most recent visit
to the Jordanian capital Amman to undergo a periodic examination by his
doctor, Ashraf Al Kurdi, a neurologist of international renown. His doctor said
his patient should rest more because he is under great stress.

Arafat, 71, is not heeding his doctor's advice. Immediately following his visit
to Amman, he flew to Bethlehem to participate in the Christmas
celebrations, and then left for Cairo for a two-hour meeting with Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak.

Arafat has good reason to be tense. He is facing one of the most difficult
decisions in his life, and only he can make the choice. The right of return is
propelling Arafat on a collision course, not just with his people, the refugees
in the camps of the West Bank and Gaza, but also with the rest of the Arab
states.

As far as Arafat is concerned, this is a bigger problem than the issue of
Jerusalem. Whereas he can bring diplomatic pressure from the Arab and
Muslim world to bear on Israel and the U.S. on the Jerusalem question, the
issue of the refugees is solely a Palestinian problem.

Not a single Arab leader has demanded that Arafat not relinquish the right of
return, nor was he ever chastised for his intentions to reach a compromise
on the issue. Arab states, especially Jordan and Lebanon, fear that Arafat
will reach an agreement with Israel, leaving nearly 2 million Palestinian
refugees on their soil. Lebanon has already announced this week that it will
not allow the question of the refugees to be solved at "the expense of the
national rights of the Lebanese people." Jordan's prime minister made it
clear, three months ago, that his country is unwilling to absorb any more
Palestinian refugees. As far as they are concerned, the refugees can either
move to Palestine, when it is established, or find a place in Europe, Australia
or elsewhere.

On the other hand, Arafat realizes that even if he gives up the right of return,
he is in a bind. Assuming he manages to overcome domestic opposition,
especially among the refugees in the territories, and even if he unilaterally
declares an independent state, the minute such a state exists, the refugees
will demand the right to be absorbed there. Certainly, the Arab states hosting
them will be eager to point the way to the Palestinian state, their brotherly
obligations completed.

However, this is more than just a matter of ethical responsibility, because
Arafat lacks the resources to meet the economic and social needs of the
refugees. Jordan, Syria and Lebanon are wary of a possible popular
Palestinian uprising, if these refugees realize they have nothing to go back
to, no dream, no economic opportunity.

Jordan is particularly worried that Palestinian refugees may be driven from
Lebanon and Syria into its territory, the only direct link with the Palestinian
state.

In short, as one Jordanian commentator put it, "Arafat may find himself the
most hated man in the Arab world."

One possible solution is that Arafat could find a formula which releases Israel
from the historical responsibility for the creation of the refugee problem, while
presenting an appropriate compensation arrangement which will enable the
Palestinian state to absorb and fund the rehabilitation of the refugees.

Some have already suggested that Arafat adopt a similar stance to the one
adopted by Israel toward Germany. However, that still leaves the obstacle of
Israel's adamant refusal to accept any responsibility for the creation of the
refugee problem.

Sharon says he won't honor a Barak deal

                  By Yossi Verter
                  Ha'aretz Political Correspondent

Surrounded by the same people who wanted to replace him with Benjamin
Netanyahu only a week ago, and backed by a giant sign saying "only Sharon
will bring peace," Likud Chairman Ariel Sharon yesterday unveiled his
campaign team for the prime ministerial election.

Sharon promised the assembled Likudniks he would bring unity at home and
peace abroad as prime minister. He revealed no plans for achieving these
goals, however, but said his diplomatic-security campaign platform would be
announced later in the campaign.

One plank of this platform was determined earlier at a meeting with the
heads of other opposition parties - a Sharon-led government would not honor
any diplomatic agreement signed by Prime Minister Ehud Barak before the
elections, even at the risk of international furor.

"Prime Minister Barak has no moral or practical right to conclude fateful
diplomatic policies ... now that he has resigned as prime minister and has no
Knesset majority," the opposition leaders said in a statement afterward. "We
are determined to preserve our eternal capital and the holy places of Israel,
even at the cost of the possible complications now brewing in Barak's
kitchen."

Yesterday Sharon did not repeat the pledge he made to the Likud Central
Committee a week ago - if elected, he would form a unity government with
Labor in which Barak would be defense minister. This statement drew loud
boos from the central committee. Instead, Sharon merely said he would set
up a "broad coalition." This would, however, be difficult to do without Labor.

Sharon also declined to criticize Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert for his
vicious attack on Barak on Sunday, in response to reports that Barak had
agreed to give the Temple Mount to the Palestinians. Sharon said he had not
heard Olmert's words, "but I assume he spoke from his anger and pain at
seeing the terrible thing that is happening - the division of Jerusalem."

Sharon did however transmit a message to Netanyahu, who has said
repeatedly he will run for prime minister when new Knesset elections are
held, and that he expects this to happen soon.

"A government I head will serve its full term, until November 2003," Sharon
said, but he also called on Netanyahu to help his campaign. In a television
interview yesterday evening, Netanyahu said he would do so "to help defeat
Ehud Barak."

MK Silvan Shalom will head Sharon's campaign staff, with MK Reuven Rivlin
as deputy chair. MK Meir Sheetrit - the most left-leaning MK in the Likud -
will spearhead his information campaign, while MK Limor Livnat will head his
strategic planning staff.

On Sunday, Sharon had said Livnat would also be in charge of drafting his
"first 100 days" program, but yesterday he said this would be given to two
leading Netanyahu loyalists, MK Tzachi Hanegbi and Moshe Leon, who was
director-general of the Prime Minister's Office under Netanyahu.

Earlier, Sharon and other opposition leaders discussed the serious problem
he faces in trying to woo both the Haredim and the Russians, as any
statement on religion and state is likely to irritate one or the other. The same
is true of electoral reform - Sharon is an ardent supporter of scrapping direct
elections for prime minister, but many of the smaller parties he is courting
favor them.

To try to ease these problems, the party leaders agreed that on any
controversial issue, Sharon would support keeping the status quo.

