Subject: [BPR] - FYI: 'Trojan horse' program steals passwords
From: bpr-list@philologos.org(BPR)
Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1999 08:27:52 -0500
From: <owner-bpr@philologos.org>
'Trojan horse' program steals passwords
A free e-mail program called ProMail is stealing users' names and
passwords and sending them to an unknown person.
The information allows simple access to the victims' messages.
The recipient is presumably the creator of what is termed a
"Trojan horse" virus. A teenager called "David" has claimed
responsibility in an e-mail to Ken Williams, who runs Packet
Storm Security, a Web security site.
The message was sent from an anonymous address and so
cannot be verified.
"I just wanted to increase the public's awareness on the problem
of Internet privacy," the "David" character said.
"If a program written by a teenager can be spread SO EASILY
over the Net, unchecked, and even be used by the Armed Forces,
then something must be wrong.
"But let me assure all you people using ProMail, I did not use,
store, sell or do anything with your passwords or other data.
And I did not download your mail."
Security implications
In an e-mail earlier this week, Ken Williams said: "The security
implications and severity of the situation are truly astounding."
He believes hundreds of thousands of account names and
passwords may have been harvested by ProMail. Some in the
Net security community think it is the most widely distributed
Trojan ever.
ProMail v1.21 has been widely available through major freeware
sites such as shareware.com and simtel.net. It has been made
available on at least 114 other sites and it is impossible to know
when, even if, it will be removed from all sites.
The virus works by gathering the username, password and server
name for the 'POP3' system, which transfers e-mail from the server
to the user, and then packages the information up and sends it all
off in an e-mail.
Ian Whalley, Senior Programmer with UK anti-virus software
company Sophos PLC, told BBC News Online: "POP3 is very
prevalent these days - it's in use everywhere."
Nightmare problem
"On the face of it, private e-mail is the major problem, as
corporations tend not to use POP3. But it's very hard to tell as it
is very widely used.
"A Trojan horse in this type of application is new. You could in
theory disinfect it, but there are plenty of other e-mail clients out
there, so it's best just to get rid of ProMail."
Whalley says wiping ProMail from the Web will be extremely
hard: "You could trace all the logs back but it would be a
nightmare."
ProMail's creator used open source code for the core program,
which works very well. He then inserted the Trojan horse.
The program seems to have been made available around 24
February. The problem was first publicised on the Bugtraq news
group on 19 March by Aeon Labs and was confirmed by Pine
Security Digest.
Aeon tracked where the password-carrying e-mail messages were
sent to - a free web-based account. In the messages already
there, they found details of e-mail accounts from Microsoft, the
US Army and a video games company
Simtel no longer makes ProMail available. It has also given what
information it has about the supplier of ProMail to the FBI, US
Army Counterintelligence and Interpol.

then how do you explain the following?:

"Moscow Builds Bunkers Against Nuclear Attack"
By Bill Gertz
April 1st, 1997
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Russia is continuing a Cold War-era program to build deep
underground bunkers, subways and command posts to help Moscow's
leaders flee the capital and survive a nuclear attack, The Washington
Times has learned.
Among the ambitious projects: a secret subway being built directly
to the residence of Russian President Boris Yeltsin outside Moscow.
"The underground construction appears larger than previously
assessed," a CIA report labeled "top secret" reported two weeks ago.
"Three decrees last year on an emergency planning authority under
Yeltsin with oversight of underground facility construction suggest
that the purpose of the Moscow-area projects is to maintain continuity
of leadership during nuclear war."
A copy of the report was obtained by The Washington Times from
defense sources. A CIA spokesman declined to comment.
Disclosure of the secret multibillion-dollar construction program
comes less than two weeks after President Clinton and Mr. Yeltsin
agreed in Helsinki to extend the deadline for nuclear arms cuts under
the START II treaty because of Russian concerns over "dismantlement
costs."
U.S. officials said the Russian spending on strategic defenses,
coupled with ongoing procurement of new strategic missiles and
submarines, raises questions about Moscow's claims not to have funds
needed to carry out START II reductions.
The outlays also raise new worries among some U.S. officials about
whether U.S. aid to Russia is allowing Moscow to spend its money on
building new strategic forces and facilities.
"How can the United States be so gullible to accept Russian claims
that it doesn't have the money to comply with START II when it's made
the decision to modernize its forces and build these underground
facilities?" asked one U.S. government defense official.
According to the CIA report, construction work is continuing on a
"nuclear-survivable, strategic command post at Kosvinsky Mountain,"
located deep in the Ural Mountains about 850 miles west of Moscow.
Satellite photographs of Yamantau Mountain, also located about
850 miles west of Moscow in the Urals near the town of Beloretsk,
show continued digging at the "deep underground complex" and
new construction at each of the site's above-ground support areas,
the CIA stated. Yamantau Mountain means "Evil Mountain" in the local
Bashkir langauge.
"The command post at Kosvinsky appears to provide the Russians
with the means to retaliate against a nuclear attack," the CIA report
said. "The rationale for the Yamantau complex is unclear."
According to the CIA report, the Russians are building or
renovating four complexes within Moscow that would be used to house
senior Russian government leaders during a nuclear strike.
A map published in the report showed new subway construction under
way from Victory Park Station in Moscow to Mr. Yeltsin's dacha, some
13 miles west of the Kremlin and about four miles from the Moscow Ring
Road.
Additionally, the CIA report stated that a bunker for Russian
leaders at Voronovo, about 46 miles south of Moscow, is nearly
complete. A second bunker located at Sharapovo, some 34 miles from
Moscow, has a special underground subway running directly to it.
The subway system for Russian leaders allows for "rapid evacuation
of leaders during wartime from Moscow," the CIA said. Presumably, the
leadership would then be flown to the Yamantau or Kosvinsky complexes.
According to the report, Mr. Yeltsin and Prime Minister
Viktor Chernomyrdin endorsed the construction of the bunkers,
subways and command posts, and funding for the Yamantau facility was
listed for the first time this year in the Russian federal budget.
Peter Pry, a former CIA analyst and author of a new book on
Russian nuclear operations, said the continued construction of the
Russian strategic defense sites is ominous and cannot be dismissed by
U.S. officials as "inertia" from Cold War-era strategic policies.
"It shows they take the threat of nuclear war so seriously that
they're willing to spend scarce resources on it," Mr. Pry said,
adding that he was not familiar with the CIA report. "These things are
tying down billions of dollars in rubles that could go into other
enterprises the Russians need -- for example, providing housing for
Russian military officers."
Mr. Pry said Russian press reports say the underground facility
at Yamantau Mountain covers an area as large as the Capital Beltway.
The Clinton administration has been providing hundreds of millions
of dollars in U.S. aid to Russia to help Moscow dismantle its
nuclear arsenal.
Despite the aid, the CIA report shows that the Russians are
building both defensive and offensive strategic facilities and
weapons, including a new type of long-range strategic missile and a
new strategic missile submarine.
Russian Defense Minister Igor Rodionov said in February that both
the reliability and control of Russian nuclear weapons were in
question because of the deterioration of the armed forces, but
Pentagon officials have dismissed the statements as posturing by Mr.
Rodionov in a bid to boost his budget.
Mr. Pry said the Russian construction program also shows that
Russian leaders do not see a diminished threat of nuclear conflict.
"This is a manifestation of the Russians' continued war-fighting
attitudes," Mr. Pry said. "They believe in the idea that you can
survive and prevail in a nuclear conflict. These kinds of facilities
are designed to survive for weeks and months."
By contrast, U.S. nuclear protective facilities have been largely
shut down. The complex underneath the Greenbriar resort in Virginia
was abandoned, along with another facility in Virginia known as Mount
Weather, U.S. officials have said.
The main nuclear command facility now in existence is located
inside Cheyenne Mountain, Colo., but it was only designed to withstand
small nuclear blasts and would easily be knocked out in a large
Russian missile attack.
By contrast, there are no nuclear weapons currently in the U.S.
arsenal capable of damaging the new Russian strategic defense
facilities.

