SIX REDEMPTIONS: An unusual "Redeeming of the First-
Born" ceremony [Numbers 18.15-16] was held on Monday in
Ashdod. Although customarily it is the father who redeems his
one-month old first-born son from a Cohen (priest), this
ceremony featured six adults, recent new immigrants from
Russia, who redeemed themselves together at a moving
ceremony. One of those 'redeemed,' Shimon Ben-Dor, said,
"Unfortunately, we did not undergo this process while young,
but after we heard from our rabbi the importance of this
Biblical commandment, we requested to be able to fulfill it."
The Cohen who accepted the redemption money -- five pure
silver coins -- was Rabbi Yitzchak Cohen, who is accepted as
one who traces his ancestral roots back to Eli the Priest,
mentor of Samuel the Prophet. The event, including the
customary festive meal for the tens of relatives and other
participants, was sponsored by an anonymous donor from
Ashdod. (ARUTZ SHEVA)

'ALIYA DAY': Tuesday was 'Aliya Day' in Israel as almost
1,000 new immigrants arrived at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.
"I've come to fulfill the dream of the Jewish people, to raise my
children in the land of Israel," said David Wapner, of Hillcrest, New
York, as he, his wife Zahava, and their five children waited to be
processed in the Absorption Ministry reception hall. Two planes
arrived, one bringing British and American immigrants, the other
newcomers from Uzbekistan. Haim Chesler, chairman of the Jewish
Agency's aliya committee, said: "It's very symbolic that today, the
two airplanes came simultaneously, because for us Israelis, aliya from
the West is as important as from the former Soviet Union." Others
greeting the newcomers were Absorption Minister Yuli Edelstein, MKs
Yuri Stern (Yisrael Ba'aliya) and Sofa Landver (Labor), and dozens of
volunteers and young people from immigrant support groups throughout
the country. Their presence and enthusiasm only gave encouragement to
newcomers like Sam and Shuli Kamin from Cincinnati, Ohio, and their
four children. Shuli said she had no qualms about giving up a
comfortable lifestyle for the uncertainty of Israel, where they still
don't have jobs or a permanent home. "We sold everything and just came
as Avraham Avinu did - Lech lecha," she said. "We didn't come because
we want the country to provide for us; we did it because we want to do
it, we think it's the right thing to do, and with G-d's help, it'll
work out." The number of people immigrating to Israel is higher this
year than in previous years. (JERUSALEM POST)

VATICAN AGAINST JERUSALEM PLAN: A decision by Israel
to broaden Jerusalem's jurisdiction "is causing great disquiet," the
Vatican said this week, a sign of escalating tensions between PM
Netanyahu's government and the Vatican. The single-page "Non-Paper on
Jerusalem" was published Thursday by the Vatican's observer mission to
the United Nations, and expressed its support for a decision last
month by the Security Council to criticize Israel for plans to expand
its jurisdiction.

Scorpions are major cause of death in Iran province

TEHRAN (August 8, 1998 12:01 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) -
Scorpions are the fourth major cause of death in Iran's southern
province of Khuzestan, a daily newspaper reported on Saturday.

Quoting a report by state veterinary researchers, Qods said that after
respiratory, infectious and digestive diseases, scorpions cause the
greatest number of deaths in this humid, oil-rich province.

The report did not give any figures on those killed, but said some
25,000 people were treated for scorpion stings in Khuzestan every
year, adding that some 60 different varieties of the deadly insect
could be found in Iran.

"Population growth and urban development have brought the residents in
closer contact with scorpions," the report added.

Paper Says 'Holy Jihad' Only Solution for Iraq
              Baghdad al-'Iraq in Arabic 1 Aug 98 p 8
Article by Munir 'Abd-al-Karim: "Jihad Is the Solution"

In order for our country not to remain a fertile ground for the
Special Commission's spies; in order to stop the destruction of the
Iraqi capabilities, on the pretext of implementing the international
resolutions, in a systematic manner worked out by the hostile US,
Zionist, and British intelligence circles; in order not to continue
the killing of Iraqi children in cold blood, harm the sustenance and
the daily living of the great Iraqi people, and persist in doing so
under the sight and hearing of spectators; in order not to continue
this unjust persistence in wrongdoing; in order for us not to continue
to shed our blood and waste our money; and in order for our resources
not to continue to be exhausted in a dirty game, which the United
States wanted in the way that began eight years ago and that has not
thus far ended; we pose a decisive question to ourselves: Are we
right or wrong? A decisive answer is: We are right and our enemy is
wrong. God willing, we are the believers and our enemy is the infidel.
Hence, we only have one solution that will bring us one of two good
things--namely, either victory or martyrdom. Despite all the Iraqi
cooperation, flexibility, and unimaginable sacrifices, the enemy will
not be content, and it will continue to plan for perpetuating the
blockade. In view of this policy, the results will not be better than
the results of a confrontation. We are the grandsons of al-Husayn [a
relative of Prophet Muhammad], so we do not accept humiliation. If
death is the fate of people, then we will only choose the kind of
death that satisfies God, honors history, and teases the enemies.
Jihad is the solution. Let the hypocritical thieves who did their
best and spent their money to kill the Iraqi people--namely, the
al-Sabah family [in Kuwait]--be the first ones to pay the price. They
are the masterminds of sedition and the source of all evils against
the nation. Anyone saying that Iraq did not implement the
"international resolutions" is a liar. Iraq implemented these
resolutions despite the fact that they are unjust and arbitrary. Iraq
also endured the tricks of the Special Commission throughout eight
years. However, the Security Council stood idly by. Even the
Memorandum of Understanding was designed to make Iraq pay the expenses
and costs of the inspection teams and silence the voices calling for
lifting the blockade imposed on Iraq, based on the fact that Iraq
receives food and medicine. Even this issue did not escape from
intransigence, procrastination, disapproval, and the moodiness of the
Sanctions Committee. Do we have to yield to the enemy's will and
surrender? No, because this is rejected by God, his prophet, and the
Iraqi believers who honored history with their positions, glories, and
heroic deeds. Diplomacy or the so-called "rationalism," which the
Arabs, including the Iraqis, were urged to show, were only a mere
deception and devilish tricks designed to peddle the dirtiest
conspiracies with the aim of eliminating the nation and crushing it
completely. If the Security Council's remarks about "threatening the
neighbors" were true, then why did not this council do anything
against the Zionist entity, which is occupying a homeland, rendering a
people homeless, occupying the lands of three Arab countries, and not
complying with the UN resolutions? If the matter involves "border
problems" with a neighboring "state," then what did the Security
Council do against Turkey, which declared the northern part of Cyprus
a Turkish province and interfered in northern Iraq tens of times by
launching a military invasion under the sight and hearing of the
Security Council?! Have the border problems ended in the world, so the
hypocrites are now violently agitated by Iraq? Saudi Arabia has
border problems with certain Gulf countries and with Yemen. Likewise,
the United Arab Emirates has border problems with Iran. Egypt also has
border problems with Sudan, and Morocco has border problems with
Mauritania. Therefore, this is only a pretext for a crude aggression
and interference, as well as a plan to kill an entire people. In
brief, we are a people who do not fear anything, do not surrender, and
do not relinquish their rights at all. This people have the right to
live just as other peoples live on earth, and this is not a favor by
anyone or a handout from anyone. Furthermore, we are a rich country
that has the right to make its people enjoy its resources, build it,
and develop it just as other peoples do. If the matter involves
possessing or manufacturing "weapons of mass destruction," knowing
that Iraq no longer possesses or manufactures these weapons, they are
now an ordinary thing in the Third World states, so they are no longer
monopolized by the big powers. Within a period of one week in May,
India and Pakistan announced that they possess nuclear arms and they
also conducted nuclear tests!! It is thus an evil intention by those
who chose hostility and unjustified grudge against Iraq. Iraq
fulfilled all its obligations, even more so, throughout the hard past
years. We only have one solution, which we believe is the way for
salvation and that is the holy jihad. It is the enduring believers
who will eventually win.