Background / Custom mandates Knesset ratification=20=20

                  By Gideon Alon

Should Prime Minister Ehud Barak reach an agreement with the=20
Palestinians, he would be under no legal obligation to bring it to the Knes=
set=20
for approval: The Knesset has never enacted a general law requiring=20
parliamentary ratification of diplomatic agreements. The Knesset has passed=
=20
laws requiring certain types of territorial concessions to be ratified by=20
parliament, and one of these would impact on the proposed Israeli-
Palestinian agreement: the law requiring territorial concessions in Jerusal=
em=20
to be approved by an absolute majority of 61 MKs, which was passed just a=20
few weeks ago. The other such law requires 61 MKs to approve any=20
government decision whereby =93Israeli law ... will no longer apply to a gi=
ven=20
piece of territory.=94 This law would apply to the Golan Heights, but not t=
o the=20
West Bank or Gaza, as these territories were never brought under Israeli la=
w.=20
Thus the only part of the proposed agreement for which Barak would require=
=20
parliamentary approval is the section relating to Jerusalem.=20

Nevertheless, there is an ironclad tradition of bringing such pacts to the=
=20
Knesset for approval. This tradition was begun by then prime minister David=
=20
Ben-Gurion in 1949, when he asked the Knesset to approve the cease-fire=20
agreements with Egypt, Lebanon and Syria, and it has been honored by=20
every prime minister since.=20

Successive attorney generals have also issued opinions stating that althoug=
h=20
the prime minister is not legally obliged to submit such agreements for=20
Knesset ratification, it would be proper for him to do so from the good-
government perspective.=20

Finally, the cabinet approved a resolution in 1984 requiring all diplomatic=
=20
agreements to be presented to the Knesset for perusal at least 14 days=20
before the cabinet is due to vote on their ratification. While this resolut=
ion=20
does not require such agreements to be voted on by the Knesset, it does=20
ensure that Knesset members have time to mobilize public pressure against=20
any prime minister who chooses not to ask for parliamentary approval. The=20
Supreme Court has ruled that such cabinet resolutions are legally binding. =

Subject: [bprlist] Holy Grail and Ark of the Covenant hidden on a Baltic Island?
From: owner-bpr@philologos.org

Did a secret order of knights hide the Holy Grail, Ark of Covenant on
a Baltic island?

By PETER STARCK, Reuters
Dec. 25, 2000

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/forum/skyline.htm

COPENHAGEN -- The Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant may have
been hidden by a secretive religious order of crusaders, the Knights
Templar, on the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm some 830 years ago,
according to a new book.

The whereabouts of the grail and the ark -- legendary religious
relics of immeasurable value to Christian and Jewish believers --
have intrigued historians and archaeologists for centuries and films
about quests to locate them, notably the "Indiana Jones" series, have
thrilled movie audiences worldwide.

No one knows exactly what the relics actually are but the ark is
believed a box-type container that held the stone tablets inscribed
with the 10 commandments which Moses received from God on Mount
Sinai.

Legends differ about the Holy Grail but it is most widely thought to
be the chalice which Jesus and his apostles drank from at last supper
before he was crucified.

Some scholars speculate that treasures amassed by the Knights Templar
ended up in Rosslyn chapel in Scotland. Others have hinted at
locations in Ethiopia, Spain and Canada.

In a 194-page book "The Templars' Secret Island," Denmark's Erling
Haagensen and Henry Lincoln of Britain say medieval round churches
were built at sites on Bornholm based on the sacred geometry used by
the Knights Templar elsewhere in Europe, most famously at Rennes-le-
Chateau in southern France.

The book, studded with graphs, plots the churches' geometric layout
with mathematical precision and the authors suggest the design may be
a map to hidden treasures.

The Danish archbishop Eskil visited Knights Templar Grand Master
Bertrand de Blanchefort in France in 1162, nine years after the death
of his predecessor Bernard of Clairvaux.

The historically recorded purpose of Eskil's visit -- coming at a
time when the Knights Templar may have feared becoming vulnerable
because of the influential Bernard's demise -- was to prepare a
crusade against pagans inhabiting the Baltic Sea's northeastern coast
in what is today Estonia and Latvia.

The book suggests that Knights Templar who joined the Baltic crusade
built Bornholm's churches and may have taken the opportunity to stash
some treasures there.

"The need for a secure hiding place would have been paramount...It
would make sense to conceal whatever may have been the Order's
treasures in more than one place.

"Better still to provide a hiding place which was remote and had no
apparent connection with the Order. Bertrand's involvement in the
planning for the Baltic Mission would have offered him the perfect
opportunity. Bornholm...now becomes a trump card," says the book.

"It was small and easily controlled and protected. Above all, it was
remote, unknown, unlikely to be disturbed, not big enough or rich
enough to attract an errant warrior intent on carving out a kingdom,"
it continues.

UNIQUE CHURCHES LASTING HERITAGE

The European Templar Heritage Research Network (ETHRN), a non-profit
making association of scholars not affiliated to any religious or
political group, says it has been historically documented that the
order of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon -- the
full name of the Knights Templar -- was founded by aristocrats from
the French region of Burgundy early in the 12th century.

The order's classic round churches founded on octagonal geometry,
supposedly based on the design of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in
Jerusalem, are a lasting heritage of the Knights Templar era, the
ETHRN says.

Historical records and 20th century archaeological digs indicate that
a group of Knights Templar were searching for something under
Jerusalem's Temple Mount between 1118 and 1127.

Haagensen and Lincoln say that on returning to France in 1127 the
crusaders reported to Bernard of Clairvaux that their "mission" had
been accomplished.

A carving on a pillar at the cathedral in Chartres, France, suggests
the mission had been to find the Ark of the Covenant.

Legends say Mary Magdalen, to this day the village saint of Rennes-le-
Chateau, and Joseph of Arimathea, who according to the Bible buried
Jesus, took the Holy Grail to France.

Evidence of the belief in this tale is found in historical records
about the Nazis searching for the Holy Grail at Rennes-le-Chateau
during World War Two.

Backing up the theory that Knights Templar treasures may have been
hidden on Bornholm, the book says ancestors of the noblemen who
founded the order lived on this rocky 587 square km (226.7 square
miles) island, now part of Denmark and home to some 45,000 people.

BURGUNDIANS CAME FROM BORNHOLM

The authors point to a find of nearly 3,000 tiny, intricately carved
golden figures unearthed in a 1985-86 excavation of a Bornholm field
as lending credibility to their claim of a Bornholm connection.

The golden figures have been dated to AD 400-600 when the
Merovingians -- a clan of Frankish kings who claimed to be, like
Jesus, of the house and lineage of the Bible's King David -- were at
the height of their power. Descendants of the Merovingians later
settled in Burgundy.

The book also quotes a AD 417 work by Spanish historian Orosius,
which says the Burgundians came from Bornholm.