"Defector Warns of Russian Plans"
By Barry Schweid
AP Diplomatic Writer
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Russian defector says military intelligence there
is gathering information on President Clinton, congressional leaders,
members of the Cabinet and key military leaders for assassination
squads.
Elite troops already are training in the United States and in the
event of war ``would try to assassinate as many American leaders as
possible, as well as their families,'' Stanislav Lunev, a former
colonel in the Russian military intelligence service, asserts in a
book published Wednesday.
They would also blow up power stations, telephone switching systems
and dams and target secret landing sites for Air Force One, wrote
Lunev, who defected in 1992.
``The use of tactical nuclear weapons would be likely,'' he said.
Declaring he wanted to use his experience ``to warn America of the
dirty tricks that can be played against her,'' the defector says
Russian pilots are training for action against the United States and
NATO.
In the book, ``Through the Eyes of the Enemy,'' and in an Associated
Press interview, Lunev said special agents were entering the United
States as foreign tourists on fake passports and that elite troops
were locating drop sites for small nuclear devices, known as
``suitcase bombs,'' in the Shenandoah Valley outside Washington and
the Hudson Valley of New York.
``Russia remains terrified of the power of America, and Russian
military intelligence does everything it can to prepare for a war that
it considers inevitable,'' Lunev wrote.
CIA and FBI officials declined to discuss the former colonel or his
assertions. On one of his central points, that Russian mobsters have
considerable control over the Russian government, including espionage
operations, CIA spokesperson Anya Guilsher said:
``The Russian intelligence security services have expressed public
concern regarding Russian organized criminal ties to government
officials. There is a determined effort under way to prosecute
officials for criminal activity.''
Guilsher also said ``the Russian mafia is something we continue to
watch carefully.''
In the book, Lunev wrote that ``America is facing a nation led by
gangsters -- gangsters who have nuclear weapons. And some of these
weapons are on American soil.''
In a telephone interview, Lunev said the Russian government cannot
account for about 100 nuclear devices, and ``it's possible'' nuclear
weapons already have been dropped in the Shenandoah and Hudson valleys
or elsewhere in the United States.
On the influence of Russian mobsters, he spoke without qualification.
``The mafia controls the government and the political establishment,
and as a result of this they have a huge influence over (President
Boris) Yeltsin.''
Lunev shied away from registering an opinion of Clinton's decision to
go to Moscow in September for talks with Yeltsin. ``It's not my
business,'' he said.
However, Lunev said it was more important to talk to the Russian
president about the proliferation of missile technology than to defer
a summit until the Russian parliament approves the START II missile
reduction treaty.
Asked what his intentions were, Lunev said: ``I wish America to take
much more care about this country's national security because the Cold
War is not finished.''
Lunev went on: ``There is no military confrontation between the two
blocs, but the Cold War is still in play and going on in much more
dangerous ways. There is no open confrontation, but a lot of activity
from special services and criminals.''
Insisting that Russia was preparing for war with the United States,
the former intelligence officer said, ``Russian pilots are training
for action against NATO and the U.S. military. Russia still consider
the United States and NATO the main potential military adversaries.''
Asked how U.S. officials responded to his allegations, Lunev replied:
``They are very interested, but they are professional and they cannot
provide emotions.''

