Small tidal waves hit Japan after quake
TOKYO (Reuters) - A massive under-the-sea earthquake off Japan's
southernmost Okinawa islands on Monday set off a tidal wave scare that
briefly disrupted the summer vacations of thousands of tourists enjoying
"Golden Week."
The 7.7 Richter scale quake, 20 kilometers below the sea, struck Japan's
most popular scuba diving region, an area rich in rare coral and sea
life, which at this time of the year is packed with tourists.
A Japan Meteorological Agency spokesman said there were no casualties or
damage from the quake which jolted the area at 8:30 a.m. (2330 GMT).
"We are taking the precaution of asking people in coastal areas to
exercise caution," Yoshiharu Sawada, head of the earthquake and tsunami
bureau, said at a news conference.
The epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, 160 miles south-east of
Ishigakijima, one of the southernmost islands making up the Okinawa
group.
Its effects were also felt hundreds of kilometers away in east Taiwan
where buildings shook, but again there were no damage or casualties
reported.
"I was eating breakfast with our tour group when the quake occurred. I
think the quake lasted for about one or two minutes," a man on a scuba
diving tour told TV Asahi.
The agency issued warnings for tidal waves of up to two meters high but
the sea surges that followed did not go over 10 centimeters, the agency
spokesman said.
The warnings extended north to two of Japan's four main islands --
Kyushu and Shikoku. The warnings were all lifted three hours after the
earthquake.
Authorities had ordered brief precautionary evacuation of coastal areas
in the Okinawa chain, including the capital of Naha.
Japan's coast guard and local police were mobilized to warn vessels in
the affected areas and broadcast tsunami warnings along the coastline to
fishermen and swimmers.
However within two hours residents were allowed to return to their homes
and tourists to beaches and most activities returned to normal.
"Golden Week" is one of Japan's most popular holiday periods, falling at
the start of summer when there are three consecutive public holiday
dates.
Tourists in the Izu Peninsula about 68 miles south-west of Tokyo also
had their Golden Week holidays spoiled by a series of quakes that have
shaken the hot spring resorts area for the past two weeks.

Major earthquake hits islands near Okinawa in southwestern Japan
TOKYO (AP) - An major earthquake rocked Okinawa and several smaller
islands in southwestern Japan on Monday morning. There were no immediate
reports of casualties or damage.
The Central Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning, instructing
residents of the islands to move to higher ground.
The agency said the tsunami, a large wave generated by undersea
earthquakes, could reach a height of seven feet.
The agency said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.7 and
was centered at a depth of 12 miles under the seabed, 160 miles south of
Ishigaki Island.
Ishigaki is one of the islands in Japan's southernmost prefecture of
Okinawa, about 1,000 miles southwest of Tokyo.

The magnetic storming already in progress became even more intense
overnight, with planetary magnetism (PK) readings reaching "9" from
0300-0600 UTC and "8" from 0600-0900 UTC... These represent severe
levels of magnetic storming.
The SEC had been predicting a "lull" in between the magnetic storm of
the last 48-60 hours and the new and stronger one expected on the 5th,
however this break is now appearing less likely. Whether this additional
increase in the PK levels represents an early arrival of the second CME
event is unclear at this time.
With severe magnetic storming we can expect the possibility of
electrical anomalies and malfunctions, communications disruptions, power
grid disruptions, and IMO an enhanced chance for strong seismic and
volcanic activity [such as the 7+ quake in the west Pacific.]

Yogic flyers could keep euro stable, party says
PARIS, May 4 (Reuters) - The Natural Law Party offered its
own solution on Monday to tension within the EU that led to the
messy weekend deal on a European Central Bank -- simply get
7,000 Yogic Flyers to meditate in Brussels.
In a statement, the French branch of the party, which argues
its meditating practices can further world harmony, proposed ``a
coherence group of 7,000 people practising Yogic Flying to give
the euro the necessary stability.''
``To introduce the euro without first ensuring the stability
of the collective conscience is to put the cart before the
horse,'' the statement said.
But it added it did not have the money to pay for its
scheme.

{A} DID BIBLICAL GIANTS BUILD THE CIRCLE OF THE REFAIM?

One of the last great barely known wonders of the ancient world
is a Stonehenge-like monument sitting atop Israel's Golan
Heights. Called Gilgal Refaim (The Circle Of The Refaim)in
Hebrew, the monument consists of five concentric stone rings
whose diameter is 155 meters.
The best preserved of the rings is the outermost, whose height
reaches 2 meters and thickness 3.3 meters. Some of the stones
used to create the ring weigh twenty tons. The total weight of
the stones is 37,000 tons.
In the middle of the rings is a cairn {1}, topped by a tumulus
{2}, measuring twenty meters across.
{1} cairn - a heap of stones set up as a landmark,
monument, tombstone, etc. {2} tumulus - a domelike
swelling or mound formed in congealed lava. (Webster's
Dictionary)
Despite the obvious attraction to archaeologists, the rings
remained hidden while the suspicious Syrian regimes held the
Golan Heights and were only opened to inspection after Israel won
the area in the Six Day War of 1967.
One feature of the rings has particularly fascinated the few
people who have studied them. It is the meaning of two large
openings, somewhat like doorways, one facing northeast, the other
southeast.
In 1968 Professor Yonathan Mizrahi of the Department of
Anthropology at Harvard University and Prof. Anthony Aveni of
Colgate University discovered that in 3000 BCE, the first rays of
the summer solstice would have appeared directly through the
northeast opening as seen from the central tumulus. At the same
time, the southeast opening provided a direct view of Sirius.
One function of the circles then, was an astronomical observatory
and stellar calendar. Or was it?
Prof. Mizrahi is doubtful. "Why would they have undertaken such a
massive building project, collecting 37,000 tons of stone and
painstakingly laying them down to last forever, when the same
task could have been completed using one rock and a stick?"
In fact, no one knows why the site was built -- thus speculation
is rife. Micah Ankouri, for instance, writing in Teva Ve'aretz
(Land and Nature) spends five pages trying to provide a
connection between the circles and Far Eastern mandalas. He
concludes that Gilgal Refaim was an "astronomical observatory
providing social harmony through its communal construction and
proof of the perfection of the universe."
The astronomical dating confirms lichenometric tests and carbon
dating of potsherds found on the site. In fact, the professors
erred on the side of conservatism. The sherds dated to the Early
Bronze Age, 3rd millenium BCE, 5000 years ago. A three layered
burial monument was added to the central cairn a thousand years
later. Thus, the circles pre-date the pyramids and Babylonian
temples, making them the oldest astronomical complex in the
Middle East.
The mysteries continue. Gilgal Refaim is the only megalithic
astronomical complex on earth built of loose stones. It resembles
more ruins found on Malta and in Zimbabwe than European sites
built at the same time and possibly for the same purpose.
But despite the similarity of purpose, supposedly the simple
nomads of the region had no contact with Europe. Nor were the
shepherd tribes prone to massive building projects. Gilgal Refaim
was the only such undertaking in the Middle East at the time.
There was no apparent cultural reason for this unique engineering
project.
For those seeking a possible UFO connection: the circles were
built on a flat plateau. No one could have seen the shape of the
monument from ground level and there were no hills nearby to gaze
upon it. Yet the monument could only have been appreciated from
above. It was as likely a message to the stars as a stellar
observatory.
In the general region of the rings are hundreds of dolmens {3},
similar in appearance to those found in northern Britain and
France. Moshe Hartal, Chief Archaeologist of the Golan explains,
"We have identified 8,500 dolmens of twenty separate styles on
the Golan Heights. Each tribe had its own dolmen style. The
biggest dolmen stones weigh over 50 tons and are seven metres in
height. Graves are found within some domens but not all. Their
function was not purely funereal."
{3} dolmen - a structure usually regarded as a tomb,
consisting of two or more large, upright stones set with
a space between and capped by a horizontal stone.

The Palestinian dolmens "are usually very simple: one or
more horizontal blocks were laid over a few vertical
ones averaging a meter (39 in) or less in height, with a
low entrance on one side. These may have been monuments
to the dead, designed as imitations of everyday
dwellings...Originally, they were probably covered with
small stones and earth, which has been washed away.
Occasionally, one or two circles of small stones
surrounded them. Nearly always they are clustered in
'fields' or groups, mostly in northwestern Jordan on the
slopes above the east bank of the Jordan River, or in
upper Galilee..." (Nelson's Illustrated Encyclopedia of
Bible Facts; page 75).
If the dolmens surrounding Gilgal Refaim were an integral part of
the site, then it was an enormous project encompassing more area
than at the Giza pyramids. Hartel is reluctant to draw such a
conclusion, taking the more conservative view that the dolmens
were built over time around the attraction of the circles.
One fact stands out. The local nomadic tribes of the time did not
build any other remotely similar monument. Circle building was
not a fashion of the era among the herdsmen and that, combined
with their unsuitable, primitive technology, seems to rule out
their construction of the circles.
If the local inhabitants didn't build the rings, then who did?
Surpisingly, there is strong evidence that the biblical giants or
Refaim were the architects and engineers who constructed the
monument.
Consider the following biblical clues, written in modern
terminology (The Book, Tyndale House Publishers):
-- In Genesis 14:5, we are told the Refaim inhabit the place
called Ashtherot-Karnaim. Just ten miles from the rings is the
site of an ancient Canaanite city called Ashtherot. It is named
after the Canaanite goddess of war and, contradictorily, love.
Ashterot was the Canaanite name for Sirius, from which the Hebrew
name Esther was derived.
-- In Joshua 12:4, we learn that "King Og of Bashan, the last of
the Refaim, who lived at Ashtarot... ruled a territory stretching
From Mount Hermon in the north...
-- In 1 Chronicles 6:71, we are told that the half-tribe of
Manasseh later inhabited "Golan," in Bashan.
-- The most explicit description of the size of the people of
Bashan is found in Deuteronomy 3. King Og is attacked and
defeated. "King Og of Bashan was the last of the great Refaim.
His iron bedstead is kept at Rabbah... and measures thirteen and
a half feet long and six feet wide." In the same chapter we are
informed that "The Sidonians called Mount Hermon, 'Sirion.'"
-- In Deuteronomy, we are told that the Refaim "were a large and
powerful tribe, as tall as the Anakim (giants)."
-- In Chronicles 20, the last of the Anakim is killed. "A giant
with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, whose
father was also a giant,... was killed by David's nephew
Jonathan. These giants were descendants of the giants of Gath and
were killed by David and his soldiers."
The respected Jerusalem biblical author, Rabbi Yisrael Herczeg,
hardly an advocate of ancient alien theories, nonethless confirms
the possibility that giant heavenly beings or their descendants
could have constructed the circles.
"The Jewish oral tradition says Og, the King of Bashan, stowed
away on Noah's ark and was the only survivor of the flood outside
Noah's family. Og was descended from the Nefilim, deities who
fell from the heavens."
Aliens?
"No, more like fallen angels. Og had children with Noah's
daughters and they were hybrid giants called the Anakim or
Refaim. They existed in ancient times and the Bible records their
presence in the Golan Heights. They could have built Gilgal
Refaim."

