Tampa church pleads guilty

Jun 1999 7:20:26 PDT
TAMPA, Fla., June 8 (UPI) -- Several pastors and members of a Tampa
church -- and the church itself -- have pleaded guilty to fraud and
theft charges.
But Deeper Life Christian Church Bishop Melvin Jefferson says despite
the guilty pleas, his church and its followers are not criminals.
Authorities say the charges were the result of a deal the church made
with court parolees assigned to community service at the church. The
church would knock off service hours in return for food stamps.
The stamps were converted to cash through two church-owned meat
markets, netting up to $20,000 a month.
After pleading guilty, the church was ordered to pay $28,000 in fines
and the cost of the investigation. The state can revoke the church's
corporate status and impose sanctions if it does not abide by the
terms of probation.

Ohio rabbi sentenced for bingo scam

CINCINNATI, June 7 (UPI) -- A 72-year-old Cincinnati Orthodox rabbi
who admitted stealing money from instant bingo games sold by his
congregation has been sentenced to three years probation and ordered
to make restitution of $1 million dollars.
Rabbi Jacob Lustig of Kneseth Israel Congregation pleaded guilty in
May to skimming the money from the pull-tab bingo games that are sold
in various stores in southwest Ohio.
Lustig, his congregation's spiritual leader for more than 20 years,
initially claimed he was innocent and accused authorities of anti-
Semitism.

Vatican to open NYC theme store

Jun 1999 5:00:32 PDT
NEW YORK, June 9 (UPI) -- The Vatican will reportedly open a store in
New York City similar to the Disney or Warner Brothers theme stores
within a year and a half.
The New York Post reports the store will sell bed linens, china, gift
boxes, stationery, and floor tiles inspired by works of art at the
Vatican Treasury Museum.
No site has been picked, but an architect has been hired and says the
stores will have a Vatican theme, complete with ceiling frescos.
Gerald Colapinto, who is in charge of handing out the licenses for the
Vatican Treasury Collection, tells the Post, ``There is no better
brand in the world.''
Colapinto says Pope John Paul has decided he wants to spend more money
helping the poor, and hopes the stores will help make the museum
self-sufficient.
The Post reports the New York City store will be the first of over 400
around the world.
The mass marketing effort follows in the steps of the Vatican Library
Line of merchandise, which includes rosary boxes, pens, key chains,
and rings with prayers inscribed inside.
Earnings from that collection go toward a multimillion dollar library
renovation.
The pope himself also has a best selling CD and book.

IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME ...: In a March 29th editorial on
ARUTZ-7, former Knesset Member Elyakim Ha'etzni, commenting on the
fighting in Kosovo, wrote, "American diplomatic failures have left
their blood-stained marks of destruction all over the world: in
Vietnam, Iran, Iraq, Beirut, Somalia, Panama, Bosnia, Arafat's
Palestine, and now Kosovo. This new method of forcing a country to
give up parts of its territory under the threat of international
attack is now being tested. Are we next in line?" Foreign Minister
Ariel Sharon stated his concern back in April that NATO military
action on behalf of rebels fighting against a sovereign state sets a
risky precedent that could have future ramifications for Israel. Now,
PLO leader Yassir Arafat, speaking Friday night in Ram'Allah at the
weekly cabinet meeting, said the international community must end the
'Israeli occupation' of 'Palestinian land' just as it ended the
persecution of the Albanians in Kosovo. Recently, other members of the
Palestinian Authority (PA/PLO) have made similar statements. Italy's
ambassador to Israel, Gian Paolo Cavarai, has also raised the
possibility of NATO intervention in the Middle East. (JERUSALEM POST,
WAFA)
VIOLENCE AND THE SACRED: Louis Rene Beres, professor at
Princeton, recently authored a paper describing the nature of the
terrorism against Israel. He wrote, "This is the true meaning of
Islamic terrorism against Israel; it is a form of sacred violence
oriented toward the sacrifice of both enemies and martyrs. It is
through the purposeful killing of Jews, today through terrorism,
tomorrow through war, that the Palestinian embarked upon jihad can buy
himself free from the penalty of dying, of being killed himself ...
Palestinian sacrificial terror is the altogether optimal fusion of
religion and politics." The paper is available on our website at:
SCHEME BACKFIRES: Six weeks before an unprecedented Geneva
Convention conference against Israel, the Europeans are backed into a
corner of their own creation. They are fretting how, after twisting
the Palestinians' arm to accept 15 July as the date for the
conference, to postpone the event, diplomatic sources at the UN said
this week. Some European Union (EU) members met last week with the
UN's Arab Group to promote the postponement of the conference, saying
it could interfere with the anticipated revival of the peace process.
The international community has also been unable to agree on the
procedures or the substantive intent of the conference. At an
emergency session in February, the General Assembly adopted a
resolution recommending that the contracting parties to the Fourth
Geneva Convention hold a conference on July 15 "on measures to enforce
the convention in the occupied Palestinian territory, including
Jerusalem". (JERUSALEM POST)
CLINTON EMBASSY WAIVER EXPECTED: US President Clinton is
likely to make imminent use of a waiver to prevent the relocation of
the American Embassy to Jerusalem, Assistant Secretary of State for
Near Eastern Affairs Martin Indyk said Tuesday. The decision is sure
to arouse the ire of several senators, who wrote to Clinton just last
week to urge that he not make "inappropriate" use of his waiver
authority, which can be renewed each six months. Advisers to those
senators have said in recent days that the administration has failed
to hold good-faith discussions on compromise proposals for averting a
waiver. (JERUSALEM POST)