INVOLVEMENT WITH SERBIA WILL TRIGGER WORLD WAR THREE
By J. Adams
February, 1994
"If we presume the coming transformation of the Communist
Party into the Russian Orthodox Party of the Soviet Union, we
would obtain truly the ideal state, one which would fulfill
the historical destiny of the Russian people. It is a question
of the Orthodoxization of the entire world."
(Gennadii Shimanov)
"The messianic significance of Russia in relation to the West
is beyond doubt. Slavophilism alone can still save the West from
parliamentarism, unbelief, and dynamite."
(Aleksei Kireev)
(Quotes taken from opening page of Alexander Yanov's
'The Russian Challenge and the Year 2000'.)
As the West prepares to take military action against the Serbs,
the world holds its breath wondering what will happen next. For anyone
who knows the truth, however, the future is clear. Western military
intervention in the Balkans is being intentionally provoked by the
Russian-backed Serbs in order to trigger world war three.
The general strategy is to provoke the West into taking military
action against Russia's slavic brethren in order to create a pretext
for a Zhirinovsky coup and massive Russian military aggression against
the West.
Notably, Zhirinovsky visited Serbia the week prior to the current
crisis and declared that he would consider any action by NATO against
Serbia an act of war against Russia. More specifically, Zhirinovsky
proclaimed: "if a single bomb falls on Serbia we will consider that an
attack on Russia". Last year I wrote an editorial, entitled "A Time
For War" , in which I warned that Russia is setting a trap so that,
when Western military action is taken against the Serbs, "a militant
neofacist dictator can be brought to power in Russia....That dictator-
and I'll even tell you his name: Vladimir Zhirinovsky- can then be
used to launch a third world war against Israel, America, and the
Western allies...". Unfortunately, everyone appears to be ignoring
the meaning of my editorials as well as the implications of "The
Zhirinovsky Connection". See:
http://www.ucc.uconn.edu/~jpa94001/j05.html
http://www.ucc.uconn.edu/~jpa94001/j28.html
The reason I was able to anticipate the crisis the world is
currently being drawn into a year ago is because I believe the world
has been totally deceived. As I see it, ever since Mikhail Gorbachev
came to power in the mid-1980's and introduced his "New Thinking",
Russia has been living by its old thinking in a new and far more
dangerous form. One way to explain the unbelievable reversal in
Russia's behavior over the past decade most likely stems from the
"Russian Idea". In his books, 'The Russian New Right' (1978), and 'The
Russian Challenge and the Year 2000' (1987), Sovietologist Alexander
Yanov describes an ideological transformation that was taking place at
the top of the Soviet power structure during the 1970's and early
1980's. This transformation stemmed from Russia's historical
messianic complex. According to the "New Right", Russia's mission is
to save the world from the evils of liberalism and democracy by waging
an apocalyptic war against the West so that a global orthodox
dictatorship can be established. Before doing this, however,
communism needed to be overthrown and the Soviet empire disbanded so
that Russia could get back to its "spiritual roots".
As I see it, when Gorbachev rose to power in 1985, the program of
the Russian Right (Slavophiles), not the Left (Westernizers), began to
be implemented. Gorbachev's "New Thinking", based upon the Russian
Idea, was a long-term plan to bring about exactly what we see today:
communism is overthrown, the Soviet empire disbanded, and, now that
the West is most vulnerable, Russia is about to have Zhirinovsky
launch world war three. After the dust settles and the West is
defeated, Gorbachev will undoubtedly reemerge to power and claim he is
saving the world from self- destruction. A global orthodox
dictatorship will then be formed by a man who is a liar and murderer
from the beginning.
The crucial point here is that what we are witnessing is a total
lie. Gorbachev extended Lenin's strategy to defeat the West from
"tell them what they want to hear" to "show them what they want to
see". History has been shaped over the past decade to fit what
Westerners *want* to believe: instead of of communism and
dictatorship, there's been freedom and democracy; instead of an arms
race and Cold War, there's been arms reductions and world peace.
Unfortunately, it has all been literally too good to be true. As
KGB defector Anatoliy Golitsyn correctly anticipated, we have simply
been told 'New Lies for Old' (1984), while "the fundamental nature
and the objectives of the reformed adversary, i.e., the Soviet Union,
have not changed (quote from a letter written to 20/20 in 1992)".
Because the world has foolishly accepted the lies of "The Old Enemy",
it is about to receive the opposite of what is expected: a third
world war and global dictatorship.
As it stands the West is being provoked into throwing the first
punches of world war three. While Zhirinovsky's rise to power and the
outbreak of global war will appear to stem from, at the least, Western
military action against Russia's historical Serbian ally, let it be
clear that this is deceptive. Countries like Serbia are Russian
puppet states, and Zhirinovsky is KGB. Regardless of what people may
*want* to believe, the West is being framed for triggering world war
three, and Zhirinovsky is the scapegoat for what is truly
*Gorbachev's* ultimate crime against humanity.
"History is a capricious character.
It depends on who writes it."
- Mikhail Gorbachev

*** A TIME FOR WAR?: The Unpopular Truth... ***
J. Adams
The Spirit Of Truth Page
http://www.ucc.uconn.edu/~jpa94001/
During the past seven years I have been struggling to get out "The
Truth" as opposed to antichristian lies that dominate the world today.
Unfortunately, I have been basically alone in this effort. Thus,
"The Lie" has prevailed and now it looks as if the consequences are
about to be realized in the form of a third world war and the
establishment of a global dictatorship of man that will falsely
claim to be a "kingdom of god".
At the current time it looks as if the United States is being
provoked into taking military action against Russia's historical
allies: Serbia and Iraq. This is a trap that has been set to create a
pretext for a military coup in Moscow and the rise of a nationlist
Russian dictator, possibly Vladimir Zhirinovsky. This dictator, in
turn, will wage an all-out, apocalyptic war against the West now that
the Western powers are least prepared and Russia is no longer deemed
an enemy of world freedom.
The reality, however, is that Russia is an ultimate enemy to world
freedom right now and Vladimir Zhirinovsky, or whatever dictator is
brought to power, is working on behalf of Mikhail Gorbachev and the
military/KGB establishment of the "former" Soviet Union (the prophetic
"Beast"). The West has been intentionally misled into an ultimate
false sense of security. This Russian strategic deception is serving
two main purposes. First off, it has misled the West into dropping
its guard so that the East can attack most surprisingly and
effectively. Secondly, since the West is no longer militarily
intimidated by Russia, the Western powers, and America in
particularly, can be lured into throwing the first punches of world
war three. In this way, blame can be projected on to the West for
unleashing the global holocaust of mass destruction a third world war
entails. Thus, after the dust settles, Russia can replace any sort of
evil military dictatorship that fought world war three with a
seemingly benevolent government led by Mikhail Gorbachev. Since the
Western powers will be destroyed and considered responsible for
triggering global war, Russia can establish a globally-dominant and
popularly-supported regime, i.e., a global dictatorship.
In relation to the developing situation, below are some articles I
have written over the years pertaining to the coming war. The first
two editorials, entitled "A Time For War" anf "The Price of False
Peace", were written in February and March of 1993, respectively, for
my college newspaper, but the editor refused to publish it. The third
article was published in the paper after a good deal of argument.
When printed, it was entitled: "Involvement With Serbia Will
Trigger World War Three"- a title that might prove very prescient.
Following the three editorials, only one of which was ever
printed by a newspaper, there are some quotes presented to
reveal what Mikhail Gorbachev is really all about. Finally, some
news articles are included that support the general idea that
Russia is duping the West and preparing to fight and win a nuclear
third world war.