Commentary to above verse from - The Bible Knowledge Commentary,
Old Testament:
"Joshua led the people to Gilgal, their first encampment in
Canaan, about two miles from Jericho. There the 12 stones...
taken out of the Jordan were set up, perhaps in a small
circle. The name Gilgal means "circle," and may have been
taken from an ancient circle of stones of pagan significance.
If so, the more recent circle commemorating Yahweh's great
work would serve to counteract the idolatrous association of
the site."

(Gen 6:4 KJV) "There were giants in the earth in those days; and
also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters
of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty
men which were of old, men of renown."
1. The word "giants" in this verse has been translated from
the Hebrew word 'nephiyl' or 'Nephilim' [Strong's 5303]. "It
means a bully, a tyrant, a giant. It appears three times in
the O.T. There was much controversy concerning these
individuals. Since the etymology is uncertain, there is much
speculation among reputable scholars. The translation
'giants' in the KJV came from the Septuagint and may be
misleading. Does Gen 6:4 refer to the fall of angels? Were
they apostates? It is possible that the word means 'heroes'
or 'fierce warriors.' Until more evidence becomes available,
perhaps it is wise to do as the RSV and NIV translations did,
to render it "Nephilim."

2. "The form of the Hebrew word [Nephilim] denotes a plural
verbal adjective or noun of passive signification, certainly
from 'napal', 'to fall,' so that the connotation is 'the
fallen ones,' clearly meaning the unnatural offspring that
were on the earth in the years before the Flood, 'and also
afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of
men, and they bore children to them' (Gen 6:4). The mention
of the great stature of the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, in
the evil report that the ten spies brought of the land of
Canaan (Num 13:33) together with the LXX rendering,
'gigantes,' suggested the translation 'giants.' They were
exceedingly wicked and violent so that 'every intent' of the
thought of men's hearts 'was only evil continually' (Gen 6:5).

3. "The Hebrew word for giants (nephilim) literally means
the fallen-down-ones because these tall celestial beings fell
from the sky. Their half-breed progeny and their descendants
are often mentioned in the early books of the Old Testament
until the last of them were finally killed off. They were
known as the Rephaim, Emim, Anakim, Horim, Avim, and
Zamzummim. Some scholars speculate that this tradition of
giants born from the union of gods and humans formed the
basis for the demigods of Greek mythology."

[Strong's 7497]. rapha', raw-faw'; or raphah,
raw-faw'; from H7495 in the sense of invigorating; a
giant:--giant, Rapha, Rephaim (-s). See also H1051.
"Rephaim ('shades, ghosts') - the aboriginal giants
who inhabited Canaan, Edom, Moab, and Ammon. (Unger,
"The New Unger's Bible Dictionary", page 471.)
In Canaanite/Ugaritic mythology, Rephaim or "shades" are deities
of the underworld. Compare this to:
(Psa 88:10) "Wilt thou show wonders to the dead? shall the
dead arise and praise thee? Selah ."
(Job 26:5) "Dead things are formed from under the waters, and
the inhabitants thereof."
The word "dead" in these verses is translated from "rapha"
[Strong's 7496] which "describes those flaccid, feeble,
weak persons who are living in Hades. They were languid,
devoid of blood and animal life, but not lacking the
powers of the mind, such as memory [ghosts, in other
words]. They were the dead inhabitants of the
netherworld, the ghosts of the dead, shades in Sheol."

while H7497 and H7496 are both "rapha", they are still
distinguishable, but nonetheless, related in the Hebrew.

Golden Week is a collection of several national holiday within seven
day. It is called Golden Week because with good place week ends it
becomes the longest holidays of the year.
It begins with April 29. This day is called Green Day (Midori no hi)
which celebrated the birthday of Emperor Showa who died in 1989. This
national holiday is directed towards environment and nature.
May 3 - Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi) This day remembers the most
important changes of the constitution such as prohibition of leading
war, human rights and the sovereignty of the people.

Songbirds in the East Are Dying

INLET, N.Y. (AP) -- Ida Winter has been feeding the birds for as long
as she can remember, and she can never remember anything like this.
Out of the blue, tiny redpolls began dying all around the dozen
birdfeeders Winter keeps in her backyard near this Adirondack Mountain
hamlet.
"I watched one day," she said. "They would get all fluffed-up like
they were cold, and they were very weak. They couldn't always get on
the feeders, so they'd just feed off the ground.
"All seemed like their necks were broken. They couldn't hold their
heads up. I was surprised," Winter said. "I have seen hawks take birds
in flight, but I had never seen any birds die from this source. I
thought it was something I did."
It wasn't.
A decade after a major outbreak of salmonellosis was reported in
songbirds in the Northeast, another wave has hit. It has affected
several species, including redpolls, pine siskins, red crossbills and
American goldfinches, according to Margaret Barker of Project Feeder
Watch at Cornell University's ornithology lab.
Although scientists say the outbreak appears to be on the wane, dead
songbirds have been confirmed in 11 states in the East and Midwest,
and birds from four other states are being examined, said Dr. Kim
Miller, a wildlife disease specialist at the National Wildlife Health
Center in Madison, Wis.
"Salmonellosis in itself is a very common finding in songbirds,"
Miller said. "It's a common cause of songbird mortality. The thing
that's a little bit different is having multiple states reporting
mortality all at about the same time. It's something we usually don't
see in the Eastern half of the country."
Miller said die-offs caused by salmonellosis are common in the West,
occurring every two or three years, but she said scientists really
don't know why. It's not known just how bad the outbreak in the East
has been, Miller said.
In New York, the disease has been killing songbirds across the state
since at least January, according to pathologist Ward Stone of the New
York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
"It's certainly in the thousands in New York state alone," Stone said.
"We only see a small number. It started first in the pine siskins in
Ulster County, and that tells you something because that's at the
bottom of the state (in the Hudson River Valley). That means it was
going on in other places. We just didn't have any birds."
That was until bird lovers like Winter began sending carcasses to
Stone, who determined that salmonella was to blame.
Tests are under way at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National
Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa, to identify the
salmonella that's doing the damage.
There's a lot to sift through. There are more than 2,000 possible
strains of the disease, and birds frequently carry one or more forms
of it without getting sick, unless their immune systems are stressed
or a virulent strain comes along.
Many birds become sick only if under stress. One cause of stress could
be unaccustomed, long-distance flights to the United States by birds
that normally winter in Canada.
"Whenever the birds come down (from Canada) is when they have a
shortage of food," Stone said. "Something happens that they don't get
enough food, and they come south looking for more. They come down
periodically. It's always weather-related one way or another."
Like most bacteria, salmonella thrives in warm, wet conditions, and so
the unusually mild winter in the Northeast -- another El Nino effect?
-- has been raised as a possible cause.
"It's certainly correlated with it, but correlated isn't necessarily
causation," Stone said.
The disease is transmitted by infected fecal matter and probably
occurs when species gather in barnyards, woods or fields. Infected
birds can remain healthy even as they pass along the disease.
"We're starting to get information in about cats that are catching
sick birds, getting sick and then people handling either sick birds or
their sick cats getting infected," said Patrick McDonough, a
bacteriologist at the Cornell bird lab.
"This thing is going to spread out like a ripple effect. Whenever
there's a pandemic in a wildlife reservoir that's in contact with
either people or domestic animals, you always have that potential," he
said.
Winter certainly doesn't want to hear that, especially now that spring
is about to bloom in the mountains.
"I'm so worried about my chickadees 'cause they're my favorites," she
said. "They're such sweet little things, such gentlemen. They take one
seed at a time, where these other finches just sit and pick, pick,
pick."
Songbirds such as pine siskins, evening grosbeaks, American
goldfinches and common redpolls have been dying from a strain of
salmonella since at least January.
Dead songbirds have been found in 15 states, and salmonellosis is now
confirmed as the cause of sickness or death in songbirds in Arkansas,
Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York,
Pennsylvania, Vermont and Wisconsin, according to scientists in the
bird lab at Cornell University.
Diseased birds appear to be fat or puffed up with their feathers
ruffled. They typically perch in one place for a long time and don't
fly away when approached by humans or animals.
Until laboratory tests identify the source of the disease, scientists
say people who feed birds should take the following precautions:
-- Clean bird feeders with a 10 percent bleach solution, or stop
feeding altogether now that warm weather is here.
-- If still feeding, provide more than one bird feeder so that birds
are not competing for the same food.
-- Do not try to rehabilitate sick birds without legally required
permits from federal and state authorities.
-- When handling dead birds, remember that the bacterial disease may
turn out to be transmissible to humans. Wear rubber gloves to handle
dead or sick birds. Dead birds should be disposed of by wrapping
tightly and putting in outdoor garbage containers with tight lids.
Some state wildlife agencies might want dead birds to study. Call
those institutions for instructions on how to keep the birds.
-- What infected birds need most is water, which must be kept
extremely clean and fresh to stop the spread of the disease.
-- Do not use antibiotics in an effort to help an infected animal.
Only federally licensed rehabilitators or veterinarians can legally
administer antibiotics. It is feared that use of antibiotics on wild
birds will create a highly resistant strain of salmonella that could
impact poultry, pets and humans.