WORK & MONEY, CAPITAL IDEAS
A new merger: the dollar, yen, and
euro?
Finance experts from 14 nations discuss the merits of a
single world currency
David R. Francis (francisd@csps.com)
Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
CHATHAM, MASS.
Europe, Japan, and the United States will all have a
common currency at some point.
Not now, says Richard Cooper, an economist at
Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. It is not politically realistic.
Rather, in a decade or two.
Mr. Cooper sees a common currency as a logical way to deal
with the fragility and fickleness of financial markets. Over time,
this shakiness could worsen. One reason is that financial transactions
between nations, as versus trade, will dominate foreign-exchange
markets even more than they do today.
A currency union would eliminate foreign-exchange volatility in
these three industrial areas, which produce two-thirds of the
world's output. It would add stability to what is fast becoming a
global economic system. It would facilitate trade and investment.
Cooper tossed out the idea at a conference here on "Rethinking
the International Monetary System," put on last week by the
Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.
The timing was appropriate. At the end of this week, there is a
summit of the Group of Eight in Cologne, Germany. Kosovo
promises to be the hottest topic on the agenda of President
Clinton and the leaders of Germany, Japan, Britain, France, Italy,
Canada, and Russia.
But the leaders will also look at what can be done to make the
global system less crisis prone.
They may peek briefly at whether private financial institutions in
rich countries should be required to help pay for losses emerging
nations incur during a crisis. It's not likely.
Also on the table: Whether the International Monetary Fund
should be strengthened to become a genuine "lender of last resort" in
an international crisis, much the way a national central bank will
rescue an important domestic bank in financial jeopardy. Not likely
either.
But they are likely to move ahead with greater debt relief for the
world's poorest nations, most of them in Africa.
Experts at the Fed conference, coming from 14 nations, do not
expect the Eight to make major changes in the architecture of the
international financial system anytime soon.
"What we are going to see is tinkering at the margin," says
Sebastian Edwards, an economist at the University of California,
Los Angeles.
What's more probable, says Mr. Edwards, will be changes by
individual nations. Some will impose controls on short-term capital
movements. More countries will "float" their currencies, that is, let
their value in relation to the US dollar and other currencies be
determined by sales and purchases on the foreign exchange market.
Currencies worth trillions of dollars trade on that market every day.
Also, more nations will attach their currencies to the dollar, the
euro, or the yen through what are known as "currency boards." And some
will go whole hog and "dollarize," that is, replace their own currency
with the US dollar.
Panama already uses the dollar as its currency. In Argentina, the
dollar is legal tender and widely used along with the peso. A currency
board keeps the value of one peso fixed to one dollar.
There has been considerable discussion in Argentina about going
fully with the dollar and abandoning the peso.
Pedro Pou, Argentina's top central banker, complained here that
despite eight years of a relatively inflation-free peso, it is still
not "a true national currency." People, citizens or foreigners, are
reluctant to borrow long-term in pesos, still remembering years of
hyperinflation. This raises the cost of capital used to develop the
nation.
Full adoption of the US dollar, he says, would improve
Argentina's economic performance over the next 10 years.
One theory is that currency blocs will form around the dollar, the
euro, and the yen. Then the three currency "biggies" would merge into
a single currency.
Cooper sees the creation this year of the euro by 11 European
nations as a major step in the direction of a single currency for the
industrial democracies.
But Paul Volcker, former chairman of the Federal Reserve,
doubts that any step will end financial crises, as long as greed,
fear, and hubris are "built into the human genome." It is these
characteristics that are behind crises.

From the back cover:
What is the key to ecological healing?
Author Winkie Pratney was trained as a research chemist. With
interests encompassing many disciplines in both the arts and the
sciences, he draws on a wide range of fascinating historical and
contemporary research issues, from a frankly biblical
perspective...
This thoughtful book, transcending both Western rationalism
and Eastern mysticism, offers the concerned seeker a little-
explored third view, and points toward a solution based on the
vital link between the environment and human repentance and
spiritual awakening.
---
I got it yesterday and I can't put it down. I think this book will
help anyone who has been confronted by people who "worship"
the earth to keep a more balanced view of nature and our place in
it. There are a lot of things in it that I never really stopped to
think about and I know I'm going to have to read and reread it
before I've exhausted all the avenues that open up. Really an eye
opener to the consequences of sin, and at this price, a must
have.--Moza

Dalai Lama brings together leaders of five faiths in Israel
Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: TampaBay Online (AP)
Sun Jun 13,1999 -- Though Israeli officials would not meet with him,
the Dalai Lama brought together leaders of five faiths in Jerusalem
Sunday to promote unity among theologians. The exiled Tibetan Buddhist
leader told a conference of Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus and
Shintos that a variety of religions were needed to help different
peoples heal. The Dalai Lama, who arrived Saturday for a three-day
visit, will not be received by any Israeli officials or political
leaders. Officials said China made it clear that it would be deeply
offended by any official reception for the Dalai Lama. The Buddhist
leader said he was not offended. ``My visit ... here is purely
spiritual,'' he said. Israel exports arms and other hi-tech
commodities to China and is trying to increase its trade ties there.
Still, an array of dignitaries, including Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert,
showed up for an unofficial hello. "I don't see any reason why I ...
should reject his message of cooperation between faiths," Olmert said.
Anglican bishop of San Fransisco William Swing, who helped organize
the trip, said that the Dalai Lama's presence helped dialogue between
"people who have wide differing opinions and a great deal of
existential hurt." Israelis and Palestinians also spoke at the
conference. The Dalai Lama fled to India in 1959, after an
unsuccessful revolt by Tibetans against Chinese forces which occupied
the country in 1950. He advocates independence for his homeland, or at
least full autonomy. Beijing maintains that Tibet is part of China.
Israel has said that the Dalai Lama's visit is private.
Anti-Semitic remarks made by leader of Russian movement
Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: Newsday
Sun Jun 13,1999 -- Naming Russia's secret enemy: "It's the Jews" , the
leader within the modern Cossack movement in southern Russia, Mr.
Gavrilenko was not merely spewing his anti-Semitic attitudes but was
speaking the sacred words of hundreds of thousands of his fellow
believers who need someone to blame for their hard times. "It's a
special group of people with criminal intentions," Mr. Gavrilenko
remarked, "The majority of them have a criminal past and criminal
connections. There is no such thing as greed, love for money in the
Russian character. The Jewish nation are traitors." And Gov. Nikolai
Kondratenko, has joined forces with the Cossacks, tapping into their
nationalism, encouraging them to protect Russia from non-Russians,
effectively inciting people like Mr. Gavrilenko to harass Jews and
other ethnic groups. "The governor is a patriot of Russia denouncing
everything that they are trying to impose," Mr. Gavrilenko said. He
makes no secret who they are: the Jews. Anti-Semitism has long been
intertwined with Russian history, being elevated to a murderous
national policy by Stalin just before his death in 1953. The
scapegoating of Jews has never really disappeared.
Jordan urges Arab states to adopt unified stance regarding Israel
Weekend News Today