***A TIME FOR WAR***
By J. Adams
February, 1993
Soon after he came to power in the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev
released a book entitled 'A Time For Peace'. With the emergence of
Gorbachev and his supposedly peace-oriented ways, the West took great
comfort that finally the militant East would no longer pose a threat
and the Cold War could be brought to an end. Indeed, everything,
right up to the breakup of Russia's so-called 'communist' empire, has
taken place to lead us to believe 'it is peace for our time'. But
really, is it a 'New World Order' and global peace which is at hand,
or a new world disorder and global war.
Increasingly popular opinion is calling for no appeasement in
Yugoslavia. More and more Americans are urging Western military
intervention in Yugoslavia to bring stability to the region. However,
let it be clear that the West should have refrained from appeasement
long ago, but not with Serbia- with Russia.
There is reason to believe that what the West is walking into
right now is a trap set by Moscow in which Yugoslavia and Iraq are the
bait.
The explosive ethnic conflict taking place today in what was once
Yugoslavia is a product of blatant Serbian aggression. It turns out,
however, that Serbia is being sponsored by its historical slavic ally:
Russia. More specifically, even though there is a tight arms embargo
on Yugoslavia, the Russians are continuing to underhandedly supply the
Serbs with the weapons being used to overrun Bosnia. That Russia is
doing this completely goes against Moscow's supposed devotion to
resolving the crisis and preserving the New World Order of
international cooperation, peace, and security. Furthermore, it
raises serious questions about just what is going on in the Balkans.
Russia's suspect activity with regard to Yugoslavia, however,
shadows in comparison to its policy towards Iraq.
For those who have not been watching (e.g., the Western media),
Russia sent a senior diplomat to Baghdad for three days during the
second week of February whose stated purpose was to "consolidate
friendly ties with Iraq". This visit has significant implications.
First off, it establishes growing open Russian support for
Saddam Hussein. Secondly, just as with arming Serbia, building ties
with Iraq is profoundly inconsistent with Moscow's supposed
devotion to international peace and security.
Russia's handshake with Saddam in February should come as no
surprise to those who have kept a critical eye on Moscow and Baghdad
since the Gulf Crisis broke out in the summer of 1990. There has been
strong indications that Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and the subsequent
Gulf War were part of a large-scale deception being engineered by
Russia. Iraq and Russia had been close allies for some thirty years
going into the invasion, and it thus makes sense that Moscow has been
behind Saddam Hussein's seemingly irrational actions from day one.
The strong alliance that developed between Moscow and Baghdad
during the 1970's and 1980's can be directly attributed to the
personal efforts of Saddam Hussein. Saddam played a principal role in
forging an Iraqi 'Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation' with Russia in
1972, and when Saddam took over power in 1979, he signed an agreement
on military cooperation and strategic consultation with then Soviet
Defense Minister Ustinov. During the 1980's the Soviets helped Saddam
consolidate his power and built Iraq into a regional military
superpower. Given the deep and dependent relationship he formed with
Moscow, it is clear Saddam would have never pulled-off a stunt as
reckless as invading Kuwait and challenging the West without the
Kremlin's approval.
The reality, however, is that Saddam's invasion of Kuwait was not
only approved by Russia, it was planned and carried out under the
orders and supervision of Moscow. During the six months prior to the
invasion, Soviet arms deliveries to Iraq accelerated to twice the rate
of the 1980's when Iraq was in an all-out war with Iran. Two weeks
before the invasion, the Soviets launched a military reconnaisance
satellite over the Gulf and sent one of their top generals to Iraq
along with a small expert staff. This general and his delegation,
along with the 8,000 Soviet personnel that were already in Iraq,
provided direct 'Quality Edge' military assistance to the Iraqi
invasion of Kuwait. Soviet assistance in planning and executing the
invasion was made clear by the surprising similarity of the operation
to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.
In the aftermath of the invasion, Moscow did everything it took to
open the way for a Western-led attack against Saddam Hussein's forces
but continued to underhandedly support its Iraqi ally. Even though it
clearly went against Soviet strategic interests, Moscow, for the first
time in post-war history, cooperated with the West in the United
Nations so that a U.S.-led military coalition could launch a war to
free Kuwait from Iraqi occupation. Meanwhile, the Soviets continued to
send arms to Iraq in violation of an international embargo, they fed
Iraq intelligence on Western forces building up in the Gulf, and
Soviet personnel helped the Iraqis jam eavesdropping by Western
aircraft.
With the Gulf War, Moscow continued to work behind the scenes with
Iraq. The Soviets continued to underhandedly ship arms to Iraq and,
as the National Defense Council Foundation later reported, Soviet
personnel were "all over the place" on the battlefield. Russian
language military communiques were persistently heard on Iraqi radio
networks; Soviet technicians "continued to tune radars, fix tanks and
planes and advise (Iraqi) combat units down to the battalion level";
and the Soviets supplied targeting information to Iraq and had their
personnel "help the Iraqis fire SCUD missiles at Israel and Saudi
Arabia".
The reason that Moscow has been deceptively making peace with one
hand and war with the other in the Persian Gulf and the Balkans should
be clear. Throughout Russian history, strategic deception and
military aggression has been the central way by which the Kremlin has
expanded its control. This approach served Russia well in dominating
virtually the entire East of this world, and so it should come as no
surprise that such a strategy is now being used to conquer the world.
If the West intervenes in Yugoslavia and renews hostilities
against Iraq, you can bet that Russia will suddenly do a total about-
face. As Western military action is taken, a militant neofascist
dictator can be brought to power in Russia by throwing some sort of
bogus coup like in August 1991. This dictator- and I'll even tell you
his name: Vladimir Zhirinovsky- can then be used to launch a third
world war against Israel, America, and the Western allies, just as had
been planned from the beginning by Gorbachev. Because it will appear
to stem from Western military intervention in Yugoslavia and Iraq, the
supposed power shift in Russia and seemingly consequent world war will
be blamed on the 'imperialist' actions of the West rather than the
premeditated efforts of the guilty East. After the dust settles,
Gorbachev can reemerge to power claiming that 'he' has come to save
the world from self-destruction. Russian orthodoxy can be established
in the place of communism and a global dictatorship of man-
Gorbachev's false 'kingdom of god'- will be achieved.
It seems as with Europe during the late-1930's, the world today
has been easily deceived. Just as Hitler made peace before war in
accordance with his 'Big Lie' dictum, Russia has befriended America
and its allies over the last several years in accordance with
deceptive long-run strategic planning. Like with Neville Chamberlain,
we should have never appeased our enemy's lies by signing 'paper'
treaties and overlooking the gross inconsistencies in the words and
actions of our foe which have invariably pointed toward an underlying
intention to make war rather than peace. If you want to be set free,
no longer falsely believe it is 'peace for our time' as Chamberlain
foolishly proclaimed in 1938. Find the courage to accept the truth. It
is a time for war...