Jihad rally on Brooklyn College campus spreads message of hate

Terrorism expert uncovers militant Islamic 'Lecture Circuit' in the United States in Summer 1998 issue of The Journal of Counterterrorism

The following was issued by the International Association of Counterterrorism & Security Professionals:

"No to the Jews, descendents of the apes, we vow to return, despite the obstacles." These words of hatred were sung by militant Egyptian cleric, Wagdi Ghuniem, as he led a crowd of at least 500 people in song at an Islamic rally sponsored by a dozen American Muslim groups on May 24, 1998 at Brooklyn College. Before leading the audience in anti-Jewish verse, he said: "The Jews distort words from their meanings ... they killed the prophets and worshipped idols ... Allah says he who equips a warrior of Jihad is like the one who makes Jihad himself." Investigative reporter and terrorism expert Steven Emerson unveils the hate-filled Brooklyn College rally in the upcoming Summer 1998 issue of The Journal of Counterterrorism & Security International, available August 15. Mr. Emerson's article, "Islamic Militants on the Lecture Circuit in the United States," reveals that the Brooklyn event is not unique and that radicals from the Middle East routinely speak at events sponsored by US-based organizations....

Mr. Emerson reports that every year, according to law enforcement officials and information obtained at Islamic conferences, dozens of militant Islamic clerics -- officials, representatives and leaders of various terrorist groups -- come to the United States. They represent such groups as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, al-Gama'at Islamiyya, the Sudanese National Islamic Front, Jordan's Islamic Action Front and Hizbollah. Despite advanced computer systems employed by the INS, Islamists continue to encounter little or no difficulty in entering the United States. The May 24 Brooklyn event was just one stop on a militant Islamic "lecture circuit" that brings hate-speech to cities across the nation.

Islamic Group Spells Out Its Demands

CAIRO (AFP, Aug. 10, 1998)-- The shadowy Islamic group which has
claimed responsibility for bomb attacks on the US embassies in Nairobi
and Dar es Salaam, has issued a list of demands calling for US forces
to leave Saudi Arabia and for the release of detained Islamic
militants.
In communiques sent to Radio France International, copies of which
were obtained by AFP's Cairo bureau, the Islamic Army for the
Liberation of (Moslem) Holy Sites said it wanted:
"1. The withdrawal of US and Western forces from Moslem countries
in general and from the Arabian peninsula in particular, including
civilians.
"2. The lifting of the naval blockade imposed round the Arabian
peninsula and the withdrawal of warships from Islamic waters.
"3. The release of ulemas (religious scholars) and young Moslems
detained in the United States, Israel and in Saudi Arabia, and first
and foremost Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman (the spiritual guide of the
Egyptian fundamentalist organisation Jamaa Islamiya who is jailed in
the United States) and Sheikh Salmana al-Wada (a Saudi dissident).
"4. A halt to the expropriation of Moslem riches, in particular
the oil wealth of the Arabian peninsula and of Moslem countries.
"5. An end to all forms of US support to Israel.
"6. An end to the war of eradication being waged by the United
States with the aid of governments in its pay, against young Moslems
under the pretext of fighting terrorism.
"7. An end to the campaigns of extermination conducted by the
United States against certain Moslem nations in the guise of economic
sanctions."
The hitherto unknown group justified its "jihad" against
Washington by the "occupation of the holy places in the Arabian peninsula where
US forces are close to the Al-Aqasa mosque." The group said it had
taken inspiration from "fatwas from contemporary Moslem theologians
including Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman... and statements by Sheikh Ossama
bin Laden", a Saudi-born millionaire who now lives in exile in
Afghanistan.
Bin Laden, who is a self-avowed enemy of the United States, has
been named as a likely suspect behind Friday's bomb attacks which have
left at least 174 dead and more than 4,000 injured. The communiques
said the Nairobi bomb attack which killed at least 164 people, was
carried out by "two men from Mecca" and that the one in Dar es Salaam which
left another ten dead, was the work of "a man from Egypt who belongs
to the Abdallah Azzam batallion".
(Abdallah Azzam was a Palestinian killed during the war in
Afghanistan against Soviet troops and is venerated as the "father" of
the fundamentalist "Afghan Arabs".)

From: <owner-bpr@philologos.org>

After reading a commentary (whose conclusions I came to
disagree with and therefore won't go into), I became interested
in the two words "church" (Gr. ekklesia) and "synagogue" (Gr.
sunagoge) and how they are used in the NT. For example, the
letters in Revelation were to the CHURCHES, but twice in the
book (Rev 2:9, 3:9) the word SYNAGOGUE is used and both
times in association with Satan and blasphemous Jews.

I believe God is very particular about the words His uses in the
Bible. An author of a book or article will often consult a
thesaurus to help him choose just the write word to convey his
thoughts. Sometimes an author will choose a word not
because it expresses his meaning more, but more so because
it sounds impressive. (Ever read a book where you have to
look up ever other word? Ever think that perhaps the author
was trying to show off his intellect or trying to show you that
you had none?) Well, God doesn't use words to "show-off" or
to confuse His readers. He didn't have to consult a thesaurus
to find just the right word -- He *is* a thesaurus. He *is* the
Word.

I think this is why I enjoy word studies so much. Every time we
realize that a particular word is there not by accident, but by
design, it can give you a whole new appreciation of the
scriptures or interpretation thereof.

The Church of God and The Synagogue of Satan

(Rev 2:8 KJV) "And unto the angel of the CHURCH in Smyrna
write...

(Rev 2:9 KJV) "I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty,
(but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say
they are Jews, and are not, but are the SYNAGOGUE of
Satan."

CHURCH

1577. ekklesia, ek-klay-see'-ah; from a comp. of G1537 and a
der. of G2564; a calling out, i.e. (concr.) a popular meeting,
espec. a religious congregation (Jewish synagogue, or Chr.
community of members on earth or saints in heaven or both):--
assembly, church.

Derived from:

1537. ek, ek; a prim. prep. denoting origin (the point whence
motion or action proceeds), from, out (of place, time or cause;
lit. or fig.; direct or remote).

"When used of persons, it refers to the place, stock, family,
condition, etc., out of which one is derived or to which one
belongs." [1]

2564. kaleo, kal-eh'-o; to "call" (prop. aloud, but used in a
variety of applications, dir. or otherwise).

"To call anyone, to invite, to name, a calling." [2]

"Ekklesia: originally seems to have been derived from ekkaleo,
to call out. It was a common term for a congregation of the
ekkletoi, those called out or assembled in the public affairs of a
free state, the body of free citizens, called together by a herald
(kerux, 2783). [3] The ekkletoi, the called people, constituted
the ekklesia...