Sun Jun 13,1999 -- Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Raouf al-Rawabdeh
urged the Arab states to put aside their disputes to overcome the
current circumstances and form a unified line able to protect the
rights of the Arab nation, adding that it is necessary to unite in
order to return the peace process to its right course. He stated that
King Abdullah Bin Hussein is making intensive communications in order
to convene the five-fold committee, adding that it will be held soon.
He said, "Barak's assumption of power in Israel was received by a good
approval by the Arab and European countries," adding that any delay in
the Arab peace process will lead to frustrations. He stated that King
Abdullah will soon visit Cairo and that there are continuous phone
calls between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and King Abdullah
regarding Arab and regional causes.
Palestinians training in Egypt

Sun Jun 13,1999 -- Officers of the Palestinian paramilitary police
force are being trained at the top army academy in Egypt. The first
contingent of Palestinian officers spent the past month completing an
intensive, advanced staff course at Nasser Military Academy in Cairo.
Following the course, a senior Palestinian security source told the

command is working to improve its effectiveness to build a recognized

Jerusalem exodus on the rise
Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: IsraelWire
Sun Jun 13,1999 -- According to the Jerusalem Municipality, there are
more residents of the capital deciding to leave than there are moving
in. In 1997, about 15,000 Jews left the capital with about 7,700
moving in, representing a net loss of some 7,300 Jewish residents.
This represents a significant average from the yearly average of 5,000
seen in previous years. City officials added the increase in persons
leaving has also affected the Hareidi (ultra-Orthodox) sector, which
represented 20 percent of the total number. Most of the Hareidi
families were young couples who explained they just cannot afford the
housing rates in Jerusalem. Only one-half of a percent of those
persons who left blamed it on the Arab-Jewish conflict and two percent
on the conflict between secular and ultra-Orthodox.
Arafat: Stop occupation of Palestinians just as in Kosovo
Weekend News Today
By Andra Brack
Source: Jerusalem Post
Sun Jun 13,1999 -- PA Chairman Yasser Arafat said that the
international community must end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian
land just as it ended the persecution of the Albanians in Kosovo, the
Palestinian news agency reported Saturday. Arafat was speaking Friday
night in Ramallah at the weekly cabinet meeting. "The president
said... that just as the international community managed to put an end
to the oppression in Kosovo and reach a peace agreement, the
international community is called upon to revitalize the peace process
in the Middle East and put an end to the Israeli occupation of
Palestinian land," the WAFA statement said. PA negotiator Saeb Erekat
said Saturday night that the cabinet statement did not intend to make
an analogy between Kosovo and the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He
explained that US mediators had stayed away from the Middle East in
recent months because of the Israeli election campaign and the Kosovo
crisis. Now it's time to get back to work, he added. "The only thing
intended is that we hope the international community will be able once
again to focus on the peace process, to revive it and to push it to a
satisfactory conclusion," said Erekat. Prime Minister-elect Ehud Barak
is reportedly considering proposing that Israel and the Palestinians
skip the Wye agreement and go straight into negotiations on a final
peace accord. But the Palestinian leadership rejected this idea
Friday. Planning Minister Nabil Shaath told reporters the cabinet
called on Barak to implement all the interim agreements, including
Wye, to freeze all settlement expansion, and to halt construction of
Jewish housing in Arab areas of Jerusalem. "He must fulfill Israel's
commitments, especially stopping settlement activity and implementing
the unfulfilled commitments of the peace process," Shaath said.

*** Europeans vote for new Parliament
BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - Overshadowed by events in Kosovo, a quiet
campaign for seats in the European Union's newly assertive assembly
wrapped up Sunday with voting in 11 nations. Leaders had held high
hopes of increased public interest after the European Parliament's
role in ousting the EU executive body in mid-March amid revelations of
endemic cronyism and corruption. But turnout was lackluster Thursday
in Britain, the Netherlands and Denmark and Friday in Ireland. Voters
continued to show apathy in the race on Sunday, as the EU's 11
remaining members held elections. Turnout was only 45% in Germany and
47% in France, where the conservative right of President Jacques
Chirac was pummeled. See