***THE PRICE OF FALSE PEACE***
By J. Adams
March, 1993
Peace in today's world is well represented by the modern peace
symbol: a satanic symbol in which the Christian Cross is inverted and
broken. This signifies how peace in the modern age is false- an
antichristian lie.
In the context of the current political crisis in Russia, many
people believe that we should stand behind Boris Yeltsin at all costs.
This, they would say, is the price of peace. In the eyes of
most Americans, Yeltsin is a hero of Russian democracy who the U.S.
and its allies must stand by lest the communist 'hardliners' return
to power and renew the expensive Cold War. This point-of-view,
however, is symptomatic of a popular delusion afflicting the world
with regard to the true pursuits of Russia and its leaders. Until the
truth of this situation is accepted, humanity will remain enslaved by
lies.
Democracy in Russia has never existed. For those who have bought
the idea that Boris Yeltsin is the first democratically elected leader
of Russia in the country's 1000-year history, you better think again.
The Russian presidential election in June of 1991- a point at which
Soviet communism was still visibly intact- was fraudulent. If you find
this difficult to believe, I strongly suggest you examine the
political life of Vladimir Zhirinovsky- possibly the upcoming
neofascist dictator of Russia.
Vladimir Zhirinovsky is an important but weak link in a strategic
deception Russia has been feeding the West since Gorbachev's 'New
Thinking' was introduced in the mid-1980's. He supposedly received
nearly seven million votes and came in third out of a field of seven
candidates in the Russian presidential election. Given the neofascist
platform of his misleadingly called 'Liberal Democratic Party',
Zhirinovsky's success in the election came as a complete surprise.
What came as an even greater surprise, however, were results from
investigations of Zhirinovsky's political registration and the August
coup in 1991. In December of 1991, investigators revealed that, "...to
all intents and purposes, the Liberal Democratic Party, headed by
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, does not exist". Of course, if Zhirinovsky had
no party and, in turn, no base of support, how is it that he received
millions of votes and came in a surprising third in the race for the
Russian presidency? Clearly the election results were impossible. The
implication should be obvious: the supposedly democratic election for
the first Russian president, won by Boris Yeltsin, was a fraud.
Just two months after Yeltsin became president of Russia, he
apparently saved his country and democratic reforms from a coup
attempt by communist hardliners. Unfortunately, like the Russian
presidential election, the August coup of 1991 was also fraudulent- a
Potemkin masquerade intended for Western audiences.
During the first half of 1991, the Soviets carefully set the stage
for the bogus August putsch. Six months prior to the actual coup, the
KGB and Soviet army rehearsed their upcoming act under the guise of a
countercoup. During the summer of 1991, numerous rumors and warnings
were circulated in the West that a coup was imminent, and in June
hardliners reportedly failed at a constitutional-coup attempt. As
tension grew, Gorbachev strangely ignored all the warning signs of an
approaching putsch by hardliners and refused to take precautionary
measures. Then, on the weekend just before the controversial signing
of a new union treaty that would undermine the Kremlin's central
authority, Gorbachev made the seemingly reckless decision to go on
vacation to his dacha in the Crimea. Low and behold, on Monday- the
weekday Lenin stressed never to throw a coup-hardline communist
conspirators acted (literally).
From beginning to end, the August putsch was a nonsensical tale.
The KGB, Soviet military, and hardline conspirators behind the coup
attempt failed to follow almost every rule of Soviet-designed coups.
To begin with, reliable troops weren't prepositioned at key
facilities, and communication and transportation links with the
outside world were left unsevered. Even worse, the organizers of the
coup failed to have the main opposition leader, Boris Yeltsin,
detained or isolated- an unbelievable oversight. As Yeltsin took
refuge at the parliamentary 'White House' and began rallying
opposition, no one cut the phonelines. Furthermore, the media, which
the putchists had taken control of, was somehow allowed to broadcast
Yeltsin's appeals for resistance and international support. Amazingly,
throughout the whole affair Gorbachev's remaining allies and the
Russian KGB that backed Yeltsin were organizing opposition from
Kremlin offices literally down the hall from where the coup plotters
and the Soviet KGB were headquartered.
The reason that political events in Russia during the summer of
1991 were so utterly nonsensical is because they were just that:
nonsense. Both the Russian presidential election and the August coup
were staged as part of a large-scale political deception designed to
serve the power-maximizing interests of Russia's ruling elite.
Yeltsin's democratic victory that summer at the Russian White House
under the red-white-and-blue Russian flag was a lie that the West was
easily seduced by. However, a democratic transformation of Russia
remains about as likely as a communist revolution in America.
Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and all the supposed reformers in Moscow to this
day are 'ex-communists' and 'hardliners' who pursue but one thing:
authoritarian power.
Today the underlying goal of Gorbachev's New Thinking is about to
be realized. The stage is being set for a neofascist dictator to take
power in today's 'Weimar Russia'. That dictator, possibly Vladimir
Zhirinovsky, is already revealing the true pursuit of Russia: to wage
an all-out third world war against Israel, America, and the Western
allies. Unfortunately, because the West has accepted the false peace
and friendship Russia and her Arab allies have offered over the past
several years, the East will militarily prevail. Not only have we been
duped into dropping our guard, our enemy has effectively disappeared.
Should 'democratic' Russia launch a surprise nuclear blow in the midst
of seeming internal chaos and a violent international crisis, we will
be greatly hesitant about retaliating during the crucial minutes
before being destroyed. And even if we do decide to strike back, we
will only target well-defended Mother Russia; the rest of the
communist world has been secured through disintegration.
After the dust settles, Gorbachev will undoubtedly 'return' to
power in Moscow. Instead of realizing how he destroyed the world,
people will falsely believe that he has 'saved' the world from
militant extremists. Russian orthodoxy can be established in the place
of communism, and a global dictatorship of man, Gorbachev's false
'kingdom of god', will be achieved.

A provocative example that the Russian Right is behind the
transformation taking place in Russia is the following articles:
Medvedev, A. "Orthodox Church instead of the communist party". 'Moscow
News': 1/24/94; p6.
"Moscow Churches will be restored". 'Moscow News': 1/24/94; p14.

-NOTE-
One of the most suspicious features of the move to restore the
Russian Orthodox Church in recent years is the
renovation and rebuilding of churches. Even though the
Russian government is supposedly broke (recently it was
reported that electricity had been shut-off to the command &
control center of Russia's strategic nuclear weapons because the
military has failed to pay its utility bills), it has been able
to come up with money for a massive campaign to restore and
rebuild Russian Orthodox Churches. In the Moscow area alone the
number of churches has surged from 130 to 600. Clearly this
indicates that the transformation to an Orthodox state is well
underway.