The unifying effect of such a pledge is easily appreciated. However,
the flip side of a strong sense of national (or religious)
cohesiveness is often the conviction that other peoples are less
important or worthy. To say nothing of other species.
A more inclusive sense of belonging needs to be fostered. By widening
the group to which we feel connected, we narrow the group we feel
justified in exploiting. Eventually the extent of the former
eliminates the latter.
In addition to patriotism, we can expand the loyalty we aspire to
instill. It is time to adopt a more visionary and all encompassing
"world pledge" as a New Millennium's Resolution:
A Recognition of Unity
"I recognize a vital unity linking me with all humanity and humanity
with all life, acknowledging that where none prevails over
another, each may prosper and all may continue."
Ideally, this resolution/pledge would be recited daily in schools
worldwide, as well as elsewhere. It is designed to be recited with a
cadence similar to that of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Killer bees found in Nevada=20

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The killer bees have made it to Nevada, and
El Nino may be to blame.
Africanized killer bees migrating northward from South America since
the 1950s have been found in Nevada, their farthest point northward.
Two swarms were discovered near Laughlin in the state's extreme
southern tip, state Agriculture Commission official Paul Iverson said
Tuesday.
The latest northward spotting may be a result of wetter, cooler
weather linked to El Nino, which has increased the growth of nectar-
and pollen-producing plants, Iverson said.
The bees, descendants of aggressive bees from Africa that escaped from
breeding experiments in Brazil in 1956, tend to attack in swarms.
Africanized bee swarms have been blamed for the deaths of more than
1,000 people since 1956. In this country, six people in Texas and
Arizona have died from mass attacks by as many as 300 bees.

GRAVATA, Brazil (AP) -- Desperate to find food after six months of
drought, a group of villagers and poor farmers broke into a
supermarket Tuesday in northeast Brazil and began shoving meat, corn
meal and rice into plastic bags.
Police armed with guns and clubs chased the half dozen looters out of
the store in the city of Gravata, 1,200 miles northeast of Rio de
Janeiro. Tugs-of-war began as police and employees tried to grab the
goods out of the looters' hands.
One farm leader was injured by a club blow to the head, and police
arrested three directors of the Landless Rural Workers Movement, which
organized the looting. The group promised more raids, which have
spread in drought-ridden northeast Brazil.
"We are going to make sure that no one starves to death because of the
drought," Jaime Amorin, a coordinator with the movement, said
recently.
The skirmish began when about 500 peasants marched through the streets
of Gravata and stopped in front of the Novo Dia supermarket.
As the crowd watched, half dozen men shouting "We're hungry," kicked
in the store's steel shutters and began taking the food.
The Catholic Church has backed the movement, saying looting to stave
off hunger is neither a crime nor a sin. Even Supreme Court Justice
Jose Paulo Sepulveda Pertence said looting in those circumstances was
justified.
But President Fernando Henrique Cardoso has lashed out at "inciters"
of looting. On a visit Monday to nearby Ceara state where looting
broke out in five cities Cardoso said Sepulveda Pertence didn't know
what he was talking about and should keep quiet.

Papal honor bestowed for first time on rabbi

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A rabbi who has worked for 30 years to promote
interfaith relations on Tuesday became the first member of the Jewish
clergy to receive a prestigious award from the Catholic Church.
Rabbi Mordecai Waxman was named Knight Commander of St. Gregory the
Great, a papal honor dating to 1831 and originally given to defenders
of the Papal States.
It is the first time Pope John Paul II, who has made improving
relations with Jews a cornerstone of his papacy, has bestowed the
hnor on a rabbi.
"The groundwork has been established (but) it most likely will take
three generations for the fruits of our efforts to be fully
realized," the 81-year-old Waxman said at a ceremony. "There's a
great need for education on both sides."
Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore, a friend and fellow promoter
of Catholic-Jewish relations, presented the award at St. Mary's
Seminary and University. Catholic bishops and Conservative and Reform
rabbis have been meeting at the school.
'A consistent peacemaker'
"Over the years, Rabbi Waxman has been a consistent peacemaker. He
has worked for reconciliation between the Jewish people and the
Catholic church," Keeler said. "At times (he) has spoken in a
critical role. ... In this sense he has been a firm but fair teacher
to all of us in the dialogue."
Waxman recently celebrated 50 years as the spiritual leader of Temple
Israel synagogue in Great Neck, New York. He called on Catholic and
Jewish leaders to push for greater discourse at the grass-roots
level, where mistrust and animosity still exists.
Some Jewish leaders say the Vatican didn't go far enough in its
long-awaited statement of remorse last month for the cowardice of
many Christians during World War II, when 6 million Jews were killed.
Many Jewish leaders also say the Vatican has not shed full light on
the role of the World War II pope, Pius XII, who they say could have
done more to save European Jews from the Nazis.
But Waxman believes the Vatican's statement is an important step in
"advancing the (Catholic-Jewish) dialogue, which today is open and
frank."

Last week I was watching an A&E presentation on who was a candidate for
the next pope. The following is a list that they gave (some of the spelling
is off because their names weren't put up on the screen)

The one that I found most interesting was the last one: Jean-Marie Lustiger.
The current pope really likes him and has "stacked the deck" of the conclave
that picks the next pope, so the scoop is that he is the most likely (with
Martini) to be chosen.
There are a few especially interesting things about Lustiger. For one, he's
of Jewish descent, and his name used to be Aaron.
"The Europeans have other papabili, among them Godfried Cardinal Danneels,
61, of Belgium. And then there is another prominent convert: Jean-Marie
Lustiger, 68, the Archbishop of Paris. Lustiger was born a Jew, the son of
Polish emigres to France (his mother would die in Auschwitz). Abandoning
his original name, Aaron, he adopted Catholicism as a teenager, a move that
hurt his parents terribly. Lustiger is a trusted confidant of John Paul's;
when he first visited the Pope, John Paul's secretary, Monsignor Stanislaw
Dziwisz, grabbed the Frenchman's arm and told him, "Remember, you are the
fruit of the prayers of the Pope. The Pope prayed long and hard over his
choice."
"Asked by TIME about his chances of succeeding John Paul, Lustiger replies,
"Me? Totally excluded. Out of the question." Lustiger fidgets silently with
his breviary in its brown leather case, then suddenly announces, "I had a
dream. I dreamed that the President of the United States was black, the
President of the ex-U.S.S.R. was a Muslim - and the Pope was Chinese. And
in my dream I asked God to let me die before that day would come. Because
if ever we had a Chinese Pope" - he clenches his fist and makes a
screw-turning gesture - "they know what administration is!"

"Now, let's look at the motto St.Malachy gave to the pope after Pope JPII.
It is "De Gloria Olivae" (the glory of the olive / olive tree). It is widely
interpreted to indicate that the next pope would be of Jewish origin since
olives / olive tree were a common Roman symbol for Jedea/Palestine.
Amazingly, one of the leading potential popes is a Jew. He is Cardinal
Lustiger, the very popular Archbishop of Paris. It seems likely that he'll
be the next pope and fulfill the prophecy of St.Malachy. But in April '96,
something happened which gave the motto, "De Gloria Olive", even more depth.
"In Italy, April 21 '96, just 2-3 days after the crucial window of April
18-19, for the first time in 50 years, Center-left government was elected
(voter turnout in the election was whopping 82.7%!). This was a MAJOR event
for Italy, because one of the reasons Italy has had 55 governments in the
last 50 years through all the political maneuvering by the Center-right was
to prevent this from happening. But what's really stunning here is that the
center-left coalition (which has the support of the former communists) that
won the general election is called... "Olive Tree"! Now we're beginning to
really see what the motto, "the glory of the olive tree", that St.Malachy
gave to the next pope refers to!"