*** Rabbi's ruling sparks outrage
JERUSALEM (AP) - A rabbi's reported ruling against giving medical
attention to non-Jews on the Sabbath sparked calls Sunday for the army
to strip the rabbi of his combat officer rank. A letter signed by
Rabbi Amicha Rontsky appeared in a religious journal this month,
declaring: "Of course the life of a Gentile has value ... but the
value of the Sabbath is more important." Meimad, a dovish religious
movement, published an exchange of letters between Rontsky and the
deputy commander of a reserves infantry brigade, and Yoske Ahituv, a
religious scholar. Ahituv had heard of a religious ruling by Rontsky
instructing religious army medics to avoid treating wounded
Palestinian guerrillas on the Sabbath, and sought clarification. See

*** Insects may help solve murders
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Investigators realized centuries ago
insects could help them solve murders. In China, legend has it,
authorities asked villagers to lay their tools in the sunlight after a
slaying involving a sickle. Flies flew to one of the displayed tools,
prompting a swift confession from its owner. Scientific advances
aside, that's about how it works now. Police collect maggots, flies
and beetles from a crime scene and send them to a forensic
entomologist so he can pinpoint the time and location of death.
Trouble is, police aren't scientists. They don't always know what to
collect and how to preserve the samples. Enter Penn State's three-day

*** Saying 'I do' to wedding insurance
NEW YORK (AP) - A trip to the altar is one of the most important - and
expensive - journeys in a person's life, often requiring loads of
planning and financial resources to get there. But what happens if the
reception hall suddenly shuts down, the bridal shop holding the
wedding party's gowns goes belly-up, or the groom has an attack of
acute appendicitis just before the ceremony? More than likely, the big
event will have to be postponed, possibly at great loss to whomever is
paying for it unless special insurance coverage was taken out ahead of
time. With the average cost of a wedding now at around $20,000, more
and more people are obtaining insurance to protect themselves from
unforeseen disasters, industry experts say. See

Doomsday asteroid lost in space
There is only a one-in-10-million chance asteroid 1998 OX4 will strike
the Earth -- but red-faced scientists admit they've lost track of it,
and warn that if we're not more vigilant, next time we may not be so
lucky. Nigel Hawkes reports.
Nigel Hawkes
The Times of London
The good news is that astronomers have identified an asteroid that
could be on a collision course with Earth. The bad news is that they
have lost it.
The object, called 1998 OX4, was found last year by a team at the
University of Arizona, who tracked it for two weeks.
The information the scientists gathered gave an approximate orbit for
the object, which is believed to be several hundred metres in diameter
and capable of continent-wide destruction if it were to collide with
Earth.
A team at the University of Pisa, led by Dr. Andrea Milani, used the
orbital information to calculate the chances of a collision. He told a
conference in Turin last week that there was a one-in-10-million
chance that it would hit the Earth in 2046 -- slightly better odds
than winning a major lottery.
The asteroid is only the second such object found with a non-zero
chance of a collision. And while a one-in-10-million chance is not
enough to lose sleep over, it is embarrassing that 1998 OX4 has now
been lost. The problem is that the orbit was not known with sufficient
accuracy to track it.
If it could be found, the chances are that more precise observations
would dispel the fear of a collision.
But Professor Tom Gehrels, a member of the team at the University of
Arizona that originally identified 1998 OX4, said that it is
relatively common for asteroids to go in and out of sight. "You try,
with every discovery, to track the object as long as possible. It went
into the Milky Way and then had a very limited range of observation,"
but with luck it should come back into view -- quite when, however,
nobody knows.
"It is a question of how long you can follow up each object and then
recover it again after two or three years. This is always the question
with any asteroid you discover."
Duncan Steel, a British astronomer who specializes in watching out for
potential asteroid collisions, says the dilemma posed by 1998 OX4 will
become increasingly common.
"The searches being done in the U.S. are finding more and more objects
that could potentially collide with Earth -- so many that there aren't
enough people to keep track of them," he says.
"The rate at which these objects are found has increased by three or
four times in the past few years. False alarms are getting more
frequent. Where we fall down is in following up on the original
finds."
He is not too concerned about 1998 OX4. "But sooner or later, we are
going to find one with a one-in-a-thousand chance of colliding, and
that could set off a panic," he says.
Next week in England's House of Lords, Lord Tanlaw will raise the
issue of whether the British government has any plans to establish a
national "Spaceguard" program of observation for near-Earth asteroids.
Dr. Mark Baily of Armagh Observatory says he believes such a program
is necessary and inevitable. "There are going to be more and more of
these objects found. If we don't have a national agency, advice on the
real level of risk will have to come from astronomers who do this sort
of work in their spare time, or from those with no allegiance to the
United Kingdom," such as researchers on the Near-Earth Asteroid
Tracking program in California. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena, identified more than 5,000 previously unknown asteroids in
its first year of operation.
Eleanor Helin, from the laboratory, who has been searching for
asteroids for 25 years, said that the Earth's only protection from
asteroids is to find them well before they hit and send up rockets to
shatter or divert them. She hopes that science will be able to predict
10 years ahead of any direct hit as a shorter time may make evasive
action difficult.
The lesson of 1998 OX4 is that, having found near-Earth objects, they
should not be lost again, he says. "I won't lose any sleep over it,"
Mr. Baily says. "The risk it will hit us is much less than the risk of
a totally unknown object doing so. All these calculations show is that
we should go on tracking it if we knew where it was."
Dr. Steel does not rate highly the chances of finding 1998 OX4 again.
"It's like finding a needle in a haystack, and then throwing it back
in again," he says.