SOME INTRIGUING QUOTES FROM MIKHAIL GORBACHEV:
"We have no right ever to forget that psychological
warfare is a struggle for winning people's minds."
- Mikhail Gorbachev
(Taken from "Soviet disinformation chief:
A master at using words as Cold War weapons".
New York Tribune, 7/27/87)
"Comrades, do not be concerned about all you hear about glasnost
and perestroika and democracy in the coming years. These are
primarily for outward consumption. There will be no significant
internal change within the Soviet Union other than for cosmetic
purposes. Our purpose is to disarm the Americans and let them
fall asleep. We want to accomplish three things: One we want the
Americans to withdraw conventional forces from Europe. Two, we
want them to withdraw nuclear forces from Europe. Three we want
the Americans to stop proceeding with Strategic Defense
Initiative."
- Mikhail Gorbachev Nov. 1987 address to the Soviet Politburo
On Friday, October 25, 1996 ABC television commentator
Charles Gibson asked Mikhail Gorbachev the following
question during an interview:
"It is an interesting paradox to so many Americans-
you are so honored throughout the world for
fundamental changes, but, I don't have to recite the
election results to you, in the last election you got
a very small, tiny percent of the vote. Why is
Gorbachev seen so differently outside Russia and
inside Russia?"
This was Gorbachev's response:
"Well, let's recall another example. Jesus Christ was
pelted with stones. He was blamed and condemned, and
then he was put with a bandit and they were taken for
execution. And when it was said that one of them could
be spared, the people said the bandit should be spared
and Christ was crucified."
Here are some more recent quotes from Mr. Gorbachev:
"Communist ideology in its pure form is akin to
Christianity. Its main ideas are the brotherhood of all
peoples irrespective of their nationality, justice and
equality, peace, and an end to all hostility between
peoples."
(from Gorbachev's new book- 'Memoirs')
"The socialist tradition....goes back to Jesus Christ,
not (Karl) Marx."
(USA Today, October 28th, 1996)
"Jesus Christ, he was also a reformer. He was pelted
with stones and insulted."
(New York Times, October 25th, 1996)
The excerpt below is from Reuters World Service, December 8,
1996, Sunday, BC cycle:
HEADLINE: "Vital Gorbachev refuses to let go of politics"
(Gorbachev) is frank, though hardly contrite, about the
failures of judgement that led him to promote to senior
positions the very men who would plot to overthrow him in
1991.
"How do you explain Judas -- right there next to Jesus
Christ?" he asks. "How do you explain that? And Christ
did not recognise him for what he was. You could say
that's a metaphor."

The Yugoslavs did not fire any surface-to-air missiles.
One F-15 fighter jet returned to Aviano air base in Italy trailing smoke, but
U.S. Air Force officials said the damage was due to engine failure.
Albania, which offered "all facilities" to NATO troops, said Serb forces had
fired mortars across the border early Thursday morning, slightly damaging three

U.S. officials told NBC News that the first target hit was Kopanik, site of the
underground headquarters of the Yugoslav air defense network. In neighboring
Macedonia, meanwhile, NATO tanks moved to patrol the border with Kosovo after
the Western alliance airstrikes began. Several tanks and armored personnel
vehicles were seen moving near the country's border crossings and at hilltops

*** EU may back Palestinian statehood
BERLIN (AP) - European Union foreign ministers approved the text of
declaration Thursday that would signal the EU's strongest support to
date for the Palestinians' right to declare their own state, officials
said. Officials attending an EU summit said if EU leaders approved the
text, the declaration would be released at the end of the two-day EU
summit, expected to end early Friday. The text says the Palestinians
have an unqualified right to self-determination, including the option
of a state, and adds that the 15-nation Union looks forward to the
early fulfillment of that right. In anticipation of the EU move, the
office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement
denouncing any declaration that favors creation of a Palestinian
state. See

BERLIN (AP) - German politicians largely rallied behind their

several voiced misgivings about taking part in Germany's first attack
on a sovereign country since World War II. German sensitivity was
heightened by the fact the bombs and missiles hit a region where
memories of the wartime Nazi occupation remain alive. German Tornado
warplanes were in action Wednesday night in the allied campaign, but
the government refused to say whether they actually fired at Yugoslav
targets. Defense Minister Rudolf Scharping appealed to the nation to
support its troops. But the Greens, the junior partner in Chancellor
Gerhard Schroeder's center-left coalition, struggled with their

*** Strongest explosion ever observed
WASHINGTON (AP) - The most powerful explosion ever observed - a deep

of energy equal to billions of years of light from thousands of suns.
Researchers say in studies to be published Friday the explosion,
called a gamma ray burst, occurred 9 billion light-years from Earth.
What caused the explosion is still a mystery. "It is probably
something to do with massive stars," said S. George Djorgovski, a
California Institute of Technology astronomer. The gamma ray burst was
detected by Italian and U.S. science satellites that sent an alert to
a network of ground instruments and telescopes. Later, more powerful
telescopes photographed the explosion's afterglow. See

*** Russia freezes contacts with NATO
MOSCOW (AP) - Russia expelled NATO's representatives Friday and
promised humanitarian aid for Yugoslavia as Moscow sought to protest
NATO airstrikes on its ally without risking a direct clash with the
West. Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov called for a freeze in relations
with NATO and ordered the alliance's top diplomatic official in
Moscow, Alexis Chahtahtinsky of France, and its senior military
representative, Manfred Diehl of Germany, to leave Russia. Russia has
a partnership arrangement with NATO, but has denounced the bombing
campaign as well as NATO's expansion to include three former Soviet
satellites that joined the alliance earlier this month. See

*** EU endorses Palestinian state
BERLIN (AP) - The European Union Friday endorsed the creation of a
Palestinian state by next year, a decision angrily denounced by
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. EU leaders seemed to be
trying to compensate Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat for his apparent
willingness to postpone a unilateral declaration of statehood in the
West Bank and Gaza Strip beyond May 4, the end of the five-year period
of Palestinian autonomy. At the end of a summit in Berlin, EU leaders
issued a statement urging Israel to wrap up talks with the
Palestinians on their status within a year. See

*** Canada asking G-7 to forgive poor countries' debt
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Canada is asking the world's seven
most-developed countries to forgive an extra $8 billion owed by some
of the poorest countries. A plan for 100% debt forgiveness outlined
Thursday by Prime Minister Jean Chretien ties aid to guarantees those
countries wouldn't use the gift to increase military spending. The
World Bank and International Monetary Fund already have a program of
debt relief for 41 of the world's poorest countries but so far only
seven have qualified for help. If the program were fully implemented,
it could save the poor countries $9.7 billion. Chretien's proposal
would almost double that amount. Canada is willing to go it alone if
other G-7 members - the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany,
Japan and Italy - don't agree to the proposal at their next meeting in
Cologne, Germany. Canada's share of the first phase for the five
poorest countries - Madagascar, Tanzania, Honduras, Bangladesh and
possibly Zambia - would be $50 million, Finance Department officials
said. ###
*** Authors defend evolution teaching
BOSTON (AP) - Fearing a growing assault on the teaching of Darwin's
theories, a group of textbook authors has launched a campaign in
defense of evolution education. A joint statement, to be released
Friday at the National Science Teachers Association, a convention of
20,000 science teachers, comes as some public school districts
consider softening their evolution curricula. "As scientists and
teachers, we find it unacceptable that school districts considering
our books for adoption would be encouraged to choose one book over
another based on the perception that teachers should avoid the topic
of evolution," the statement by 23 authors reads. See

And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of
the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten
crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast
which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the
feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the
dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And
I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his
deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the
beast.--Revelation 13:1-3

One [way to consolidate international economy policies] would be to
bring within the purview of the IMF [International Monetary Fund]
membership as a whole issues of interest that are currently discussed
within narrower forums, such as the Group of Five (France, Germany,
Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, which began meeting
in 1973 to discuss issues of common interest), the Group of Seven
(composed of the Group of Five plus Canada and Italy), and the Group
of Ten (consisting of the Group of Seven plus Belgium, the
Netherlands, and Sweden). The procedures need not preclude these
forums, but linking them to the IMF would strengthen the legitimacy of
the surveillance process and of the institution itself. Another
important advantage is that procedures involving the full membership
strengthen the rule of law and promote observance of the code of
conduct. This is because surveillance exercised within limited groups
of large countries represents only an extension of the principle of
hegemony of a single country passed on to the group. Broadening
participation to the whole membership places the rule of law in the
role of the hegemon, thus strengthening the legitimacy and the
stability of the established order.