The Knights Templar viewed the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant
as their rightful possessions because of their bloodline to the House
of David, scholars say.

The equilateral six-sided shape which forms the star of David is part
of the geometric design formed by Bornholm's medieval churches, the
book by Haagensen and Lincoln shows.

"It is undeniable that those who planned and built the churches of
Bornholm knew exactly what they were doing and why they did it," the
authors say, adding the design "indicated a sure hiding place."

An excavation in 1995 to install heating ducts under the floor of
Oesterlars church, the biggest of Bornholm's round churches,
found "unusual and unexpected stone features...which might be
explained by the presence of an undiscovered crypt," the book says,
quoting the official renovation report.

Olsker, another church in the geometric pattern, also features
a "curious indication of a possible underground structure beneath a
staircase," the authors say.

"Neither of these subterranean anomalies has, thus far, been
investigated."

Subject: [bprlist] Genesis 49 Zodiac
From: Paul Albertsen
Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2000 13:16:02 -0800 (PST)

Might I be allowed to offer an unorthodox approach to
the Bible, suggesting that its story is based on a
numerical inner-structure? From the inherent meaning
of numbers, the Zodiac is an elaboration of that
meaning. It appears, for example, as the structural
framework of the story of the Quest for the Holy Grail
("Parzifal"). But it first appears fully in the Bible,
in Genesis 49:

Aries (0). Jacob (Israel) as father stands in the role
of God, creator.

Taurus (1) is the stage of the Fall from Unity (1).
Jacob's first-born son is Reuben, who, like Adam-and-
Eve (1) trespasses and falls from his father's grace.

Geminii-Cancer (2 and 3). Simeon and Levi. These two
numbers and signs are often linked together because of
their similarities. Both are offspring of the Fall (1)
and intervene between that number and the Restoration
of coherence (Leo 4). Jacob blames these two sons for
breaking up the unity of Taurus (1) the Bull or Ox:

"they hamstrung oxen...
I will divide them in Jacob, (Geminii, division)
and scatter them in Israel." (Cancer, multiplying)
                             (NRSV)

Cf. numbers Two and Three among the disciples of
Jesus. James and John are linked together as the
"Sons of Thunder" (Boanerges) in book Two of the
gospels. (Mark 3:17) And in book Three, Luke, the same
pair of numbers are linked as Simeon (2)and Anna (3).

And finally the same two numbers are joined together
in the book of Revelation, chapters Two and Three, in
which the letters to the churches are presented.

Next: As Leo (4) Judah is a lion.

Pisces (12). Zebulun dwells by the seashore, near a
haven of the farthest-sailing ships.

Virgo (5) is the Middle sign and number of the Torah
sequence:

 0 1 2 3 4 12 5 6 9 7 8 11 13

The middle tends to be motionless, tending neither
forward nor backward. Therefore Issachar is,
"lying down between the sheepfolds" (NRSV)
I.e. between the Rams, Aries (0) and Aries (13).

Libra (6). The name "Dan" means judging or justice,
fitting this position of the Scales of Justice.

Scorpio (9). Gad is making and suffering devilish
trouble. Translations refer to "the last" and "the
heels" and "the rear", even to "the extreme rear",
which is where a scorpion's sting is.

Sagittarius (7). Asher is rich, befitting this
Jupiter-ruled sign.

Capricorn (8). Naphtali can probably be called a
mountain-goat, as Hebrew "ayallah" apparently refers
to a general group of hooved animals. Cf. Psalm 18:33,

"He makes my feet like the feet of deer,
and sets me on my high places." (or on the heights)

What are deer doing on high places? Wouldn't mountain
goats be more likely?

Acquarius (11). As the new number One, number Eleven
is the stage of new unity or Reunion, of recovery from
the Fall. Appropriately, Joseph is the hero of such a
Reunion (with his father and brothers, Genesis 45.)

Aries (13). That leaves only Benjamin, in the role of
the Ram or shepherd. But what kind of shepherd is
Benjamin?

 "Benjamin is a ravenous wolf,
in the morning devouring the prey,
and at evening dividing the spoils."

 He is a false shepherd, a wolf-in-sheep's-clothing. A
false Thirteen. Where then shall we look for the true
Thirteen? He appears as the next major figure in the
Bible, in the next book (Exodus): Moses is the true
shepherd who leads his people out of bondage, through
the wilderness, and to the promised land.

In the New Testament, the four lists of the twelve
disciples are consistent in only two positions, the
first and the last. Peter is number One (Taurus) and
is appropriately described as a rock and foundation:
"you are petros, and on this petra I will
         build my Church." (Matthew 16-18)

Judas Iscariot is then in the same position as
Benjamin above, the false Aries Thirteen, the false
shepherd. And Jesus Christ appears as the True
Shepherd, beyond the twelve, even as was Moses.

Subject: [bprlist] Travelers follow the Three Wise Men
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>
Date: Tue, 26 Dec 2000 18:26:36 -0500