Christians apologize for Crusades 900 years on
June 13, 1999
1:50 PM EDT (1750 GMT)
GAZA (Reuters) -- After hundreds of years, a group of Christians from
the West paid a visit to the Gaza Strip on Sunday to offer apologies to
descendants of Muslim victims of the Crusades.
"We deeply regret the atrocities committed in the name of Christ by
our predecessors," read a message delivered to a Palestinian cabinet
minister by 14 members of the Reconciliation Walk group of
evangelical Christians mainly from Europe and North America.
On a tour of the Middle East, the group begged forgiveness for the
violence of 11th-13th century military expeditions mobilized by
Western Christendom to try to capture holy places under Muslim
control.
"We renounce greed, hatred and fear...and condemn all violence done
in the name of Jesus Christ...Forgive us for allowing his name to be
associated with death," they said in their apology.
Palestinian Telecommunications Minister Imad Falouji said in
response that new generations of Muslims, Jews and Christians a
deserved a future without hatred and fear. But Falouji did not say
whether Muslims would accept the apology.
The eight major crusades to the Holy Land that began in 1095
ultimately failed to hold Christian sites, and by 1291, Acre, the last
Crusader foothold in Muslim-ruled Palestine, was lost.
The Christian group, which said it aims at reconciliation with Jews and
Orthodox Christians as well as Muslims, said it offered love and
brotherhood in contrast to Crusaders it said "were motivated by
hatred and prejudice."
Gaza Mufti Abdel-Karim al-Kahlout, a religious authority of the
overwhelmingly Muslim strip, said that while the Christians were
apologising for acts committed long before they were born, present-
day "Israel is just an extension of the Crusades."

Dates Set for Pope's Holy Land Trip
.c The Associated Press
By LAURIE COPANS
JERUSALEM (AP) - Pope John Paul II has set tentative dates for
visiting the Holy Land, a Vatican official said Monday, giving the
strongest indication yet that the trip will take place.
Israeli officials said the pope planned to arrive in Jerusalem on
March 20.
``A papal visit is in the very advanced stages of planning,''
Monsignor Richard Mathes, the Vatican's cultural attache in Israel,
told a conference of religious leaders.
Israeli Tourism Minister Moshe Katsav had announced earlier this year
that the pope would visit Israel and the Palestinian areas next March,
but the Vatican did not confirm the trip.
Israel and the Palestinian Authority hope a visit by the pope will
boost tourism during millennium celebrations. Some four million
tourists are expected to visit in 2000.
The Vatican apparently is waiting for progress in Israeli-Palestinian
peace talks under Israel's prime minister-elect, Ehud Barak, before
making a formal announcement.
One of the issues on the table in negotiations is the future of
Jerusalem. The Palestinians claim the eastern sector, captured by
Israel from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war, as a future capital.
Until now, the pope has been reluctant to visit Jerusalem, apparently
because of concern that his presence could be interpreted as support
for Israeli rule over the entire city.
It would be the first papal visit to Jerusalem since Pope Paul VI
visited the city in 1964.
Mathes said the Vatican conditioned a visit on calm in Jerusalem,
Nazareth and Bethlehem.

Yes to Human Cloning; According to RAEL Eternal Life Scientifically
Within Our Reach
MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--An exceptional conference-debate
is organized, reuniting defenders of human cloning and even participants
in this field, Friday, June 18 in Montreal.
RAEL, spiritual leader of the Raelian Religion which claims that life on
Earth was created scientifically in laboratories by extraterrestrials
whose name, ELOHIM, is found in the Hebrew Bible and was mistranslated by
the word "God", and which also claims that Jesus' resurrection was, in
fact, a cloning performed by the ELOHIM - will hold the First Bilingual
Conference on Human Cloning in Montreal.
RAEL's guests are among the most influential people in the field today.
They are:
-- Dr. Richard Seed, Ph.D., is a trained physicist and has great expertise
in the transfer of embryos and fertility treatments. He is a practicing
Christian and Methodist. He has made numerous media appearances to defend
his position in favor of cloning and announced his desire to clone the
first human being.
-- Dr. Brigitte Boisselier, Ph.D., Scientific Director of CLONAID, the
first company in the world to offer human cloning. Clonaid offers an
opportunity to couples with fertility problems or homosexual couples to
have a child cloned from one of them.
-- Randolphe Wicker is a pioneer in the defense of individual liberties.
Notably, he founded "Clone Rights United Front" the first American
Association for the defense of the right to human cloning.
Don't miss this historical event. The first bilingual conference on human
cloning in Montreal will be held at Salle Gesu, 1200 Bleury Street,
Friday, June 18 at 7 p.m.
A press conference is scheduled at the same place Thursday, June 17 at 3
p.m.

*** Update: Jews in Ethiopia to go to Israel
JERUSALEM (AP) - Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
ordered the government to bring thousands of Jews left behind in
Ethiopia to Israel quickly. Some 2,500-3,500 Jews in the Quara region
of Ethiopia were left behind when some 21,500 others came to Israel
years ago, and have been trying to reach the Jewish state ever since.
Since an April decision to speed up immigration, about 100 Ethiopian
Jews have arrived in Israel. Netanyahu intervened Sunday and told
ministers in his government to do more to bring the entire group to
Israel, said his spokesman Aviv Bushinsky. Netanyahu's term as prime
minister is drawing to a close. He lost the May 17 election to Ehud
Barak, who has until July 9 to form a government. See

*** Dalai Lama optimistic about 2000
JERUSALEM (AP) - In a city best known for its religious strife, the
Dalai Lama walked along the cobblestone alleys Monday carrying a
message of peace. Donning a skullcap at the Western Wall, posing for
pictures with black-robed priests at Jesus' tomb and touring Islam's
third holiest site, he said conflict is unavoidable, but that with the
right attitude, problems are easier to overcome. The next millennium
could hold a better future for humanity and the people of Tibet, he
later told a news conference. Human beings are learning from their
mistakes, he said. "I think that everywhere the desire for peace,
nonviolence, coexistence, self-determination and the concern for
ecology are becoming universal," he said. See