--------------------
Group of Five - Similar to the Group of Seven (G-7), with the
exception of Canada and Italy.
Group of Seven - This term refers to seven major economic powers
(Canada. France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, and the United
States) whose finance ministers seek to promote balanced economic
growth and stability among exchange rates.
Group of Seventy-Seven - A grouping of developing countries which
received its name in connection with 77 countries issuing a joint
statement in Geneva, Switzerland in 1964. The G-77's primary focus is
serving as a caucus for articulating members' collective interests
primarily in areas of promoting economic cooperation among developing
countries and in negotiations on economic matters with developing
countries. G-77 membership has increased since 1964 to over 125
countries.
Group of Ten - Under the International Monetary Fund's General
Agreements to Borrow (GAB), established in 1962, 10 of the wealthiest
industrial members of the IMF "stand ready to lend their currencies to
the IMF up to specified amounts when supplementary resources are
needed." The finance ministers of these countries comprise the Group
of 10 (also called the Paris Club). Members include: Belgium, Canada,
France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the
United Kingdom, and the United States. Though numbering 11 with the
addition of Switzerland in 1984, the numerical name persists.
Group of Twenty-four - A grouping of finance ministers from 24
developing country members of the International Monetary Fund. The
Group, representing eight countries from each of the African, Asian,
and Latin American country groupings in the Group of 77, was formed in
January 1972 to counterbalance the influence of the Group of 10.

UN Watch (excerpts)
*History records for us a number of instances when the world was ruled
by large empires. The Tower of Babel was an attempt at political
unification, no mention is made of economic union. The empires of
Babylon, Assyria, Greece, and Rome were world empires both politically
and economically. Napoleon in the last century sought to unite Europe
with one monetary and political system. Until this century, there had
not been an attempt to integrate all the countries of the world
economically. This changed with the passage of the Federal Reserve Act
in 1913. As a result of that legislation, the finances and the
economic future of the United States was shifted from the authority of
the Congress and the U.S. Treasury to a private corporation called the
Federal Reserve. America was the last major country to change over to
a central bank system which would help facilitate the quest for a new
world economic order.
*A new world economic order has been evolving since 1930. First came
the control of a country's finances through central banking, then the
establishment of the BIS, then the creation of the World Bank, the
International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, the Group of Seven
(or Eight), and the World Trade Organization.
*The additional infrastructure added in July, 1944 was the World Bank
and International Monetary Fund which came into being at the Bretton
Woods Monetary Conference in New Hampshire. These institutions were
the vision of both socialist John Maynard Keynes from Britain and
Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Harry Dexter White (who was later
convicted as a Soviet spy). Although these institutions would
initially provide the funds to rebuild war- worn Europe, they have
evolved into very powerful organizations in the last fifty-some years
with greater and greater power. Currently there are plans to provide
the IMF with additional powers to make it "a world central bank." The
World Bank, which besides lending money for development projects,
establishes stock exchanges in third world countries, brings stock to
market on the international markets and is the largest syndicator of
international bonds in the world. The Bank also work very closely with
Prince Charles and to establish and facilitate the radical
environmental mandates of the United Nations in all parts of the
world.
*In 1975 the Group of Five was formed. The Group of Five came into
being after the world's currency markets were forced to close twice in
1973. Today it is known as the Group of Seven (Eight) and is comprised
of the top industrialized countries of the world: the United States,
Canada, Germany, Japan, Italy, France, and Great Britain. Russia
became a full partner in June, 1998. The Group of Seven (less Russia)
is considered a "global board of directors." As a result of their
economic power, they basically set the agenda which the rest of the
countries in the United Nations follow.
*In September, 1996, the Board of Directors, compromised of the Group
of Ten, admitted nine new members from the central banks of: Brazil,
China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Mexico, the Russian Federation, Saudia
Arabia and Singapore. In 1997, four additional central banks were
invited to buy into the BIS: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia,
Macedonia and Slovenia. Today a total of 120 central banks and
international financial institutions use the BIS as a bank with 45
central banks having the rights of representation and voting at the
General Meetings. In essence, they are a "United Nations of central
banks." [BIS--Bank for International Settlements]
*The BIS established the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision in
1975. It consists of senior representatives of bank supervisory
authorities from Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan,
Luxembourg, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the U.S. As
a result of the Herstatt Bank collapse in 1974, the BIS approved the
Basle Concordat. For some reason the contents of this document were
kept secret until March, 1981. The Concordat layed out
responsibilities for international banks, a new first for the world.
With this Concordat, a supranational bank (the BIS) was issuing orders
for the rest of the national banks of the world.

Who are the Group of Seven?
For most people, the phrase "Group of Seven" has no meaning because of
the lack of understanding as to the part they play in international
affairs. However, since 1975, the leaders of the most industrialized
worlds have met throughout the years to discuss global problems and
how the world should approach the 21st century. While the conventional
thinking of most Americans is that each country is responsible for
their own fate--economic, social, political and environmental- -
according to the Group of Seven, the "interdependence of our destinies
makes it necessary...to work toward mutually consistent economies
strategies through better cooperation..."
Who are the Group of Seven? How long have they met? What have they
done? Exactly who appointed them to build a "better international
system"? What authority do they have---or have they taken?

