Israeli court remands three ultra-Orthodox suspects
in custody

JERUSALEM, Nov 27 (AFP) A Jerusalem court on Friday ordered three
ultra-Orthodox Jews to be held in pre-trial detention, on suspicion of
setting fire to a flat used by Christians.

A fourth suspect was put under house arrest until the trial.

In an incident at the beginning of November, a number of masked
attackers wrecked and then set fire to a flat in Mea Shearim,
Jerusalem's main ultra-Orthodox neighbourhood.

The flat was used by three Swiss women, who were thought to be
carrying out missionary work aimed at converting Jews to Christianity.

A few days later, another flat close to the area, belonging to the son
of an ultra-Orthodox family who had left the community, was also
wrecked.

The police arrested two suspects who accused the young man of being a
non-believer, who ignored the Sabbath and other Jewish religious laws.

The secular majority in Israel was shocked by the violence of the
attacks, and especially by the fact that spiritual leaders of the
ultra-Orthodox community did not condemn them.

The judge hearing the case criticised the police for failing to detain
anyone when the first attack took place.

Pope issues decree on Year 2000 celebrations

VATICAN CITY, Nov 27 (AFP) - Celebrations marking the millennium would
have two centres -- the Vatican and the Holy Land -- Pope John Paul II
said in a papal bull issued Friday.

"May the jubilee serve to advance mutual dialogue until the day when
all of us together, Jews, Christians and Moslems, will exchange the
greeting of peace in Jerusalem," the text says.

The pope decreed that "the Great Jubilee of the Year 2,000 will begin
on Christmas Eve 1999 with the opening of the holy door in Saint
Peter's Basilica in the Vatican."

The pontiff also called on Christians to issue "a warm invitation to
share our joy with the followers of other religions" and to show
charity towards "those who are poor and excluded."

"The human race is facing forms of slavery which are new and more
subtle than those of the past, and for far too many people freedom
remains a word without meaning," the text says.

It calls for the creation of "a new culture of international
solidarity and cooperation where all, particularly wealthy nations and
the private sector, accept responsibility for an economic model that
serves everyone."

Sat Nov 28 , 1998 -- Germany's interior minister supports giving the
Islamic religion the same official status as the Roman Catholic and
Protestant churches, making it eligible for government funds, a news
magazine reported Saturday. Granting Islam the government status could
help set a national standard for introducing Islamic teaching in
public schools, Otto Schily was quoted by Focus as saying.

The new center-left Social Democrat-Greens Coalition government, is
eager to develop new policies acknowledging the multiethnic quality
of modern Germany. It has proposed relaxing citizenship laws to make
it easier for foreign nationals to become Germans. Schily's comments
followed a controversial ruling by a Berlin court last month giving
the Islamic Federation, representing 12 of the city's 70 mosques, the
right to organize Islamic religious instruction for public school
students.

Sat Nov 28 , 1998 -- On Nov. 24, the Greek news agency reported that
Greece and Egypt will hold their first joint military exercise, in the
Eastern Mediterranean. Scheduled from Nov. 27 through Dec. 2, the
exercise, code-named "Alexandria-98", will involve two frigates from
each country. The location and timing of this exercise is meant as a
show of force against the growing Turkey-Israeli alliance. This
represents a major shift in Egyptian policy. Egypt has rejected
attempts to draw it into the Turkish-Israeli bloc, and has condemned
Israeli behavior on a number of fronts, but it has not yet joined
Greece in active confrontation with Turkey and Israel.

From the Camp David accords until quite recently, Egypt has been one
of the U.S.'s most reliable Arab allies. However Egypt, like Syria,
Saudi Arabia and Iran, has been disturbed by recent trends in U.S.
policy, including the tacitly U.S.-backed Israeli-Turkish alliance,
Washington's predominantly pro-Israel position in the Middle East
process, and Washington'sfailure to develop consistent responses to
Iraqi provocations. Yet despite common concerns, no Arab or Persian
country had been able to hold a clear leadership role and create a
unified regional position.

Egypt, Syria, and Iraq have not been on excellent terms with each
other, and none of these countries has the overwhelming political
clout needed to fill such a role. Saudi Arabia has not only been in
the middle of a succession crises but also has been crippled by low
oil prices and its reliance of the U.S. for the purchase of most of
its oil.

It is certain that there has been growing dissatisfaction in
Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States and Iran with the U.S.
policies. For quite some time, this trend has been closely monitored.
Until now, no regime in the region has been able to reconcile the
interests of the Greeks, the Persians, and the Arabs. Russia, in an
attempt to reassert its influence in the region and in order to force
the U.S. to deal with it as an equal, is assuming a leadership role
in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean. This is an alarming
outcome, especially for what it portends for U.S. interests in
Russia's backyard--Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia.