"The Christian community was designated for the first time as
ekklesia to differentiate it from the the Jewish community,
sunagoge (Acts 2:47). The term ekklesia denotes the NT
community of the redeemed in its twofold aspect. All who were
called by and to Christ in the fellowship of His salvation, the
Church worldwide of all times, and only secondarily to an
individual church [Mt. 16:18; Acts 2:44,47; Gal. 1:13, etc.]..."
[4]

NEW TESTAMENT USAGE

"The use of the Greek term prior to the emergence of the
Christian church is important as two streams of meaning flow
from the history of its usage into the New Testament
understanding of church. First, the Greek term which basically
means 'called out' was commonly used to indicate an assembly
of citizens of a Greek city and is so used in Acts 19:32, 39.
The citizens who were quite conscious of their privileged
status over against slaves and noncitizens were called to the
assembly by a herald and dealt in their meetings democratically
with matters of common concern. When the early Christians
understood themselves as constituting a church, no doubt
exists that they perceived themselves as called out by God in
Jesus Christ for a special purpose and that their status was a
privileged one in Jesus Christ. (Eph. 2:19)." [5]

"In the NT the church comprehends the whole number of
regenerated persons specifically from Pentecost to the first
resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:52; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17)
united organically to one another and to Christ by the baptizing
work of the Holy Spirit (Romans 6:3-4; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13;
Galatians 3:27; Ephesians 4:5; Colossians 2:10-12).

"According to the NT definition the church is the mystical Body
of Christ of which He is the head (Ephesians 1:22-23), being a
holy temple for the habitation of God through the Spirit
(Ephesians 2:21-22), 'one flesh' with Christ (Ephesians 5:30-
31), and espoused to Him as a pure virgin to one husband (2
Corinthians 11:2-4). The word ekklesia however, is employed
of any assembly, and the word in the Gk. language imples no
more; for example, the town meeting or 'assembly' at Ephesus
(Acts 19:39), and Israel called out of Egypt and spoken of as a
'congregation,' in the wilderness (Acts 7:38), but in no sense
was it a NT church except as a type of that which was to
come.

"In addition to the church as the Body of Christ, we find other
meanings attached to the word in the NT. It refers sometimes
to the company of believers in a single province or city (cf.
Revelation 2-3), or those meeting in a particular place of
worship. It is applied even to bodies of professed believers
who have largely departed from the true faith and practice,
though in such cases the title is no longer appropriate except
as a reminder of what they once were or professed to be, or
only as a convenient designation, the significance of which in
such cases is wholly lost." [6]

"The New Testament reveals a development of the word
ekklesia from the simple nontechnical meaning of 'assembly' to
the full-blown technical and theological designation for 'the
people of God.' Of its 114 occurrences in the New Testament,
with but five exceptions (Acts 7:38; 19:32, 39, 41; Heb. 2:12),
the ekklesia church is presented in this light." [7]

================

SYNAGOGUE

4864. sunagoge, soon-ag-o-gay'; from (the redupl. form of)
G4863; an assemblage of persons; spec. a Jewish
"synagogue" (the meeting or the place); by anal. a Christian
church:--assembly, congregation, synagogue.

"Sunagoge; from sunago,(4863) to lead together, assemble. A
gathering, congregation, synagogue. The congregation of
Israel was designated by the term sunagoge or ekklesia,
church. As the word was used, it did not imply the natural unity
of the people, but a community established in a special way
and for a special object. In the NT where ekklesia, church, is
adopted as the name for God's Church, i.e. the congregation
of the saved, sunagoge is used to designate the fellowship
only in Rev. 2:9; 3:9, where the unbelieving Jews as a body
are called the 'synagogue of Satan.' Jn. 8:44 calls them the
'children of Satan.' See also Acts 14:1; 17:1; 18:7. The
synagogue of Satan is set as opp. to the church of God..." [8]

ORIGIN AND USE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

"Some Jewish traditions say that the synagogue was begun by
Moses, but the Old Testament does not support this claim.
Local worship was discouraged during most of the Old
Testament because it often was associated with pagan
practices. Worship centered around the Temple in Jerusalem.
Psalm 74:8, written late in Old Testament times, seems to refer
to local places of worship destroyed when the Temple was
destroyed. Some English translations use the word synagogues
for these local places of worship, but we know nothing else
about them.

"The synagogue, as we find it in the New Testament, had its
roots in the time after Solomon's Temple was destroyed and
many of the people were carried into Exile. Local worship and
instruction became necessary. Even after many of the Jews
returned to Jerusalem and rebuilt the Temple, places of local
worship continued. By the time of Jesus these places and
assemblies were called synagogues...

"Synagogues existed not only among the many Jews who lived
outside Palestine but also among those who lived in Palestine.
While the Temple stood until A.D. 70, it continued to be the
center for sacrificial worship. Faithful Jews continued to go to
the Temple for the appointed feasts. They also participated in
their local synagogues. During Jesus' time, there was even a
synagogue within the Temple itself. This was probably the part
of the Temple where the twelve-year-old Jesus was talking
with the teachers (Luke 2:46)...

"The early part of the Book of Acts seems to reflect a period
when some Jewish believers continued to worship in the
synagogues. Saul went into the synagogues to find and
persecute believers in Christ (Acts 9:2; 22:19; 26:11). This
shows that Christian Jews were still in some synagogues,
especially those outside Palestine. As persecution developed,
the believers were forced out of the synagogues..." [9]

To the Rabbis of the Jewish people in every place
re: Danger to Life

Peace and Blessings.

We send you this special message to inform you that the local Arabs
surrounding us have for months been performing military training
exercises with live fire and cannons, preparing for their attack on
us, the Jewish communities. The situation is unbearable, and we are
pleading with you to relate to our situation.

This activity is separate from the war preparations being conducted by
the "Palestinian Police." We are discussing here the local Arabs
training with the tens of thousands of automatic weapons which they
have acquired since the forming of the Autonomy. We hear the shooting
here in Nachliel, and it is also heard in Neve Tzuf, Ateret, and in
Nili, Talmon and in Dolev. The shooting is also heard in the Shechem
area - in Yitzhar, Alon Moreh, and Itamar (where there was a shooting
attack on a Jewish family this past Friday). Not only in the Shomron
- I also have reports from Anash who live in the Judea area - Hevron,
Kiryat Arba, and the area. I almost could not find an area in the
whole Yehuda-Shomron where this phenomena has not been observed to be
snowballing in a frightening way in the past months.

We see this taking place outside our windows, and hear it day and
night in our homes. At times we hear ourselves surrounded on three
sides by cannon and automatic weapons fire, and we see - even without
aid of binoculars - how the Arabs are practicing with their machine
guns, running and shooting, running and shooting, training carefully
and well. All of the Jewish residents here are under great stress and
anxiety because of this state of affairs, and we constantly report to
Tzahal how we see with our own eyes that the Arabs are preparing
literally day and night to overrun and o"=EC slaughter the Jewish
communities here. The cruel and cynical answer of the army is that
there is nothing to worry about, for the shooting that we hear is only
Arab wedding celebrations. This is the outcome of Tzahal's do-
nothing policy which seeks to keep the Jews as subdued as possible,
even as the Arabs continue to plan and practice our slaughter.

