Hello everyone...
We feel that we are now ready to move to another area of study in the
Bible, so we have chosen Revelation 12 as our next focus.
What this involves is everyone who is wanting to participate to
simply begin doing a personal bible study and then sharing with the
list any interesting points or ideas that you come across. This may
be a word, phrase, or verse that has been impressed upon you. So
beginning today, the members of the research team and myself will
begin studying Rev 12 and then sharing our findings with the list. If
you have any questions about how you can participate, please send me
a private note and I'll try to explain further on how our these
studies are conducted on the list.
Secondly, if you have a particular area of the bible, whether it be a
chapter or a particular passage, that you would like to see the list
do a study on, then drop me a note and we'll consider it for the next
study.

From the list's point of view, the studies are basically done privately. Each
member should go at their own pace and study however they wish. We also
assume that each member will do their own background study for a particular
passage, i.e. understand what the passage is about, who wrote it, why it was
written, etc.
As far as the articles or papers that we put together, they deal primarily with
words and word origins, phrases, concepts, etc. The primary focus and purpose
of the list is not to interpret each scripture, but instead to provide a source of
reference for further study. When reading, each one of us will in various ways be
impressed or lead to a particular verse, phrase or word when studying.
Something will usually just pop out at you. It's these "pop-outs" <g> that we are
interested in. The "research" portion of the list comes into play by searching for
various applications of these "pop-outs." In other words, how was this word used
elsewhere in the bible, where else does this phrase show up, what cultural or
societal applications or influences are involved?
I personally when studying a particular passage will first focus on the general
meaning, audience, etc. -- a "sunday school" approach. Once I understand the
general circumstances involved and hopefully have listened to the Holy Spirit, I'll
go over each scripture more slowly and really think about each word and phrase
and try to reason why that particular word or phrase was used. I'm a firm believer
that every word in the bible is there for a reason. God doesn't waste words. This
is one reason why I enjoy word studies so much. After I looked up various words
and phrases, I usually have become interested in one where I will do a deeper
search that once my references at home are exhausted, I'll go online and see
what else I can find. The results of these searches serve as the basis for the
documents that we have online.
Now please remember that these searches are not necessarily conclusive.
Again, we don't try to intepret the scripture in question. We are merely showing
other ways or possible connections with how the word or phrase has been used
in the past that may or may not be applicable to the interpretation of the
passage. I once explained to friend that when studying I imagine the scriptures
as being suspended in space and that I am trying to examine it from all angles. I
want to view them from above, from below and from all sides to see what they
reveal. I get excited when studying the bible that's comparable I imagine to
going on a treasure hunt. I want to share this excitement with others and hopefully
share in their excitement as well.

King Hussein of Jordan has criticised what he described as the
contradictory attitudes towards peace of the Israeli Prime
Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, before meeting with the Palestinian
leader, Yasser Arafat.
King Hussein said he was disturbed by the stalemate in the peace
process and he hoped it would be possible to move away from what
he called the "fortress mentality" in Israel.
He also expressed regret over the killing of at least five
Palestinians by Israeli soldiers during violent clashes on
Thursday.
"It is a sign of despair," he said of the clashes that erupted in
the Palestinian territories on the 50th anniversary of Israel's
creation, an event Arabs refer to as Al-Nakbah, "the
catastrophe."
King Hussein, who signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, has
campaigned hard for warm ties with Israel, and is widely
respected in the Jewish state.
But the monarch has become critical of Mr Netanyahu's tough line
with the Palestinians.
Later King Hussein met the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, to
discuss the Middle East deadlock and the clashes with Israeli
troops.
Mr Arafat said King Hussein promised to continue his contact with
the various parties trying to negotiate a peace settlement in the
Middle East.
Meanwhile, there have been further clashes between troops and
demonstrators in Jerusalem and the West Bank town of Hebron, but
there were no reports of serious injuries.

A Woman Clothed with the Sun - A Catholic View
(From a personal study of Revelation 12:1)

(Rev 12:1 KJV) "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a
woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon
her head a crown of twelve stars:"
There are at least three distinct beliefs or ideas concerning the
interpretation of the "woman" in Rev 12:1, and those being that
the woman represents either: Mary (the mother of Jesus), the
Church, or Israel. This paper will briefly examine the Catholic belief
and that being that the "woman" is "Mary." As a point of
reference, the submitter of this material feels its important to
note that the teaching of Mary as being the "woman clothed in the
sun" is not only incorrect, but constitutes a false doctrine.
While the Bible Prophecy Research and Study List appreciates and
examines various and often opposing viewpoints, such viewpoints
must have some foundation of Truth. This particular viewpoint is
clearly not one of them.

A movement in the Catholic Church known as 'The Marian Movement
of Priests' began on May 8, 1972 when "Father Stefano Gobbi, a
priest from Milan, Italy, was taking part in a pilgrimage to
Fatima. While praying in the Chapel of the Apparitions for some
priests who, besides having given up their own vocations, were
attempting to form an association in rebellion against the
authority of the Roman Catholic Church, an interior force urged
Fr. Gobbi to have confidence in the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
What Fr. Gobbi had just experienced was an interior locution. It
is not an apparition or other communication perceived by the
human senses, but a spiritual phenomenon present in the life of
the Church and described in manuals of Catholic theology. The
messages (interior locutions) are the gift by which God wishes to
make something known to humanity, in Fr. Gobbi's particular case
by means of the Blessed Virgin Mary."
The movement has grown to a membership of "at least 400
cardinals and bishops, more than 100,000 priests, and millions of
religious and faithful around the world."
In 1973, Gobbi started to write down these 'interior locutions'
or messages that he believed he was receiving from Mary. He has
received over 500 such messages and the 'phenomenon' is still
continuing today. These messages have now been organized and
gathered into a free book entitled "To the Priests, Our Lady's

that is used to bind Satan.]

In these times, the angels of light are going about the world to
mark, with the sign of the Cross, all those who form part of my
victorious army. Against these, the star of the abyss will have
no power, even if they will be called to great sufferings, and
some to shed their own blood.
[The phrase 'angels of light' is a New Age buzz
word. It most often shows up when people speak of
contacting UFOs and "spirit guides." Interesting that it
shows up here as well - (2 Cor 11:14 "And no marvel;
for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of
light.")
Another interesting phrase is the reference to 'mark'
those with the 'sign of the Cross' that join this army.
(Rev 13:16 - "And he causeth all, both small and great,
rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their
right hand, or in their foreheads.")]
But it will be with the great sufferings of these children of
mine that I will obtain my greatest victory.

The flag of the European Union will soon wave along side of the
national flags of the European Union. On a background of blue,
the color of the mantle of Mary, are placed 12 stars. What is
thus symbolized?

that the flag of Europe is a symbol of Mary." The following

Europe is designed to express that Mary is the mistress of

An alleged vision of Mary called, "Lady of all Nations", demanded
on March 3, 1953: "Nations of Europe, unite." On March 25, 1957
the European Common Market was founded. Bishop Dr. Graber said on
September 9, 1978- "I have demanded a Marianic European
International...We pray and ask in silence, that the occident
will be once more what it used to be, an IMPERIUM MARIANUM." At
Fatima in 1917 an apparition of Mary promised peace on the
condition that the peoples of the world would be consecrated to
her. "The peace-conditions of Heaven are condensed in two parts:

immaculate heart of Mary.
Another vision states that as the world languishes for unity in
regard to their needs, the Lord and Master will bring spiritual