InfoBeat - Travelers follow the Three Wise Men

          By JAMIE TARABAY
          Associated Press Writer

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) - They traveled more than
1,000 miles
through Iraq, Syria, Jordan and the West Bank to recreate the
biblical journey of the Three Wise Men who came from the East to
pay homage to the baby Jesus two millennia ago.
Making their way into Bethlehem in a candlelight procession
Monday, a group of travelers following the footsteps of the Magi
managed to bring a glimmer of joy into an otherwise glum Christmas
Day for people living in the West Bank town revered as Jesus'
          birthplace.
``We wanted to honor Jesus on his 2,000th birthday,'' said
Robin
Wainwright of Cold Springs, Calif., who with his wife Nancy decided
eight years ago to embark on the two-month pilgrimage, recreating
          travel conditions in biblical times.
Wainwright, 59, with bright blue eyes and a flowing white
beard,
said he walked the entire distance because ``my back doesn't let me
ride camels.'' Wearing a keffiyeh headdress and dressed almost
entirely in white, he used a shepherd's cane as he trekked.
His wife rode an 8-foot tall camel bedecked with colorful
          saddlebags and travel rugs.
As traveling companions, the Wainwrights recruited an
entourage
from churches around the world, each with special skills, some 60
people in all. Some of their tasks had a distinctly modern twist.
``We have a cameraman to document the journey and update
the Web
site, and others were specialists in water purification, which were
projects we helped start when we traveled through Iraq,''
          Wainwright said.
The team followed the traditional route of the Magi, relying on
old maps and biblical accounts to plan their route, camping
overnight in Bedouin tents. Wainwright said they were welcomed in
          every country they entered.
``The reception we received was amazing, even in Iraq. Some
of
us are Americans, and they were welcoming and friendly to us all,''
          he said.
The travelers and 12 camels, each with a Bedouin attendant,
transformed Bethlehem Monday evening as they began their
procession
from Shepherds' Field just outside town _ where biblical accounts
say an angel appeared to herders _ to Manger Square, the town's
          main plaza.
Bethlehem's Christmas observances were muted this year in
mourning over the 13-week outbreak of violence in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip that has killed more than 345 people, most of them
Palestinians. But the group's arrival brightened an otherwise
          gloomy day.
Hundreds of people lined the streets as the travelers passed.
Women in headscarves waved from windows, and children screamed
in
delight, laughing as the camels snorted and reared.
Among the travelers was Peter Thiet from Sudan, wearing a
bold
purple costume and riding a camel. His nationality caused the group
delays at several borders, including Syria and Israel, as he
encountered difficulties acquiring visas to enter the countries.
``Peace be with you,'' he said in Arabic to a man and woman
with
their arms around two small girls.
The lights of the hundreds of candles, held by the travelers and
people watching the procession, flickered against the houses lining
the streets, while ``Silent Night'' in Arabic wafted from
          loudspeakers.
Wainwright slowed his step as he moved closer and closer to
the
end of a journey that began on Oct. 23 more than 1,000 miles south
          of Baghdad.
``I can't tell you how happy I am at this moment,'' he said.

PROTESTS

Shlomo Filber, Secretary-General of the Yesha Council, told Arutz-7 today
of the following protest activities planned for the coming days:

"Tomorrow morning, during the Cabinet meeting at which the decision [about
Clinton's proposals] will be made, we will be outside the Prime Minister's
office with a 'notable' protest activity... Tomorrow night, there will be a
Chanukah candle lighting ceremony at Lions' Gate, with the participation of
Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert; we will depart from the Western Wall plaza
at 6:30 PM for Lions' Gate - there too there will be a large protest activity
demanding that Israel retain Jerusalem and the Temple Mount... On
Thursday, there will be a major gathering of dozens of rabbis and hundreds of
yeshiva students at 10 AM at Yeshivat HaKotel, headed by former Chief
Rabbis Shapira and Eliyahu; after Minchah service at around noon, we will go
out to encircle the Temple Mount, from Dung Gate to the direction of Lions'
Gate... Next Wednesday, there will be a giant mass demonstration, at the
foot of the Old City on Highway #1..."

A 15-car convoy, together with a bus, set out from Psagot for Jerusalem this
morning, in protest of several aspects of the current situation: the three-
month old security dangers facing the residents, the conducting of
negotiations while shooting continues, the willingness to give away sacred
Jewish sites, and more. The convoy passed the IDF Square on Jaffa Rd.
near the Old City, then to the Prime Minister's home, and to Ramat Eshkol.

The Land of Israel front in the Knesset convened today, for the first time in a
year and a half, and met with extra-Parliamentary right-wing activists. The
group's chairman, MK Tzvi Hendel, said that the Front will not allow Barak to
carry out a "fast one" for which the entire country will pay dearly: "If Barak
caves in to the Palestinian demands on Jerusalem and Yesha, he will
encounter a determined public outcry that he will not be able to ignore."

AFSI (Americans for a Safe Israel), together with other organizations, will be
sponsoring nationwide Chanukah vigils of solidarity for Israel's peace and
security. The events will be held on the last night of Chanukah, this coming
Thursday night. Participants will remember Israel's 40+ victims of Arab
terrorism since Sept. 2000, and will proclaim, "Jerusalem is not for giving.
The Temple Mount has belonged to the Jews for over 3,500 years, and
belongs to all future Jewish generations... Barak acts alone against his
people and everything that Chanukah stands for." In addition to New York
(59th St. & 5th Ave., 5:30-7:30 PM), vigils are scheduled for Miami, Florida;
San Francisco, California; Portland, Oregon, and possibly Washington, DC,

AGAINST GIVING AWAY PARTS OF THE NEGEV

Shmulik Rifman, head of the Ramat Negev Regional Council and a member
of the Labor Party, objects strenuously to one of the less-publicized aspects
of the budding Israeli-Palestinian agreement: the give-away of part of the
Negev - specifically, the Halutza Sands - to the Palestinian Authority. This
area is designed to compensate the Palestinians for the areas of Judea and
Samaria that Israel will retain, such as Pisgat Ze'ev, Gilo, and Ma'aleh
Adumim. Rifman said he is against the idea for several reasons: "Giving
away this area means that we are essentially going back to the Partition
Plan of 1947 [which, because the Arabs did not accept it, led to the War of
Independence in 1948, in which Israel gained more territory in borders that
were internationally recognized]. For years the argument amongst us has
been whether to return to the 1967 borders or not - but here we're going back
to the 1947 borders! This means that no border of Israel is safe... Secondly,
I am against the idea from a security standpoint. The towns that today
straddle the border are already in a dangerous position - now we'll cause a
whole new group of towns to be put into this situation. I assume that there
will be peace - but even so, we live in Eretz Yisrael, and we know that things
happen..."

Rifman said that he has so far not had success in getting the Negev
residents to begin public protests, but he will continue trying this week: "We
are losing the Negev, especially to the Bedouin, who are snatching up every
empty spot. Instead of developing it, we are giving it away."

PRISONER TALKS CONTINUE

Deputy Defense Minister Ephraim Sneh says that the talks with Hizbullah
over the release of the four captured Israelis are continuing. He said that he
had met with Austrian officials over the past weeks in an effort to form
another channel of communication with Hizbullah. Austrian government
officials say that they know that the three Israeli soldiers are alive; Israel will
not confirm claims of this sort until it has first-hand proof.

ELON EQUATES VOTE FOR SHARON WITH VOTE FOR TEMPLE MOUNT

"What is needed now is a massive outpouring of support for Ariel Sharon,"
MK Benny Elon said today. "We must come out en-masse and vote for
him, in order to show that just the very talk of giving away the Temple Mount
is totally unacceptable to us." Elon said that the situation is patently
absurd: "Can you imagine if there was a right-wing Prime Minister who had
the support of only 29 MKs, and who then annexed all of Judea and
Samaria? Can you imagine the outcry?" MK Elon said that Prime Minister
Barak is putting the State of Israel in a very dangerous situation:

"Ariel Sharon [who has declared that he will not fulfill any agreement
initialed by Barak] is about to be elected by a wide margin, and then the
entire world will say that we are a nation of war, that we have rejected a
signed or initialed international agreement. If we then start explaining that
Barak only initialed it, or that he did not have a majority, who will pay
attention?"