I learned recently from the Area Brigade Commander Col. "Y." that
according to the most current army information, there is "high
probability" that the Arabs plan in the next confrontation with Israel
to conduct an all-inclusive assault, such that if the Palestinian
Police and local armed population attack in Israel's interior, Syria
and Egypt will threaten and even attack our borders . In such a
scenario, the

Yishuvim will have to fend for themselves as the regular army rushes
to the front lines. We will only be able to expect reinforcements
later. Drawing on our experience from the Sukkos riots two years ago,
the army is incapable of protecting all the Yishuvim simultaneously.

Our equipment is sorely inadequate compared to the vast weapons stores
found in every single Arab village. Any attempt to reply adequately
to the heavy volume of Arab fire will be out of the question. The
situation is similar in all the yishuvim. We beg you to raise a
bitter and desperate outcry which will be heard over all the radios
and read in all the newspapers - that Israel must take the situation
into hand immediately, for the danger to life is very great now. Has
the time not come to awaken Israel to the situation?

Dear Rabbis! If you don't believe us, we invite you send an emissary
to come and spend two days here with us. He will see and hear
everything. Let one of the Rabbis come and see for himself our grave
situation. May the self sacrifice of our fathers, sages, and holy men
provide you strength to make decisions to take immediate action to
save Jewish lives.

Thank you,

*** Iraq says sanctions have killed 1.4 mln people

Nearly 1.4 million Iraqis have died as a result of 8-year-old United
Nations trade sanctions because of shortages of food and medicine,
Health Minister Umeed Madhat Mubarak was quoted as saying Monday.
Mubarak told the ruling Baath Party newspaper al-Thawra that more than
a million Iraqi children had died as a result of the punitive
sanctions imposed for Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait. He said an
average of 6,452 children under the age of five were now dying each
month, compared to 539 a month before the Gulf crisis.

Saddam to blame for suffering of Iraqis - Britain

LONDON, Feb 14 (Reuters) - British Defence Secretary George Robertson
said on Saturday President Saddam Hussein was responsible for the
suffering of ordinary Iraqis and not international sanctions.

Robertson wrote in an article in the Mirror newspaper that he had no
doubt Saddam was still making the most destructive of weapons.

``My heart goes out to the Iraqi people. And I condemn Saddam's
cynical attempt to portray them as the victims of sanctions imposed by
the wicked West,'' he said.

``The truth is people are dying in Iraq because it suits Saddam to
exploit their suffering. He believes this will weaken the will of the
United Nations to seek out and destroy his most dangerous weapons.''

Robertson said Britain co-sponsored the U.N. food-for-oil deal with
Iraq but ``for propaganda reasons, Saddam dragged his feet for more
than a year before taking up that offer.''

``The U.N. has recommended the amount of oil Iraq can sell is doubled.
I support this and hope the Iraqi people will reap the rewards,''
Robertson said.

``Saddam, not sanctions, is responsible for suffering in Iraq. I
invite those who need convincing to remember he has built 45 palaces
since the Gulf War.

``The 625 million pounds ($1 billion) cost of those could buy many
modern hospitals. Saddam provoked the current crisis by making these
sites off-limits to U.N. weapons inspectors in defiance of Security
Council resolutions.''

Robertson questioned what Saddam had to hide and said the suspicion
must be that he was hiding chemical weapons.

``The U.N. has discovered and made harmless 690 tonnes of chemical
agents and destroyed no less than 38,000 weapons. The Iraqis lied,
cheated and attempted to conceal their arsenal,'' Robertson said.

He added: ``I have no doubt that Saddam is still making the most
destructive of weapons.''

At the United Nations on Friday, officials said the world body was
sending a team to survey eight sites which Iraq has said were
off-limits to U.N. arms inspectors.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan was considering a trip to Baghdad,
the officials added.

The extent of the so-called Iraqi presidential compounds, and what
they encompass, are a matter of controversy in the crisis threatening
to explode with a U.S. military strike on Iraq.

The team, due to arrive in Iraq on Sunday, includes two Austrian
surveyors and will be led by Staffan de Mistura of Sweden, director of
the U.N. information centre in Rome and a former U.N. humanitarian
coordinator for Iraq.

Annan, who has expressed a readiness to fly to Baghdad himself, held a
second meeting on Friday with the five permanent members of the
Security Council -- the United States, Russia, Britain, China and
France -- and scheduled a third meeting for Monday.

Iraq, as well as Russia and some other council members, are pressing
him to visit Baghdad to try to resolve the crisis over arms
inspections peacefully and head off military action by the United
States and Britain, which have massed warplanes and ships in the Gulf.

We will begin studying Daniel Ch. 9 anytime now. If anyone has
anything they still want to send to the list concerning the Letter to
the Church at Smyrna, please feel free to do so.

As always, these are private individual studies. There is nothing
structured or formatted about them. It's just a way for the list to
keep focused on a particular bible topic. Any new list member
needing clarification about these studies should send me email.

Jesus left out of Church's millennial prayer???

Weekend News Today Source:
Sunday Times (London)/
Weekly Digest of Prophetic Developments

Sun Aug 9 , 1998 -- Britain's church leaders have astonished many
prominent Christians by producing a prayer to mark the millennium
which omits any reference to God or Jesus Christ. The prayer, known as
the Millennium Resolution, is at the heart of the main Christian
activity on New Year's Eve, 1999. It has been drawn up by the
Millennium Group of Churches Together in England, a body which
represents all the main Christian denominations. The group, chaired by
Baroness Richardson, the recently ennobled Methodist minister, is
planning to distribute the prayer with a candle to every household in
the country. George Carey, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Basil Hume,
Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, are both presidents of the group.
It is thought they will be severely embarrassed by the production of
the resolution, which is expected to be adopted by equivalent bodies
in Wales and Scotland. John Broadhurst, the Bishop of Fulham, said he
was appalled at the plan. "It is extraordinary in the face of worldly
pressure that Christian leaders should secularise their unique
contribution to the millennium event."

Porn stars are human rights heroes,
American Civil Liberties Union
President Nadine Strossen said. Pornographic
filmmakers and actors are defenders of the right
to free speech, she told the World Pornography
Conference in Los Angeles. "I want to underscore
how extremely essential your efforts are. I want
to thank and applaud you for your fight and
contribution for First Amendment freedom...."
"When we defend sexual expression, we really
are making a stand not only against a specific
kind of censorship...but human rights in
general," Strossen said. She passionately defends
pornography because "so many other people keep
attacking it, especially here in the United

conference, hosted by the Center for Sex Research
at California State University, featured
discussion topics including, "A Short History of

'Arafat: Committee Decisions 'Insufficient', State to be Declared
 May 4
Cairo MENA in Arabic 1020 GMT 1 Aug 98
Algiers, 1 Aug (MENA)--Palestinian President Yasir 'Arafat has
stressed that there is need for an emergency Arab summit and an
Islamic summit to save Jerusalem and support the steadfastness of the
Palestinian people. He said the resolutions of the Jerusalem
Committee, although insufficient, sound the alarm and arouse fears
that Jerusalem may be lost.
He warned against a new outbreak of the intifadah to prevent
aggression on the Arabism of Jerusalem, which is the capital of the
independent Palestinian state and the essence of the peace process.
Without Jerusalem, he said, there will be no peace in the Middle East.
In a statement to the Algerian independent newspaper Sawt
     al-Ahrar
published today, Saturday, 'Arafat stressed that the Palestinian
Authority [PA] took all necessary measures to efficiently confront the
Israeli Jewish scheme. He stressed that the decision to declare a
Palestinian state on 4 May next year is final and irrevocable. The
establishment of the state on the land of Palestine is unquestionable
"whether people like it or not," he said.
'Arafat added "If Netanyahu opposes this, let him drink the Dead
Sea water; there will be no retreat from the decision or abandonment
of the legitimate rights. The Israelis have no choice but to give in
to global legitimacy and implement the Madrid and Oslo agreements."
On the recent Palestinian-Israeli meetings, 'Arafat said they
produced no tangible results but they paved the way for further
meetings that may yield better results and lead to the resumption of
the negotiations to spare the region the risks of a new war.
He disclosed that the new Palestinian government is now ready and
will be announced in the next few days. He said the government will
work to introduce radical and comprehensive changes in the PA's
structures and institutions to prepare them for the establishment of
the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. He
said efforts are being made to hold a Palestinian national accord
seminar in which all sides participate to lay down the future strategy
of the Palestinian state. [Passage omitted on Egyptian-French
initiative and his recent visit to Austria]