A small country with the soul of a superpower

Israel is the only country on earth that has been involved in at least
one war for every decade of its existence. Israel is the only country on
earth that, 50 years after it was created, is still not truly
independent and does not have permanent borders.
Israel is the only country on earth that is in a state of war with 50
percent of its neighbors. Israel is the only country on earth whose male
citizens contribute a total of at least five years in active military
service, including reserve duty. Israel is the only country on earth
whose birth coincides with the renaissance of an ancient language and
whose children teach the mother tongue to their own mothers.
Israel is the only country on earth whose population increased by 500
percent through the mass immigration that poured through its gates when
it was established. Israel is the only country on earth two-thirds of
whose nation lives beyond its borders. Israel is the only country in the
Middle East that has not been tempted, even for a brief moment, to shift
from a democratic regime to a military junta, despite the centrality of
security issues in our daily lives.
Israel is a bona fide member of an exclusive club that includes the top
five armies in the world. Israel is a bona fide member of an exclusive
club that includes the seven nations in the world that possess nuclear
weapons. Israel is a bona fide member of an exclusive club that includes
the eight nations in the world that have a space satellite. Throughout
its existence, Israel has been one of the 10 countries in the 185-member
United Nations that head the list of international interest. As a state
that has had to fight for its physical survival nearly every day of its
life, Israel can pride itself on a number of impressive achievements,
the most prominent of which are, in my opinion, the following:
1. The "ingathering of the exiles" - Half of its cabinet ministers, a
third of the general staff, its defense minister and, perhaps, its next
chief of general staff are Sephardic Jews. Thus, Israel certainly can be
considered a true melting pot, although "ethnic discrimination" has
remained the mantra of the demagogues. Layer by layer - incorporating
Jews from Germany, Romania, Bulgaria, Poland, Ethiopia and the 1 million
immigrants from the former Soviet Union - the tall, erect, beautiful,
and ambitious new Israeli is gradually being formed.
2. The Jewish mind - When our first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion,
spoke of Israel as "a light unto the nations," he obviously was not
thinking that we would serve that function for profit-making purposes.
Our activities in the fields of research and development (R&D), military
technology, and aircraft and missile production were initiated to meet
our pressing military needs, yet they have also become a springboard for
technological achievements that are solid money makers.
With our Arrow anti-missile missile project, our missiles, our satellite
in the sky, and our investments in start-up companies, we are second
only to the United States in per capita technological investments.
Furthermore, our advanced agricultural equipment is in great demand all
over the world. Thus, according to The New York Times, Israel is nearing
the level of Western Europe in technological sophistication and wealth
per capita.
3. The American connection - Ever since Israel's creation in 1948,
America has courageously and consistently stood by our side and provided
us with its firm friendship and generous support. Our warm relationship
with the United States is one of our greatest assets. Whether America's
support is motivated by its own national security interests or by the
events of the Holocaust or by the powerful position of its Jewish
community, Israel enjoys the solid backing of the American public. Any
prime minister who dares to risk that asset cannot expect to remain in
office long.
4. The openness - In its half-century of existence, Israel has undergone
a dramatic metamorphosis: from a Bolshevist, patriarchal regime to an
open and true democracy. The founders of Israel thought they knew what
was good for us: whether or not we should take trips abroad, whether or
not we should watch television and what we should or should not know. We
have made the transition from socialism to a market economy. Israel has
been transformed from a country in which national security interests
strangled the right to know into a state that guarantees freedom of
expression, a right that has been buttressed through a series of rulings
by the Supreme Court.
Despite its great achievements, Israel is the only country on earth
whose mood is constantly changing. One hour we are in rock-bottom
pessimism, fed by innumerable Cassandras and doomsday prophets, the next
we are at the dizzying heights of euphoria, as if we ruled the world.
One hour we are the mighty Samson, the next we are a poor, forlorn

Night of the Military Hoax, the favoritism, the blacklisting of members
of both the right-wing Herut movement and the Israel Communist Party,
the "Who is a Zionist?" question, the "Who is a Jew?" question, the
scrounging and freeloading, governments that have made major blunders,
the austerity period of the '50s and its "seven olives equal one egg"
slogan, the jokes about Eshkol, the jokes about Toledano, the jokes
about Gesher leader and former foreign minister David Levy, Operation
Entebbe, the retaliatory raids against Arab terrorists, the War of
Attrition, the Yom Kippur War, the War in Lebanon.
Nonetheless, we are still here, a small, but devilishly clever nation. A
small country with the soul of a superpower.

Egyptian Newspaper Warns of New "Intifada"
On May 6, the editor in chief of the state-run Egyptian newspaper "Al-
Gomhouriya" and the English-language "Egyptian Gazette" blasted Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his failure to reach a breakthrough
during the London peace talks. The editorial warned that his actions could
lead to a new era of unprecedented violence in the region. "Al-Messa,"
another government newspaper, warned Netanyahu that his policy of giving
priority to security before peace "will prove wrong when the Intifada
[Palestinian uprising] starts again."
These editorials come in the wake of the recent failures of the Middle East
peace talks, which were supposed to help settle the issue of Israeli
security on the West Bank. U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright has
proposed bringing the two sides together next week in Washington. However,
Albright said that the invitation was based on the condition that Israel
accept the U.S. proposal to withdraw 13 percent of its forces from the West
Bank under the auspices of the land for peace program. While Palestinian
leader Yasser Arafat has accepted the proposal, Netanyahu rejected it,
citing the lack of security it would foster in the region.
The U.S. ultimatum compounds Netanyahu's problems. While the U.S. and
Europe want him at the bargaining table, there is growing sentiment from
his own right-wing supporters to abandon the peace process. Some right-
wingers have even threatened to scrap the Netanyahu government if he agrees
to the U.S. plan. It is rather strange that the United States put
Netanyahu and the future of the peace process at stake by making the
Washington talks conditional on an Israeli acceptance of the proposal. It
is unclear what the U.S. hopes to gain from this stance, since it plays
into Arab criticism of Israeli intransigence and does very little to help
Washington's remaining allies in the region.
What is clear is that the prospects for peace are evaporating. In fact,
the Egyptian newspaper editorials may foreshadow an even more dire
situation to come. Egyptian and Syrian foreign ministers plan to meet
with their Gulf Arab counterparts on May 20 to discuss the breakdown in the
peace process. The attendees are collectively known as the Damascus
Declaration Group, which was formed shortly after the 1991 Gulf War. In
addition to the focus on the Mid-East peace process, the group will discuss
prospects for a new Arab summit. Specifically, Sheik Zayid Bin Sultan Al
Nuhayyan, president of UAE, called for holding a full Arab summit following
a meeting with Hamas leader Sheik Ahmad Yasin, and he is expected to
reiterate this at the meeting of the Group.
Hamas has also begun to prepare itself for any upswing in violence. Hamas
leader Sheik Yasin recently returned from a six-day visit to Iran. Prior
to that, Yasin was in Syria for the Syrian-Iranian conference. During his
visit to Iran, Yasin secured the release of four Palestinian prisoners held
by Iran since the 1980 -1988 Iran-Iraq war as well as holding talks with
Iranian officials on the Palestinian situation. In a communique issued on
May 4, Hamas' Jordan-based Political Bureau stated that it is studying the
possibility of moving its political and media activities to Damascus.
Hamas' stated reason for the move was the avoidance of potential expulsion
from Jordan or political pressure to halt its political and media
activities. A move to Damascus would guarantee Hamas more freedom of action
in event of a resumption of the Intefada.
Finally, foreboding what would only be the most extreme Arab response to
the failed peace process, an Israeli intelligence report on April 23 warned
that recent Egyptian purchases of advanced Western weaponry had greatly
altered the balance of power in the Middle East by drastically reducing the
qualitative advantage enjoyed by Israeli forces. According the semi-annual
report, "recent arms acquisitions by Egypt have undermined Israel's
regional military superiority." Egypt is building up a force of advanced
warships armed with Harpoon missiles, manufacturing its own version of the
US-designed Abrams tank, and also equipping its fighter jets with US-made
AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, which even Israel has yet to acquire.
Disagreeing sharply with U.S. support of the Israeli position in the peace
talks, Egypt has taken a leading role in crafting an Arab response to the
talks' apparent collapse. What is disturbing is the pattern that is
shaping up around that leadership. At the same time Egypt is cooperating
with Syria on an Arab response and is warning of a resumed Intifada, Hamas
is coordinating with Iran and Syria in what appears to be preparations for
that Intifada. Perhaps Washington's decision to put Netanyahu on the spot
over withdrawal from the West Bank is aimed at pulling Cairo back in line
with a U.S. agenda. The question is, has Egypt already slid too far away?

Here is a little bit of information I fount on the Damascus Declaration
Group. The group includes 8 Arab nation: Qatar, Egypt, Syria, Saudia
Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and United Arab Emirates. They meet to
discuss economic, social and enviromental issues. Their commitment is to
the charter of the Arab league and Arab work in the service of common Arab
causes such as importance of implementing international legitimacy
resolution and the principle of trading land for peace. All I could find so
far. Hope it helps out a little.

I was wondering about Genesis 10/11. In the book 'In Search of the
Indo-Europeans', J.P. Mallory writes of the event horizon to the north
of the Black and Caspian Seas. The thought I had was that after the
Flood some of the populations dispersed up there. Most of the population
gathered at Babel. Now if population increase rates were greater at
Babel than they were in the hinter lands. And if this higher rate of
increase continued for a time. Then by the time that they were dispersed
they would have overwhelmed the rural communities. This could explain
his event horizon. But this would mean that two migrations occured. One
after the flood and one at Babel. Any replies to this idea.

By event horizon, I mean that the archaeological record is demonstrative
of a cultural point. A culture was noted for certain complexes and
industries then suddenly new one appear. This occurs because of the arrival
of a dominate culture or a war of conquest. Now if he is correct the
following cultures: Cris, Linear Ware, Bug-Dniester, Sursko-Dnieper, Sredny
Stog, Agidel, Samara, Khvalynsk - all show signs of event horizon(s). If a
cultural is using pottery with certain designs and patterns, weapons of a
certain style, burials in a certain fashion, farming in a certain method,
and all of a sudden change that illustrates a new culture taking over. The
Russians archeaologist have been working the sites for some time.
The book was published by Thames and Hudson. c1989.
He also points out that when tracing the history of language that places,
animals, things have a geographic determination. But numbers don't. In
certain regions you will find certain species, certain rivers, etc. But
numbers are not particular, 1 is 1 whether in Asia or Africa. This is the
best way to trace the developement and change of language, through numbers.
The way to chart to migration post Babel is to dig near rivers and lakes
and valleys to the north of Sumeria. Post flood vegetation would dictate
the route of migration. Hunter gatherers would find fishing most profitable.
While farming would also be near water and away from mountainous areas.

Bureau of Statistics. By the end of 1997, the GDP stood at $17,000, almost
five times more than that registered in 1950. The study was conducted
using "Purchasing Power Parity" analysis, which includes comparative prices
of local goods and services as well as international prices. From
1950-1997, Israel's GDP grew by an annual average of 7%. In 1997,
approximately 22% of all Israeli resources went towards export production,
whereas in 1950, this figure was 3%.

particular, GIVEN billions upon billions of dollars to Israel, their
production would not have grown at all. Current estimate are that the US
alone gives Israel the equivalent of $10,000 for every man woman and child
in the country each and every year. So having a GDP of $17,000 is NO great
accomplishment. Without our handouts, the country could not even survive
much less grow.