OLMERT TO MOVE TO WALL

Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert has decided to transfer his office to the
Western Wall. All the Mayor's meetings between this Thursday and next
Thursday will be held at his Western Wall office. Olmert will remain in
his office until the eve of the Fast of the Tenth of Tevet, which
commemorates the beginning of the destruction of the First Holy Temple -
the site of which the Western Wall was built 2000 years ago to buttress.

KETUBBOT ON THE INTERNET

One of the largest and most valuable collections of beautifully illustrated
ketubbot (marriage contracts) in the world can now be seen on its owner's
Internet website - "http://jnul.huji.ac.il" - that of the Hebrew University's
Jewish National and University Library. The collection includes more than
1,200 original ketubbot from 60 different countries, covering a time period of
over 900 years. The detailed art of each ketubbah can be viewed, as can the
names of the married couple and other facts, and individual ketubbot can be
searched for by country, city, date and names. The library hopes to add
more ketubbot in order to create a true world depository of ketubbot on the
Internet.

Comment: FM Ben Ami's declaration of end of territorial Zionism leaves open
questions

Aaron Lerner Date: 26 December, 2000

Israel Radio reported today that Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami said
this afternoon that "Israel had reached the end of Zionism's
territorial stage." Ben-Ami made the statement during a Hanukkah
candle lighting ceremony this afternoon with Foreign Ministry
employees in Jerusalem.

Ben Ami's declaration opens the door for major savings in the budget.

Immigration would no longer be relevant since, if according to
Ben-Ami, Zionism is no longer concerned with location, one would
assume there is no reason to encourage Jews to move to a particular
location in the world.

But this is only the beginning. Since territory is no longer relevant
there is no need for a Jewish state to exist in a physical location.
Instead a "virtual state" could be created (perhaps at
www.virtualisrael ?). No need for expensive armies, police, etc.

Yes, Ben-Ami's statement certainly sounds incredible. But just as
incredible is the simple question: Why did Ben-Ami only share this
revelation today?

And the answer? Ben-Ami is not sharing with us the results of a
serious intellectual process. Instead he is trying to back into a
justification of the results of his disastrous failure.

Ben-Ami's intellectual process in this case is no more serious than
that of a five-year-old child denied a toy who replies "I really do
not want it any more."

> This is a telephone interview which took place just prior to Drunvalo's
> travels to Europe in March 1999. Because Drunvalo was excited about so
many
> things we chose to focus on one of Drunvalo's favorite
subjects...children.
>
>
> Diane: So Drunvalo...who are these "Children of the New Dream" that you
are
> so excited about?
>
> Drunvalo: Well there are 3 different kinds of children emerging in the
world
> today that I have been able to identify. The first are called the "Super
> Psychic Children of China". The second are called the "Indigo Children"
and
> the third are called the "Children of AIDS".
>
> The first one, the "Super Psychics of China", we talked about in the
Flower
> of Life seminars. If you remember, the first one was discovered in 1984
when
> a child was found who was psychic beyond belief. Researchers conducted
every
> psychic test you could imagine and he was 100% correct every time. You
could
> turn cards over in another room and that didn't matter. He could perfectly
> know what was on the card.
>
> So Omni magazine went to China and wrote an article on this discovery.
They
> found one child and then another. When they went in 1984 they assumed it
was
> a hoax so they did experiments like putting 100 kids in a room and taking
a
> book and randomly pulling out a page. They would crumple it up and stick
it
> under their arm. These kids could read every word on the page.
>
> They did test after test, and the response was flawless. The phenomena
> didn't stop there. These kids are not just in China. They have spread all
> over the world. I personally have been talking to parents who ask me,
> "...what do we do.. I have a kid who knows everything?" I believe Lee

>
> It is the third group that I am most interested in - the Children of AIDS.
> About 10 or 11 years ago in the US, there was a baby born with AIDS. They

> He was taken to UCLA to see what was going on and those tests showed that
he
> didn't have normal human DNA. In the human DNA we have 4 nucleic acids
that

codons.
> Human DNA all over the world always has 20 of these codons turned on and
the

raising

> Then they found another kid with these codons turned on - then another one

at

> people who are not human by the old criteria.
>
> Diane: Is this new codon activation found only in newborn children?
>
> Drunvalo: Well, it's mostly children, but now they are finding adults with

are

> It's like an outbreak and this is only the beginning.

a

this

>
> At the workshops I'm going to do, I'm going to bring everything I've
learned
> together and teach people to actually access this and make the change. I
> think I know - or I'm very close.
>
> Diane: And that has to do with putting yourself in a certain state of
> consciousness?
>
> Drunvalo: Yes, a very specific state of consciousness produces a change in
> your DNA - and I think it's just the beginning of much more than that. The
> fact that it could be the end of disease is just a tiny bit of the total
> picture.
>
> Diane: How would this particular kind of work and discovery affect the DNA
> activation work that seems to be popping up all over?
>
> Drunvalo: Well, if you know your light body and you know how psychic
energy
> works and if you understand the connection of the subconscious to all life
> on this planet, then you can go in and ask your subconscious. Your
> subconscious knows exactly which codons those kids have changed and if you
> ask for those things to happen through your light body and in the presence

> People's DNA is really changing. There have been many of us who have

STONES THAT KILL

Three American teenagers have been convicted of murder in Germany for
throwing large stones onto a German motorway from a pedestrian overpass,
killing two motorists.

In February, the youths dropped a 10-pound rock on a Mercedes-Benz driven
by Karin Rothermel, 41. The rock hit her chest, killing her instantly. Minutes
later, they dropped an 18-pound stone on a BMW driven by Sandra Ottmann,
20. The stone smashed the windshield and hit her in the head. Five other
people suffered minor injuries and six cars were damaged.

The murder verdict shows not only that stones can kill, but that the world
considers it a serious crime.

The teenagers are the children of American soldiers stationed in Germany as
part of NATO forces. Lawyers for the teenagers argued that they had never
intended to kill anybody, but merely viewed the events as if they were playing
a computer game.