Vatican: Inquisition should not be roundly condemned

VATICAN CITY, Aug 10 (AFP) - Papal theologian Georges Cottier said
Monday that the 16th century Inquisition which fought Protestantism
and condemned Galileo should not be totally condemned.

Speaking on Vatican radio, he said the historical context had to be
taken into consideration before saying "that such and such an act
should not have been committed."

Cottier is behind plans for a symposium to examine the Roman, Spanish
and Middle Age Inquisitions which will take place at the Vatican from
October 28 to November 2.

The symposium, he said, would provide Pope John Paul II with enough
information to see if there is a need to apologise for the Church's
behaviour in the past.

He said the Church should apologise for sins committed in the past,
but those apologies should not be presented as if "the Church's
history had been a litany of crimes and mistakes."

In January the Vatican officially opened 4,500 archives detailing four
centuries of Roman Catholic history, including the Inquisition.

"The documents provide an image of the Inquisition that is less black,
less obscurantist and monolithic" than previously given, the director
of the archives, Monsignor Alejandro Cifres, said at the time.

The archives date back to 1542, when Pope Paul III assigned the
medieval Inquisition to the Congregation of the Inquisition or Holy
Office, which was replaced in 1965 by the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith.

Freeh Investigating Clinton

Freeh: We're Investigating Clinton/FBI Still Withholding National
Security Information From President

Human Events, The National Conservative Weekly
14 August 1998 Staff

In one of the most dramatic snippets of congressional testimony in
recent decades, FBI Director Louis Freeh told the House Government
Reform and Oversight Committee last week that his agency is actively
investigating President Clinton and Vice President Gore for possibly
committing criminal acts in the course of their 1996 re-election
campaign.

The testimony came after senior Democrats on the committee,
led by ranking minority member Henry Waxman (Calif.), filibustered the
proceedings for more than an hour in an apparent effort to push
Freeh's testimony out of the prime morning news cycle into the lunch
hour.

In what was clearly a carefully coordinated strategy with Atty.
Gen. Janet Reno, Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.) even went so far as [to]
interrupt Freeh's testimony to read aloud a lengthy letter that Reno
had sent that morning to committee Democrats_not to Chairman Dan
Burton (R-Ind.). As Freeh sat mutely at the witness table, Lantos's
recitation of Reno's written complaints consumed more than twice the
time that had been allotted each committee member to speak.

Reno's PR Gambit
During Freeh's testimony, Reno called a press conference at the
Justice Department to repeat the substance of her confrontational
letter to the committee. This was a classic tactic_pulled right out
of chapter one of the elementary textbook on public
relations_designed to deflect press attention from the significance
of what her FBI director was confirming in sworn testimony across
town.

The gambit worked. The next morning most major newspapers ran
front-page headlines portraying the committee hearing as a mere
political tit-for-tat pitting Reno against Burton.

The New York Times, for example ran its story about the hearing_by
political reporter David Rosenbaum_below the fold on the front page.
Rosenbaum's lead paragraph said, "Atty. Gen. Janet Reno anda House
investigative committee approached a showdown today over whether she
should ask for an independent counsel to prosecute campaign finance
abuses."

The Washington Post ran its story about the hearing on page
A10. The Post did not mention Freeh's remarkable testimony that he is
investigating President Clinton and Vice President Gore, until the
12th paragraph of the story. The New York Times story mentioned this
crucial point in its 19th paragraph.

Freeh, Charles LaBella, who is out-going director of the Justice
Department task force investigating the campaign finance scandal, and
James DeSarno, the lead FBI investigator on the case, made other
startling revelations that were either minimized, or not even
reported, by most major news outlets. They included:

*The FBI is continuing to withhold national security information from
President Clinton because of its importance to their criminal
investigation of his activities.

* Investigators fear that if the White House sees the memos Freeh and
LaBella have written to Reno outlining the reasons she must name an
independent counsel, President Clinton and Vice President Gore and
other "covered persons" would be tipped off to evidence and lead the
investigators are pursuing.

* Clinton political appointees in the Justice Department have been
given copies of the memos.

* Atty. Gen. Janet Reno has consulted Clinton political appointees
about what action to take regarding LaBella's July 16 memo advising
her to name an independent counsel, but she has not consulted Freeh,
LaBella or DeSarno.

* The Chinese government isstonewalling the Justice Department's
investigation of illegal campaign contributios that were funneled
into the United States from China. Unlike the entourage of 1,200
friends and advisors who accompanied the President on his June trip
to China, FBI and Justice Department investigators have been refused
visas to enter that country.

* FBI and Justice Department investigators have also been denied
access to Chinese banking records that could demonstrate the ultimate
source of illegal contributions made to the Clinton-Gore reelection
campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Unfortunately, my church is falling apart and as a result I lost my

in mind that I am new at this so feel free to point me in the right
direction if you feel I am in error. I should warn you, I am known as
"the question lady" <g> so stand by!! So, my new teachers (your mission,
should you choose to accept it <g>) my first question (s) - I have been
taught that Matthew 24 is about the 70th week of Daniel, agreed? And
scripture details characteristics (for the church) and signs (for the
Jews) , agreed? So, Matthew 24 details "signs" of the tribulation,
right?
Sorry if this is all rehashed material - I've been signed on about 3
days.
In His Service,

Hi Jan! Welcome aboard....

Well... I don't consider myself a teacher. Actually, compared to
several others on the list, I would say that I'm more of a
student. <g> This list will hopefully be a little give and take and
in the process we'll learn and grow together in the Word.

I have thought about your letter ever since I read it and was
hoping someone else would respond before I did. <g> You
see, Matt 24 is probably one of the most debated areas of the
bible. There are so many different interpretations. There is of
course God's intended meaning in the verses for which we strive,
but man seems to have muddied the waters somewhat. Some of
that "muddy" comes from the various schools of thought, i.e.
pre-trib vs post-trib; a-mill vs pre-mill; etc. It seems like the more
important a prophetic passage is, the more controversial it is.

I of course can't answer for the list in so far as their own
personal beliefs go. I could give you my personal opinion on
Matt 24, but it's just an opinion and wouldn't amount to a whole
lot anyway. <g> I will say though that I was taught similar to
what you've been taught. Whether that particular
interpretation is right or wrong is not for me to say. Not the answer
you were wanting huh? <g>

and I struggle big time. These issues were never addressed in my prophecy
class - remember (pre-trib) we are not gonna be here during the tribulation
period! Which brings me to my question - I read somewhere that children and
the elderly would be spared the horror of the tribulation. There was also a
scriptural reference but I can't find it now. Is this true and if so can you
point me to the scripture? If it is true, it brings up a multitude of new
questions (like ...just the saved elderly? I could go on and on....) How's
that for a rabbit trail? Thanks is advance for helping me hash this out!