Measles, HIV, Ebola may all be related - study
WASHINGTON, March 26 (Reuters) - The viruses that cause measles, AIDS,
Ebola and influenza may all be distantly related, perhaps descended
from a common ancestor, researchers reported on Friday.
Scientists who have imaged the viruses say they all use a very similar
mechanism to enter the cells they infect.
``The structure of this molecule shows that a widely dissimilar virus,
a virus that everybody thought was very different from the other
group, ends up in fact having remarkable similarities,'' virologist
Robert Lamb, a member of the team at the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute at Northwestern University in Chicago that did the work,
said in a statement.
``It suggests a common ancestor among all these viruses, where one
would have thought them not to be related at all.''
Writing in the journal Molecular Cell, the researchers said they used
X-ray crystallography to look at the ``fusion protein'' of a
paramyxovirus. The paramyxoviruses cause diseases such as measles,
mumps, croup and viral pneumonia.
The fusion protein serves as a grappling hook that snags the infected
cell, pulling it together with the virus. The virus can then inject
its own genetic material into the cell, forcing it to pump out copy
after copy of the virus.
The researchers were surprised to find their fusion proteins so
closely resemble those of other viruses, such as HIV and Ebola.
Knowing just how this mechanism works can help scientists design
defences against it, crystallographer Theodore Jardetzky said.
``The fusion protein was of particular interest, because for HIV it's
been shown that if you can inhibit the fusion protein, you can block
viral entry,'' Jardetzky said.
An experimental new class of HIV drugs targets this protein.

New global finance forum to hold 1st meet April 14
.c Kyodo News Service
TOKYO, March 27 (Kyodo) -- A new global forum aimed at averting
another round of mayhem in financial markets will convene its first
meeting in Washington on April 14, Japanese government sources said
Saturday.
The session of the Financial Stability Forum will bring together
senior officials from the Group of Seven (G-7) industrial nations, as
well as from relevant international supervisory bodies, the sources
told Kyodo News.
The first meeting of the forum, whose creation was proposed by German
Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer and endorsed by top G-7 finance
officials last month, had earlier been planned for late April.
The forum is intended to exchange information and track potential
problems in the global economy so as to prevent a repeat of the
financial storms that swept Asia, Russia and Brazil in the past two
years.
It will also be open to countries outside the G-7 such as crisis-prone
emerging market economies in the future.
The forum will meet roughly twice a year. Andrew Crockett, general
manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), will serve as
its first chairman for a term of three years.
The international bodies that will take part in the forum will include
the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the BIS, the
International Organization of Securities Commissions, and the
International Association of Insurance Supervisors.
Tietmeyer was asked at the meeting in Washington on Oct. 3 of G-7
finance ministers and central bank governors to offer recommendations
on ways to strengthen financial-sector surveillance using regulatory
and supervisory expertise.
He reported at the G-7 gathering in Bonn on Feb. 20 his proposal that
a new global forum be established to tighten coordination among
authorities and organizations and keep a close eye on capital flows.

U.S. sailors kept a grim silence as they launched missiles toward
Yugoslavia. "A deathly silence" came over the men as they
realized they were in a combat situation, a Southern Baptist
chaplain said. "There will not be any cheering tonight," he told
chaplain director Bob Vickers.
...Chaplains prayed over the public address systems of ships
before the launch. "Lord, we come to you this evening wondering
what it may hold. We ask that you watch over us," a chaplain
said. Soldiers are more likely to talk about their faith and
spiritual needs during combat, Vickers told Baptist Press. "They
are wide open to that, probably more than at any other time."
..."Armed conflict is sometimes the price you pay for living in
at least the semblance of a moral universe," Richard Land,
director of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious
Liberty Commission (see link #1 below), said. Serb leader
Slobodan Milosevic is a war criminal, and powerful nations have a
moral responsibility to stop atrocities where they can, he said.
Christian "just war" theory can be applied to the situation, he
said.
...Christians should pray for the president and the troops and
seek to help refugees fleeing Kosovo, Franklin Graham said.
Samaritan's Purse (see link #2 below), his Boone,N.C.-based
relief and development agency, is trying to work with Belgrade,
Yugoslavia, churches to aid the hundreds of thousands of
displaced people. U.S. citizens should contribute to any of the
10 to 15 relief organizations at work in the country, he said.
..."The horror there is just unbelievable," Graham said on Larry
King Live. "This is wintertime -- and they're having to go through
the mountains and through the snow and with babies and children,
and -- it's just -- the suffering is unbelievable." Relief groups
need blankets, food, medicine, clothes, and other supplies to
help the multitude of refugees, he said.
...Contributions marked for Kosovo relief may be sent to the
Southern Baptist Convention's General Relief Fund, Office of
Finance, International Mission Board, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, VA
23230. For queries to Samaritan's Purse, the toll-free number is
1-800-665-2843.
...The Kosovar conflict is rooted in centuries of ethnic and
religious hatred, David Barrett of the Global Evangelization
Movement said. The Serbian Orthodox Church should not be blamed
for atrocities against Muslims, because leaders have called for
Christian solutions to the conflict, he said. Those who commit
atrocities reportedly are nominal believers.
...Christians around the world responded to the attack. Russian
Orthodox Church Patriarch Alexy II described the attacks as "a
sin before God" and a crime against international law. He called
for Serbs and Kosovars to recognize each others' concerns and
reach a peaceful agreement. "Resorting to the use of force always
signifies the failure of humanity," the Vatican's Joaquin
Navarro-Valls said.
...World Council of Churches President Konrad Raiser condemned
the attacks. Violence and intimidation in any form is
unacceptable, and "only a negotiated solution can bring a durable
and just peace," he told the three WCC churches in Yugoslavia.
"War can only bring further destruction and human suffering to a
region which has already experienced so much pain, and will open
new wounds and enmities."
An Austin, Texas, man may be connected to the disappearance and
possible death of atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair. David Waters,
O'Hair's former office manager, reportedly has been implicated by
two people in O'Hair's 1995 disappearance, the San Antonio
Express-News said. O'Hair and two others disappeared with several
hundred thousand dollars. O'Hair is known for bringing a lawsuit
that resulted in banning prayer from public schools.
...U.S. Attorney Gerald Carruth is trying to get Waters to
cooperate in the investigation, Waters' lawyer, Patrick Ganne,
said. "He said you can get the death penalty for solicitation to
commit murder. He said he'd better get right with God and tell
his side of the story."
...Waters stopped working for O'Hair in 1994. A year later, he
admitted stealing more than $50,000 from O'Hair's national
atheist organization. Waters reportedly has a criminal record,
including convictions for murder, battery, forgery, and theft. A
raid of his home turned up weapons and ammunition, a violation of
federal law for convicted felons, news reports said.

An Islamic holiday could bring more violence in Indonesia.
Chinese Christians on Ambon Island, and the Bataks of North
Sumatra fear a blood bath will occur March 28, Open Doors with
Brother Andrew said. Muslims believe that the patriarch Abraham
tried to sacrifice his son Ishmael on that day, but was stopped
by God. Muslims around the world will gather outdoors in fields
to pray and celebrate. There are many rumors that various radical
groups are planning to attack Christian churches during worship
services, Open Doors said. Indonesian Christians are asking
believers around the world to pray for their protection.