China may be developing an anti-satellite laser

Sun Nov 29 , 1998 -- A Pentagon study warns that China may be
developing an anti-satellite laser that could disable the U.S.
military's orbiting reconnaissance network, the Los Angeles Times
reported Saturday. The equipment -- possibly developed with the help
of former Soviet scientists -- would enable China to fire a laser beam
hundreds of miles into space to cripple America's fleet of "spies in
the sky," the Pentagon said in the report released earlier this month.
Hundreds of military satellites orbiting Earth give the United States
and allied forces logistical information about enemy troops and arms.
The satellites also assist military communications, navigation, and
other tactical information gathering. (AP)

BAVARIAN RESEARCHERS SIMULATE CONDITIONS AT EARTH'S CORE

By applying great pressure and immense heat to rock samples from deep
within the earth, geologists at the University of Bayreuth are
simulating an underground adventure along the lines of Jules Verne's
Journey to the Center of the Earth. Researchers say that to this date,
no one has ever bored deeper than ten kilometers (6.2 miles) below the
earth's surface. But the Bayreuth laboratory has been able to
approximate geological conditions as deep as 800 kilometers (496
miles). "We have developed procedures here that are unique in all of
Europe. There are only two other institutions in the entire world
conducting similar experiments" says Friedrich Seifert, director of
the Bavarian Geological Institute in Bayreuth.

The principle behind the project is fairly simple. Common scientific
knowledge has it that the closer one getsto the earth's white-hot,
liquid center, the higher the pressure and the temperature. At a depth
of 800 kilometers, the pressure is 260,000 times that of the earth's
atmosphere, and the temperature climbs to 1,800 degrees Celsius (3,272
degrees Fahrenheit). Seifert's team is "journeying" toward the earth's
core by taking samples of rock from higher up in the mantle and
subjecting them to heat and pressure similar to that of the earth's
deeper layers. The instrument used to create such an effect is about
the size of a hand mirror, says Seifert. It presses the sample between
the points of two diamonds. Over a surface area that small, pressures
can be reached that are millions of times that of the atmosphere. Of
course, the sample itself is but a sliver - up to 300 times as thin as
a human hair.

Through such experiments, geologists can gain important information
about how earthquakes occur and volcanoes erupt. They can also gather
insights about climate. For example, one researcher discovered that,
contrary to textbook theory, the rock that makes up the earth's mantle
can bind water. He believes the earth conceals an underground
storehouse capable of accumulating more water than in the oceans,
which might account for the variations geologists have observed in sea
level. Another laboratory participant found evidence discounting a
theory explaining the extinction of the dinosaurs. The theory goes
that a meteorite ten kilometers in diameter collided with a carbonate
layer in the earth's mantle, releasing large amounts of carbon dioxide
. The resulting greenhouse effect destroyed the plants that were the
dinosaur's main foodstuff. In Bayreuth, researchers were able to test
this hypothesis by simulating the 65-million-year-old collision. The
results: The release of carbon dioxide was minimal. The real cause of
the dinosaur's demise remains a mystery.

The Catholic Church must "implore forgiveness" for the injustices
it committed in the past, Pope John Paul said Nov. 27,
proclaiming 2000 as a special Holy Year. In a papal pronouncement
titled Incarnationis Mysterium (The Mystery of the Incarnation),
the 78-year-old pope said that Catholics can earn indulgences for
their sins during 2000 by making pilgrimages to the Holy Land or
certain churches, or by doing good deeds such as visiting the
sick or the imprisoned.
...An indulgence is remission of punishment for sins forgiven in
confession, the Catholic Church teaches. People who do not go
straight to heaven or hell after death must spend time in
"purgatory," according to Catholic doctrine. The sale of
indulgences was one of the practices that resulted in Martin

errors should be acknowledged, but urged a "purification of

Cambodia is facing a food crisis. Two years of floods and drought
have destroyed rice crops, forcing families to scavenge for food,
World Relief said. In Santouk district in Kompong Thom province,
about 5,000 people in 40 villages need emergency help to get
through the next month. About 70 people in one church have been
eating poisonous plants that lose their toxicity after being
boiled, the organization said. World Relief is encouraging
families to raise fish in ponds in exchange for rice, cooking
oil, farming implements, and seeds. The organization is working
with the Adventist Development and Relief Agency to distribute 40
tons of food donated by the World Food Program.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews besieged a Messianic Jewish congregation in
Israel. Several hundred haredim reportedly surrounded a meeting
hall used by Jewish believers in Jesus in Be'er Sheva Nov. 28.
About 30 worshipers were trapped in the building for four hours,
the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem said. The mob
shouted threats and curses, threw stones, and spit at Messianic
believers who came outside, the agency said. Some in the crowd
told police officers that the children in the congregation should
be handed over to them for safekeeping, one witness said. Israeli
police were unable to disperse the crowd but did prevent them
from storming the building. Police escorted the believers past
the mob.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Since January 1, the American
Red Cross has responded to 239 major disasters affecting 300,000
families in 41 states, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands
and committed more than $160 million for immediate disaster relief.
The Red Cross continues racing aid to Honduras and Nicaragua in the
wake of Hurricane Mitch. 1998 has become the costliest year for the
Red Cross and one of the most devastating years for disasters in
recent history.