DOOMSDAY: IT'S BECOMING AN ANNUAL EVENT
Sometime over the next five years, a long list of Christian prophesy
teachers, Jewish kabbalists, Satanists, astrologers and UFO believers all
forsee the Earth's imminent and abrupt demise.
These folks generally don't agree on much, but they all see signs that the
end is at hand. Depending on which doomsday you believe in, the world will
end somewhere between August 18, 1999 and 2012.
But before you run for the hills, consider that an equally diverse bunch
was convinced that we would have already witnessed the sunset of sunsets
in the last five years.
Christopher Columbus, who shattered the flat-Earth society's planetary
vision, pegged the end of the world at 1656. The religious sect known as
the Shakers believed it would come in 1792, while the Jehovah's Witnesses
have made several preparations for doomsdays -- first in 1914 and again in
1925.
It's hard to find a year without a doomsday prophesy. Perhaps the time to
start worrying might be when you stop hearing the end is near.
"Every generation comes with a large contingent of people who believe the
end is near," said investigative journalist Richard Abanes, author of
'End-Times Visions: The Road to Armageddon?' (Four Walls Eight Windows
Press).
"It is very comforting for many people to believe they are the generation
who will meet God or see the end of time," he says. "It makes them feel
significant."
'End-Times Visions' takes a broad historical look at doomsday prophets and
puts them into context with modern apocalyptic movements like the Branch
Davidians, the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo and Heaven's Gate.
Abanes shows how the work of Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce and other celebrated
doomday prophets has been manipulated to satisfy the need to believe the
end is at hand. "Revisionism is very big," Abanes said. "Some of these
people revise their doomsday annually, as if the public doesn't remember."
Abanes also shows how several would-be prophets parlayed their apocalyptic
visions into big bucks.
One example given is Hal Lindsey who, in 'The Late Great Planet Earth',
boldly declared that "The Rapture" would begin before December 31, 1981
based on Christian prophesy, astronomy and a dash of ecological fatalism.
When the biblical interpretation proved dead wrong, Lindsey shifted the
key date in 'Planet Earth: 2000 A.D.' to the millennium.
In a recent radio interview, Lindsey reportedly backed off from that
prediction, and now says Armageddon might not come until 2048. "Put
another way," Abanes writes, "Lindsey, now in his mid-60s, will have to
make an embarrassing admission of inaccuracy only if he lives to be 120

MILITIAS BETTER EDUCATED, MORE HEAVILY ARMED THAN MOST
THINK -- STUDY
A University of Florida graduate student in anthropology, J. Keith Akins,
joined a Jacksonville militia group in March 1996 to research the movement
for his dissertation. He spent three years organizing the group's rallies,
planned meetings and training sessions with other militias throughout
Florida, in the process joining a skinhead's movement and a Ku Klux Klan
chapter.
Akins said his study defies the common belief that members of militias are
uneducated & poor. He found that statistically, militia members are better
educated - 27% of American adults being high school dropouts, according to
census data, compared with less than 10% of militia members throughout
Florida, Akins found - and their membership cuts across traditional class
boundaries, to include business owners, corporate execs, lawyers & doctors
intermingled with rednecks, the unemployed and menial labor.
"The militia movement is far more heavily armed than most people realize,"
Akins reported, "As the millennium approaches, members of these groups are
making more & more threats that may lead to violence..."
The millennium's significance is based on most militia's interpretation of
prophecies in the Bible's book of Revelation about the battle of
Armageddon, as well as persistant talk by evangelists such as Pat
Robertson about an approaching end to the world, he said.
"They keep talking about when the war starts, but no one makes any solid
predictions about how it will start or who is going to start it," Akins
said.
An estimated 440 militia groups exist across the United States, with
Florida having one of the largest concentrations of them, 77 groups.
According to Akins, nearly everyone in the militia groups owns multiple
firearms, and the amount of explosives each organization has access to is
far beyond what most people imagine.
"They also have a lot more ties to violent groups in Europe & Australia
than most people think, using the Internet to exchange information about
how to make weapons and manufacture explosives."
Despite their violent rhetoric, Akins said, most members are active in
their church, some are local politicians and nearly all are married with
children.
Akins, incidentally, told militia members his time with them was for
research. "I hated what these people stood for and were trying to
accomplish, but as I got to know them on a personal level, I found that
most to be hardworking and decent. They simply got caught up in cultural
changes that were beyond their ability to understand, and in a desperate
search for answers, bought into the movement's conspiracy theories."

excerpts of what I find. It's not conclusive as this will be an ongoing personal
project in reconciling the symbolism behind this passage of scripture.

The Woman as Israel
(Rev 12:1 KJV) "And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman
clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown
of twelve stars:"
"The woman symbolized Israel, as indicated by Genesis 37:9-11, where the sun
and the moon referred to Jacob and Rachel, Joseph's parents. The stars in the
woman's crown clearly related to the 12 sons of Jacob and identified the woman
as Israel fulfilling the Abrahamic Covenant."
A review of Joseph's dream:
(Gen 37:9 KJV) "And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren,
and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the
moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me."
"The sun, the moon, and 11 stars bowed down to him. In ancient cultures these
astronomical symbols represented rulers. The dream, then, symbolically
anticipated the elevation of Joseph over the whole house of Jacob (Joseph's
father, the sun; his mother, the moon; his 11 brothers, the stars,)."
"J.B. Smith cites Isaiah 60:1-3, 20 as proof that the sun refers to Israel's future
glory (A Revelation of Jesus Christ, p. 182):"

LOS ANGELES - Two Hollywood movies and a recent false alarm
have NASA scientists concerned that mass hysteria might accompany
the next prediction of an asteroid on a collision course with
Earth. So, NASA astronomers have agreed to keep such asteroid and
comet discoveries to themselves for 48 hours, while other
professional stargazers are being asked to report their findings
to NASA at least 72 hours before going public, the Los Angeles
Times reported Thursday. In March, an independent report that a
huge asteroid could collide with Earth was later found to be
wrong.

The Medium and The Message

When we study Torah, we relive the revelation on Mount Sinai. By learning
Torah, we do not merely inform ourselves of the content of the commandments:

New-concept weapons refer to weapons whose basic principles,
construction and killing and wounding mechanism are entirely different
from those of traditional-concept weapons. From the angle of military
medical prevention and protection research, they can be divided into
three groups: Group one are used mainly to inflict casualty on
personnel, such as infra-sound weapons; Group two can not only inflict
casualty to personnel, but also damage weapons and equipment, such as
laser weapons, microwave weapons, particle-beam weapons, and incoherent
light source; Group three are mainly used to destroy weapons and
equipment, while factors of casualty infliction to personnel are
basically the same as those of conventional weapons, such as
electromagnetic guns and electrothermal guns.
1. infra-sound Weapons
infra-sound refers to sound waves with frequency lower than 20 Hz,
which can cause malfunction of heart blood vessels, and of respiratory,
digestive and central nerve systems, disorientation and emotional
disorder.
Take these infra-sound functions as casualty factors and apply them
to weapon systems, are called infra-sound weapons. One kind of infra-
sound weapon, through bomb explosion, produces high-intensity infra-
sound wave impacting directly on human bodies. Another kind of infra-
sound weapon, installed and mounted on a vehicle, directionally radiates
infra-sound wave indirectly acting on human bodies with an effective
distance reaching several hundred meters. When transmitted in water,
air, or on ground, infra-sound wave has the special features of slight
attenuation, rapid speed, long effective distance, strong power of
penetration, and being hard to defend and protect against.
Some major military countries started research on infra-sound
weapons during 60s to 70s. infra-sound was proven capable of damaging
human sensory and internal organs and disabling people. A small amount
of output power can induce immeasurable fear and cause mass hysteria. A
large amount of output power can cause unstable mental state and body
malfunction, or even symptoms of mental disease. infra-sound can deal
effectively with personnel in camouflage and battlefield equipment. An
advanced infra-sound generator targeting personnel has been designed
and tested, with amount of energy of generated infra-sound wave
adjustable to cause personnel disorientation, nausea, vomiting, and
incontinence.
Research indicates that such reactions are temporary. Once wave
generation stops, symptoms disappear with no lasting side effects. At
present time, infra-sound weapons are still at the stage of
experimental research, with existing technical problems of intensity of
sound wave, directional beam convergence, and miniaturization of weapon
size. It is predicted that troops will not be equipped with infra-sound
weapons within fifteen years.
2. Laser Weapons
There are many kinds of laser weapons. They can be used to deal
with weapon systems, attack personnel, cause temporary blindness or
permanent damage. The prevention and protection aspects of military
medicine are mainly concerned with laser weapons generating interference
and causing blindness.
All main military major countries have developed, and continue to
develop, better laser weapons generating interference and causing
blindness. Some countries have already successfully developed and will
shortly be equipped with laser weapons causing blindness, and are also
engaged in development of high-energy laser weapon systems. Other
reports had it that laser weapons causing blindness have been openly
advertised for sales to armed forces of all countries in the world, and
that sales have been in the thousands.
The U.K. forces were the earliest to be equipped with laser weapons
generating interference and causing blindness with an effective distance
of five kilometers, which played a role in the Malvinas Islands War in
1982. Soviet forces also used laser guns to deal with muslin guerilla in
Afghanistan. High-energy laser weapons are mainly used against weapon
systems, and can also function against personnel to inflict casualty.
3. Microwave Weapons
Microwave weapons operate at frequencies in the range of (3 - 3000)
x 106, with wavelength at 1 mm-1 m (in between radio wave and infrared),
can transmit at speed of light, with high-energy wave beam oriented by
antenna.
One type of microwave weapons is high-efficiency microwave shell
tips for onetime use. Another type is radiation apparatus for repeated
use.
Microwave weapons are mainly used in electronic interference, and
can also be used to cause the loss of fighting power, but less death.
All main military major countries have engaged in research on
microwave weapons, with rapid progress in recent years. It was reported
that for the first time the U.S. forces used microwave shell tips in the
Gulf War, but that their effects were hard to determine. Experts in
foreign armed forces think that many technical problems exist with high-
energy microwave weapon systems, and predict that troops will not be
equipped with such weapons within 15 years.
4. Particle-beam Weapons
Particle-beam weapons are one type of directional weapons that take
a particle stream (electrons, protons or ions), accelerate it to near
the speed of light, pass it through a magnetic field for beam
convergence, and use its very high energy to destroy weapons and
equipment.
There were many technical problems during the development process.
Some countries listed particle-beam weapons as an emphasized development
item in the 80s but with little progress. After adjustment, they are
only expected to be used to identify real missile heads from fake ones
in the next 10-15 years.
5. Incoherent Light Source and Super-high Frequency Weapons
Study from experts in foreign armed forces think that bright
incoherent light source can cause blindness and disorientation, and can
also lead to symptoms of mental illness. Super-high frequency weapons
can interfere with human nervous system activities, temporarily disable
people, cause unbearable noise and sense of whistling sound, or even
damage nervous systems leading to death. The existing problems with
these weapons are short launching effective distance, high cost and need
for miniaturization of weapon size.
6. Haloperdal Some countries list haloperdol as one item in their
inventory of non-lethal technical plan. The inventory claims that "when
haloperdol mixes with DMSO (causing chemical material to rapidly
penetrate skin and be absorbed into blood), it can disable personnel
without protective clothing, can be used to suppress riot and reduce
death. Results depend on the dropping system and its degree of
purification."
7. Ecological Weapons
Various ecological weapons can be developed via earthquakes or
volcanic eruptions triggered by some electromagnetic waves, wind
direction changes, spread of genetically altered insects to destroy
agricultural products, and use lasers to destroy ozone layer in enemy
atmosphere to change weather.
Research reports from foreign armed forces had it that new-concept
weapons will play an important role in future wars, and that new-concept
weapons under focused development include laser weapons, incoherent
light source, super-high frequency weapons, infra-sound weapons,
communications war schemes, and electromagnetic pulse weapons, etc.
At present time, weapons generating interference and causing
blindness have become practical to use. Foreign armed forces already
have corresponding prevention and protection measures, standard, and
diagnostic techniques, and have conducted further research. Although
battlefield use of high-energy microwave weapons are still long way off,
microwave electronic interference equipment are already widely utilized.
Therefore, medical protection against microwave are already being
developed.

The Book of Ruth
The Book of Ruth is found in third main division of the Bible, Ketuvim
(Writings). The book was once preserved on parchment and thus came to be
known by its Hebrew name of Megillat Ruth, the Scroll of Ruth. Set in the
period of the Judges, it tells the story of a Moabite girl who adopts the
faith and land of the Jews during the harvest season in Bethlehem. Ruth's
gentle and considerate behavior towards her widowed mother-in-law Naomi
attracts the attention of Boaz, the leader of the generation, who eventually
marries her. The child born of their union is Oved, the grandfather of David.
Traditionally, Shavuot is the day that King David was born, and died. The
Book of Ruth concludes and establishes the pedigree of David, who was the
eventual product of the union between Ruth and Boaz. David is the beginning
of the line of kings in Israel leading to the Messiah. The outcome of Boaz
and Ruth's union attests to their personal greatness as well as the
magnitude of the reward for deeds of kindness and the degree of recognition
owed to a righteous convert.

Pilgrims seek Virgin Mary in N.J. supermarket
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Reuters) - Word that an image of the
Virgin Mary had appeared on a supermarket freezer door lured
pilgrims to a small store in New Jersey Monday.
The image, said to be a silhouette of a woman in a hooded
garment, first appeared Thursday and lasted through the weekend,
witnesses said.
They said the vision had appeared inside the thick,
double-paned glass door of a freezer containing sausages,
burritos and plantains at La Conga Supermarket in Jersey City, a
largely Hispanic and heavily Catholic working-class city a few
miles west of New York.
Although the image had faded away by Monday, people kept
arriving at the store.
Hundreds of visitors left candles, handwritten messages and
flowers, said Jarmina Cortes, owner of a flower shop next door
to the supermarket, who sent her six children to leave a bouquet
of a dozen white roses at the freezer.
``The people are still coming. Many are sick or tortured,''
she said. ``They are looking for help.''
Asked about the image, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic
Archdiocese in Newark, New Jersey, said: ``It is not impossible
that some condensation got inside those two thermal panes and
caused the image.
``I am led to believe that it is certainly not an
apparition,'' the spokesman, Michael Hurley, said. ``But could I
swear that it wasn't? No.''

Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks, is also referred to in the Bible as Hag
HaBikkurim, Festival of the First Fruits.
One of the most spiritual experiences connected to farming was the offering
of produce in the Holy Temple. In Temple times, Shavuot was an agricultural
festival when Jews from all over the land of Israel trekked to Jerusalem to
offer their first fruits of the seven species, giving rise to the name Chag
Habikkurim, Festival of the First Fruits. This pilgrimage was one of three
that were required of all Jews who were able, the other two being Pesach and
Sukkot.
Shavuot also marked the end of a harvest cycle, which began when the barley
crop was offered on Pesach. Wheat was then offered on Shavuot.
Barley was used as animal feed, whereas wheat was generally saved for human
consumption. Thus the two offerings represented the movement from the
animalistic, slave existence of Egypt (the Pesach offering) to the elevated
experience of
human beings in the Divine Image in a relationship with God (the revelation
on Sinai at Shavuot). Thus the wheat offering of Shavuot was also a
culmination of the Omer period in metaphysical as well as agricultural terms.

NETANYAHU WILL NOT ACCEPT EU DECISION
"We have no intention to preserve a high rate of employment for
Palestinians, if the European decision causes a drop in employment for
Israelis," said Prime Minister Netanyahu today. He was referring to a
European Union decision to boycott all Jewish produce made in Judea and
Samaria. The European Union responded that the issue was not political,
but rather a legal issue of borders. Netanyahu had said earlier that if
the EU implements this decision, this will be the end of their position as
mediator between Israel and the Palestinians.
HAS DAM THREAT EXPIRED?
Jordan and Syria signed a preliminary agreement to build a dam on the
Yarmuk River, a tributary of the Jordan River. For most of its course,
the Yarmuk forms the boundary between Syria and Jordan, and the lower 14 miles
(23 kilometers) of the river are under Israeli control. The agreement
stipulates that Jordan will receive 120 million cubic meters of water a
year, while Syria will utilize 70% of the electric power produced by the
dam. The project will cost a hefty $420 million, which Jordan and Syria
will have to find ways to raise. In 1987, Jordan and Syria began
construction on the dam, which ceased when the World Bank withdrew its
support after Israel threatened to destroy the dam if it was built.
CHIEF OF STAFF UPHOLDS SABBATH
Sabbath desecration in the army has resulted in the discharge of an IDF
officer. Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Amnon Lipkin-Shachak ordered the officer
discharged when it was learned that he had ordered his soldiers in the
Choron Camp to paint the base on the Sabbath in anticipation of a visit by
General Staff officers. Shachak learned about the incident after MK
Chanan Porat submitted a complaint.

Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai, this morning (Tuesday),
19.5.98, met with visiting Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Victor
Possulvalyuk. The two men discussed a range of issues related to the
Middle East situation and the peace process.
Defense Minister Mordechai's proposal to implement UN Security
Council Resolution 425 was the focal point of their talks. The Defense
Minister explained the main points of his initiative and the sincerity
of the government's intentions to implement Resolution 425 while
providing for the appropriate security procedures.
Defense Minister Mordechai asked Mr. Possulvalyuk to inform Syria
of Israel's unequivocal desire to negotiate with it and find ways to
achieve a peace agreement between the two countries.
The Defense Minister reiterated the gravity with which Israel views
the need to prevent Russian technological assistance and know-how from
reaching Iran, especially those relating to the development of non-
conventional weapons and surface-to-surface missiles.

[Following the March 11, 1978 terrorist attack against two
Israeli buses near Tel-Aviv, killing 37 Israelis and injuring
76, the IDF entered southern Lebanon in order to clearout PLO
terrorist bases and staging areas south of the Litani River.
When Operation Litani began, the US began seeking a suitable
formula to send a United Nations peacekeeping force to the
area held by Israel, in order to bring about an Israeli
withdrawal and the establishment of a buffer zone in southern
Lebanon free of terrorists. As a result of these efforts, the
UN Security Council met and decided to adopt Resolution 425
calling on Israel to withdraw, and establishing a United
Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Text: ]
The Security Council,
Taking note of the letters of the Permanent Representative of Lebanon
(S/12600 and S/12606) and the Permanent Representative of Israel
(S/12607),
Having heard the statements of the Permanent Representatives of Lebanon
and Israel,
Gravely concerned at the deterioration of the situation in the Middle
East, and its consequences to the maintenance of international peace.
Convinced that the present situation impedes the achievement of a just
peace in the Middle East,
1. Calls for strict respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty
and political independence of Lebanon within its internationally
recognized boundaries;
2. Calls upon Israel immediately to cease its military action against
Lebanese territorial integrity and withdraw forthwith its forces from
all Lebanese territory;
3. Decides, in the light of the request of the Government of Lebanon, to
establish immediately under its authority a United Nations interim force
for southern Lebanon for the purpose of confirming the withdrawal of
Israeli forces, restoring international peace and security and assisting
the Government of Lebanon in ensuring the return of its effective
authority in the area, the force to be composed of personnel drawn from
States Members of the United Nations.

Shavuot was distinguished by the pilgrimage to Jerusalem and its
accompanying festivities.
After the destruction of the Temple, the pilgrimage aspect disappeared, and
the focus of the holiday switched to its other facet, the anniversary of the
"Giving of the Torah" - Matan Torah. Shavuot's special customs today combine
the dualistic nature of the holiday by celebrating physical and spiritual
"harvests" that occurred at this time.
"Tikkun L'eil Shavuot"
Since Shavuot marks the Giving of the Torah, studying Torah has long been a
Shavuot tradition. Based on a Midrash, the Jewish people have gone even one
step further. The Midrash recounts how on the night before Matan Torah, the
Jews encamped beneath Mount Sinai went to bed early. Since prophecy was
generally connected to dream states, they thought that sleeping would be an
appropriate way to prepare for the Big Day.
But, conclude the Sages. The people were wrong; they should have been up all
night quivering in anticipation. To correct this mistake of our forefathers,
the custom of the "Tikkun L'eil Shavuot" -- the "Reparation of Shavuot
Night" arose. Every Shavuot, study halls across the world are full of people
engrossed in the study of Torah throughout the night.

I'm continuing my personal study of the "woman" in Rev 12. Yesterday I
focused a little on the symbolism of the woman being that of the
nation of Israel. Carrying that thought further to verse 2:

(Rev 12:2 KJV) "And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to
be delivered."
According to Wilmington's Guide to the Bible, there are four women pictured
symbolically in the book of Revelation:
1. The woman with 12 stars, suffering in labor (Rev 12)
2. A bloody harlot (Rev 17)
3. An arrogant queen (Rev 18)
4. A pure bride (Rev 19)
It is Wilmington's belief that the woman represents Israel and in turn quotes the
following:
"Dr. Herman A. Hoyt writes: 'The activity of the woman from the time of Abraham
to the birth of Christ is described in [Rev 12:2]. The present tense of the verses
provides a dramatic setting. The woman is continuously with child. She is
continually crying in the pain of travail. She is continuously experiencing labor to
be delivered. Herein, then, are pictured the experiences of Israel as a nation from
the moment she was brought into existence with the call of Abraham until the day
Christ was born in Bethlehem. The entire message of the Old Testament from
Genesis to Malachi describes what is here set forth in one verse.' (Revelation, p.
61)"

Tue May 19 , 1998 -- Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai
briefed the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee on Monday,
telling it that Syria's military echelon is primarily engaged in the
development of long-range, ground-to-ground missiles, HA'ARETZ
reported. The missiles, including the Scud C, have been equipped with
VX nerve gas, which Mordechai said changes the strategic balance
between Israel and Syria.
A high-ranking officer from the Israel Defense Forces Intelligence Branch
told the committee that the Syrians are building the missiles with North
Korean know-how and Russian materials. Concerning Iran, the officer
said that ground-to-ground missile development is occurring according to
Iran's projected schedule, adding that if no changes occur, Iran will launch
its first missile in 1999.

NEARLY FOUR DECADES have passed since a total eclipse of the Sun was
visible from Europe. The long drought finally ends with the last
total eclipse of the Second Millennium on Wednesday, August 11, 1999.