FEATURE-Scientists see sun, not people, behind global warming
By Neil Winton, Science and Technology Correspondent
LONDON (Reuters) - World governments are signing on to a
treaty that seeks to stop mankind from destroying the Earth's
climate, but some experts say the sun may be to blame and want
to test the theory.
The European Union signed the Kyoto treaty on climate change
in New York last Wednesday, bringing the total number of
signatories to 34. Last December, the world's industrial nations
agreed at a conference in Kyoto, Japan, to cut emissions of
carbon dioxide (CO2) and other gases by an average 5.2 percent
from 1990 levels between 2008 and 2012.
The accord followed a controversial report by the United
Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluding
that the burning of fossil fuels was behind an increase in
global temperature since the late 19th century.
But the evidence linking mankind with climate change has
always been contested. Even Ben Santer, atmospheric scientist at
the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and
lead writer of the IPCC report, pointed out that there was
evidence pointing either way, with significant uncertainties.
Despite the inconclusive science, many political leaders
have embraced the notion that human activity is causing global
warming and action is required to avert a climate catastrophe.
DANES SAY SUN POWERS CLIMATE CHANGE
Knud Lassen and Eigil Friis-Christensen, scientists at the
Danish Meteorological Institute, have published a theory
suggesting the rise in the Earth's temperature owes everything
to long-term changes in the sun's output and nothing to
greenhouse gases released by burning fossil fuels.
Their studies showed that climate is influenced by cosmic
and solar rays impacting on the Earth's magnetic field. Cosmic
rays vary with the solar cycle and interact with the solar wind,
which has a direct impact on cloud floud cover will
have a direct influence on the amount of the sun's heat that is
absorbed or reflected back into space.
The solar theory explained why Greenland was warm enough to
attract Viking settlement more than 1,000 years ago and southern
England supported a red wine industry during Roman times. In
neither case was there a suspicion of human influence on
climate.
Jasper Kirkby and Frank Close of the European particle-physics
center CERN in Geneva have been impressed by the solar theory
and want to set up an experiment to test it.
``The more I read about this theory the more convinced I am
that they (the Danes) are on to something very important,''
Kirkby told Reuters.
``A striking correlation has been observed between global
cloud cover and the incident of cosmic rays ... causing
estimated changes in global temperatures that are comparable to
all the warming attributed to greenhouse gases from the burning
of fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution,'' he said.
CERN PHYSICISTS SEEK TO VERIFY SOLAR CLAIM
``However, a direct link between cosmic rays and cloud formation
has not yet been unambiguously established. We therefore propose
to experimentally measure cloud formation under controlled
conditions at CERN.''
Kirkby says there is a major flaw in the argument that
warming is directly linked to rising CO2 emissions -- between
1945 and 1970 world temperatures dipped while CO2 emissions rose
steadily. ``This dip seems well matched to a decrease in the
sun's activity,'' he said.
But many other scientists have little time for these
arguments, which they say only serve to slow down urgently
required action. ``We have enough evidence for governments to
act,'' said Sir John Houghton, recently retired chairman of
Britain's Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution.
``The greenhouse effect is real and more of the world will
warm up. The potential for rainfall, sea level increases, floods
and droughts are serious. If we carry on burning fossil fuels
without curbs, temperatures will change faster over the next
century than they have over the last 10,000 years,'' said
Houghton, still co-chairman of the IPCC's scientific assessment
working group.
Darren Goetze of the Union of Concerned Scientists in
Cambridge, Massachusetts, agreed that solar activity played a
role in the past but says now it is human activity that is
calling the shots. ``In the 20th century it is quite clear that
solar activity is not dominant. Warming is quite clearly
ascribed to rising greenhouse gases,'' he said.
``The rise since 1970 (after the unexplained dip) is even
steeper than 1900 to 1945. And the 15 warmest years on record
have all been since 1980. For 10,000 years we have seen rather
extraordinary stability. Now we are starting to see
extraordinary variability,'' Goetze said.
CERN TEST RESULTS POSSIBLE IN TWO YEARS
But the debate goes on. Henrik Svensmark, another scientist
from the Danish Meteorological Institute, said current warming
was explained by solar activity currently being the highest in
the last 600 years, coupled with a low cosmic ray count in the
last eight years.
``There is no proof of manmade influence on the climate yet.
The CERN experiment would be very welcome to establish the solar
link,'' Svensmark said.
But Goetze called for clear policy steps now. ``We need to
tighten the commitments of industrialized countries to keep up
the process of decarbonizing economies. Then we need to engage
the developing economies to take the same kind of steps.''
The Kyoto agreement did not include developing countries.
CERN's Kirkby said his planned experiment could be set up
within one year, with results about one year later. It requires
support from some European institutes.
``The experiment could resolve one of the important unknown
effects that have so far prevented reliable calculations of
global warming from greenhouse gases, an issue of profound
economic and social importance to the world,'' he said.

Turner charity to announce funds for U.N. projects

GENEVA (Reuters) - The head of the United Nations
Foundation, a charity set up by Ted Turner, called Tuesday for
the White House and Congress to settle the abortion row holding
up payment of huge U.S. arrears to the world body.
Timothy Wirth, a former Colorado senator, also said Turner's
New-York based public charity would announce next week the first
projects it will back to the tune of $20 million.
Turner, founder of Cable News Network and a vice chairman of
Time Warner Inc, said last September he would donate $1 billion
to U.N. humanitarian agencies over the next 10 years.

Turner chairs the foundation's four-member board, which also
includes Wirth, former U.N. undersecretary Maurice Strong and
former Atlanta mayor Andy Young. Four new, non-American members
are to be announced next week, Wirth said.

"Making Sustainability Work"
Five years after the Rio Earth Summit, the increasing destruction of
our environmental life support systems (UNEP and World Watch reports),
continuing poverty of large number of people (UNDP report), their lack of
access to the justice and democratic processes required to empower them, and
the perception of growing health threats to human life (Environmental
Monitor report) put at risk the sustainability of life on Earth. The recent
Rio+5 civil society and UN's official Earth Summit reviews confirm that the
present situation, in spite of some promising examples, is more
unsustainable than it was five years ago. Agenda 21, as a guiding framework,
is even more relevant today while still far from realisation.
The change of course called for at Rio demands bold collaborative
action - on the scale of the Marshall Plan, but of a different structure.
This new action calls for the basic principles, processes and
infrastructures as well as the financial, social and intellectual capital,
and the synergies of governments, private enterprise and civil
society associations which are needed to make the necessary shift to a
sustainable mode of life.

state anthem because hope is the secret of its strength. Hope is what

SUMMARY OF EDITORIALS FROM THE HEBREW PRESS
Ma'ariv, in its second editorial, focuses on the collapse of the
water system yesterday in the Negev. The editors consider that the
collapse, which came about because of excessive consumption of water
resulting from the hot weather conditions, may be seen as a
foreshadowing of "serious shortages which are likely to affect the
entire country in the foreseeable future." They note that the increase
in population resulting from the large-scale immigration from the former
Soviet Union, and the agreement with Jordan by which Israel pledged to
supply water to the Hashemite kingdom, have both placed further strains
on Israeli water supplies. The editors recommend desalination as a
possible solution or, alternatively, the import of water from Turkey.
The paper concludes with the observation that a considerable number of
the sources of the coastal plain's water supply lie in the Palestinian
autonomous area, and stress that any arrangement reached must not harm
Israel's access to water.

A Spanish town councilor was killed Wednesday in an attack blamed on
the Basque guerrilla group ETA, and authorities said they had
uncovered a possible plot by the rebels to assassinate King Juan
Carlos. Tomas Caballero, 63, a member of the ruling Popular Party in
Pamplona, was shot twice in the head by a gunman as he left his house
Wednesday morning. Officials said the attack was clearly the work of
ETA, which has assassinated four other local politicians in the past
year. Minutes before the killing, Interior Minister Jaime Mayor-Oreja
said on TV that investigators had discovered ETA was considering an
assassination attempt against the king this summer.

Q Prime Minister Netanyahu says he'll reject the invitation
to the Washington talks on Monday if the U.S. tries to dictate the
scope of an Israeli troop withdrawal. Do you have any response to
that?
MR. FOLEY: Well, I think there is little or no danger of that
prospect, because I can certainly assure you today that the U.S. has
no intention of issuing any kind of dictats or ultimatums to a good
friend such as Israel. But I would like to emphasize the fact that we
see the invitation for a meeting on Monday at the White House as a
strategic opportunity to put the peace process, which is in the
interests of Israel, the Palestinians, the United States and all the
peoples of the Middle East, back on track. There is an enormous
amount at stake in this process. And we've seen a peace process that
has been imperiled over the last year to year and a half. And now we
have, really, a glimmer of hope that indeed we are close to the
possibility of restarting the peace process. And so we are urging all
the parties, really, to seize this unique opportunity.
Indeed, we are hopeful that the parties will be able to come to
agreement on the basis of the U.S. ideas, which would permit the
launching of permanent status negotiations. And, of course, this aim
-- to launch on an accelerated basis permanent status negotiations --
has always been Prime Minister Netanyahu's desire. But again, we're
not talking in any way about an ultimatum. It is, instead, an
opportunity that President Clinton and Secretary Albright see to come
to an agreement on some of the issues that we have been discussing
since last August. Again, the goal is to launch permanent status
negotiations, which is an objective we share with both of the parties.
But -- yes.

I would say additionally, as Secretary Albright indicated
yesterday, that those were largely positive meetings in London in
which Prime Minister Netanyahu indeed responded positively in some
areas, and he was very constructive and helpful throughout, and has
been fully engaged in what we believe is a creative process.
And I'd like to emphasize what I said at the outset, that we are
hopeful that it will be possible in the coming days to reach agreement
on the basis of the American ideas and to meet in Washington next week
to launch historic permanent status negotiations.