So far just this year, the Red Cross has served 3.2 million meals and
provided comfort, care and solace to almost 200,000 people left
homeless because of disasters. Red Cross' trained, licensed mental
health professionals have provided more than 75,000 crisis counseling
sessions to victims, emergency personnel and relief workers in 1998.

"This has been an extremely difficult year for disasters," said John
Clizbe, vice president for disaster services of the American Red
Cross. "The Red Cross has been in the worst hit areas and will
continue to be there, providing help and hope to those individuals
and families affected."

Hurricane Georges is one of the most destructive hurricanes in
recorded history and the costliest single disaster operation in Red
Cross history. The disaster stretched Red Cross resources thin,
requiring a $50 million fund-raising appeal from Red Cross President
Elizabeth Dole several weeks ago.

Trained, compassionate Red Cross disaster workers have been sent to
more than 16,000 relief assignments, totaling almost 500,000 days
spent providing humanitarian relief since winter storms crippled
parts of New York, Maine and Vermont in January.

As the year continued, so did the disasters. In February, massive
flooding hit in California and horrific tornadoes killed 42 people in
Florida. In March, tornadoes ripped through southern Minnesota and
floods swamped the towns of Elba, Ala., and Albany, Ga. In April,
another strand of deadly tornadoes harassed the south in Tennessee,
Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky and Arkansas. In May, more tornadoes tore
through North Carolina, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, New York,
Minnesota and Wisconsin.

In June, wildfires scorched almost a half a million acres in Florida
and flooding in Iowa and Ohio devastated dozens of communities.
Floods scoured parts of Tennessee and an evacuation of Times Square
displaced hundreds of people in July. In late summer, Hurricane
Bonnie threated a dozen states before causing flooding in coastal
North Carolina and Virginia, and Tropical Storm Charley pummeled Del
Rio and Laredo, Texas. In September, severe wind storms sacked
central New York and Tropical Storm Frances produced extensive
flooding in Louisiana and east Texas.

Those disasters were just a prelude, however, to the devastation and
destruction caused by Hurricane Georges. The hurricane lumbered
through the Caribbean before razing entire regions of Puerto Rico and
striking the Florida Keys, the Panhandle and other Gulf Coast states.
 The disaster affected more than 189,000 families, some 50,000 more
than Hurricane Andrew affected in 1992. In October, flooding from
the Guadalupe and Colorado rivers engulfed 30,000 square miles in
Texas affecting more than 10,000 families, and Oklahoma set a new
record for the most tornadoes in a single day. This month, 11
counties in Kansas have experienced flooding. In Central America, the
American Red Cross is now embarked on one of the largest
international relief operations in its history and has launched a $6
million effort to supply basic medications, rice, beans, water
purification chemicals and hygiene kits for victims of Hurricane
Mitch.

The American Red Cross responds to the needs of families and
individuals traumatized by disasters on average by more than 165
disasters a day. Each year the Red Cross responds to more than
60,000 disasters from house fires to hurricanes. Other disasters may
include floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous material spills,
transportation accidents, explosions and other natural and man-made
disasters.

The Red Cross responds immediately to disasters regardless of cost.
When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter,
food and physical and mental health services to address basic human
needs. In addition to these services, the core of Red Cross disaster
relief is the assistance given to families and individuals affected
by a disaster. The Red Cross can provide the means to pay for items
needed most like groceries, new clothing, rent, emergency home
repairs, essential household items, medicines and occupational tools.
 The Red Cross also feeds families, individuals and emergency
workers, handles inquiries from concerned family members, provides
blood and blood products to disaster victims and provides comfort,
care and solace to the community involved.

     Moscow's ITAR-TASS World Service today reported that Russia will
continue "assisting the Palestine Liberation Organization in training
its national personnel, thus allocating 100 scholarships annually to
train Palestinians in [Russia's] national higher educational
establishments". This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister Vasiliy
Sredin when delivering a speech in the US capital on Monday [30th
November] at the international conference to support the Middle East
peace process and development. Representatives of the governments of
45 countries and major international organizations, including the IMF
and the World bank, attended the conference.

"Appealing to the participants in the forum, the head of the Russian
delegation also said that at present "a study is being made regarding
of additional grant of machinery and equipment" to the Palestinians
by the Russian Federation. In addition, Russia "intends to develop
business exchanges and cooperation on the basis of the Agreement on
Trade and Economic Cooperation which was signed during the visit to
Moscow by [the president of the Palestinian National Authority] Yasir
'Arafat this October.