ARABS DISRUPT JEWISH EVENTS

Last month, all public appearances by former prime minister Binyamin
Netanyahu in the San Francisco area were cancelled. Netanyahu was due to
speak in Berkeley but security officials called off the appearance as rowdy
pro-Palestinian demonstrators prevented the crowds from entering the hall.
Scheduled appearances in San Rafael and San Mateo were also cancelled
because security forces said they could not ensure the safety of Netanyahu
or the public.

Meanwhile in Australia, Palestinian protesters shouted "Nazis" and "child
murderers" as members of Sydney's Jewish community arrived at a Jewish
National Fund dinner to raise money for irrigation projects in the Galilee. The
guest speaker at the dinner was Israeli Colonel Raanan Gissin.

A protester from the Palestinian Human Rights Campaign, Maher Mughrabi,
said: "These people should be ashamed to attend such a function which
effectively provides money for the Israeli state to continue its oppression of
our people." Mughrabi said that Colonel Gissin is "part of a machine that
murders people, that dispossesses people and destroys people's lives."

BURGER WARS & WEATHER MAPS

An Israel Update subscriber writes:

"I was interested to see your report about McDonalds. In my role as a
journalist for a Jewish newspaper, I wanted to do a local follow-up on the
story. First I checked the McDonalds website. I had no problem at all
accessing information about the company's presence in Israel (just go to the
Country Sites section, type in Israel and off you go). Perhaps McDonalds
has changed its website because of our community's pressure? Perhaps the
original report was a hoax?

"Please don't misunderstand me: Together with my colleagues, I have been
working flat out to bring our community something approximating the truth
about the situation in Israel in the face of ignorant, misinformed and skewed
mainstream media coverage. It's an uphill struggle and, personally, I really
appreciate the work that Aish is doing in this respect. Please see my
contribution as trying to keep our work as accurate as possible so we're not
exposed to criticism from the Marxists, neo-Nazis, Muslims and Arabs who
are constantly watching us and waiting for us to slip up."

Israel Update replies:

Thank you for writing. Last month, Israel was indeed excluded from the
McDonalds web site, but apparently this was due to a decision made by the
Israeli franchise owners, not McDonalds. In the meantime, the Israel listing
has been reinstated.

Many Israel Update subscribers have also written regarding our report that
Wal-Mart is selling "World Atlas" globes which have "Palestine" printed in
place of Israel. Actually, the globes list both "Israel" and "Palestine." Yet for
a globe, this is considered inaccurate -- since there is no geographic entity
called Palestine, just a Palestinian Authority.

In the meantime, the popular web site weather.com has begun listing "West
Bank" as an independent country, alongside Egypt, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
Users can view weather forecasts for Bethlehem, Hebron, Nabulus,
Qalandiyah and Ram Allah. See for yourself at:
http://www.weather.com/intl/regions_index/Middle_East_region.html

Israel Update encourages readers to be alert for similar violations. Your
efforts can be effective in setting the record straight. In August, CNN came
under fire and eventually returned Jerusalem to its place beneath the "Israel"
heading on its weather map.

UPDATE: TIME'S "FIELDS OF FIRE"

Regina Zavier of Albuquerque, New Mexico, writes to the editors of Time
Magazine:

"What an interesting way to describe Palestinian shooting attacks on Israelis
-- 'bullets harmlessly whizzing by.' How about I stand outside your house and
shoot at your family? Having never fired a gun in my life, I'm sure to be a
pretty bad shot. You won't mind, will you?"

Another Israel Update subscriber writes:

"I tried to email Time with this message: 'Your December 10 article was so
biased and full of misinformation about the present Israeli-Palestinian conflict
that I will never read your mag again, and will urge the same of all others I
meet.' The email was returned undeliverable -- mailbox full.

Israel Update replies:

Apparently the Time editors have been on vacation, and the flood of
complaints overwhelmed their system. Try sending the email again in a few
days.

6) ARGUING THE PALESTINIAN POSITION

BBC anchor Clair Bolderson advocated violence against Israel in a December
12 interview with Palestinian human rights campaigner Bassem Eid.

Bolderson (the BBC journalist) argues: "The Palestinian people are the
people who are rising up against what they see as the Israeli occupation, the
brutality of the Israelis. Are you saying they just shouldn't do that at all --
that they should be just completely peaceful and quiet?"

Eid (the Palestinian) replied that Palestinian attacks were counterproductive,
succeeding only in provoking Israeli retaliation. He noted that "we signed an
agreement with the Israelis... to put an end to the conflict... [via] the peace
talks and the peace process -- rather than doing the shootings."

But Bolderson (the BBC journalist) pressed on: "But aren't we just seeing a
spontaneous uprising of the people who are frustrated with the process, with
the fact that the peace process hasn't moved forward? Are you saying that
they should keep their frustrations bottled up, that they shouldn't take to the
streets?"

In this sham of an "interview," Bolderson encourages violence and violates
every rule of objectivity.

CNN CHECK-UP

CNN reports:

"The death toll rose despite a late-night, high-level meeting in Gaza that
brought fresh hopes for the resumption of peace negotiations, which
sputtered out at Camp David, Maryland, in July when Israeli Prime Minister
Ehud Barak and Palestinian Authority president Yasser Arafat could not
reach an agreement."

CNN frames Camp David as if both sides share equal responsibility for the
breakdown of talks. Even President Clinton, the even-handed mediator,
criticized Arafat for his refusal to accept Barak's offer, or even to negotiate a
counter-offer.

"...The [violent] scene was repeated inside the Old City, where Israel
enforced an age and residency requirement to enter the mosque at Haram al-
Sharif, the Noble Sanctuary."

CNN presents the Israeli strictures as if they are oppressive. In fact, Israel
tightened security in order to minimize Palestinian-led violence, hence
minimizing Palestinian casualties.

"The Muslims share the site -- the third holiest in the world of Islam -- with
Jewish worshipers, who call the hilltop location the Temple Mount, once
home to the ancient Jewish temple."

CNN makes certain to mention that the Temple Mount is Islam's "third
holiest" site, yet fails to mention the more obvious fact that it is Judaism's
single holiest site.

Subject: [bprlist] First Cells, Then Species, Now the Web

First Cells, Then Species, Now the Web
By GEORGE JOHNSON

As the Internet continues to proliferate, it has become natural to think of it
biologically as a flourishing ecosystem of computers or a sprawling brain of
Pentium-powered neurons. However you mix and match metaphors, it is hard
to escape the eerie feeling that an alien presence has fallen to earth,
confronting scientists with something new to prod and understand.