*** 2000 may fuel Jerusalem Syndrome
JERUSALEM (AP) - Jerusalem Syndrome strikes with little warning.
After a few days in the holy city, seemingly normal pilgrims imagine
they are biblical figures, sing psalms at the top of their lungs,
preach to passers-by or dress up in hotel bedsheets. Jerusalem
clergymen and officials came together Monday to discuss ways to spot
and deal with the mental illness, which one psychiatrist says may
strike as many as one in 100 pilgrims and disrupt Jesus' 2000th
birthday celebrations. Protestants are more vulnerable, apparently
because their beliefs are less structured than those of the Catholics,
Monsignor Richard Mathes, the Vatican's cultural attache in Israel,
said. See

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) - Despite a handful of complaints, tattooed
Barbie will not be grounded. But her friends will be free of body art.
Mattel said it received about a dozen complaints over tattooed
Butterfly Art Barbie, a doll introduced last year with a small
butterfly tattoo on her stomach. The package includes stick-on tattoos
for young girls. Mattel, the nation's largest toymaker, has not halted
production on Butterfly Art Barbie, which is selling well, Mattel Inc.

Pilot project will test health cards with computer chip
Allison Lampert
The Gazette
LAVAL, Que. - This fall, hundreds of Laval residents will be able to
see the date of their next doctor's appointment on their home
television set.
It's part of a two-year pilot project announced yesterday that will
see the medical files of 800 Laval patients accessed through new,
high-tech health cards that contain a computer chip. The card will
also permit doctors, pharmacists and other members of the health
sector to view a patient's medical history, allergies and other
information.
"It goes both ways," said David Cliche, a local member of the National
Assembly, during a news conference yesterday on both the card and on
Laval's new network of outpatient services.
"It will allow us to better follow the patient, to better control
their medication and to give specialists, clinical workers and doctors
vital information about this patient," Mr. Cliche said. The chip
provides access to a central computer where health information is
stored, he explained. The user must have the card's code to access the
information.
Laval's regional health board will complete all technical preparations
for the project during the summer and will begin testing it at the end
of September. The board has already chosen the 800 participants. They
were culled from the 1,200 patients who now receive treatment through
Laval's outpatient-care network.

According to many, the great pyramids were built to commemorate and
observe a supernova explosion that occurred in the year 4000 BC. Dr.
Anthony Hewish, 1974 Nobel Prize winner in physics, discovered a
rhythmic series of radio pulses which he proved were emissions from a
star that had exploded around 4000 BC. The Freemasons begin their
calendar from AL, "In the Year of Light," found by adding 4000 to the
modern year. Thus 1990+4000=5990 AL. George Michanowsky wrote in "The
Once and Future Star" that "The ancient Sumerian
cuneiform...described a giant star exploding within a triangle formed
by...Zeta Puppis, Gamma Velorum, and Lambda Velorum...located in the
southern sky...[An] accurate star catalogue now stated that the
blazing star that had exploded within the triangle would again be
seen by man in 6000 years." According to the Freemason's calendar it
will occur in the year 2000, and indeed it will.
The spacecraft called Galileo is on its way to Jupiter, a baby star
with a gaseous makeup exactly the same as our sun, with a load of
49.7 pounds of plutonium, supposedly being used as batteries to power
the craft. When its final orbit decays in December 1999, Galileo will
deliver its payload into the center of Jupiter. The unbelievable
pressure that will be encountered will cause a reaction exactly as
occurs when an atomic bomb is exploded by an implosion detonator. The
plutonium will explode in an atomic reaction, lighting the hydrogen
and helium atmosphere of Jupiter and resulting in the birth of the
star that has already been named Lucifer. The world will interpret it
as a sign of tremendous religious significance. It will fulfill
prophecy...
Simultaneously a vault containing the ancient records of the earth
will be opened in Egypt. The return of Lucifer and the opening of the
vault will usher in the millennium. A great celebration has already
been planned by the Millennium Society to take place at the pyramids
in Egypt.

Subject: [BPR] - Fred Miller's Panorama of Revelation book
From: bpr-list@philologos.org(BPR)
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 09:15:02 -0500
From: DELPHICK@msn.sprint.sa.gov.au
It has always been a bit of a mystery to me as to why the Lord
wouldn't make some mention of the terrible things that have occurred
to the church and to christians during the almost two thousand years
that have followed Pentecost. As far as I am concerned, it is a mystery
no more! Fred Miller, whom has a web-page at
<http://www.ao.net/~fmoeller/index.htm> and has written some very special and
worthwhile reading studies on Isaiah and Zechariah in the recent past,
has put his book 'Revelation: A Panorama of the Gospel Age'. This is,
as far as I am concerned, and I'm sure many of you will also agree, a
book that needed to be written.
This is not to say that the scenarios put forward by some that see
Revelation unfolding in a seven year period are necessarily wrong; it
is just that this fits, and fits well. It also ties in nicely with the many
predictions that currently abound concerning the 6,000 year mark and
the feeling, dreams, and visions that many of us have and are having,
that something is afoot. This book cleans out some of the prophecies
of Revelation that have already occurred. What this does not do, is
provide the time-scale over which time this is to occur.
What follows is a chronological summary only. You will need to visit
Fred's site to gain the background for each of the events given plus
quotes from many other scholars, including Isaac Newton, and lots of
other fascinating bits of information. You will no doubt be surprised at
some of the interpretations but you should approach this with an
open mind, shutting off all that you have read previously, because,
like Fred, all other commentators are human, and just as likely to be
wrong. You will see, when you read Fred's book, that he sees some
things in the future as being only spiritual in nature whilst others, he
notes, do not agree with him. I think that spiritual matters have
physical counterparts, but these counterparts may not be as drastic as
their spiritual ones.
I have added, in [ ], a little that Fred may not have been aware of or
considered.