Path Description
The last total solar eclipse of the 20th century begins in the North
Atlantic about 300 kilometers south of Nova Scotia where the Moon's
umbral
shadow first touches down on Earth at 09:30:57 UT. Along the sunrise
terminator, the maximum duration is a mere 47 seconds as seen from the
center of the narrow 49 kilometers wide path. No major landfall
occurs for
the first forty minutes as the shadow sweeps across the North
Atlantic. The umbra finally reaches the Isles of Scilly off the
southwestern coast of England at 10:10 UT (Figure 6). At this locale,
it is already mid-morning with the Sun 45º above the eastern horizon.
The center line duration is 2 minutes and the path width has expanded
to 103 kilometers as the shadow pursues its eastern track with a
ground velocity of 0.91 km/s.
One minute later (10:11 UT), the umbra arrives along the shores of the
Cornwall Peninsula. In the following four minutes, the shadow skirts
the
southern coast giving eager observers a brief taste of totality.
Plymouth,
the largest English city in the path, is north of center line and
witnesses a total phase lasting 1 minute 39 seconds. London misses
the total phase but experiences partiality with a maximum magnitude
of 0.968. By 10:16 UT, the umbra leaves England as it quickly
traverses the English Channel. The Channel Islands of Guernsey and
Jersey lie just south of the path and witness a partial eclipse of
magnitude >0.995. To the north, Alderney is deep in the path and
enjoys over one and a half minutes of totality.
Not since 1961 has the Moon cast its dark shadow upon central Europe.
The
southern edge of the umbra first reaches the Normandy coast just as
the
northern edge leaves England (10:16 UT). But another four minutes
elapse
before the center line makes landfall in northern France. As the
shadow
sweeps through the French countryside, its southern edge passes 30
kilometers north of Paris. The City of Lights will bear witness to
a partial event of magnitude 0.992 at 10:23 UT. Continuing on its
eastward
track, the path's northern limit crosses into southern Belgium,
Luxembourg
and Germany. Meanwhile, the center line cuts through Champagne where
the
citizens of Metz witness a total eclipse lasting 2 minutes 13 seconds
(10:29 UT). Four minutes later, the entire umbra crosses into
southern Germany and the picturesque Rhine Valley. North of the path,
Frankfurt witnesses a 0.979 magnitude partial eclipse, while
Stuttgart lies near path center for 2 minutes 17 seconds of totality.
At 10:35 UT, the Sun's altitude stands at 55º, the path width is 109
kilometers and the ground velocity is 0.74 km/s. Although München
(Munich) lies 20 kilometers south of the center line, the city's two
million citizens will still witness more than two minutes of
totality, provided the winds of good fortune bring clear skies on
eclipse day.
At 10:41 UT, the umbra leaves Germany and crosses into Austria where
it
encounters the Eastern Alps. Wien (Vienna) is almost 40 kilometers
north of the path and experiences a 0.990 magnitude partial eclipse.
The southern edge of the path grazes northeastern Slovenia as the
shadow enters Hungary at 10:47 UT. Lake Balaton lies wholly within
the path where the central duration lasts 2 minutes 22 seconds (10:50
UT). Like Wein, Budapest is also located about 40 kilometers north of
the path where a 0.991 magnitude partial eclipse will occur. As the
shadow leaves Hungary, the southern third briefly sweeps through
northern Yugoslavia before continuing on into Romania.
The instant of greatest eclipse1 occurs at 11:03:04 UT when the axis
of the Moon's shadow passes closest to the center of Earth (gamma2
=0.506). At that moment, the shadow's epicenter is located among the
rolling hills of south-central Romania very near Rîmnicu-Vîlcea. The
length of totality reaches its maximum duration of 2 minutes 23
seconds, the Sun's altitude is 59º, the path width is 112 kilometers
and the umbra's velocity is 0.680 km/s. Four minutes later (11:07
UT), Romania's capital city Bucuresti (Bucharest) is engulfed by the
shadow. Since Bucharest lies on the center line near the instant of
greatest eclipse, it enjoys a duration nearly as long at 2 minutes 22
seconds. Traveling south-southeast, the path encompasses the
Romania-Bulgaria border before leaving land and heading out across
the Black Sea.
The next landfall occurs along the Black Sea coast of northern Turkey
at
11:21 UT. Ankara lies 150 kilometers south of the path and witnesses
a 0.969 magnitude partial eclipse. The track diagonally bisects
Turkey as it moves inland while the center line duration begins a
gradual but steady decrease. At 11:29 UT, Turhal falls deep within
the shadow for 2 minutes 15 seconds. The umbra reaches Turkey's
southeastern border at 11:45 UT and briefly enters northwestern Syria
as it crosses into Iraq. The center line duration is now 2 minutes 5
seconds with the Sun's altitude at 50º. Baghdad lies 220 kilometers
south of the path and experiences a 0.940 magnitude partial eclipse.
Arriving at Iran's western boundary at 11:52 UT, the shadow spends
the next half hour crossing sparsely populated mountain ranges and
deserts. Tehran lies north of the path where its eight million
inhabitants witness a 0.943 magnitude partial eclipse. At 12:22 UT,
the shadow enters Pakistan and skirts the shores of the Arabian Sea.
Karachi is near the center line and experiences 1 minute 13 seconds
of total eclipse with the Sun 22º above the western horizon. The path
width has shrunk to 85 kilometers while the shadow's speed has
increased to 2 km/s.
The umbra arrives in India, the last nation in its path, at 12:28 UT.
As the shadow sweeps across the sub-continent, its velocity rapidly
increases while the center line duration drops below one minute and
the Sun's altitude decreases to 7º. The eleven million inhabitants of
Calcutta will witness a 0.879 magnitude partial eclipse with the Sun
a scant 2º above the western horizon. Leaving India just north of
Vishakhapatnam at 12:36 UT, the shadow sweeps into the Bay of Bengal
where it departs Earth and races back into space (12:36:23 UT), not
to return until the next millennium. Over the course of 3 hours and 7
minutes, the Moon's umbra travels along a path approximately 14000
kilometers long and covering 0.2% of Earth's surface area.

White dwarf star could be a real gem

LONDON (AP) -- Scientists believe they have found a star that
could be a solid diamond, The Sunday Times newspaper reported.
The star in the constellation Centaurus, named BPM37093, is a
white dwarf, the newspaper said, describing this phenomenon as a
star whose "nuclear fuel has run out and its redundant ash of
carbon and oxygen continue to smolder."
"We think BPM37093 is primarily made of carbon and oxygen in
a crystallized state. That would make it a diamond with a
blue-green tint," the newspaper quoted Scientist Steve Kawalar as
saying.
Kawalar, of Iowa State University in the United States, said the
intense gravity of a white dwarf creates the enormous pressures at
high temperatures to enable carbon to exist as a crystal, according
to the newspaper.
"A white dwarf is a very, very dense star. One teaspoon of matter
from these stars weighs a ton," Kawalar is quoted as saying.

determine what you could access and what you couldn't access. I can
envision the ruling body taking the stand, "no mark no food."

on Monday that Israel is not the colony of the U.S. rather that's U.S which
is the colony of Israel because many key posts in the U.S. are held by

Garaudy, who made the remark here at a oneday seminar to review the
trend of Palestine's occupation' at the Imam Khomeyni International
University on Monday, said the U.S. secretaries of state, defence and labor
as well as several senior CIA officials are all Zionists and it is Israel
that controls U.S. policies.
He said that boycotting U.S. made goods by Muslim countries would push
that country towards banktrupcy.
Contrary to (American President Bill) Clinton's claims, the U.S.

The Supreme Islamic Council and Islamic and nationalist figures held
the occupation authorities responsible for burning Bab al-Ghawanimah,
one of the gates of al-Aqsa Mosque.
In a statement issued today, the council denounced the intention by
some Israeli sides to present a draft law on the Wailing Wall to the
Israeli Knesset. They stressed that this holy wall constitutes the
western part of al-Aqsa, and is an Islamic endowment in accordance
with the Islamic law and as international committees and forums have
stressed. The council urged the Arab and Islamic nation and the
international community to shoulder their responsibility in defending
al-Aqsa Mosque and holy Jerusalem and pressuring the Israeli
Government into abiding by the laws that protect citizens under
occupation.
Concluding the statement, the council called on the sons of
Palestine to maintain a presence at al-Aqsa Mosque, build Jerusalem,
and operate its real estate in defense of the Arabism and Islam of
Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa.