The result has been an eruption of papers scrutinizing this artificial network
and concluding, to many people's surprise, that it may be designed
according to the same rules that nature uses to spin webs of its own. The
networks of molecules in a cell, of species in an ecosystem, and of people in
a social group may be woven on the same mathematical loom as the Internet
and the World Wide Web.

"We are getting to understand the architecture of complexity," said Dr. Albert-
Laszlo Barabasi, a physicist at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana
whose research group has recently published papers comparing such
seemingly diverse systems as the Internet and the metabolic networks of life-
sustaining chemical reactions inside cells. The similarities between these
and other complex systems are so striking, he said, "it's as if the same
person would have designed them."

At the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Dr. Ricard V. Sol
and Jose M. Montoya, theoretical biologists in the Complex Systems
Research Group, have recently found the same kind of patterns by studying
computer models of three ecosystems: a freshwater lake, an estuary and a
woods. "These results suggest that nature has some universal organizational
principles that might finally allow us to formulate a general theory of complex
systems," said Dr. Sol , who also works at the Santa Fe Institute in New
Mexico.

In the past, scientists treated networks as though they were strung together
at random, giving rise to a homogeneous web in which nodes tended to have
roughly the same number of links. "Our work illustrates that in fact the real
networks are far from being random," Dr. Barabasi said. "They display a high
degree of order and universality that has been rather unexpected by any
accounts."

As they come together, many networks seem to organize themselves so
that most nodes have very few links, and a tiny number of nodes, called
hubs, have many links. The pattern can be described by what scientists call
a power law. To calculate the probability that a node will have a certain
number of links, you raise that number to some power, like 2 or 3, and then
take the inverse.

Suppose, for example, that you have a network with 100,000 nodes that
obeys a power law of 2. To find out how many nodes have three links, you
raise 3 to the second power, which is 9, and then take the inverse. Thus one-
ninth of the nodes, or about 11,111, will be triple linked. How many will have
100 links? Raise 100 to the second power, and take the inverse: one ten-
thousandth of the 100,000 nodes a total of 10 will be so richly connected.
As the number of connections rises, the probability rapidly falls.

This kind of structure may help explain why networks ranging from
metabolisms to ecosystems to the Internet are generally very stable and
resilient, yet prone to occasional catastrophic collapse. Since most nodes
(molecules, species, computer servers) are sparsely connected, little
depends on them: a large fraction can be plucked away and the network will
endure. But if just a few of the highly connected nodes are eliminated, the
whole system could crash.

Not everyone believes that a universal law is at hand. A recent paper by
Boston University physicists found deviations from the power-law pattern in a
number of different networks, suggesting a more complicated story. But even
so, the study found hidden orders that were far more interesting than the
purely random patterns scientists have long used to analyze networks.

"The important point is that the networks are very different from our familiar
model systems," said Dr. Mark Newman, a mathematician at the Santa Fe
Institute. "This means that all our previous theories have to be thrown out."

It has only been in recent years that computer power has grown enough to
gather and analyze data on such intricate systems. In a highly publicized
paper in 1998, Dr. Duncan Watts, a sociologist at Columbia University, and
Dr. Steven Strogatz, an applied mathematician at Cornell University, found
that many networks exhibited what they called the small-world phenomenon,
popularized in John Guare's play "Six Degrees of Separation."

Just as any two people can be linked by a chain of no more than about six
acquaintances, so can any node in a small-world network be reached from
any other node with just a few hops. The two scientists found this hidden
order in three networks that could hardly seem more different: the web of
neurons forming the simple nervous system of the worm Caenorhabditis
elegans, the web of power stations forming the electrical grid of the Western
United States and (the finding that attracted the most attention) the web of
actors who have appeared together in films.

The phenomenon has been popularized by a Web site, the Oracle of Bacon,
at the University of Virginia's computer science department
(www.cs.virginia.edu/oracle/) that calculates how closely an actor is linked to
the film star Kevin Bacon. Patrick Stewart of Star Trek fame, for example,
has a "Bacon number" of 2: he was in "The Prince of Egypt" with Steve
Martin, who was in "Novocaine" with Kevin Bacon.

More recently Dr. Barabasi, working with a graduate student, Reka Albert,
and a post-doctoral researcher, Dr. Hawoong Jeong, found that the World
Wide Web is a small world a phenomenon also noticed by two researchers
at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center in California, Dr. Bernardo A.
Huberman and his student Lada A. Adamic. Any two documents or sites on
the Web are separated by only a small number of mouse clicks.

The two teams also noted that the Web was structured according to a power
law, with a handful of highly connected hubs and a steadily increasing
number of less connected nodes a fact noticed by other groups as well.

Reaching further, Dr. Barabasi and Ms. Albert found, in a paper last fall in
Science, that a variety of networks may be organized this way. Included in
their list were the small worlds of Dr. Watts and Dr. Strogatz as well as the
connections on a computer chip and a network of citations in scientific
publications.

The question is how this kind of order arises. In the same paper, the
Barabasi group proposed a "rich get richer" effect: as new nodes are added
to a network, they tend to form links with ones that are already well
connected. New actors are more likely to be cast in films with well-known
actors. New scientific papers are more likely to cite well-established ones.
The result, according to their model, is a power-law distribution.

Their most recent sighting of the pattern was described in the Oct. 5 issue of
Nature. Dr. Barabasi and his team worked with two members of the
Northwestern University Medical School department of pathology to study
the shape of metabolisms, the networks of chemical reactions inside living
cells. Small molecules are linked to form large molecules, which are in turn
broken back down into small molecules. But complex as these networks can
be, they seem to obey a power law. In a paper recently submitted to the
Journal of Theoretical Biology, Dr. Sol and Dr. Montoya found a similar
pattern in the ecosystems they studied.

The implication is that all these networks are extremely robust, shrugging off
most disturbances, but vulnerable to a well-planned assault. "A random
knockout of even a high fraction of nodes will not damage the network," Dr.
Barabasi said. "But malicious attacks can."

Suggestive as the new theory is, other scientists are finding that the picture
may not be so simple. In a paper published in October in the Proceedings of
the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Luis A. Nunes Amaral and his
colleagues at Boston University analyzed a number of networks, including
some of those studied by the Barabasi group. The list also included the hubs
and spokes of the world airport system and two small friendship networks
formed by a group of Mormons and by junior high school students. They
concluded that while some networks obey power laws, in many others the
pattern is distorted or nonexistent.