day war in Israel])
Predictions for this bowl or vial made in the 1700 and 1800s that are
startling considering the stability or non-existence of these things at
the time:
-European Union
-Fall of Papacy
-Russian power
-Beast (Papacy)/Dragon (Devil)/False Prophet (Mohammedanism) in
league
-[considering the overtures being made by the Pope to Iraq; the
statements coming from the Papacy regarding Jesus not being the
only way; and other disturbing activities, how likely is this?]
-Russia, Papacy, Mohammedanism league
Fred predicts:
-Christianity will spread from the Ukraine into Russia
-This may or may not occur after a physical armageddon war
-this war may be spiritual, occurring now [and the defeated
Russia is being portrayed in their current embattled leader]
There is much more in this book; more than enough to convince the
reader of the massive coincidentality present. Anyone worth their
weight must assess coincidences like this in the same way that, say,
the coincidence that a racing car is found on a race-track.
Once again I would also promote Fred Miller's Isaiah work. I have only
read a part of his work on Zechariah and so an endorsement would
only be based on the Isaiah book and the Panorama book. Read it
anyway!
I trust that this review will give you peace and enlightenment. Such
studies should not remain hidden away.
God Bless, David Elphick

Subject: [BPR] - "Scarlet and the Beast" Book Excerpt
From: bpr-list@philologos.org(BPR)

"In 1982 and 1986 three secular revisionist authors, Michael
Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln published 'Holy
Blood, Holy Grail' followed by 'The Messianic Legacy.' These
two books dramatically reveal a secret order structured in the
manner of Freemasonry, and founded in Europe twelve centuries
before the Grand Lodge was officially formed in 1717. This order
protects both the Holy Grail and the Merovingian bloodline,
which bloodline carried Mystery Babylon into the Catholic
Church in 496 AD.
"The Holy Grail, of course, is the so-called cup from which Jesus
drank at the Last Supper. The Merovingians, owners of the Holy
Grail, teach that Jesus fathered children by Mary Magdalene. The
Merovingians claim to be the offspring of that 'holy' union, and
as such, assert they are Jews of the Davidic line.
"In Revelation 17:3-5 the apostle John describes a vision, which
Rev. J.R. Church in 'Guardians of the Grail' believes is fulfilled in
the Grail legend. The Whore of Babylon is holding in her hand a
golden cup full of blasphemy. Church believes the cup is the
blasphemous Holy Grail.
The passage above goes on to quote J.R. Church's belief that the
anti-Christ will come from a secret order of the Merovingians, the
Priory of Sion (Sion is French for Zion). This secret order has
over 9000 members of various religions -- Jews, Protestants,
Roman Catholics, etc -- but whose teachings follow those of their
"greatest prophet -- whom they believe to be Buddha."
Another aspect of the Holy Grail legend involves the spear that
pierced Jesus' side. This spear is called the Spear of Longinus or
the Spear of Destiny. The legend states that whomever
possesses this spear also possesses or controls the world via the
spear's "mystical powers." Hitler, supposedly, later possessed
this spear.
The above is from a three volume work by John Daniel titled
"Scarlet and the Beast: A History of the War Between English
and French Freemasonry" (pg 60, Vol I., ISBN: 0963507990).
It is a highly detailed and fascinating work. Although apparently
out of stock, I was able to purchase it through Amazon.com
(though it did take several weeks for it to arrive). I believe I
paid $57, but I didn't search elsewhere, so perhaps you can
find it for a lesser price.
I'll qoute from Daniel's Introduction to give you a better idea of
the scope of this work:
"'Scarlet and the Beast' will examine fifteen hundred years of
political, financial and spiritual intrique between two
conspiratorial powers. As a seasoned investigative trainer, I
have examined circumstantial evidence, evaluated it according to
hard evidence, and combined what is worthy with the hard facts
to develop a story that has intentionally been hidden for a
millennium and a half...
"Volume I ... will trace each occult power as it labors separately
for world dominion. We will examine the four great political
revolutions each spawned: the Glorious Revolution in Great
Britain (1688), the American Revolution (1776), the French
Revolution (1789), and the Russian Revolution (1917). We will
address as well their activities through the two World Wars.
Finally, we will examine God's Word to see what His prophets say
about Freemasonry and the Beast empire it will erect in the last
days.
"[In Volume II we] will journey back to the patriarchs of ancient
Babylon, from whence are Freemasonry's roots. We will discuss
Ham, Cush, Nimrod, and his wife Semiramis, and examine how
Freemasonry's ceremonies are linked to Babylon's fertility
worship of male and female gods. We will learn why the
Babylonian religion hid itself and why it continues today in scret
societies such as Freemasonry.
"Volume III ... places the Harlot's cup of abomination squarely in
the hands of English Freemasonry. We will learn how and why
drugs have been used in all eastern mystery religions, and trace
Freemasonry's involvement in drugs to the British Opium Wars
against China. This [volume] will examine English Freemasonry's
role as the world's drug financier and money launderer, and
French Freemasonry's role as the world's drug trafficker. We will
examine the horrifying prospect of the nuclear destruction of
London by the Beast, and how afterwards the Beast will mark the
world." (pg. 53-54, Vol. I).