China, Biological Effects of Gene Weapons Reviewed

Recently, experts of the U.K. Medical Society issued a warning that
gene herapy may possibly be turned into gene weapons for genocide. Dr.
Wayne Nathanson, chief of the Science and Ethics Department of the
U.K. Medical Society, spoke at the annual meeting of the Society that
weapons like these may target certain gene groups possessed by certain
groups of people, a twist away from "magic bullets" therapy with very
horrible consequences. These weapons can be delivered into human
bodies in the form of gas or aerosol, and can also be placed into
water supply. They can cause death, sterility or deformed births
leading to genocide.
What are gene weapons? We have to start from gene and gene
engineering. Gene is a technical term in the study of heredity, and is
a basic substance for hereditary functions. All characteristics of
living things are controlled by genes, and are passed from one
generation to the next through genes. Gene engineering uses design
methods similar to those of engineering, artificially uses one type of
gene to replace another, realizes gene transfer or recombination, thus
changing characteristics of living things and directing towards
developing new and better species.
Applying gene engineering techniques to medicine is to eliminate
genes causing diseases in human body, insert good genes and treat
certain diseases. These are called gene therapy.
Gene weapons utilize engineering methods and transplant disease-
causing genes into non-disease causing microorganisms via gene
transfer or recombination; or inject genes from vaccines or drugs into
disease-causing germs and viruses to cultivate various disease-causing
microorganisms and highly drug resistant, disease causing germs; all
to cause disease to people of certain races or people of certain
groups. For example, a certain former Soviet Union military research
unit transplanted genes of germs from a so-called Liegu Fever into
germs of ordinary wine yeast, and let germs of sweet wine yeast to
spread "genocidal" plague of Liegu Fever. The former Soviet Union also
attempted to combine genes of cobra venom with genes of influenza
virus to cultivate a new influenza virus containing cobra venom, which
causes people who catch influenza to also be poisoned, leading to
collapse and death.
Gene weapons are one type of biological weapons, and are new weapons
with stronger capability to inflict casualty which is developed on a
fundamental basis. They can not only serve as strategic weapons
attacking targets behind enemy lines and important strategic places,
but also can be used as tactical weapons in battlefields to attack and
inflict casualty on enemy targets.
Compared to conventional weapons, nuclear weapons and other high-
tech weapons, gene weapons have following special features or
advantages(1) low cost, high power of inflicting casualty. Comparative
research shows that it takes only fifty million U.S. dollars to build
a gene weapon arsenal, which has more power than a nuclear weapon
arsenal that costs 5000 million U.S. dollars to build. If a gene
weapon with super-bleeding fever germs is injected into enemy water
source and then goes downstream with water, it is capable of disabling
residents and troops in the entire area.
This kind of power to inflict casualty is much greater than that of
a nuclear bomb. Only twenty grams of "fever virus" as a gene weapon
developed by the former Soviet Union are enough to cause death of more
than 5000 million people in the world. (2) Methods to use gene weapons
are simple, varied and hard to defend against. Various gene weapons
with germs, microorganisms, and disease viruses, can be brought to
designated target areas manually, or by guns, balloons, ships,
airships, airplanes, or even rockets. Also due to the small size of
gene weapons which are launched surreptitiously, they are hard to
guard against. (3) Hard to treat. After gene weapons attack, diseases
start rapidly. Moreover, gene-altered germs, viruses and micro-
organisms contain multiple toxicities and exhibit complicated
symptoms. Unless one participated in the development and production of
the gene weapons, it is very hard to diagnose and treat accordingly.
Therefore, the function to inflict casualty is almost impossible to be
controlled. (4) Gene weapons target human beings. They do not function
to damage non-living things like weapons and equipment, buildings,
materials and wealth.
Scientists think that at the current technical level, it is very
easy to produce gene weapons. Therefore, they appeal to the
international community to establish a definitely enforceable order to

There is a custom of placing tree branches and boughs about the 'bimah'
(Synagogue pulpit) in the Synagogue, to recall that Shavuot is the time of
judgment for the fruit of the trees, so that prayers might be uttered in
their behalf. The Gaon of Vilna however, suspended this custom in many
communities since it had become an established practice in gentile
religious festival usage.

"Shavuot is an extension of Pesach and its conclusion. Just as we eat two
cooked dishes on Pesach in memory of the Paschal-Lamb and the Chaggigah
offering of Pesach, we likewise eat two cooked foods on Shavuot; one a milk
dish, and the other a meat dish. Since one may not eat from the same loaf of
bread with both meat and milk dishes, this custom is a memorial of the two

SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Three papers comment on the status of the peace process and the
European Union boycott of produce from the territories
Ma'ariv notes that it is the Israeli left who initiated the call
for a boycott of produce from settlements and that rather than hurting
the settlers, such a boycott will harm first and foremost the
Palestinians. The editors conclude by noting that while the Europeans
contribution to the peace process is not small, "If they try to increase
their influence by imposing sanctions against Israel, they will achieve
the opposite result. Prime Minister Netanyahu enjoys widespread public
support when he claims 'European Union policy is not smart, and the
Union must take care not to impose ultimatums and dictates to Israel."
Hatzofeh criticizes the European Union for their "one- sided"
intervention in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The call to cancel
import duty preferences for goods produced in Judea, Samaria, the Gaza
Strip and the Golan "fully brings home the negative nature of European
intervention". The editors continue"It therefore follows that Europe
fills the role of inciter rather than that of calmer and pacifier." They
conclude" The European Union cannot expect Israel to accept this one-
sided attitude".
Ha'aretz refers to what it calls the "price of the deadlock",
specifically the confrontation between Prime Minister Netanyahu's and
the European Union following the latter's call for sanctions against
produce from the settlements in the territories, by removing them from
existing customs agreements. The editors continue that it is no
coincidence that the European action, while merely legal-economic on the
surface, follows statements by France that "It is impossible to hold a
peace summit with Netanyahu" and European calls in the G-8 summit blame
Israel solely for the failure in the peace process. Only the
intervention of President Clinton prevented this. "But Netanyahu should
not be surprised by the economic sanctions Europe wants to impose on
Israel. The initiatives and criticisms express the European Union's
frustration at being pushed to the sidelines on the peace process by
Israel and the US, even as these countries contribute more money to the
Palestinian Authority than any other international body." The editors
conclude "The discordant sounds from Europe should sound a warning of
the international response to the official American announcement on the
failure of its mediation initiative." European pressure should not make
Israel give up vital interests, but the government should take their
impact on bilateral relations with the United States and with the rest
of the world into account.
Ma'ariv, in its second editorial, comments on the new Freedom of
Information legislation, essentially a copy of an American law. While
the editors generally support the "liberal-democratic advantages" of the
law, they warn against unnecessary paperwork and costs being created
caused by public caprice and forced curiosity by various "nudniks" who
have no interest in the issues at stake.
Hatzofeh, in its second editorial, supports Prime Minister
Netanyahu's request for one billion dollars in special aid to implement
the second redeployment to pay for the building of bypass roads to
settlements and other security measures, and states that such aid should
be a grant and not a loan. The editors claim that the request is
justified since these expenses are not investment for economic growth
and since Israel has no alternative sources. The United States has
already provided such aid in the past, as after the Camp David
Agreement. However, the editors conclude, "It would be a mistake to
consider the aid as an alternative to a true settlement with the
Palestinian Authority. Israel cannot be more generous by giving up
territory of the land of Israel, water sources or security needs merely
because it obtains American aid. These are two separate issues with any
connection between them."
Ma'ariv, in its third editorial, comments on the the case now
before the Supreme Court of a conflict of interests between private
business and public service by the Mayor of Netanya. The editors note
that while the court will decide if there is such a conflict legally,
morally there can be no doubt, since the mayor receives full pay from
the Interior Ministry for part-time work.
Yediot Ahronot has no editorial today.
Arafat Again Calls Oslo Accords A Temporary Truce

Palestinian Council Brands Israel 'Racist Zionist Colonialist'

The OBLIGATION
Under the terms of the Oslo Accords, the Palestinian Authority (PA)
is obligated to refrain from incitement against Israel.
In his exchange of letters with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on
September 9, 1993, Chairman Yasser Arafat wrote, "the PLO renounces the
use of terrorism and other acts of violence and will assume
responsibility over all PLO elements and personnel in order to assure
their compliance, prevent violations and discipline violators."
The Interim Agreement (Oslo 2) of September 28, 1995 (Article XXII)
states that Israel and the PA "shall seek to foster mutual understanding
and tolerance and shall accordingly abstain from incitement, including
hostile propaganda, against each other and, without derogating from the
principle of freedom of expression, shall take legal measures to prevent
such incitement by any organizations, groups or individuals within their
jurisdiction."
In the Note for the Record which accompanied the Hebron Protocol of
January 15, 1997, the Palestinians reaffirmed their commitment
regarding, "Preventing incitement and hostile propaganda, as specified
in Article XXII of the Interim Agreement."
The Violations
Following are statements of incitement and threats of violence made
by senior Palestinian officials in the past week, in violation of the
Oslo accords and the Hebron Protocol.
"Question: Do you feel sometimes that you made a mistake in
agreeing to Oslo? Arafat: No... no. Allah's messenger Mohammad accepted
the al-Khudaibiya peace treaty and Salah a-Din accepted the peace
agreement with Richard the Lion-Hearted."
[Note: Arafat is referring to the Khudaibiya agreement made by
Muhammad with the Arabian tribe of Koreish. The pact, slated to last for
ten years, was broken within two years, when the Islamic forces - having
used the peace pact to become stronger - conquered the Koreish tribe.
His reference to Salah a-Din is to the Muslim leader who, after a
cease-fire, declared a jihad against the Crusaders and captured
Jerusalem. This marks the second time in a month that Arafat has
compared the Oslo Accords with the temporary truces signed by Muhammad
and Salah a-Din. Previously, he made the comparison in an interview with
Egyptian Orbit TV on April 18, 1998.]