US official visits mainland to improve military ties

A senior American defence official is in Beijing to
discuss further improvements to military ties with
China.
In talks with military officers yesterday, Assistant
Secretary of Defence Franklin Kramer discussed
the forthcoming visit to Beijing by President Bill
Clinton.
There have been reports that Mr Clinton may agree
to lift the remaining Tiananmen-related sanctions on
the transfer of military technology to China.
While meeting Vice-Chairman of the Central
Military Commission General Zhang Wannian, Mr
Kramer said the US "recognises the important
common interests with China".
"The US hopes that relations between the two
armed forces can be improved in conjunction with
the growth of bilateral relations," Xinhua quoted Mr
Kramer as saying.
Expressing approval of joint efforts to develop a
"constructive and strategic partnership" between the
two countries, he added: "The US is anticipating a
successful visit by President Clinton to China."
General Zhang recalled that during a visit by
President Jiang Zemin to the United States in
October, the two presidents reached a "common
understanding on co-operation between the armed
forces of the two countries".
"China is ready to make concerted efforts with the
US in a bid to bring these understandings to
fruition," he said.
General Zhang said he would visit the US "within
the year".
Diplomatic sources said he postponed a trip which
had been planned for March or April because he
was recovering from cancer surgery.

In a meeting with American visitors over the weekend, Palestinian
Authority Chairman Yasir 'Arafat publicly accepted the notion of
establishing the capital of a future Palestinian state in Abu-Dis,
near Jerusalem. He also indicated that he viewed understandings in the
1996 Beilin-Abu-Mazin [Mahmud 'Abbas] and Beilin-Eytan agreements as
realistic foundations for a final settlement with Israel.
During a discussion in Ramallah on Saturday with the New York- based
Council of Foreign Relations, 'Arafat was asked how he viewed the
final settlement.
"There are many ideas, such as the Beilin-Abu-Mazin plan," he said.
'Arafat was later asked if an agreement could also be reached on the
question of Jerusalem. "Certainly," he responded. "The idea of Abu-
Dis, which belonged to al-Quds (Jerusalem) under Jordanian control, is
acceptable."
The surprised council members asked again if indeed the chairman of
the authority believed it would be possible to reach an agreement with
Israel based on the Abu-Dis idea. 'Arafat responded, "Yes, and there
is also the Beilin-Eytan plan."
Senior Palestinian officials were also surprised by the remarks.
They were especially excited by the Abu-Dis solution.
According to the plan formulated by Beilin and Abu-Mazin on the eve
of the last elections in 1996, most settlements under Israeli control
would remain, whereas settlers living in highly populated Palestinian
areas could live in the Palestinian state or move to Israeli
territory. The Jordan Valley would remain under Israeli control for
seven years from the signing of the agreement.

GENEVA (AP) - Going beyond U.S. policy, Hillary Rodham Clinton told a youth
conference on Mideast peace that she supports the eventual creation of an
independent Palestinian state.
``I think it will be in the long-term interests of the Middle East for
Palestine to be a state,'' Mrs. Clinton said in a satellite question-and-answer
session Wednesday from Washington, according to a report by State Department's
U.S. Information Service.
The first lady called that ``very important for the Palestinian people'' and
for the ``broader goal of peace in the Middle East.''
Her comments to the teen-agers went further than the U.S. policy of her
husband's administration, which is simply that statehood is a matter for Israel
and Palestinians to work out themselves.
Her spokeswoman, Marsha Berry, issued a statement saying Mrs. Clinton was
expressing her personal view and that U.S. policy is unchanged.
``These remarks are her own personal view,'' said Berry. ``The administration's
position on this matter has not changed. ''
White House press secetary Mike McCurry reiterated that.
``She was not reflecting any administration policy,'' he said. ``She was
responding to some very heartfelt concerns raised by the young people who were
on the program. She was reflecting a personal view.''
There was little immediate reaction in Israel to the first lady's comments.

The first lady's comments were made to a youth camp at the alpine resort of
Villars. The camp, organized by the Washington-based Seeds for Peace, brought
together roughly 75 U.S., Israeli, Palestinian and other Arab teen-agers to
discuss Middle East peace.
Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat's daughter, Dalal, was among those
attending
During the session, one young Palestinian asked Mrs. Clinton what could be done
about the ``generation of the intifada, those people who have spent their lives
out of school and throwing stones'' and now have no education.
Mrs. Clinton said the international community should make developing education
and training programs for young people in the streets ``the highest priority.''
Mrs. Clinton also urged the young people to exercise caution if they were ever
asked to take up arms, said Mark Hill, a spokesman for Novartis, the Swiss
pharmaceutical giant sponsoring the conference.

A thousand years before England's Stonehenge, cattle herders in Egypt built
a complex of stone slabs that researchers say may be the first monument
based on knowledge of astronomy. Known as Nabta, the site includes a stone
circle and five lines of standing and toppled megaliths. Satellite
surveys--reported last week in "Nature"--show that some of these stones are
aligned north-south, east-west, or pointing to the summer solstice sun as it
appeared 6,000 years ago. When climate change eventually forced Nabta's
builders to move on, they likely headed south, fueling the birth of an
advanced Egyptian society a few hundred years later.

A new kind of preacher

Liberia's seven-year civil war not only killed 200,000 people; it left
thousands of ex-combatants jobless. One local Pentecostal pastor, John Kon,
has now found some of them a new occupation: as preachers. About 50
fighters, including one who cut out the hearts of his victims, have joined
Kon's ministry on the outskirts of the battle-scarred capital of Monrovia.
One disciple is Joshua Milton Blahyi, better known as "Gen. Butt Naked." The
country's most notorious killer, Blahyi fought nude and killed some 1,000
people. When Kon first approached him, the warlord, high on drugs, killed
his own bodyguards for failing to protect him. Now "Butt Naked" is a
flamboyant street preacher, clothed and armed with a Bible.
Some Liberians applaud Kon's mission for converting criminals; others
maintain they should be brought to justice. The pastor believes the
ex-warriors do more good as missionaries. He hopes to use Blahyi to woo
other fighters to his cause; "Jesus took the most peculiar cases, those who
everybody else had given up on," says Kon.

Vatican denies murdered Swiss guard chief was spy

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican on Friday forcefully
denied that murdered papal Swiss Guard commandant Alois
Estermann had been a spy for East Germany's Stasi secret police.
``The hypothesis is not even being taken into
consideration,'' said Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls,
answering questions about a German newspaper report that has
added another twist to a mystery surrounding Estermann's death.
``It is not the first time that inconsistencies are written
about an honest man,'' Navarro-Valls said in a statement.
The German newspaper Berliner Kurier said Friday that
Estermann, who with his wife was shot dead by a disgruntled
junior guard Monday, first offered to join the Stasi while he
was still with the army in his native Switzerland.
He joined the Vatican Swiss Guard a year later.
Quoting an unnamed source in Berlin, it said Estermann on at
least seven occasions sent highly confidential Vatican material
on a night train from Rome to Innsbruck in Austria, where it was
collected by a Stasi employee.
The Vatican said earlier this week 23-year-old Swiss Guard
Vice Cpl. Cedric Tornay shot Estermann and his wife in a ``fit
of madness'' because he had been passed over for a military
decoration. Tornay then turned his gun on himself.
The triple killings were the worst violence in living memory
at the Vatican, which is trying to return to normal after two
funeral services.
The newspaper said Estermann had operated under the code
name Werder and was useful to the communist East German regime
because of his proximity to the Pope and because his Vatican
passport allowed him to travel easily across the world.
It said Estermann had turned to espionage to supplement the
meager salary offered by the Swiss Guard.
The Stasi officer who was in charge of running Estermann
lives in Berlin the newspaper said. The man denies any
connection with Estermann.
The paper also quoted a close associate of Markus Wolf, the
master spy who headed the Stasi's foreign intelligence
department, as saying: ``We were very proud that we had a very
good source sitting in the Vatican from 1980 onwards. We had our
foot in the door.''
The Vatican says it has told the media all it knows about
the killings, including gory details of autopsy reports.
A letter Tornay wrote to his relatives before the killings
seems to confirm the Vatican's explanation, according to the
Italian media, which published the short note Friday.
``They did not want to give me the medal. ... I have to
thwart further injustices. ... I am doing this for the corps.
... I have been forced to do this. ... I am sorry to leave you
alone,'' the media quoted it as saying.
Though Tornay's family members said he had been
``victimized'' by Estermann, the guardsman's sister Melinda was
quoted in press reports as saying, ``I think the Vatican will
not give us the full truth about my brother's death.''
``They say it was madness, but in my heart I say no, it
couldn't be that,'' she said.

Pakistan police disperse mourners of bishop

FAISALABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - Police fired tear gas and
bullets Friday to disperse angry crowds mourning a Roman
Catholic bishop who killed himself to protest against Pakistani
blasphemy laws.
Six people were injured, witnesses said, when security
forces tried to control a crowd of about 2,000 demonstrators
that accompanied the body of Bishop John Joseph from his native
village of Khush Pur to the cathedral at Faisalabad.
Joseph, Bishop of Faisalabad, shot himself in the head
Wednesday to protest against the blasphemy laws under which
Roman Catholic Ayub Masih was convicted in April and could still
be executed.
Masih was alleged to have defamed the Prophet Mohammed in an
argument with a neighbor. The trial was held in a jail after
police uncovered an apparent plot to kill him by Muslim
villagers, and details of his alleged offense were sketchy.
Christians form no more than 2 percent of Pakistan's
population of 135 million, which is overwhelmingly Muslim.
Thousands of mourners, some shouting anti-government
slogans, converged on Joseph's home church earlier to salute a
man whose human rights campaigning and development work endeared
him to the Pakistani Christian community.
Scuffles first broke out when some young mourners tried to
prevent the removal of the body to Faisalabad, witnesses said.
Large crowds accompanied the body on the 25-mile road to
Faisalabad, about 100 miles south of the capital, Islamabad, for
a formal burial Sunday that is expected to draw huge crowds.
Faisalabad police fired tear gas to disperse the youths and
then fired bullets, the witnesses said. The extent of their
injuries was not immediately known.
In Khush Pur, Father Yakoob, who was with Joseph before he
shot himself in front of the Sahiwal court that sentenced Masih
to death, told Reuters the bishop sacrificed himself to change
the law that outlaws blasphemy against the majority faith.
``Now, to remove this law from the country, we need to
sacrifice our lives. I will be the first,'' Yakoob quoted him as
saying in his final moments.
Inside and outside the Khush Pur church, angry Christians
shouted slogans denouncing the blasphemy law, passed under
military strongman Gen. Zia ul-Haq and still on the statute
books of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's government.
``Down with Zia, down with Sharif, scrap the law,'' they
chanted as the service took place in the rural church around
which about 4,000 mourners gathered.
The official APP news agency said the pope had sent a
message of condolence to the diocese.