Christmas is returning to Cuba. The Communist Party has
recommended that Dec. 25 be reinstated as a national holiday, the
Washington Post said. It banned the holiday in 1969, claiming
that Cuba's enemies had manipulated religious believers and that
the day off interfered with the sugar harvest. Party leader Fidel
Castro is expected to accept the recommendation next week.
...The party announced its position Dec. 1 on the front page of
its official newspaper, Granma. It said it wants to establish a
stronger relationship with the Vatican, citing issues including
Third World debt, poverty, and social inequality. It hopes to
participate in "the broad possibilities of cooperation that are
opening up to all people of good faith, regardless of any
political, ideological, or religious differences, to work
together for the good of humanity," a statement said.

Church, some say. "The government is listening to the Church,"
Rolando Suarez of Cuban Catholic Relief Services said. Cuba's
Catholic bishops issued a statement proclaiming that the move
recognizes Cuba's Christian heritage and "reaffirms our authentic
traditions." The Church has been granted greater freedoms since
Pope John Paul II visited in January, including the use of state
radio and TV channels for religious broadcasts and permission to
hold open-air Masses.

Thu Dec 3 , 1998 -- The 53rd General Assembly on Wednesday adopted six
resolutions on the question of Palestine and two on the situation in
Middle East, calling for self-determination for the Palestinian people
and demanding that Israel withdraws from Syria's Golan Heights
captured in 1967. The resolutions over the two issues which are the
topic of annual debates at the General Assembly, were again endorsed
by an overwhelming majority. The United States joined Israel by
casting the only negative votes against five of the resolutions, while
abstaining on the one about Jerusalem. A resolution on the peaceful
settlement of the question of Palestine was adopted: for "fulfilling
the rights of the Palestinian people, primarily the right to
self-determination," and "the withdrawal of Israel from the
Palestinian territory occupied since 1967." The resolution also
"stresses the need for commitment to the principle of land for peace.
The resolution urged U.N. members to expedite economic and technical
assistance to the Palestinian people and emphasized the importance for
the United Nations' having a more active and expanded role in the
peace process. Another resolution adopted considers as illegal, null
and void a 1948 decision by Israel to impose its laws and jurisdiction
on all parts of Jerusalem, including the eastern part captured in
1967. Israel voted against the resolution. The resolution deplored the
transfer by some countries of their diplomatic missions to Jerusalem,
which Israel regards as its undivided capital. Another adopted
resolution called upon Israel to resume peace talks on the Syrian and
Lebanese tracks and to respect undertakings reached in previous
rounds.

Again and again Jesus warns us of those who'll come in His name and
attempt to deceive us (Mt.7:15-16; 24:5,11), because they themselves are
deceived (2 Tim.3:13). He tells us of the *utter worthlessness*of all
flesh and blood knowledge (i.e. psychology, philosophy, etc.) used in
any and all vain attempts to serve, know or live for the Holy God
(Mt.16:17; Jn.6:63; Col.2:8).
He tells us in absolute terms that if we aren't prepared to forsake all
to follow Him/die with Him, then don't bother to come after Him at all
(Lk,18:24-30). We're better off being stone-cold towards Him, despise
Him, turn our backs on Him completely, walk away and go play
tiddly-winks for a living.
The judgement is going to go easier on those of Sodom and Gomorrah than
on those who profess to be His but refuse to obey Him and come to Him
for life!

The pollution and yeast of false doctrine, and the icing of todays
*partial* Gospel on top of it, has risen and is being received world
wide. Never before in the last 2,000 years has there been even a
fraction of the damnable heresies that we're seeing in the (pseudo)
church (but never in His remnant church!) today, that is passing for
Christianity. The end times are clearly here (1 Tim.4:1-2; 2 Tim.3:1-5;
4:3-4), and we're prepared.
Nevertheless, the utter lack of discernment and wisdom we're seeing
today in pastors and teachers (once pillars of the church); in denials
of and compromising of the faith by striving
for peace and unity with long-time, clearly marked enemies of Christ and
the gospel, in combination with the steady push of self-centered
teachings, is just, "amazing"!

Every effort is underway by todays "apostate" teachers not to
Scripturally confront those in gross error with words of, 'Repent,
Repent'; but to build bridges with words of, 'Peace, Peace'. "The flesh,
the world and Satan are all fast at work putting one last touch on the
counterfeit church. By nature she is a spiritual whore, via todays false
gospel. Those in her mentally accept Jesus as Savior, yet >never< come
and surrender all to Him as their Lord. Such a 'gospel' let's them
continue to believe and do that which is evil and worthless in God's
sight.