A promising new hit Song was recorded and released at Jerusalem's
Knesset Studio yesterday. Actually, the melody is the same, just the
words have been changed. It is sung to the tune of "Folsom Prison
Blues."
Popular as the song is projected to be, the world over, the Messianic
Community in Israel, has already rejected it, and has refused to sing
along. Nevertheless, caught up in their romantisism towards the Jewish
nation, and for the most part, blind to the plight of the Messianic
Believers who live in the Land, much of the Christian world has
applauded the new song, and is encouraging as many as possible to jump
on the "We Love Israel" band-wagon and join the song-fest.
The newly released tune is predicted to make the "top-10 hit list"
within weeks, and it is believed that that it will add a crown to the
vast Ecumenical collection which the Christian world has been investing
in lately, in their search for unity and world peace.
Citing that this is the best and most direct way to express their love
for Israel, after centuries of antisemitism, some Christian leaders
have already fully endorsed the lyrics of the new song, which call for
a cesation of sharing the Gospel with the Jewish people, and a
committment to stop calling them to repentance. Press statements like
the following, have already been released:

"We rejoice in the presence of the Jewish people in the country of
their ancestors and agree to avoid activities which have as their
intention to alienate them from their tradition and community."

Apparently, the lyrics are catching on quicker than imagined, to the
dismay of many Messianic Believers here.
In response, others Christians, in the midst of planning pompous
celebrations in honor of Israel's 50th Birthday have recently said,

"Rightfully, we think Messiancs should play a role, but they have
to abide by certain guidelines, including a ban on proselytising
their own people."

Lyricists of the new song have reportedly claimed that given world wide
support, their release is destined to remain at the top of the charts
for an extended period and actually become the Law of the Land, if the
Knesset Studio Committee will vote it through three more readings.
Meanwhile, Messianic groups who actively oppose this development are
feeling abandoned and are being frowned upon for not heeding the
warnings of jail and fines if they fail to learn the new song.
Reportedly, their own brothers in the faith feel that the song is much
easier to learn and market, much more popular, and certainly more
lucrative than the golden-oldies that Yeshua released some 2000 years
ago.

starts and ends its fiscal year sometime in the summer?]
GPS To Be Impacted By Calendar "Bug"

May 18 -- In a glitch somewhat like the so-called "millennium bug," the
internal calendar in a U.S. satellite navigational system that guides
everything from recreational boats to nuclear missiles is going to reset
itself to zero. When that happens in August, 1999, some older devices
using the Global Positioning System may think it's 1980 and malfunction.
The Coast Guard, Air Force and Navy are all checking their receivers to make
sure everything will work next year, and are also calling on civilians to
contact the manufacturers of their equipment, especially older models, to
make sure they will work properly. Receivers made after 1996 should be fine, but
older models need checking.
Like the Internet, GPS started as a military project for targeting weapons,
then spread to consumers. The system uses 28 satellites that orbit the Earth
and send navigational signals. Receivers in cars, on ships or in hikers'
backpacks pick up the signals and use simple triangulation to fix their
location.
The Clock Strikes Zero
The system works by measuring how long it takes a radio signal to get from
the satellites to Earth. A GPS receiver compares the satellite time signals to a
similar clock in the receiver itself. The satellite clocks measure time by
seconds within weeks from 0 to 1023. The clocks started Jan. 5, 1980 and
will reset to zero Aug. 21, 1999.
When that happens, some systems could lose track of time. That means that
they will mistakenly think the satellite is billions of miles away instead of
12,000 miles away. According to the receiver's calendar, the signals would
have left space 19 years ago.
Nothing goes wrong with the satellites. The problem is with receivers back
on Earth getting confused because of the wrong date. "It's like turning a radio
on and getting no sound," notes GPS consultant Len Jacobson. "You bang it a
few times and it doesn't play."
"The potential exists because there are so many receivers," says Air Force
spokesman Aaron Renenger. "Hikers or weekend yachters should check with
their manufacturers." Renenger says every GPS system that was ordered
through Air
Force channels has been fixed.

The Omer
An Offering
According to the Bible (Leviticus 23:11), an offering, consisting of an omer
(a specific measure) of barley, was brought to the Temple on the second day
of Pesach. The omer was, in fact, a measurement of barley. Until that
offering was made, the Bible records, "You shall eat no bread or parched
grain or fresh ears."
Counting
From that day onwards, it was necessary to count forty nine days until
Shavuot - Hag Hakatzir - the Festival of the [Wheat] Harvest. After the
destruction of the Temple, the practice of bringing barley was discontinued,
but Jews continued to "count the omer period," a custom which has continued
throughout the ages.
Weathering it
The Omer period has several interesting angles: In the agricultural world,
it represented a period of tremendous tension for the Judean farmer who was
exposed to sudden changes of weather that were typical for the season
between the two Jewish
holidays of Pesach and Shavuot. Indeed, the Hebrew word for a hot dry wind,
chamsin, derives its source from the Arabic word for fifty, since this
bothersome weather occurred so frequently during this period. The hot dry
wind could burn the
stalks of the ripening wheat, thus spoiling the produce and threatening the
farmer's sustenance.
Reminder of the Source
In Jewish thought and tradition, the optimal proportions of rains (and wind
and sun) were to be a reward for keeping God's commandments. So, the
counting of the days of the Omer reminded the farmer of the source of his
success in producing grain and olives and grapes - the three staple crops
recorded in the Bible. The daily omer count consequently offered an
emotional and practical spur to the landowner to be more faithful to the
ongoing demands of his spiritual duties. This spiritual aliyah -- ascent --
paralleled the process that the Israelites experienced in the 49 days that
passed between when they left Egypt to the time they received the Torah at
Mount Sinai.
Anticipation
The tension increased as the days passed, but so did the anticipation of
going up to the Temple on the upcoming festival of Shavuot. Shavuot was the
religious climax of the counting period. Since Shavuot also commemorated the
Giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai, observance of the holiday continued even
in the post-Temple period when the offerings were discontinued. The period
of the Omer thus became the natural bridge between Pesach and Shavuot. For
what reason did the Children of Israel leave Egypt if not to receive the
Torah? Thus the Jew counted the Omer as a bride and groom would count the
days to their marriage: as each day passes, the anticipation grows.
A Mourning Period
Through the years, the Omer period has become identified with sad memories
for Jewry. Massacres occurred during the period of the Romans and later
still during the Crusades. In the days of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, the
Jews - led by Bar Kokhba - attemped to drive out the foreign oppressors from
Judea. The revolt was unsuccessful and during the fighting thousands of Jews
lost their lives.
According to tradition, numerous students of Rabbi Akiva died as a result of
a plague that raged during the days of the Omer counting. For that reason,
it is customary to observe a a period of semi-mourning during this period,
most prominently during the whole Hebrew month of Iyar, when weddings are
not held, hair is not cut, and music is not heard. On one day only, the 18th
Iyar and the thirty-third day of the Omer - in Hebrew: Lag B'Omer, after the
acronym for the number 33 - this ban is lifted, since the plague is said to
have ceased on that day.

