* MICROSOFT ADMITS WEB VULNERABILITY: Enthusiastic
Microsoft engineers placed a secret message inside key
Microsoft software for Internet sites, calling
Netscape engineers "weenies." This happened at least
three years ago, when Microsoft and Netscape were
battling it out for Internet software dominance, but
it wasn't discovered, or revealed, until this week.
The trouble with the secret code, Microsoft admitted
today, is that it "inadvertently" opens a so-called
"back door" in Microsoft software used by many Web
sites -- one that could be used by a hacker to gain
access to all sort of files at a Web site, including
customer credit-card numbers and passwords. Microsoft
said it is warning all its customers and urging them
to delete a computer file -- dvwssr.dll -- that
contains the engineers' boast. So far there have been
no reports that the flaw has been exploited by anyone.