Pope to visit Croatia and beatify WW2 cardinal
ZAGREB, May 8 (Reuters) - Pope John Paul II will visit
Croatia in October and beatify a World War Two Roman Catholic
cardinal who was imprisoned by Yugoslav communist authorities,
Croatian Archbishop Josip Bozanic said on Friday.
Addressing a congregation in Krasic, the birthplace of
Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, Bozanic said the Pope would visit
Croatia from October 2-4, the Hina state news agency reported.
The Pope is expected to beatify Stepinac in a religious
service at the site of a pilgrimage shrine in Marija Bistrica on
October 3, Hina said.
The 77-year-old pontiff paid his first visit to Croatia in
1994, three years after the country gained independence from
federal Yugoslavia.
Stepinac was arrested and tried by Yugoslav authorities for
allegedly supporting the Nazi-backed Ustasha fascists, who
killed thousands of Jews Serbs and Gypsies in Croatia. He died
under house arrest in 1960.
Members of Croatia's Jewish community said recently Stepinac
had done a lot to avert the persecution of Jews.

Archbishop Stepinac: "God, who directs the destiny of
nations and controls the hearts of Kings, has given us
Ante Pavelic [head of a Nazi puppet regime in Yugoslavia]
and moved the leader of a friendly and allied people,
Adolf Hitler, to use his victorious troops to disperse our
oppressors...Glory be to God, our gratitude to Adolf Hitler
and loyalty to our Poglavnik [fuhrer], Ante Pavelic."

At the end of WWI, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were declared
independent states. The Catholic Croats were now a minority in
Yugoslavia. The Vatican decided to change this and got themselves
involved with former Russians who had "fled the Boshevik takeover
and were determined to return to defeat 'the Reds.'" Ante Pavelic
was "among its most vicious and sadistic leaders" and was "destined
to be of great service both to Hitler and the Vatican as the head of
a Nazi puppet regime in Yugoslavia known as the Ustasha."
Even though the lawful leadership of Croatia at this time was Catholic,
even they were suspicious of the Vatican. The Vatican got around this
by promoting their man Ante Pavelic who formed "an illegal army
of pro-Vatican terrorists" in partnership with Croatian Archbishop
Stepinac. "These two arch-criminals were responsible for numerous
assassinations, including Yugoslavian King Alexander and French
Foreign Minister Barthou (1934), as well as Croat Peasant Party
leader Radich (128). (The latter had warned against and opposed the
machinations of the Vatican and thus had to be removed.)"
Because of these deaths, Pavelic is sentenced to death by both
France and Yugoslavia but Mussolini, "out of loyalty to the Vatican,"
gave Pavelic asylum in Italy and refused to extradict him.
The Ustashi's main goal is to form a Catholic Croatian state in
Yugoslavia and when Hitler moves in, Pavelic is tapped to head
the puppet regime there.
Pavelic's solution to the problem of non-Catholics was either
deportation or liquidation and the tactics he used even sickened
the Nazis. "Pavelic reprimanded Hitler for being too lenient in
his treatment of the Jews and boasted that in Croatia he had
completely solved the 'Jewish problem.'" Approximately 50,000
Jews were either liquidated or shipped to Nazi death camps.
"Most of Croatia's Catholic clergy were fanatically behind Pavelic
and his unbelievably evil regime. Medals were even given by Pavelic
to nuns and priests, thus betraying the fact that many of them
played active roles alongside the Ustashi military"
Two investigators writing on Pavelic's friendship with top clergy
write:
"When the Ustashi were ushered into Zagreb by the Germans,
Archbishop Stepinac of Croatia immediately offered his
congratulations to the poglavnik and held a banquet to
celebrate the founding of the new nation...[Stepinac]
arranged to have Pavelic received by Pope Pius XII [in
Rome]."
Former BBC commentator Avro Manhattan, an expert on Vatican
policies, has written: "...here the Catholic Church [erected]
a State in complete accord with all her tenets. The result was
a monster standing upon the armed might of twin totalitarianisms:
the totalitarianism of a ruthless Fascist State and the
totalitarianism of Catholicism...What gives to such a creature
of Vatican diplomacy its peculiar importance is that here we
have an example of the Catholic Church's implementing all her
principles unhampered by opposition, or by fear of world
opinion.
"The uniqueness of the Independent Catholic State of Croatia lies
precisely in this: that it provided a model, in miniature, of
what the Catholic Church, had she the power, would like to see
in the West and, indeed, everywhere. As such it should be
carefully scrutinized. For its significance...is of the greatest
import to all the freedom-loving peoples of the world."
Once Pavelic was in power, Archbishop Stepinac issued a Pastoral
Letter ordering the Croatian clergy to support the new Ustasha
State. "The involvement of Catholic clergy either in active
participation or in blessing the Ustashi-run holocaust is well-
documented...Archbishop Stepinac headed the committee which was
responsible for forcible 'conversions' to Roman Catholicism
under threat of death and was also the Supreme Military Apostolic
Vicar of the Ustashi Army, which effected the slaughter of those
who failed to convert. Stepinac was known as the 'Father Confessor'
to the Ustashi and continually bestowed the blessing of Holy
Mother Church upon its members and actions."
"After the opening of the Ustasha Parliament, Pavelic
attended the Zagreb cathedral, where Archbishop Stepinac
offered special prayers for his good friend and ordered a
solemn Te Deum to be sung in thanks to God for the establishment
of the new regime."
"Unlike the Germans, who were interested only in the quickest
and most efficient means of mass extermination, the
Catholic Ustashi, with priests and bishops participating and
giving their blessing, took great pleasure from 'torturing
before killing. Most of their victims were not shot but were
strangled, drowned, burned, or stabbed to death.'"
After the war Stepinac was arrested by the Yugoslav government
and sentenced to 17 years in prison for war crimes. He only
served a few years because of the Vatican's propaganda of the
"suffering martyr" and their organizing of "Cardinal
Stepinac Associations" which lobbied for his release. [Note--
for a job well done he was made a cardinal.]

"The Vatican's Holocaust" by Avro Manhattan
Introduction
Mr Manhattan is a world renowned authority on Roman Catholicism in
politics. A resident of London, during WWII he operated a radio station
called "Radio Freedom". He also wrote political commentaries for BBC.
Most of all this book is a well documented account of atrocities that
Croatian Ustashi government committed on Serbian people during WWII
- and all in name of (Catholic) Christianity.
It is realy hard to comprehend the level of Ustashi
barbarity. The truth about their bestiality really borders with
unbelievable... And the author insists that a reader should grasp at least
the comprehendable part of the Holocaust.
Though, again, most of the book is about Croatian Ustashi barbarity, as
most illustrative example of how far Catholic intolerance can get, it is
about Catholic political might, in general.

"...The revival of a policy of forcible conversion assumes an even
more portentous significance when one remembers that it occurred
with the tacit approval of the Vatican. Had the Vatican disapproved
not a single priest could have taken part in the massacres or
forcible conversions of Orthodox Serbs. A village priest can act
only with the approval of minor Hierarchs who themselves cannot
move without the permission of their Bishop, while the Bishop, in
his turn, must act according to the instructions of his Archbishop;
the Archbishop only on those of the Primate; the Primate on the
direct instructions of the Vatican. The Vatican is the personal
dominion of the Pope. The Pope being the central pivot of the vast
Hierarchical machinery, it follows that the ultimate responsibility
for all members of the clergy-or, to be more precise, for the
collective action of any given national Hierarchy - rests with him.
This cannot be otherwise. For policies of great import must be
submitted to him before their promotion by all Hierarchies the
world over, the Pope being their sole authority. If the responsibility
for the monstrous persecutions of Orthodox Serbs rests with the
head of the National Hierarchy-i.e. Stepinac-it has automatically to
rest also with the Head of the Universal Church, without whose
consent the Catholic Hierarchy would not have dared to act--i.e.
with Pius XII.
Pius Xll could not plead ignorance of what was going on in Croatia
by bringing forward the excuse of the obstacles of war.
Communication between Rome and Croatia was as easy and as free
in peace-time. From the very beginning of hostilities the Nazi
Ambassador at the Vatican was treated as of far greater
importance than all the Allied diplomats. In 1940 - 2 the Vatican
was on the most cordial terms with Hitler. Political and religious
Ustashi leaders came and went between Rome and Zagreb as freely
as did the Germans and Italians, the Ustashi State then being a
satellite of Nazi Germany, and hence a province of the Nazi
Empire. Moreover, the Pope knew what was happening in Croatia,
not only through the Hierarchical administrative machinery, which
kept him up to date on all Croatian events, but also through other
reliable sources. They were:
(a) The Papal Legate. Pius XII, it should never be forgotten,
had a personal representative in Croatia, whose task was to
implement Vatican policy and coordinate it with that of
Pavelic, as well as reporting on religious and political matters
to the Pope himself. The Papal Legate to Croatia was Mgr.
Marcone, who openly blessed the Ustashi publicly gave the
Fascist salute, and encouraged Catholics (e.g. when he went to
Mostar) to be "faithful to the Holy See, which had helped that
same people for centuries against Eastern barbarism"-that is
say, against the Orthodox Church and the Serbs. Thus, the
Pope's official representative openly instigated religious
persecution, as well as praying for victory "under the
leadership of the Head of the State Pavelic," against the
Yugoslav National Liberation Army in 1944 - 5.
(b) Cardinal Tiseran, head of the Holy Congregation of
Eastern Churches. This congregation's specific task was to deal
with Eastern Churches. Cardinal Tiseran received detailed
reports of every forcible conversion and massacre in Croatia.
Between April and June, 19 over 100,000 Orthodox Serbs were
massacred; yet Cardinal Tiseran on July 17, 1941, had the
audacity to declare that Archbishop Stepinac would now do a
great work for the development of Catholicism in "the
Independent State of Croatia...where there are such great
hopes for the conversion of those who are not of the true faith."
(c) Ante Pavelic, who, by his representative to the Vatican,
through whom Pius XII sent "special blessing to the Leader
(Pavelic)," forwarded regular reports, at times straight from
the Minister of Religions, about the "rapid" progress of the
Catholicization of the New Croatia.
(d) Last but not least, Archbishop Stepinac himself, who in
person visited Pius XII twice, and who supplied His Holiness
with figures of the forcible conversions. In an official
document, dated as late as May 8, 1944, His Eminence
Archbishop Stepinac, head of the Catholic Hierarchy, in fact,
informed the Holy Father that to date "244,000 Orthodox
Serbs" had been "converted to the Church of God."