The deviations arise, the study proposed, because it is not always easy to
add new nodes to a net: actors with more movie credits will attract more and
more collaborators until they get too old to act at all. Airports can only
support so many new flights a day. Because of such complications, a
network may fall somewhere on a spectrum between the extremes of
randomness and order.

Researchers are optimistic that they will sort out the details of a discipline
that is still in its infancy. More important than any particular study, Dr. Watts
said, is that scientists finally have the computer power to study real
networks instead of just speculating about idealized ones.

"The real point is not to establish that everything is a power law," he said,
"but to start modeling complex networks in a way that is informed by the
data."

Subject: [bprlist] Barak wants to meet Arafat this weekend
From: "research-bpr" <research-bpr@philologos.org>

Barak wants to meet Arafat this weekend=20=20

By Aluf Benn, Amira Hass, Nitzan Horowitz and Dalia Sheho=
ri
                  Ha'aretz Correspondents

Prime Minister Ehud Barak wants to meet with Palestinian Authority=20
Chairman Yasser Arafat this weekend before they both leave for the United=20
States, assuming that Arafat agrees to continue negotiating on the basis of=
=20
the American bridging proposals.=20=20

Barak has already decided to accept the proposals, with some minor=20
reservations, but it is still unclear what Arafat will decide. A senior=20
Palestinian official said yesterday that a detailed perusal of the proposal=
s=20
Monday night left most of the Palestinian leadership deeply upset.=20=20

Both men are supposed to submit their official responses to U.S. President=
=20
Bill Clinton today; if both say yes, they will be invited to Washington for=
=20
separate meetings with Clinton over the weekend. Arafat is scheduled to fly=
=20
Friday and meet with Clinton on Saturday; Barak would fly Saturday night=20
and meet with Clinton on Sunday. If these meetings go well, both men would=
=20
stay on in Washington for a summit.=20=20

Barak's office is currently trying to arrange the Arafat meeting with the=20
Palestinian leader's office. Gilad Sher, Barak's bureau chief, has met with=
=20
several senior Palestinian officials over the last two days. Barak and Araf=
at=20
have not seen each other since the Sharm al-Sheikh summit more than two=20
months ago, and have not had a face-to-face conversation since before the=20
current Intifada began in September.=20=20

Arafat is supposed to meet again today with Egyptian President Hosni=20
Mubarak, who, according to the senior Palestinian official, has already tol=
d=20
Arafat that he will never get a better deal by peaceful means. "By war,=20
maybe, but through peaceful methods, no," the source quoted Mubarak as=20
saying.=20=20

Arafat will also meet today with the Palestinian leadership in Gaza and wit=
h=20
the Arab Monitoring Committee in Tunis.=20=20

Yasser Abed Rabbo, a member of the Palestinian negotiating team, took the=20
Palestinians' reservations public yesterday in an interview with Voice of=20
Palestine radio station. Some of the American proposals, he said, are=20
identical to those raised at the Camp David summit this July, while others=
=20
are actually a retreat from Camp David. The parts that favor the Israeli=20
position are clear, he added, but everything related to the Palestinians' r=
ights=20
is vague, "so that the proposal lacks the necessary element of balance." =
=20

Abed Rabbo claimed that Clinton's territorial map is based on the=20
settlements rather than on the pre-1967 borders, and said the Palestinians=
=20
would not accept a solution that gave them sovereignty over the top of the=
=20
Temple Mount while leaving Israel with sovereignty underneath the mount. He=
=20
also said the Palestinians could not declare "an end to the conflict" witho=
ut a=20
full regional agreement that included Syria and Lebanon, and certainly not =
on=20
the basis of a mere framework agreement whose detailed implementation=20
still needed to be worked out.=20=20

American officials, in contrast, claimed that Arafat is eager to obtain an=
=20
agreement, for fear that otherwise, the violence in the territories will in=
crease=20
over the next few months, thereby leading to Likud Chairman Ariel Sharon's=
=20
election as prime minister.=20=20

A senior administration official insisted that the deal was good for both s=
ides:=20
It would give the Palestinians a viable state, and it would give Israel "th=
e=20
largest Jerusalem in Jewish history."=20=20

Barak, like Arafat, also has a marathon series of meetings on the American=
=20
proposals planned for today. This morning, the security cabinet will conven=
e=20
to discuss the proposals, with those ministers who are not part of this for=
um=20
being invited to attend as observers. The purpose of the meeting is primari=
ly=20
to brief the ministers, though the forum will also vote on the principles o=
f=20
Israel=92s response to Clinton. It will not, however, approve the detailed =
wording=20
of this response. With the exception of Health Minister Roni Milo (Center=20
Party), who has already announced his opposition, all of the ministers are=
=20
expected to support the American document.=20=20

Afterward, Barak will meet with several other bodies: the =93peace cabinet,=
=94=20
with which he will discuss the formulation of Israel=92s response in more d=
etail;=20
the =93Sareinu=94 forum of Labor Party ministers; and professional security=
=20
officials such as the heads of Military Intelligence and the Shin Bet secur=
ity=20
service.=20=20

Tomorrow, Barak will fly to Cairo to meet Mubarak, and Foreign Minister=20
Shlomo Ben-Ami will leave for Jordan the same day. Speaking at a=20
ceremony at the President=92s Residence yesterday to honor outstanding=20
policemen, Ben-Ami said that Israel can =93live with=94 the U.S. proposals =
on the=20
Palestinian refugees.=20=20

Clinton, meanwhile, has already briefed President-elect George Bush on the=
=20
details of his proposal, and Bush apparently approved the document. Bush=92=
s=20
foreign policy team has also not raised any objections to Clinton=92s effor=
ts.=20=20

"...So Omni magazine went to China and wrote an article on this discovery.
they found one child and then another. When they went in 1984..."

This, at first blush, doesn't pass the smell test (especially the guru's last
name). Can somebody provide a reference to the Omni article? Finding the
article referenced would greatly allay my suspicions. (I would also note the
date of the tests, 1984-ish, pre-world wide web proficiency, makes a normal
search all but useless). However, surviving the above scrutiny and found valid
and accurate this WOULD, and SHOULD, "cause a stir". But until valid
references are found, most likely the spawn of an urban legend, SSG