Hi!,
Just a couple of thoughts here.....Luke 21:36 "Watch ye therefore, and pray
always that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that
shall come to pass, and to stand before the son of man."
Escaping ALL these things sounds pre-trib to me. However, it sounds
conditional......that we must be watching and praying that we be accounted
worthy! Paul said he was pressing towards the mark for the prize of the
high calling of God in Christ Jesus. These words "high calling" can also
be translated as "upward" [high] and "invitation" [calling]. Sounds like
the rapture.......but notice it is a "prize"....salvation is not a prize to
be won or earned but a gift. This sounds like you can "win" the rapture by
being "worthy". And how about the Laodiceans in Rev. 3 that will be
"spewed out of His mouth"? They will have to be "in Christ" to be "spewed
out", right? So, how about the suggestion that there is a pre-trib rapture
for those who are watching and praying (wise virgins)......and a pre-wrath
rapture for those who are lukewarm (foolish virgins) and must be chastised
[tribulation] Rev. 3:19.
Just my views!
God Bless,
CL

One more thought......about whether or not children or elderly go through
the tribulation......firstly I have always been taught that children will
go in the [pre-trib] rapture, I have never heard anything about the
elderly. But, I personally do not hold to this line of thought.....in the
past when God has poured out his judgement (the flood, Sodom and Gomorrah)
only the children of the righteous were spared, along with the righteous!
The children of the unrighteous perished with them. That is not to say
anything about the childrens salvation, or eternal destiny, just the fact
that physically they lost their lives in the judgement along with their
parents who were unrighteous.

Hi guys...

I tell ya what... let's make Matthew 24 a future study. If we
don't, we are liable to start wandering off in many directions,
going back and forth, and not really get anything settled.
There's a lot of stuff in that chapter that we need to know and
deal with. I think doing a list study -- perhaps a structured
project (a little different from the other studies we do) -- will help
us all. We'll do a verse by verse study. I'll give more details
when the time comes. Let's first examine Daniel 9 which deals
with Daniel's 70 weeks. This will give us the background
needed for understanding Matthew 24. After Matt, then
perhaps we'll look at Revelation 6, which goes hand in hand
with Matt 24.

Jan, hold on to your questions -- make a list perhaps. <g> I
believe you (and most certainly I) will come to a greater
understanding if we go at this one step or question at a time,
verse by verse, thought by thought. If we aren't sure of our
conclusions, then we'll keep praying and searching until we do
get satisfied, or until God says it's not something we need to
know right now. Sound like a plan? <g>

Hi,
Just wanted to thank you for the clarification and direction of the
new study. I'm excited just thinking about all the Word we're going to
get into; Matt. 24, Luke 21, Dan. 9, maybe even into Rev.6. Let's go!
So be it! Amen!

UNIVERSAL EMAIL ADDRESS SYSTEM PROPOSED
(ZDNet Central 8/10/98)

At the request of the Clinton Administration, the
U.S. Postal Service is taking public comments on
a plan to create email addresses for every postal
address in the United States. The plan would make
use of the under-utilized .us domain and the Postal
Service would set up the infrastructure and manage
addresses. The concept is seen in part as a boon
to ecommerce.

HEADLINE: "Did Saddam pull the strings of the terrorist bombers?
Ambrose Evans-Pritchard says that the Nairobi and Dar es Salaam
killings were the work of Muslim pariah states, not of Islamic
fundamentalists"

                      By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard

IF IN doubt, blame Mohammed. The Washington counter-terrorist
fraternity was at it again after the twin bombings in Nairobi and Dar
es Salaam, attributing the attacks to the shadowy underworld of
Islamic fundamentalism. This time, the finger was pointed at Osama bin
Laden, the eccentric millionaire son of a Saudi construction magnate,
who has made it his life's mission to liberate the Arabian holy sites
from American "occupation".

It reminds me of the instant punditry after the Oklahoma City
bombing in 1995, when the experts all agreed that it was an Islamic
attack of some sort. They divided into their usual factions, of
course, but the dominant line was that the culprits were freelance
Muslim fanatics, a loose grouping of stateless fundamentalists - bin
Laden's sort of followers - committed to total warfare against Western
civilisation. Then, to general consternation, the bomb truck was
traced to a fresh-faced American from upstate New York. His name was
Tim Tuttle, the alias of Tim McVeigh.

This time, perhaps, the television pundits are right, but there
are grounds for suspecting that these bombings in Africa were
something different: straightforward acts of political terrorism by
established states seeking to influence events to their advantage. The
first clue is the announcement by the Tanzanian authorities that they
had arrested a group of Iraqi and Sudanese nationals.

The inclusion of Iraqis puts a new complexion on the matter, for
the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein is not remotely fundamentalist. It
is secular, with pan-Arabist ambitions. And, of course, it is in a
continuous state of de facto war with the United States.

Rather than dwelling on the fevered fatwas of bin Laden, who is
reportedly holed up in the Hindu Kush, it might be worth dwelling on
the specific threats issued by the government of Iraq, an entity that
still has a sophisticated intelligence service and that has not given
up its quest for weapons of mass destruction.

Last May, Iraq informed the UN Security Council that it was not
going to tolerate the continuation of UN sanctions beyond the eight-
year anniversary, a date that would fall on August 6, 1998. (The
African bombs went off the next morning - August 7). After last May,
Iraq issued repeated warnings that it would resort to "an alternative
strategy", that "there is more than one way to get out of the tunnel"
and that it would make the enemy "pay a dear price if it decides to
continue the siege". In case there was any doubt about the timetable
for this ultimatum, Iraq's Vice-President, Taha Yasin Ramadan,
explained that it was "not years or months"; it was imminent.

It is widely assumed that Iraq eschews terrorism, but that may be
wishful thinking. Dr Laurie Mylroie, an associate at the Foreign
Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia and editor of Iraq News,
argues that Saddam has been engaged in an arm's-length campaign of
terrorist retaliation against US targets for the past five years.
After sifting the evidence in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, she
concluded that it was an Iraqi operation that manipulated and enhanced
an existing conspiracy by Egyptian fundamentalists. It was a
conclusion shared by the head of the FBI's New York bureau, Jim Fox,
who was inexplicably overruled by Washington. Mylroie has also
constructed a case that the unsolved Dharan bombing in Saudi Arabia,
which killed 19 US airmen in their barracks in 1996, was an Iraqi
attack targeted against the US air crews that enforced the no fly-zone
in Iraq.

As for the Sudanese, they, too, have a major bone to pick with the
United States. The National Islamic Front has been blacklisted as a
terrorist regime and a human rights pariah by the US State Department.
(Sudan has increasingly replaced Lebanon as a major haven for Middle
East terrorist groups.) The Clinton administration has been supplying
weapons to frontline African states, which in turn have been slipping
the materiel to the Christian and animist rebel forces of the Sudan
People's Liberation Army. The Khartoum government happens to be of a
fundamentalist Islamic cast, but that is not the salient issue. It is
America's tilt in favour of the rebels that matters, for it changes
the balance of the war and imperils the regime. The Sudanese
leadership has a clear motive for lashing out at America, and has
every reason to believe that this White House will wilt under
pressure.