Even in Zagreb, where His Grace Stepinac and the "visitor"
Marcone resided, the Serbian Orthodox Bishop Dositej, was beaten
and tortured to such an extent that he became insane.

Parallel to the onslaughts made against the Serbs, was the
extermination of the Jews, which continued with a vengeance, and
applauded by the Catholic Croatian press. Just as the terrorism had
nearly reached its climax, the "Katolicki Tjednik", the organ of
Catholic Action and specifically of Archbishop Saric of Sarajevo,
published an article signed by the priest Franjo Kralik, entitled:
"Why Are THE JEWS BEING PERSECUTED?" Among the items is
the following text:
"The descendants of those who hated Jesus, who condemned him to
death, who crucified him and immediately persecuted his
disciples, are guilty of greater excesses than those of their
forefathers. Greed is growing. The Jews who led Europe and the
entire world to disaster -morally, culturally and
economically-developed an appetite which nothing less than the
world as a whole could satisfy.... Satan helped them to invent
Socialism and Communism. Love has its limits. The movement for
freeing the world from Jews is a movement for the renascence of
human dignity. The all-wise and Almighty God is behind this
movement."
The "renaissance" of human dignity in Satellite Croatia reached its
peak with the deliberate mass slaughter of hundreds of thousands of
innocent people.
A little later the same paper gave further emphasis: "The greatest
enemies of the Croatian people are the Orthodox Serbs and, as in
all Europe, the Jews, and Communists." This was, at least, what
Roman clericalism had preached in all the countries of Europe,
even before it had fallen beneath the yoke of Hitler. The following
is an excerpt from the pastoral letter of the primate of Poland,
Cardinal Hlond: "It is an actual fact that the Jews fight against the
Catholic Church. They are free-thinkers, and constitute the
vanguard of atheism, bolshevism and revolution. The Jewish
influence on morals is fatal. It is also true that the Jews are
committing frauds, practicing usury and dealing in white slavery."
The Croatian Ustashi exterminated 80% of Yugoslav Jews. These
warm-hearted testimonials of approbation, cited by the
Catholic-Croatian authorities who had adopted the policy of racial
and religious purges practiced by the Ustashi, could be multiplied
without end.
Still again the following quotation: "Blessings upon the first
national Croatian banner in Bosnia took place in the convent of
Nazareth before the Sisters of Christ's precious Blood . . . near
Banja Luka. The standard-bearer was Fra.Viktor Gutic. It so
happened that Fra. Viktor Gutic was none other than the Ustashi
prefect who, a month before, had ordered the "liquidation" of
Serbian Orthodox Bishop Platon, of Banja Luka, with all the
refinements of cruelty which have, heretofore, been described.
Perhaps Christ's blood was cherished by the good sisters of
Nazareth but the blood of Christians, such as the Serbian Orthodox
was worth nothing to them.

An excerpt from the letter written by imminent Croatian politician.
Prvoslav Grizogono, which he addressed on February 8, 1942 to Archbishop
Dr. Alojzije Stepinac:

"I am writing to you as a man to a man, as a Christian to a
Christian. I have been meaning to do this for months hoping that
the dreadful news from Croatia would cease so that I could collect
my thoughts and write to you in peace.
For the last ten months Serbs have been killed and destroyed in
Croatia in the most ruthless manner and milliards of their property
is being destroyed. The blushes of shame and anger cover the faces
of every honest Croat.
The slaughter of Serbs began from the very first day of the
establishment of the Independent State of Croatia (Gospic, Gudovac,
Bosanska Krajina, etc.) and has continued relentlessly to this very
day. The horror is not only in the killing. The killing includes
everybody, old men, women and children. With accompanying barbarian
torture. These innocent Serbs have been impaled, fire has been lit
on their bare chests they have been roasted alive, burned in their
homes and churches while still living, covered with boiling water
and then their skin peeled of and salt poured into their wounds,
their eyes have been pulled out, their ears, noses and tongues cut
off, the priests have had their beards and mustaches raised together
with their sculls, their sex organs severed and put into their
mouth, they have been tied to trucks and then dragged along the
ground, nails have been pressed into their heads, their heads nailed
to the floor, they have been thrown alive into wells and abysses and
bombs thrown to the, iron nails have broken their heads, children
thrown into flames, into boiling water, into lime kilns, their legs
thorn from them, their heads smashed against wall, broken their
backs against rocks and tree stumps and many other horrible torture
was perpetrated, such as normal people can hardly imagine.
Their rivers Sava, Drava, the Danube and their tributaries have
carried thousands and thousands of their corpses. Dead bodies have
been found with the inscription: 'direction Belgrade-traveling to
King Peter'.
In a boat which was found on the Sava river there was a heap of
children's heads with the head of a woman (who could have been a head
of one of the mothers of the children) with the inscription: 'Meat
for the Jovanova Market in Belgrade.'
Horrifying is the case of Mileva Bozinic from Stanbandza whose child
was removed from her womb. There was also the case of the roasted
heads in Bosnia, the vessels full of Serbian blood, the cases of
Serbs being forced to drink the warm blood of their slaughter kin.
Countless women, girls and children, mothers in front of their
children and children in front of their mothers were raped or else
sent off to Ustashi camps to serve the Ustashi, rapes even took
place on the altars of Orthodox churches. In the Petrinje county a
son was forced to rape his own mother. The slaughter of the Serbs in
the Glina Orthodox church and the murder of Serbs on the altar of
the Kladusa church is without precedent in history. There are
detailed and original accounts of all these horrors. Even the
Germans and Italians were astounded by these crimes. They
photographed a huge number of cases of such slaughter. The Germans
are saying that the Croatians did this also during the 30-years War
and that is why there has been a saying in Germany since then:
God save us from the plague, hunger and the Croats.
The Srem Germans despise us because of this and behave in a more
humane fashion with the Serbs. The Italians photographed a vessel
with 3.5 kilograms of Serbian eyes as well as a Croat who wore a
necklace strung with Serbian eyes and another one who came to
Dubrovnik with a belt on which cut Serbian tongues were hanging!
The horrors of the camps in which the thousands of Serbs were
killed or were left to die from exposure, hunger and cold weather,
are too terrible to mention. The Germans have been talking about a
camp in Lika where there were thousands of Serbs but when the
Germans got there they found the camp empty dredged in blood and
bloody clothing. In that camp it has been said a Serbian bishop
also lost his life. Thousands upon thousands of Serbs in the camp
of Jasenovac are still being tortured as they are spending this
fierce winter in wooden Gypsy shacks with no straw or covering and
with a ration of two potatoes per day. In the history of Europe
there have been no similar cases. One would have to go to Asia at
the time of Tamerlan of Genghis-Khan or to Africa to the countries
of their bloodthirsty rulers to come upon similar situations.
These events have shamed the name of Croatia for centuries to come.
Nothing can absolve us fully from this ever again. We will not be
able to tell even the last wretched man in the Balkans about our
thousand year old Croatian culture, because even the Gypsies never
perpetrated such cruelties. Why am I writing this to you when you
are not a political personage and can not bear responsibility for
all this. Here is why: in all these unprecedented barbarian crimes
which are more than Godless, our Catholic church participated in
two ways. A large number of clergy, priests, friars and organized
Catholic youth took active part in all this. It also happened
that Catholic priests became camp guards and Ustashi accomplices
and so approved of the torture and slaughter of Christians. A
Catholic priest even personally slaughtered an Orthodox clergyman.
They could not have done all this without the permission of their
bishops and if they did, then they would have had to lose their
jobs and be taken to court. As this did not happen it means that
their bishops granted them permission.
Secondly, the Catholic church made use of all this to convert the
surviving Serbs. And while the soil was still steaming from the
innocent victims' blood, while groans shuttered the chests of the
surviving victims, the priests, friars, nuns carried in one hand
the Ustashi daggers and in the other their prayer books and
rosaries. The whole of Srem is inundated with the leaflets written
by bishop Aksamovic and printed in his printing shop in Djakovo,
calling upon the Serbs to save their lives and property by
converting to Catholicism. It was as if our church wanted to show
that it could destroy souls just as the Ustashi authorities
destroy bodies. It is an even greater blot on the Catholic church
as at the same time many Orthodox churches, all the Orthodox
monasteries have been confiscated, their property plundered as
well as many historical treasures. Even the Patriarchate church
in Sremski Karlovci has not been spared. All this violence against
conscience and the spirit has brought even greater disgrace to the
Croat nation and name.