Scientists say Holy Land pollen found on Shroud of Turin
JERUSALEM (AP) Plant imprints and pollen found on the Shroud of
Turin, revered by many as Jesus' burial shroud, support the premise
that it originated in the Holy Land, two Israeli scientists said Tuesday.
"In the light of our findings, it is highly probable that the shroud did
in fact come from this part of the world," said Avinoam Danin, a
botany professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
The botanists did not address the issue of the age of the linen cloth,
which was brought to France by a 14th-century crusader and has been
enshrined since 1578 in a cathedral in Turin, Italy. About 13 feet long
and 3 feet wide, it bears the image of a man with wounds similar to
those suffered by Jesus.
In 1988, scientists tested scraps of the shroud with Vatican approval
and concluded it dated back to between 1260 and 1390. They can't
explain how the image was made, and some experts have said
contamination might have affected the carbon-14 dating tests.
The shroud also includes the images of some plants, and Danin
identified one as the bean caper (Zygophyllum dumosum), which he
said grows only in Israel, Jordan and Egypt's Sinai desert.
Two other plants whose images were found on the shroud were the
Rock Rose (Cistus creticus) which grows throughout the Middle East;
and the Goundelia tournefortii tumbleweed, believed by some
Christians to be the material of the crown of thorns.
Traces of pollen taken from the shroud are from plants found in Israel
and neighboring countries, including the bean caper and the
tumbleweed appearing on the shroud, according to Uri Baruch, an
expert on pollen at the Israel Antiquities Authority.
Danin and Baruch both refused to discuss the authenticity of the
shroud, but said their findings show that it was very probably from
the Holy Land.
The flowers "could have been picked up fresh in the fields. A few of
the species could be found in the markets of Jerusalem in the spring,"
Danin said.
The Roman Catholic Church has never claimed the cloth as a holy
relic, but it has attracted pilgrims to Turin since the Middle Ages.
The shroud went on display in a bulletproof case for several weeks
last year and will next go on view in 2000, for Holy Year celebrations.
Pope John Paul II, who knelt in silent prayer before the cloth last year,
urged scientists to do more testing of the linen.

SCIENTISTS CALCULATE ODDS OF DOOMSDAY SCENARIOS FOR SOLAR SYSTEM
"Some say the world will end in fire. Some say in ice." -- Robert
Frost
CHICAGO -- For a poet, Robert Frost was a pretty good scientist, say
astrophysicists Fred Adams and Greg Laughlin. Frost's fire-or-ice
scenario neatly sums up two outcomes from their new study of possible
future encounters between our solar system and passing stars.
While other astrophysicists study how the universe began, Adams and
Laughlin are fascinated by how it will end. In a presentation at the
American Astronomical Society meeting held here May 31-June 3, Adams
presented their apocalyptic visions of what could happen to our solar
system in the next 3.5 billion years.
Laughlin and Adams used a computer and statistical processing
calculations to model more than 200,000 interactions between binary
stars passing by our solar system and orbits of the Earth, sun, and
four outer planets, especially Jupiter.
"Jupiter is vulnerable to gravitational interactions with a passing
star," said Adams, an associate professor of physics at the
University of Michigan. "Because of its large mass, even a modest
disruption of Jupiter's orbit could have a catastrophic effect on
Earth. The chances of such an encounter either hurling the Earth out
into space or plunging it into the sun during the next 3.5 billion
years are about one in 100,000 -- much greater than your chances of
winning the Michigan lottery."
Other possibilities and their estimated odds of occurrence include:
Doubling of the eccentricities of Neptune's orbit (one in 400), Earth
being directly ejected from the solar system by a passing star (one
in 2.2 million), Earth being captured by a passing star (one in 3.6
million), and the solar system capturing another star (one in
300,000).
Without one of the escape scenarios modeled in the Adams-Laughlin
study, the Earth's long-term future is grim. During the next 3.5
billion years, our aging sun will increase in size and grow more than
twice as bright as it is today. When this happens, "the Earth's
fragile biosphere will become seriously compromised," Adams said.
The alternative to eventual incineration is being thrown out of the
solar system into deep space. "The surface biosphere would rapidly
shut down and oceans would freeze solid within one million years, but
life could continue for some time near hydrothermal vents on the
ocean floor, which are warmed by radioactive heat from deep within
the Earth," said Laughlin, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of
California-Berkeley.
Adams and Laughlin's detailed models for a frozen Earth have
interesting implications for extra-terrestrial life. Adams maintains
that liquid oceans could exist beneath thick ice sheets on many
planets or moons of giant planets in the galaxy, especially planets
that develop past the "snowline" in the planetary formation disk.
"The snowline indicates the temperature where water ice can form in
disk material," Adams said. "The easiest places to get a large volume
of water onto a rocky planet or moon are places where it's cold
enough to form ice.
"Since water is vital to the existence of life as we understand it,
many people have suggested Jupiter's moon, Europa, as a good
candidate for supporting life," Adams added. "Our work suggests that
the most likely places for extra-terrestrial life to develop would be
in liquid oceans under ice. In other words, life on frozen icy bodies
like Europa may be much more common in the galaxy than life on
planets with liquid water on the surface like Earth. If true, this
shift would greatly affect the possible branches of biological
evolution in these extra-terrestrial environments."
"Even though our solar system has never been disrupted by a passing
star, these results imply that interactions between binaries and
planets may be more common than has been believed," Laughlin said.
"It's possible that millions of planetary systems throughout the
galaxy have been affected by these binary scattering events,
especially in the dense clusters where stars often form."
Noting that many of the recently discovered planets in other solar
systems have unusual elliptical orbits, Adams and Laughlin have also
suggested that some of these orbits could be the result of a close
encounter with a passing star or pair of stars. (University of
Michigan press release)