"PALESTINIAN 50" CATHEDRAL SERVICE IN BRITAIN
British-based Palestinians are marked "50 years of the Palestinian
tragedy" with an inter-faith remembrance service at Westminster Cathedral
this month.
It was organized by a coalition of groups, including the
Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, the Council for the Advancement of
Arab-British Understanding (CAABU) and the London Friends of Palestine.
The main speaker will be Canon Naim Ateek - pastor of the Anglican
St. George's Cathedral, in Jerusalem - a long-standing campaigner for a
Palestinian state alongside Israel.
Invitations to the event feature a map of Palestine, including all
of Israel, overprinted with the words: "Palestinian 50 - time for
justice."
The invitation also refers to the Palestinians having suffered
"great loss of life and property, dispossession, expulsion and the denial
of their homeland."
A CAABU spokesman said that securing the cathedral had been
"something of a coup."
However, the director of the Council of Christians and Jews, Paul
Mendel, said that he regretted the cathedral's use for a "one-sided"
service. "It does not reflect the pain on both sides of the conflict," he

ATTEMPT TO SMUGGLE ARTIFACT THWARTED
The Israel Antiquities Authority successfully foiled an attempt to
smuggle a Byzantine doorframe from Israel to France. Acting on
intelligence
information, the authority sent its antiquities robbery prevention unit to
the Ashdod port.
There, aboard an Israeli ship bound for France with a cargo of
cows and vegetables, the officials found an ancient architectural artifact - a
decorated Byzantine doorframe from 5th century CE packed in a wooden
crate.
The artifact was removed from the ship with the help of a crane
and has been transferred to the authority's offices. Ashdod police have opened
an investigation.
According to the authority, the main suspect in the case is a
resident of Bethlehem who owns a marble factory. (HaAretz 5/17)

*** Gingrich cancels trip to U.S. Embassy in Israel
(AP) - At the request of the White House, House Speaker Newt Gingrich
is canceling plans to visit the proposed site of the new U.S. Embassy
in Jerusalem, officials said Friday. Gingrich's spokeswoman,
Christina Martin, did not say why the request was made. But the
planned visit had angered the Palestinians, who warned Gingrich that
he could trigger bloodshed by meddling in the dispute over Jerusalem.
Gingrich begins a four-day visit to Israel on Saturday. In the most
controversial part of the trip, Gingrich and House Minority Leader
Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., had planned to visit the proposed site of the
new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. The United States and most other
countries plan to keep their embassies in Tel Aviv until a final
settlement is reached on the status of Jerusalem, which both Israel
and the Palestinians claim as their capital.

invaded Israel. Three Arab armies - those of Egypt, Iraq and the Arab Legion
- the army of Transjordan - together with Syrian troops, surrounded Jerusalem,
bombarded the City, and sought to capture it.
The Arab Legion entered the Old City and captured the eastern part of the
city. The Jewish inhabitants of the Old City were taken prisoner and much of
the Jewish Quarter was destroyed. Israel now only retained the Mt. Scopus
enclave - incorporating the Hebrew University and Hadassah Hospital - that
was totally cut off from the rest of Israel. This state of affairs was to
continue until 1967.

the Israel Broadcasting Services announced, "At this moment we are going through the
Lion's Gate in a jeep with the Deputy Chief-of-Staff and the commander of
the Central Command. I am now in the shadows cast by the gate. Now we are in
the sun again, in the street. We are inside the Old City. The soldiers are
up against the walls." In the background could be heard noises of shooting
and soldiers shouting, "To the Wall! To the Wall!"

The battles in East Jerusalem continued for one night and a day. On
Wednesday morning, June 7th, the paratroopers stormed into the Old
City by way of the Lions' Gate and immediately advanced to the Temple
Mount. Over his communications system, Motta Gur made the historic
announcement, "The Temple Mount is in our hands." The paratroopers
gathered on the plateau of the Temple Mount, and then began to rush
towards the Western Wall.
Above the sounds of a shofar, and soldiers singing "Yerushalayim Shel
Zahav," Motta Gur described the scene to radio listeners all over the
country, "It's hard to express what we're feeling in words. We saw the
Old City to our right when we were on the crest of Augusta Victoria. We
enjoyed the view and now we are hoarse from so much shouting and the excitement
of coming in at the head of this convoy. Our half-track broke open the gate and
went over a motorbike. It went through the Jordanian camp and we were the first
to get up to the Temple Mount, in great excitement. Moishele, who's been my
deputy for many years, took some men and ran to raise the flag above the Western
Wall. Now the whole Old City is in our hands and we are very happy."

JERUSALEM -- UNITED FOR 31 YEARS! On 28 Iyar 5727 (June 7, 1967) Israel
recaptured east Jerusalem from Jordanian control in the Six-Day War. This
Sunday (05-24-98) marks the thirty-first anniversary of that event.
Festivities will include rallies, concerts and a parade by
thirteen-thousand Israeli soldiers. It will be the first time the military
hold a large parade in the city in 25 years. A memorial service will also
be held for the fallen soldiers of that war. The parade has been condemned
by Palestinian leaders, who want east Jerusalem to be the capital of any
future Palestinian state. The head of Jordan's Royal Commission on
Jerusalem Abdallah Kanaan said Israeli efforts to stress the city's
Jewishness were leading the region
to the edge of an explosion.
Other events include a march by the Temple Mount and Land of Israel Faithful
Movement. The Faithful Movement will march from Ammunition Hill along the
route of the battle to the Old City, up to the Temple Mount and then to the
City of David. Yerushalim Shelanu (Our Jerusalem) will be holding a
demonstration outside of Orient House (Palestinian Authority [PA/PLO]
Jerusalem headquarters) in eastern Jerusalem. The protest will culminate
with a march through eastern Jerusalem, proceeding to Shar Shechem, and
conclude at The Western Wall. The Islamic Waqf called on Palestinians to
come to the Old City, particularly to al-Aqsa Mosque, Sunday "to prevent
attempts by settlers to break into the holy place". The statement also
called for Christian church bells to peal and for imams to call out from the
mosques at 1:30 pm when they expect the march to approach the area of the
Temple Mount. The statement, calling for incitement against the Jewish
celebrations, was signed by a group that includes Yassir Arafat's Fatah

PA/PLO ILLEGALLY BUILDING MOSQUE ON TEMPLE MOUNT: The PA/PLO Waqf, which
has religious authority over the al-Aqsa mosque on Jerusalem's Temple
Mount, is constructing an additional mosque on the site, MA'ARIV reported.
Security officials said that the Palestinian construction is illegal and
violates the status quo on the Temple Mount. Israel's police minister on
Wednesday ordered renovations of a vault underneath Al Aqsa Mosque to be
stopped. Muslim officials complied temporarily, but said they would resume
work soon and that Israel had no right to intervene. Engineer 'Adnan
al-Husayni, director of the Waqf Jerusalem, declared that "the battle over
al-Aqsa has begun --- a battle that must see all of us move internationally
and across the Muslim world to tackle that nation [Israel]".
In another story, Sheik Tzabri, the PA/PLO Mufti of Jerusalem, declared,
"There will never be peace without east Jerusalem ... Israelis must forget
about Temple Mount". The statement appeared in an interview to the Hebrew
weekly newspaper MAKOR RISHON.
On Friday an Israeli car was fired upon near Jerusalem's Har Homa. The
driver reported the incident to the soldiers at a military checkpoint. A
search of the area revealed bullet shells and footprints leading to towards

In its weekly session in Jerusalem today, the prime minister
briefed the cabinet on his Washington talks. Netanyahu warned the
Palestinians not to take unilateral steps, such as declaring the
establishment of a Palestinian state. Our political correspondent Aviv
Bushinsky reports
[Bushinsky] The prime minister's threats against the Palestinian
Authority [PA] -- if the latter declares the establishment of a
Palestinian state -- are becoming increasingly caustic. If at one time
Netanyahu said that the Israeli reaction to the establishment of a
Palestinian state would be the annexation of this or that area, now he
is categorically asserting that in the wake of such a unilateral
Palestinian step, we would see ourselves free of all our commitments.

Singapore Refusal To Host Netanyahu Seen 'Unprecedented'

The Government of Singapore has refused to receive Prime Minister
Netanyahu on an official visit, citing the stalemate in the peace
process as the reason. A few days ago, Singapore, which has normal
diplomatic relations with Israel, turned down an Israeli request to
accept the prime minister on an official visit in August.
Jerusalem political elements said the step was unprecedented.
"Israel has an ambassador in Singapore, and there are proper relations
between the states," the sources said. "The refusal to receive
Netanyahu was an insult.