Moreover, the Sudanese have a long history of unholy collusion
with Saddam. Sudan was one of the few countries to support the Iraqi
invasion of Kuwait in 1990, and Sudanese officers were later captured
serving with the Iraqi forces. Saddam parked much of his air force in
the Sudan, out of harm's way, where some of it remains to this day.
The SPLA rebels claim that the Iraqi jets, piloted by Iraqi nationals,
are now used for napalm raids against villages in southern Sudan. This
Iraqi-Sudanese entente has precious little to do with Islam; pan-Arab
solidarity plays its part, no doubt, but more than anything it is an
alliance of pariah states that have fallen foul of the international
order.

The bin Ladens of this world are no more than conduits, or useful
fronts, employed by regimes that use terror for purposes of
realpolitik. They offer a veneer of religious justification and a
degree of deniability. The Clinton administration has been totally
unwilling to confront this fact, perhaps because to do so would
mandate a condign response, one that would expose the illusion of
peace in the Middle East and disturb the price of oil. But this time,
I suspect, the fingerprints of state-sponsored terrorism will be so
clear that Washington will have to act.

                        The Wall Street Journal
                             June 28, 1993

               "Saddam's Fingerprints on N.Y. Bombings"
                           By Laurie Mylroie

Military retaliation from Baghdad was the main administration
concern following Saturday's strike on Iraq. Yet U.S. officials
should start thinking seriously about the question of retaliation
through terror. It is quite possible, for example, that there was a
connection between Saddam and recent attempts to blow up Manhattan.
It is quite possible that New York's terror is Saddam's revenge.
Speculation about the responsibility for last week's bombing plot
and the earlier World Trade Center bombing has focused on Iran, Sudan,
and the fundamentalist Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman. Much energy has been
spent linking the terror to Islamic fundamentalism. Yet Saddam, a
secular tyrant, is also suspect.
Information already in the public domain allows us to make this
case. Start with the fact that the most important person in the Trade
Center bombing is an Iraqi, Ramzi Ahmad Yusuf. Known in New York as
Rashid, Mr. Yusuf has 11 aliases. The U.S. press has reported that he
left Iraq in early 1992, transiting Jordan to Pakistan. He entered
New York in early September on Pakistan Airways. Mr. Yusuf,
traveling on his Iraqi passport, passed through immigration by
requesting asylum. The FBI claims the plot began in August, while Mr.
Yusuf was abroad.

                         -Ordering Chemicals-

Mr. Yusuf soon became the roomate of Mohammed Salameh, the naive
Palestinian who repeatedly returned to the van rental agency for his
deposit. Passionate, but not bright, Mr. Salameh would appear a
ready dupe to an intelligence operative. In trial documents, an
Iraqi-American, Musaab Yassin, has stated that he had known Mr.
Salameh two years. Mr. Yassin moved into Mr. Salameh's apartment in
September 1992, and Mr. Salameh moved out. Mr. Yassin's younger
brother, Abboud, lived with him. An Arab who knows Musaab Yassin,
like Mr. Yusuf, came to the U.S. in the fall of 1992, seeking
medical treatment.
In late November, Mr. Yusuf allegedly ordered chemicals for the
bomb and Mr. Salameh rented a locker to store them. The plot was
underway. In early February, Mr. Salameh notified his landlord that
he and Mr. Yusuf would leave at month's end. On Feb. 26 the World
Trade Center was bombed. Messrs. Salameh and Yusuf vacated their
apartment two days later.
Mr. Salameh was arrested March 4. Musaab Yassin returned home
that day to find the FBI searching his apartment, while Abboud had
been taken for questioning. Abboud Yassin told the FBI that he taught
Mr. Salameh to drive the van that carried the bomb, that he
accompanied Mr. Salameh to an apartment later identified as the
bomb's testing ground; and Abboud Yassin's information helped lead the
FBI to the locker where the chemicals had been stored. The U.S. press
reports that Abboud Yassin then returned to Iraq, as did Mr. Yusuf.
The New York Times reported that Arabs who knew Mr. Salameh and the
second Palestinian arrested, Nidal Ayyad, said that the two had "close
ties with two Iraqis, one of whom they say was named Rashid, but both
of whom have since disappeared."
This information, although sketchy, indicates Iraqi activity. If
Mr. Yusuf, the key figure, had worked for Iran, Tehran would not have
let him return to Iraq. Given the totalitarian nature of the Iraqi
regime, even Abboud Yassin's return to Iraq is significant. An
innocent man would, arguably, have chosen to stay in the U.S.- he
would have a better chance of a fair hearing in a U.S. court than
before an Iraqi intelligence officer. If Abboud Yassin was involved
in the bombing- but was not acting under Baghdad's instruction- then
it was even more imprudent for him to return to Iraq. Mr. Yusuf and
Abboud Yassin could have gone to Afghanistan, where they would not
have exposed themselves to the potentially fatal suspicions of
Baghdad's intelligence agencies.
That two men involved came from Iraq and returned there is reason
enough to consider an Iraqi role in the World Trade Center bombing.
What other possible evidence is there? It has been reported that the
bombing suspects received money from abroad: up to $100,000 from
Germany, Iran, and "another Middle Eastern Country." That country is
probably Jordan, shielded by U.S. authorities who continue protecting
Amman for the sake of the "peace process." Without knowing how much
money came from each country, though, it is hard to exclude Iraq.
Last but not least, it is worth noting that the February bombing
occurred on the second anniversary of Kuwait's liberation.
What about last week's arrests? The FBI arrested five Sudanese
and three others as it broke up a second bombing plot. The
conspirators' first target was the United Nations' headquarters.
Other targets were added, including FBI headquarters in New York.
Additionally, four assassinations were planned, including that of
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and U.N. secretary general Boutros
Boutros-Ghali.
Like the Trade Center bombing, much of this operation was
amateurish. The conspiracy instigator, Siddiq Ibrahim Ali, had a plan
to get a car into the FBI building, but it was amateurish (he proposed
shooting the guards). Professional terrorists divide their
organizations into small cells, each devoted to specific tasks. These
planners used a large group in which every participant was known to
the others, so that the entire plot could quickly unravel once one
member was caught. Yet, like the World Trade Center bombing, this was
audacious. Had it suceeded, thousands could have died.
It's important to note that both the Trade Center bombing and the
later plot represent something new- at least in the West. Saddam
however commits that kind of carnage on a daily basis.
Two of the nations thought to be behind the second plot are not
ideal suspects. Khartoum is suspected, because Sudanese played a big
role in the plot. With Iran, Sudanese has been involved in a violent
campaign to overthrow secular governments in North Africa, including
Mr. Boutros-Ghali's own government in Cairo. But Khartoum has not
sponsored terrorism against U.S. targets. That it should suddenly
support potentially the most devastating anti-American attack ever
makes little sense. A separate question though is whether Sudanese
diplomats could be bought. This is possible, since Khartoum is broke,
and months behind in paying its diplomats.
Iranian sponsorship of the plot is also unlikely. Iran has no big
quarrel with the U.N.- it benefits from the U.N.'s disarmament of
Iraq. The U.N. is not the obvious target for Muslim extremists.
Their quarrel is with the U.S. They could have easily chosen an
American target. Explaining why fundamentalists would bomb the U.N.
is possible, but the explanation is strained- that they see the U.N.
as a U.S. surrogate; that their violence is caused by anger at many
issues involving the U.N., including Bosnia, Somalia and the
Palestinians. The Trade Center suspects issued a set of demands that
the U.S. stop aiding Israel and stop interfering in the internal
affairs of Middle Eastern countries.
Saddam by contrast has every reason to attack the U.N. Saddam also
hates Egypt's Mubarak and wants him dead, no less than he wanted
George Bush dead. Baghdad Radio threatened Mr. Bush personally
during the Gulf War and Mubarak as well, "Does he (Mubarak) think that
the crime he committed against the people of Iraq will go
unpunished?...Prepare yourself for it and shiver at the thought."

                            -More To Come-

Attention has focused on the Iranian-Sudanese relationship. But
Baghdad could as easily recruit Sudanese as Tehran.
For Saddam, Iraqi sponsorship would be vengeance with a twist.
Baghdad wants Washington to blame Iran for the terror striking
America's shores. If it doesn't and fundamentalists are caught, that
too is fine, because it promotes a hysteria about Islamic
fundamentalism and Iran which, Saddam calculates, would eventually
benefit Iraq. If Saddam is behind the attacks, more will surely
follow.
The focus of the New York investigations should shift to the
question of state sponsorship. If considerable evidence points to
Saddam, then President Clinton must fulfill his Saturday pledge: "We
will combat terrorism. We will deter aggrssion. We will protect our
people."

----------------------------------------------------------------------

                   *** ANNIVERSARIES & BOMBINGS ***

I don't know if anyone has noticed this or not, but it is interesting
circumstantial evidence that Saddam is behind recent terrorist attacks
against the U.S.:

* The WTC bombing (2/27) occurred on the anniversary of Kuwait's
liberation from Iraq during the Gulf War.

* The Dhahran bombing of U.S. barracks in Saudi Arabia (6/26) occurred
on the anniversary of a U.S. missile attack against Iraq in
retaliation for a botched assassination attempt against former
president George Bush.

* The TWA Flight 800 explosion and crash (7/17), although not
officially attributed to a terrorist bombing (even though traces of
Semtex were discovered in the debris), occurred on the anniversary of
the coup the brought Saddam Hussein to power. This anniversary, July
17th, is also when Saddam usually makes his key annual address such as
in 1990 when he threatened Kuwait and this year when he threatened to
stop cooperation with U.N. weapons inspections.

* The most recent East African embassy bombings (8/7) occurred on the
anniversary of when economic sanctions were imposed against Iraq in
1990.

There is also evidence Saddam acts according to astrology as noted in
my article "Kremlin Astrology"-

              http://www.ucc.uconn.edu/~jpa94001/j33.html

Below are four key incidences where Saddam acted at a time of
astrological significance. The most recent time is the East African
embassy bombings which coincided with a lunar eclipse.

1. *July 22nd, 1990: Total solar eclipse.

Marked when Iraq began massing forces on the Kuwaiti border just prior
to the 1990 invasion.

2. *August 2nd thru 7th, 1990: Lunar eclipse squares Mars and Pluto.

In the Market Watch section of the July 16th, 1990 issue of
'Barron's', there is an excerpt from the newsletter of financial
astrologer Arch Crawford. It reads in part:

"...Aug. 6 (Lunar Eclipse squares Mars + Pluto). Expect some major
catastrophe on that last one, Aug. 2-7, as something explodes in a big
way... Astronomically similar to the Chernobyl disaster..."

On August 2nd, Iraq invaded Kuwait precipitating the Persian Gulf
crisis.

3. *January 15th, 1991: Solar eclipse with rare 6-planet alignment in
Capricorn (note: in astrology the Sun and Moon are considered
planets).

January 15th, 1991 was the U.N. deadline for Iraq to pull-out of
Kuwait before the allied attack a day later- the beginning of the Gulf
War.

According to an ancient Babylonian prophecy, "when all the planets
meet in Capricorn the world will be destroyed by fire". In January of
1991, there was a six-planet alignment in Capricorn, and Venus,
Jupiter and Pluto were heavily aspected in Capricorn and in tension
with each other. Thus, from the perspective of someone in Iraq and
the site of ancient Babylon, their "world was destroyed by fire" as
forecast in this astrological prophecy (see Moira Timms' 'Beyond
Prophecies and Predictions', pp.206 & 209).

4. *February 26th, 1996: Sun conjunct Mars T-squares Pluto and the
moon, which are in opposition (180 degrees apart).

Configuration is similar to the one that marked when Iraq invaded
Kuwait in August of 1990. Notably, February 26th is also the fifth
anniversary of Kuwait's liberation from Iraqi occupation and the end
of the Gulf War. (And the anniversary of the WTC bombing.)

Wave of terrorist bombings against Israel occur starting February 25th
leading to large-scale "Grapes of Wrath" Israeli military action in
Lebanon- the largest such Israeli operation in Lebanon since Israel's
1982 invasion of Lebanon.

                             By Liu Yegang

The tanzanian government has warned foreign countries involved in
the gulf war not to introduce their conflict into the east african
nation. the foreign ministry issued a statement this week to all
foreign embassies here warning that the gulf war should be limited
within the parties concerned. the ministry told the embassies that
they can ask for security protection from the tanzanian authorities
during the war time if they need. the tanzanian government has already
tightened security around embassies, institutions and diplomats'
residences of the united states and its allies involved in the gulf
war. the u.s. embassy has been closed since the outbreak of the gulf
war 10 days ago. u.s. diplomats and staff of other international
institutions were told to stay home to avoid possible terrorist
attacks. bomb detectors reportedly found a bomb planted inside the
u.s. embassy here this week. the bomb was removed from the mission
premises and detonated. an american diplomat said at the weekend that
they were worried about possible attacks from palestinians, iraqis and
moslems. the moslem population in tanzania constitutes one third of
the country's total population. but tanzanian police have also
tightened security around the embassies of iran and palestine. iraq
closed its embassy here on january 15 and all iraqi diplomats left for
home on the same day.

"U.S. Embassy staff in Tanzania reduced"
                      JANUARY 26, 1991, SATURDAY

                             By Liu Yegang

The United States has recalled its non-essential embassy staff from
Tanzania following a threat on their lives by "Iraq-sponsored
terrorists" , the u.s. embassy here informed the tanzanian authorities
today. according to a statement the u.s. embassy sent to the tanzanian
government, the u.s. administration has received reliable information
on the threat from " iraq -sponsored terrorists to americans and
american facilities" in tanzania. the statement said that the threat
is specific to official americans and that non-official americans in
the country and private business have not been targeted. the tanzanian
government, in a note to all foreign embassies here early this week,
has warned foreign countries involved in the gulf war not to introduce
their conflict into the east african nation. the government has
tightened security at the embassies, institutions and important
diplomats' residents of the united states and other member states of
the allied forces. the american embassy here has been closed down
since the outbreak of the gulf war. police officers armed with machine
guns are stationed on the way to the embassy building. an american
official said here today that they are worried about possible attacks
from palestinians and the moslems, who constitute one third of the
total 24 million population of tanzania. meanwhile, tanzanian police
have also tightened security at the embassies of iran, libya and the
palestine. iraq closed down its embassy here last wednesday and all of
its diplomats have left for home.
